The Chinese government announced Tuesday it is opening an investigation into Google in response to 10 percent tariffs imposed on Chinese imports by US president Donald Trump. Minutes after the tariffs went into effect, China’s State Administration for Market Regulation said it was probing the American tech giant for potentially violating the country’s anti-monopoly law.
The Chinese government may have strategically chosen to go after Google because it has limited operations in the country, ensuring the hit to the US tech giant would be relatively minimal. The move gives China plenty of room to escalate if the Trump administration announces further tariffs or other trade measures. Google declined to comment.
China also announced it was putting more restrictions on the sale of some critical minerals like tungsten and slapping additional tariffs on farm equipment, pickup trucks, liquified natural gas, coal, and other goods from the US. While the US isn’t reliant on China for all of the impacted minerals, the country does control the majority of the world’s tungsten supply, which is used in light bulbs, semiconductors, and ammunition.
“China’s position is firm and consistent. Trade and tariff wars have no winners,” China’s Ministry of Foreign affairs said in a statement Sunday shortly after the tariffs were announced. “This move cannot solve the US’s problems at home and, more importantly, does not benefit either side, still less the world.”
China has kept Google in its crosshairs during the ongoing trade war with the US over the last few years. In 2020, the government reportedly considered opening an antitrust investigation into Google's Android business, according to Reuters. The deliberations followed a complaint from Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei, which was targeted by Trump during his first term.
Because of US sanctions, Huawei is unable to use American-made software like Google Mobile Services, a suite of tools widely used across the smartphone industry. The restrictions forced the company to develop its own operating system called Harmony OS.
But most smartphones around the world still run on Android, which has sparked competition investigations in a number of countries, some of which have led to concessionary changes designed to give consumers and app developers more choices and lower fees. In China, several smartphone makers continue to rely on an open source version of Android.
This past December, Chinese authorities also opened an anti-monopoly investigation into Nvidia, the chipmaker whose GPUs play a crucial role in the development of generative AI and have become a significant source of trade sparring between the US and China. The announcement came soon after the Biden administration further tightened China’s access to high-end semiconductors.
About 15 years ago, Google stopped offering a search experience tailored for China following a series of Chinese government-linked cyberattacks against it and other US companies. Google debated reentering China with a search engine about seven years ago, but the project was scuttled following protests from some employees concerned about supporting Chinese surveillance and censorship.
Google has also stopped short of directly selling cloud technologies in China, as local laws could threaten the privacy and security assurances it offers to customers in other markets. Other Google services such as YouTube are blocked by Chinese internet regulators.
China has allowed domestic companies to buy advertisements through Google so that they can market to customers abroad. But the revenue from those deals is relatively small, and China didn't even garner a mention in parent company Alphabet's annual financial report last year. That stands in contrast to Meta, which lists China among its biggest markets in terms of advertiser location and said last year that China-based advertisers account for 10 percent of its annual revenue.

Let’s dive right in! Ever wished you could use two WhatsApp accounts on your single phone? Juggling work and personal chats, managing family groups, and keeping your business communications separate can feel like a constant switch between devices. It’s frustrating, right? You’re constantly reaching for your tablet or second phone, losing precious time and feeling overwhelmed. Well, the good news is, you don’t have to! This guide will walk you through several ways to use two WhatsApp accounts on one phone, explaining each method step-by-step, so you can finally say goodbye to that juggling act. We’ll cover everything from using dual apps features built into your phone to exploring third-party apps (with important safety considerations, of course!). Get ready to simplify your digital life!
Using Two WhatsApp Accounts on One Phone: A Comprehensive Guide
Managing multiple WhatsApp accounts on a single device is easier than you might think. This guide will explore various methods, helping you choose the best option for your phone and needs. We’ll cover both official and unofficial methods, highlighting the pros and cons of each.
Method 1: Using Your Phone’s Built-in Dual App Feature
Many modern smartphones, especially those from Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, and Oppo, include a built-in feature called “Dual Apps,” “Dual Messenger,” or something similar. This feature allows you to create a clone of an app, effectively letting you run two instances of the same app simultaneously.
