I couldn’t sleep so have some Emet ficness I spewed out while trying to make myself tired lmfao

Kinda like if the same thing happened to the WoL as Y'stola did (She goes Wheeee into the stream~) - how Emet would possibly react v: I dont normally write so please forgive any errors @v@ ... I also probably have an odd writing style, but I hope it's enjoyed. I probably also shouldn't have to mention to please not post this anywhere else without my permission ;v;

------- He tried to ignore the familiar colored soul drifting through the stream. It couldn’t have been you. You- the hero of Eorzea and the East. You- who had fell countless enemies- primals- near gods. Nay, that couldn’t be you.

And even if it was you, shouldn’t this make him happy? The Champion of Eorzea no longer a threat to his plans for the rejoining. He should be happy.

Then why did he feel such… a loss? Anxiety? Pulling at his chest?

He turned his slumped back away from the stream, your soul gently drifting through it.

The next few days were torture for him. Any attempt to banish the thought of the familiar soul from his mind failed. He found himself nibbling- biting- at the seams of his glove as he stared at nothing.

Surly that wasn’t you.

To prove it to himself- he paid visit to those who glared at him. Your friends and the Crystal Exarch- although the words he caught before they realized he had arrived caused no relief from the anxiety pooling in his chest.

You were missing. And had been missing for a few days. It was unlike you to leave without a word to at least one of them.

Putting on his usual airs, he played it off fairly well, hiding his concern and taunting the others. Oh what would they do without you?

He smirked as the Exarch tried to hide his clenched jaw in the shadows of his hood- obviously feeling worried and guilty if you had actually met your end here in the First. Guilt that he called you here just to meet your end.

With a huff and one last taunt, he waved to the now agitated group as he vanished, but he wasn’t just going back to his recreated home. No, he found himself slumped, standing where he first had seen your soul adrift, eyes scanning. Eventually they did land on that beautiful color, and slowly reached his hand out.

Should he do this? You would get in his way again. You would cause trouble and problems… but soon those thoughts got shoved to the back of his mind… and he snapped.

You had to be as careless as that Miqo'te. Or maybe just somehow lucky. Your body and self were pulled from the stream as easily as picking a flower and gently floated before him.

It was now that he hesitated- eyes landing on a spot normally covered by your armor… a birthmark that he long recognized.

Out of all the thousands of years and many more heartbreaks- nothing could have prepared him for the cruel reality that you were in fact… his dear Azem.

He clenched his teeth and tore his eyes away from your form- snapping once again to give you decency. He then paused, not trusting himself to hold you.

Could he let you go if he did?

His hands shaking, he reached out and took your limp form in his arms, holding the majority of you to his chest as he let out a shaky breath. You were not whole. Sundered. Ugly.

He kept telling himself this but the gentle breaths you took against him, and your peaceful face had his thought spinning.

Until your eyes cracked open barely, trying to focus on the face the warm embrace that held you belong to. His eyes were focused on you- preparing another taunt- about how the great hero-

Your lips cracked and moved, and he thought his heart would stop the moment he saw his true name form soundless on your lips.

The name you had called him countless times before- back when the world was right and unsundered.

Hades

His words caught in his throat and before he could react-- respond- you had passed out once more.

He stood there for a long while- holding your body gently- mind whirling. No. It wasn’t possible you remembered. He did not see correctly.

He clenched his jaw again as he opened a portal and stepped through- entering the room at the Pendants. This is where you stayed wasn’t it?

He gently laid you down and stared for a moment longer before pulling himself away and vanishing, shoulders slumped even more than they have been. A memory weighing heavier than usual.

You awoke quite some time later, confused to how you were in your room. Did one of your friends find you and bring you back? You would have to ask later. It only added to the confusion when you did see them again- and none of them had brought you back- nor knew you were in your room- not even the roomkeep.

A hazy memory was there but it was out of reach- like a dream slipping away.

And then it vanished.

Livestream began twelve minutes ago.

"Oh? Shit, is that V? What's up, buddy- welcome back."

You're so perfect. Near a quarter of an hour late, and you still grace them with a greeting. They knew you weren't like the others they wasted their time on. No, you're kind. Inviting. God they loved you so much.

V stumbled across your channel on night during a drunken relapse into pouring their hours into viewing the lives of random strangers online. It was all they had to do after work with none of the potential partners they messaged ever responding to their texts or calls. Their lost.

You were in the beginning period of streaming with only ten followers to your name; majority likely close friends and family. V planned on giving "light" critic of your performance, but something about the brightness in your eyes as they joined the stream sobered them up and glued them to their seat completely.

"Hi, welcome. Your name is actually too long to fix on the screen. Is it cool if I just call you V?"

And they were hooked on you ever since.

Little by little, your fanbase grew to the comfortable size it was today; your first real viewer front and center for each recording. Despite the boost in popularity, you never forgot those who gave it to you in the first place. V likes to think they're the most valued member with their donations and the equipment they sent once they had convinced you to open a p.o box. Shame they never pin pointed the location before you announced your move and had it closed.

"Since you're here. I can try on that jacket you sent me before I finish packing. It's so cute."

V wipes specks of drool off their screen as you sort through a cardboard box and slip the coat on. You were wearing something they touched. Fuck, you're so cute they could just devour you alive. With no roomates, they could get away with licking their phone unlike last time, but they refrained from said temptation for now. Cat ears sprout atop your head as you pull the hoodie on. You rub your shoulders as the jacket's interior snuggles your frame.

"Whoa, much warmer than I expected. I might wear it during my flight."

You better. Since you forced the thought into their head, if they see you with anything else in your photos they might blow a gasket. Just imagining random commentors wondering where you got the coat and you answering with a nod at their existence gave V the ego boost of a lifetime.

"It's getting kinda late. We'll do some more chatting then I gotta bounce for the night."

V watches the rest of your stream with the loudest voice of the crowd. They wait until it ends to begin their nightly routine of screenshotting their favorite moments of the stream. The highlight was a frame of you posing like a cat following another's chatters request. Having so many pests ruined some of their enjoyment, but times like this they'd let slide. For now.

V sits alone at the bus stop the following day. The prized picture taken previously was now their lockscreen photo. The fifth change in the last two days. A creature like you was bound to have unworthy trash throwing themselves at your feet daily, but they knew that with your history it would only take one hello for you to fall as madly in love with them as they were you. You're different like that. If only they could meet you.

V is pulled from their moment of bliss by a tap on their shoulder; scowl ready for whoever dragged them from heaven - until they see whose standing in front of them.

"Hi, I hope I'm not bothering you, but do you know if this bus goes to this street? My taxi didn't drive out that far apparently...."

The stranger blinks, cat ears shifting.

"Sorry- have we met before? You seem familiar. "

Yoosung Kim First Date Headcanons 

Oh, he is so nervous. He’s never been on a date before, so cutscene to him asking Zen and Seven what he should do: with Zen suggesting that he should be as suave as possible, presenting you with bouquets and chocolates and Seven telling the boy that he should only speak backwards to prove that he was cool. Definitely not trying to just make him look like an idiot.

He’s a poor student, so your first date would be somewhere relatively cheap, most likely the cinema and then go get some food afterwards! Yoosung would believe he had to be chivalrous and let you pick the movie and where you wanted to eat, and would try to pay for your ticket and food since he’s the one who asked you out.

He’ll be internally panicking the entire time in the cinema, wondering whether he was allowed to wrap his arm around you or touch your hand. He really wanted to, but he didn’t want you to think he was moving too fast. So, when you lean your head on his shoulder he swears his heart stops. He won’t move a single muscle for the rest of the movie because he doesn’t want to disturb you. 

He’ll try to work up the courage to hold your hand on the walk home and he’ll actually manage it when you’re about two minutes away from where you live. It’s the thought that counts.

Zen/Hyun Ryu First Date Headcanons

On the outside, Zen’s cool and collected. He knows how to flirt and how to look good whilst doing it. He’s had a girlfriend before but that was a while ago, so he would be ever so slightly worried that perhaps he’ll be a little rusty. He spends extra long looking himself over in the mirror making sure that he looks his absolute best before he comes to meet you.

Your date would be an evening in the bar, sharing a couple of drinks and getting to be more comfortable in one another’s presence. Zen’s usually flirty, but he’s even more so after he’s had a couple of beers. He’ll be throwing compliments and winks at you like there’s no tomorrow: but that’s okay because you’re definitely enjoying the attention. 

You’ll talk about everything under the sun, the RFA, his work, your hobbies, how much he hates Jumin, how weird funny Seven is.

Zen will make sure you’re into it before he touches you, but he’ll be quick to wrap his arm around your waist or lightly touch your hand, using his finger tips to trace around the inside of your wrist. He won’t admit it, but seeing you so happy for his affection and even reciprocating it flusters him a little because it’s so genuine and sweet. 

