Welcome to Doffy's Physics Lab.
In this post, we'll calculate how big Doflamingo's hands are and how long his fingers are.
Let's dive right in!
Tumblr media
Okay, so the thing Oda did very very well is capture how long Doflamingo’s limbs are. He has a very strong chest, and his arms are as previously calculated 1.5m. What I say Oda captured well is actually (after some checking) that the proportions of Doflamingo’s body are not THAT bad compared to irl logic.
The man who has the largest hands in the world is Sultan Kosen (Turkey). His hands are 29 centimeters, but his height is 250 centimeters. Mr Kosen has gigantism and acromegaly, this is why he’s so tall and this is why his hands are bigger. Hands are usually 10% of the body height, so his hands should actually be 25 cm, but biology comes into play here, and after seeing some pictures, his hands look very normal for his size. They fit him. When I say how large the hand is, it means the length of the hand from the wrist to the middle finger.
So, this means, taller people’s hands most likely are not 10% of their height, but 11%. You may be wondering why I only heightened it for 1% percent. 1% proportion increase is about 4 cm increase on the real hand already. This fits for how big Mr Kosen’s hands are and follows bone structure that he has, which we can use to then calculate Doflamingo’s.
Also, body mass and body build goes into account. Even tall people have bigger hands than they should sometimes. Skinny people who are tall may have hands that aren’t 10% their body height, so the mass influences the proportion. The reason behind this is genetics and the aforementioned body structure. So, yes, it can depend! Not everyone has 10%! It doesn’t mean you are not healthy, it varies from person to person!
So, for tall people with a larger body mass, let’s put 10% for now; he is weighty but he is also lean in the arms and legs.
This is how we calculate:
10% proportion
Hand = height • proportion
hand = 305 • 0.10
hand = 30.5 cm
This is already huge. Absolutely huge. His hand is bigger than an average human’s head. His hands are 1.5 cm longer than an A4 paper. Yeah. Awesome! That’s awesome.
Sorry, geeking out and fangirling, please stand by.
Okay, we’re gonna do it with Oda’s proportions now. We’re gonna make it 11%.
The anime makes his hands so big. He a big boy.
This with 11% is the most accurate I like to believe.
0.11 • 305 = 33.55cm
We’ll call this next one the extreme but still possibly accurate version
With 12% body proportion (this is extreme of extremes I think this is too much, but fuck it, One Piece doesn’t follow rules so neither will I)
Hand= 305 • 0.12
Hand = 36.6 cm
These are all big.
Okay, now for the fingers. The anime keeps them good on proportions! Oda, as well! They look outta proportion to us midgets but they’re normal size for Doflamingo.
(rubs hands giddily) Hehe, I wanted to know this for AGES.
For this, we use the length of the hand and then anatomical proportions.
Middle finger is 35-40% of the total hand length
Index finger: 30-35%
Ring finger: 30-35%
Little finger: 30-35%
Thumb: 22-27%
Yeah, for normal people.
Not for One Piece, me thinks. I always imagine Doflamingo’s middle finger is half the length of his entire hand. Big boy has long fingers.
But fine, we’ll go with this first. And THEN we’ll have fun in the One Piece proportions.
Okay, so this is where we need to know the finger-length type classification of the hand. There are 4 types.
Tumblr media
Most artists, Oda included, draw the hands with the mountain type ie middle finger is the longest. If there are any artists who can confirm/deny so I can later fix it, that’d be great.
Based on this study with men, their index finger is longer than their ring finger, and only by a few mm. We’re gonna put everything in the middle. We’ll make his index finger 1 cm shorter from his middle finger. Ring and index finger are gonna be the same length to get that “mountain” curve.
Now we will go with his hand being 30.5 cm ie with 10% proportion.
Warning, I am breaking dreams with this one, and once again, I like to think his middle finger is 15 cm long! Is it too long? Maybe. Do I care? No. The fun thing about knowing rules is knowing how to break them.
Formula:
percentage • hand length = finger length
30.5cm hand
Middle finger = 0.40 • 30.5 = 12.2 cm
Index finger = 0.35 • 30.5 = 10.67 cm
Ring finger = 0.35 • 30.5= 10.67 cm
Little finger = 0.325 • 30.5 = 9.91 cm
Thumb = 0.27• 30.5 = 8.23 cm
To put his thumb into visual, 8 cm is the average length 180 cm tall men have of their middle finger.
Okay, now onto the official One Piece proportions the 11%. We just need to have his big hand size, he has HUGE hands. Okay.
33.55 cm hand (most likely to be Doflamingo’s hand size)
Middle finger = 0.40 • 33.55 = 13.42 cm
Index = 0.35 x 33.55 = 11.74 cm
Ring = 0.35 x 33.55 = 11.74 cm
Little = 0.325 x 33.55 = 10.90 cm
Thumb = 0.27 x 33.55 = 9.05 cm
Last Possible Version (Extreme Version)
36.6 cm hand
Middle finger= 0.40 • 36.6 = 14.65 cm
(chokes) Holy Mariejois and celestials. Okay. Okay.
Index finger = 0.35 • 36.6 = 12.81 cm
Ring finger = 0.35 • 36.6 = 12.81 cm
Little finger = 0.325 • 36.6 = 11.89 cm
Thumb = 0.27 • 36.6 = 9.88 cm
Woah, his thumb is huge 🤣🤣🤣 (I have a 30cm ruler sitting on the paper rn so yeah these are crazy numbers)
And there you go.
Okay, now width of fingers, we have no way of calculating it except to use known information.
For example, palm width of a hand of 19.3cm long is 8.9cm. let’s cut our losses and divide that to see how much smaller is the palm (this is cheating btw but it gets the job done). Usually your fingers are half the length of your palm. Sth like that. The palm is drawn mostly as a square or a curved parallelogram depending on the angle in which it’s drawn in. I am going with the easier option where all sides are equal.
We got 2.16
So we can say…
Average Palm width without adjusting for OP proportions
for 30.5 cm hand = 30.5/2.16 = 14.12 cm
Doflamingo’s Palm Width (adjusted for OP Proportions)
33.55 cm hand = 33.55/2.16= 15.50 cm
(I just realised I can just go minus his middle finger because that is how we got the length of his hand omg I am an idiot, no need for complex stuff)
33.55 cm - 13.42 cm = 15.13
(Okay, this is the better and easier way and makes good sense!)
(Whispers) Jesus fucking Christ
Extreme Palm Width
for 36.6 cm hand = 36.6/2.16 = 16.96 cm
Dear fucking GOD.
I really like the 30.5 cm from an accuracy standpoint but also, usually, hands are bigger than the average, and the taller you are, basing on your body type & genetics, that proportion can shift slightly.
So 33 cm isn’t a far reach at all for Doflamingo. He absolutely can wrap his single hand around a woman’s throat depending on the circumference of the woman’s throat. He cannot wrap them around a man’s neck fully to enclose it. He can, single-handedly with a 33 cm hand, absolutely completely envelop a woman’s neck.
There’s that. His finger thickness is probably 2-3cm.
And that's it!

I stumbled upon Fuegoleon slander today, so can I request comforting fluff with Fuelara, please?
We don't tolerate Fue slander in this house! So YES
I took my time, but this was very overly self-indulgent to write, and I just might make it be the most of a chapter of The Vows We Made once I get there. Anyways! I hope you enjoy! ^^
Pairing: Fuegoleon x Solara Fanfic type: Oneshot Genre: Fluff/romance Length: ~3.1k Contains: sleepy Fue, mentions of their twins, mentions of Salamander, maybe some possessive themes if you squint??? (The idea of "my family, I need to protect it", does that count??), just pure fluff, they're in love, and go to sleep There is a mention of "Ms. Rose", who is Briar Rose belonging to @/koneko-pi !
