Howlin’ Rays, 800 S Arroyo Pkwy, Pasadena, CA 91105
Tumblr media
Good fried chicken seems to make people very chatty. The customers at Howlin’ Rays like to talk to each other. The cashier doesn’t just take your order, he engages you in a conversation. When they call your number and you pick up your food, Mario talks to you too. The wait staff checked in on me FIVE times. Several employees introduced themselves. Wow, kinda exhausting if you’re anti-social like I am. But I have to say, the service is amazing.
The place has a club like vibe with rap music playing (you can hear it from the outside) and if you’re a customer, you’re treated like a club member. The food is wonderful. Portions are generous. Top notch all around. It’s a real experience. The line moves slow because of all the conversations that occur. I waited in line for 35 minutes. The line wasn’t long but it takes each person/party about 2 minutes to order. Once I placed my order, I waited 10 minutes for my order. They’ll call your number over a loudspeaker when your order is ready.
The menu is short – fried chicken (quarter bird, half bird, tenders, wings), the fried chicken sando, sides, extras, wine, beer, and canned beverages. On weekends they have chicken & waffles. The heat level ranges from country to Howlin’. Don’t get the Howlin’ – it’s painfully hot to the point where it’s no longer enjoyable or tasty. It gave me heartburn and I almost never get heartburn. And I love extra spicy food.
X-hot tenders ($12), 3 jumbo tenders served over a slice of white bread with pickles. I didn’t see the word jumbo. Biggest tenders I’ve ever seen. I ate one and took the rest home. The batter was thin and slightly crunchy. X-hot is very spicy. If you’re getting the Sando, X-hot is fine because the other ingredients tone down the heat. If you’re getting the tenders, I recommend toning it down to hot because the spices are intense. They’ll make your mouth tingle. The chicken was tender but it was harder to enjoy because the spices were so intense – and I love spicy food.
Shake fries ($4): long, crispy, hot crinkle fries with an addictive blend of spices. So good. Could make a meal of these. Love dipping them in comeback sauce (like Thousand Island, a sweet, tangy, creamy sauce)
Vinegar slaw: I didn’t order this but they gave me some for free because they’re generous like that. The cabbage slaw was quite sweet but I think the point is to eat it with the spicy chicken.
It’s not a place to go for a quick lunch. The wait to place an order is usually longer than 30 minutes.
Howlin’ Rays Adidas shoes just came out – for hardcore Howlin’ fans.
4.5 out of 5 stars

Howard Mandel (Editor): Jazz & Blues Encyclopedia (2019)
I bought this Jazz & Blues Encyclopedia at Nashville's National Museum of African American Music, and it's as entertaining and educational as a visit to this incredible museum, should you find yourself in Music City.
Decade by decade, throughout the 20th Century and into the 21st, this comprehensive survey provides detailed descriptions of the music’s evolution in both technical and artistic terms, while putting everything into clear historical and social context.
And it ain't just jazz and blues in the strictest definition, but every possible branch in their family trees, leading into countless other styles of American music, such as R&B, Soul, Funk, Gospel, Doo Wop, and, of course, Rock 'n' Roll and Hip Hop.
Each decade also gets a dedicated description of relevant events, deep dives into a handful of key artists, and capsule biographies of dozens more, both familiar and obscure (depending upon the reader, of course), along with their most important works.
All the while, this incredible trove of invaluable information is presented with a fair, authoritative, scholarly tone, reminiscent of the very best PBS documentaries -- at once dispassionate and oh-so-passionate -- about these timeless artists and their music.
Needless to say, this encyclopedia is highly recommended to find a shelf in every home -- not least as a handy reference book.
Featured Records:
Bessie Smith: The World’s Greatest Blues Singer (1970)

Song Review: Little Feat - “You’ll be Mine”
Percussionist Sam Clayton is the lead singer on Little Feat’s next LP, its first in more than a decade and the band’s first to include guitarist Scott Sharrard and drummer Tony Leone.
Recorded at Sam Phillips’ Memphis studios, Sam’s Place (May 17) is a blues covers album with one original track.
Feat previewed the LP with “You’ll be Mine,” the Willie Dixon composition recorded by Howlin’ Wolf, Stevie Ray Vaughan and others. It’s a high-test arrangement accentuated with brass, Sharrard’s slide and Bill Payne’s piano with Clayton’s half-spoken growl at the forefront.
Wolf, Vaughan and others did it better. And while Clayton singing is OK on a tune here and there - think Down on the Farm’s “Feel the Groove” - “You’ll be Mine” raises the question of how he can possibly carry a nine-cut LP.
Grade card: Little Feat - “You’ll be Mine” - C-

