Work In Progress Wednesday 

So! I’m releasing the first chapter of a new fic tomorrow so how about a preview? The first 4 and a half of 6 (or possibly 7) chapters are written so I’ll do a chapter a week. I’ll put the preview below the cut.

Title: In This Lifetime or the Next

Summary: The dreams have started. Inuyasha knows what it means, knows what comes next. His soulmate is alive and she’s ready to be found; but this time, he is not ready to find her. Because he is cursed. Because every time he finds her, she dies. Because she’s never lived more than a year after the first dream.

It shouldn’t be possible to get a demon this drunk.

“What do you mean you’re not going to look for her?” Koga asked, leaning over the bar and eyeing the woman serving drinks, again. His speech wasn’t slurred but he had no volume control and he was swaying dangerously on the flimsy barstool.

“Will you keep your eyes in your fucking skull for five minutes?” Inuyasha asked, snapping his fingers in Koga’s face to draw his attention. “Aren’t you seeing someone?”

Koga scowled and turned back to his friend, swatting at the offending hand. “She kicked me to the curb. Said I wasn’t spending enough time with her or some shit. Whatever, you didn’t answer my question.”

The bartender came over to check on them and gave Koga the stink-eye when he tried to wiggle his eyebrows at her. When she walked away, Inuyasha said, “No wonder you dragged me out tonight. And seriously, the bartender isn’t interested. She can probably spot an asshole a mile away and you’re a giant flashing sign that just screams ‘asshole.’”

Koga scowled. “Fuck off and answer my question. You’ve done this, what, like five times now?”

He sighed, trying not to think about the specifics and failing. “Seven and I can’t fucking do it again. I’d rather be alone than-”

“Oh, cry me a fuckin’ river,” Koga growled and downed the rest of his drink in a single gulp. He slammed his glass back on the bar, drawing a few angry looks from other bar goers and the bartender. “What if this time is different?” He swayed dangerously on his stool and Inuyasha tensed, waiting to see if he’d have to play catch.

“You’re really fucking drunk,” Inuyasha pointed out. “Which is amazing for a full demon. And what if it isn’t? Why the fuck would it be any different this time around?” He put a hand up for the bartender to settle their tab. The wolf had had enough.

“You think...fuck. I should call her,” Koga mused, his mind jumping topics at a speed only achievable when shit-faced.

Inuyasha rolled his eyes, knowing where this was going and asking anyway. “Call who?”

“My woman.” Koga started to tilt and Inuyasha shot a hand out to steady him. He should have just let the asshole fall. Luckily, the bartender was already there, taking Inuyasha’s credit card.

“Fucking hell, wolf shit. You’re not drunk calling your god damn ex.” One hand on his drunk friend’s shoulder, Inuyasha fished two 20s out of his wallet to throw to the bartender. She earned it dealing with Koga the last few hours. She took it with a grateful smile, handing his card back.

“Good luck with him,” she said, pointing at Koga without taking her eyes off Inuyasha. “Be safe and enjoy the rest of your night.” She shot one more look at him before sauntering off to wait on other customers. He was used to the looks his silver hair and gold eyes earned him. Even among demons he was exotic, an attractive novelty with fluffy fucking ears.

“Let’s get out of here.” Inuyasha stood and dragged Koga out of the bar.

When they were safely outside, he pulled out his phone to call for a ride. Carrying an inebriated demon halfway across the city was not high on his list of things he wanted to do on a Friday night. He debated who his best option would be. Miroku was spending the night with his girlfriend, probably being gross, so that was a no-go. Jinenji would be up but the guy was way too nice to put him through drunk-Koga hell and his wife would give Inuyasha an earful for dragging him out. Ginta or Hakaku would be ignoring calls, knowing how Koga got after a break-up. Shiori would do it but he didn’t want a woman for Koga to focus his attention on. Fuck.

He was gonna have to call the fox.

He popped in his custom-made earpiece (because it’s impossible to find earbuds that fit when you have dog ears) and scrolled through his contacts until he found who he was looking for. Shippo answered and it was clear he had been informed of things that Inuyasha had not. “Yo. Lemme guess: Koga’s break-up hammered and you need a ride?”