The long, quiet corridors of the castle that lead into an office, among a lot of things, which were lined by large windows that faced the courtyard. One could almost see the trees and the bushes, flowerbeds planted in there, but from this height, one would have needed to walk closer to the sheets of glass. And thus, it was only the faint light of the moon that could be seen coming from the outside. Just the sight of the dark blue autumn skies; the sunset had gone already.
Even the servants had gone home, or the bed, for the most parts already. Only the guards outside of the castle walls were awake to keep an eye; even though keeping an eye open was difficult both outside and inside of the castle walls.
Solara could swear that he steps must’ve wobbled ever so slightly as she made her way down the halls, lit by the light of the moon that cast shadows at her feet. The shadows she barely saw as she struggled to keep her eyes open from the state of fatigue she was feeling. The weight of it that she felt had increased exponentially over the last few years.
It’s only age, she told herself, though she was barely past 30, not yet closing in on 40, even if that decade in her life loomed somewhere in the horizon. Not that the number bothered her. It was more so just that she could feel herself getting tired more easily.
She couldn’t keep up with the kids, who wanted to stay up all night long. Or so they said, and still dozed off at 9 the latest. Which was good. They needed their rest.
It was only that the twins had been restless during the last couple of days. The last of the baby teeth would be coming out, which was the cause of the poorly slept nights lately. This night included.
But now they were finally asleep; in their rooms, safely tucked in with Salamander by their side. Or, Sal’s basket by them to be more precise.
The Great Spirit of Fire had assumed a smaller form while living in the castle, and preferred to sleep in his small little wicker basket nestled in a blanket. But the basket needed to be in the common room that joined the bedroom of the twins, so that it could be equally close to both of them.
Solara had reasoned to herself that it was partially a wish of Sal, and partially Fue’s wish amplified in the dragonic spirit. The wish to keep safe. To protect. Make sure that his family was being looked after. The sentiment of ‘my family’.
And it would allow Fue to stay up to date via Salamander, though their communication was what it was. Limited to kinds of hunches. Feelings. That was still the idea how Solara understood it. That it was a non-verbal connection, which didn’t allow for that complicated discussion as with some other spirits might. It was just the nature of Salamander. He was a non-verbal creature, and his methods of communication were limited.
But she didn’t mind. She didn’t think any of them minded. It was just how it was.
A way in which father could be with the family, while working; he could keep an eye on the kids, while having to perform his duty. Even if from behind a desk. And there was no reason to lock the kids, or the family, into a sitting room next to his office.
No... life was out there. It was in the blades of grass, in sunshine, the glimmering of stars, in the frost bites and sweet drinks and the smile of those you hold dear. Life was never meant to be confined within the walls of an office decorate with motifs of grandeur.
The things he says... she mused to herself with a slight shake of her head. And still he very much confines himself into that office... her eyes fell in a slow blink, as her gaze and attention were directed somewhere far, far away, but her steps knew the way nonetheless. It was inscribed into her bones by now; she didn’t need to think about it. All for the sake of the people, he says... she smiled to herself, even if the smile bore a veil of melancholy over it. While trying to make it into every little event, to be there during bed time, read to Leon and Cyra, even though he’ll need to go back to complete something more... always something more...
Her chin lifted as she thought about it. All those moments when he had emerged from the office, with eyes that seemed to bear the weight of the world. But as the kids would go running to him, the weight would subside, he’d pick them up, and tell them how much he missed them.
He doesn’t-, I know that he wouldn’t need to come to us while he’s still working. To take a break to do that. And most wouldn’t. They’d just... complete whatever is on their desk and come home when it’s time for it. And I know... I know that he tries *so hard*. To be everywhere. To come home for a while, chat to the kids, maybe play with them for a while during the busy work days, and then it’s “off to bed, I’ll read a story to you”, she smiled at the thought. The precious moments during the hardest days.
Because during the good days, those that he had off, as much as he can have them off, he’d spend more time with Cyra and Leon. Give them as much attention as he could. Be as good of a father as he could.
But... she couldn’t claim that it wouldn’t be hard for the two of them. Because between work and the kids, there was very little time for the two of them. Which... it just made things a bit difficult. Not that they could claim there to be a real problem, but sometimes they would have liked to just spend time with each other. Cuddle and kiss and... perform spousal activities... maybe sleep a little longer... all the things for which there didn’t seem to be time or energy.
All the things... well... maybe after some time... The first 2 years are the most difficult, or so they say. And then it’ll ease up on sleep at least.
She sighed to herself as she reached the door. The large wooden door which was decorated with some carvings and a golden handle. To signify that it wasn’t just any door. Or at least that it wasn’t a cleaning closet out of all the things. Not that she could imagine anyone mistaking it for one in the first place. Not in this part of the castle.
Her hand landed onto the cold metal surface, without a knock. After all these years, there was no knock.
She wasn’t sure how many times he had had to tell her that she was among the few people, who wouldn’t need to knock when it came to him. That she’d always be welcomed, no matter what.
And how many times had it taken that she hadn’t believed? That she had still knocked. Maybe not waited for a reply, but had still knocked.
During day time she still would.
A silly little thing. She deemed it with a smile.
Just a small thing that amused her. Perhaps amused him too. A kind of a game for them to play. As foolish as it might have sounded. Him having to tell her with a smirk that the door was open, and how it’d always be open for her. And how she’d argue back with a grin of her own, telling him that she couldn’t know what he was in the middle of. That it was courteous. A little game of cat and mouse. Or maybe just two cats play fighting.
Perhaps the latter would be more fitting.
Perhaps that was why when she opened the door, there was no sound. Quiet as a cat.
But when her eyes were granted an image of the room from behind the wooden surface of the door, she stopped.
Just stood there with her hand on the door handle, and looked at her husband. Sleeping over the desk. A single candle lighting the room on his desk.
His mana hand wasn’t manifested, but his left arm was under his head. His chest was rising and falling, and there was the sound of steady, heavy breathing flowing through the air. It wasn’t quite a snore, nor did it sound forced. Just a very... intent way of breathing. Maybe due to the position he was in.
A hum broke through the steady sound. It vibrated through the air, speaking of how it must’ve risen from his throat, as a faint frown appeared on his brows.
But it disappeared just as quickly as it had appeared.
A small smile tugged up the corners of Solara’s lips as she looked at him. Poor thing... he must be exhausted...
She took a few steps forward, closer to the table, with feather light steps, careful not to wake him.
Bed would be more comfortable... and if he stays in that position he’ll have a sore neck tomorrow. He’s bound to, even though his exercise routine keeps him in good shape and his muscles open. For the most part at least, she chuckled under her breath. But... since he is tired enough to have fallen asleep there, maybe I shouldn’t wake him up... at least for a while... Let him rest for some time and then... then wake him...
Her eyes turned to the door of the sitting room that was next to the office. There’d be a closet where there were blankets and a few extra pillows. Which might have been unconventional for a sitting room, but... they had deemed it better to have them, in case of such situations. An afternoon nap.
Perhaps there lied a danger too. Because since they had blankets and pillows close by, a nap would be more tempting.
A terrible danger, really.
Another amusing thought.
She looked at her husband, still sleeping over the desk with a neutral expression.
