R. Allen Eskew, FAIA, visionary leader of the New Orleans’ architectural community passed away on Tuesday, December 10, 2013. He was 65 years old.
Many will remember him for his built works and endless contributions to the civic and social fabric of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast Region. Projects such as the Audubon Institute’s Aquarium of the Americas, the Shaw Center for the Arts, Downtown New Orleans’ Champions Square, the award-winning Reinventing the Crescent Master Plan and its first phase, Crescent Park, to name a few. All bear the signature of a modern-day urban philosopher, designer extraordinaire, environmental and cultural steward, and community champion.
“Allen Eskew represented the best of architects and architecture,” offered Robert Ivy, FAIA, Chief Executive Officer of the American Institute of Architects. “His life was marked by a passion and drive toward excellence that touched all who knew him or visited the places and spaces he created throughout his lifetime. Working in collaboration with other talented architects and planners, he created a body of enviable work, from master planning the New Orleans World’s Fair to individual buildings ranging from civic enrichment to university research. Allen’s infectious joy and his serious efforts made the world a better place.”
One can argue that buildings are the lasting legacy of any architect worth remembering. However, in Allen’s case, it can be argued that his greatest contributions and achievements are not framed by steel, glass, or mortar, but rather in the context of how they came to be. In an era of ever-increasing polarity, Allen had an uncanny knack for building consensus and progress through thoughtful discussion, creative thinking, the insertion of levity, and meaningful dialogue. Poised and confident, he led with humility, charm and an intellectual generosity that evokes a contemporary mash-up of Atticus Finch and “the Dude.”
Allen’s work represents one man’s commitment to design as craft, but, more importantly, it speaks volumes to the character of a larger, deeply personal vision and the modus operandi of a humble civic leader and engaged citizen-architect. Allen always spoke passionately of his work and leadership in managing the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition.
Seen as a seminal moment in his career, the massive undertaking prompted Allen to establish his own firm, Eskew, Vogt, Salvato & Filson, in the spring of 1986. The practice would continue to evolve and became Eskew+Dumez+Ripple in 2000. Over the course of this period, Eskew would cultivate and nurture a design studio of national prominence and distinction.
Aside from his consistent investment into the physical development of the city, he went well beyond design to invest in the people who made it possible. Whether through his constant mentorship of young professionals across the region or his oft-unseen support of the entrepreneurial spinoffs from his own studio, Allen consistently placed people as his top priority. He never shied away from difficult conversations and almost rhythmically pursued change as a catalyst for positive opportunity.
“Allen went to extensive lengths to gather people around a table, be it for a design charette or a leisurely meal, and more often than not, the former morphed into the latter,” recalls Steve Dumez, his Partner and longtime colleague at the firm. “People mattered, communities mattered, culture, music and the arts mattered. Allen felt a tremendous responsibility to all of these and freely devoted his personal and professional time and resources to support them however he could.”
Allen loved New Orleans with an abiding passion that was contagious. One only need examine the critical role Allen played in the rebuilding efforts of the city and the long road to recovery following the destruction of Hurricane Katrina.
Regarding these efforts Alex Krieger, FAIA, wrote: “Ask most anyone to identify an architect consistently engaged in the voluminous, arduous, acrimonious, emotion-sapping yet crucial public discussions about the rebuilding of New Orleans following Katrina and Allen Eskew’s name will surface. He has been there: at all of the public ruminations and remains at the center of ongoing discussions. Not with the intention to seize advantage, spread theories, cajole or reprimand, but to help. Eskew believes that it is an obligation of citizenship to stay engaged, and to assist others about how to remain engaged as productively as possible.“ Without the intention to do so, Allen became one of New Orleans’ greatest champions and a deeply personal hero to so many.
Immediate funeral arrangements will be private and a memorial tribute is being planned to honor Allen’s life and legacy shortly after the New Year.
In addition, a memorial fund is being established to honor Allen’s civic and mentorship legacy. Details will be made available in the coming weeks through the Eskew+Dumez+Ripple website.

