I just saw this and now there's nothing that can stop my brain from making a 4 hours length film about it. Please give more ideas or even head cannons I'm desperate 😩
Absolutely hilarious. A fantastic mystery solving Rom-com. Love Hugh Grant
Of course the killer is still there among them and it was a pretty horrible murder like the body was looking gross and blood everywhere a very intriguing case actually but Blanc is more terrified of what his husband would do to him if he finds out what he’s been doing on their anniversary vacation
I'm so excited for the new movie 🥰

benoit blanc/philip: homecoming
spoilers for The Glass Onion ahead!
--
“So,” says Philip.
“So,” says Benoit Blanc.
“You solved a murder on a billionaire’s private island, then encouraged your new friend to blow up virtually the entire island, causing the destruction of one of the greatest works of art in the history of humanity and the downfall of said billionaire’s massive tech company. Not to mention the billionaire himself.”
Blanc nods, looking around at the open living room-slash-kitchen area of his and Philip’s flat, suitcases at his feet and the stale smell of airplane still clinging to his clothes.
“And you,” he says, “made about fifty loaves of sourdough bread in my absence.”
“Fifty-six,” says Philip. “I ate some.”
Blanc nods slowly, looking at his husband. His husband looks back.
“My god, I love you,” Blanc says.
“I love you too. I wish I could have seen the explosion.”
“It was quite something.” Blanc steps closer and takes Philip’s face in his hands. He kisses him hard on the mouth. Philip gives a startled inhale and then kisses back, grasping at Blanc’s upper arms, pulling him in.
“There you are,” he gasps out, looking into Blanc’s eyes. “There you are.”
Blanc’s face falls a bit. “I do apologize for my…rather insufferable behavior these last few months. And for monopolizing our bathtub. I know I cannot have been much of a joy to cohabitate with.”
“Oh, Blanc,” says Philip, “mostly it was just hard to watch you suffer. I miss your…” He gestures at Blanc’s sparkling eyes, his upright posture, his bright face alive with intelligence. “This. You.”
Blanc smiles a little and kisses Philip, more softly this time. “Have you perfected the recipe yet?”
Philip beams. “Try for yourself.”
Blanc looks around at the dozens of loaves stacked on their cabinets, tables, counters, and even the occasional bookshelf. “I certainly shall,” he replies. “I certainly shall.”

I saw these posts on reddit about the queen and king of romcoms
https://reddit.com/r/popculturechat/s/7VGteGMaMI
https://reddit.com/r/popculturechat/s/8Xjg1m5yRX
I don’t know if you like this genre, but if you do who do you think they are?
This is difficult, if not impossible. Ultimately, it's a subjective game. I'll always pick those who acted in the rom-coms I like. It also depends on the decade in my view. Molly Ringwald in the 80s was the IT American girl, but I wouldn't necessarily think of her as a rom-com queen, but more like the quintessential image of a type of teenager/young adult at that time.
Maybe I'll go with Meg Ryan. I loved When Harry Met Sally and You've Got Mail is my favorite romantic comedy. Nothing beats that. Once Fall is here, I know it's the perfect film for a cozy weekend afternoon. I just love everything about it. Everything.
As to the the king of rom-coms, it has to be Hugh Grant. No one does it like him. It's that simple. I don't have to debate in my head 😀

@nuri148 thanks for the tag, linda 💕☺️
I'm not very good at sorting my preferences, so I don't think I can do a "top 10" thing either. Here goes:
10 films that I love (in no particular order!)
The One I Love (2014): a troubled couple rents a summer house as part of a couple's therapy experience. The name of the movie in Portuguese is very romcom-y, something like "Complications of Love" so when I saw it on TV I thought it was just a rom-com, and BOY WAS I WRONG! This one is definitely a wild ride and, to this day, I still don't know if I love it or am just really disturbed by it.
Arrival (2016): aliens arrive on earth and a linguist tries to learn how to communicate with them. This movie is very dear to my heart, not only for the overall quality and amazing turns but because it is a bit of a twist in science fiction. I'm so used to sci-fi movies revolving solely around STEM, it's refreshing to see one centered on human sciences.
Nope (2022): science fiction meets horror meets western. This movie is definitely unique and so well done, from the screenplay to the acting and the PHOTOGRAPHY, not to mention the symbolism. As Isabela Boscov said, Nope has as many layers as the viewer (no pun intended) wants to dig for. It's a gift that keeps on giving. I've seen it three times since its release, and I'm ready for a fourth.
Interstellar (2014): eye-opening, mind-blowing, heart-shattering. Time really is relative because these three hours feel like mere minutes!
Bridget Jones's Diary (2001): I'm a sucker for a good romantic comedy, and Bridget Jones's Diary has the best elements of the genre: a relatable protagonist? Check! Compelling plot (pride and prejudice retelling)? Check! Ridiculous moments? Check! The movie is FUN like few are.
Peter Pan (2003): this is a childhood favorite. I watched this version of Peter Pan every day for like a year when I was younger. I used to dream about leaving everything behind and going to Neverland, swimming in an ocean of stars (escapism much?)
The Pacifier (2005): Another childhood film! Vin Diesel, a US Navy Agent, is assigned to protect (read: babysit) the children of a government scientist. I don't have an explanation for this, except for IT'S FUN! I rented the DVD at least 20 times!
Music and Lyrics (2007): have I mentioned I'm a sucker for romantic comedies? This one has an unusual setting and pairs two actors I really like, Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore, but the best part is the music! I love this soundtrack, especially "PoP! Goes my heart" and "Way Back into Love".