Stay there, she thought, joked to herself, before making her way to the sitting room and to the closet from where she found a blanket. A part of her was thankful that they oiled all the hinges of the doors so well, and made sure that no floorboards were creaking.
Yes, of course, it made sense to make sure that it all was in the best condition, but... sometimes such little things could me missed. Especially if you’re only moving around during daytime, when small sounds such as those didn’t seem quite so apparent. While during night time, they were as if amplified. Which was why she was mindful to close the closet, and the door, as silently as possible, before tip-toeing to him.
Don’t nap for too long, she thought while opening the blanket in her hands. You’ll get a sore neck if you do...
She placed the blanket over him, around his shoulders with as little movement as possible, and leaned over him.
But as soon as she did, his eyes begun cracking open and a groggy hum left him.
“Mm... What time is it?” He asked, while trying to gather his senses. His tone was quiet, nearly distant, like he was trying to grab onto reality while still being partially asleep.
“Almost two..” she whispered back before leaning closer and pressing a tender kiss onto his temple. One that was warm and comforting; that held a promise of a soft, warm bed where he might rest with a smile on his face. And the knowledge that he wasn’t alone in the world. That he had someone with whom he could share his smiles and his sorrows just the same.
“Mmm...” he hummed again before taking a deep breath and leaning back in his seat. “Maybe I should call it a night...”
“Maybe,” she half teased, half smiled before placing another kiss on top of his head.
“Did the kids fall asleep?” He asked as he pushed back his chair and stood up, making a dragging sound, wood scraping against would, break through the otherwise silent room.
“After a while,” she replied with a hushed tone, almost as if she was still trying to be careful not to wake him. “I have the monitor with me, just in case too.”
“The monitor?” He frowned while looking at her. “Oh yes, yes,” he continued before pinching the bridge of his nose. “The device Ms. Rose of the Research Department gave us...”
“Yes,” she gave a small nod, during which her eyelids fell in a slow blink. “She is a good friend.”
He hummed in agreement while pushing his chair under the desk.
His expression was neutral, as if there were no thoughts running through it. Which was probably true from his state of fatigue.
“Ready for bed?” She suggested, half asked, while reaching for his hand.
“Yes,” he uttered, while taking her hand into his, and giving it a squeeze. “I’ll take a quick shower first.”
She gave him a nod, while taking a step back to lead him towards the door.
“I’ll keep the bed warm meanwhile,” she assured him while squeezing his hand.
“I wouldn’t have it any other way,” he smiled to himself as his steps followed hers, easy and natural, like the flow of a river.
Like this was the only course he should take. As if this, squeezing her hand and following her to rest, was just like drawing breath.
As if the way back to their room was no journey at all, despite the winding, twisting and turning corridors of the castle where one could get lost in. Plenty of people did. And even him, admittedly, sometimes needed to think what might be the quickest route from one place to another. Still, after all these years of living there, he still needed to think from time to time.
But these steps, over which the silvery moonlight cascaded; the way it reflected from her hair, and embraced her form, as if she was some divine being brought to him in sleep rather than a mortal just like him... It felt like no time passed, as he followed her.
Time didn’t exist.
It was just the two of them.
It was just him, trusting that she’d lead him to the sanctity of their bedroom, where it was soft, warm and safe.
As if he wouldn’t have known the way.
But perhaps he would have stumbled in his drowsy state.
Perhaps, perhaps not. None could tell. For it was left in the sea of possibilities.
The sea that wasn’t important; that lost all meaning as they reached their room, as if in a dream.
The door was closed behind them, and he stopped, but didn’t let go of her hand as she tried to continue further into the room. But the stop created a tug, and the tug made her turn around with raised brows and hum out a question. A simple: “Hm?”
It was only then that he took a step closer, as if to step into her embrace, and pressed a kiss onto her forehead.
“Go to sleep, my love,” he whispered against her skin, letting the words glide over her like a river of warmth and tender affection. Like something so soft and gentle he couldn’t name, even if given a millenium to describe it. “I’ll be there in ten minutes,” he promised.
He always promised, and he always kept that promise.
“I can’t promise to stay awake for ten minutes,” she partly teased, partly joked, but mostly she told the truth.
“I’m not expecting it,” he hummed with an amused smile while pressing his head against hers. “You should sleep, if you’re tired,” he told her. “I’ll find my way to you.”
She smiled to him with closed eyes, not making a move to make her way to the bed.
“I always will,” he promised again. Yet another promised he intended to keep. Another promise he had always intended to keep. One that felt like it was a promise that he had made so many times before that he couldn’t count.
But would he need to? Count them? He didn’t deem it necessary.
“Go on, my love, I’ll be there soon,” he nudged her head with his, before slipping into the bathroom. And she slipped into bed in the meantime.
The covers were soft. A bit cold, but they’d warm soon enough.
She rolled onto her side, towards his pillow, and resisted the urge to pull the pillow closer so that she might bury her nose into it and breathe in his scent. Just like she resisted the urge to shift onto his side of the bed. Just like she resisted the urge to gather his side of the covers into her arms, so that she might feel him close to herself again.
All the things she resisted. And yet she could feel her consciousness slipping away.
Little by little, she was drifting into a sea of dreams.
But then again, she hadn’t promised to wait for him to get to bed. She trusted that he’d some soon.
Within ten minutes.
Even if those minutes felt like an eternity.
Or maybe one fifth of it.
A fraction.
The bed shifted next to her.
She tried to open her eyes, but her eyelids felt heavy. Too heavy to open fully, but still her hand reached closer.
There was another kiss on her temple.
“Thank you for warming up the bed,” he whispered. But she could hear him loud and clear; his voice vibrated to her through her heartstrings, or perhaps the golden threads of fate that had spun into ropes. “I loved you,” he whispered again.
She smiled, must’ve smiled. Her hand took a hold if his. Fingers intwined together with his into a secure hold.
“[I love you],” he professed again, sounding a little more drowsy than a moment before.
“[And I love you,]” she replied with a hushed tone. “With all the days I have left,” she continued, not sure if he was still on the brink of the twilight zone, or already within a dream. “And even beyond it...”
She wasn’t sure if he’d hear, but she was sure that he knew. He knew, but still she needed to tell.
She’d always need to tell him. To remind him.
That she loved him too.
She’d always need to tell...
And through the darkness, her drowsy state, she could feel him squeeze her hand back.

WHOS READY FOR SOME CENTENNIALS!!!!!! unasked for explanations below once again
This set of designs is different from Ryan's because i basically just traced my old sketches and redid them digitally to give them colour so there are less design details (sorry lmao)
ANYWAY continuing with the "time-accurate" clothing choices, I'm hoping it's more obvious with loey and neas this time. You have no idea how RELIEVED i felt when i saw neas' third overhaul was in the 2000s. I love details but I have been working with suits for like 30 designs by now.
Because I did these back in october I don't really have proper ref images but if you googled men's fashion for each of their respective eras you should get pretty good results and if you don't im sorry💀
Not sure if it's obvious but they're supposed to "age" with every overhaul, yea im aware my ability to draw people older than 40 is nonexistent-
On that note, I have a more in-depth hc for how the "human" of an engine appears which would explain how loey and neas can "age" but the short version is the "human" is a combination of the maturity of an engine's mentality and the engine's actual age
I do not know enough of the Skarloey Railway lore to back my headcanons but I hc that during their early days, the SR was more strict with appearances, hence the suit jackets and whatnot (kinda like how RWS SR engines all have the same livery)
Towards the SR's later days, the change of directorship and the increasing diversity of their rolling stock led to much more relaxed regulations on appearances. The jackets that the overhaul 2 designs are holding would look similar to the jacket that overhaul 1 loey is wearing, which would bear the engine's nametag and the signature red shoulder pad designating an engine's gauge
Also the nametag and specifically the number badge were details added later when I finished my handel and petah designs, yes I love it a lot that's why i mentioend it.