TGAMM Observations, Theories, Headcanons Pre Season 2
Long post!
1.      Scratch never tells Molly his name in episode one (there’s a theory on this that his name was divulged to her as part of the curse, since it also gave her the ability to summon him with his name)
2.      In ‘The (Un)natural’, Bartholomew can be seen writing in a cutaway scene, a diary entry saying “Dear diary, I had the strangest dream last night”
3.      In the same cutaway scene, we can see the McGees moved into the house June 2
4.      Other entries in Scratch’s scare report read:
·        06/01 Pizza Steve (I get him every time!)
·        06/08 Kid with Umbrella (Transformed into umbrella. Classic Rainy Day scare)
·        06/15 Wilderscouts (Used Howlin’ Harriet story to scare campers)
5.      In the beginning of Howlin’ Harriet, there’s a brief moment where Scratch puts his hand to his chin, deep in thought. Geoff notices and, a beat later, copies the position
6.      Weird amount of Canada references. Cousin Carl from Canada, Cousin Milly from Canada, in The Lucky Penny there’s a crashed car with a Canadian sticker on the window. When Molly is looking up a Bat Mitzvah there’s a recommended video about ghost hauntings in Toronto (it has four views and was posted eight years ago). The very last moving box in Out of House And Home has a shipping sticker that says Toronto. I’d be tempted to say that’s the last place the McGees moved from if not for Molly knowing nothing of Canada. The syrup bottle in Citizen McGee has a maple leaf on it. I’d be offended at the stereotypes if I weren’t so jazzed for the representation
7.      Despite claiming to be touch adverse, Scratch can be seen instigating physical contact even as soon as First Day Frights, where he puts his arm around Molly and pokes her nose. The touching gets more affectionate as the season goes on, but even at the end of Friend-Off (where he’s arguably ‘known’ Libby less than two days and has been fighting with her for most of that time) he initiates and seems comfortable with friendly contact
8.      Scratch first admits he may be ‘McGee adjacent’ in The Greatest Concert Ever, but (as far as I know) there isn’t a solid moment where he embraces the McGee name fully. It just kinda pops up later on
9.      Scratch is already calling Nin ‘Grandma Nin’ by the end of The Curse (which isn’t groundbreaking, I just think it’s a cute detail that he already calls her grandma)
10.   In The Best Of Nin-tentions he also calls Sharon ‘mom’, but I’m not sure whether that’s because he just does now, or because he was using Molly’s words
11.   The gravestones in Andrea’s film set in Hooray for Mollywood read ‘Howlin’ Harriet’, ‘Howlin’ Harriet’s Toes’, and ‘SK’. I wonder if the last one might be Scratch’s, but that’s just a theory seeing as how we don’t know his surname
12.   Scratch was alive sometime before the invention of the internet (a safe assumption) and after the invention of colour tv. Possibly died in the 70s-80s era?
13.   If the Ghost World doesn’t get anything until after it’s dead, how come they have mochas? Or clubs? Also Scratch is shown with a smartphone at least once in Scarin’ is Carin’
14.   Scratch may also have some variation of size-manipulation power, seeing as there’s a functional pizza box with a to-scale pizza laying around his dollhouse. Maybe it’s just a way he creatively uses curses idk
15.   The. The medical bill in Out Of House And Home guys. It’s just. Look at it. Friggin. Z Ray (x2). Minus $0.49 for insurance. The epitome of America’s medical system. Would be funny if it weren’t so true
16.   Also, hard to see the date on there, but I think it’s 05/14/21 if you’re looking for a timeline. Seeing as we’ve had a Christmas episode, this would probably mean the McGees moved in June 2, 2020
17.   Historically, the larger Scratch gets, the less stable his form is. Might just be for scary effect, but might also be a mass-displacement or concentration thing
18.   But he has no trouble maintaining consistency when he shrinks, so maybe all ghosts just have a maximum comfortable size
19.   Some aspects of transformation appear to be instinctive and subconscious, linked to a ghost’s moods, instead of all shape changes being intentional (most clearly seen in The (Un)natural)
20.   The repossession notice in Out Of House And Home is in Sharon’s name, and I admittedly don’t know a lot about mortgages, but does that mean the house is in her name? Isn’t Pete the primary breadwinner in the beginning of the show?
21.   The McGees have a ricecooker in their kitchen! I thought that was a cool detail
22.   The home purchase agreement is a little hard to read in Home is Where the Haunt Is, but it says “I, [blank], agree to buy the property at [address, I can’t read it] even if it is [a tiny bit haunted]. This contract is legally binding and Candace Green cannot be liable for anything”. Candace absolutely knew about Scratch before he revealed himself
23.   Molly has type A blood, but whether it’s negative or positive isn’t specified (hello, blood poisoning). Also, flyers in the background promote Debate club, which implies she’d donating at school. As USA blood donation requires most donors to be a minimum of 16 years old (with parental consent) or 110 lbs, we can conclude that the school is illegally harvesting blood from the student body
24.   Why do they… why do they draw Scratch’s butt like that
25.   Libby’s left handed!
26.   The cart stunt at the beginning of No Good Deed is referenced in Darryl’s file as ‘Incident 314’
27.   Scratch doesn’t cast a shadow
28.   I don’t know why, but there’s a red sticker that shows up in the school a lot, especially around the lockers, and it just says ‘Souffle’
29.   Apparently Scratch has shared custody of Molly’s phone
30.   Who did the subtitles on DisneyPlus I just wanna talk
Feel free to add on/expand/debate if you feel the desire! I’m mostly just putting these here so they’ll stop swimming around in my head