How to Use Dual Apps for WhatsApp:
Locate the Feature: Check your phone’s settings. The exact location varies by manufacturer, but look for terms like “Dual Apps,” “Dual Messenger,” “App Twin,” or “Parallel Apps.” It’s often found under “Apps,” “Applications,” or “Advanced Features.”
Enable WhatsApp: Once you find the dual app feature, you should see a list of compatible apps. Find WhatsApp and toggle the switch to enable it. Your phone will then create a second WhatsApp icon.
Set Up Your Second Account: Launch the second WhatsApp icon. You’ll be prompted to log in with your second phone number. Follow the standard WhatsApp setup process.
Pros and Cons of Using Dual Apps:
Pros: Simple, built-in, no extra apps needed, usually very reliable.
Cons: Not all phones have this feature. It might consume slightly more storage space.
Method 2: Utilizing WhatsApp Business
If one of your accounts is primarily for business purposes, consider using WhatsApp Business. This is an official WhatsApp app designed for businesses, offering features like automated messages, quick replies, and business catalogs. It’s a great way to keep your professional and personal chats separate.
Setting Up WhatsApp Business:
Download and Install: Download WhatsApp Business from your phone’s app store (Google Play Store or Apple App Store).
Register with a Different Number: You’ll need a separate phone number to register for WhatsApp Business. This could be your business landline or a second mobile number.
Set Up Your Business Profile: Complete your business profile with details like your business name, address, and website.
Pros and Cons of Using WhatsApp Business:
Pros: Official WhatsApp app, designed for business use, offers useful business features, keeps personal and professional chats separate.
Cons: Requires a separate phone number. Might not be suitable if both accounts are personal.
Method 3: Employing Third-Party Apps (Proceed with Caution!)
Several third-party apps claim to allow you to run multiple WhatsApp accounts on one phone. However, exercise extreme caution when using these apps. Many are unreliable, may contain malware, or violate WhatsApp’s terms of service, potentially leading to account suspension or even data loss. Always research the app thoroughly before installing it. Read reviews carefully and check the developer’s reputation.
Risks Associated with Third-Party Apps:
Malware: These apps can contain malicious software that steals your data or compromises your phone’s security.
Account Suspension: WhatsApp actively combats the use of unauthorized apps, and using them can result in your account being banned.
Data Loss: Unreliable apps can corrupt your data or cause unexpected errors.
Alternatives to Third-Party Apps:
Instead of risking your data and account security with untrusted apps, consider the safer and more reliable methods discussed above: using your phone’s built-in dual app feature or WhatsApp Business.
Method 4: Using an Emulator (Advanced Users Only)
For advanced users comfortable with technical setups, Android emulators like Bluestacks or NoxPlayer can be used. These programs create a virtual Android environment on your phone, allowing you to install and run a second instance of WhatsApp. However, this method is complex, resource-intensive, and may not be suitable for all users. It also requires a good understanding of your phone’s capabilities and potential risks.
Setting Up WhatsApp on an Emulator:
Download and Install an Emulator: Download and install a reputable Android emulator on your phone.
Install WhatsApp within the Emulator: Once the emulator is running, download and install WhatsApp within the virtual Android environment.
Register with a Different Number: Register your second WhatsApp account using a different phone number.
Pros and Cons of Using Emulators:
Pros: Allows running multiple WhatsApp accounts.
Cons: Complex setup, resource-intensive, potential compatibility issues, security risks if not using a reputable emulator.
Choosing the Right Method for You
The best method for running two WhatsApp accounts on your phone depends on your specific needs and phone capabilities. If your phone supports dual apps, that’s the easiest and safest option. If you have a business account, WhatsApp Business is a perfect solution. Avoid third-party apps unless you’re absolutely certain of their safety and reliability. Emulators are only recommended for tech-savvy users who understand the associated risks.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Dual App Not Available: If your phone doesn’t have a built-in dual app feature, consider using WhatsApp Business or explore other options.
Account Issues: If you encounter problems with either account, check your internet connection and ensure you’re using the correct phone numbers.
App Crashes: If a third-party app crashes frequently, uninstall it immediately.