Overhaul 1 neas is particularly different from overhaul 1 loey because for one they're two different decades, but also the time between his first and second overhaul was when neas had to run the line on his own (not to mention the world war woah...)
I haven't really figured out specific height hcs yet but neas and loey are around the same height as each other but grow a tad with each overhaul
ok das it for this one i think, thank yall for the wonderful reception of ryan im so happy yall loved him😭🥹also thanks for making it to the end next time it's probably gonna be handel and petah<3

The Four Horsemen
Profiling written by Professor Ozpin
Profile #2- War
Alias: War
Name: N/A [Unknown]
Age: N/A; Assumed mid-40s
Kingdom of Origin: N/A
Sex: Male
Height: 6'6"
Weight: N/A
Physical Description: War is a tall, older man with shoulder length graying brown hair. His eyes are covered with a dark red cloth; completely blind. War wears regal clothing consisting of red and gold. He wears a dark red overcoat with golden accents, black dress pants, and dress shoes, as well as a dark red cape with his golden emblem on it; a golden throne with a crown circling the back. War also wears a golden crown, resembling the one the Last King of Vale wore.
Semblance: Division. War can turn anyone against each other, whether it be two individuals or two or more groups. Those affected display increased negativity, such as hatred and anger towards the other group.
Weapon: Bellum Finale, "Final War"; A greatsword with burn dust embedded in the blade.
Personality: At first, War is quiet, formal and regal. He shows respect, even to his enemies and victims, but moreso his enemies. However, War relishes in bloodshed and, of course, war. War seems to be rather eccentric and enthusiastic, and taunts his enemies as the fight goes on. War appears to have a somewhat short temper, and can snap easily. War is an incredibly good fighter despite his blindness, almost on par with Death. He is intelligent and knows how to get under a persons skin. War also appears to be rather egotistical, and tends to refer to himself as 'regal' and 'royal'. War also appears to be sensitive about his blindness and the scars hidden by the dark red blindfold. Qrow Branwen, when fighting War, had cut off the blindfold on accident. As a result, War had gone into a flying rage.
Relationships: Mostly unknown. Appears to be extremely close with Death; possibly in a relationship. Seems to deliberately annoy his allies, and appears to dislike the two sisters. The most useful for Salems cause, as he embodies the very thing she works towards.
Notes: Based on past interactions, War could possibly be Mistralian or Valian. He seems to be obsessed with history, particularly The Great War. War is extremely deadly; approach with great caution.

Some Fat Burning Tips
First, I am not a fitness expert (I only play one on TV). Just kidding...unless you know of a role that's open then I will surely audition! You all know that I like to joke around. I can really only speak to things that have worked for me personally, so that is how I will approach the topic at hand...fat burning. I also enjoy writing so I am hoping to merge my love of writing and my passion for fitness into these occasional blog posts. While I am not an expert, I am going through my personal trainer and nutritionist certification, so I at least have a textbook to look at!
Like I said, I can only speak to things that have worked for me, personally and over the last 9 months I was able to cut my body fat percentage from about 25% to 11.5%. That required regular exercise but also being very intentional with my diet. So here's what I did in a nutshell and if you have questions let me know.
Try to get 10,000 steps per day. I work at my desk most the day so I have to make sure I get up and walk or park way out in the parking lot to force myself to walk or just simply go with my wife or kids and dogs for a walk in the evening. Also, one way I increased my steps was actually at the gym. Instead of staring at my phone between sets, I try to walk around in circles. Walking is one of the most effective things you can do to burn fat, hands down.
Eat my final meal and/or snack of the day by 7pm and eat or drink NOTHING after that....no cereal, no hot weenies, no leftover chicken wings...nothing.
Don't eat anything until about 10:30am the next morning. There is science behind it, which I am not citing btw, but for men, our bodies produce testosterone and burn fat best and sometimes only in a state of starvation. This occurs most effectively while we sleep so going to sleep hungry is not a bad thing if you want to burn fat and keep your T levels up (with all the benefits that brings to the table-wink, wink).
Yes, don't eat anything until 10:30am but start the morning with a large glass of hot water (not scalding, just tapwater hot) with a pinch of sea salt and a few squirts of lemon juice. Man, you can feel it run through your veins, wake you up , and get you going. After the water and before eating breakfast (at 10:30am) you can drink black coffee (black means no cream and sugar...be a man). Awe, don't cry I'm just Joshing you Starbucks fanboys, but seriously...black coffee only. The sugar will mess up that T building/fat burning state you got going on.
Try to get at least 8 hours of sleep, distraction free. This can be hard especially if you have to piss a lot (like me). We will save the prostate discussion for another post. But do the best you can on this because, again, this is when you are making testosterone and burning fat. We all like it when have to pole vault out of the bed in the morning and this is when your body is making all the stuff needed for that to happen.
You see I like to write as much as I like to talk so this could go on for a while, but the biggest thing really is diet. You gotta be eating healthy. Track your macros. If you don't know what those should be then reach out to me and let's figure it out. It's different for every guy based on height, age, weight, and activity level but once you know what those goals are...be intentional about staying within your target goals.
So that's enough for now. Like I said, ask any questions you have. Let's work together to get and stay fit as we get older so we don't feel like we're over 40!
Cheers...Billy
Oh P.S. I forgot to include but NO MORE CHIPS, FRENCH FRIES, or SODAS! I'll talk more about this later, but for now CUT THEM OUT!

Iva's BG3 Guys [4/?] → Astraeus & Tazhadur
"I bring the thunder!" "Well, I bring my ✧sparkling personality✧."
The Quivering Thumb is a gladiatorial enterprise in Westgate, a free city on the Dragon Coast. Their sandpit arena is popular with nobility, merchants, commoners, and even with slaves, because the Thumb promises freedom and a thousand gold pieces to any slave who can survive a year in the pit. The Thumb is regarded as a "fair-fight" enterprise, in which no side of any given battle is meant to be massacred. The Thumb’s new up and coming stars are Tazhadur of the Storm and Astraeus the Star Kissed, who keep the crowds entertained with their fierce rivalry.
Now, they’ve pretended to put aside their differences and are bound for the Sword Coast to compete in a tournament as a team *gasp*. Where one of them will get abducted by a Nautiloid and the other will struggle to rescue them.

✦ Background: Many years ago, one of Astraeus ancestors had an affair with a Demon of the Abyss. Many generations later the Demonic genes finally resurfaced as Astraeus was born a Tiefling, much to the surprise of his two seemingly normal human parents.
Although his unusual appearance always set him apart from others, Astraeus very much enjoyed the attention this got him.
It was his love for the admiration of others that eventually let him to pursue a career as a pit fighter. There was nothing he enjoyed more than putting on a show for his adoring fans in the arena.
Astraeus gained his Warlock abilities after killing an opponent in the ring and taking his weapon, a magnificent glaive, for himself. Little did he know at the time that within that weapon housed a bloodthirsty entity that would increase his power tenfold.
His newest place of employment is the Quivering Thumb in Westgate, where he is locked in a constant struggle with Tazhadur over who is the most glorious of the arena’s resident contestants.

