Welcome to the Jungle
[Author's note: I literally just made a Tumblr account today, and saw your call for submissions. Here's the opening to the ridiculous engineer story I'm currently working on, which is Commander-adjacent and set in HoT. Hopefully I did this right.]
**
Dusk came early to the Heart of Maguuma. Shadows lengthened in the early afternoon and flocks of birds rose flapping from the jungle canopy, confused by the sudden darkness. A curious young eagle ascended on an updraft, wings rippling, to challenge the strange black cloud that blocked out the sun. Her feathers scraped the side of a strange wooden gondola that floated over the forest, and she realized this was no cloud.
Airships. Hundreds of them.
They scudded silently through the muggy air, all moving together like an encroaching fogbank. The eagle swooped up over the nearest airship, her wingtips skimming the surface of its huge fabric hull. Thunderbreaker was painted on the side in fancy white lettering. She couldn’t read, yet she heard voices from the gondola, carried on the wind.
“Pact Engineer Ffeldy!”
“Aye Captain!”
Beyond the glazed gondola window, a female sylvari stood at the helm, her telescope trained on the canopy below. "We're about to drop a kitten-ton of munitions on Mordremoth. Ready the release valve on balloonet one, so we don't launch into the stratosphere when we lose our ballast."
“I’m on it.” A youngish human double-timed along the deck, then nimbly climbed to the roof of the gondola and stretched up to fit a wrench on the balloonet valve. “Ready to maintain neutral buoyancy!” he shouted.
The eagle had seen enough. She tucked her wings and dove through the canopy to alert her forest allies.
Pact Engineer Ffeldy braced himself against the warm, invigorating jungle breeze and clutched the valve’s handle, ready to throw his entire weight on his wrench the second he felt the gondola buck upwards from the impending ballast dump. In his head, he calculated how much air to release, based on the exact weight of the munitions—a number slightly more accurate than “kitten-ton.”
The jungle air smelled of heady exotic flora and rotten fruit, and the humidity made him sweat. Ffeldy’s Aetherblade skyfarer’s coat—captured during the battle for Lion’s Arch—flapped around him, and his golden Seraph wing shield shuddered against his back where it was firmly strapped. A pistol with the telltale crystalized finish of Asuran design rode the holster on his thigh.
“Steady on! Hold your positions!”
The order came from a gilded greenish Sylvari standing on the deck of the massive airship floating to the left and slightly below Thunderbreaker. It was Glory of Tyria, flagship of the Pact fleet, and it carried an assortment of VIPs, to include Pact Marshall Trahearne and the re-formed Destiny’s Edge. Ffeldy had only met Captain Logan Thackery in person, but he’d glimpsed the others in passing, and easily identified the figures of Zojja, Eir, and Logan on Glory’s deck. Trahearne stood at the pointed stern.
“Hold, I say!”
With a whoosh, the hundred-odd airships extended their fin-like airbrakes and coasted gradually to a halt, where they bobbed gently in sky, reminding Ffeldy of sleeping quaggans riding the swells in Frostgorge Sound. He glanced down at the peaceful green canopy. Threads of doubt squeezed his insides. Fear cottoned his mouth, making his tongue feel thick and dry. Was Mordremoth—or some vulnerable part of him—really hiding down there in the forest? Perhaps they were about to unleash an inferno on some unsuspecting Hylek village by accident and he’d have to live with the guilt for the rest of his life.
Too late to turn back now.
“Fire!”
Thunderbreaker lurched upwards. Her lethal payload rocketed downward into the forest canopy. Thin contrails of smoke streaked the sky where, all around Ffeldy, the hundred airships fired in unison at Mordremoth. Hopefully. Ffeldy hauled on the valve with all his strength as air hissed through. He counted: one, two, three…and shut it again as Thunderbreaker’s altitude stabilized.
A whooshing sound made him turn. Huge thorny vines shot from the canopy like grappling hooks, ensnaring many of the lower airships around him. Thunderbreaker bucked again in the turbulent air, her tailfins flapped, and she rotated slowly around—too slowly, blast it—until her needle-sharp nosecone pointed directly at the vulnerable fabric hide of The Glory of Tyria.
“Not good,” Ffeldy murmured as a strange chill blew past his neck, despite the heat. “Against protocol. Bad. Bad!”

Sprinkler Repair Debary
youtube
Executing recurrent assessments is essential for retaining an watering method in Debary Florida. In that way, water's utilised as effectively as is feasible and keep a wholesome surroundings. A repairs and maintenance listing is a fantastic resource that will help you using this course of action, so let's get started. One of the first items we wish to do is eliminate the totally obvious make certain the water's turned on, so I'm planning to visit water meter. It can be turned off if you have the Debary Normal water Firm install a dedicated meter into the sprinkler method. It's turned on mainly because it also materials the home, in this case. In case they have an isolation valve, which this does, I wish to ensure it is on too, the next matter I'm going to start looking is behind circulate equipment to ensure it is absolutely on and. You prefer to make certain you switch it on as slow-moving as is feasible to limitation any damages which may happen to the system's main range if this describes at the first try the system's remaining turned on for the year. If it's spinning, the moment things are billed up, then you would like to look at the Debary liquid meter once again and look at the leak barometer to check out. That's an indicator of any problem downstream that we'll demand to manage if it's spinning. The liquid meter is a fantastic issues snapping shots resource because it can be used to calculate the circulate of all your zones. It is possible to document your data and after that, if you do future lawn sprinkler fix assessments in Debary, it is possible to do a comparison of both sets of facts. That is a symbol of a possible leak when you notice a rise in circulate to obtain a sector. You will have some type of restriction when you notice a lowering of circulate. I'm right here at the watering control and what I wish to do is now guarantee that it happens to be programmed correctly for the very hot Debary weather conditions. I wish to be certain I'm with the suitable watering times authorized by Volusia Area, and I'm watering the most suitable time period for each sector, by carrying out that. Once I've accomplished that, I will do a method verify just where I convert every single sector on for two moments. Like this, I could go out of doors and do my stroll-by means of. If we stroll over the sprinkler method, we're planning to take into consideration things that will get a new consistency on the Rainbird mist go pattern or anything at all that's going to misuse liquid. Certainly, we're searching for damaged Hunter rotor heads. We also want to hunt for MP Rotators that happen to be spraying onto the difficult areas. We wish to be sure the lawn sprinklers are in-line appropriately, watering only the things we want, and after that we want to make certain the heads are plumb and therefore they're not tilted the slightest bit. One final thing I wish to hunt for is any obstructions on the mist nozzle pattern. I just accomplished the stroll-by means of on the initial sector, and something thing I discovered was position liquid approximately this 12-inch pop-up go. This is an indication of a weeping intelligent sprinkler solenoid valve. It might have been a damaged PVC riser. On the other hand, it could possibly be lower watering go empty. I'm going to end my watering fix review, and after that I'll figure out just what ought to be accomplished. Once I reach the solenoid valve, I wish to look at the wires, guarantee that water-proof splices have been utilised, and after that I wish to find out if there's any position liquid on the valve carton, nevertheless when inspecting the Rainbird DV 100 valves, the main thing I wish to know is the valve's place. Position liquid, clearly, is surely an indicator of any problem that will need to be attended to down the road. There's another sprinkler fix factors you should consider if you inspect the Netafim drip method. Initial, you need to make sure the filtering is polished. Following that, you would like to proceed to the far stop on the drip method and look for the drip flush valve. Open up that up and enable the watering method run complete circulate for two moments. Shut the drip range flush valve and after that stroll by means of the other sprinkler method, looking at the emitters to ascertain if there's any situation that is plugged or if perhaps an emitter has blown off of. Just after completing your stroll-by means of, you may want to carry out some extra troubleshooting to figure out just what ought to be mended. I can't highlight for you personally more than enough how important it happens to be to carry out recurrent assessments. Additionally, it can conserve liquid minimizing the expense of your current sprinkler fix in Debary, nevertheless it will not only ensure a wholesome surroundings. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMyEcAjcPcU https://edmonds23667536.tumblr.com/post/183867999958/sprinkler-repair-debary