Zen insists on walking you home, especially because it’s late and he wants to personally make sure you get home safe. He’ll swap between holding your hand and holding you by the waist as you walk, and will kiss your cheek before you go into your house. He doesn’t want to push his luck or overstep any boundaries, he’s a gentleman afterall, but he’s very pleasantly surprise when you pull him in for another kiss on the lips.

Jaehee Kang First Date Headcanons 

Jaehee’s also rather nervous before the first date, but tries her best to keep calm. She figures that you wouldn’t have agreed to the date if you didn’t already like her, but she’ll still doubt herself in that you should be with someone more interesting and less plain.

She’ll invite you to a lunch date at her favourite coffee shop, and will enthusiastically explain all the different types of coffee beans and processes to you. Your heart flutters at the sparkle in her eye and she apologises for getting too excited, please reassure her that you love listening to what she has to say. 

When you both order and sit down, Jaehee gives you the Zen DVDs she offered to lend you, and the two of you talk about the different musicals and extra behind the scenes, and Zen, and you promise to guard these DVDs with your life. 

You listen as she slightly vents about Jumin, which is very understandable and you console her for having to catsit Elizabeth the 3rd once again. Jaehee gets a little bit flustered when you read across the table to hold her hand, but her gentle smile indicates that she’s enjoying the affection.

When it’s time for you to part, after Jaehee got another coffee to go whilst muttering that she just got another two emails from Jumin, Jaehee’s a little hesitant on the appropriate goodbye, she isn’t quite sure what to do since it was only a first date. The two of you hug, and she’’’ be so worried you’ll feel how much her heart is racing.

Jumin Han First Date Headcanons

Pulls out all the stops. You continuously assure him that he doesn’t need to and that you’re on the date to spend time with him, not his money. And whilst he understands that, he wants to treat you to a pleasant first date that you won’t forget and just believes that it should be standard to treat his partner.

He’ll have Driver Kim pick you up and bring you to Jumin’s favourite restaurant, where he’s (Jaehee) made reservations for the two of you. It’ll be an evening meal, shared over a bottle of horrifically expensive wine.

He’ll show you another one of his beautifully captured blurry images of Elizabeth the 3rd. He’ll even offer to show you the livestream he has on his phone, showing you watch Elizabeth was currently curled up asleep on the sofa.

He’s more interested in hearing about you than talking about himself. Jumin doesn’t mean to worry you with his forwardness. He’s very intent on being nothing like his father in terms of dating, and wants you to know that he doesn’t go into anything half-hearted, his lovelife included. 

You offer to pay your share, but Jumin declines. He insists that he was raised to pay for his partner’s meal, but he appreciates the sentiment that you were not depending on him to cover your bill, even though he always intended to do so anyway. 

You’ll share Driver Kim’s car on the way back, with Jumin taking your hand and kissing it as you left the car, telling you that he had a wonderful time and hoped that you did too, a small smile present on his face. 

Saeyoung Choi First Date Headcanons

Seven is very stressed. Firstly, he can’t believe that he even asked you on a date, let alone the fact that you said yes. Who would want to date someone like him? He’s a mess. But regardless, he’s getting himself all worked up and it’s only a slap in the back of the head from Vanderwood that sorts him out. 

Your first date would be to an arcade during the evening. You let Seven pick the date, and you laughed when you heard what he had chosen. It was so him: fun, childish, a bit chaotic. 

He’s very good on the claw machines, and will make a point of winning you any stuffed animal you want. He’ll also just win any particularly cursed plushies that he sees. This means that you’ll end up with an entire bag of cute stuffed animals, a minion, a bootleg Shrek, a fish with no eyes and a random sock that somehow made it’s way in. 

As a joke, you bring the bootleg Shrek up to your lips and kiss it before pressing it against Seven’s lips to also kiss the stuffed toy. His heart is racing and he sends a flustered, very speedy message of ‘ASDFGWESHARED AN INDRECT KIS WITH SHREK!!!’ to Vanderwood, and completely received an ‘I don’t care’ in reply. 

The two of you take a selfie to send to the chatroom, and Seven’s heart is fluttering so fast, you’re so close to him and oh god he can even smell your perfume and it’s so nice and- Snap. You took the picture, and laughed at how Seven wasn’t even looking at the camera in the photograph, he was glancing at at you with the softest expression on his face. He’s so embarrassed.

You get a ride home in one of his babies, and once you collect all of your stuffed toys out of the backseat, you root around in the back and give Seven the bootleg Shrek you both kissed. He wishes you a goodnight and turns to turn the radio on after you get out the car. He wasn’t looking at you, so his heart was not prepared for when you planted a kiss on his cheek before promptly running back into your home. Oh. He’s fallen, hard.

Saeran Choi First Date Headcanons

Saeran had never been on a date before, he’d never even had anyone romantically interested in him or been romantically interested in anyone before he met you. There was no way he was going to ask his idiot brother for advice, even though Seven was quite literally begging him to do so. He’d relented to the extent of briefly looking it up online, but nothing seemed quite right. 

He’d settle on a picnic and a walk around the park, since it was simple and sweet. He was a little nervous, so hoped that the flowers and sky would calm him down and he’d be able to talk to you about any flowers that the two of you found. 

He’d make the picnic food all on his own (letting his brother eat any of the scraps from the preparation) after asking what your favourite foods were. He’s so happy to see you enjoying what he made, it fills him with a warmth he still cannot quite pinpoint, but he knows he wants to feel it again and again. 

He’d take your hand in his as you walked around the park, where he could point out the different flowers and tell you their meaning, and how pretty they would look braided into your hair. When the two of you see an ice-cream van, he immediately suggests going over to buy some, and your heart clenches at the sheer childlike joy at getting to eat it. It’s so sweet and tender to watch. 

He swears he can see a poof of red hair every now and then from behind a tree, or in the reflection of a shop. Surely not. He must be imagining things. He had better just be imagining it. 

V/Jihyun Kim First Date Headcanons

V isn’t particularly picky when it comes to dates, as long as it’s doing something that you would enjoy. If you left it down to him, which you did this time since it was your first date and he was the one that asked you out, it would be spending time together at his house over a bottle of wine. He’s not as formal as Jumin, so he doesn’t mind you coming over straight away. V’s not expecting you to spend the time, so he’s already arranged for one of Jumin’s drivers to come and pick you up afterwards, as a personal favour to Jumin. 

Genuinely, V just wants to know more about you. He’ll ask you about your likes and interests, what you hate, how you love, what your world views are, how you see yourself and what art means to you. He’s not a particularly great cook, but he’ll make dinner for the two of you and pour you a glass to go with it. 

He doesn’t regard himself as an interesting enough person to warrant your attention, but he’ll answer almost any question you ask him about himself. He’s trying to be a more open and honest person, especially to you. Whilst there are some things he’s tentative to talk about, he’ll freely share his world and artistic views with you.

V will show you some of his photographs, and more intimately his paintings, in his studio and let you see his workspace. He’ll show you around his private collections and, if you’re comfortable with it, will ask to take pictures of you since there’s not enough time to paint you- although he definitely mentions wanting to do that at a later date too.

a/n | i finally did it! i wrote a thing without angst! i have grown so much as a person. anyway this is my third and final (☹️) submission for @hollandsrecs​ 1k bingo event, crossing off the “accidental relationship reveal” trope square. this has been a super fun challenge and everything i’ve written for it i’ve actually been v proud of so thank you all for the continued support :)

“Babe, have you seen my shirt?”

A strong pair of arms snake around your waist.

“Why do you need a shirt?”

You slip around and lace your fingers behind your boyfriend’s neck, blushing at his sly smile.

“As flattered as I am, I don’t think my publicist will be very pleased seeing pictures in the papers tomorrow of me walking around naked.”

He ran his hands up and down your bare back and leaned in to kiss your neck, making you shiver in the best way.

“Ooh, I would buy the hell out of those photos.”

“You’re such a weirdo, Tom.”

“You love it.”

“Maybe. Where is my shirt?!”

“Just borrow one of mine,” he said, going to his closet and pulling one of his favorite spider-man t-shirts from the back. You draped it over you and reveled in being enveloped in his scent while Tom frowned at the loose cotton now hanging over you.

You walked over to him sitting on the edge of his bed and straddled his hips, lazily putting your arms on either one of his shoulders. The smell of your perfume mixed with his laundry detergent blissfully dizzied him, and he couldn’t stop thinking about how the only thing between your bare bodies was a thin piece of fabric- but his pout stayed put.

You noticed the drop in his mood. “What, I don’t look good in gray?”

“You look amazing in it, darling. I just wish you didn’t have to leave,” he exaggerated his expression, toying with the bottom hem of the shirt, exposing a few inches of your bare belly. You kissed his nose and pushed him back on the mattress, leaning over and propping yourself up on your hands. His eyes continued to roll over you, the sunshine filtering in through the slats in his blinds casting a glowing sheen across you that he couldn’t peel his eyes away from.

