“A Musical Genius:” Garth Hudson Dies at 87
- Multi-instrumentalist was last surviving member of the Band
Garth Hudson, the last surviving founding member of the Band, has died.
The multi-instrumentalist, widely considered one of rock’s premier keyboardists, was 87 when he died Jan. 21 at a nursing home in New York, the Toronto Star reported.
“Rest in peace, Garth Hudson,” Orleans’ John Hall said. “Fly on one of those skirling, ascending lines of notes that flew through you and out from your fingers. Thank you.”
Hudson was the last member, following guitarist Robbie Robertson, bassist Rick Danko, keyboardist and drummer Richard Manuel and drummer/mandolinist Levon Helm to join Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks. They eventually morphed into Bob Dylan’s backing band and then, simply, the Band.
“Today, we sadly say goodbye to Garth ‘Honey Boy’ Hudson, the last living original member of the Band,” said a statement on the group’s social media pages.
“A musical genius and cornerstone of the group’s timeless sound, Garth once said, ‘I found some true enjoyment in helping people get to the bottom of their feelings.’ Through his music, he did just that - helping us all feel more deeply and connect to something greater. Rest easy, Garth.”
Hudson played horns, accordion and keyboards. His organ intro to “Chest Fever” - improvised and expanded to be known and “The Genetic Method” on stage - is the stuff of legend.
“He incorporated all of American music - vaudeville, jazz, classical, R&B and rock ‘n’ roll in his playing and arrangements,” John Papa Gros said of Hudson. “We will be studying his musical contributions for decades to come.”
After the Band’s initial breakup, Hudson did session work before joining his former Band mates - save Robertson - in a new version of the group. That band made three albums; Hudson also released a couple of solo records.
But his - and the Band’s - legacy is best encapsulated by the years between 1968’s Music from Big Pink and 1977’s Islands when a group of Canadians basically invented Americana music.
“May Garth Hudson rest in peace and Love,” Todd Rundgren’s Spirit of Harmony Foundation said.

Lehigh & Hudson River Railway Baldwin (built 1944) 4-8-2 Mountain steam locomotive 11 leads a southbound manifest freight train past a tower protecting the New York, Ontario & Western Railroad diamond at Campbell Hall, New York, late 1940's. If you notice there is an over sized load on the flat car situated directly behind the tender. At the front end of this train are numerous gondolas and hopper cars along with a few boxcars. You may observe the engineer is looking ahead out of his cab window. To the right is the block signal that protects the diamond ahead by the tower.

Rock had an extensive collection of original Judy Garland photographs and was a big fan of hers. He was at the famous Judy Garland concert at Carnegie Hall. Lorna Luft, Judy’s daughter, who was 8 at the time of the concert, retells it on the Carnegie Hall website:

The tall man smiling next to Judy’s hand is most likely Rock but his face is not entirely visible so its not confirmed.

They were friendly and Judy leaned on him when she needed emotional support.

Can’t stop thinking about how after this when her dad says that is just speculation and she replies that it isn’t speculation because she lived it like…can you imagine that pain she has been harboring for 5 weeks??
She basically woke up from the most “that was so intensely real I feel strange feelings” dreams EVER where she lost both Ryan AND Ace but also she felt such unbridled happiness alongside that pain. And it wasn’t a dream. It was a premonition. It wasn’t foggy after you wake up like a dream. It was clear and palpable.
She knows deeply what it feels like to both finally be in love and loved by Ace and also what it feels like to lose him and she’s just had to sit with that for five weeks like no wonder she can’t find a fucking ferret