I’m seeing movies I should have seen before -- and writing down my impressions as part of my overdue education.
Edge of the City (1957)
What a fascinating, complicated movie -- now as well as in its time. It was groundbreaking then for its warm portrayal of an interracial friendship between Tommy Tyler (Sidney Poitier) and the troubled Axel North (John Cassavetes), as well as for showing Poitier in a position of authority among New York City stevedores. The movie was a commercial failure despite getting rave reviews -- in part because it wasn’t screened in the south.
But later criticism of the film wasn’t quite so full of plaudits, pointing out that Poitier’s character is undone by the “Magical Negro” trope, with Tommy dying so that Axel can find himself. It’s a criticism that was heard in the 1960s about Poitier as an actor: he made a string of black-white buddy movies that mainstream audiences applauded but critics in the black power movement saw as feeble and safe when the time for restraint was past.
That’s a debate where I’ll learn more by listening than talking, so I’ll confine myself to observing that there’s a lot to admire about this movie regardless of character critiques. First of all it’s frankly gorgeous, with sumptuous blacks and beautifully composed shots. It has real drive from the stylish opening credits, which contribute to the sense of weighty events being set in motion that will prove hard to stop. And pretty much every performance is terrific: Poitier and Cassavetes, of course, but also Ruby Dee, Kathleen Maguire, Jack Warden, Robert F. Simon and Ruth White.
Two scenes in particular stood out to me. First there’s Poitier’s understated acting as Cassavetes finally lets go of the family secret that’s been haunting him -- without saying a word, you watch him go from puzzled to pained to sympathetic while always calculating how to help. And then, even better, there’s Dee’s transformation from baffled grief to cold fury as she realizes how thoroughly Axel has failed Tommy.
What makes that scene so powerful is that Dee, Cassavetes and Maguire are free to act without having to compete with the movie’s score, which is too often yowling and overwrought. I don’t know enough about movies to trace when and why movie music stopped being intrusive and overly busy, but I’m sure glad it happened.
Edge of the City also made me realize that for all the progress I’ve made as a moviegoer, I still have some big gaps. Edge of the City is generally discussed in the context of Poitier’s other buddy movies, which I haven’t seen, and compared to On the Waterfront. (Ditto.) So! Work to do!
Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936)
My family watches It’s a Wonderful Life every Christmas eve, so by now I’ve seen it at least a dozen times -- enough to appreciate its drum-tight, almost perfectly constructed story. Frank Capra’s Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, from a decade earlier, is  not perfectly constructed. It’s basically two movies welded awkwardly together -- a romantic comedy starring Gary Cooper and Jean Arthur and a courtroom farce in which Cooper, playing the supposed simpleton Longfellow Deeds, takes on the whole crooked system.
The movie’s fun and marks the first of Capra’s consciously crafted social statements, but the narrative 180 is jarring and Cooper’s big speech doesn’t make the catatonic silence that precedes it any more believable. Also, Longfellow sure hits a lot of people. I don’t think you’re allowed to do that in a courtroom, no matter how many populist addresses you’ve just delivered.
Still, it’s entertaining enough. Lionel Sanders is a hoot as the cynical flack, one of many fine performances. The scene where Deeds realizes the woman he loves has betrayed him is particularly fine, and makes up for the parts that don’t work. Cooper’s performance in that scene is all reaction, and wonderful work.
I Love You, Alice B. Toklas (1968)
A limp lifestyle comedy made so mainstream audiences who’d never seen hippies could laugh at them. The sad thing is you can see a better movie trying to fight its way out of the mess. Peter Sellers is good as the repressed lawyer unhappy with his drab life but incapable of changing it -- his slow burn in the first half of the movie is fun to watch. The problem -- actually it’s more than a problem, it’s a fatal case of timid storytelling -- is that slow burn never leads to an ignition. We never see Sellers actually take a deep breath and make a move on his brother’s hippie girlfriend (Leigh Taylor-Young, who’s lovely); instead they’re suddenly just together. Similarly, when Sellers gets tired of having his apartment overrun by stoned, self-absorbed moochers, he doesn’t explode -- he just sulks a bit and things go back to how they were before. There are multiple scenes where we should get a delicious payoff for all Sellers’ good work -- a valve finally blowing, a catharsis, a realization. But the movie never has the guts to go there. It repeatedly settles for safe, easy and lame.
Bullitt (1968)
I thought I’d seen this Steve McQueen cop classic with its legendary car chase through the streets of San Francisco, but I was wrong. The movie’s perfectly suited for McQueen -- his Frank Bullitt navigates an uncertain and dangerous world with an icy stare that’s the only hint of all the emotions he keeps bottled up. (In other words, he’s Steve McQueen.) The story’s spare and businesslike too, with a refreshing lack of cop cliches. Rather than overheated How Dare You Sir-ing with supervisors, the story advances through the sometimes slow, always deliberate work of cops and doctors doing their jobs. It only falters when it drags us back to a DOA romantic subplot with McQueen and the luckless Jacqueline Bisset, who’s saddled with a truly awful What a Wicked World speech. McQueen ignores it; the viewer can only try to do the same.
If the car chase isn’t quite the 11 minutes of perfection it’s made out to be -- even a non-nitpicker will spot the green VW bug that manages to be everywhere at once -- it’s still better than most anything you’ll see from filmmakers who’ve had a half-century to take notes. I think it works so well because, like the rest of the movie, it excises dramatic clutter. One unlucky motorcyclist aside, there’s a minimum of empty garbage cans in weightless flight, acrobatic pedestrians diving miraculously away from bumpers, and dopey close-ups of speedometers. With all that shorn away, you get a visceral sense of being there with the drivers, in danger as they improvise. The sound is similarly spare: the music doesn’t intrude but lets the sounds of tires and engines do the work, and Bullitt and the driver he’s chasing remain silent. Instead of a bunch of yammering about what we already know, we get a single look in a rearview mirror and a hint of a smirk. It’s all we need.

MACCLEAN WATER SOFTENER MAINTENANCE HOW TO
The more often your system regenerates, the more you’ll need to check and add salt to the tank.Īnd for tips on how to clean a brine tank, we recommend you read WaterTech’s blog post: How to Clean a Water Softener Brine Tank. Setting instructions may vary by water softener model.
MACCLEAN WATER SOFTENER MAINTENANCE MANUAL
We recommend that you check the salt level in your brine tank at least monthly. Press and hold the Regen button for three seconds to initiate an immediate manual regeneration. There will usually be several gallons of water in the bottom of the brine tank, but usually is never more than twelve inches high. There is always water in my brine tank, should there be? If so, how much? If a softener is sized correctly, a residential system will use approximately ten pounds of salt per week, or 40-50 pounds of salt per month.īe sure to check your salt and water levels at least once each month. How salt is used depends on water usage and system size. How much salt should my water softener use? If the salt has formed one solid mass (known as bridging), manually break up the salt block by pouring hot water over it-making it easier to break up and remove. And before you add new salt pellets to the brine tank, be sure to loosen up any encrusted salt that may be sticking to the edges of the tank and make sure to break up any large pieces of salt. Make sure that the salt level always remains a few inches above the water level.
MACCLEAN WATER SOFTENER MAINTENANCE FULL
We recommend keeping your brine tank at least one quarter full of water softener salt at all times, and no more than four to six inches below the top of the tank for optimum efficiency. How much salt should I have in my brine tank? You’ll just need add the salt as it gets used up. Fortunately, the valve control panel on most water softeners and conditioners will do all of the calculations for you regarding when to regenerate.
And how much water your household consumesįor example, a larger family will most likely consume more water which will cause your softener to regenerate more frequently, and thus more salt will need to be added more often.
How often you’ll have to add more salt to the brine tank will depend on factors such as: Water softeners and conditioners work effectively with either sodium chloride (commonly referred to as salt) or potassium chloride (actually a type of salt also). So we thought it would be helpful to tackle a few of the commonly asked questions associated with maintaining a brine tank (the plastic tank that sits next to a water softener). Salt is what regenerates the ion resins of a softener. Salt (or brine solution) is a necessary part of the ion exchange process in a water softener.

Carrie Ann Rainey, hiking in Louisiana, belongs to a body-positive outdoor group. “We’re not all the same” when it comes to obesity, one researcher says.
© EMILY KASK
By Jennifer Couzin-FrankelJul. 29, 2021 , 12:00 PM
They rose to fame as the world’s fattest mice. At about 130 grams, the rodents were “the equivalent of 600 pounds in humans,” says diabetes researcher Philipp Scherer. They were born to genetically engineered mouse parents in his lab at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. One set of parents lacked the hormone leptin, an appetite suppressant that signals when it’s time to stop eating. The other parents overproduced the hormone adiponectin, churned out by fat cells, which is thought to support metabolic health, protecting against obesity-linked diseases such as type 2 diabetes.
Scherer’s mouse pups melded their parents’ traits. They ate constantly and became obese. But unlike other leptin-deficient mice (and people), the animals had healthy cholesterol and blood glucose levels and didn’t develop metabolic illnesses such as type 2 diabetes. “ They were exceptionally quote-unquote healthy,” Scherer says, though he wonders whether it’s possible to be truly well while carrying such a considerable fat burden. Despite their metabolic health, the mice didn’t live a normal life span: Their weight left them so off balance that they often flipped over and got stuck, causing dehydration and death.
Still, to Scherer, who described the animals in 2007 and continues to study them, the rodents sharpened an emerging message for people as well as mice: Weight and health can be uncoupled. Many researchers and doctors—and broader societies—take it as a given that obesity means ill health. In fact, says Ruth Loos, who studies the genetics of obesity at the University of Copenhagen, “We can be obese but remain healthy.” Scherer, Loos, and other researchers worldwide are examining genes, animal models, and humans to understand how factors such as the distribution of fat in the body and the nature of fat itself can blunt or compound any health impacts of extra weight. The researchers are also working to define metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) and examine how common it is and how long it persists.
Beyond the research lies a knotty practical question: what the science means for people with obesity and the doctors they see. Undoubtedly, “There are subtypes of obesity,” with some more harmful than others, says Sadaf Farooqi at the University of Cambridge. “You’ve got this massive variation that must be driven by other underlying factors.” At the same time, Farooqi suggests, people who qualify as overweight or obese should generally try to lose weight. “There is a clear correlation between gaining weight and increased risk of type 2 diabetes,” she says, “even if you don’t get it right now.” Furthermore, she and others say, obesity is associated with health problems well beyond metabolic abnormalities, including various cancers and wear and tear on joints.
Others, particularly advocates concerned about discrimination against fat people, make a different argument: Hammering people with advice to “lose weight!” is misguided. “It’s very clear that there are a lot of people in that category called obese [who] don’t have any signs of disease and live long, healthy lives,” says Lindo Bacon, a physiologist, author, and advocate for body positivity affiliated with the University of California, Davis. Bacon says a relentless focus on weight loss can come at the expense of vital medical care. For example, “My father and I both went to orthopedic surgeons because we were having bad knee pain.” Bacon, whose weight qualified as normal, was offered surgery after physical therapy failed, but Bacon’s father was told only to lose weight. “My father went to his death with knee problems. … He could have benefited from stretching, strengthening, knee surgery,” Bacon asserts with frustration. “He didn’t get that.”
Though agreeing that obesity and ill health can travel together, Bacon insists fat itself is not a major player in disease. Social determinants of health, such as poverty, discrimination, and access to healthy food, are likely far more important, Bacon argues. And indeed, some studies have shown that people with obesity who don’t have metabolic dysfunction are often better educated and wealthier than those with obesity-associated health problems.
Many scientists say the evidence is clear that excess fat can pose significant health risks and that losing weight can improve health. But they agree with advocates that care for people with obesity needs to shift from simply pressuring them to shed weight, which often fails. “I’ve worked with so many people who’ve gone through this cycle of losing and regaining and losing and regaining,” says Cynthia Bulik, a clinical psychologist and expert in eating disorders at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and the Karolinska Institute. “It’s created mental torment, it affects their relationships, it affects their social life. It affects everything.” Scientists like Loos hope their work can move the focus away from body weight and toward measurable markers of metabolic health that can be more precisely and effectively targeted.
Rising obesity rates have set off alarm bells for years. In 2018, 42% of U.S. adults were obese, up from about 30% 2 decades earlier, and prevalence is climbing rapidly in other countries, as well. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines obesity as having a body mass index (BMI) of at least 30, a calculation made by dividing weight in kilograms by the square of height in meters. (Although the value of BMI has been questioned, it remains a common metric in medicine and scientific studies.)
Scientists have long explored links between obesity and health problems. For example, according to a 2020 study in Obesity Science and Practice of almost 3 million U.K. adults tracked for an average of 11 years, people with a BMI between 30 and 35 had a risk of type 2 diabetes five times higher than that of people whose BMI was defined as normal. For a BMI of 40 to 45, the risk was 12 times higher. Obesity is also associated with a higher risk of heart disease, stroke, sleep apnea, certain cancers, and osteoarthritis.
Location matters
Differences in where and how fat is stored can affect underlying health. Excess visceral fat, deep in the abdomen, is associated with more inflammation and fat buildup in certain organs (inset), and is more harmful than subcutaneous fat, which is stored under the skin and can promote health.