In France, Jean Paul Gaultier Styles the Euro

PARIS — Over his 40-year career, the fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier has had his share of odd requests but until last year, he had never been asked to dress a coin.
His imagination has produced outrageous concepts like fitting Madonna into a pointy conical bra, slipping the bearded transgender Eurovision winner Conchita Wurst into a couture dress and sending models down a runway lined with menorahs for his fall 1993 Chic Rabbis collection.
Still, when the Monnaie de Paris called, Mr. Gaultier was taken aback. The oldest institution in France, which produces the country’s coinage, wanted the veteran bad boy of fashion to design a limited-edition set of coins.
“It was such a surprising proposition that I had no choice but to accept,” Mr. Gaultier said.
The Monnaie de Paris, or Paris Mint, dates back 12 centuries — to the year 864 — when Charles the Bald, grandson of Charlemagne, ordered the creation of a coining workshop in Paris to serve as the country’s foremost mint.

In 2010, intending to spotlight its heritage and exceptional savoir-faire, the mint began asking the best craftsmen in France to produce limited-edition coins.
Some, like Mr. Gaultier’s, would have wide circulation. Others, produced with the label Excellence à la Française, would appeal primarily to collectors and connoisseurs of craftsmanship; its participants have included Cartier, Baccarat, Van Cleef & Arpels, and the porcelain company Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres.
“The idea was to marry two different know-hows to produce new objects,” Christophe Beaux, then the chief executive of the mint, said in an interview last year. (Aurélien Rousseau now holds the post.)
La France par Jean Paul Gaultier, as the new collection was called, was introduced to the public in March, with some additional pieces released in September. The designs reflected the designer’s signature mix of irreverence and humor: the Eiffel Tower wrapped in a corset, a leggy model dressed in Napoleon’s First Consul uniform, a pair of musclebound sailors in Gallic striped sweaters arm wrestling, a corset-wearing hen dancing with a Gallic rooster in a Breton top, and a corseted punk Marianne (the female figure that is a symbol of the French Republic) kicking up her cancan skirt before the Moulin Rouge.

The collection included 25,000 200-euro gold coins, 25,000 €50 colorized silver coins, 50,000 €50 plain silver coins and 1.34 million €10 coins.
“Creative freedom is very important to me,” Mr. Gaultier said. “To my surprise, I discovered at La Monnaie a place that was both creative and free. It is a fascinating place that promotes tradition yet functions with cutting-edge technology.”
Showcasing its traditions and technology for the public was part of the reason that, in 2011, the mint began extensive renovations of its site on the Quai de Conti along the Seine, in the Sixth Arrondissement. (Louis XV ordered the construction, and the mint moved into the completed building in 1775.)
The work was finished last fall, allowing the institution to offer tours of its museum and craftsmanship demonstrations. “We have completed the renovations and made our workshops visible to the public,” said Claude Giffin, the mint’s marketing and development director. “The Monnaie has been a secret place until now. We are opening our doors and making this a living place.”

The on-site workshops include engraving and striking ateliers as well as jewelry and enameling workshops that employ about 300 people and annually produce 100,000 medals, 120,000 gold coins and 130,000 official decorations.
(Ordinary coins are produced in the mint’s factory in Pessac, a town in southwestern France; paper currency is produced by national central banks in the eurozone.)
The renovations added a shop and cafe, and created space for art exhibitions. The mint also gained a notable anchor tenant, the French chef Guy Savoy, whose on-site restaurant opened in 2015 and now has three Michelin stars.
Last fall, when Mr. Savoy was invited to participate in the Excellence program, he chose the egg as the central motif for his coins.

His pièce de résistance was an amusing €5,000 coin designed as a fried egg decorated with a slice of truffle, with only 11 copies made.
“The egg, banal as it may seem, is a cooking ingredient with infinite possibilities,“ Mr. Savoy said. “It takes extreme precision to cook an egg. The same precision went into producing these coins. You can almost feel the gold yolk wobble when you pick one up.”
Joaquin Jimenez, the mint’s creative director and its principal engraver, said, “Collaborations are a chance for us to confront métiers we rarely come across.
“The challenge for us is to take a flat coin and give it a different volume,” he said. “Each collaboration calls for its own special techniques.”

