90s-inspired dialogue prompts
"Dude, did you hear? The new Nirvana album just dropped. We have to hit the record store before it sells out!"
"I swear, if I don’t beat this level in Mario, I’m throwing the controller across the room!"
"You've got mail! Wait, hold on, my dial-up is still connecting."
"Why would you spend $50 on a pager? Just call me on my landline, duh!"
"Have you seen the new episode of Friends? I need to talk about Ross and Rachel!"
"I'm telling you, AOL chat rooms are where it's at. You can meet people from anywhere!"
"Whatever. As if! Like I’m gonna wear that to the mall."
"Let’s meet up at Blockbuster later. I’m thinking about renting Clueless again."
"I just recorded that new song off the radio onto my mixtape. It's going to be on repeat all day."
"Mom said we could use the car, but we have to rewind the VHS before we return it!"
"No way. I heard they're working on something called a DVD. I don't get it. Why change VHS?"
"The Tamagotchi is dying again. I don't know how many times I can save this thing."
"I just got my first Walkman. CDs sound so much better than cassettes!"
"We should totally prank call that radio station and request Backstreet Boys for the hundredth time."
"Okay, I got a quarter—I'm gonna use the payphone and see if anyone wants to hang out."
"I'm recording TRL later. I can't miss that new Britney Spears music video."
"What do you mean you don’t have a MySpace account? It’s, like, the thing right now."
"If my parents pick up the phone while I’m online, it’s going to cut me off. Don’t call the house!"
"I just burned you a CD with all the best songs from the radio. You’re going to love it!"
"If this Y2K thing actually messes up our computers, I’m never trusting technology again."
Tumblr media
"Dude, you won’t believe what I just found at Blockbuster!"
"No way! Did they finally get 'The Matrix' in stock?"
"Why do you always hog the phone line? I’ve been waiting for my AOL dial-up for like, forever!"
"Chill out, I’m trying to finish this important call on my pager."
"Man, you’re dressed like you just walked out of a Nirvana concert."
"It’s called grunge, bro. You wouldn’t understand."
"I’m telling you, Tamagotchis are like, the future."
"Yeah, if the future is taking care of a digital pet all day."
"I just taped the season finale of ‘Friends,’ wanna come over and watch it?"
"As long as there’s pizza, I’m in. Could I be any more excited?"
"My Tamagotchi just died because I was too busy playing with my new Game Boy Color!"
"You need to get your priorities straight."
"Can you believe they canceled 'Saved by the Bell'? Zack and Kelly forever, man."
"Yeah, but the new season of 'Fresh Prince' is all that."
"I just bought a stack of CDs, now my Discman’s set for the road trip."
"As long as you don’t hit a bump and make it skip!"
"I got an email from this girl I met in a chatroom last night."
"Email? You should’ve just asked for her AIM screen name."
"I heard they're coming out with something called a DVD next year."
"Pfft, like that’ll replace my VHS collection."

(re)Introduction
I had an account here, in the BeforeTimes. I guess I’m back.
Who am I?
I make marsupials cry. Especially wombats.
I shot both JFK and JR, know where Hoffa is, invented New Coke, and told Mary Kate and Ashley they could act. I am personally and directly responsible for the French. I throw rabid chinchillas into retirement home socials. I switched the decaf for regular. I wear briefs. I once raised a sea monkey named Clive.
I instruct small children in the finer points of armpit-music. I tear the tags off mattresses, mark heavy packages C.O.D., and have an extensive collection of Gone With The Wind memorial plates.
I invented AOL's marketing campaign, genetically engineered Bill Gates, and sold off my controlling share of Mac stock when investors were nervous. I wrote Verant's "Vision" and promptly began negotiations with Sony.
One word: Teletubbies.
I wipe my arse with holy texts, corrupt nuns into posing for Playboy, tell Sunday school children about the virtues of Ayn Rand, and can belch 'The Battle Hymn of the Republic'.
I am an interesting shade of rhubarb.
I format the 37th disk of 38-disk installs. I am the fly in the ointment, the bee in the bonnet, and the ants at the picnic.
I am the reason American beer sucks, and why they cancelled Punky Brewster but let The Facts of Life wallow for several seasons.
I make colors run in the wash, sweaters shrink in the dryer, and socks disappear at will. I made sure that human males only had enough blood to run one 'important' organ at a time. I invented corduroy slacks for chubby children.
I wrote Britney Spears' songs. I convinced Barry Manilow and Tom Jones to redo old Beatles hits. I scratched your CDs before you bought them.
I know how many licks it takes to get to the center of the tootsie roll pop.
And I love you all.