Yet many people with obesity have healthy cholesterol and blood glucose levels, whereas many lean people do not. “You go to an obesity clinic, [where] people weigh 120 kilograms, 140 kilograms. Some have problems and some don’t,” says Antonio Vidal-Puig, who studies and treats metabolic disease at Cambridge. Conversely, he notes, patients who weigh 70 or 80 kilograms might be insulin resistant and have diabetes. Trends also vary by ethnicity. People of South Asian ancestry “develop diabetes without the levels of obesity in other populations,” Farooqi says. “We’re not all the same.”
Scherer’s mice offered a clue to the variation: Their fat was stored under the skin rather than in muscle or in organs such as the liver. That pattern aligned with what obesity researchers and doctors have observed in people. Large population studies have shown that people with excessive visceral fat, deep in the abdomen, are at higher risk of health problems than people with high volumes of subcutaneous fat, under the skin of the thighs, arms, and backside. When someone has high visceral fat, “that’s when metabolic disease occurs,” says Bernard Zinman, an endocrinologist at the University of Toronto. Visceral fat generates inflammatory molecules, and imaging studies have shown it’s associated with fat buildup in the liver, pancreas, and muscle.
By contrast, subcutaneous fat can nurture good health, serving as a store of energy and helping cushion muscle and bones. Some evidence indicates people with ailments such as heart failure or cancer fare better if they are modestly overweight than if they are lean. In 2005, a CDC and National Cancer Institute research team reported that overall, people who were overweight but not obese had slightly lower mortality rates than people whose weight qualified as normal. “Fat is our friend, and we need it,” Scherer says. “If you don’t have adipose tissue, you really are in big trouble.”
Subcutaneous fat is also a safety valve: Without such a zone for stashing extra fat deposits, they travel to the visceral region. Rare disorders called lipodystrophy syndromes illustrate this vividly. Affected people cannot accumulate subcutaneous fat and appear thin, yet they develop diabetes and fatty liver disease.
“Do you have all these walk-in closets” for healthy fat storage, Zinman asks, “or do you live in a condo where you have just one cupboard? Some people have tremendous ability to store calories, and others don’t.”
Another clue about the value of fat storage capacity—and subcutaneous fat itself—comes from a class of diabetes drugs called thiazolidinediones introduced in the late 1990s. Intriguingly, while reducing blood glucose levels they also caused patients to gain weight. Several studies reported that the drugs help convert fat precursor cells into mature fat cells in subcutaneous regions. Patients added fat subcutaneously, which appeared to reduce inflammation and improve the body’s response to insulin.
“It’s not how fat you are, it’s what you do with it that counts,” Vidal-Puig titled a commentary he co-wrote in 2008. At the same time, Vidal-Puig expresses a quandary he and colleagues face: He is reluctant to use the term MHO, which he worries could mislead people into thinking, “it’s OK to be obese.”
“We are not saying that,” he says. Rather, some people “are healthy because they are resilient to obesity.” Vidal-Puig wants to stick to the science of that resilience by exploring how obesity can coexist with measures of health. “We are explaining how it works.”
Loos has hunted for an explanation for 10 years, ever since a strip of DNA sent her down an unexpected path. She was part of a research group searching for genes that predispose people to extra body fat, and three stretches of DNA popped up. One appeared to boost body fat in the hips and thighs—and yet it sat next to a gene called IRS1, which was known to reduce risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The discovery, the first of its kind, “set us off,” Loos says, and she began to try to tease apart fat and metabolic health.
In February, she and colleagues reported more gene variants that appear to have similar double action. Writing in Nature Metabolism, they cataloged 62 variants associated both with more fat—including higher BMI and higher body fat percentage—and a lower risk of cardiac and metabolic diseases. The DNA included areas that control inflammation, energy expenditure, and insulin signaling.
Loos used to work one floor below Vidal-Puig at Cambridge, and the two are now collaborating: He is studying some of the DNA variants she identified. Vidal-Puig is especially interested in genes that may lead to changes in fat tissue over time, such as helping improve storage capacity for subcutaneous fat or reducing inflammation. He’s also exploring the role of genes in fibrosis, a thickening or scarring of connective tissue that promotes harmful inflammation and may contribute to conditions including fatty liver disease. “We know that obese people have more fibrosis in their adipose tissue,” he says.
Meanwhile, Scherer—creator of the world’s fattest mouse—continues to probe the role of adiponectin. He notes that unhealthy fat, with lots of inflammation and fibrosis, generates less adiponectin. In the mice, in contrast, a surfeit of the hormone appears to expand their subcutaneous storage capacity. Adiponectin also seems to protect the mice from becoming metabolically unhealthy as they age, Scherer and colleagues reported in eLife this year.

On the human front, Samuel Klein, director of the Nutrition Obesity Research Center at Washington University in St. Louis, runs one of the most exhaustive studies yet. Since 2016, he and colleagues have administered a battery of tests to three groups, for which he’s still recruiting: 45 metabolically healthy obese people, 45 metabolically unhealthy obese people, and 25 lean people. The researchers collect at least one muscle and fat biopsy, take blood samples, infuse insulin to measure how it regulates glucose metabolism in muscle, and more. Participants are randomized to different diets, including a Mediterranean diet and a plant-based diet, to test how each affects metabolism.
Klein says he wants to understand why some people with obesity are “resistant” to its downsides. He’s especially keen to determine whether subcutaneous fat is different in metabolically healthy and unhealthy groups with obesity. In a paper this year, his group reported greater production of fibrous tissue in the fat of a metabolically unhealthy group than in counterparts who are metabolically healthy. Of the questions to be tackled, he says, “It’s endless.”
Still, the science bolsters what plus-size athletes, including weightlifters, dancers, and marathon runners, have long declared: Being fat doesn’t have to mean being unhealthy. “There are people,” as Loos’s data show, “who are genetically predisposed to obesity [and] have low cardiac risk, and that’s pretty interesting,” Bulik says. “They might be able to survive in a larger body” without metabolic ill effects.
But just who is so fortunate isn’t clear. No agreed-on definition of MHO exists, Klein says; anywhere from about 6% to 60% of people qualify. Women, younger people, and those with BMIs under 35 are more likely to meet MHO criteria. Many studies define MHO as having two or fewer features of metabolic syndrome, a constellation of risk factors that boosts the likelihood of cardiovascular disease and diabetes and includes a large waistline, high blood pressure, low HDL (“good”) cholesterol, high triglycerides, and high blood sugar. By another definition—having at most one of six metabolic concerns—roughly 75% of people whose weight qualifies as normal and 32% of people with obesity are metabolically healthy, Klein says.
“Making these decisions isn’t easy,” agrees Matthias Schulze, an epidemiologist who studies risk factors for heart disease and diabetes at the German Institute of Human Nutrition. This year, Schulze and his colleagues proposed a new definition for MHO based on data from two existing cohorts with a range of BMIs, one including about 12,000 U.S. adults and the other, 374,000 U.K. adults. The researchers hit on three key criteria: systolic blood pressure below 130 without medication, no diabetes, and a waist-to-hip ratio of less than 0.95 for women and less than 1.03 for men.
About 40% of the U.S. cohort and 20% of the U.K. cohort met that definition, and over 14 years, those people appeared no more likely to die of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, or other causes than metabolically healthy people of normal weight. (The finding only applied to people with a BMI under 40; above that, risk of death was elevated regardless of metabolic health.) But Schulze’s work pointed to a wrinkle of MHO: In the U.S. group, in which a higher proportion qualified as metabolically healthy, the average age was 41; in the U.K. group it was 56.
The age gap may not be the only explanation for the difference, but it’s a “plausible” contributor, Schulze says—and one supported by other studies. “Most people who are metabolically healthy [and] obese at one point transition to being metabolically unhealthy,” says Frank Hu, co-director in the program of obesity epidemiology and prevention at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. In 2018, Hu, Schulze, and colleagues co-wrote a paper in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology in which they examined outcomes for more than 90,000 women in the Nurses’ Health Study, a decadeslong project that gathers health and other data. The pair and their colleagues found that over 20 years, 84% of women with MHO (defined as having healthy cholesterol and blood pressure levels and no diabetes) became metabolically unhealthy—which, Hu argues, suggests MHO is transient and “not benign.” But he also notes that more than two-thirds of the normal-weight women developed some sort of metabolic issue in that time, too.
Amid that complexity, some are calling for a more nuanced approach to caring for people with obesity, putting greater emphasis on multiple measures of health. “We tend to get hung up on obesity and weight in part because they’re visible,” says David Allison, a prominent obesity researcher and dean of the Indiana University, Bloomington, School of Public Health. “If we walk into a room and shake hands, you see my weight. You don’t see my cholesterol level, you don’t see how much fat is in my liver.”
Clinicians and researchers like Bulik and Vidal-Puig favor focusing less on a person’s BMI and more on cardiac and metabolic markers such as triglycerides and blood pressure. Schulze adds that waist-to-hip ratio, a component of his risk calculator, is something a doctor can measure. One way to strive for a more metabolically healthy body is with movement or exercise, which can improve response to insulin and help clear fat from the liver, even without weight loss, Vidal-Puig says. “It’s not about fat, it’s about being fit. [That’s] what I tell people.”
In Klein’s view, obesity treatments should aim for metabolic improvement as well as weight loss. “If you lose 3% of your body weight” and improve metabolic outcomes, “is that worse than losing 8%” and seeing no such improvement? he asks. “Eight percent would be rewarded, whereas 3% would be, ‘You’re not sticking with the program.’” Klein hastens to add that weight loss may pay off in other ways, by reducing the risk of various health problems. And perhaps partly because of social pressures, many individuals simply prefer to be leaner.
When someone who is fat walks into a doctor’s office for a checkup, Bacon says, “the first thing you should think about … is ‘What kind of advice would I give a thinner person?’” The guidance won’t necessarily be identical—for example, they note, a fat person may encounter stigma a thin person wouldn’t when exercising at a gym. “But I think that, to get away from weight bias, one of the first things people can do is try to take weight out of the picture,” Bacon says, “before they come to consider it.”