“I’ll be back later,” you said, dragging one finger slowly down his chest. “And you can take it off again then.” You finished your sentence with a smirk and a boop to the nose, got up, and went to finish getting dressed. Tom stayed there with his jaw slacked, cursing his better judgement for not tackling you and using his charm to convince you to stay.

“Oh, you better believe I’ll be doing a lot more than that,” he huffed, swallowing hard, trying to figure out what the hell he was going to do with himself until he could get his hands on you later.

“...and this is the room where it happens!” you pan your camera around your bedroom to show all of the fans who were watching your live story. You had promised them a tour of your new apartment once it was all moved into, and with a fan base as big as you had, you couldn’t disappoint, even if you would’ve much preferred being tangled up with Tom right now than showing millions of strangers your throw pillows. But your relationship was to be kept completely off the books, out of the media and only inside the comfort of your own homes, with the exception of your close friends. You both knew what kind of drama it would spark if you went public this soon after your movie release, and wanted to live in your little private bubble of normalcy as long as you could. When you expose your love to the world, things just get messy- and right now, you were content with everything being divinely simple.

Feedback poured in onto your tiny screen.

You scrolled through the comments on your live-stream, laughing and responding to some questions people asked.

“Yes, my dog lives here with me!”

“Ohmygod, no, Chris Evans does not live in my basement! Did he tell you that?!”

You floated from room to room giving the tour, and eventually made your way to your impeccably organized closet, opening the doors and flipping your camera to show the live audience the inside. And right there, sticking out like a sore thumb on top of your white dresser, was one neatly folded gray spider-man shirt- normally spotted on Mr. Tom Holland. It was unmistakeable. The comments started flooding in before you could even turn the closet light off.

“wait a second- is that TOM’S SHIRT?!”

“omgomgomg-“

“yoooo i knew it, y/n and tom 😍😍”

“wtf?!? are they DATING???”

You realized what you’d just done a second too late, immediately came up with an excuse as to why you had to close the tour, and ended the livestream, heart beating out of your chest. Not even a minute later, you got a call from Tom; you almost threw your phone across the room.

“...Hello?”

“Hey, hi, y/n, uh, what did you just do?”

“Tom, I swear I didn’t mean to-“

“Baby, it’s alright. Just…what- what happened?”

“They saw. They saw it. All of them. Your stupid shirt. On my stupid fucking dresser. I’m so sorry, how do they even know what all of your shirts look like, that’s so fucking weird-“

Your mouth couldn’t keep up with your brain you were so flustered, and all you heard on the other end of the line was Tom chuckling softly, which only confused you even more.

“Are you- are you laughing? Because I’m having a heart attack,” you half-muttered, sitting down with your heavy head in your hands. It was pounding with panic and confusion and couldn’t hold itself upright any longer.

“Take a breath, y/n. The world isn’t ending-”

“Yes it is!” you teared up, feeling your phone buzzing out of control in your palm.

“Baby, no it’s not. Stay there and I’ll be over in 5.” Tom hung up the phone and you went to check your texts, every app under the sun pouring in with notifications of screenshots and callouts about what you had just revealed. When Tom finally knocked on your front door, you basically fell apart in his arms before he made it past the threshold.

“Tom, I’m freaking out, everyone is saying we’re-” he cut you off with an unexpectedly sweet kiss, this proving to be the only thing that could get you to stop panic-rambling. Your eyes fluttered shut against your mind’s wishes to keep pumping with adrenaline.

“Yes, darling, most people are speculating all over the internet that we’re an item because they saw your livestream,” he said, walking you to your couch and sitting down, guiding you to sit on his lap. “You have a much bigger following than I thought.” he grinned at you, but all you could do was frown back.

“Oh, god. I ruined everything.”

“No, you didn’t. It was about time people started knowing I was off the market,” Tom said, running a soothing hand through your hair as you continued to pout at him. 

“...Really?”

“Yes! I mean, it’s just cruel that I’ve had all this to myself-”—he gave your body a once-over—“and couldn’t show it off, y’know.”

That got you to crack a small smile, and Tom capitalized on that moment and pushed you down onto the couch to hover over you, peppering you with obnoxious kisses. Admittedly, he’d made a valiant effort to distract you, but you playfully swatted at him to get off because you were nowhere near done being dramatic about this. 

“Okay, so wait, you’re — Tom, stop that — you’re not upset?” You found your previous spot etched into his lap and settled back down, interlocking your hands and playing with his slender fingers.

“Actually, no, I’m not,” he said, shrugging his shoulders nonchalantly. “Thought I would be, but, honestly? It feels good, love. I don’t have to hide you anymore. I never wanted to in the first place.”

You gave him an audible awww and snuggled into his chest, wrapping your arms around him and trying your best to squeeze him until he popped. “I’m sorry it couldn’t happen on your own terms, though, it was just a dumb mistake,” you sighed into his shirt.

“Are you kidding? The fans are eating this up. They’re dubbing it ‘shirtgate’,” he laughed and shrugged again, “I don’t even know what that means.”

You giggled into his chest and brought your face back up to his, kissing his forehead, then nose, then lips. You went for a deeper kiss the second time, but he interrupted you.

“Although, I did tell you y’should’ve just stayed shirtless.”

You feigned offense at what he said and instinctively covered your chest by crossing your arms over one another.

“Well good luck getting me shirtless now, Holland.”

“Excuse me?!”

“What a horrible time to prove a point!”

You both laughed as he tried to wrestle your arms apart, but they didn’t budge. You gave an impressive fight, but Tom got the better of you, and ended up throwing you over his shoulder from the couch and carrying you upside-down into your bedroom. You seized your opportunity and pinched two handfuls of his butt, chuckling.

“Hey, I like the view.”

“Did you just grab my ass?!”

He dropped you down onto your bed and walked away, coming back in with his gray shirt and throwing it at you.

“Put it on, babe.”

You obliged all while staring at him puzzled as he twiddled away on his phone. Once you were dressed, he sat down next to you, put his phone up to face you both, and turned on his instagram live.

“Tom! What are you-” you gasped but had to stop speaking as thousands of people were already tuning into his stream.

“Hey, everybody! Me and y/n here. We know there has been some buzz going around about this shirt,“ he pointed to you and you smiled awkwardly. “and wanted to set the record straight.” Tom put his arm around your shoulders and you were suddenly in the foreground of the screen.

“Yes, it is mine. And she does look amazing in gray, doesn’t she?” you started to giggle and blush incessantly as he kissed your cheek, gave a casual wave goodbye, and shut off his phone.

“Uh, what did you just do?”

Encounter (Mc x Veronica)

Summary: Veronica goes out for drinks one night and finds herself in a situation where she needs saving. Good thing Bea exists right?

This fic was highly inspired by my boo @fundamentalromantic. Thank you so much for the idea and I hope you enjoy it.

 A day before moving into Belvoire, Veronica decided she should get a feel of the area. New York was far different from the usual quietness of her small hometown in California. But on the bright side, the vlogger would get a ton of content for her Youtube channel in the buzzing city where people never sleep. The first few days of exploring involved bar hopping and recruiting Chloe to help her film in Soho and Chinatown for beauty week. Poppy took part in Veronica’s tour as well, and on Thursday the girls decided to check out the newest night club that opened up.

 Veronica stepped out of the car in a sparkly thigh-length dress with a slit, and black Louboutin heels. It definitely caught the attention of people standing outside the club, a few guys even attempting to approach her in their drunken state. Chloe basked in the attention, flirting with a blonde-haired guy who was clearly overdressed (in her eyes). Poppy dragged Chloe with her and the three girls walked swiftly past the long line of people and up to the bouncer. It didn’t take much effort to have him open the door for them, being as they were the three hottest people on the block, but Veronica also did have a killer reputation at just about any place she stepped foot in.

 An hour into partying and Veronica held her phone up as her livestream watched them all do a round of colorful tequila shots. The vlogger definitely felt the warm buzz of booze swimming through her veins as her muscles started to relax. New York was the place to be right now and more eventful than all of the years she lived in Cali. Veronica was excited to continue her career and studies in a place like this, but her peaceful thoughts are quickly cut off when someone approaches her, the smell of cheap alcohol invading her senses.

 “What’s a tigress like you doing in a raunchy place like this baby?” Veronica rolled her eyes at the hideous effort of flirting by a man who reeked of “just got divorced and into younger women”. His friends (who were probably part of the same club) seemed to laugh around him, encouraging the unwanted behavior. She shook her head and turned away from him in her chair. Don’t let some idiots ruin your night V, have some fun.

 She immediately stiffened when he wrapped his arms around her from behind, the wet feeling of his alcohol soaked beard grazing against her cheek. Veronica  jerked up abruptly, shoving the man away from her and placing her arms up in defense. “Get the fuck off of me.” 

 At this point people started to stare at them, Poppy and Chloe already standing by the Zeta’s side with anger. Veronica had left her phone on the table but the stream kept going, capturing the voices of patrons in the bar getting increasingly louder. The bearded man watched her with a predatory look on his face, well aware of the crowd that was forming around them. He grunted and turned away after realizing he probably couldn’t take on three women at once, atleast not in the way he imagined. Chloe scoffs loudly, crossing her arms, “What’s wrong? Don’t tell me you’re scared of us. Pathetic piece of garbage.” 