Look, I fucking hate t*ump, but wishing death on a person and being glad that they’re sick isn’t something that should be said or joked about
Tumblr media
Okay first of all I want to let you know that I, at no point, wished death upon anyone.
In fact, I would really prefer a scenario in which the cheeto fascist doesn’t die. Let me explain: I have lived in the state of Indiana for all 22-almost-23 years of my miserable little gay life. Mike Pence, the Vice President of the United States and therefore next in line to become president should Trump die or something, was governor of Indiana from 2013 to 2017. Pence is far, far scarier than Trump. Allow me to tell you why:
Refused to declare a Superfund site a state emergency
Resided over a massive HIV outbreak in southern Indiana and did absolutely nothing except maybe make the situation worse
Signed Indiana Senate Bill 101, or the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which basically gave people the right to discriminate against LGBT people and, in turn, caused several large businesses including Salesforce and Angie’s List to cancel expansions in the state
Signed a law into effect that placed new abortion restrictions on which procedures could be preformed and prohibited abortion in which the pregnant person’s given reason was “race, gender, or fetal abnormality.” This law also required that any fetal remains, regardless of the stage in pregnancy, be buried or cremated. (Thankfully, this bill was blocked two days later and ultimately ruled unconstitutional.)
Tried to start a state-run tax-funded news outlet?????
Used a private email service to discuss official business while condemning Hillary Clinton for doing the same thing. His personal AOL email account was hacked in 2016.
Defunded several Planned Parenthood locations in southern Indiana (part of the reason there was an HIV outbreak)
Literally hates gay people so much and supports conversion therapy
Just google the guy he’s actually evil
There was a strong campaign from 2012 to 2016 in Indiana where people had vote out Mike Pence shirts (I was one of them) and yard signs and shit, we Did Not Like Him in the more liberal areas of the state.
So yeah. I’d love it if the president didn’t die. At least not until after the election, then at that point I’m gonna hope he dies every day until he actually fucking does. But if he does die, even if Pence is only president for a month, that is a month that I will be VERY scared every fucking day. Pence is evil, and he’s a hell of a lot smarter than Trump. He has the background in politics Trump doesn’t and he’ll get a lot of shit done in a short amount of time, I guarantee it. However, you bet your fucking ass I’m glad he’s sick.
7,310,000 COVID cases
208,000 deaths because of COVID
21 reported deaths in ICE custody in the 2020 fiscal year, more than twice the number of reported deaths in FY2019.
Increased hate crimes the day after his election
He not only refused to condemn white nationalists during the debate, but told specifically the proud boys to “stand back and stand by” because yeah, we knew he was a nazi but shit
ALL of this was preventable. All of it. With COVID, if we’d had a leader who actually believed in science and didn’t hate everyone that lives in the country he runs, we might even be out of this by now. But no, we’re staring down a year of this virus being in our lives and we can’t even get people to fucking wear masks. Maybe if this dickhead gets sick and gets put on a ventilator or some shit, he’ll realize how bad this disease is and actually do something about it. Wishful thinking, I know, but a person can dream, right?
Anyway. If it was some rando I didn’t know who had gotten sick, I wouldn’t be celebrating. I may be a bitch, but I have a heart. But it’s a rapist, pedophile, racist, bigoted fascist who wants to become the dictator of this country I live in, so yeah, I’m happy he’s fucking sick. If this is what stops the descent of the US from pseudo-fascism into overt fascism, I’m fucking psyched about it. And remember:
The only good fascist is a dead fascist.

How come I'm not getting AOL mail anymore?
There was a time when AOL was universally regarded as the premier ISP. There were no issues with AOL's email services. This means that issues with email and desktop software were extremely unusual.
As soon as an issue was reported, the AOL mail team would do anything they could to get things working again.
However, AOL was not able to keep its monopoly for very long. Because of this, AOL email subscribers have started having issues of varying severity.
This "AOL email not received" problem is one of those vexing ones. When a person accesses their inbox, only messages from the past will be displayed.
IOS DEVICES USING AOL MAIL DO NOT RECEIVE EMAILS
Before doing anything else, check to see if your internet is actually connected. You can move on to the following section if you have a reliable internet connection.
My AOL Email Stops Updating—What Gives?
Whenever spambots are in the process of filtering emails, AOL subscribers typically do not get fresh ones. The following conditions may be at play here.
The recipient of your AOL emails has been changed.
Problems connecting to the internet.
The address used is not one that can receive mail.
There is currently an outage of AOL services in your location.
The IMAP/pop configuration is wrong.
Incorrect settings for automatic synchronization.