A mid- to high-end dishwasher of German engineering and design, Bosch dishwashers have a reputation for being some of the quietest dishwashers on the market. Bosch dishwasher model SHU53C05UC17 sported its controls on the front of the unit, instead of at the top of the door's edge as in other Bosch models. The dishwasher came fitted for under-the-counter placement with an exterior stainless steel door panel. While some problems definitely require a technician's repair, for simpler matters, you can troubleshoot them yourself without a lot of time or expense.
Pump Doesn't Work
Built-in dishwashers from Bosch fit seamlessly in your kitchen as an integrated or fully integrated dishwasher. A mid- to high-end dishwasher of German engineering and design, Bosch dishwashers have a reputation for being some of the quietest dishwashers on the market. Bosch dishwasher model SHU53C05UC17. Bosch brand appliances include items such as washers and dryers, ovens, ranges, microwaves, refrigerators, coffee makers, and dishwashers. Bosch dishwashers include concealed controls and visible control panels and are available in white, black and stainless steel varieties.
When you open your dishwasher only to find the bottom full of water, don't panic just yet. Check the drain line for kinks or twists and untwist them. The drain line runs from the bottom back of the dishwasher and connects directly into the sink's plumbing just above the P-trap underneath the sink. Because the dishwasher drains into the sink's plumbing, when the sink clogs, the dishwasher won't drain. Other issues that affect the pump include a clogged large object trap or filter, clogged sink or air gap.
Large Object Trap Removal
To check the dishwasher's filter, remove the utensil tray to access the large object trap found in the bottom center of the dishwasher just in front of the lower spray arm, surrounded by a square mesh screen. Grab the ring handle and move it a quarter turn counterclockwise to lift the large object trap out of the dishwasher. If it contains debris, turn it upside down and gently tap it until the debris falls out. Clean it by flushing with water. Remove the large mesh filter, clean and replace.
Dishwasher Runs a Long Time
A Bosch dishwasher that runs a long time could indicate a problem with your hot water supply. When there is no hot water, the dishwasher will continue to run. The Bosch dishwasher does have a built-in heater, which serves to increase the water temperature supplied by your hot water line. You can avoid this problem before you wash by turning on the hot water and letting it run until it gets hot. Turn it off and restart your dishwasher. The cycle should complete once the water is hot enough.
Rinse Cycle
A rinse cycle that doesn't activate could indicate a clogged inlet filter. If you have hard water, calcium and magnesium can build up on the inlet filter and affect the water flow to the dishwasher. The inlet filter sits inside the end of the hose connector of the dishwasher's water supply line. The water supply line runs from the hot water valve under the sink to the front of the dishwasher's inlet valve behind the bottom kick panel on its left. Turn off the hot water before you unscrew the hose connection to access the filter.
You'll need a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the screws on the bottom panel on either side of the kick panel to get at the connection. Unscrew the hose counterclockwise, but have a towel ready for water drainage when you pull the hose away. Pop the filter from the hose connector. If it's jammed inside it, use a flat-head screwdriver to get under its lip and lift out the filter. Clean with an abrasive cleaner and a toothbrush to remove mineral buildup. Reinstall in reverse of removal and don't forget to reopen the water valve fully.
Spray Arm
A lower spray arm that doesn't rotate during the wash and rinse cycles usually signifies that food debris could be caught inside it. After removing the bottom tray, remove the lower spray arm by lifting it up from the water supply unit it sits inside, wash and rinse thoroughly and gently pop it back into place. Periodic maintenance and cleaning will keep your Bosch dishwasher in tip-top shape.
Tumblr media
Streaked or Dirty Dishes
Glassware that comes out of the dishwasher streaked suggests that you used too much rinse aid in the dishwasher. Cut back on the amount of rinse aid in the next cycle to see if that fixes the problem. If your dishes don't come clean enough, you may not be using the correct or enough detergent. When utensils block the spray arms, ensure they move freely before starting the wash cycle. If you don't replace the large object trap properly, this can also affect the quality of the wash cycle.
Voluntary Recall
Tumblr media
Bosch dishwasher model number SHU43C05UC17 might have an electrical problem and fire hazard that you cannot troubleshoot, as the manufacturer issued a voluntary recall on Bosch dishwashers beginning with model numbers SHU43C. Visit the manufacturer's website to input your specific model number into the appropriate fields to determine if your Bosch dishwasher was recalled. Contact the manufacturer for more information.

Biomed Grid | Influence of An Age on Organometric Parameters of a Heart at the Antipsychotic Cardiomyopathy
Introduction
As a result of active therapy of both the main mental and concomitant somatic pathology, the life expectancy of mental patients, in particular those suffering from schizophrenia, has increased significantly [1,2] . This process is accompanied by a significant increase in the duration of antipsychotic therapy (APT), thereby significantly lengthening the time of damaging cardiotoxic effects of antipsychotics (AP) on the heart, which is fraught with the development of severe life-threatening iatrogenic pathology - neuroleptic cardiomyopathy (NCMP) [3-6]. In parallel, natural ontogenetic involutional processes develop in the heart [7]. How these two factors interact among themselves and how their joint influence is reflected in a morphologic condition of a heart - this question remains open. In the special literature any information on this problem is not found. According to the modern doctrine of morphology as a science, a merely descriptive method of research is not enough for a correct and objective characteristic of pathologic changes being observed; it is strongly necessary to use objective criteria of functional morphology [8,9] and to be guided by the principle of unity of pathology on various research levels; this principle was postulated by G. G. Avtandilov [9] in the past.
Therefore it seems actual to research a morphofunctional condition of heart in patients with NCMP by use of morphometric research methods which meet modern requirements of the evidence-based medicine [10,11] and allow to objectivize the received results and the made conclusions, because final values of the parameters, which are studied, have the quantitative form and can sufficiently easily be analyzed statistically [8,9]. The aim of the present study is to eliminate - at least, partially - the existing gap by studying the effect of age on macroscopic changes in the heart (organ level of its organization) in patients with NCMP.
Material and Methods
Then autopsy protocols of 140 patients with schizophrenia (83 men and 57 women) who died at the age under 35 years and over 55 years were analyzed. The final diagnosis of each deceased was verified at the autopsy. The criteria of an exception were the expressed signs of a metabolic syndrome (the increased body weight, arterial hypertension, a diabetes mellitus), a chronic pulmonary pathology with hypertension in a small circle of blood circulation, a cachexia. The observations were divided into four groups: I and II were respectively 42 young and 39 elderly patients receiving AP, but had no heart disease and died of non-cardiac causes; groups III and IV included 27 young and 32 elderly patients suffering from NCMP. The following parameters were measured on the macroscopic level: heart mss (m), linear dimensions, perimeter of venous valve openings, and thickness of a wall of ventricles. For analysis of the received data we used an original author’s method what we had developed for such studies [12]. For this analysis the outer volume of heart without atria (V) was determined and two relative parameters (both in percent) were calculated:
1. Cv - coefficient of volume, this coefficient shows a part of the total volume of heart (without atria), and this part falls on the volume of cavities of ventricles.
2. Cl - coefficient of the left ventricle, this coefficient shows the volume size of the left ventricle with respect to the total volume of both ventricles. In addition, two other parameters were calculated which use a gravimetric characteristic of the heart (m): mass-volume ratio (MVR) and index of density of myocardium (IDM).
growth of MVR is evidence of a hypertrophy of myocardium, and its diminution is an indication for dilatation of cavities of heart ventricles. IDM clearly shows a strongly expressed correlation with such objective parameters of microstructure of cardiac muscle as stromal-parenchymatous ratio and rate of interstitial edema [12], which quantitatively describe a condition of its intercellular matrix. Mathematical analysis of the obtained quantitative data included the calculation of such an index as the effect’s size by J. Cohen [13,4], which in quantitative terms determines the effect of the studied factor on a particular object of study [13,15]. It is believed that the inclusion of the Cohen coefficient (d’C) in the mathematical data processing tool strengthens the rigor of the study and gives more weight to the analysis, conclusions and recommendations [16]. The following gradation of d’C is accepted: insignificant - less than 0,20; small - 0,20-0,49; average - 0,50-0,79; big - 0,80 and above [13,15,17]. Negative d’С values indicate the opposite direction of the effect [17]. The obtained quantitative results were processed statistically (computer program “Statistica 6.0”) with the level of significance of differences of 95% and more (p≤0.05). The d’C calculation is performed automatically using a computer calculator [17].
Results and Discussion
The comparison of the studied indices in groups I and II (Table 1) identifies the pronounced and statistically significant ontogenetic changes in four of the six parameters. So, with age m accrues while V though also increases, but only at the level of a trend. Owing to this fact the level of MVR too, although slightly, but still statistically significant, raises. The value of Кv practically does not change, which indicates the absence of the age-related expansion of the cardiac ventricles. On the contrary, the ratio of the ventricular volumes changes with age in favor of the right, as in group II Кl goes down considerably and statistically significantly. In old age IDM also increases significantly. This is not surprising, since it is established that this indicator reflects changes in the extracellular matrix of a myocardium, in particular, the degree of myofibrosis [12], which is often observed during the agerelated involutive processes occurring in a heart muscle [1]. The calculation of d’C in the compared groups I and II (Table 2) shows that the influence of an age factor on such organometric parameters of the heart as m and IDM corresponds to an average degree, on Кv - an insignificant one, and on the others - a small one. The data presented in both tables are fully consistent. In the course of a cardiac remodeling in the development of NCMP (group III and IV) there is a leveling effect of the latter on the severity of ontogenetic shifts of the organometric parameters (Table 1). Very weakly expressed the age-related morphological changes of the heart on the pathological background created by the presence of NCMP are statistically significant only in such an indicator as Кl. This reflects some prevalence of an enlargement of the left ventricle compared to the right one [12].
Table 1:Macroscopic parameters of the heart in the study groups.
Table 2:Cohen’s coefficient (d’C) in the study groups.
The sizes d’C for all compared indicators in groups III and IV (Table 2) are in limits of borders small and insignificant. In other words, the force of the influence of an age on the macroscopic condition of the heart in patients suffering from NCMP is extremely small, and all the identified changes are caused by the development of this iatrogenic pathology. The results of a comparative analysis of the dynamics of indicators in paired groups I-III and II-IV, that is in persons of the same age respectively without NCMP and in the presence of one, once again convincingly confirm the proposed situation. In both pairs of the compared groups, the development of NCMP leads to a marked remodeling of the heart, which is documented by the statistically significant changes in the vast majority of the studied organometric parameters (Table 1). The power of an influence (“the size of effect”) of the development ofNCMP at any age for the vast majority of the studied quantitative indicators is very high (Table 2). This fact proves the crucial importance of NCMP in cardiac remodeling at the organ level of the organization definitively.
Conclusion
Thus, the carried-out analysis of the dynamics of macromorphometric parameters of the heart in the aspect of ontogenesis and the development of NCMP shows the absence of any significant influence of an age factor on the state of the studied organ in the presence of NCMP. Generalizing everything told, it is possible to note that at the development of NCMP in patients of different age the crucial importance in the genesis of various pathological changes of the heart at the organ level of its organization has not an age factor, but the side cardiotoxic effect of AP leading eventually to the development of NCMP.