Summary: Mastering Your WhatsApp Multitasking
Using two WhatsApp accounts on one phone is achievable! We’ve explored several methods, from the simple built-in dual app feature to the more advanced emulator approach. Remember to prioritize safety and reliability. Using your phone’s built-in features or WhatsApp Business is the safest and most recommended approach. Avoid unreliable third-party apps to protect your data and account security. Choose the method that best suits your technical skills and needs, and enjoy the convenience of managing your WhatsApp communications efficiently!
Now it’s your turn! Which method are you going to try? Share your experiences and any questions you have in the comments below. And don’t forget to share this guide with your friends who might also benefit from it!

WhatsApp to Stop Working on These Android Phones from January 1
Tumblr media
As one of the most widely used messaging apps worldwide, WhatsApp consistently updates its software to introduce new features and enhance security. However, this means that older devices with outdated operating systems may no longer be able to support the latest version of the app. Starting January 1, WhatsApp will officially stop working on a range of Android smartphones, affecting users who rely on older devices.
If you're one of those users, you may be wondering if your phone will be on the list. To help you prepare, we've compiled a list of Android smartphones that will lose access to WhatsApp after the new year. If your device is on the list, it’s time to consider upgrading to a newer model to continue using WhatsApp without interruption.
Which Android Smartphones Will Lose WhatsApp Support?
WhatsApp’s decision to drop support for certain devices is based on the operating systems that power them. The app requires newer Android versions to ensure it can run smoothly and securely. Specifically, Android phones running versions older than Android 5.0 Lollipop will no longer be able to use WhatsApp starting January 1.
Here are some of the most common devices that are likely to be affected:
Samsung Galaxy Devices
Samsung Galaxy S3 and earlier
Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and earlier
Samsung Galaxy Ace series
LG Smartphones
LG Optimus L3, L5, L7 series
LG Optimus G and earlier
Huawei Devices
Huawei Ascend series
Older Huawei Y series models
Sony Xperia Phones
Xperia T, TX, V series
Xperia S and earlier models
Motorola Phones
Motorola Moto E (1st Gen)
Motorola Moto G (1st Gen)
HTC Phones
HTC One series (older models)
HTC Desire series (older models)
Other Budget Brands
Numerous older budget brands and models, often running Android 4.4 KitKat or earlier
Why Is WhatsApp Dropping Support for These Phones?
WhatsApp’s decision to stop supporting older smartphones primarily comes down to the limitations of older operating systems. As Android versions evolve, they introduce new features, performance improvements, and enhanced security measures. Older versions of Android simply can't support these updates, which could leave users vulnerable to security risks. By dropping support for outdated phones, WhatsApp aims to ensure a more secure and efficient experience for its users.
What Are Your Options If Your Phone Is Affected?
If your Android device is listed among those that will no longer support WhatsApp, it’s important to consider your options:
Upgrade to a Newer Device: The best solution is to purchase a newer smartphone running at least Android 5.0 Lollipop. Many affordable models from brands like Xiaomi, Realme, and Motorola offer excellent value.
Use WhatsApp Web or Desktop: If you're not ready to upgrade your phone, you can still use WhatsApp on your computer through WhatsApp Web or the desktop app. However, this will require a compatible phone for initial setup and verification.
Alternative Messaging Apps: If upgrading your device is not an option, you may want to explore other messaging apps that support older Android versions, although this may mean losing access to your WhatsApp contacts.
Final Thoughts
If your smartphone is on the list of devices no longer supported by WhatsApp in 2024, it’s time to start thinking about the next steps. While it may seem inconvenient, this move ensures that WhatsApp users have a more secure, streamlined experience. So, check your phone’s Android version and see if it’s time for an upgrade before January 1. Stay connected and secure by ensuring your device is ready for the future of WhatsApp.