What Can I Do If My AOL Mail Isn't Working?
Take Away All Email Filters Currently In Use
When fresh messages stop appearing in your AOL inbox. The mail filters should be removed from the account settings.
Almost certainly, the account has a filter set up. This prevents any new messages from being sent to the account. Go to your iPad's or iPhone's "Settings" menu.
To send an email, select the "Mail" tab.
Just hit the "Accounts" tab immediately.
Just hit the AOL key on your keyboard.
Enable data retrieval by activating the "Auto fetch" setting.
Get to your inbox by closing the settings. See if mail is being received by the program. Turn off "Auto retrieve data" if you're still having issues with your iPhone's email account after trying the previous troubleshooting steps. Once you've verified your email settings, add it again. You can reset your account by following these instructions.
Go to your account's "Mail" settings by going to "Settings."
Choose "AOL Mail Account" from the list of accounts by tapping the "Accounts" button.
To cancel your account, select the corresponding button.
You should now restart your iOS device.
Navigate back to the preferences and then to the inbox.
Pick the "Add Account" tab.
Create an AOL account by entering your desired email address and password.
Simply hit the "Finish" button.
You may have checked your mailbox recently and discovered that AOL Mail is malfunctioning once again. That's okay, you have plenty of company. In fact, you're not alone; thousands of other AOL customers face the same problems every day.
When the Internet first became widely available to the public in the early 1990s, America Online (AOL) was one of the first companies to capitalize on the opportunity. AOL Mail, their email program, was one of the first of its kind when it was released in 1993.
Anyone of a certain age is likely to have a warm and fuzzy memory of their renowned "You've got mail!" tagline.
While it's true that "old" often denotes trustworthiness, it's also true that even the most tried-and-true software has its quirks, especially after years of updates. So, let's take a look at some of the more typical issues with AOL Mail and how to fix them.
Reasons Your AOL Service Might Break
There are certain problems that are inherently associated with webmail applications, and if you can solve those, you may be able to get AOL Mail working again. To name a few of the most typical:
Low Quality of Internet
For obvious reasons, you should always double-check your network connection before trying to send or receive emails. Finding out if the issue is with AOL Mail or the Internet, in general, can be done by visiting alternative websites and running your operating system's diagnostics checks.
Incompatible web browser or OS
In spite of their monotony, software updates are essential to ensuring the continued functionality of programs. An increasing number of browser and OS updates can cause incompatibilities with third-party software.
Downtime of Email Servers
It doesn't matter how stable your Internet connection is; an email system is only as reliable as the mail server that hosts it. Although AOL Mail server downtime is not particularly common, it does occur on occasion, often due to routine maintenance.
Due to Incorrect Email Account Settings
Like every webmail program, AOL Mail has its own set of configuration options for each mail account. Account settings errors, like a mistype or an SMTP port error, may cause an issue in connectivity between your inbox and the email service.

Will never use a Drury Hotel
On March 11th I made a Reservation through Expedia for 2 nights at the Drury Plaza Hotel, San Antonio Riverwalk.  I choose the Reserve Now – Pay Later option and of course saw the pages on Expedia stating that no money was due now while finishing my reservation/check out.  Within minutes I received my email confirmation from Expedia confirming my reservation. The next day I received a message from Expedia saying the hotel had cancelled my reservation and it was most likely due to the payment method I had listed.  I immediately contacted Drury Hotels through their website using their contact form and asking what the issue was.  I made it clear that I had used the pay later option.  I further made it clear that the card was valid – it was my checking debit card through Capital One Bank.  But that I did not typically keep much money in my checking and did not link my savings or have overdraft protection allowing charges to clear when the balance was low.  See my email below:
Comments: Made a reservation yesterday through Expedia and the hotel cancelled it. I want to know why.  It was a reserve now, pay later reservation.  Expedia says it was because of my payment method.  There should have been no attempt on my card as it was a pay later reservation and no deposit was requested.  I used my Capital One Bank debit and I am aware there is not enough money in my checking account right now.  I do not have my savings linked to cover shortfalls and do not keep much money in my checking at any given time, simply transferring money as needed.  If it was for some other reason why was I not given one?  I work in the hospitality industry and have run hotels.  This is piss poor customer service.  I would like the reservation reinstated or be given a legitimate reason why it was cancelled.
Hotel: Drury Plaza Hotel San Antonio Riverwalk - San Antonio, TX Date of Stay: 5/11/2018 12:00:00 AM
This was the response I received:
 Dear Mr. Byers,
Whether you have a question, a suggestion, praise or criticism -- we always welcome hearing from our guests.  Thank you for your email.  Per our agreement with Expedia, a reservation made through them is required to have a valid credit card.  To insure it is valid we authorize the card for $1.99.  If the card declines the reservation is cancelled.