Twilight (2008): I was twelve when I first read the book and watched the movie, and it was my first contact with fandom, so this already makes Twilight very dear to me. But this movie also has such vibes! Whenever it's rainy, I find myself craving that atmosphere, missing the soundtrack and that weird blue filter. Idk, it just takes me back to simpler times.
Pride & Prejudice (2005): such a lovely adaptation! There's something so charming about this movie that makes me want to watch it again whenever I see a gifset on Tumblr (which is pretty often lol).
Some of these are childhood favorites I haven't seen in a while, so I don't know how well they hold up today.
@this-is-krikkit @scienter @a-king-named-lear I would love to hear about your favorite films, but only If you wish to participate. This is a 100% pressure-free tag 😉

1994: A Great Year for Cinema
There seems to be a strange nostalgia for previous times amongst teens who did not live through that time. From what I have observed, the favored decade seems to be about 25-30 years prior to the current time. This specific time discrepancy makes me theorize that it has something to do with parents sharing their childhood stories with their kids, but I have no proof or research on this. I have noticed that as we have moved into the 2020's, the focus has shifted from the 80s to hit squarely on the 90s. This was my formative decade in which I was a teen and really first started to realize what was going on in the world. One thing that stands out to me was my introduction to quality film, and the best year for film in that decade was 1994. I want to take a little trip back to the mid 90s, and we can take a look at some of the great (and a couple terrible) films from the mid 90s. Minor Spoiler Warning: I am going to summarize some films with some spoilers, so be aware before reading further.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Forrest Gump
This was the eventual Best Picture winner in a very contentious year for films. This is most definitely a complete story and deserving of the high praise it received. Tom Hanks also won the award for Best Actor and Robert Zemeckis won the award for Best Director. The movie is very memorable and the lines from Forrest are so quotable that it has made a lasting impression on the American subconscious. Definitely one of my favorite movies of all time and one of the best films to come out of the 90s.
Pulp Fiction
This was Quentin Tarantino's masterwork in the eyes of many and it was an example of standout acting for Samuel L. Jackson, John Travolta, and Uma Thurman. This film paved the way for heavy dialogue and slick characters in mainstream action films that came after this. On the note of mainstream, this film was technically considered an independent film at the time, but all of the accolades have promoted it into the mainstream. Because of the non-linear timeline, this film is one of the most rewatchable pieces of media ever created.
The Shawshank Redemption
Arguably the best Stephen King adaptation of all time, this film is filled with great performances and a great script. The score is exceptional, and the cinematography is stand out. It is still ranked the best film of all time on IMDB members poll, and the Academy said they would have given this film Best Picture over Forrest Gump if the award was given today. Although I love Tom Hanks, this was objectively the smartest story and the best acting of the year. The prison escape reveal might be the best 10-15 minutes of storytelling in a Hollywood movie ever.
The Lion King
The highest grossing film of 1994, this was one of Disney's most successful animated films of all time. The music is great, the story is based off the Shakespearean story of Hamlet, and the animation was fantastic. Truly one of the Disney classics.
Interview with the Vampire
Cans you imagine a movie with both Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise? I can. This was a time when Ann Rice was writing horror novels that were bringing attention back to vampires and gothic atmosphere. This was also the breakout role for Kirsten Dunst, a little fashion model at the time. This was actually a really good movie and Tom Cruise as Lestat was pretty amazing. Definitely worth a watch.
Four Weddings and a Funeral
This was the beginning of the Hugh Grant as a romantic lead series written by Richard Curtis. This was the beginning of some of the most successful rom coms including Notting Hill, Bridgette Jones Diary, and Love Actually. Everybody loved that bumbling Hugh Grant character around the turn of the millennium, and this started it all. The film was actually nominated for both Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. It was extremely well written, especially for a romantic comedy.
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective
I don't like this movie at all, but I recognize what a large effect it had on American culture. People who liked the film quoted lines incessantly and tried to convince others about how genius it really was. People who hated it used it as a point of reference about how bad movies had become. Either way, everybody was talking about this film in the mid 90s.
Dumb and Dumber
Why is Jim Carrey the king of smart dumb comedies? Well, the year was 1994 and he starred in two of the dumbest, strangely-praised-by-other-comedians films ever. This film and Ace Ventura really established Carey the go-to physical comedian for many years. Again, not a movie that I personally enjoyed, but worth giving a chance because some people really loved this movie.
Reality Bites
Not that great of a movie, to be honest, but maybe the most 90s grunge film of all time. It has a killer soundtrack and stars Winona Ryder, Ethan Hawk, Janeane Garofalo, and Ben Stiller. It is quite a Gen-X story of young adults in the 90s: something that Millennials seem to be very curious about.
Speed
This was a big, dumb action movie that really solidified Keanu Reeves as an action film badass and Sandra Bullock as a leading love interest. I have seen this film many times and always laugh at how stupid it is...yet, I go back and watch it again and really enjoy it. Maybe it is a guilty pleasure, but I feel it is a fun, dumb movie.
The Crow
This was a fantastic dark action film based on a comic. This was a start to things like Spawn and Blade, which eventually lead to things like Guardians of the Galaxy and Deadpool. This was also famously the film in which Brandon Lee (son of Bruce Lee) was accidently killed on set. The irony and tragedy behind the film made this a really memorable viewing experience. And the film was pretty good to boot.
True Lies
This was a James Cameron big budget action film that was the third highest grossing film of the year. This is Arnold Schwarzenegger at his best: making witty puns, looking buff, and shooting the crap out of everything. This was also early days for the American Harrier Jet, the one that could hover like a helicopter. Tons of explosive action with an actual good story.