“How am I the last to hear about him getting dumped?” He growled and scowled at Koga. It was definitely a conspiracy.

“Someone had to deal with it and you seemed like the best option.” He could practically hear the fucker smirking. Yep, they’d set him up.

“Just get your ass down here.” He gave Shippo the address, keeping one eye and ear focused on Koga. At least Shippo was close by.

Turning his full attention back to Koga, he noticed the phone in his hand a little too late.

"Listen, I’m not even mad about that anymore. How about I come over there now and we can make up. I learned this new trick with my tongue and-" Koga didn't get to finish his sentence because Inuyasha snatched his phone away.

"First, gross. Second, what'd I fucking tell you? No drunk calls to your fucking ex." He glared at Koga, contemplating murder and the best place to dump a body, until a quiet voice distracted him. The ex was still on the phone.

"Hey, anyone still there?"

Shit. 

“Hey,” Inuyasha said, holding the phone so they could hear each other more clearly. It was awkward at best with his ears on top of his head but his half-dog-demon hearing made up for it. “Sorry about the asshat, I wasn’t paying enough attention.”

“Oh, it’s alright. I was kinda expecting it anyway,” she said and sighed. “I shouldn’t have answered my phone in the first place so it’s partially my fault.”

Inuyasha growled, fighting the urge to punch Koga in the throat. The woman’s voice was soft and sweet, gently caressing his sensitive ears. The thought of Koga getting anywhere near someone who sounded so...so pure made Inuyasha’s blood boil. “Keh, not your fault he’s an asshole.” Said asshole was making grabbing motions for his phone but Inuyasha swept a leg out casually, Koga’s ass meeting the ground hard enough that Inuyasha heard his teeth clack together. “Don’t worry, I’m not giving him his phone back until he’s sobered up a bit.”

“How much has he had to drink? It takes a lot to get a demon that drunk,” she commented.

“Too much, clearly. I can’t promise he won’t try to call you again when I’m done babysitting his ass. Want me to delete your number from his phone?”

“Hmm, it’s tempting but no.” She sniffled and he wondered briefly if she’d been crying. Just because she was the one doing the dumping didn’t mean she couldn’t be upset about it. “Is he...well, really upset? It wasn’t a...a nice breakup. I kind of...um...well, I accidentally shocked him with my reiki when he wouldn’t leave and I uh, I feel kinda bad.”

Inuyasha couldn’t stop the bark of laughter that escaped his throat. “You what? I mean, I’m sure he deserved it.” Koga grumbled from the ground beside him but Inuyasha ignored him.

“Don’t laugh,” she said but he could hear the amusement in her voice and the poorly stifled giggle. “I never trained beyond keeping it in so sometimes it just...escapes.”

He shook his head and chuckled but reigned in his mirth quickly. “You, uh...are you alright?” he asked, genuinely concerned for the woman even though he’d never met her.

“Oh, yeah.” She sighed and sniffled again. “I mean, I’m as good as I can be after something like that. Thank you though, for asking. Um...what was your name?”

“Oh, uh Inuyasha.” Should he have been on the phone this long with his friend’s ex? Absolutely not. Did he care at the moment? Also absolutely not. His brain was scrambling for a way to keep her talking so he could hear more of her melodic voice. His instincts were shouting at him to comfort and protect the woman on the other end of the phone. He needed to put a stop to that and soon.

“Well uh Inuyasha, my name’s Kagome. Thank you and, um...it was nice to meet you, kind of. Oh, I mean, it was nice to meet you but we only kind of met. Not ‘it was kind of nice to meet you’...um, shit. I’m rambling, sorry.” She giggled and he could feel his ears twitching at the sound. It was fucking adorable.

The awkwardness of it all made him chuckle. “I get it. You too, Kagome.” He liked how it felt saying her name. “And if asshat bothers you again, just let me know and I’ll deal with him for you.”