 Yeah....bad idea Chlo.

 When he whipped around to face them, Veronica finally noticed just how large his muscles were, and how they were straining against his shirt. Oh shit. 

 “What did you say to me bitch?”

 Veronica shot a nasty glare at Chloe before facing the stranger once again, her arms slightly trembling. “Look, let's just forget all of this and move on with our night. Don't mind my friend...she’s just..” Veronica leans closer, mocking a whisper, “it’s that time of the month.” The guys laughed at her comment and she silently breathed a sigh of relief, hoping this would make them back off. The last thing Veronica needed was to get her ass handed to her on live, with thousands of people watching. Poppy stood there eyeing the men, her hand already on the tip of her phone, ready to speed dial her dad, or the cops...or her therapist if things went awry. 

 Chloe sneered at Veronica, her awful balance making her stumble as she stepped closer to the men. She clearly had too much to drink. “Oh please, I’m not sorry for anything that comes out of my mouth, even if it includes vomit!” She points a finger in their direction, “give me your best you motherfuc- mmh!”

 Poppy clamps one hand straight onto the blonde’s mouth before she can spit out any more profanity. Her face a mixture of annoyance and fear as the men start to lose their smiles. Veronica can see the bearded man getting ready to lunge at her and her flight or fight instincts seemed to kick in at the last second. She dodged the hand that tried to grab her, but he caught her leg as he was spent sprawling down on the ground from something behind. She yelped and kicked free of his hold before catching the gaze of a woman who stood a few feet away from her. Their eye contact was immediately broken as the stranger glared down at the man, “hands off the lady.”

 Two men from the group with buzzcuts tried to grab hold of the brunette’s arms but she spins easily and kicks one right in between the legs, making him fall in pain. The other guy tried to knock her down from behind but she locked his arm in an odd and excruciating position, “do you really want to do this?” His persistence led her to pull on his elbow, eliciting a scream from the man until he surrendered and scurried away, along with the rest of their crew.

 The brunette swiftly kicks the bearded man in the abdomen after seeing him trying to get up, “stay down you asshole.” 

 She wipes a trickle of sweat from her forehead and huffs out, “I’ve wrestled pigs bigger than these guys, but damn that was a workout.” Unbeknownst to the woman, it was all caught on tape and would be everywhere, including Belvoire’s hottest gossip blog the T. But she doesn’t have to worry about that because she doesn’t go there, right?

 Veronica gapes at the girl who single handedly became her hero, in tight leather pants. The curly-haired woman noticed the speechless expression on her face and smirked. “Well if I were you guys, I’d leave this place before the cops miraculously show up.”

 “Somebody should call the police! These- these bimbos tried to kill us-”

 Chloe earns another hand on her mouth as Poppy starts to push her towards the exit, “Oh yeah the only bimbo here is YOU, go and sit in the car before you end up in a jail cell.” 

 Veronica turns away from the chaotic scene and notices that the brunette has gotten closer to her. She can feel her throat starting to heat up, and it was enough to take her mind off what just happened. The Zeta girl tries to take a step and immediately feels her heel slip sideways, but the woman captures her hands and steadies her before she can fall. “Woah- careful there. Maybe we should walk outside? This club is starting to get crowded.” 

 They step around the man sprawled out on the floor. Yeah someone will probably come get him, no worries. Veronica lets her lead the way until they both step out to the curb. The brunette helps her sit down on the edge of the sidewalk before taking a seat next to her. “You know, I can’t keep living life without knowing the name of my savior.” 

 The mystery girl barks out a laugh as she siddles closer to her. She holds out her hand, hoping that Veronica would grab it, “Bea, Bea Hughes. And you?”

 Veronica stares at her wide-eyed, a not so sarcastic gasp escaping her lips, “You-you don’t know who I am?”

 “...Should I?”

 Bea scrunches her eyebrows in confusion before snapping her fingers, “Oh wait! You’re a Kardashian..!” That earns her a hard smack to her leg but she can only laugh teasingly. 

 “I think that was the most disrespectful thing someone has ever said to me....You’re very lucky you’re cute. Oh and it's Veronica.”

 Bea bites her lip shyly, “You’re too beautiful to be one of them...Veronica. And you definitely look all real to me.”

 “Okay if you’re trying to seduce me, this is NOT the way to go Hughes.”

 They both bust out laughing and Veronica wraps her arm around Bea’s, letting herself sink into her side. “Thank you by the way...I mean, not like I couldn’t handle it myself.” She shrugs and looks down at their entangled arms, squeezing tighter, “I owe you one.”

 “You don’t owe me a damn thing Veronica. I’m just grateful I was there as well. This ain’t the first time those goons have harassed women in the area.”

 “Judging by that southern accent and fighting skills, I’m guessing you’re not from here?”

 Bea smiles down at Veronica, studying her bright hazel eyes and luscious lashes. “No I am not, but….if you want to know more about me, how about over a drink? If you want to.” 

 The Zeta girl laughs softly, nudging her, “Oh so you do know how to flirt Hughes. Let's do it! But um..it might be a little difficult to do that because my heel is broken.”

 Bea peers down at her stilettos which seemed to be way past 7 lives now and smiles to herself. In one swift motion she scoops Veronica up in her arms bridal style. The vlogger gasps in surprise before wrapping her arms around the brunette’s neck. “Our problem seems to have disappeared already. And you are incredibly light like a feather.” Bea teases the Zeta, lifting her in an up and down motion.

 “That’s because I’m 40% alcohol right now, but do keep me in your arms, perfectly convenient for me.”

 “You mean I get to carry a stunning woman in my arms free of charge? This must be heaven..”

 “Okay Ms. Flirt, keep walking I’ll direct you where to go.”

 Bea fought the urge to tease her about trying to be dominant but the voices of Poppy and Chloe caught their attention. She approached the car where Chloe sat…wailing hysterically..?

 “I don’t want to go to prison! Don’t let them take me Poppy please!” The blonde grabs Poppy’s dress and doesn’t let go, desperately looking around. When Bea finally stops in front of them, Poppy looks over at the two women and rolls her eyes, clearly fed up.

 “Poppy what the hell is happening with Chlo?!” Veronica breathes out, even though this is the last place she wants to be.

 “Chloe thinks I called the cops on her and she said she doesn't want to sleep on a concrete bed with two other women in a prison cell.”

 Bea raises an eyebrow as she watches the two Zeta girls stare at each other like they’re used to what was happening right now. Veronica gives Poppy a stern look, essentially telling her “leave me alone, I’m trying to get laid”, and the strawberry blonde catches on quickly. She turns away, sighing heavily, “Go, I’ll deal with this. But be at the house tomorrow, it's our first day back.”

 The Zeta grins and blows her a kiss, signaling for Bea to carry on down the sidewalk as she lays in her arms barefoot. Poppy watches them walk away and roll her eyes.

 “So, should I ask?”

 “I think you would appreciate it if I didn’t tell you.”

 The brunette laughs easily, crossing the now empty street. The more she walked the direction that Veronica guided her to, the more quieter it got. “Um… V. Where exactly are we going..?”

 “You’ll see. It’s a secret spot. Kind of like a speakeasy, except it’ll just be the two of us and we can do whatever we want.” Veronica flips her hair seductively, catching Bea’s gaze as she bites her lips and winks. The brunette can feel her heart starting to beat faster, her breath hitching in her throat. She barely can move her gaze off of Veronica’s hazel orbs, her cheeks reddening at the girl’s shameless comment. 

 Lucky for Bea (or maybe not), their night was just getting started, and Veronica would have her blushing again, but this time on her knees.

 Veronica saunters confidently into the gates of Belvoire on move-in day, watching as others run around campus with luggages and bags. She sips on the iced latte in her land, eyes glued to her phone on the other hand. She eventually finds Chloe yelling at some assistant girl and immediately turns around, not wanting to deal with it. A woman with a suitcase and a grey Henley shirt approaches the blonde, reprimanding her for her rude behavior. The video of the fight last night appears on the T just as Veronica looks at her phone again. Bea’s leather jacket appears on-screen and knocks the man down. Veronica smirks as she watches the woman take on 3 men effortlessly. People around start to point at the brunette while looking at their phones, and Veronica doesn’t look up until two voices that appear to be arguing, get louder. She nearly drops the cup of coffee in her hands when she sees the same face that was between her legs the previous night. 

 And as Poppy approaches Bea, the brunette catches a glimpse of familiar hazel eyes and ombre colored hair and her eyes go wide. “...Veronica..?” Oh shit.

Guiding Light turns two years old today!