Clear and Present Danger
Tom Clancy novels were very popular amongst upper- and middle-class dads. My dad was definitely part of that group. It was a lot like taking Indiana Jones and sticking him in a more current era. This was the middle movie of the Clancy books that were turned into films, the others being The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, The Sum of All Fears, and Without Remorse. Clancy stories were also adapted into video games like Rainbow Six. Tom Clancy was very big in the 90s.
Natural Born Killers
This movie is quite the visual presentation. It is very similar to the way that Rob Zombie filmed his Devil's Rejects trilogy. Lots of psychedelic lighting, weird camera angles, and extreme violence. This movie was directed by Oliver Stone and based on a screenplay by Quentin Tarantino (who eventually disowned the film). The film was ranked in the top 10 most controversial by Entertainment Weekly. What I remember most about it is my mom getting motion sickness when we saw it at the theater.
The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert
A very important film to the LGBTQ+ community, this is the story of two drag queens and a transgender woman who are traveling through the Australian Outback in a tour bused called Priscilla. It is one of the few completely positive portrayals of LGBTQ+ individuals at the time, and the film has gained quite a following since. It stars Hugo Weaving and Guy Pierce in solid acting performances. This was a rather big hit with worldwide audiences, making $31 million off of a $2 million budget. This kind of success was a sign that the world at large was aware of the LGBTQ+ community and ready to begin the process of acceptance.
Quiz Show
This was a standout film that was nominated for Best Picture, but very much faded away into obscurity. It is the story of a cheating scandal on a game show back in the late 50s, something that would most definitely get a Netflix original today. The 50s were popular in the 80s and the 90s seem to favor the hippie era, which was very anti-establishment created in the 50s. The movie was considered long and boring by the younger movie going public, so it never got into the pop culture subconscious. It is still a fantastic movie.
Ed Wood
This movie has become a cult classic as reviewing bad movies has become popular. Groups like MSTK3000, RiffTrax, and Red Letter Media have made watching bad movies a fun past time. This is the story of the original bad movie maker, Ed Wood, and his film Plan 9 From Outer Space. Considered by many to be the worst film of all time, Plan 9 is filled with technical errors, terrible acting, and ridiculous settings and props. It is so bad that it is actually very enjoyable, and Ed Wood is the story of how the director managed to make the film. It stars Johnny Depp and is probably my favorite acting performance by him. Well worth a watch and it will make you want to check out some really poorly produced movies.
Hoop Dreams
This was a fantastic documentary that got rave reviews and no Oscar nominations. It is the story of a couple of kids in poor neighborhoods that were attempting to have a career as basketball players. This was a truly insightful look into the lives of talented individuals who were unfortunately born into poverty and how hard it is to "make it." It was a running joke to make fun of the Academy for a while for this egregious snub because the movie was ironically about big institutions ignoring people with low socio-economic status.
Clerks
Do you like the quick moving dialogue of Kevin Smith movies? Do you like Jay and Silent Bob? This one is the original made for less than $30,000 and made over $3 million at the box office. There is no action and no special effects, it is just a really well written story by Kevin Smith. It's not even filmed in color. It is a great example of a creative mind that just grabbed a camera and filmed their vision the best they could. Truly a micro budget success story.
Stargate
This was the beginning for the very popular sci-fi franchise. It stars Kurt Russell and James Spader as soldiers who go through an interdimensional passage and stop an alien who is ruling an Egyptian like culture. This was the work of Roland Emmerich before he started churning out garbage like Godzilla (1998), The Day After Tomorrow, and 10,000 BC. There were later accusations that Emmerich stole his ideas from Dr. Who and the film has lost favor because of the white savior spin. The TV show is very different and a lot better, but this is what started it all.
Leon: The Professional
I have written many an article about how great this film is, and I will continue to claim it as one of my favorite films. The acting of Jean Reno and Natalie Portman as the most unlikely of assassin partners is amazing. It is also the first film I had seen by Luc Besson, and I have since become a big fan. The concept that an abused young girl would be rescued and mentored by an assassin is the kind of concept that should be explored by film. Astounding movie that really needs to be seen.
Immortal Beloved
This was an interesting film that followed a trail of historical clues to try and track down Beethoven's lover that he mentioned in letters written right before his death. The woman was referred to only as "my immortal beloved." I don't want to give the film more credit than it deserves, but it does follow a similar path as Citizen Kane. Both films are a voyage of discovery about powerful men through interviews of their peers and acquaintances to find meaning in some enigmatic last words.
The Color of Night
I put this film on here because it has quite the reputation. It is one of the worst movies ever made (it won the Razzie for worst picture that year) and verges on softcore pornography at some points (Maxim magazine singled the film out for the best sex scene of all time). It is a film noir that is completely confusing with a terrible performance by Bruce Willis. By the way, Bruce Willis plays a psychologist that deals with the death of a client he couldn't save. Maybe M. Night Shyamalan was a fan?
Cemetery Man (Dellamorte Dellamore)
This is just a personal favorite, but man do I like this film. It is a French film in which an undertaker is forced to go out zombie hunting because the bodies in his cemetery keep coming back to life. It is so funny because Rupert Everett plays the character as simply inconvenienced because he has to keep killing off zombies. Things change when he finds somebody who died that he wants to come back. He also happens to have a little Igor-like assistant that helps around the grounds. It is really good if you like horror.
The Mask
Here is Jim Carrey again and I would doubt that anyone would argue that this wasn't his best year as far as films. This was standout my favorite Carrey film of the 3 that he put out in 1994 and also was the breakout role for Cameron Diaz. The over-the-top cartoonish nature of the film really fits Carrey's acting style and is one of my favorite roles I have ever seen him in. He also has a song credit for Cuban Pete, which is quite a catchy song and dance number in the movie.