She giggled again and it just wasn’t fair what it was doing to him. “Will do. I...um, I gotta go. Bye, Inuyasha.” 

“Bye, Kagome.” He was sure he was grinning like an idiot by the time he hit the end call button. Hopefully, Koga was too drunk to notice.

“Gimme my phone back, shit-breath.” Koga had managed to get himself back to his feet at some point and was making a more focused grab for his phone. His scowl was a good indicator that he’d heard a good bit of the conversion. Inuyasha didn’t miss the way his eyes narrowed when Inuyasha finally let the smile fall.

“Here, fuckface.” He tossed the phone in the air, Koga catching it with ease despite his drunkenness; he was already starting to sober up.

The blare of a car horn made them both jump. “You two assholes call for a ride?” Shippo yelled out the window. “Hope you know, I charge by the minute.”

Inuyasha pushed Koga into the car, trying and failing to not think of Kagome, thoughts of his soulmate forgotten for the time being.

Introduce yourself! *Jaies: Hello this is Jude S. (Jaies) and I’m the lead composer for Roji’s Room! I’ve always loved making video game music, and following indie projects, and now I get to pair that love with a really great game. It’s a dream come true! I hope everyone enjoys the music and the game (: *Spicyroll: Greetings! This is Jaeroll the game developer for Roji's Room! For now I am mostly working alone with the game along with Jude who composes the music. I am a intro/extrovert who is in love with life and its inhabitants. I am a registered nurse and a Reiki master. I love meditating , yoga, anime, JRPGs, indie games, crystals and music. I have been dabbling with rpg maker since 2006 with RPGMaker XP. Making so many projects but not completing them haha. I am grateful for the indiedev and rpgmaker community met so many awesome people through this development.

What is your project about? What inspired you to create this game initially? *Spicyroll: Roji's Room is an experiment for self discovery there will be many choices and activities that the player will be doing. It might be risky but my goal is not only to benefit the characters in the game but also the player themselves. Meditation, actions, emotions, wholesomeness. Display the rewards to practicing self love and the outcomes to not. I am a strong advocate to self love, I would love to deliver inspiration to people to practice more self love for themselves. I hope the game can invoke such emotions. But as the story its a mystery involving a boy who is a master at lucid dreaming but lost his memories. He was able to enter a dream world that is in disorder because the moderator lost it's body and is only a brain. The brain is Roji, its your quest to help retrieve the body and restore order to this special dream. While hopefully restoring the memories of Jae. Meeting many dream entities along the way your choices are really important. What inspired me is the many years of playing RPGs, and creating projects that was very surface and generic. I love art, creation and the helping of others.

How long have you been working on your project? *Spicyroll: It's been a good year (:

Did any other games or media influence aspects of your project? *Spicyroll: Many games like Moon remix RPG, Undertale, Mother 3, Nino kuni. Artists Bryan lee O maley, Rebecca Sugar, many more. I love the aspect of alternatives to fighting in RPGs. Wholesome.

Have you come across any challenges during development? How have you overcome or worked around them? *Spicyroll: Yes there were many, sometimes just like many other developers you would get dev block or whatever. Burnt out for overworking and what not. Fear of people not liking the concept. Also a big one is the the limitations of rpgmaker, however I am grateful to the engine because just as an artist its easy to use. How I worked on it was giving time to myself, self love, doing other things other than game dev where it sparked that flame. Staying positive and interacting with other game devs. Playing story driven games.

Have any aspects of your project changed over time? How does your current project differ from your initial concept? *Spicyroll: Many aspects! It was going to be REALLY spiritual and concepts were thrown onto you to "wake you up" However I realized it would be very jarring to people who aren't open to such concepts so I thought I should make it gradual. Current one is much more simple and I feel like more organized.

What was your team like at the beginning? How did people join the team? If you don’t have a team, do you wish you had one or do you prefer working alone? *Spicyroll: Well my team is basically just me, I have many friends who produce music but most of them just wanted to chip in one song or two. I found an amazing composer online and built a cool friendship with him. I like working alone in terms of directing but I would be open to members. I just have the fear of butting heads and what not.