It’s crazy to think this all began only a couple of years back... and also hilarious it falls on the same day as “International Mystery Dungeon Day” over on Twitter. More after the cut. This is gonna be a long one, so I appreciate anyone willing to read this. ^^

For a long time, I had been a casual consumer of fan fics. It started in the late 2000s when I was in a Spyro craze thanks to the more story-driven Legend of Spyro trilogy. I had an itch that I needed scratched and FFN fulfilled that to some extent. I also looked at some Mario fics, including Paper Mario: The Temple of the Sun, which I greatly enjoyed and thought did a good job adapting the formula that made Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door so beloved and putting a unique spin on things.

But it was until the early 2010s that I actually started getting back into Pokémon games with Gen V. After Emerald, I fell out of touch with Pokémon for a time. When Gen VI came around, I dipped my toe into the fandom through Twitch livestreams, but also through reading a few anime-based fics that are very long and still going, even now. 

At the same time, I ended up buying PMD: Explorers of Sky... and damaged my cartridge before I could properly finish the game with my Vulpix/Riolu team. So, I watched cutscenes for what I missed on YouTube, then got Gates to Infinity and, later, Super Mystery Dungeon and had fun with both of them... though more for the stories and characters than the actual gameplay. Truth be told, I don’t care much for roguelikes at all.

It was during the gap in time between Super’s release and the first official footage of Sun & Moon in mid-2016 that I found myself hit with a recurring thought: “What if someone made a PMD story where the hero and the partner are forced to fight one another with the fate of the world at stake?” I wound up (loosely) brainstorming an idea for a PMD story revolving around an antagonistic Hoopa character who would use its ring portals to collect entire communities, including the Pokémon living in them... all so that he would never be bored. This would lead him to “collect” the partner to add to his “toys,” so when the hero shows up, he’d sic the partner on them.

But that was as far as I got with the idea. I ended up graduating college and took a job with late evening hours. It left me pretty tired and exhausted and unmotivated to do much of anything. I withdrew from the parts of the Pokémon community I was involved in.

Then the Generation VII games came out and, while divisive in the fandom, I found myself really liking some of the concepts. There were so many times when I thought, “Gee, I wonder what this would be like if it were in a PMD game?” For example, one of the ideas I had was a sort of edgy rival rescue team akin to Gladion, which would have a Midnight Lycanroc, a Zoroark, and a Type: Null character in it.

So, toward the end of 2016 and early 2017, I started creating an idea for a Choose Your Own Adventure story with the intent of putting it on this really small forum I was a part of. It would be a Gen VII-themed PMD story, but because I didn’t think that sounded interesting enough, I decided that, not only would the human keep their memories, but they would be from the real world and be a major Pokémon nerd. The idea was that the choices the readers made would affect the relationship between the human and partner. I even came up with a point system. The more points the readers earned for their choices, the “closer” the relationship the hero and partner would have and the happier an ending the story would get. If the hero and partner couldn’t stand each other, one of them would likely end up working with the bad guy and winning. If they became steadfast friends, they’d work together to save the world.

Unfortunately, the forum shut down before I got too far into planning it, so I shelved the idea and continued focusing on my job. And things stayed that way for several months, until I ended up getting into med school and scrambling to move.

During the downtime I had when I wasn’t doing moving related stuff, I decided to look at FFN again and found Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Defenders of Warmth. I wound up reading through the entirety of the story quite quickly. I guess you could say it sparked something in my head. The fic itself focuses on what, at the time, was the newest Gen (Gen V). It also has multiple humans and is set on a continent separate from the canon locations (which were just the Air and Grass Continents, since Gates and Super didn’t exist when the fic was written). In short, it renewed my desire to pursue my idea of a Gen VII-flavored PMD story.

So, I set about creating my story outline. It is so... so much different from the actual story, though I’ve gone into that in previous posts (search for #amby answers). Originally, I used Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time as the framework for the fic: an alien invasion in a colorful, comedic world. I took more specific cues, too. Zero was meant to be a (mostly) silent antagonist a la Princess Shroob, for example.

The problem was, I really didn’t have much confidence in myself or my abilities. I’d like to say I was writing for myself, but I really did want validation, too. I think any author is lying to themselves if they say they don’t feel this way at some point. Because of this, I figured if I put the fic on FFN, it would get ignored. The site’s huge! There were, at the time, around 85k fics in the Pokémon section alone. (That number’s since gone up to over 90k!)

Given I had experience with forums, I decided to post it to Serebii, because the fic community seemed much smaller and more open to giving feedback to one another. In an effort to try and, y’know, establish some connections, I actually read other pieces and reviewed them before posting any stories. This also helped me build up a backlog of chapters and prove to myself I enjoyed writing this enough to keep going.

When I finally did post the fic, it was a bumpy start, for sure. I do think I made a lot of mistakes out of the gate, including uploading chapters way too quickly for readers on Serebii to (reasonably) try to keep pace. That probably cost me a few potential readers... or made them silent readers who I never ended up hearing from. Which is why I’m especially thankful to @girl-like-substance (who I can seem to tag, drat) for all of the well-thought-out feedback given throughout the fic’s run. I don’t think I would’ve made such significant strides in my writing otherwise... and there are plenty of long-running fics where the quality tends to stagnate.

In any case... it was thanks to a request from @deliriousabsol to put the fic somewhere more mobile-friendly that I chose to mirror Guiding Light on FFN starting in October 2017. I would’ve kept going on Serebii had she not asked so nicely, so she’s the one you can thank for it showing up there! (She’s a fellow author who does cyberpunk-themed fics and art and her characters have cameoed in the fic.)

And, honestly, I’m just... beyond shocked at what wound up happening to the fic once it hit FFN. Well, actually, for the first several months I was lucky if I even got a comment when I put up a chapter. I’m not sure any of the people who first commented on FFN still follow the fic anymore. I haven’t seen/heard from them at all, so I assumed they moved on with their lives.

In any case, around March of 2018, the word count on FFN passed 300k and... somehow, the fic starting getting more attention. Like, a lot more attention. This was... not really something I was even remotely prepared for.

(Yes, this means there’s gonna be a giveaway. More on that later.) I never would’ve thought I’d reach a number like this. I never imagined I’d meet another PMD author who’d be willing to do a fun collab (thanks @virgil134, Spiteful Murkrow, and Namohysip). I really did not imagine that I’d ever get fanart of characters that I wrote (huge thanks @thebreak-ofdawn, @ask-nicky-and-others, and @cresselia92). I mean, above everything, I not expect the fic or characters to resonate with anybody the way it wound up.

A part of me feels like I don’t really deserve it. I’ve made a lot of serious gaffes with writing this. When initial Serebii feedback had people intrigued by Shane’s jerkass attitude (when I didn’t actually intend for him to come off as a jerk), I dialed things up in the hopes I’d keep their attention. It probably cost me readers. Then there’s the slow pacing of the early episodes and the mistake of making Special Episode 3 as long as it was... which my speaks to my (bad) tendency to give into some of my strongest impulses even though I had an outline I was trying to stick to.

And, I mean, there’s also some of the “shamlessly shameful” stuff I’ve done with the fic. I’m not fooling myself. Guiding Light has grown progressively more furry and, uh, probably fanservicey, too. All the big furbait (and some scalebait) ‘mons are accounted for. There’s a lot more sexual humor when I initially promised myself I would stay away from romance and keep everything platonic. I practically turned Xerneas into waifu bait, if some of these asks are anything to go by. This blog certainly didn’t help in that regard. Maybe I’m just being my usual nervous self? 

I am worried that this fic’s performance has, somehow, affected my thoughts and behavior. There are very popular fic authors who let their popularity get to their head... or chose to open up Patreons (something that makes me uncomfortable) or start doing things like taking commissions for written pieces, which is understandable... though I think it’s an easy way to lose your passion for writing. I guess some of that worry stems from a debacle I learned about on a Discord server I’m in, but that’s not something I’m comfortable discussing publicly. 

And I haven’t even talked much about the blog itself. Like, it somehow passed 100 followers? Where? When? How? I don’t actually draw stuff like many other Pokéasks. And, like, for a lot of folks, I have no idea if they’ve actually read the fic or just check in on the blog. It’s the same with the fic, I suppose. If you’re a silent reader/follower, I would really love to hear from you! I promise... I don’t bite or anything. I’d love to know what (if anything) you’re thinking. 2018 FAVORITE LIVE PERFORMANCES OF THE YEAR: DAVID ARCHULETA EDITION

So at the end of every year I like to go back and revisit what David got up to that year. Sometimes the year has been so hellishly long that I can’t even remember that there was a whole other tour back at the start! hahahaha. I’m looking at you, 2018. But seriously. This was an amazing year to be a David fan. He gave us so much goodness. Music videos, albums, tours, oh my! I did a thread on twitter a couple days ago listing my top 15 David instastory vids of the year. All that random singing and dancing that we know and love from David. Not that I don’t adore fan vids but we all know the audio limitation.