The Santa Clause
Not my favorite, however, this film has been voted the best Christmas film by many outlets. It stars Tim Allen as a man who is forced to take the role of Santa Claus. There is a heartwarming story of a divorced dad bonding with his son and finding a place in the lives of his ex-wife and her new husband. It is pretty sappy, but that is exactly what most people want in a Christmas film.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
There were 100s of movies that came out that year and I remember going to the mall on a pretty regular basis to check out a flick. Another thing I remember about that year was the number of new faces that I would see rise to stardom. In that group of debuts was Jessica Alba, Claire Danes, Cameron Diaz, Scarlett Johansson, Jude Law, Haley Joel Osment, Natalie Portman, JK Simmons, Kenan Thompson, Mark Wahlberg, Chris Tucker, and Kate Winslet. In my opinion, it was an amazing year for movies and a good place to start if you want to get a real feel for 90s popular culture.

📽 The Rewrite (2014)
One of my favorite movies is Music and Lyrics. This movie was from the same director with the same leading man, Hugh Grant. Now, this might be weird and unpopular, but I love me some Hugh Grant. It’s not that I think he’s good-looking or funny or anything like that, there’s just something about him that I really like in a movie. Anyway, I figured since he was in it and it was the same director as Music and Lyrics, it was probably good. Well, so I watched it with my mom. I thought it was great! My mother did not. My mom thought it was boring and dragged too much, which it did, but I liked the story. It’s not my favorite, but I would watch it again, even if my mom wouldn’t.
Sex/nudity: 4/10
Language: 4/10
Violence: 2/10
Overall rating: 6/10

Best Movies Coming to Netflix in May 2021
https://ift.tt/3vzaZUu
Movies are slowly coming back to life at the cinemas. You can see it with each glowing report about a Godzilla vs. Kong or Mortal Kombat doing solid business. And for those with more discerning tastes, films like In the Heights and Those Who Wish Me Dead are definitely going to make their release dates.
Nonetheless, there are many who are understandably not ready to go back to theaters (or have yet to get an HBO Max subscription). Thus Netflix remains an old reliable option. While the Netflix movie selection can be narrow, each month offers some worthwhile gems to revisit or even discover. And May has a surprisingly robust group of Hollywood films from the last 40 years coming to the streaming service on May 1. Here are the best ones.
Back to the Future (1985)
Great Scott! Back to the Future is coming to Netflix. As one of the most beloved films of the 1980s—if not ever—it’s doubtful we need to explain in great detail why this is exciting news. From its star-making turn by Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly to the grand musical score by Alan Silvestri, everything about this movie justworks. Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale’s script is like a Swiss watch in precision, paying off every single setup in the film’s first act when Marty commandeers a time machine made by Doc Brown (a lovable Christopher Lloyd) and accidentally travels from 1985 to 1955… to meet his parents as teenagers!
More time has passed since the movie’s release than the once massive generational gap between the film’s primarily ‘50s setting and 1985. Yet it still plays as a timeless story about family, time travel, and manure. Large piles of manure. By the way, the rest of the Back to the Future trilogy is coming to Netflix, too.
Hachi: A Dog’s Tale (2009)
Forget about all the “sad” dog movies of the last decade where canines have funny voiceover narrations and then die on repeat. Hachi: A Dog’s Tale is a very bitter, bittersweet dog’s journey based on a harder truth. A remake of the 1980s Japanese film, Hachikō Monogatari, this American movie is based on the real events surrounding Hachikō, an Akita dog who lived in 1920s Japan. Every day Hachikō would run to the train station, awaiting his master’s return from work. One day, after a fatal stroke, his master never returned. Yet for another 10 years, the dog would escape its various new owners and spend the afternoon waiting at the station.
Directed by The Cider House Rules’ Lasse Hallström, Hachi captures this anecdote about a dog’s loyalty with grace and genuine sweetness. But you’re not going to get through it dry-eyed.
The Land Before Time (1988)
Before it birthed a string of straight-to-video movies meant to babysit pint-sized millennials, the original Land Before Time was a generational touchstone for childhoods in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. Overseen by Don Bluth at the height of his talent, and in partnership with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment, The Land Before Time is a marvel in animation from the period before Disney Animation’s renaissance. It follows an assortment of baby dinosaurs, including a recently orphaned “longneck” named Littlefoot, after a horrible earthquake has rained devastation on all the isolated herbivores. But together they may just find salvation in a land called the Great Valley.
Essentially a dinosaur road movie for children, to the modern eye it’s told with a surprisingly delicate sensitivity. There is no fourth-wall breaking humor and sideways smirks here. It’s a very earnest fairytale captured in the lost art of hand-drawn animation.
The Lovely Bones (2009)
Based on Alice Sebold’s 2002 bestselling book of the same name, The Lovely Bones has a tough premise: a teen girl is raped and murdered, and goes to heaven where she watches her loved ones attempt to process and move on after her disappearance. The debut novel was not only very popular, but generally well-received for its treatment of trauma, sexual assault, and grief.
The movie, directed by Peter Jackson and starring Saoirse Ronan, Rachel Weisz, Susan Sarandon, and Stanley Tucci, among others… was not as well received, fairly criticized for its prioritization of CGI heavenly visuals over a nuanced, character-driven story. You may wonder, then, why we’re recommending a movie that wasn’t great? Because The Lovely Bones is a fascinating watch for those interested in the limits of adaptation and, in particular, how a great filmmaker with expansive resources (including a very talented cast) can fail if they’re not the right person for the job.