Again, thank you for taking the time to share your comments with us.  Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.
 Sincerely,
  Staci Cowan
Customer Service Manager
Drury Hotels Company, LLC
On the surface perhaps, some would find this acceptable.  It is not.  It is an essentially boilerplate generic response. There was no apology for the inconvenience.  No offer to allow me to fix the problem.  No acknowledgement of the points I was making in my initial email.  It came off as if I should have known what the problem was, and I was stupid if I didn’t and furthermore it was too much of an inconvenience for the respondent to bother giving me a personalized response.
But allow me to further explain.  Going back to when AOL was king of the internet, some may recall that even after you cancelled accounts with them they were infamous for continuing to try to debit your bank for payment.  This led me to no longer link my savings account and refuse overdraft protection to ensure that companies could not do what AOL was doing.  I began leaving most of my money in my savings and only transferring as needed.  I later had problems with Wells Fargo allowing charges to go through even without a balance high enough to cover them.  As many may know Wells Fargo has been in trouble a lot in the last few years – including accusations of deliberately and wrongly attempting to generate fees.  I was frustrated by this as I repeatedly told them I did not want any transactions approved unless there was a balance to cover it.  So, I switched to Capital One – which honors that request.  Under no circumstances do they allow a charge to go through unless the balance is there to cover it.  I do a fairly good job of making sure I transfer money in from savings to cover any charges (and of course my paycheck is a direct deposit to my checking).  As it happens I had just had several large payments taken out of my account the day I made the reservations and I think my balance at the time was something like $0.58.  I made the reservations late at night after work and right before going to bed. I have made numerous reservations through Expedia with the pay later option and never had a problem – and had never seen any of them attempt a pre-authorization TWO months in advance of the reservation.
Moving on, out side of my military service, my adult life has been spent entirely working in the hospitality industry.  Predominately restaurants, but a decent amount of hotel work as well.  I have over 25 years’ experience in the field.  Three degrees – a dual degree in Hotel and Food/Beverage Management and separate degrees in Hospitality Management and Food/Beverage Management.  5 professional certifications in the field from the American Hotel and Lodging Association (Hospitality Operations, Food and Beverage Operations, Rooms Division Management, Club Management and Human Resources Management). And can provide proof of that if needed.  I have managed a Roadway Inn and Suites (Choice Hotels), worked front desk and management for a Best Western, Knights Inn (Wyndham Hotels) and several independent properties.  Although I am currently back in restaurants I most recently (2015) was running a Super 8 (Wyndham) here in Austin, Texas.  I am well aware of the procedures and processes used in running hotels – including both the front and back end processes in dealing with the third party booking sites such as Expedia, Booking.com, Priceline, etc. And although I am more than aware that there is a pre-authorization process I have never worked for or known of a hotel that did the pre-authorization more than a day or two in advance of the reservation.  My roommate now runs the Super 8 I previously worked at and I even went so far as to talk to him about it on the off chance that the procedures have changed in the last two years.  He found the actions by Drury as asinine as I had and assured me that no the processes had not changed.
The respondent to my inquiry claimed that their action was “per their agreement with Expedia”.  Again, with my experience I am aware of the agreements with Expedia and the other third party booking sites.  As I stated though at no previous time had I ever had a hotel attempt to do a pre-authorization this far in advance.  Furthermore, Expedia and other sites rely on the loyalty of their clients.  When they tell a member that no money is due now it does not mean that less that 24 hours later a hotel or other business is going to attempt a charge. Expedia’s members rely on this – and the hotels and other businesses know that. So, this is stupid on the part of Drury or any other hotel chain.    It would be easy to dismiss this as overblown whining.  I get that.  After all it is only $1.99, right?  Sure, but it goes to the understood agreement between all the players involved. But it also goes to how this was handled.  I had the money in savings.  Had I been responded to as a valued potential guest – starting with an apology and a personalized response showing some genuine concern for my situation, I would happily have transferred the necessary money for the pre-authorization, rebooked and informed them they could run the card.  And I informed them of this in my response to theirs. (see that response below).  And surprisingly got no further response.  This ranks as some of the worst customer service I have ever received.  I can assure you I will never use a Drury property and will encourage all of my friends and family to not use their properties either.