That observation was echoed last year by Nicolas Bos, the chief executive of Van Cleef & Arpels, when he introduced the jewelry house’s coin collection observing its 110th anniversary, produced in collaboration with the mint.
“As jewelers, we are used to three-dimensionality, volume and color,” he said. “Here, we faced the challenge of adapting our drawings to a coin’s flat surface while preserving an element of jewelry.”
The collection was highlighted by an 11-piece edition of €5,000 coins of pure gold, each weighing one kilogram (2.2 pounds) and set with a diamond-studded butterfly. There also was a set of €500 gold coins with butterfly inserts in mother-of-pearl, and €10 silver coins in the quatrefoil shape of the jeweler’s Alhambra line.
“The collaboration was eye-opening for us,” Mr. Bos said. “It was love at first sight between the engravers and our jewelers because we realized we come from the same world and speak the same language.”
The collectible coins, available only in the mint’s shop and on its website, are stamped with a face value, making them legal tender in Europe, though their retail price is much higher.
The €5,000 coin by Van Cleef, for instance, cost €130,000, or $153,920.
“You could theoretically use that coin to pay for things in a store,” Mr. Beaux said last year. “But I would not recommend it given the price a kilo of gold.”
But Mr. Gaultier’s €10 coins, sold at face value in post offices and tobacco shops around France, are perfectly good legal tender for a bagful of croissants at the local boulangerie.

What is a computer worm and how does it spread?
During his first year at Cornell in 1988, Robert Tappan Morris Jr. released what is widely considered to be the world’s first worm (an achievement that earned him three years of probation, 400 hours of community service and a $10,500 fine).
When asked why he did it, Morris simply replied:
“To demonstrate the inadequacies of current security measures on computer networks by exploiting the security defects that I had discovered.”
Little did Morris know how enduring his words would turn out to be.
Fast forward 30 years and worms are still exploiting vulnerable systems, endlessly replicating themselves and wiggling their way into poorly protected computers. Indeed, the worm component of WannaCry ransomware made it possible to wreak havoc on computers around the world, infecting more than 200,000 systems in over 150 countries and holding the infected machines ransom for $300 a pop. Mere weeks later, Petya/NotPetya ransomware used a worm to spread within local networks.
So, worms are very much alive and well in 2017 – but what can you do about it?
Well, when it comes to computer worms (and just about every other ailment, for that matter), prevention is always the best cure. Stay vigilant and minimize your risk of infection by learning more about how worms function, the most common ways they spread and how you can stop them dead in their tracks.
What exactly is a computer worm?
A computer worm is a form of malware, just like its more notorious cousin, the virus. Where a worm differs from a virus is that it typically doesn’t infect or manipulate files on its own. Instead, it simply clones itself over and over again and spreads via a network (say, the Internet, a local area network at home, or a company’s intranet) to other systems where it continues to replicate itself.
In turn, these clones reproduce and spread and, in a very short time period, can quickly infect an enormous number of machines. For instance, it’s estimated that the infamous ILOVEYOU worm infected about 10 percent of the world’s internet-connected computers within just 10 days.
How have worms changed?
Traditional computer worms were created simply to spread. Left unchecked, they would multiply exponentially and disrupt network bandwidth, but they did not actually alter a system’s functionality. This all changed in 2004 with the arrival of Witty, a worm that attacks the firewall and computer security products of a specific company and is thought to be the first worm to carry a payload (a piece of code designed to do real, tangible damage).
Since then, a number of payload-carrying worms have been unleashed on the world, with damage ranging from Nyxem’s ability to delete Microsoft Office files to the keylogging capabilities of Daprosy.
As worms continue to become more advanced, there’s a growing need for users and businesses alike to up the ante and prevent the spread of worms. While Emsisoft Anti-Malware offers an excellent level of protection against all known worms, you can further reduce your risk of infection with some insight into how the nasty critters spread.
How do computer worms spread?
Email
One of the most common ways for worms to spread is via email spam. In years gone by, worms could hide in the main text of an email, but as modern email clients caught on and began blocking direct embedding circa 2010, the risk for this type of attack is fairly low.
While embedded worms may be things of the past, email attachments remain popular hiding spots for worms. What may appear to be a benign work document or personal photo can, in fact, be hiding malicious code, waiting to be released when you click a link or open said attachment. Once a machine has been infected, the worm may replicate itself by emailing itself to everyone in your address book or automatically replying to emails in your inbox.
Reduce risk: Be very wary when opening emails (even those sent to you by someone in your address book). If you think a link or attachment looks suspicious, check with the sender before clicking anything.
Operating system vulnerabilities
Every operating system has its vulnerabilities (yes, even macOS) and some worms are specifically coded to take advantage of these weak points. Perhaps the most infamous example is Conficker, a worm first identified in 2008 which exploited a vulnerability in a network service present in many versions of Windows, including Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, and Windows Server 2008 R2 Beta and Windows 7 Beta. At its peak, Conficker infected as many as 15 million computers.
Reduce risk: Operating systems are continually receiving security updates designed to protect your computer from worms and other malware. Always keep your operating system up to date, have auto-update enabled and regularly spring clean your machine.
Instant messaging
Worms can take on similarly deceptive forms in instant messaging software and take advantage of users who are probably not on high alert when using such services.
In the past, instant messaging software such as mIRC, MSN Messenger, Yahoo IM and ICQ proved to be exceptionally fertile breeding grounds for worms. In today’s digital landscape, modern chat systems are just as vulnerable, with Facebook Messenger a common infection point for worms such as Dorkbot, which spreads via an executable file disguised as a JPG image.
Reduce risk: Keep your guard up when using chat services and social media platforms in general (Facebook is home to more than worms!). Always verify URLs before clicking and be wary of downloading any attachments – even those that have apparently been sent by a trusted contact.
Smartphones
Globally, there were about 2.8 billion active smartphones being used at the end of 2016, according to data collated by market intelligence firm Newzoo. With these figures in mind, it should come as little surprise that worm creators are increasingly turning their attention to mobile devices.
Research from Syracuse University suggests that every major mobile operating system (including Android, iOS, Blackberry and Windows Phone) are potentially vulnerable to worms as they all support HTML5-based mobile apps. One of the key security flaws of HTML5 is that malicious code can easily be inserted into it, meaning that when a user launches an app they could also be unwittingly executing a damaging program.