Mystic River (2003)
As one of Clint Eastwood’s best films as director, Mystic River was the first cinematic adaptation of a Dennis Lehane novel, and the author’s hardboiled vision of Boston’s tragically seedy underbelly is well realized here. As much about the hard luck community on the South Side as the story of three men, it nonetheless tracks how neighborhood lives intersect.
We meet three boyhood friends in the movie’s unnerving opening and then jump to their bitter middle age. Oe of them, reformed gangster Jimmy (Sean Penn), has a daughter who’s been found murdered in a gutter. His onetime pal Sean (Kevin Bacon), now a detective, swears he’ll figure out who the killer is, and both men’s estranged acquaintance Dave (Tim Robbins) knows more than he’s letting on. All three’s fates are interlinked in this operatic passion play about the traumas we keep hidden until we’re drowning in regret.
Notting Hill (1999)
Though Four Weddings and a Funeral might have put writer Richard Curtis and star Hugh Grant on the map as the kings of ‘90s British romance, Notting Hill is arguably their true pinnacle. Grant plays a foppish bookshop owner who happens to meet the most famous actress in the world, Anna Scott (played by Julia Roberts who might just have been the most famous actress in the world at that time) when she stumbles into his shop.

Zombie Comedies Ranked

From the sympathy brownie competition, the junket where Grant’s William Thacker has to pretend to be a journalist from Horse & Hound, and Rhys Ifans in his pants, there are plenty of funny, moving moments. But it’s the two montage scenes—a walk through Notting Hill as seasons change to Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine,” and the final montage to Elvis Costello’s “She”—that would melt the hardest of hearts. Rom-com perfection.
Scarface (1983)
Reviews were not initially kind to Scarface, director Brian de Palma’s explosive three-hour remake of the 1932 gangster classic starring Paul Muni (that in turn was based on a novel which loosely chronicled the rise of Al Capone). Written by Oliver Stone and starring Al Pacino as psychopathic Cuban refugee-turned-drug-kingpin Tony Montana, the 1983 film was excoriated by critics for its relentlessly graphic violence, excessive foul language, and over-the-top performances, especially by its leading man. But critics at the time missed the point: Scarface was a reflection of its time—the hedonistic, greed-driven, cocaine-fueled ‘80s—and was appropriately and utterly crazed as a result.
The film did mark the moment when Pacino transitioned from intense, thoughtful character actor to (mostly) histrionic circus barker, but he leaves it all on the field and his mania drives the fast-paced film to its epic, bloodsoaked, and unbelievable (in all aspects of the word) conclusion. As a metaphor for the insane decade of excess that birthed it, Scarface is riveting, breathless, occasionally shocking and often unintentionally hilarious. It’s the gangster movie on coke.
State of Play (2009)
Kevin Macdonald’s remake of a British miniseries by the same name turned out to be a strong thriller in its own right. With a whip smart script by Tony Gilroy and Billy Ray, this movie doubles as both an enjoyable investigative procedural and a love letter to journalism just as newspapers were beginning to die out in the 2000s. Russell Crowe plays Cal McAffrey in the film, the last of the old school guard of reporters, but his ethics will be challenged when the congressman with a dead young woman on his staff turns out to be his old college buddy (Ben Affleck). Rachel McAdams also stars as a young blogger who learns the thrill of chasing a story that takes more than an afternoon to research. Helen Mirren, Robin Wright, and Jeff Daniels also star.
The Whole Nine Yards (2000)
Remember when they made comedies for adults? The Whole Nine Yards is one such anomaly. Really a buddy film about a suicidal dentist (Matthew Perry) and a gangster living under a phony alias who moves in next door (Bruce Willis in one of his last truly charming performances), this giggles and gangsters laugher is a secretly delightful ensemble movie with a deep bench of talent. Indeed, Kevin Pollack, Amanda Peet, Nastsha Henstridge, and Michael Clarke Duncan, as the cuddliest gangster you’ll ever see punch your protagonist in the balls until he’s pissing blood, all get to shine. With a twisty plot, it’s an R-rated throwback to the type of screwball shenanigans that were once Hollywood’s bread and butter.
Zombieland (2009)
It’s rare when calling something the second best zombie comedy ever made is high praise, but in a horror subgenre that also includes Shaun of the Dead, this is high praise for Zombieland. As an R-rated teen comedy, one suspects the filmmakers almost lucked into the absurdly talented cast they assembled with Emma Stone, Jessie Eisenberg, and Woody Harrelson. In the years since this movie’s release, all three were nominated for Oscars (Stone even won one), but in ’09 they’re just having a blast with this goofy stoner hybrid about a dysfunctional makeshift family having fun during the zombie apocalypse.
Also, it features arguably the greatest comedy cameo ever conceived. If you haven’t seen it, I’m not going to spoil it for you here either…

“oh! i’ve made the wrong decision, haven’t i?”
i. william thacker // notting hill (1999)
luca is, at his core, sort of a bumbling idiot. truly, every time i watch this movie, i can’t tell the difference between them. will’s constantly making bad decisions, running around like a fool and risking it all for any chance at being loved. and then - in the end - he still manages to make the wrong decisions for himself, even if the right answer is obvious. i feel like luca is a bumbling hugh grant type, anyways, so you can find a bit of him in pretty much any 90s rom com starring hugh grant because jesus christ this dude gives off awkard vibes for MILES.
here’s a few scenes that really give me luca energy:
“oh, i’ve made the wrong decision haven’t i?” the luca vibes of fucking up and realizing it literally two hours later. also rhiannon is his insane roommate spike, no i won’t elaborate.