[x] 12:00 p.m. - Colloquium
“It was demeaning, to borrow a line from the poet A. R. Ammons, to allow one’s Weltanschauung to be noticeably wobbled.”
“You must not fear, hold back, count or be a miser with your thoughts and feelings. It is also true that creation comes from an overflow, so you have to learn to intake, to imbibe, to nourish yourself and not be afraid of fullness. The fullness is like a tidal wave which then carries you, sweeps you into experience and into writing. Permit yourself to flow and overflow, allow for the rise in temperature, all the expansions and intensifications. Something is always born of excess: great art was born of great terrors, great loneliness, great inhibitions, instabilities, and it always balances them. If it seems to you that I move in a world of certitudes, you, par contre, must benefit from the great privilege of youth, which is that you move in a world of mysteries. But both must be ruled by faith.”
Anaïs Nin

“We do not yet know whether Arkys relay Stop decisions from elsewhere, or are actively involved in forming those decisions. This is in part because the input pathways to Arkys remain to be determined.”
These studies prompt an interesting reflection about the benefits and conflicts of labeling and classifying neurons at a relatively grainy level of understanding.
“The authors hypothesize that under normal conditions, hLTP serves an adaptive, homeostatic role to maintain a healthy balance between the hyperdirect and indirect pathway in the STN. However, after dopamine depletion, pathologically elevated cortical input to the STN triggers excessive induction of hLTP at GPe synapses, which becomes maladaptive to circuit function and contributes to or even exacerbates pathological oscillations.”

Lesson 11 - Behavior and Environment, animals must be housed in an environment enriched to maximize their welfare.
Lesson 12 - Rodent and Lagomorph Accommodation and Housing - A more comprehensive guide from the macro environment, facilities i.e. establishments, to the micro environments.  Covers health and safety procedures for personnel as well as geometry of housing units (rounded edges to prevent water accumulation).  Absolutely essential.
Lesson 13 - Collecting Samples and Administrating Procedures - covers the most common collection techniques and materials collected and stressed the importance of doing as little harm as possible to the animal.
Lesson 14 - Transporting the Animal : Shipper holds most of the responsibility.  Major goals are making sure the journey is as stress free as possible, contingency plans are in place, and that all of the logistics have been carefully planned, communicated, and coordinated between various parties responsible in the shipping.  Also, animals should be prepared mentally and physically for the journey and should have a period of post-transportation to adjust to the new surroundings and environment.  A number of practical issues must be considered such as temperature, availability of food, and access to animals during the journey.  Boxes should be properly labelled in whatever languages are necessary.
Lesson 15 - The purpose of feeding and nutrition is to meet the energy needs of the animals, which vary by species, physiological state of animal (growth, maintenance, gestation, and lactation).  A number of category of diets exist as well as a variety of specific diets to best fits the needs of the experiment.  This chapter covers particulars of nutrition requirements and stresses the importance of avoiding obesity and malnutrition.
Lesson 16 - Anatomy and Physiology of Teleosts (Skip for now: Focus on Rodents and Lagomorphs)
Lesson 17 - Anatomy and Physiology of Rodents and Lagomorphs - General characteristics of the anatomy and physiology of six species, 5 rodents and 1 lagomorph.  Mice, rats, guinea pigs, gerbils, and hamsters.  Rabbits.  It covers particularities of each species and has a quiz asking specific facts, mostly centered on commonalities and distinguishing factors.  Worth a close read.
Lesson 18 - Anaesthesia and Analgesia in Rodents and Lagomorphs . Pre anaesthesia techniques, drug combinations, and repeated warning of the importance of choosing the right drugs and technique for the species.  Use of a chamber.  Methods of anesthesia (IP, IV, Volatile).  Endotracheal Intubation for rabbits; the proper use and administration of analgesics; monitoring during the operation (for example - the paw pain reflex disappears in medium to deep anesthesia
Lesson 19 - Animal Welfare and Signs of Disturbance - This chapter repeatedly stresses the importance of the relationship between the caretaker and the animal.  It repeats the ideal social, environmental, and nutritional environments for rodents and rabbits and highlights peculiarities of each species.   After reading this one should be better suited to detecting stress, disease, or other ailments in a laboratory animal.
Lesson 20 - Fish Psychology and Welfare (Skip for now: Focus on Rodents and Lagomorphs)
Lessons 5, 17, and 20 pertain to fish

Finally, it is time to publish and reveal the results. According to Santiago Ramón y Cajal, scientific writers should govern themselves by the following rules:
Make sure you have something to say; Find a suitable title and sequence to present your ideas; Say it; Stop once it is said.

Execute beautifully… Ask --- et. al.  What does ideal execution look like
Extra time: allocate time.  Technicians : Freedom to do other things, work with other things, other technical things, giving people independent project to carry out.    Project --- has in mind?  Design.   Hands on education of how science works then reading.   Spend time focused on a problem and in the ideal become the world’s foremost expert on whatever ‘mundane’ aspect of what ever problem you are working on.
Computational in the context of a problem.  Learn to use.   Defining “problems I want to solve.”   As an operating scientist, the technology can change very quickly.   Capable of learning, understanding, and applying.

Domain bias.   In general -> other than P.I. protected from funding.  Publication, the life of the business.   Metric of success is the science they publish.    Work that contributes to being an author = more engaged, more independent.   Evolved to an independent project.
So incredibly broad -> CRISPR, GFP, Optogenetics, with higher level systems problems.   100 years = absurd.   Look back -> Could we have conceived whats going on today.
Foremost expert on something how-ever limited.  Grow from there.   Grown from a particular expertise.
Molecular biologist || Do what a 3 year old is taught to do.  How?  How?  How?  How does that work.  Quantum physics.   Ask questions.  Be open.
Go to seminars  -> Go to every talk.  Take every note.  Primary literature fundamentally different.   Always learn in context.  Don’t dilute too much (ignore title, abstract, discussion).  Look at figures and tables and derive for yourself what they say.   Look for THE FIGURE or THE TABLE that is the crux and look for the control experiment.    Understand the critical assessment, are the facts valid and warranted?  Infinite amount to learn, don’t spread yourself infinitely thin.  “

Author’s Note: So, I’ve been busy at work at this chapter! It’s pretty long (my longest yet for anything) and it’s very painful. It ends (kind of??) in a cliffhanger so DUN DUN DUN.
I have even more angst than this planned.
But also know I cried while writing this because this is a subject very personal to me because I’ve experienced this kind of pain in my own life a few times before.
Shoutout to @ruth-hamilton-delrio for being ‘Ruth’ and @linslovelylocks for watching me write some of this last night and giving me the name ‘Sarah’ to use for this