Listening to David talk at the beginning and his earnest discussion of being in an abusive situation and finding forgiveness, for yourself and for the perpetrator. David’s obviously emotions here are almost more than I can handle. He is just so genuinely good. AND WE HAVEN’T EVEN GOT TO THE SONG YET. And that’s just transcendent. His voice soars and he embodies the song. The break in his voice at the feels. I just. I can’t recommend this enough but only if your heart is feeling strong.

Sheer auditory nirvana. David singing Spanish and slaying the vocals like a madman. I was not familiar with this song before (I’m so sorry, Selena, it’s gorgeous!) but I sure am now. I’ve watched this video so many times. This is vocal mastery. I know I’m bombastic but really. Really really. So good. The vibrato, the soaring notes, the tone, the soft notes, the control, the everysinglefreakingthing. Once again, check out the guitarist the end. Clap freaking clap. Yes sir. (Honestly I think the entire top 3 should be tied for number 1.)

David singing with a symphony!!!! Bias alert: I was at this show. And I took this video but I’m only using mine because I can’t find another one lol. This arrangement of Numb caught me so off guard! Confession time, Numb is not necessarily my favorite live song. I don’t even know why because I love the song itself but it’s just not one that normally really stands out to me. But this. This just changes the entire game. The epic sound of the roll of drums. The claps and voices from the choir. The way David’s voice pierces through it all. I am in awe of this arrangement and performance. It’s so major.

I will never get over my obsession with this performance. I’ve posted about it here before but I can’t emphasize enough how next level brilliant I think this is. For one thing, David once again defies expectations. He wasn’t even the main headliner at this show. Colbie Caillat was. But David just blew the roof off with this performance. He got em. He. Got. Em. You can actually hear him picking up the crowd and their amazement and appreciation the further the song goes. The timing, the build up, the occasional shining brilliant note teased early and then streamrolling you into that unparalleled ending. I don’t know that I’ve ever been more moved, impressed, flabbergasted, slain, enamored, or angry at any live David performance ever. I’m angry he’s so good. Each note has purpose. Even the lyric flub. It actually made it better because he hit that high note instead. Each movement of his body has purpose. Each head bob, each hand flair. Each stompy step. And that voice. That unreal voice. I could watch this every day for the rest of my life and never be any less impressed or mesmerized than the first time I saw it. Someone commented about David that the thing that impressed them the most was that he has so much trust in his voice. He just belts out and trusts his voice will do everything that he asks of it...and it does. David Archuleta, you are a musical beast. Thank you for existing.

Trolling and Social media conflict

When social media has become part of our daily necessity, things can become nasty. From our understanding, many cases such as trolling and verbal abuse from the users have make their appearance one after another on the posts or comments where the victimizer find them amusing. These have resulted badly in a serious matter where the victim could no longer endure all the trolling, ultimately ended their own life. With that said, we are going review the chanciness of trolling on social media and ways to prevent.

Why trolling? And the impact?

According to Hanson (2018), the term trolling is defined as writing some off- topic messages where they lead to the quarrels or upsetting people. Meaning to say, it was caused by someone who wrote about unrelated massage to purposely brings up the controversial into the massage itself to get a rise out of other users. However, victimizer who thought of immediately criticized the comment of the victim will also unintentionally brought forth the negative impact to it. On July 2018, a man name Leon Jenkins 43, livestreamed his own suicide on an internet forum because of some vicious trolling that caused the depression on him from the online community (Synnott, Tzani-Pepelasi & loannou, 2018). Nevertheless, is it possible for the victims to turn a blind eye to all the vicious trolling and resolve the problem eventually? According to Johnson (2017), Ms. Gee Bee, which was one of the victims of trolling, tackled the attackers head on where she reached out to her community of online bloggers. They successfully identified and arrested the man who was responsible for all the trolling. From what Ms. Gee Bee had done, we can see how she did not give in herself to all the trolling. Instead, she stood up and confronted the man directly.

How to deal with the trolling?

When trolls on social media were getting worse and worse, there are some ways to deal with the trolling and they could be very subjective from each person. To do that, one should establish a policy to show what kind of comments can be post (Rampton, 2015). Also, users could just ignore the trolls because all the trolls want were the attention. According to Pew Research Center, most opted option was to ignore online harassment which 60% of users were able to do so (Rampton, 2015). Last but not the least, take time to process with the emotions. Trolls can easily let up the flare that contains within the victim because trolling is literally a disturbing insult which will stir up the emotions of victim. Hence, the victim should sort out their emotion by crying or shouting so they could let them out of their minds (Ellice, 2017). If victims can effectively utilize the good ways to deal with trolls, I believe trolling issue would not lead to a very disastrous outcome. Meanwhile, victimizer should also understand what kind of trolling would not triggered some serious issues, so they could moderate it and prevent the trolling issues from getting worse and out of control.

hello my dude. i am aware u sent this in over a week ago and i’ve been meaning to answer but fact is, i’d started writing abt those songs in my journal and never finished. so i got around to finishing writing that, and i will now transcribe it (with additional comments) for ur enjoyment. im so glad u asked me tho thank u ily.

1 - (Fuck A) Silver Lining

honestly, this one threw me tf off when i first heard it. no pretty introduction, this song goes straight to mf third base. grew on me though. back then i didn’t know this song was the first one off the tracklist (duh), and that makes the “to the old and to the new, we dedicate this song to you” at the beginning even more meaningful. this album, to me, is both past, present and future, with the acknowledgement of the past being v important to me bc it had never really happened before. as b said in a livestream, this record is “very honest in a way he hasn’t been”, and i think it translates. 6/10

2 - Say Amen (Saturday Night)

bold to put two bracketed songs in #1 and #2, brendon. bold move. i immediately liked this one more, when both were dropped at the same time. kenny and nicole’s (and dan’s!!) vocals are forever ingrained in my mind bc of that bbcr1 live lounge. i can’t wait to hear that high note live. ball kickin’ good. 7.5/10

3 - Hey Look Ma, I Made It

this song makes me so proud of how far he’s come. something about the melody, i think. “If you don’t know who you can trust, then trust me you’ll be lonely” is such a great line. strength in vulnerability, in the willingness to rely on others. i like it. also, i couldn’t believe the “boo-hoo” was an actual line when i first listened to it. people have mentioned how they disliked the bit when dillon comes in, but i think it adds an interesting twist. granted, the song could’ve done without, but it adds a more “modern” dimension to the song that symbolises his life rn, yknow? first the little kid w the cardboard guitar in front of the mirror, and now the grown man in front of thousands of people. idk. 7.5/10

4 - High Hopes

was pretty meh about this song ‘til i heard brendon perform it acoustically on the release stream, and then on that sirius xm live sesh? i think. felt like it all made sense then, the original, emotional meaning of this song came through the guitar strings. the cocky lyrics became hopeful prayers. this song is so much better stripped down, both instrumentally and emotionally. been trying to cover it (in vain so far. i’ll get there one day.) studio - 6/10 // acoustic/live sesh - 8/10

5 - Roaring 20s

man, this one’s the one that finally let me let out the breath i’d been holding for the first four songs. the one that almost made me cry of relief, because i always get so goddamn anxious when one of my favourite artists release music. roaring 20s, man. it has all the extravagance of being a young adult with the refinement of being in ur early 30s. the hook, the chorus. anD THE BRIDGE?? this song could be on a fuckin movie. also, the line “roll me like a blunt cause i wanna go home” is So Fucking Iconic, but can almost make me emo at the end when he says “i wanna go home”? how does he do it. and, like i said.

6 - Dancing’s Not A Crime

started writing this when the song wasn’t on yet and wrote “one of the ones i like less out of the non-single tracks.” well, safe to say i was Wrong. amazing beat, great brass in the background, and a tinge of nostalgia for some reason. i feel like panic tends to do that easily. happy music with a dash of “fuck, those were good times after all.” or maybe it’s just me. panic makes me feel nostalgic. it is known. for some reason, i love the line “I’m like MJ up in the clouds.” also “And if you’re night crawlin’ with him // I won’t take it lying down” KDFJHKSLJFHS 8/10

7 - One Of The Drunks

god, i love this song. the opening “welcome to the club” is so friendly, like it’s a Cool thing but u realise throughout the song that the club aint fun at all. that, followed by brendon’s solemn tone, the softness in his voice, you can almost picture his eyebrows lifting as he croons or smth. the “uncomfortably numb” will always make me feel some kinda way, i think. 9/10 bonus .5 for “i saw you lift that fuckin sax up to the microphone, and i fell in love”

8 - The Ryd Overpass

fuck, this one almost made me cry, for all the reasons you’d expect. the “someone still loves you” hit me so, so hard. he says it so cockily but it’s such a vulnerable confession? the entire vibe of the song, man. smugness mixed with longing, this shared complicity of a secret rendez-vous. everything in this screams ryden. the parallels, the little references. the slurred bridge, as though he’s drunk. “everything about you is perfect” hHHHHHHHH 10/10

9 - King Of The Clouds

eh. still not crazy about this one. this is the one single fucker that made me doubt the entire album days before the release (hence the almost-relief cry) it feels unfinished somehow, lacks drums & bass. i did think it felt rushed, and then brendon revealed that it almost didn’t make the album. to me, it shows. it’s his favourite, though. probably for a reason. 4/10

10 - Old Fashioned

if you ever wondered what a keysmash irl looks like, look no further. here is a very good specimen of me losing my shit. this entire song is just. reminiscing. seventeen years old. how it was great. swallowin’ and shit. hm yes. like i said up there, 10/10

11 - Dying In LA

this track was so perfect exactly where it was. bless brendon for liking slow tracks at the end. this song was catharsis, was release from all the emotions from the rest of the album, it was so perfect. the line “every face along the boulevard is a dreamer just like you” hit me right in the chest because it’s so true. this song is about someone whose dreams didn’t come true and it hurts me so much. the birds at the end made me cry the first time i heard the song because they kinda snapped me out of the trance i was in. goddamn. i can’t rate this one. heart out of ten.