the “whoopsie daisies” scene really just. it has all the awkwardness of luca trying to interact with anyone ever so. jot that down.
i just think this scene is funny sorry i had to include it
ii. ben wyatt // parks and recreation (2009 - 2015)
let’s be real with each other: the invasion was definitely luca’s version of “ice town costs ice clown his town crown”. i have to laugh because of that, but the manic energy of ben wyatt managed to fit luca perfectly. i think ben carries the same “constantly fucking things up” energy that luca does, and he also has that awkward manner of interacting, even if luca definitely lacks that deadpan sense of humor that ben wyatt’s known for. also, during luca’s super depressive phases he would try to make “requiem for a tuesday”
here’s a few scenes that really give me luca energy:
"do you think a depressed person could make this?” - luca trying to convince anyone he doesn’t have depression and failing wildly.
the ice town chronicles is. yeah.
“who hasn’t had gay thoughts?”
iii. danny tanner // full house (1987 - 1995)
i’m just going to say it: luca d’ansembourg is what would have happened if a sitcom dad accidentally became king of a small country. and i will also, full disclosure, admit that i hated full house as a kid. but danny tanner in half of the clips i can find of him is just... the “proud widower dad” energy is too much and i just. why are half the 90s tv dads widowers? anyways! danny tanner was really trying his best to raise his daughters right and i think that’s the number one reason that i get luca vibes off him.
here’s a few examples:
the dumbass energy that he carries in this collection is. luca vibes.
this collection of scenes is luca vs anna & liza during the invasion SO.
iv. bruce banner // marvel cinematic universe
i think most of this is the way that bruce banner in the mcu constantly reads like a strange, repressed and definitely depressed dude. all of which hold luca energy. even if i feel like luca doesn’t have the ability to “hulk out”or even truly get mad enough to get close, i think that the whole “suffering through everything” angle really fits him, too.
anyways here’s the scenes with luca vibes:
the not knowing how to do a fistbump in this scene. i just-
the entirety of this video
v. maxwell sheffield // the nanny
i won’t lie - i actually wrote my app for luca while i was watching “the nanny” and somewhere along the line my wires got crossed and i accidentally made luca a whole lot like mr. sheffield. oops! anyways, the widower with a heart of gold who adores his children and is weird about being allowed to move on from his spouse? yeah. that’s both of them. i hate this realization, because it’s only made me want to rewatch the nanny over again for like the 5th time this year.
have i mentioned that this is my favorite show ever? anyways! here’s some clips:
"i’m 42 years old and what have i achieved?”
the entire “imaginary friend” sequence.
vi. george mcfly // back to the future
now - this is all because luca is a goddamn doormat, just like george mcfly in the first back to the future movie. if luca wasn’t a royal, he’d be the guy getting bullied and forced into doing some asshole’s homework. also - it’s about the whole “loser gets the girl” trope, that’s basically the story of luca’s marriage. anyways! i think another point is that george gets this “big damn hero” moment, and i can definitely see luca managing that by complete accident, too. so.
ok here’s my 3 favorite george mcfly moments:
getting bullied is luca energy
going through the plan over and over again. luca before ever event.
the “big damn hero” moment
#hshqtask041#this. this was fun. but also realizing i created a sitcom dad and accidentally let him run a country was. less fun.#JFSDKLFj#deadass i hate how this turned out but i don't want to look at it for another second so here you go everyone else has to suffer

Hugh Dancy: Not just another heart-throb Hugh
Hollywood, watch out. There's a new charming, floppy-haired British actor in town. But Hugh Dancy is much more than a conventional rom-com hero. Gaynor Flynn meets him 07/08/2009
British actor Hugh Dancy is staring out the window at a small lake of screaming fans. If they weren't yelling out things like "I love you, Hugh" and "you're a hottie, Hugh" he wouldn't believe they were here for him. He looks around nevertheless. Nope. No sign of Jackman, Grant or Laurie – so he must be the Hugh they want. The 34-year-old had "noticed" things had been a bit different of late. Since Confessions of a Shopaholic to be exact, which was released earlier this year. The fact that he was cast in the shiny romcom was proof that after playing the love interest in dramas like Daniel Deronda, King Arthur and The Jane Austen Book Club, ensembles that were then about bigger names than him, Hollywood decided he was ready to carry a film. In other words, they thought his heart-throb oomph would equal box office dollars. It did – over $45m of them. Dancy probably hoped his latest film, Adam, might extinguish the heart-throb thing a bit. Unlikely, because even though he's neither dashing nor debonair in this story (Adam has Asperger's syndrome) he is adorable. Best not mention that now though. The man has enough on his plate. Directed by Max Mayer (Better Living), Adam is a story about a young man who is highly intelligent but emotionally inept because of his condition. When the bubbly Beth (Australian actress Rose Byrne), moves into the apartment above, he begins to build the personal relationship he desperately desires. The only problem is, he has absolutely no idea how to go about it. It's a lovely little film about the difficulties of making a real connection with another human being. The film won the Alfred P Sloan award at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. "I didn't think 'lovely little film'," laughs Dancy when asked what piqued his interest about the role. "I thought 'that is bloody huge'. But my first reaction was to realise how little I knew and how much I would have to learn." He dutifully read "everything", hung out with people with "Aspys", and "observed, observed, observed". Still, it must have been a daunting task? "You always worry about whether you can pull something off," he says. "It's part of the process. Unquestioning confidence in yourself is not an advantage in this game, particularly. So I'm fairly self-critical. Having said that, we're not making a documentary, we're telling a love story." Fans of Extras will no doubt remember Kate Winslet's skit about how "playing a mental" is a ploy for an Oscar. Dancy laughs. He