One thing both Caz and Taylor had in common: their love for fried chicken. Taylor liked to take advantage every chance she had when Eric wasn't around. Not that she didn't miss him every waking moment, but she was happy that he was surrounded by a family that she trusted and his best friends. And this meant she got to be a normal human, who hung out with friends during the weekend. Caz was one of the only people who matched her energy, which she was extremely grateful for. She grabbed their food when one of the cashiers said it was ready, and took it outside where Caz was waiting for them. Taylor figured it would be better to eat outside because the both of them could get loud, and she didn't want to disrupt anyone's calm lunch. "Holy. Fuck," Taylor groaned, setting the food down. She looked at the chicken like it was the love of her life. "I eat this shit at least twice a week but I feel like I'm salivating. Jesus Christ. Get in my belly!" Taylor slipped into a chair, and then stuffed her face with a piece of fried chicken. With food still in her mouth, she looked at Caz: "What were we talking about again?"

Hey Di, if you want the best spicy chicken, I heard Howlin Ray’s, a L.A local, has the best and spiciest chicken sandwiches, and also Wendy’s, globally
Diane: 🤤 Yum... I gotta look into that.
Webs: See's Diane drooling. And that's all of us with no self-control when it comes to our favorite foods. 😑

Belle and Sebastian - If You're Feeling Sinister
The production and instrumentation of 60s pop rock meets the dispassionate ennui that only the 90s could provide. Belle and Sebastian list lazily through dreamy songs that you could easily mistake for pure twee. A closer inspection reveals fairly biting lyricism though. Basically the missing link between 90s alternative and 00s indi rock.
Tumblr media
Miranda Lambert - The Weight of These Wings
Oh God not billboard country. This album tricked me by having a promising start but quickly showed it's true colors. Too sleek production and a completely artificial sense of down home good ol natural country good girl bullshit. Every aspect of this album is paint by the numbers and perfectly concocted by some fucks in an office somewhere to appeal to middle class right wingers without being overt in it's messaging. But make no mistake a desire to go back to the good ol days and live a simple life that city folk (read: non white people) wouldn't understand is right there front and center. The cherry on top is that the album is too damn long. Even if it didn't make my skin crawl it's too boring to want to finish.
Tumblr media
Selena - Amor Prohibido
A solid latin pop album. Top 500 material? I'm not so sure. It's nice but very middle of the road to me. Idk I don't dislike it but like, I've kinda got nothing for this one. She has a very nice voice. I wish it didn't have a 24 minute credits track.
Tumblr media
The Kinks - Something Else by The Kinks
The era from '66 to '70 was marked by a series of five consecutive masterpieces by iconic mod rockers The Kinks. Something Else is in my opinion the weakest of them, but only because of the heights other albums from this period reach. Ray Davies dry wit is still on full display. This album may in fact be the place where the line between Davies' pity and disdain for the British middle class is the thinnest. And their dedication to never breaking the facade of being proper British boys making upbeat little ditties for the kids is admirable.
Tumblr media
Howlin' Wolf - Howlin' in the Moonlight
He had a voice like gravel and his guitar sounded like a buzzsaw. In the world of electric blues Howlin' Wolf is the go to. He took on the legacy of his predecessors and perfected it. This album is a compilation of his first singles for chess records and it is a genuine historic piece of music that must be heard to understand the evolution of blues and rock music.