What is the best part of developing a game? *Spicyroll: The BEST part of developing a game is just creating something in general and to share in a interactive medium of your tastes of music and design. My most favorite is in hopes of invoking emotions for the player to release to help them in their daily lives.

Do you find yourself playing other RPG Maker games to see what you can do with the engine, or do you prefer to do your own thing? *Spicyroll: I have played many RPGMaker games most are on this list, the big ones Oneshot, Lisa, To The Moon. I realized the limitations of the engine but just remains grateful to be able to create a functional game with little knowledge of coding. Shout out to them plugin creators!

Which character in your game do you relate to the most and why? (Alternatively: Who is your favorite character and why?) *Spicyroll: Although majority of the characters haven't been introduced in development, I relate to the main character. The name is a self insert but the character himself is at his core wanting to empathize with entities and connect. Its up to the player who is the guide to flesh those out or go a different route.

Looking back now, is there anything that regret/wish you had done differently? *Spicyroll: I actually dont have any regrets, I am just grateful to the whole process cause everything negative was a learning experience (:

Do you plan to explore the game’s universe and characters further in subsequent projects, or leave it as-is? *Spicyroll: TAs of now I would leave it as it is and if characters are likable maybe some side stories?

What do you most look forward to now that you have finished the game? *Spicyroll: I look forward to the many smiles and emotions players give while playing the game. Also just art in general characters in many different mediums of art. I would hope that any concept or action can help the person in their waking life.

Is there something you’re afraid of concerning the development or the release of your game? *Spicyroll: It would have to be the engine, I know that sometimes errors will occur and hinder the process of completion. But it will work out ^^

Do you have any advice for upcoming devs? *Spicyroll: Practice self care for yourself, you only have one body, mind and soul. If you practice those things and better yourself you can bring your best self to work on this project. Its sometimes unavoidable due to habits but when you realize that overworking yourself doesn't do any good to yourself or the project you can evolve into higher conceptualization? Also make the game YOU want, like as a love letter to yourself (:

Having your friends play your game with unbias so you can get the whole picture. Which cuts out time doing final edits at the last min of release.

“That’s amazing Shippo! I can’t even hear you! Better than a ninja!” Kagome clapped as Shippo pulled the leaf off his forehead and reappeared inches from her face.

He was learning new tricks in leaps and bounds. She was so proud of him. The latest was a leaf that made him invisible. It took a few hundred tries, but this was the best by far. She couldn’t even hear him!

The sun was getting low so they had made camp. Sesshomaru’s camp was near, as usual, but not exactly with them. That was how it had been for weeks. Kagome’s plans to befriend the daiyoukai had been thoroughly thwarted by the incident with the swords. Or at least she thought. He had returned the next morning and taken his group without a word, but every night when they made camp the impressive force his youki could be felt nearby. Inuyasha bristled and huffed at the routine.

It was when they all settled around for dinner that she had the best, or maybe worst, idea. Inuyasha was eating, or trying to anyway, when he found his chopsticks spirited away. Next his rice was upended over his head by a mysterious force. His ears were turned inside out. His hair tied together under his chin. He swatted at empty air, at a loss for the culprit. Miroku joined the fray and threw sutras at their invisible attacker, but he was at a loss too. The kit, her kit, was too good. Kagome laughed, all the while forming her next plan of attack.

The sun came up slowly the next morning. Grey skies sniffed out the light that should have been. A fine mist had settled overnight leaving everything a little damp. It was a welcome reprieve from the recent heatwave that had everyone moving a little slower, sleeping in a little later.

Kagome was already up though and in that predawn mist woke her kit as well. Slipping away from camp they giggled to themselves while they worked the kinks out of her plan. The first try Shippo deemed not good enough, he could still smell her. The second was a no go too because her reiki was hard to cover. It took him at least ten tries before he managed full invisibility, apparently it was a different thing to do the trick on a human miko rather than a kitsune.