As are the circumstances around him being sold into slavery. He spent most of his adult life fighting in the Blood Arenas of Manshaka. Until he was sold off to the Quivering Thumb in Westgate.
Luckily for him, any slave who can survive in the pit for a year, gains their freedom and plenty of gold. A task which Tazh fulfilled easily.
The thousand gold pieces did not last long however, as Tazh decided to celebrate his new found freedom extravagantly.
And he soon found himself fighting in the arena again for coin. Besides, he had come to enjoy the thrill of the fighting and the adoration of his fans.
What he does not enjoy however is that peacock of a Tiefling, Astraeus, who is constantly trying to steal his place in the spotlight.
✦Who do they dream of?: Unfortunately Astraeus.

Obesity Limit by Age 2023
New Post has been published on https://bankakredin.com/obesity-limit-by-age-2023/
Obesity Limit by Age 2023
For a healthy life, the body weight must be within the limits suitable for the body mass index. As the person moves away from healthy values, the risk of disease increases and the comfort of life decreases, regardless of age. Obesity is the disease of the age with increasing fast-food style nutrition and decreasing movement around the world. Increasing fast-food consumption increases lubrication and causes the person’s body weight to be outside the limits that should be according to height and age. Adults and children who have reached the point of obesity should be treated as soon as possible. You ask, “How many kilos is the obesity limit for age?” If you are wondering the answer to the question, you can take a look at the details.
What is Obesity? What Weight Does Obesity Start From?
Obesity is the accumulation of too much fat in the body to affect the metabolism. A person is considered obese if their weight is higher than their body area. The Body Mass Index value is used to determine obesity in adults. This value, which is calculated by dividing the body weight by the square of the height in centimeters, indicates obesity when it is 30 kg/m2 and above. Obesity can be evaluated not as weight, but by the ratio of the weight to the height of the person. In children, obesity is calculated with standard growth charts, not BMI. In order to find the obesity value, the child’s age and height are found from the chart and it is checked at what age the height corresponds to the 50p value. From the age-based weight chart opened for the age reached, the percentile of the weight for the age, that is, the p value, is checked.
Obesity Values in Children
Obesity age and weight limit in children is not the same as in adults. Height, weight, and body mass index charts for boys and girls vary in children. Obesity in children can be understood with two methods. The first method is to find the p value of the body mass index according to age by opening the BMI percentile scale for age after the body mass index is calculated. If the value is 95p and above, obesity is considered. The second method is calculated over the weight value according to the height age. Obesity is considered to be 97p and above when looking at the weight according to the height and age of 95p and above. With this method, the following steps can be followed for obesity calculation:
The age-height percentile chart is opened according to the gender of the child.
The age at which the height corresponds to the value of 50p is found and noted.
The age found is the age of height.
The weight percentile chart is opened according to the age of the child.
The age of height is found and it is noted which p-value corresponds to the weight.
If the result is 97p or higher, it is considered obesity and an expert opinion is required.
Obesity Values in Adolescents
It would be wrong to ask the question of what is the obesity weight limit in adolescents as in children. According to the World Health Organization, adolescence covers the ages of 10-19. Obesity in adolescents is calculated as in children, and the accepted values for obesity are as follows:
95p and above in boys based on BMI:
10 years: 22.5 kg/m2
11 years: 24.5 kg/m2
12 years: 26.0 kg/m2
13 years: 26.5 kg/m2
14 years: 27.0 kg/m2
15 years: 27.6 kg/m2
16 years: 28.2 kg/m2
17 years: 28.8 kg/m2
18 years: 29.4 kg/m2
For girls, 95p and above based on BMI:
10 years: 22.6 kg/m2
11 years: 23.8 kg/m2
12 years: 24.8 kg/m2
13 years: 25.4 kg/m2
14 years: 25.8 kg/m2
15 years: 26.0 kg/m2
16 years: 26.1 kg/m2
17 years: 26.2 kg/m2
18 years: 26.1 kg/m2
Obesity Values in Adults
Those with a body mass index of 30 and above are considered obese. But obesity is also divided into levels within itself. 30-34.99 kg/m2 BMI indicates 1st degree obesity, 35-39.99 kg/m2 BMI indicates 2nd degree obesity, and 40 kg/m2 and above BMI indicates 3rd degree obesity. As the obesity value increases, the risk of disease also increases. It can cause heart diseases, stroke, type 2 diabetes, some cancers, gallbladder diseases, sleep apnea, calcifications. The treatment of the resulting health problems becomes even more difficult in obesity.
Risk of Obesity-Related Disease Occurrence in Adults
While measuring the risk for health in obesity, waist circumference and hip circumference are taken into account. A waist circumference of 88 cm or more in women and a waist circumference of 102 cm or more in men means that weight is risky for health. Another risk factor indicator is the waist to hip ratio. If waist/hip is more than 0.85 in women and more than 1.0 in men, it means android type, that is, male type obesity. Android type obesity increases the risk of developing diseases and reduces the chance of treatment.
What are Obesity Treatment Methods?
Fat loss is the basis of obesity treatment. For fat loss, the person needs to get rid of the excess weight in his body. Vital changes such as increasing physical activity, reducing calorie intake, and choosing healthy foods help weight loss, but sometimes these methods alone are not enough in obesity. The methods applied by the person himself may prolong the process or fail. Various methods can be used for weight loss, but these methods must be selected and applied by specialist physicians and dietitians. Methods applied by experts include diets and bariatric surgery. The method to be used is determined according to the person and the most appropriate method is selected according to the needs of the person by making appropriate analyzes by the specialist doctor staff.
Weight Loss with a Healthy Eating Plan
One of the most used obesity treatment methods is healthy nutrition lists applied with a dietitian. With diets, weight loss of 5% to 10% of the initial weight is expected within 6 months. By creating calorie deficits in nutrition plans, the weight loss process begins with exercise support. It is possible to lose weight slowly and healthily with the diet lists given to the person. However, diet can be a difficult and motivational method for some people. In such people, if the doctor deems it appropriate, obesity surgery is directed.
Bariatric Surgery
Weight loss is achieved through surgery in people with serious health problems who cannot diet or cannot achieve the desired result with obesity surgery . The surgical method applied is  gastric bypass  surgery. With this surgical procedure, also known as Roux-en-Y, the stomach is surgically reduced, but while food intake is reduced, nutrient absorption from the intestines is also reduced. Gastric bypass is divided into types in itself. One of them is  sleeve gastrectomy  , also known as sleeve gastrectomy. Thanks to bariatric surgery, the person loses 75% of their weight within 1 year after the operation, and thanks to the shrinking stomach volume, they gain early satiety and gains in some diseases thanks to the weight they lose.
The problem of obesity, which carries a health risk, is a disease that is increasing day by day and treatment methods are developing. By finding the appropriate treatment method, plans should be created according to the person and it should be ensured that the person regains his/her health in the most correct way. Obesity can occur not only in adulthood but also in childhood and adolescence. It is wrong to believe that children will get weaker as they get older. If obesity is present at an early age, it is important to consult a specialist and start the treatment with the most appropriate method when treatment is necessary in order to prevent health risks that may occur in the future of children.
