Who is Hédi Fried ?

Hedi Fried was born in Sighet in 1924. When the deportation of Hungarian Jews began in 1944, she and her family were sent on one of the first trains. 19-year-old Hedi and her 5-year-old sister Livia were taken from their parents and detained in Auschwitz-Birkenau. A few days later, the parents were killed. A few weeks later the sisters were taken to a labor camp in Hamburg, where they were made to work in inhumane conditions, including shoveling snow while wearing clothes once worn by gassed Jewish women.