When he was satisfied with his work he let her go, chest puffed up with pride at his greatest accomplishment yet. He returned to camp with a good excuse ready just in case Inuyasha woke and waited for her return. Scratching his head he wondered how long the magic would last and hoped it was long enough.

Kagome picked her way carefully through the underbrush following the heat of youki that settled into her bones and made the soles of her feet tingle. Magic, truth, fear and authenticity

Magic.  It's all around us and it's wonder lies in the eye of the beholder.  We must be open to receiving it, in order to see it.

I wrote a post on magic in April and it was all about shifting your perspective and seeing the magic in synchronicity.  In these last two months though, I have stayed open to even more fantastical ideas of magic, and have not been disappointed.  Some of it is what is considered to be woo-woo stuff, but in aligning myself with people who also look for the magic in the world, I'm discovering that it isn't very woo-woo after all.  In fact, it is very real.

I believe there are many reasons that some people don't "see" that magic exists.  One being that there are those who are simply not ready for it.  Perhaps they have other lessons to learn in this lifetime, or other purposes to fulfill.  Another big one is fear.  Perhaps it is fear of what their friends and family will say.  This is a big one for me, but I'm realizing that I've surrounded myself with so many wonderful people who love me for who I am.  Some of the friendships I have developed in recent years, are some of the the deepest I've ever had.  We support, encourage and inspire each other to be authentic.  To be our true selves.  To figure out what makes us happy and to be unafraid to reach for those stars.

I think something else that hinders people is the fear of opening their minds and not receiving.  Let me say that if this is your fear, you will receive what you are supposed to, when you are ready to receive it.  Three years ago, I wanted to have that connection back with the universe so badly.  As a teenager, I had constant signs and synchronicities, but the further I drifted off my path, the more I lost that connection.  It took several months for me to reestablish it, but once I did... I was hit with so many synchronicities at once, it seemed unreal!

I also believe there are those who might be afraid because they don't want to know what possibilities really exist.  I, myself have never been this type of person, but I feel like I have known many.  I believe that the fear is not recognized, and that they might be so rooted in their routines that any change or deviance from that is not welcomed.  If this sounds like you, or someone you know, there is nothing wrong with that!  We are all unique, and we are all on different journeys.  The truth of the matter is, that "the truth" is different for each and every one of us.

This is the biggest reason why I try to stay open-minded.  While I do not believe everything I hear, I do believe that there is truth in everything.  Whatever the story, there is always some strand of truth.  Something inspired the tale.  The trick becomes figuring out how much truth there is in the story for you, but the even bigger trick is remembering that others will pull their own version of truth from the same story.  While there may be little truth in a particular tale for you, for other's it may be all-encompassing.  Again, it all comes back to that concept of perception.

For me, many truths have been coming out, but my favorite one is that my spiritual journey has led me back to my interest in mysticism... something that I was interested in as a child.  My mother, who is not a very nice person, dabbled in crystal healing when I was in grade school.  After my parents got divorced, she became abusive to me and by summer going into eighth grade, I finally found the courage to tell her I wanted to live with my dad full-time.

Growing up (and still to this day), any time I've gotten too close to the woo-woo stuff, my dad warns me to stay away from the crystals.  For many years, I agreed with this notion.  I didn't know what set her off.  What she got mixed-up in, what made her become "evil".

Pretty early on in my spiritual journey, I've found myself exploring the concept of healing.  I became a Reiki practitioner last year which has really helped me tune in to being able to physically feel energy.  I feel that I've always been somewhat of an empath as well.  I've always had a big heart and feel that I am empathic by nature, but my father always had me consider the feelings of those around me by putting myself in their shoes.  I think that, along with living with an abusive mother and learning to read her erratic moods helped bring it out that empathic nature even more.

Throughout my journey I've been drawn to subjects, and things that heal.  Reiki, sound healing and being in nature to name a few.  I've also found that I have a natural draw towards things relating to Shamanism...an avenue I have not yet explored.  What I find particularly fascinating is that I have had this natural draw towards healing, yet I didn't remember that my mother claimed to be a crystal healer until about a year ago.