That night, the curtain of sleep never came. You stayed in bed, your eyes glued to your ceiling, watching dancing lights out on the road create shapes. Your eyes rolled over to check your phone every few minutes, hoping it would light up with his name.
It didn’t. As each hour passed, you grew increasingly upset at how little you did to stop him and how much you had actually done to convince him to go. He had expressed his disinterest in heading out on the date several times, but you had waved it off, telling him to have fun and let loose. You hadn’t given a second thought to him actually enjoying this mystery girl or wanting to spend another night with her.
At the clock ticked past the 2:00 in the morning hour, you heard your phone ding with a text. Having grown tired of it all, you were sighing as you reached your hand over to pick it up. The display appeared in front of your face and a soft smile came as you saw his name.
From: Dork Extraordinaire
Just got home. Had a great time. Call me?
Wincing, you let yourself consider the options: pretend to be asleep or call him and listen to him rave about the girl. Your finger hovered over the call button and you felt your grip on your phone slip, causing you to accidentally hit the button.
“Shit,” you whispered into the darkness, fumbling to press end, but not quick enough because you heard Lin’s voice.
“Hey! I thought you’d be sleeping.” He said and you smiled at the cheerful tone. His voice was one to match with the picture of a man clicking his heels in the air as he danced in a musical.
“You woke me up,” You fed him a lie, but hoped it would fit with the grogginess of your voice.
“Sorry, but I needed to talk to someone and I only know one person I wanted to tell.” He replied, his smile audible through his tone. You started to nod, but remembered he couldn’t see you.
“So, tell me about her.” You said, fighting off the sleep you wanted to give in to. Why it hadn’t come until now, when you needed to be alert, you weren’t sure.
He laughed before continuing, “Just, she’s great. We didn’t have one dull moment of conversation the entire time. She got what I was talking about – like her interests synced up to mine and it felt extraordinary. And she had this amazing laugh and it sounded like music. And her smile is like staring into the sun – it’s too beautiful, you have to take breaks from it, even though you really don’t want to.”
You drifted off into your thoughts as he spoke, wishing you could tell him you thought that of him. That you always had, that you always would. That when you looked into his eyes, you felt safe and comfortable. That when he hugged you, you never wanted to let go because he was the closest you got to home these days. That when he smiled at you, you felt like you could have floated up to the clouds.
He continued to speak and you just listened as all his words began to blur together, none of them standing out until the last sentence.
“I’m going to see her again.”
These drew you out of your fog and you came out stumbling over your words, “Wait… Lin, are- are you sure?” You hoped he wasn’t.
“(Y/N), have you been listening to me? She’s perfect. Of course, I’m sure!” His enthusiasm leaked through your phone and made an involuntary frown replace your facial features. Lin never went on second dates. Lin never met perfect girls. Lin never said anyone was perfect except for you. Now he was using your word to describe a girl he was going on a second date with. You felt as if you had been placed into an alternate dimension where nothing made sense and everything was opposite of the truth.
You sighed, “As long as you’re happy, Lin.”
“Thank you. For being so supportive. And for giving me the confidence to go out with her. My life may have just changed because of the chance I took, or that you told me to take.” He told you and you scowled, fighting back a curse word. Of course it was your fault. It was always your fault when you ruined your own life. You did it often and you knew how to deal with it, but nothing had felt quite this devastating before.
But you had to hide all of this from Lin because his joy was truly first in your priorities. Fighting to bite your tongue and hold back your comments, you joked back to him.
“You’ll be getting charged for my services on your next credit card statement.” You heard his chuckle and grinned at how you succeeded in covering up your feelings. It shouldn’t surprise you, really, because you’d become quite the expert at it.
“Well, it’s late and I should be getting to sleep.” Lin told you, causing you to glance at your bedside alarm.
“Shit, Lin. It’s three in the morning and I have to be at the hospital by six!” Your exclamation was followed by Lin’s laugh, the sound dancing in your ear.
“So, are you going back to sleep or going straight to the hospital?” He asked you and you groaned, calculating the times in your mind.
“Let’s see, a shower and coffee and getting dressed would take one hour, tops. If I went back to sleep right this second, I could get an hour and a half or two of sleep and still make it to the hospital on time at six.”
“You’re the only person I know who would do that math in her head.” Lin retorted back, accenting his remark with a short, one-beat chuckle.
“Shut up, nerd.” You kidded back, laughing but relishing in the normalcy of this – a late-night phone call and jokes at each other’s expense. These were the conversations that had dotted your timeline of friendship – when you could forget the time and be stuck in between a day and the next, in a time lapse. There were no worries in the void, you told him one night, there were only stories.
You heard him yawn and suppressed a giggle, “Are you tired, Lin?”
He only gave another yawn in response, this one shorter, “I believe so.”
You felt a shy smile come to your face and answered, “Goodnight then, cool kid.”
“Goodnight, girl wonder.” He told you and you heard the click of him hanging up far before you’d had time to absorb the process.
You took the phone down from your face, stuck in the middle of shock and disappointment, and laid back down in your bed. Directly in your eyesight, sitting on your bedside table, was a framed photograph. You reached a hand out to grasp it and pulled it towards you, marveling at how carefree the two beings in the photo were. You, caught in the middle of a laugh, the true essence of your youth traced onto your face and a glow that surrounded you. Lin, his arms around you tight, the sensation of the day still etched into your memory. It had been taken when you’d gotten your acceptance letter to medical school – and not just any one, but your dream school. Lin, as exuberant as you had been, had cried with you. In the photograph, your letter was still in your hands as you returned Lin’s hug. In that moment, it looked like you would never separate. You never wanted to.
How you wished things had never changed. How you wished you had never grown up.
___________________
The next few days passed in a blur – an overlapping rush of patients, calls from Lin, and sleep. You entered every surgery with your mind on him and left each one with your mind on his mystery girl. On a Friday morning, as you entered the OR to fix a broken heart valve, your mind traced its way back to a particularly favorable night as your hands moved by themselves, repairing and stitching on their own.
“Have you ever noticed how much stars are like human beings?” You pondered aloud, your voice barely breaking a whisper, but he heard you. He always did. You felt Lin’s body shift beside you and his voice reached you a second later.
“No, I haven’t, but why don’t you tell me about it?” He told you, giving you the space you needed to talk about your passion.
“We’re all so different. But we’re all the same thing – we’re all just humans. We make mistakes, we make presumptions, we fuck stuff up. But we’re all trying and we’re all beautiful because of that. We’re beautiful because of our mistakes. We learn from what we didn’t know. We love, we live, and we break. Sometimes we’re on fire and other times we’re caught in the pouring rain. Sometimes we’re shooting stars and sometimes we’re dying stars. But, for one shining moment, we’re all someone’s favorite. At some point, there’s someone who can say they love us. They can point at us, pick us out, and love us. And being loved makes us a better person, makes us shine brighter, because we want to be better. It takes another person to drag it out of us, but we all want to be better.” You paused, taking a deep breath, your eyes locked onto the twinkling sky that shined down on you.
By way of a reply, Lin moved his arm, taking an awkward to slide it around you, pulling you closer to his side. You leaned towards him, into the side-hug, into your safe place in his arms. You curled your head up onto his chest, the rising and falling of his chest timed with your own. When he whispered, his breath blew your hair slightly.
“Your mind is beautiful. You know that, right?”
You felt yourself revel in the beauty of this moment – mid-summer, out of the city. Lin had picked you up two hours ago and had asked you for a destination, trying to tear you away from preparing for medical school. You had sighed, about to start an argument, when you remembered the perfect place. You had directed him to drive off the highway, onto a dirt road. He’d parked and you’d taken off through the freshly cut field. The smell of grass surrounded you as the sun warmed your veins. As night fell, you and Lin had laid down in the field, your eyes cast upward, losing yourself in the wonder of the universe. You felt small and safe as he silently calmed you.
You were thrown back into the present when Lin’s arm dropped off of you, your body suddenly colder without his warmth under the night sky. It was then you tilted your head up to glance at him, finding him asleep. His breathing was mesmerizing. His face was young without the etched in lines of exhaustion and you marveled in how handsome he was. You’d never seen him that way before. He’d always been Lin to you. When other girls talked about him, you just shook your head, letting it slide past you without further commentary. But it was now, with the pale glow of the moon reflecting onto his face, that you realized what they meant. His hair was brushed back, but refused to conform – it fell into his face and your fingers itched to push it back. His skin was aglow in the wash of contentment and rest.
You spent the rest of the night memorizing the lines of him, the way he curved and moved and fit together. For that night, the beauty in the sky had been forgotten as you realized the beauty in the man. He was the star to your vast sky. Without him, you didn’t shine.
And you stayed there with him until the sun came up. As you waited for the sun to curve over the horizon, you felt your weariness kicking in. Your mind falling into the void of sleep, you whispered three words. You weren’t sure how you meant them, but you felt sure he hadn’t heard you. Not giving it another thought, you were asleep a moment later.
But he had heard you. He’d heard your three words. And as he watched you fall asleep, his grip around your body had tightened. He secured you – a silent promise that you would always be his.
This memory swelled in your head for the hours the surgery took up. After slipping out of the OR and out of your dirty scrubs and dressing, you were walking briskly down the hall to the locker room to change back into your street clothes. Just as you reached the door to the area, you almost ran into another surgeon your recognized from seeing him around during your shifts.
“Oh, hey. Sorry.” You mumbled to him, trying to push past to relieve yourself from the stresses of the day. You’d lost a kid on the table during a transplant earlier and it was riding heavy on your shoulders. All you wanted was to go home and drink cheap wine and collapse into your bed and try your hardest not to think about Lin. But the surgeon had another plan.
“Hey. I’ve been meaning to catch you around.” He remarked and you resisted the urge to roll your eyes.
“I’ve been busy.” You told him, your patience already wearing thin.
He gave you a goofy smile, his mouth curving up slightly at only one end, “I’ve been looking to ask you out.”
And that went exactly where you thought it was. You sighed, shifting your weight, before glaring back up at him.
“Put your number in the pile with the others who wish I’d call them back and we’ll see if I get to you.” Your voice was cold and measured, your anger seeping into your tone. You watched as he backed off and began to walk away. You rolled your eyes for real when he stopped and turned back to you.
“You know, you women doctors think you’re so high and mighty, but you don’t get the right to act like a bitch. It’s not like I meant it anyway.” He countered before giving a rough shake of his head and leaving for real this time. You almost burst your anger bubble and shouted down the hall at him, but thought better of it. Best not to add any gas to that fire. You’d heard the oppositions of men several times – through medical school and your residency and even when it was announced you’d gotten this job on your first try. You wanted desperately to say it was getting better – that maybe someday soon men wouldn’t feel threatened by a woman in power – but you knew it wasn’t the truth.
Turning away from the confrontation, you pushed open the locker room door with your shoulder and stepped inside. You were greeted with the hums of the vending machines and the soft, muffled voice of the world’s newest pop star. You grinned, knowing exactly the only person who would listen to that music here.
“Sarah!” You shouted, rounding the corner of a bank of lockers. Your friend looked startled, but quickly took her headphones off and leapt up to give you a hurried hug.
“Where have you been, (Y/N)?” She asked, sitting back down and continuing to pack up her bag. You sighed, turning towards your locker to dial the lock and open it. The door popped open and you began to hang up your white coat and stuffing your phone and wallet into your purse. You took the appearance of being busy as a way not to answer Sarah’s question until you heard her cough. You turned around, your eyebrows raised in a question.
“That bad, huh?” Sarah asked, chuckling under her breath as she zipped up her bag, tossing it over her shoulder.
“Considering some guy just tried to ask me out and then called me a bitch when I turned him down? Lin suddenly has a girlfriend or something and just ignores my existence now? My parents are visiting tomorrow and I know they’ll just stress me the hell out? Yeah, that bad.” You gave a stronger sigh as you slammed your locker door shut. About to lock it up, Sarah stepped forward, taking the lock from your hand.
“Nuh uh, we’re not just going home separately and drinking wine. We’re going out. And I know you keep a cute outfit in your locker.” She was grinning as she talked and your exhaustion whined, wishing you wouldn’t give in.
You didn’t listen. You never did.
“Fine. But I pick the bar. Last time you picked, we ended up at a honky tonk wearing cowboy hats and doing something called the boot scootin’ boogie.” She laughed as you plucked clothes off the top shelf of your locker. She recounted her day to you, not daring a look, as you stripped down and changed. You emerged some few minutes later and she gave you a once-over. You didn’t need the confidence from a compliment – you knew your favorite jeans fit perfectly and your tank top and faux-leather jacket complimented both your personality and your carefreeness.
You and Sarah left the hospital and kept walking until you arrived at a hole-in-the-wall bar, one you frequented after hard nights when home didn’t promise you enough comfort. As you both sat down at the bar, you waved the bartender over as Sarah’s stories continued. You ordered Sarah’s favorite drink and got yourself a whiskey. When the drinks arrived, Sarah paused.
“And you didn’t want to go to a country bar.” She quipped, taking her first sip.
You laughed, “What? You can’t drink whiskey away from the country?”
You could tell she was about to counter and waited for it, but instead her eyes narrowed and she began to frown at something happening over your shoulder. You tried to turn around, but her hand came to your shoulder, stopping you.
“Uh, better not do that.” She told you, not trying to cover up the event unfolding behind you.
“Why not?” You asked nonchalantly, taking another sip of your drink. Best to appear calm.
She grimaced, “Lin. And the girl.”
Her answer changed your night in a second. You set your drink down with a calculated fury, trying to avoid slamming the glass. You felt your veins heating up as you watched your life happen in slow motion. You turned around now, catching a glimpse. His hand on the small of her back, her head curved towards his, the grin playing out on his face at whatever she had whispered into his ear. You watched her long hair swishing against his hand, her earrings sparkling in the dim light of the room. With every beat of their affection, you grew warmer. Her jeans hit her curves with accentuated them, his hips swinging with each step they took in sync. You felt Sarah try to pull you away from the scene, but it was like a car crash – addicting to watch, almost pleasurable, the risk of hurting yourself too. You felt yourself sinking into your anger, your jealousy, all at once. And then it happened.
They passed directly by where you sat and, while she may not have noticed, you saw Lin’s eyes widen when he saw you. You didn’t give yourself another second to think, flashing him a sarcastic smirk. Time seemed to slow down as you watched his face and how he tried to separate himself from the woman who clung onto him.
You heard him try to get your name from his mouth, stuttering the first two times. Against your better judgement, you decided to save him. You hopped down from your barstool, Sarah’s exasperated sigh reverberating in your ear as you strode up to him.
“Lin.” You said, simply, and his eyes finally met yours, a blatant mix of hurt, embarrassment, and shock. He jumped up from where he had sat down and the woman’s eyes went from you to him, trying in vain to make the connection.
He noticed her confusion and grinned down at her, “Ruth, this is my best friend, (Y/N).”
She stood, extending a hand clad in rings to you. You shook it firmly, giving her your best fake grin. “Nice to meet you, Ruth. I’ve heard so much about you.”
Ruth swept her arm out, inviting you to sit, “Come on, have a drink with us! There’s so much you have to tell me about this one.” She turned to Lin then, grinning up at his face. You took the invite, sitting down across from the happy couple, your fake smile still stuck on your face. You turned your gaze to Lin, smirking and raising your eyebrows, completing your gesture with a shrug. He rolled his eyes, tossing his arm over Ruth’s shoulders, pulling her closer to him. She snuggled into his side and you found it harder to keep your smile.
This was going to be a lot harder than you thought. It was also going to require a lot more drinks.