Medical Park, with its 27 hospitals in Turkey, helps people in the treatment of obesity and treats obesity patients with advanced surgical and medical methods. If you think you or your child has an obesity problem, you can make an appointment and be examined.
obesity limit by age, are obesity rates decreasing, are obesity rates increasing in america, are obesity rates rising, are obesity rates going down, can obesity shorten life expectancy, can obesity shorten your life, can obesity affect height, can obesity be considered a disability, does obesity age you, did obesity increase in 2020, does obesity reduce life expectancy, does obesity increase with age, what age does obesity affect the most, at what age does obesity become dangerous, does obesity affect life expectancy, does obesity lower life expectancy, has obesity increased over the years, has obesity increased, has obesity always existed,

7 Metrics Everyone Should Know About Their Own Health
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you’re asked to share a few fun facts about yourself, you’re probably not going to rattle off your blood pressure or cholesterol levels (even if your “good” cholesterol is, well, really good). But you should have a solid sense of what those numbers are, experts say. Why? “That old adage that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure is absolutely correct,” says Dr. Josh Septimus, an internal medicine physician with Houston Methodist Hospital. A small number of conditions, including heart disease and metabolic disorders, cause an enormous amount of suffering. “If we can identify a few things that help us prevent those morbidities, it’s very much worth your time.”
That said, you don’t have to know everything. Experts widely pan full-body health scans, for example, that claim to catch early signs of problems like cancer. And while it’s certainly possible to track and analyze your health data via smartwatches and other gadgets, you’re not necessarily going to gain much by doing so. Septimus’ patients sometimes “get lost in some random number,” he says—and when that happens, he refocuses them “on the basics.”
Here’s a look at the seven metrics everyone should know about their own health.
Your waist circumference
Septimus always tells medical students that if he had only one measurement to use to predict how greatly they’d suffer from medical problems, it would be waist circumference, which reveals the amount of fat around your middle section. If you have a waist size greater than 35 inches for women or 40 inches for men, your risk for heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, and other metabolic problems increases.
This is a much more useful measure than BMI, he says—a notion supported by research. It provides a more accurate estimate of abdominal fat, which predicts disease risk. Plus, BMI—which is calculated based on height and weight—doesn’t account for factors like muscle mass.
To figure out your waist circumference, wrap a tape measure around your middle section, right at your belly button. Make sure you’re standing up, and take the measurement after you exhale. “Know your number, and if it’s too big, try to make it smaller,” Septimus says. He regularly tells patients he doesn’t care what the scale says—that number can be influenced by, for example, new muscle mass—but he does like to challenge them to lose 1 to 2 inches off their waist in six months. “If you’re going to the gym and your waist size is dropping, it’s working,” he says. “If your waist size is not changing, it’s not working,” in which case it’s time to reevaluate your strategy, ideally with the help of a doctor.
Your cholesterol profile
You should always have a sense of your total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. That’s why Dr. Sam Setareh, a staff cardiologist at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and senior clinical researcher at the National Heart Institute, runs lipid panels on his patients at least annually. He repeats the tests every three to six months if someone has elevated levels they’re working on lowering. LDL, he adds, is the most important value: “That’s going to tell me about the patient’s risk of developing coronary disease or atherosclerosis,” also known as plaque-clogged arteries. (Not every doctor does this automatically, so you may need to ask for a panel if it’s been a while.)
Read More: What to Do If Your High Cholesterol Is Genetic
Many people with high LDL will be prescribed medication like a statin, but that depends on factors like your personal risk level. As the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention points out, you might be prescribed medicine if your LDL is 190 mg/dL or higher, or if you’re age 40-75, have diabetes or a high risk of heart disease or stroke, and have an LDL level of 70 mg/dL or higher.
Your blood pressure
If you have high blood pressure, your heart has to work harder to pump blood—which, over time, can damage the walls of the blood vessels, leading to atherosclerosis. As Septimus points out, hypertension can trigger complications like heart attack and stroke, while hurting organs including your brain and kidneys. That’s why it’s so important to check your blood pressure at least once a year, and more often if you’re at higher risk based on factors like age, family history, and obesity.
According to the American Heart Association, normal blood pressure is less than 120/80 mmHg. Exactly how your doctor proceeds if yours is high depends on your individual circumstances. If you’re a 35-year-old with mildly elevated numbers, Septimus says, you’ll probably be instructed to make lifestyle changes. But if you’re 60 and your father died of a heart attack, it’s much more likely you’ll start medication. “We have dozens of blood pressure medications, many of which are cheap as dirt,” he says. “We can use them safely to reduce heart attack and stroke.”
Your blood sugar
There are a few basic ways doctors can measure blood sugar, but most rely on a hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) test. “It’s a little bit of a crude tool, and it doesn’t tell the whole story, but it’s usually the best number to go with,” Septimus says. The test averages blood sugar over the past two to three months, and it’s used to diagnose Type 2 diabetes and prediabetes. If your A1C level is between 5.7% and 6.4%, you’ll meet the criteria for prediabetes. If you have an A1C of 6.5% or above, you’ll be diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, in which case your doctor might encourage lifestyle changes or prescribe medication like metformin.
You should get your A1C tested annually if you’re over 45, or if you’re younger but are overweight or have risk factors like a sedentary lifestyle or a parent or sibling with diabetes. People with diagnosed diabetes, meanwhile, usually test at least twice a year, depending where they are in their treatment regimen.
Your basal metabolic rate
It’s easy to confuse basal metabolic rate, or BMR, with that other three-letter acronym that starts with a B: BMI. But the two measures are markedly different. Your BMR measures the minimum amount of energy your body needs to function at rest. “It’s the fuel your body burns just to stay alive each day,” says Dr. Farhan Malik, medical director at Atlanta Innovative Medicine. Knowing your BMR, he explains, allows you to determine if you’re eating enough to support your body’s basic needs. That way, you can ensure changes to your diet and exercise routine are safe and sustainable.
Lots of online calculators can determine your BMR if you plug in your age, height, weight, and gender. For example, a 30-year-old woman who’s 5’5″ and 130 pounds would have a BMR of around 1,300 calories per day. “If she’s exercising a few times a week, she’d want to consume more than that to avoid fatigue and maintain muscle,” Malik says. “But without knowing her BMR, she wouldn’t have that frame of reference to set a proper calorie target.” This insight, he adds, helps you know what your body really requires to thrive every day.
Starting in your mid-30s: your grip strength
Grip strength—or how much hand and forearm power you have—is important. “It’s a good indicator of the future functionality a person will have as they age,” Setareh says. If you have strong hands, you’ll be able to open jars, swing a pickleball racket, lift heavy objects, and catch yourself when you fall. Research suggests that weak grip strength, on the other hand, is linked with diabetes, heart disease, and cognitive decline, as well as a higher risk of mortality and worse quality of life.
Setareh recommends asking your doctor or physical therapist to measure yours at your annual physical starting in your mid- to late-30s. Usually, the test involves squeezing a dynamometer, which is a device that measures power. If your grip strength could use improvement, your doctor will suggest a plan for special exercises you can do at home—like squeezing a tennis ball for 10 minutes twice a day—in addition to weight training and resistance training, Setareh says.
If you’re over 60: your vitamin D level
As you age, your body’s ability to convert sunlight into vitamin D decreases—which is why Dr. Meghan Garcia-Webb, an internist based in Wellesley Hills, Mass., checks patients’ levels annually after they turn 60. She does the same for adults who have darker skin (melanin can interfere with vitamin D synthesis) or live in areas that don’t get lots of sunlight (like the Northeast during gloomy winters). It’s also important to be tested regularly if you have a high body weight, “because vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin,” she says. “It’s going to get kind of sequestered into that fatty tissue.”
