According to Hindu scriptures and belief, every river, forest, and mountain is a living person who gives interview in human or godly form to their devotees. On the auspucious occassion of Goverdhan Puja, the festival of devotees of Sacred cows and holy mountains, let me present to you the origin of festival which was founded by lord Krishna himself to mark significance and emphasis roles of mountains to future generations who will be bearing wrath of Kali having fallen to corrupt desires of flesh and blood.
The people of Brijbhumi, where childhood of Krishna was spent were preparing to perform offerings to Indra the king of all Gods in heaven and around.
Little Krishna was amused as he knew how Indra swoll with pride at the respect he commanded and thought high of himself. To humble him, Krishna staged a play.
He asked his father, Nand what was the occasion everyone was busy about. His father explained him the occasion was to offer prayers, and offerings, with sacrifices (not to confuse with westerm concept of a sacrifice) to Indra as a show of respect and gesture of thankfulness because he only is responsible for the well being of all human. Krishna questioned him, but how so respected father because we all are dependent on Goverdhan mountain for our needs. Our cows graze over it, the herbs for making sacrifices to Indra are harvested from Goverdhan and we are more dependent on him than Indra. So why we should not worship Goverdhan instead?
The village elders hearing this were worried and warned Krishna of Indra's wrath.
Krishna didn't heed them. He advocated we worship Indra, but we are sustained by Goverdhan. If we worship Goverdhan Mountain, he is our saviour. On the prayers of people of village, Krishna made Goverdhan mountain appear and acknowledge he was present there.
When Indra learnt people were worshipping a mountain rather than him, he was deeply offended and to punish the dwellers of Brij and show his supremacy he sent all his seven clouds to rain over them and drawn them unless they bow and seek his forgiveness.
Affected by the thunderous showers of all clouds over them, villagers rushed to Nand and Krishna. Krishna assured them they have prayed Goverdhan and hence he shall be their saviour. He picked the mountain on his little finger and complete village moved under it after him. They stayed safe and well protected from rains under Goverdhan that stood balanced on Krishna's little finger.
This made Indra realise his arrogance and his rudeness. He prayed forgiveness to Krishna and withdrew his clouds. Sun shone overbBrij once again and people were able to return home. Instantly life returned to former normal order.
This story is not just a story for leisure reading or narrating a mythology to your children for bedtime. It holds a deep message Krishna has left for us all.
Through this staged play of his, Krishna has highlighted not to ignore or take for granted the lesser heard of heros in iur life. He wants us to be thankful to nature and especially flora and fauna for they are the decisive factors rains as devastating it may come will leave an impact in us. Krishna stated clearly that as strong and mighty you might be, you are still ineffective against some unsung stone universe holds to her heart.
But above all, he has set an example to question, to challange, and to justify a given tradition while still creating room to establish another provided it is as unyielding and yet dependable as Goverdhan himself. Because Govardhan is formed of two seperate words, Gau (cow)+ Vardhan(increase, but here it means one that increases).
A hindi translation will be presented after I finish Chitragupt Puja tomorrow. Till then, let my pen rest for it feeds me like a plough and defends me like a pistol. It is my identity i am proud of.

Today is the start of Diwali – the Hindu Festival of Light. Millions of Hindus around the world will be marking the festival by holding feasts, firing fireworks and wearing traditional garments. Family and friends will be getting together to celebrate goodness triumphing over evil – as well as looking forward at the year ahead. Here is how to wish loved ones a ‘Happy Diwali’ in Hindi, Punjabi and Tamil. To greet someone in Hindi for Diwali it’s best to say ‘Diwali ki Shubhkamnayein’ or ‘Shubh Deepavali’. These both mean Happy Diwali. Meanwhile in Punjabi it would be ‘Tuhanu Diwali diyan boht both vadhaiyan’ and in Marathi ‘Shubh Diwali’ or ‘Diwalichya hardik Shubhechha’. Deepavali Nalvazhthukal is the best way to greet someone in Tamil. The first day is known as Dhanteras, with ‘Dhan’ meaning wealth and ‘teras’ meaning the 13th day of the lunar fortnight on the Hindu calendar. On this day prosperity is celebrated and people clean their house in preparation for Goddess Lakshmi who is welcomed into people’s homes. People purchase gold and new kitchen utensils. The second day is known as Naraka Chaturdasi or Chhoti Diwali, meaning small Diwali. On this day the goddess Kali and Lord Krishna were believed to destroy the demon Narakasura and free 16,000 captive princesses. People decorate doorways and courtyards of homes on this day and they start bursting crackers. The third day of the celebrations, the most significant day of the Diwali festival, is known as Amavasya and it is the new moon day. This is the darkest day of the month and Lakshmi is worshipped on this day, with a worship performance, Lakshmi Puja, in the evening. People light diyas, which are small clay lamps, and candles on the most important day of Diwali. Fireworks are let off everywhere for the festival of lights. The fourth day of Diwali has various meanings across India. In the North it is celebrated as the day when Lord Krishna defeated Indra the god of thunder and rain, but in Gujarat it is celebrated as the start of the new year. In Maharashtra on this day Bali Puja is performed to seek the blessings of demon king Bali. The fifth day is known as Bhai Duj. It celebrates (at India) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4GwE0BhapM/?igshid=135vn0n6fo6l9