“Now I’ve Got You, You SOB”
I was in a training class for work for the past few days, and the instructor mentioned Eric Berne’s book Games People Play, a psychology book about people playing dysfunctional games in their day-to-day interactions with each other. One of the “games” described in the book, that my teacher said was the most interesting to her, was called “Now I’ve Got You, You Son of a Bitch,” where someone with anger issues waits for you to make a mistake and then uses it as the jumping off point for blowing it up into a larger conflict where they can turn it to extensive personal criticisms of your whole mindset and way of life (here’s the original short description of the game from Eric Berne):
“White needed some plumbing fixtures installed, and he reviewed the costs very carefully with the plumber before giving him a go-ahead. The price was set, and it was agreed that there would be no extras. When the plumber submitted his bill, he included a few dollars extra for an unexpected valve that had to be installed – about four dollars on a four-hundred-dollar job. White became infuriated, called the plumber on the phone and demanded an explanation. The plumber would not back down. White wrote him a long letter criticizing his integrity and ethics and refused to pay the bill until the extra charge was withdrawn. The plumber finally gave in.
“It soon became obvious that both White and the plumber were playing games. … Since White had the plumber’s word, the plumber was clearly in the wrong. White now felt justified in venting almost unlimited rage against him. Instead of merely negotiating in a dignified way that befitted the Adult standards he set for himself, perhaps with a little innocent annoyance, White took the opportunity to make extensive criticisms of the plumber’s whole way of living… White was exploiting his trivial but socially defensible objection (position) to vent the pent-up furies of many years on his cozening opponent …”
I’ve known two people in my life who liked to play the “gotcha” game. One was a former boss. She was supposed to be a lead analyst, but it was clear that what she really wanted was to be an investigator, because instead of doing neutral, non-adversarial, information-gathering interviews like we were supposed to, instead she would ask interviewees a bunch of leading questions to try to catch them making minor mistakes and then ream them and their entire organization for it. Her favorite thing was to lead a campaign to try to get someone fired for whatever small mistakes she found, or harass them into quitting. Eventually she turned that behavior on me, and wound up getting fired herself for the abusive behavior.
The other person is a friend’s partner who appears to be very controlling and emotionally/verbally abusive. She posted online about how a contractor didn’t do a job the way she wanted, and then she was asking all her friends to help her start a campaign of vengeance where she would completely ruin the contractor’s reputation and destroy their ability to do any business in the future. Another time she was gleefully vaguebooking about how she was about to catch someone in a lie, and she loved to see people walk themselves into that trap with her (clearly, so she could get them at a moral disadvantage and then vent her rage on them). She did enough posts like that to make it clear this was a pattern with her. I think she also sets her partner up to deliberately put him in situations where he’ll make mistakes, so she can yell at him.
I think it’s a really common game for people with abusive personalities to play, because if they can find some minor error to latch onto, it makes them feel morally justified for their abusive behavior. This blog post also had a good explanation of how the game works:
Eric Berne, the great euhemerus of Transactional Analysis and originator of social game theory, observed that most people would not be able to tolerate continuous intimacy. Therefore, rituals, activities, pastimes, games, and even withdrawal serve a useful social purpose, at times. It is the addictive compulsion to rely upon the drama triangle of social games, due to an underdeveloped or damaged capacity for intimacy, which threatens the quality of our personal relationships, and it is the awareness of the existence of a choice that defines autonomy.
He identified somewhere around thirty different TA games in his famous book Games People Play, which he first published in 1964.  In the decades since Games was published, other TA specialists have identified many more. Yet to this day, two of the most widely-played games continue to be NIGYSOB (an acronym for “Now I’ve got you, you son of a bitch”), and Kick  Me.
NIGYSOB
NIGYSOB is perhaps the easier of the two games to spot. It is an entrapment game, played by people for whom anger is an important, recurring feeling. This anger may be demonstrated in obvious ways, or it may be submerged. It may build up slowly, or it may build up quickly and violently. But no matter what its depth, or how quickly it builds up, it is always released when a NIGYSOB player sets up other people to do something that enables him to justify yelling at them, and to thus relieve the anger that he has built up in himself (and to feel “better,” or less frustrated, as a result).
In business, NIGYSOB players tend to select people to play with who are in positions of lesser authority and who have little or no obvious interest in resisting entrapment. At home, the stronger of the two spouses usually chooses the weaker spouse to play NIGYSOB with, and mothers and fathers usually select their own sons and daughters.
Occasionally, the opening move in a game of NIGYSOB may be one of the traditional “Isn’t it true that…?” variety – the types of questions used so often by hostile lawyers, TV interviewers, and reporters to entrap their witnesses, guests, and the people who they are interviewing. But more often than not, the opening move in a game of NIGYSOB will be even less obvious – perhaps, for example, some innocuous-sounding statement of fact, like, “I thought you were going to…,” a statement that is equally, if not even more effective, in luring the other person into a trap when he responds “incorrectly.”
Every NIGYSOB player needs a person to play with, and most players need a person with enough skill and experience to help them maintain the forward momentum of the games that they play. Games are always preprogrammed. Each move is always followed by a expected response – a complementary, hoped-for response provided by the next player that challenges or answers the first player in a way that permits the first player to still remain in the game. Without this sort of unconscious help, the first player would often be at a loss as to what to say or do next …
Another model of NIGYSOB behavior to me is actually Jehovah, in the Hebrew Bible! Jehovah is basically an asshole. He sets up rules that people can never completely follow or live up to, and then sends down fire and brimstone on them when they fail. And all the while he gets to stay on the moral high ground, and portray himself as the long-suffering, ever-loving god-father who only wants to do good things for his children - if only they would obey him and be sufficiently loyal! Jehovah is basically the model of a controlling, dictatorial abuser …
Of course, the big question with a “Gotcha”-playing abusive personality is how to deal with them. My strategy with both the ones I’ve known has been just minimizing how much contact I had with them, once I got a sense of what their games were. As Berne says, “In everyday life, business dealings with NIGYSOB players are always calculated risks.” Translation: These people suck to deal with, so avoid dealing with them if you can. Other than that, all Berne suggests is basically that you try never to let these people catch you making a mistake if you have to deal with them. But good luck with that, since the abuser’s game revolves around catching you, and they will inevitably come up with something no matter how correct your behavior, or they’ll just store up extra anger over having failed to find a mistake and it’ll be all the worse the next time they find one …