Sitting up in your bed, you stared at the window, not sure of how to react to seeing Spider-Man’s masked face through the glass.  Throwing back your covers, you quietly walked over to the window, grabbing a hoodie that Peter had lent you as you passed your desk.  Sliding the glass panel up, you climbed out onto the metal fire escape, slipping on and zipping up Peter’s hoodie to protect you from the cold.

The superhero stood where he had first stood, the night he saved your life and blew up Vizzini’s all those months ago.  And there, to his right, were the flower pots that he had tripped over the first time he came back for you.  Those stairs were where you would sit and draw while he watched your fingers fly across the page, amazed at the pictures you created.  Behind him was the railing that you would lean against as you looked at the Queens skyline together.  This fire escape was your entire relationship condensed, the one location where you were allowed to be with each other.  If you used your imagination, you could almost see every single night playing out in front of your eyes.  Spider-Man, with a bendy straw underneath his mask.  Spider-Man, attempting to draw you in the moonlight.  Spider-Man, his hand on your waist and the other in your hair. Spider-Man.

A sound from the masked hero pulled you out of your reverie.  For the first time that night, you looked at him, actually looked at him, instead of picturing what you had already seen.  His shoulders were slumped, almost shaking.  His hands fidgeted, fingers twisting and untwisting in front of him as he stared at you.  You could hear his heavy breathing, hear the shakiness of each gasp; you could hear his pain.

“Spidey…” You take a small step forward.  You were sure that there were boundaries between you two now, but you weren’t sure where they lay. “What’s…what’s wrong?”

“Everything…everything is wrong right now,” Spider-Man took a deep breath and shifted his weight from foot to foot. “I shouldn’t—I know that I shouldn’t have come here, but I—”

“But what?” Your brow furrowed, but you remained frozen in your spot. “What is it?”

“I—” Spider-Man deflated, breath rushing out of him as he hung his head and stared at the ground. “I can’t tell you, Y/N.  I’m sorry.”

“You’re sorry.” You deadpanned his words back to him, irritation rising in your words like bile. “You’re sorry?”

“I just—”

“No, you don’t get to ‘just’ anything,” You crossed your arms. “I have been there for you!  I have been nothing but honest with you from day one and you couldn’t return that to me.  And I understand your reasoning, and even if I don’t agree with it, I still understand it.  But you need to understand this, Spider-Man—”

“Y/N—”

“Can you just shut the fuck up for one minute?” You ran your hands through your hair, pushing it out of your face.  As your words became stormier, so did the sky around you, and the wind whipped your hair right back into your eyes. “You need to understand that you can’t pick and choose to be with me when it’s convenient for you.  You can’t expect me to be here for you when you need someone to touch you, but then shut up when I try to actually know you.”

It was hard to tell underneath the mask, but it looked like Spider-Man’s jaw had locked.  Words continued bubbling to the surface of your lips, and you knew that you weren’t being the kindest with those words, but at the same time, you couldn’t make yourself stop from speaking them.  

Once realized, truth demands to be told.

“I was honest with you.  I told you what I wanted, and when I couldn’t have it, I compromised.  And when that compromise stopped working for me, I was honest again.” You pulled Peter’s hoodie tighter against you. “So you don’t get to show up here again and not extend me the same courtesy, okay? Either you’re completely honest with me in what you have to say or—or you leave.  Right now.”

No matter how true the words were, they still hurt you to say.  Not for the first time, you wished that you had never let yourself fall into this position.  If you had just let Spider-Man go that first night, if you never gave him the drawing of the skyline, if you had let your life continue on its regular path, you could just be out here alone.  The stars had always kept you company before, and they could’ve continued to be all you needed, if you hadn’t let yourself be distracted by the hero.  The stars are pretty to look at, but they couldn’t hold you like he did.  The stars couldn’t sound so sweet when they spoke.  The stars couldn’t bring you to the edge of everything you ever wanted.

“It’s not that easy.” Spider-Man shook his head, speaking in a low voice. “You—you don’t have to consider what I have to consider.  Every moment I spend with you, with anyone that means something to me, is another moment that puts you and them at risk.  And I—I love you too much to do that to you.”

“Yet here you are, on my fire escape, putting me at risk.” You gestured to your surroundings. “So either you’re incredibly selfish and you’re okay with putting me at risk just to fuck with my emotions, or you’re lying and that’s your excuse to keep me in the dark.”

“You know what, Y/N? I am selfish.” Spider-Man’s voice cracked, and he cleared his throat. “I’ve been selfish since the first day I met you, but my selfishness is the most honest thing about me.  I should never have let myself get so close to you, but I did.  And it was careless of me, but being around you made me feel honest.  If there was any way for this to work in a way that doesn’t end with you being targeted, I would find it!”

“Do you really expect me to believe—?”

“Yes, I do!” Spider-Man cut you off in anger. “How could you have spent months with me and not believe that I would do anything to be with you?  Anything to protect you?  The only problem is that I can’t do both of those things at the same time!”

“We’re going in circles.” You shook your head, gaze dropping to the ground. “We had this conversation last night, Spider-Man.  We—we finished this.  You left, it was done; why are you back here?”

“I—” You could practically see Spider-Man’s guards go up again. “I needed to talk to someone. And—and you were the only person I wanted to talk to.  But…but I realize that this was a mistake now.  I just…”

“Just what?” You took a step closer again, almost—but not quite—reaching a hand out to touch his arm. You felt like it was summer again, like you had never touched him before.

“I just needed to feel normal,” Spider-Man slumped again. “I failed today and I needed to feel like I didn’t and when I think of normal I think of you.  But it was stupid to come.  I failed at keeping my family out of danger so what do I do?  Show up and put you in danger.”

“What do you mean, you failed at keeping your family out of danger?” Your brain was tired, so tired from the emotions you had experienced in the last twenty-four hours, but you felt like there was something familiar in Spider-Man’s words (although, to be fair, you always felt that way with him.  He was the unattainable stars in the sky and the comforting sense of home at the same time).

“I should have been there today, at the car accident downtown.” Spider-Man’s shoulders began to shake harder, like he was losing all composure. “People died, the people of my city, and they’re my responsibility to keep safe, Y/N.  And—and there were people I cared about there today, and it’s my fault that they—that they were—”

“Spidey, you can’t be everywhere at once,” You fiddled with the too-long sleeves of Peter’s hoodie. “People die every day.  You can’t take everything to heart like this.”

“What if it had been your family down there?” You could hear Spider-Man becoming more hysterical as he talked, his breathing increasing in speed. “Your mom?  Would you really be so forgiving with me right now?”

“I’m sure—”

“You’re sure what? That you would be fine if your loved ones had been murdered today?” Spider-Man pressed a hand to his masked forehead, chest heaving. “I’m the only one who can stop it, Y/N, it’s my responsibility—”

“You can’t take responsibility for every bad thing that happens.” You took a step closer to the hero, cautiously placing a hand on his shoulder for comfort. “You can’t save everyone.  You may be a superhero, but you’re still a teenager.  Today, downtown?  That wasn’t your fault.”

“What about when it is my fault?” You could hear panic rising in Spider-Man’s voice, and could hear him getting choked up.  You realized that, underneath the hero mask, the boy was crying. “There have been so many times, Y/N, where it was my fault!  I wasn’t strong enough or wasn’t fast enough or wasn’t aware enough, I just wasn’t enough!” Spider-Man inhaled deeply, like he was having trouble getting air into his lungs. “You deserve more, and my aunt deserves more, and my friends deserve more, and Queens deserves more, everyone deserved more than—than what I can do, and—”

“Spidey, you have to breathe,” Screw being cautious, you thought, as you placed your hands on Spider-Man’s masked face. “You can’t panic right now, okay?”

“And I want to give you what you want, so, so badly,” Spider-Man’s hands came to rest on top of yours. “So badly, Y/N, I want to give you everything.  But I—I can’t be selfish; I know I am, but I can’t be. When I get close to people they get hurt!  And I can’t watch you die, I just can’t.  I’ve seen so many people die, so many—”

“Spidey, you wouldn’t watch me die, I can handle—” Before you could finish your sentence, Spider-Man twisted out of your grip.  He clutched his chest and backed away, towards the edge of the fire escape.