Last year, after suffering through a 4 month asthma battle, I bought a salt lamp. After four rounds of steroids, I was willing to try anything to keep my allergic asthma as bay.  I kept reading about the benefits of Himalayan salt lamps and figured, why not?

I noticed immediately that my calico, Jorga, started sleeping next to the lamp 18 hours a day.  She is 14 now, was 13 at the time, and had a previous knee injury that prevented her from jumping any higher than 12-14 inches off the ground.  We have pet steps in our house to help her get on the bed and the couch.

Two weeks after bringing the lamp home, I noticed that she started jumping higher.  She no longer needed the steps.  It was a pretty incredible testimony to the power of this element.  There is no way that a cat could be fooled into a placebo effect.  Also, I could notice a difference in the energy of our home.  Walking into the living room just felt so good.

I started noticing a similar energy in some of the places I frequent and I started realizing that all those places had crystals.  Maybe there was something to these rocks after all?

I started talking to the owner of a Float facility about the incredible energy in his place of business.  As I had suspected, he gave the credit to his crystals.  He gave me the name of his "crystal guy" and sent me home with a gift; a piece of amethyst that he let me intuitively chose.  I brought it home and set it next to my salt lamp and stared at it for days.

Weeks went by and I kept thinking about my mother.  I was afraid.  But what was I afraid of?  I'm a smart woman.  I have a huge heart.  I knew that I wasn't going to suddenly turn into a heartless, abusive bitch.  I certainly wasn't afraid of the rocks themselves.  So far, the experiences I had with them were positive.  After calming my fears of turning into my mother, and realized an even bigger fear.  I was starting to find positivity in something that held negativity in my life for so long.  And frankly, I was scared of what my dad would think.  But holding yourself back from something based on preconceived notions, or how other people might feel is not being authentic to who you are.

One night, I was talking to my husband about my insecurities.  We were talking about my mother and who she became.  Not to make excuses for her, but she definitely went through some shit in her life.  So have I, so have we all.  But perhaps she wasn't strong enough to handle things properly.  Perhaps her lesson in this life time was something that many of us could never understand.  My husband made a very interesting point that night... he posited who she would have been had she not found the crystals.

Granted.  Her "snapping" and the crystals came at the same time, but what if she was going through her own journey and the crystals helped soften her blow?  Maybe if she didn't have them, (or in an even more abstract thought - "them" meaning "something to believe in" or "a source of connection") she might have been even worse?

After much debating, I decided to give Tom's "crystal guy" a call.

Thus began the journey of collecting crystals.  I had read that you don't choose the crystal, the crystal chooses you.  Its funny, but becoming so in touch with energy helped me very easily select the few beauties that came home with me that day.  People experience the connection in different ways, but for me I can feel the energy in my heart chakra (and recently my solar plexus as well).

Not only do the stones feel good, but that "feel good" energy in my home has amplified even more.  And an extra bonus is that they are beautiful to look at.  I enjoy not only learning about the metaphysical properties, but also learning about where a specific stone came from.

I currently have a piece from Uruguay and another from Brazil.  This makes me feel even more grounded/connected with the Earth knowing that I have these beautiful little pieces of her from places I will probably never get to venture to.  Below is a photo of an amazing piece of green flourite from a one-time find in Madagascar and when you hold a light up to it, it glows the most electrifying combination of emerald and lime green.

My hope in sharing this story, is that it will inspire people live a more authentic life.  To think about the roots of your fears and to question things.  Question your truths.

Have you ever stopped to think about why you believe something?  Is it because it's a belief that you were raised on?  Is it something that you heard?  Is it something that you researched? Is it something that you just deep-down in your soul knew is what is right and true for you?

My journey may be very different from the journey you are on.  Our truths may be very different.  But that is what is so incredibly beautiful about these lives we get to live.  We have the opportunity to learn and experience so much from each other if we just stay open minded enough to be unafraid of experiencing that which might be outside of our norm.

Stay authentic.  Stay open-minded.  Stay Wonderfull.