11 of the most common errors made in the refurbishment of the apartment
The renovation of a house or an apartment can be difficult. Cleaning up the rubble, the mess, the dirt, the dust, the unexpected makes the day’s work of a true chaos in the lives of any resident. And a lot of the time, this reform is inevitable and must be considered to ensure the safety and well-being of those who live in the place. For this reason, care must be taken to minimize any pain in your head that the break-the break can cause. From choosing the right colors of the walls, measure the room to know the size of the furniture to the contract, the equipment, and with the consent of the city, some of the errinhos seem silly, but it can create confusion for the reform of the also result in the unnecessary expenditure of material, manpower, and time.
A lack of planning
To start a project without having a project that is set to an error very grave, and as amazing as it may seem, is very common, when building or refurbishing a house or an apartment. Those who do not plan to ever run the risk of having the job and spending twice as much. The ideal is to know what you want to change, to reform and to move into the property, you can expect your expenses to search for the necessary materials, and qualified personnel, to verify the cash balance available to spend, and make a timeline of the reforms.
A good design is not a mere formality but, rather, a kind of insurance against the unexpected in the middle of the road. It goes on to detail all of the items that are required for the intervention is constructive in what you want to do it, and decrease the likelihood that you will get a nasty surprise.
Not be allowed in the common areas and/or in the city
Depending on how much of your retirement you will need both a permit from your condominium to the city hall of the city.
You must pay attention to the rules agreed upon by the joint owners if you wish, especially, to change the facade of the building. For example, many of the buildings have rules for the closing of a private balcony. In addition, you must adhere to the days and times permitted to work, to keep the common areas clean, and abide by the time limit set for the storage areas in the garage.
Now, from the outside of a building, the rules that are in the hall. If the intention is to extend the built-up area, it will be necessary for a Project of Legal reform, with the extension approved by the authority. Each municipality has its own rules, so check with the zoning department of your city to obtain such a permit. In the city of Sao Paulo and provides a Guide to the Licensing of the Designs for all of its inhabitants, who want to build or renovate in the city.
In addition, once the cave-ins that took place in Rio de Janeiro, in 2012-for the sake of the works are uneven, has been built to a standard which regulates all the works of the reformation. In accordance with the regulations of the Reform of the ABNT NBR 16.280:by 2015, the whole work of the reformation that the change in the property has to have its design approved for the building, with the presentation of the RRT (Registry of Technical Responsibility), and by the architect responsible for the project.
According to the Council of Architecture and Urbanism of Brazil (CAU/BR), the activities that may be undertaken by a suitably qualified professional are:
• The construction or demolition of walls and partitions
• Replacement of floor coverings (floors, walls, ceilings)
• The opening or closing of the openings
• A change in the electrical installations, hydraulic and sanitary
The installation of the furniture, fixed
The use of unsuitable materials
The floors polished, and the slip-on indoor and outdoor; wood flooring, without the proper treatment, in wet areas, use a carpet on the bathroom floor or in the wall material of questionable quality just to save money. These are some of the mistakes that can happen, usually due to lack of technical know-how, and tend to compromise the safety and security of its people, and for the life of the building, and, also, generate extra costs and a delay in the completion of the project.
The supply of the coating, and the finish is immense, but the love of a material it is not enough to want to use it. Take a look at its functionality within the context in which it will be used. Why it is important to consult with a professional. He’s going to help you select the right material for every environment.
Purchase of material is insufficient
Mistake in the calculation of the quantity of material required is fairly common, and it can create pain in the head and be cruel to you. In the case of the covering (porcelain tiles, glazed tiles, ceramics, etc.), this mistake may require the purchase of a product from different batches, which often differ in tone and/or size. There are many cases that the product is out of line, and there is more and more difficult to fix the problem. Other materials can also be broken at the time of repair and in need of replacement. In order to avoid such a lack of material, the ideal is to be based on the calculation of the design of the building. In the case of ceramic tiles and porcelain tiles, for example, to calculate the area to be covered, after the removal of the doors and the windows, if that is the case, and, for a margin of safety, to purchase up to 10% more for the product. The same is true for the mind.
Forget about all the wiring and plumbing
Imagine that you disorder and you have to break through the wall, or doing an install, and indeed put in more outlets, or more of the valves. Put the plugs in the least, or put them in the wrong places and is very common, as not to think of how many bulbs are required in each room or where you want to install the light fixtures.
Manage the part that is shown on your real estate property is always more interesting to paint a wall, change the flooring, change the tiles, and so on. But if you forget about all of that hidden under the floor, and on the inside of the wall, it can cause severe pain in the head. A good project for electrical and plumbing, carried out in accordance with the standards for the safety and well-sized, are essential for the comfort and safety of the residents.
For this reason, the ideal situation is to set up the project with the architect or the person responsible for it according to your needs, including a made on a site-specific drivers of the intensity of the light is split, and the piping for the air-conditioning, and hot water in the kitchen and the bathroom.
To accumulate the trash, and forgetting to schedule the removal of debris
Know what I would do with the debris that accumulated at the end of the day, it is also important, especially if your retirement is in a gated community, as you may end up generating a fine for the mess and the dirt are caused.
At this point in time, it is interesting to choose a professional in the workforce, to be responsible for the maintenance of order in the place. In addition, provide for laundry detergents, cloths, floors and others with products and tools that can help them.
The problems with sizing
Get the dimensions of the spaces and this is another mistake that is quite common in those who reform. And, in a number of instances, people make mistakes when investing in real estate a very big affect on the circulation in the atmosphere. For this reason, all rooms should be to have your ‘layouts’ are defined in advance, and aiming at the harmony between the space and the objects within it.
In addition to this, there is the question of the mix of materials and textures. It is normal for the furniture to be purchased on the day and finishes on another. Then, when all the elements are put together, it can happen to you when things don’t match up to each other.
Before you buy mobile big easy chairs, bookshelves and tables, or household appliances, such as refrigerator, washing machine, dishwasher or stove, be sure to measure the size of the door to the apartment and to the elevators. Also make sure that the part you have to go through the bends or very narrow aisles.
To choose the trader is wrong
Before you hire an engineer or an architect, make sure he has it because of a license to practice. For the first one, you can search for your registration at the CREA (Regional Council of Engineering and Agronomy), and in the second, the AUC (the Council of Architecture and Urban planning). Also, look for references on their work and ask them to see the projects completed or in progress. The healthcare professional may recommend that the staff of the works that you will need, such as the master builder and the builders. Otherwise, you will also look for a professional with good references and you are qualified to get the job done.
Choose from the paint, without testing the color of the environment in the light of the day
The tone is always composed of a number of pigments and, therefore, when applied on the wall may be different from what is expected. The ideal time is before you go out buying dozens of gallons of paint, try to color in one square metre, wait for it to dry and see the results in the light of the day and by artificial light. In approving the result, go ahead with the painting.
The floor, no trim
A small detail that can easily be overlooked is the trim on the floor that leads the water to the drain. The result is that the puddles and the flooded areas that build up in the bathroom, in the kitchen or on the terraces and in the garden. A professional in charge of the work shall verify the need for these trims. And don’t dismiss the importance of this: if, by some chance, any of your bathrooms have standing, then the only way to resolve it is to break down everything and re-do!
The water that seeps out of the window
Another small detail, but it is not less important, is to seal your home to prevent leaks. Remember that the opening between the frame and the wall? Not even noticed, have you? But, at the time of the installation, a lot of people forget to pass by the silicone structural post between the window and the bricks and mortar, which over time, causes the infiltration of rain and it’s all across the wall.

Porsche's 8 goals for the 2020 911
https://bestcaritems.com/?p=7219&utm_source=SocialAutoPoster&utm_medium=Social&utm_campaign=Tumblr Automakers often use focus groups made up of current owners to help them develop the next model of any given vehicle. They want to know what works and what doesn’t, so they “clinic it.”Porsche didn’t bother with that for the 992-generation 911. Motor Authority spoke with August Achleitner, vice president of the 911 and 718 product lines, about what Porsche’s goals were for the 2020 911. “Mr. 911,” as he is known, told us that the company already knew from feedback from owners what it wanted to work on, what the weak points were, and what changes needed to be made due to legal requirements around the world. However, Achleitner was clear on Porsche’s main goal. “When we launch a new 911, it’s a very simple goal. A new 911 has to be better than the old one,” he said. Achleitner got more specific and shared the eight things Porsche wanted to improve on the 2020 911: 2020 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S, Valencia, Spain, January 2019 1) Improve dynamics. “How can we improve the vehicle dynamics again after the big step with the 991 in comparison to the 997 before?,” Achleitner asked rhetorically. One answer was making the car wider. Both the S and 4S models are now wide-body cars, which means the S model gained 1.5 inches of rear track. Up front, both models are wider by 1.8 inches, too. “With a wider track in front and rear, the vehicle dynamics came to a new level,” Achleitner said. The wider track improves traction and lets the rear axle build up more stability. The adjustable adaptive dampers were also updated with new hardware and software. In their firm setting they are now firmer than in the 991-generation car. Porsche says that improves roll stability, steering response, and cornering grip. In my first drive review of the 2020 Porsche 911, I was amazed that Porsche managed to make a brilliant car handle even better. But Porsche did something else to improve the dynamics, and that’s the next point. 2020 Porsche 911 Carrera 2) Enlarge the diameter of the rear wheels. Calculations and simulations showed that enlarging the diameter of the rear wheels would improve dynamics even though it would also add weight. The 2020 Porsche 911 S and 4S now ride on 21-inch wheels at the rear and 20s up front, though the tire sizes haven’t changed at 305/30 rear and 245/35 up front. While this influenced all of the surrounding areas of the suspension and the packaging of the car, Porsche felt it was worth the effort because it would make the handling more neutral and controllable. The company had experience with the practice as the 918 Spider and GT2 and GT3 cars already use staggered wheel sizes, and there are no better handling Porsches than those. Handling becomes more neutral because the bigger rear wheels provide greater rear end stability and grip without having to go with a wider tire.   2020 Porsche 911 3) Improve comfort. Porsche didn’t want to go all out here to create a two-door Panamera, Achleitner said, but the company achieved this goal by giving those adaptive adjustable dampers a wider spread of damping force. Not only can they be firmer as noted above, but they are softer as well. They react much quicker than before—up to 100 times per second—and they react in all stages of damper travel to adapt to road conditions. It’s the first major change to the Porsche Active Suspension Management dampers since they were launched in 2004. According to Porsche, these changes make absorbing quick, short bumps like cobblestone roads much more effective. In my drive, I found the 911 to be comfortable for a sports car, even more so than in the past, but I’ll need more time behind the wheel, especially on bad roads to see just how effective the changes are. 2020 Porsche 911 Carrera 4) Improve interior noise. This didn’t mean reducing total sound in the cabin so much as reducing noise from the wide rear tires, which Achleitner said is just loudness. After all, Porsche owners want to hear the distinct, mid-tonal thrum of their flat-6 engines. They don’t, however, want to hear water and pebbles splash around in their wheel wells or the white noise of tires on rough pavement. To combat noise, Porsche started with a stiffer structure where the rear suspension parts mount to the body, used more-efficient sound insulation in the rear wheel well areas and behind the rear seats, and chose top strut mounts that provide better insulation. Even the larger rear wheels contribute to less tire noise because they can run at a lower air pressure. 2020 Porsche 911   5) Fulfill emissions requirements. Porsche pursued three main strategies to reduce emissions. The engine now uses asymmetrical intake camshafts that allow adjacent valves of a cylinder to open with a different degree of lift (2 and 4.5 millimeters versus a consist 3.6 millimeters in the 991) under partial load. This, combined with other efforts to optimize fuel management and combustion reduce emissions and improve fuel economy. A new particulate filter in the exhaust system also reduces emissions, though it is not included in U.S. cars. An extra gear for the new 8-speed automatic transmission is another fuel- and emissions-savings measure. Finally, Porsche future-proofed the car this time around by developing it with a hybrid in mind—likely a plug-in hybrid—in case regulations change anywhere in the world that require either stricter emissions or zero-emissions zones. 2020 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S, Valencia, Spain, January 2019 6) State-of-the-art connectivity. The 911’s center touchscreen grows from 7.0 to 10.9 inches for the 2020 911 and its hardware and software provide faster processing of inputs and data. As it has since 2017, the system offers Apple CarPlay compatibility and can be controlled with tablet-style stretch, pinch, and swipe gestures. Internet radio, a wi-fi hot-spot, and real-time traffic information for the navigation system were previously available, but a new onboard modem now provides these services, as well as access to smart home functions and Amazon Music. 2020 Porsche 911 active lane control 2020 Porsche 911 rear turn assist 2020 Porsche 911 night vision 7) Improve the assistance systems “Nobody buys the 911 because of the assistance systems,” Achleitner said. However, he noted that the average buyer has three cars in the garage, so they may wonder why the 911 lacked some systems that come on their other cars. With that in mind, Porsche decided to add safety systems and make most of them optional. Forward-collision warnings with automatic emergency braking is not optional. It’s available for the first time, and it’s standard. We think that’s a good thing. A new Wet mode is also standard. It adjusts various vehicle systems, most notably the stability control, to make the 911 safer to drive in the rain or in snowy or icy conditions. Blind-spot monitors and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability carry over as options, but the blind-spot monitors add a new Turn Assist Rear feature that monitors the rear of the car when turning at speeds under about 9 mph to warn if, for example, bicyclists may be approaching. Active lane control with traffic sign recognition, and surround-view and night vision camera systems are optional this year. 2020 Porsche 911 Carrera 8) Emphasize muscular styling. With its rear-engine layout, the 911 has always had a muscular tail, but changes for the 992-generation made it even bolder. Both the S and 4S models are now wide-body cars with wide tires on big wheels. That gives the car natural rear haunches that make it look like a predator ready to pounce. Achleitner pointed out, however, that the wider front track helps, too. We agree. It plays off well with the rear to make the car look wide and sculpted with a hint of the sexy Coke-bottle shape that designers desire. Up front, Porsche added lines to the center of the hood that, in the front view, will be the easiest way to tell the 992 generation from the 991. They are among the very few character lines on a very clean design. Via MotorAuthority