insists it wasn't about showing off his Rain Man skills. "I didn't expect anyone to go see this film," he says. "I did it because it's a way to subvert certain expectations people might have about me. I mean, I'm not running from success but I wasn't thinking 'Oscar'." It was a smart move because people are beginning to associate Dancy with the romance genre and, while Adam is technically a romantic comedy, it's an unconventional one to say the least. "I don't sit there and think 'well I did Confessions of a Shopaholic and now I've got to go out and do Chekhov'," he says. "If the next one that comes along happens to be another romantic comedy and I find something in it that appeals to me then great. I operate on almost no system at all." What appealed here was how we all have a bit of Adam in us. "Adam can see the love, the contact other people have but he doesn't know how to achieve it or express it," says Dancy. "We've all felt those frustrations and those desires to reach across and realise someone fully and most of the time we can't." Dancy is notoriously guarded about his private life, but a comment like that begs the question, so when was the last time he felt that desire and for whom? His vivid blue eyes flash. "I haven't had that particular experience in a while," he says coolly. Dancy is engaged to American actress Claire Danes. The pair met in 2007 on the set of Evening, an intense, but rather forgettable drama. Not long after that he ended a 10-year relationship with British artist Annie Morris. Rumour has it that the pair will wed in France this September. Dancy won't confirm or deny those reports. "Can we change the subject?" he asks. You wonder how he will cope with the scrutiny in the long term. Being one-half of a Hollywood couple doesn't equal anonymity. They're already papped relentlessly and the interest will only increase with his profile. "You can choose how much to let that into your life," he says. "And I find that it's peripheral and I don't even like talking about it, because I find it to be a distraction. And it's something that doesn't usually come up in my life until I do these interviews. I mean, I understand the interest. I'm not saying 'holier than thou', but it's not an issue in my life." Dancy is brilliant in Adam, so it's rather surprising to learn that he wasn't even on Mayer's original wish list. "I didn't think he had the necessary insecurities," says Mayer. You wonder what Dancy makes of that. "Being rejected is always hard to take," he laughs. "Sometimes it's based on criteria that feels a little shallow, but you have to accept they know best or you'd go crazy. So, generally, I'm more conscious of how lucky I've been rather than the opportunities I haven't had." Despite the Zen-like spiel, he went after Adam with a "vengeance" and after a two-hour meeting the director decided Dancy did possess the "prerequisite insecurities". Like what? "I'll let Hugh answer that," laughs Mayer.
Dancy smiles wryly. "I don't think I'm any more insecure than the next person. I try not to let myself become too neurotic. To some extent paranoia in this industry is just a realistic outlook, it comes with the territory, but I try not to drive myself totally insane." Dancy was 17 when he realised he'd already made the decision to become an actor. "Subconsciously that idea was there," he says. "But I didn't immediately want to become a professional actor. I wanted to go to university. So I studied literature at Oxford [he's sort of like the male version of Natalie Portman], but I also knew down the line that's what I'd try and do for a living. I'd been acting at school in a pretty serious way since I was about 13." Dancy is the son of the British philosopher Jonathan Dancy. His mother, Sarah, is a freelance editor for Oxford University Press. His brother, Jack, owns a travel company in Paris. His sister, Kate, works for Save the Children. Dancy was 10 when he was sent to board at the Dragon School in Oxford. Once puberty hit he became a "bit of a tearaway". Girls, booze and cigarettes all landed him in trouble. One day he was sent to the drama department as penance. He never left. He waited tables for a time after Oxford and "contemplated" the fact that he might not make it. "I think anyone with half an ounce of intelligence has to allow for that possibility," he says. "Because the odds are stacked against you. But I got very lucky very quickly, so my commitment was never really tested in that way. "But at the same time I was very clear about why I wanted to do it." Which is? "I love it and it gives me immense satisfaction. My only goal now is to continue doing it.”

Jesse St. James or Jesse Hughes, was born on the 8th of March, 1989 to a single mother. He never knew his real father and his mother never spoke of him. From what he can remember, his relationship with his mom was rough. She was always working and whenever he got to see her, she would be sleeping. Leaving him to find ways to entertain himself. The main escape he had, was to watch Disney. He adored Disney as a child. He loved pretending to be Tarzan, Hercules and Captain Hook. Sure, Hook was a villain, but he was a damn fun villain. And, what? Was he going to be Simba? No thanks, way too much fur.
When he was four years old however, things went a bit south for the Hughes family. One day, he waited outside of the school for his mom to come and pick him up, but she never came. He waited and waited and eventually, a staff member phoned. A police man answered. Apparently, his mother had been in a car crash. She had survived but the person who she had crashed into, did not.
His mother was facing time for ‘man slaughter’ and Jesse was put into a group home while the trial began. He doesn’t remember the details; all he could remember was his mom never picked him up from school and now he was living with strangers. He missed his videos. He missed his heroes.
Denise Hughes was convicted of the crime and was sentenced to 16 months in prison and as a result, lost custody of Jesse. He didn’t know why he couldn’t see his mom again; all he knew was he had to wait for his ‘new family’.
A year later, the new family arrived. Jesse came back from school and found two strange men in his foster home. They introduced themselves and said Jesse could come and stay with them for a few days. He thought it was strange that it was two boys, but he went along.
Their house was so cool! They had a big room for him to stay in, lots of stuffed animals and best of all, a Disney collection! Jesse loved spending time with his two dads, and he grew close to him. Very close.