“I watched my uncle die!  He is dead, because of me!” Spider-Man screamed, unraveling before you. “People die because of me!  They die because I can’t save them, and one day, Y/N, one day I might not be able to save you!  And, God, I can’t fucking breathe in this thing, fuck—”

“Spider-Man—” You watched as the hero’s legs buckled and he fell to his knees before you.  You rushed over, grabbing onto his shoulders as you knelt in front of him.

“Spidey?” You gave him a light shake.  You could feel the heat of his body radiating through his suit, almost burning your palms.

“Is this what you wanted?” Spider-Man kept his gaze trained on the ground. “Is this what you wanted to see?  Because this is me, Y/N.  This is who I am.  I’m—I’m a mess, and I can’t do anything that I need to do, I just let everyone down, and, fuck—” Spider-Man reached up and tore of his mask, tossing it to the side. Peter Parker’s tear stained looked up at you. “Is this what you wanted?”

Your hands automatically released Spider-Man’s—no, Peter’s—shoulders in shock.  You stared into the brown eyes of your friend.  For the first time that night, you had no idea what to say, what to think, what to feel.  All you could do was stare.

“Y/N,” Peter’s shaky, panic filled voice called to you. “Y/N, I know you’re disappointed it’s me, but—but please say something.”

You reached a hand out slowly, just like you had the night you first kissed the boy in front of you. It seemed obvious who he was now; you stared at those lips all day long, kissed them at night—how had you not knows?

Softly, your hand landed on Peter’s cheek.  You wiped away some of his tears with your thumb as the boy hiccupped, looking at you with uncertain eyes.

“Peter.” You addressed the hero by his real name for the first time.  Peter.  Of course it was Peter.  There was never anyone else that it could have been, no one else who could have made you feel everything you felt in that moment.  Of course he was the stars.  Of course he was home.

“Peter,” You began again, softly but firmly. “Nothing about you will ever disappoint me.”

Peter squeezed his eyes shut as more tears slipped out, and he bowed his head.  He sniffed loudly as you leaned in, placing your forehead against his.

“Do you hear me?” You waited until the boy opened his eyes and returned your gaze. “You’ve never let me down, Peter, and you have never disappointed me.  It makes me sad that you waited so long to tell me, and it makes me sad that you don’t think you’re good enough, but don’t think, not even for one second, that I’m sad it’s you.  Because I’m not.”

“I—” Peter took a shaky breath. “I was scared to tell you it was me.  Because—because we never talked before, and I thought you would prefer Spider-Man over—over Peter Parker.”

“You thought I would prefer someone who had to keep me a secret?” You pressed your forehead against Peter’s a little harder, reinforcing your words. “You thought I would prefer someone who could never truly be honest with me?  You and Spider-Man are the same person.  I liked both of you, but—”

“But?” Peter questioned softly, his hand coming up to rest on your cheek.

“But I could only ever love one of you.” You exhaled shakily. “And that’s you, Peter.  It could only ever be you.”

You sat in silence for a moment, both of you cradling the other’s face, neither wanting to let go. Where did you go from here?

“Y/N,” Peter muttered softly, breaking into your thoughts. “Do you…do you trust me?”

A small smile played on your lips as you registered his words, and remembered the last time he had spoken them, the last time you had been this close. “Yes.”

Peter tilted his head to the left, slowly closing what little distance was left between your lips.

You had kissed Peter many times before, but knowing it was Peter made it feel different.  Now, when you came together, it didn’t feel so much like falling as it did flying.  There was no fear of hitting the ground and no worry about the aftermath; there was only soft and love and soaring and Peter. Always Peter.

Your hands moved from his face to his hair, tangling in his light and loose curls as you pulled back.  Peter’s grasp, in turn, travelled from your cheeks to your waist, pulling you closer and tighter than he ever had before.

The Art of Upcycling 

In 1995, as the culmination of my doctoral work, I’d planned a fairly complex graduate recital of duets with artists from four different mediums (dance, poetry, film, & painting).  But, when nearly all of my collaborators fell through, just 6 weeks before the performance, my mentor told me a Duke Ellington story that has informed my resiliency ever since.  Apparently, Duke was coaching an emerging conductor as he led a big band with limited instrumentalists.  When his mentee asked, “How am I supposed to conduct this song with only one sax, two trumpets, a bass, no drums and no trombones?” Duke replied, “You gotta work with what you got!”.  Whether we like it or not, Covid has asked many of us to “make do” with less than the usual resources available to us.  Botched DIY haircuts and suffocating, Mcguyvered facemasks have been a few low points in our upcycling attempts.  

But there have been many more examples of highly inventive, and even elegant solutions that have emerged.   In fact, the expansiveness of the creativity that is currently happening is in direct inverse proportion to the limiting constraints of our present circumstances.

The industry that has perhaps most inventively and profitably capitalized on the current DIY trend is the upcycled fashion world.  Businesses like Depop, which sell primarily upcycled or reconstructed clothes online, have seen a 65% increase in sales since March. I’ve always been a huge fan of repurposed art projects like these. And, as a lifelong environmentalist and musician, I’ve found ways to intersect my passions in some of our own upcycling projects.  Below, is an interactive music wall that Instruments of Change built out of trash in 2017.

Homegrown Goodness

Textiles and furniture have not been the only mediums repurposed during Covid.  This period has also seen a huge resurgence in urban gardening, using many upcycled approaches.  Maybe this is because the current rules, restricting human touch, have us all hungry to work with our hands. Not to mention the fact that gardening provides a more autonomous alternative to feeding ourselves, while we all try to limit our trips to the grocery store.  Consequently, apartment dwellers with little more than an asphalt parking spot for land, have found ways to plant flowers, grow vegetables and keep bees.  

This follows a pattern that emerged during former social crises, seen in the Victory Gardens that cropped up all over North America, after both World Wars.

Private Serenades

“When all you want is pancakes but you just get eggs.”   That was the first line of a song I collaboratively wrote with one of our Lullaby Project participants a few years ago.  In the lyrics of the chorus, the self-comforting strategy for life’s disappointing moments, which this mom shared with her children, has really helped me in the past few months.  “Let it out, move right on, let it go.”  

So, in an effort to relinquish any less-than feelings I’ve experienced during our “distanced” reality, the first step has been to voice them.  And for me, what needs to be cleared right now is my complicated relationship with the new member of our household.  His name starts with a letter near the end of the alphabet.  And while Geoff, as someone with a fairly common name, has always secretly wished for a pseudonym that could start with X, it’s not Xenon, his alter ego, that I’m referring to.  It’s Zoom.  I imagine most of you know him well by now, too.

Of course, I appreciate the facile way in which he has allowed me to connect with people near and far.  I have been continually surprised about the ways in which he has facilitated creative collaboration, beyond my wildest expectations.  I’ve been tickled by the novelty of the intercontinental cocktail hours and birthday parties he’s invited me to.  And I’ve taken full advantage of his livestream capacity to bring world-class performers right into my living room.  But, I must confess, I am an analog girl.  Pre-Covid, I probably attended 2 live art events a week.  My TV-viewing time amounted to little more than 30 minutes per day.  I’ve never used an e-reader and purchase a few paperbacks a month, because something about the printed page in my hand truly does bring the words more to life for me.  And I held out until a few years ago to get a cell phone, because a face-to-face coffee with a friend always appealed far more than a text.   So, some of these Zoom experiences have left me sadly cold.  It’s hard to admit this, because I’ve earnestly tried to mine the internet for artful experiences that could soothe myself and others during this time.  And it is certainly true that I have been moved, at times, by many generous offerings of music or dance or theatre - even once brought to tears. But, at least for me, the intangible quality that flesh and bones performance brings has just been undeniably absent.  This many not be the case for people who were already far more accustomed to digital forms of entertainment.  But, if I’m to be completely honest, rarely have I felt the hair stand up on my arms or goosebumps shiver up my spine the way live performance so often elicits.   And denial has never worked for me.  So, I guess now that I’ve “let it out”, I can “move right on”.  To a place of dreaming about what else might be possible within our current constraints.  And luckily, in full Duke Ellington style, many artists are already “working with what they’ve got” by responding to this quandary in very imaginative ways.

For me, the universal striving that this sublime Bach Sonata expresses usually conjures quiet stirrings in my belly.  So, while I listen in this compromised digital format, to a tinnier version of what I know is this beautiful player’s fully-bodied tone resonating through the cavernous chamber of the airport, I can at least try to live vicariously through her audience-of-one who I imagine must be completely titillated by such a deeply personal and embodied experience of the music.   I can also take solace from the fact that safe alternatives like these, and others, will slowly begin to emerge as we hopefully enter the next phase of increased, though still socially-distant connections to art and to one another.