Why the focus on D? For starters, it plays an essential role in keeping bones strong and helping prevent osteoporosis, and it can bolster the immune system. While Garcia-Webb usually treats mildly to moderately low levels with an over-the-counter supplement, people with particularly low levels require a high-dose prescription tablet.

The Surprising Truth About Body mass index in 2024
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a widely used measurement that helps determine whether an individual has a healthy body weight relative to their height. Introduced by the Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet in the 19th century, BMI has become an essential tool for assessing body weight and its potential impact on health. This article talks about the importance of BMI, explains how it is calculated, and discusses what different BMI values represent. We have also implemented a tool that would let you calculate your Body mass index (BMI).
Tumblr media
Importance of Body mass index (BMI)
BMI is important for several reasons: - Health Assessment: BMI provides a quick and easy way to screen for weight categories that may lead to health problems. It is a useful tool for identifying underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obesity in adults. - Risk Indicator: Higher BMI values are associated with an increased risk of various diseases, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and certain cancers. Monitoring BMI can help individuals and healthcare providers identify and manage these risks. - Public Health Tool: On a larger scale, body mass index is used in public health to monitor trends in obesity and underweight in populations. It helps in the development of health policies and programs aimed at improving overall health outcomes. Calculating BMI BMI is calculated using the following formula: BMI = Weight (kg)⁄Height (m)2 For example, if a person weighs 70 kilograms and is 1.75 meters tall, their BMI would be calculated as follows: BMI = 70⁄1.752 = 70⁄3.0625 = 22.86
Calculate your Body mass index (BMI)
BMI Calculator
Calculate BMI Body mass index (BMI) Values and Their Meanings BMI values are categorized into different ranges, each representing a different weight status. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines these categories as follows: - Underweight: BMI less than 18.5 Implications: Being underweight can indicate malnutrition, eating disorders, or other health issues. It is associated with a higher risk of osteoporosis, anemia, and immune deficiencies. - Normal Weight: BMI 18.5 - 24.9 Implications: This range is considered healthy. Individuals with a normal BMI have a lower risk of weight-related chronic diseases. - Overweight: BMI 25 - 29.9 Implications: Overweight individuals have an increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. It is a signal to adopt healthier lifestyle habits to prevent further weight gain. - Obese: BMI 30 and above Implications: Obesity is divided into three classes: - Class 1 (BMI 30 - 34.9): Moderate risk of weight-related health problems. - Class 2 (BMI 35 - 39.9): High risk of weight-related health problems. - Class 3 (BMI 40 and above): Very high risk, often called severe or morbid obesity, is associated with a significantly increased risk of serious health conditions.
Limitations of Body mass index (BMI)
While BMI is a useful screening tool, it has its limitations: - Does Not Measure Body Fat: BMI does not directly measure body fat. Athletes or individuals with high muscle mass can have a high BMI despite having a low body fat percentage. - Variations Among Different Groups: BMI does not account for differences in body composition across different ethnic groups, ages, and genders. For example, older adults may have more body fat than younger adults with the same BMI. - Does Not Account for Fat Distribution: BMI does not consider where fat is distributed in the body. Abdominal fat, which is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, may not be accurately reflected by BMI alone. BMI is a valuable tool for assessing body weight and its potential health implications. Understanding your BMI can help you and your healthcare provider take appropriate steps to manage your health. However, it is essential to consider BMI as part of a comprehensive health assessment, including other factors such as diet, physical activity, and medical history. By maintaining a healthy BMI, you can reduce your risk of weight-related health problems and promote overall well-being. Read the full article

Note
These sources seem very interesting. I would like them!
Sure. From my notes, so it's all in Chicago format and from jstor since that's what I use to download my stuff:
(the list got long, so under the read more)
Parker, Charles H. “Paying for the Privilege: The Management of Public Order and Religious Pluralism in Two Early Modern Societies.” Journal of World History 17, no. 3 (2006): 267–96. Some good explanation for imperial religious tolerance if you haven't seen it before! Covers Catholics under Dutch Protestantism as well as non-Muslim communities under the Umayyad dynasty and Ottomans—explains both the hierarchy in place, legal recourse and protections, as well as evidence of Christian/Jewish/Muslim communities informally crossing over and living together (e.g., Christians and Jews would both go to shari'a courts for recourse), repression (e.g., tribute was demanded, evidence of marginalization/submission in the social sphere in exchange for private worship), and attempts to manage conflict (e.g., instances of both Christians receiving dispensation to expand a church before they threatened to drag the Catholic French ambassador into it, as well as vigilante aggression against Christians when Western Europe felt like doing a little crusadin'). Explains a lot of the nitty-gritty.
Guidetti, Mattia. “The Contiguity between Churches and Mosques in Early Islamic Bilād Al-Shām.” Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London 76, no. 2 (2013): 229–58. Talks about the connections between churches and mosques post-Muslim conquests and how they were built in parallel, sharing sacred space, and even partitioning buildings. Maps included!
SCHEIN, SYLVIA. “BETWEEN MOUNT MORIAH AND THE HOLY SEPULCHRE: THE CHANGING TRADITIONS OF THE TEMPLE MOUNT IN THE CENTRAL MIDDLE AGES.” Traditio 40 (1984): 175–95. http://www.jstor.org/stable/27831152. History of the Temple Mount after the Crusaders entered the chat. Kinda just including this because I think it's interesting. Also, fun fact, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre has been looked after by a Muslim family for centuries. 's cool stuff.
Dalachanis, Angelos, and Vincent Lemire, eds. Ordinary Jerusalem, 1840-1940: Opening New Archives, Revisiting a Global City. Vol. 1. Brill, 2018. The authors delve a lot into (as the title suggests) primary sources from the given timespan, analyzing the narratives surrounding the time. Covers a lot of stuff, from municipal elections to debates surrounding the British Mandate (despite citing Fanon and Saïd, the book is kinda reluctant to label a colonial duck a colonial duck, but does a good job explaining rhetoric flying around the Zionist movement and Arab nationalists post-WWI). I have read MOST of this book, fyi, not all of it; it's a great reference for censuses and letters between figures. But it's good especially for reading what people actually said at the time.
Mandel, Neville J. “Ottoman Practice as Regards Jewish Settlement in Palestine: 1881-1908.” Middle Eastern Studies 11, no. 1 (1975): 33–46. http://www.jstor.org/stable/4282555. Discusses late pre-Zionist Ottoman immigration policy, as well as increasing tensions courtesy of the empire trying to cut down on attempts by Jews to migrate to Palestine, and the process of creating colonial settlement pre-Mandate (particularly as antisemitic sentiment reached an ignominious height in their neighbor, the Russian Empire, resulting in an influx of Ashkenazi migration fleeing pogroms, full of people ripe to be radicalized into Jewish nationalism). Largely included because it is, I think, interesting to see that "pilgrimage" was never banned as a loophole for foreign Jews trying to migrate to Palestine (indeed, wasn't particularly questioned before either, for anyone entering).
Doumani, Beshara B. “Rediscovering Ottoman Palestine: Writing Palestinians into History.” Journal of Palestine Studies 21, no. 2 (1992): 5–28. https://doi.org/10.2307/2537216. I am including this because it's important to challenge Orientalist and racist priorities of who and what gets historicized into history, particularly with an area that people are obsessed with talking about the history of the land—the people, not so much.