When the time came, they adopted Jesse and gave him the new last name, St. James. He was now Jesse St. James and loved his new life with his new gay dads. He felt very blessed to be with them, even if it came with bullying from the school yard. He didn’t care, whenever people would ask; ‘why do you have two dads?’, he would just smile and shrug.
“Because having one dad is boring.” That was his usual response. He tended to ignore the questions about his mom though. He wasn’t sure on the whole situation himself!
Two years later, the house became a little fuller. His dads had a baby! Which was crazy because he knew it was so rare for a gay couple to have a child. Yet, his fathers had been lucky and along came his little brother, Scott. He never really asked about Scott’s mom because he knew the problems that came with him losing his own mom.
It was difficult to connect to his brother when he was seven years older than him. He always tried his best, but Scott began to like things that Jesse had just grown out of. However, he was delighted when he found out Scott also enjoyed Peter Pan. Every year Jesse would go dressed as Hook, and much to his distaste, Scott would go as the crocodile. Their dads found this hilarious, Jesse not so much.
High School was a challenge, not in terms of classes, Jesse was actually highly gifted in academics. But the bullying became worse. So bad that he couldn’t go outside during breaks, instead he’d either hide away in the library or the choir room.
Jesse was quick to sign up for as many clubs as possible, but he found his heart in the theatre department. He became obsessed with plays and musicals; he found himself listening to cast albums on repeat. Jesse was a natural-born theatre kid.
Throughout high school, he was the shining star of the drama department. He was the lead in everything, and this only went to his head. He was the kind of the school in drama and show choir. He knew it was where he belonged. So much so, with a lot of help from his parents, he found himself applying for drama schools.
Jesse was accepted into Marymount Manhattan College with a Major in Acting and a Minor in Musical Theatre. It was a tough four years, but Jesse made it out of the other side a stronger person. During his showcase performance, he was picked up by an agent, Yvette. Overcome with joy, he signed on the dotted line.
He had every desire to make it as a star. Jesse worked closely with Yvette and she found him a lot of play work, occasional ensemble work in musicals but nothing great. Getting a little tired of her lack of roles for him, Jesse left her and signed up with a new agency. This one, was the one to get him into the world.
At Twenty-Four years old, he was cast as the lead in Book of Mormon, the role was everything he had dreamt it would be. He loved signing autographs at the stage door and most of all, he loved achieving his dream.
But even with everything going right, something was still wrong… He had been in relationships before, but nothing ever felt right. He enjoyed his time with the girls he was with, but he knew something was off.
One night, at a cast party, one of Jesse’s cast members kissed him and suddenly everything became clearer. He liked guys! With having two gay dads, he had never considered the fact that he himself could be gay. He never had a problem with the idea, but he had also never pushed himself to try.
Delighted, Jesse felt somewhat altogether. He put in for some personal days with the show and headed home. He knew he had to come out to his family in person. When he arrived in Washington, Jesse soon found out that Scott had been kicked out. He wasn’t in a hurry to ask why, instead he jumped in his car and drove around looking for his little brother. It was two hours later until he finally had a call off Scott telling him where he was.
The two had a much needed catch up and Scott was the first person Jesse came out too. Jesse had a small apartment he paid for in Washington that was his first home away from home. Granted, he wasn’t there often as New York was his main habitat, but it was big enough for two.
After the family discussion, when all was said and done, Jesse came out to his dads in private and spent some more time with his brother. While he was in New York, he wasn’t around a lot and he knew he hadn’t been the best brother. Jesse wanted to try and fix that with the few days he had left before he had to return to the show.
When he got back to New York, he continued in the show for a year, even stayed with his cast mate who had kissed him, for a year too. After the first year, Jesse was picked up for another musical. An off-Broadway revival of Heathers. He stayed with the show until in closed and then bam, straight into another musical.
After the third year of Broadway, Jesse got bored and pushed his agents to find him new work, this time in TV. He did a lot of voice over work for cartoons and then eventually found his face on the TV screens. He had a guest spot on a few episodes of a popular sitcom and after that, hit what he thought would be his big break, an actual movie.
It was a cheesy rom-com and he played the love interest, but it flopped. Hard. He was pissed but this did nothing for his career. He decided to go back to what he was best at, Broadway. Even though he was twenty-eight, he could still pull off a few young roles. He was even lucky enough to play King George in Hamilton.
As his 28th birthday came along, he started to feel stuck. He had ticked off all his bucket list and now what? Where did he go next? He was nearly thirty and sure, he could keep doing theatre or voice over work but… It was satisfying anymore. Jesse decided it was time to give back.
When he started out, he hadn’t had the best agent. So, why not be the best agent there could ever be? He had made enough contacts by now. He could do this. Raise a new generation and take in the new world as a manager.
He found talent quickly enough in Cordelia Wilde. In a way, she reminded him of Scott, they were of a similar age and perhaps this was a chance to connect more with people his brothers age. Jesse met up with her when he had the chance, told her of his past and how much experience he had in show business.
Fortune favoured him and he signed the contracts to become her manager. He saw a lot of potential in her and while this was a whole new world to him, he loved the challenge.
As a manager, Jesse is tough. He’s firm and hates lateness. If anyone was ever late when he was a director on Broadway, he’d make them do laps. That didn’t change her. He followed his school’s spirit of pushing people to their edge. He was soft too. If he ever found himself going too far, he would treat Cordie and the rest of her ensemble to dinner.
His only goal now, is to make sure Cordelia becomes even more iconic than she already is. Even if it means finding ways to help her stand out. He admired her past PR relationships and still looks for potential people he could hook her up with, if they were good enough for her, that is.