‘Capture the Real You’, a tagline synonymous with the brand. Oppo is a brand that prides itself on its cameras and markets them heavily.  As a matter of fact, the camera is marketed so heavily by the brand that it has had a good amount of success with people looking for a camera-centric smartphone. However, Oppo’s biggest competitor in the Indian scene is Xiaomi and its own sister brand Vivo, and they both have incredibly strong contenders across a range of price brackets. Oppo recently launched the F5 which is their brand new device keeping in line with the ideology of their previous devices.  It is a direct competitor to the Vivo V7+ and the Mi A1. Like all previous devices, it too is a camera-centric smartphone and is marketed as such. So how does the F5 differentiate itself from the competition? Let’s find out in this in-depth spec analysis. Design and Display Well to start, the Oppo F5 and the Vivo V7+ share identical body designs. They both have metal bodies and a big screen which incidentally happen of the same size more or less.  They are quite in terms of overall dimensions, too but the differentiating factor between the two is that the Oppo F5 has rounded edges in the corners of the display, more or less like the LG Q6. Also, another key differentiating factor is the shape of the fingerprint sensor which is a bit oval on the back of the Oppo and squared off at the back of the Vivo.  The fingerprint sensor is very fast and accurate. Other key differences include placement of cameras and the antenna lines on both the devices. Overall, the design is quite generic and doesn’t do much in the way to stand out. The Oppo F5 also comes with a 5.99 inch LTPS-LCD display with a 1080p+ resolution which basically is 1080x2160 pixels. It dictates to about 402ppi which is really sharp and is considerably higher than Vivo V7+’s screen which has a low resolution of just 720p on its panel.  The display too is one of the best that you would find in this price bracket and has nice colors and contrast. However, the display in the Huawei Honor 9i remains the leader in this price bracket. Performance Now, this is one area where both the Oppo F5 and the Vivo V7 Plus undercut heavily. We can’t really tell why but both of these manufacturers seem reluctant to use better chips on their devices.  Where the Vivo V7+ came with a Snapdragon 450 SoC, the Oppo comes with a MediaTekHelio P23 Octa Core SoC. It is made using the 16nm fabrication process which isn’t very efficient as the FinFet 14nm chips from Snapdragon but these cost low too.  Other than that, these are power hungry chips and although it is faster than the Snapdragon 450, it isn’t really as efficient. Also, the embedded Mali G71-MP2 dual-core graphics chip doesn’t help with gaming either. General day-to-day performance is fine but heavy gaming is off the list. It also has 4GB of included RAM which is quite standard for all devices across this price bracket. Software On the Software front, the Oppo F5 runs a heavily skinned version of Android called the Colour OS. It has Android 7.1.1 as its base, and the UI tries to mimic the UX of the iOS. This is a trend that really needs to stop because it’s just blatant copyright theft and points towards an inability to create a better UI on the company’s side.  In my opinion, Oppo should simply pay the royalty to Google and get stock android for its devices. But that aside, the color OS doesn’t have a lot of bloat for the Chinese version, and there are customisability options like applying custom themes and so on. Camera and Storage Now, this is the area which should, in theory, be the ultimate selling point for the F5 but I’ll argue otherwise, and this goes for the Vivo V7+ as well. The Oppo comes with a 16MP primary camera with a CMOS sensor and an f/1.8 aperture. It is accompanied by a single tone LED flash. The camera is fairly okay but cannot come near the performance of the Honor 9i.  The colors are good, and we get a revamped camera app that can control various aspects of the camera.
Also, the f/1.8 aperture enables a nice bokeh effect, but it isn’t as profound as the dedicated telephoto camera setup on the Honor 9i and the Mi A1. Coming to the front, we have a 20MP shooter with an f/2.0 aperture and a large 1/2.8 sensor to accommodate for the loss for the dual camera setup with the F3. The Front camera is also good and takes good pictures across a range of lighting conditions. However, the device has some glaring and serious flaws like no Image stabilization of any sort, no 4K video recording (courtesy of the Helio P23) and no dual tonne LED flash. Storage wise, the device comes with 32 and 64 GB variants with the ability to expand it further to 256GB via an SD card. Battery and Connectivity The Oppo F5 gets a 3200mAh battery which is almost similar to the Vivo V7 plus. There is no fast charging support so charging up that battery might prove to be a lengthy process. Connectivity wise, the Oppo F5 has already launched in India, and so it supports Indian network bands including 4G VOLTE. It also features Wi-Fi a/b/g/n 5GHz, Bluetooth v4.2, micro USB 2.0 (no USB type-C) and GPS with A-GPS. Conclusion It’s hard, to sum up, the Oppo F5. The biggest problem with this and the Vivo V5 plus is that both of them don’t feel special in any regard. Also, advertising the camera to cover up the Phone’s apparent lack of proper hardware is simply misleading.  Also, the omissions like no USB Type-C connector, No image stabilization, and lack of fast charging doesn’t supplement the phone in the least in this price bracket. The Oppo F5 price in India is approximately Rs.19,000-22,000of which there are a lot of other alternatives that you can check out. For more in-depth reviews,

The Latest Smartphone Craze: Is It Time to Upgrade?