Stroumsa, Gedaliahu G. “Religious Contacts in Byzantine Palestine.” Numen 36, no. 1 (1989): 16–42. https://doi.org/10.2307/3269851. This goes a bit back further, discussing the formation of different communities in Jerusalem and the formation of plurality in the populations, particularly with the EXTREMELY weird and oft-tragic relationships between Late Antiquity Jews and Christians (Roman rule excepted), as well as the beginning consequences of Islamization and conversions of communities of the period (hint: it didn't really make for a homogenous community lol).
Rabbat, Nasser. “The Meaning of the Umayyad Dome of the Rock.” Muqarnas 6 (1989): 12–21. https://doi.org/10.2307/1602276. The Dome of the Rock! It's important! We have no records explaining its deal! Read more to find out? Maybe.
Barkey, Karen. “Islam and Toleration: Studying the Ottoman Imperial Model.” International Journal of Politics, Culture, and Society 19, no. 1/2 (2005): 5–19. Makes the argument that it's more useful to view tolerance as a bureaucratic matter than a theological one, which I think is closer to correct and more useful.

How to get better: instructions for those who want to gain weight and improve their health
Tumblr media
How to understand that you don't weigh much
It is considered that a person is underweight if his body mass index is below 18.5 kg/m2.
To calculate BMI, use the following formula:
BMI = weight (kg) / height 2 (m) For example, if you weigh 60 kg at a height of 1.8 m, your BMI is 60 / (1,8 × 1,8) = 18,5. It turns out that you do not have a lack of weight, although you have come close to the limit of the norm.
But if your height is 1.7 m and your weight is 45 kg, then your BMI is 15.57 kg/m2, which indicates a clear body weight deficit.
Why weight loss is dangerous Society is now more concerned about the treatment of obesity, because this problem is much more common than excessive thinness.
However, a significant lack of weight and anorexia can be more dangerous than extra pounds.
Excessive thinness can cause several negative consequences at once.
Increases the risk of premature death People with a body mass index below 21 kg/m2 are more at risk of dying from cancer, cardiovascular, respiratory, mental and neurological diseases than those who weigh more.
After the age of 40, the life expectancy of underweight men is on average 4.3 years shorter, and of women 4.5 years shorter than that of people with a BMI within the normal range.
Increases vulnerability to infections Underweight children and adults are more likely to suffer from infectious diseases than people of normal weight.
Although much here also depends on the quality of nutrition, compliance with hygiene standards and the presence of concomitant diseases.
It has a negative effect on bone health in the elderly With age, bone density decreases, and underweight people are more at risk of suffering from fractures and osteoporosis.
Increases the risk of dental problems Korean scientists in a cohort study checked the data of 17 thousand people and found out that people with insufficient body weight are more at risk of losing their teeth.
Scientists have suggested that this is due to poor nutrition and a lack of essential amino acids and vitamins.
It can cause difficulties with conceiving a child in women Low fat percentage and hormonal disorders associated with it can cause problems with the menstrual cycle and fertility.
Increases the risk of developing dementia in old age The risk of senile dementia in people who are underweight is higher than in those who are normal or overweight.
Where does the lack of weight come from There are several reasons why you may suffer from a weight deficit.
Lack of calories in the diet The most obvious reason for weight loss is a lack of energy coming from food. It is easy to detect it. It is enough to calculate how many calories you need to consume, taking into account weight, height, age and level of physical activity.
You can use our calculator, and then at least roughly estimate your usual daily diet.
Impaired absorption of nutrients If you eat normally, but still do not gain weight, it is possible that the body simply cannot absorb nutrients.
This happens when:
-gluten intolerance, or celiac disease; -lactose intolerance; -short bowel syndrome after surgery to remove part of the small
-intestine; -Whipple's disease (a rare bacterial infection); -parasites, diarrhea and infectious diseases that last a long time; -chronic inflammation of the pancreas; -excessive use of laxatives. To find out if your body can absorb the necessary nutrients, contact your therapist or gastroenterologist.
The presence of diseases If you start losing weight without intentional changes in diet and physical activity, this may be a sign of the following diseases:
-depression; -psychological stress and anxiety; -eating disorders such as anorexia; -oncology; -an infection such as HIV; -a chronic disease, such as COPD or Parkinson's disease; -diabetes; -hyperthyroidism. Also, appetite may disappear due to taking medications. For example, drugs for chemotherapy and for the treatment of thyroid diseases.
Be sure to consult a therapist, even if you have no symptoms other than weight loss.
How to gain weight quickly and safely Find out the reason for low body weight First, determine what exactly caused the loss of kilograms. If it is anorexia, digestive disorders, or, for example, the same hyperthyroidism, simple methods will not work: body weight will not return to normal until you get rid of the underlying disease.
In order not to make a mistake, visit a therapist: he will conduct an examination, offer to take tests and help solve the problem or refer you to a specialized specialist.
If you are healthy and would just like to gain weight, proceed to the following points.
Increase the caloric content of your diet through healthy food To get better, it is worth increasing your daily energy consumption by 300-500 kcal.
Of course, it is much easier to do this at the expense of delicious and high-calorie fast food. For example, eat a bucket of ice cream or a pack of chips. But in the long run, such a diet will not add to your health.
Snacking on fast food can cause bloating and exhaustion, and regular consumption of highly processed and sugary foods can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
Additional calories can be consumed from foods with lots of vitamins and minerals.:
-milk; -starchy vegetables; -avocado; -cream soups; -red meat; -juice; -cheese; -nuts and nut butter; -fatty fish; -protein shakes. In order not to have to greatly increase the portions, try to arrange 5-6 small meals during the day. For weight gain, this is better than 2-3 approaches to overflowing plates.
Add extra calories to your meals There are several ways to increase the nutritional value of dishes and at the same time make them even tastier:
-Use cheese, sour cream and sauces more often. Season vegetable dishes, add to omelets and side dishes. -Complement the desserts with nuts, granola, honey, pieces of fresh and dry fruits. -Cook cream soups instead of regular soups with clear broth. -Lean on potatoes — they contain a lot of carbohydrates, and there is also fiber, vitamins and minerals. -From drinks, give preference to whole milk, fruit and vegetable juices without added sugar. You can also try jelly, fruit drinks, smoothies and protein shakes. -Try healthy and nutritious snacks -Have snacks between meals. Here are some ideas for a quick meal:
-A mixture of nuts and dried fruits. -Protein bars. -Protein shake — ready-made or homemade. The latter can be made from milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, bananas and other ingredients. The recipes can be viewed here. -Sandwiches. For example, you can make toast with avocado and egg or make a quick snack of bread with peanut butter. -Apple slices with nut butter. Take measures to increase your appetite -Eating by force is a bad idea. Fortunately, you can increase your appetite in quite healthy and safe ways:
1.Do not drink before eating. Fullness of the stomach dulls appetite. Try not to drink water at least half an hour before meals. 2.Choose strength training. Working with resistance helps build muscle mass and suppresses appetite for a shorter period than cardio exercises. Choose traditional work with rest between sets — this mode has the least effect on appetite compared to circular and interval work. 3.Give up bad habits. Smoking accelerates metabolism and leads to weight loss, while alcohol negatively affects appetite and disrupts the absorption of nutrients. 4.Ask your doctor about medications and supplements. Appetite will help to increase the intake of fish oil, and in case of zinc and thiamine deficiency, supplements to replenish these substances. However, before buying dietary supplements, it is worth consulting with a specialist. 5.Use large plates. People eat less from small bowls and get saturated faster than when using large dishes. Perhaps by serving food on a large plate, you will be able to trick the brain and increase the amount you eat.