April 2017 updates for Get & Transform in Excel 2016 and the Power Query add-in
Excel 2016 includes a powerful set of features based on the Power Query technology, which provides fast, easy data gathering and shaping capabilities and can be accessed through the Get & Transform section on the Data ribbon.
Today, we are pleased to announce five new data transformation and connectivity features that have been requested by many customers.
These updates are available as part of an Office 365 subscription. If you are an Office 365 subscriber, find out how to get these latest updates. If you have Excel 2010 or Excel 2013, you can also take advantage of these updates by downloading the latest Power Query for Excel add-in.
These updates include the following new or improved data connectivity and transformation features:
Support for the same file extensions in Text and CSV connectors.
ODBC and OLE DB connectors—support for Select Related Tables.
Enhanced Folder connector—support for “Combine” from the Data Preview dialog.
New Change Type Using Locale option in Column Type drop-down menu inside Query Editor.
New Insert Step After option in Steps pane inside Query Editor.
Support for the same file extensions in Text and CSV connectors
With this update, we revised the list of supported file extensions in From Text and From CSV connectors. Now, you can browse and select any text (*.txt), comma-separated value (*.csv) or formatted text space delimited (*.prn) file as the first step of the import flow for both connectors. Alternatively, you can switch to the All files (*.*) filter option and select to import data from any other unlisted file.
ODBC and OLE DB connectors—support for Select Related Tables
When using the ODBC and OLE DB connectors, we enabled the Select Related Tables button in the Navigator dialog. This option—already available for other relational data sources—allows users to easily select tables that are directly related to the set of already selected tables in the Navigator dialog.
Enhanced Folder connector—support for Combine Binaries from the Data Preview dialog
In the January 2017 update, we shipped a set of enhancements to the Combine Binaries experience. You can learn more about those enhancements in this article.
This month, we made it easier for customers to access the Combine Binaries feature by allowing them to combine multiple files directly from the folder Data Preview dialog within the Get Data flow, without having to go into the Query Editor.
Note that exposed multiple options (Combine and Combine & Load) allow customers to further refine their data before loading it into the worksheet or Data Model.
New Change Type Using Locale option in Column Type drop-down menu inside Query Editor
In the Query Editor, it is possible to see and modify column types by using the Column Type drop-down menu in the preview area.
With this release, we added the Change Type Using Locale option to this drop-down menu (previously available by right-clicking the column header and then selecting Change Type > Using Locale). This option allows you to specify the desired column type and locale to use for the conversion, which affects how text values are recognized and converted to other data types, such as dates, numbers, etc.
New Insert Step After option in the Steps pane inside Query Editor
With this update, we added a new context menu option in the Query Editor window to easily insert new steps in existing queries. The Insert Step After option lets users insert a new custom step right after the currently selected step, which can be the final step or any previous step within the query.