As the annual smartphone release season unfolds, tech giants are eager to entice consumers with the latest and greatest gadgets. This year, Google has introduced its Pixel 9, Apple has unveiled the iPhone 16, and Samsung recently launched its Z Flip6 and Z Fold6 foldable devices. Huawei has also entered the foldable market with its innovative Mate XT, which features a tri-fold design.
Tumblr media
Despite the buzz surrounding these new releases, smartphone sales are experiencing a global slowdown. The marketing campaigns accompanying these launches are becoming increasingly extravagant, with promises of transformative technology. Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, claimed that the iPhone 16 would “redefine what a smartphone would do,” while Google’s Brian Rakowski extolled the “stunning” design of the Pixel 9—a device that still resembles a basic black rectangle.
A significant trend this year is the integration of AI features in both Apple and Google’s latest offerings. Google's new Magic Editor allows users to manipulate photos with AI-generated content, while Apple has incorporated OpenAI’s technology into Siri, aiming to modernize its digital assistant.
However, the question remains: do consumers truly desire these features? Ben Wood, a mobile industry expert at CCS Insight, points out that while these advancements aim to enhance user experience, they don’t top most people’s wish lists. “People know what they want, and for many, a good camera is paramount,” he notes. Despite improvements in camera technology with each new release, this alone isn’t enough to drive sales, as consumers are increasingly holding onto their devices for longer periods. In fact, sales have plummeted from 30 million units annually in 2013 to an expected 13.5 million this year.
The ongoing cost-of-living crisis also plays a significant role in consumer spending habits, alongside rising concerns about the environmental impact of smartphone production. Additionally, a growing number of parents and young people are opting to step back from smartphone use altogether. Some UK schools are even reassessing their smartphone policies, with a few implementing outright bans. Eton College, for instance, has issued feature phones to its new pupils, a move that has sparked debate among parents and educators alike.
Advocates for a smartphone-free childhood argue for the necessity of delaying children’s exposure to these devices. Nova East, who leads the Smartphone Free Childhood campaign in North and West London, emphasizes that the goal is not to shun technology but to foster healthier childhood experiences. “We want tech companies to create child-friendly phones with essential features only,” she explains.
Dr. Sasha Luccioni, a research scientist at Hugging Face, highlights the contradiction in the tech industry’s direction. “There’s increasing discourse around ‘digital sobriety,’ yet smartphone manufacturers seem to be moving in the opposite direction,” she remarks.
In response to these sentiments, Samsung emphasized user choice, stating that their devices come with features that allow individuals to customize their smartphone usage according to their needs. HMD, the Finnish company behind Nokia, appears to be heeding the call for simpler devices, launching a Barbie-themed feature phone that prioritizes functionality over app-laden features.
While feature phone sales remain low compared to smartphones, CCS Insight predicts about 400,000 units will be sold in the UK this year—indicative of a niche market gaining traction.
As many of us grapple with our own screen time—averaging around five hours a day, as I recently discovered—there’s a growing acknowledgment of the multifaceted role smartphones play in our lives. They serve as essential tools for banking, navigation, health tracking, and staying connected with loved ones. “Smartphones provide numerous benefits,” says Pete Etchells, a professor of psychology. “They are technologies of convenience that enhance our lives.”
As the latest smartphone models hit the market, the challenge for consumers is to discern what truly adds value to their lives amidst the glitz and glamour of new features. In an era where holding onto our devices longer is becoming the norm, it’s worth asking: what’s the point of buying the latest smartphone?