It is a valid card. As I explained I keep my money in my savings and only transfer over as needed.  Had the site informed me there would be a pre-authorization attempt I would have made sure there was money in the account.  When the site says $0 required now, then that is what it should mean.  I have made plenty of reservations through Expedia when the balance on my bank card was $0 and never had one cancelled.  If you are going to do a pre-authorization on a card the cardholder should be made aware of it.  Furthermore, as I mentioned in my email I work in hospitality. I am currently working in Restaurants.  But most recently ran a Super 8 here in Austin (2015) and have worked in several different hotels before.  I have both multiple degrees in Hotel and Restaurant Management and 5 Professional Certifications through the American Hotel and Lodging Association.  (And if you think I am just blowing smoke up your behind I would be happy to provide proof of my claims).  I have never known a hotel to do a pre-authorization 2 months in advance of a reservation.  I am very familiar with the processes and this is not an industry standard.  Again, this is piss poor customer service.  But that's fine I will take my business elsewhere since apparently your hotel can easily lose $500 customers with no worries.  I will be posting on the Drury Site as well as Trip Advisor, Expedia and others as to my experience with your system and your customer service (your very aloof and borderline disrespectful response as if my question was too stupid and a waste of your time to answer).  For someone who says they are a Customer Service Manager your lack of awareness that "customers" don't appreciate boilerplate responses is very unprofessional.

The Daily Tulip
The Daily Tulip – International News From Around The World
Monday 5th March 2017
Good Morning Gentle Reader… Just a few clouds greeted us this morning as Bella and I emerged from the comfort of home this morning and the weather person says dry and sunny for the next week.. Spring is finally arriving to the Costa del Sol Spain.. of course that means tourists, more traffic and a big increase to the economy of Spain as the hotels start to fill up.. I read yesterday, that due to the preserved problems travelling to the USA that numbers are down quite dramatically and Europeans are heading to Spain for the holidays, the same applied to people from the USA and Canada as Spain is viewed as a “Safe” country which I can confirm living here for some 12 years.. so who knows, maybe I will see you on your holidays…
HE’S HEARD THINGS…. Obama Calls Trump Tower Wiretapping Claim ‘Simply False’.. Without citing evidence, President Trump tweeted that he’d “found out that Obama had my ‘wires tapped’ in Trump Tower,” just before the election, but “nothing (was) found” by this example of “McCarthyism.” An Obama spokesman called the accusation “simply false,” and said his administration never interfered with federal investigations or “ever ordered surveillance on any U.S. citizen.” The claim echoes a Breitbart article’s unverified citation of surveillance court requests for such monitoring, and promises to up the ante in the struggle to investigate administration officials’ Kremlin contacts. And to compound the problem Republican Senator Ben Sasse said Mr Trump's comments were "serious" and he should explain the alleged wire-tapping and how he came to know about it. The Republican president has supplied no details to back his claim. An Obama spokesman said he had never ordered surveillance of any US citizen.
A CUPPA COFFEE, TOM HANKS STYLE… The White House press corps had an espresso this morning, courtesy of Tom Hanks. The actor, 60, reportedly had an espresso machine especially delivered to the White House press corps yesterday. While this is the third time the actor made such a gesture, this time around the gift came with a note. It read: "To the White House Press Corps, Keep up the good fight for Truth, Justice and the American Way. Especially for the Truth part." The note included an illustration of American soldiers, entitled "Fresh, Spirited American Troops" by cartoonist Bill Mauldin. The caption said: "Fresh, spirited American troops, flushed with victory, are bringing in thousands of hungry, ragged, battle-weary prisoners."
ERDOGAN ANGER AS GERMANY-TURKEY WAR OF WORDS ESCALATES… A row between Ankara and Berlin over a series of cancelled Turkish political rallies in Germany is continuing to escalate. On Friday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused Berlin of "aiding and harbouring" terror. He said a German-Turkish journalist detained by Turkey was a "German agent" and a member of the outlawed Kurdish militant group, the PKK. A source in Germany's foreign ministry told Reuters the claims were "absurd". Earlier German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she respected local authorities' decisions to cancel rallies that Turkey's justice and economy ministers had been scheduled to address. Turkey is trying to woo ethnic Turkish voters ahead of a key referendum.
COULD THIS BE TRUMP’S RUSSIAGATE?... Trouble never comes alone. In Washington, that Russian proverb resonated with the revelation that Attorney General Jeff Sessions had — contrary to his Senate confirmation testimony — met twice with Moscow’s ambassador. So he’s recused himself from investigating administration links to Russian election meddling, and now echoes of Hillary Clinton’s email woes have surfaced in Vice President Mike Pence’s use of his private AOL account, which was hacked, to conduct official business as Indiana’s governor. As Democrats agitate for an independent investigation, the spotlight turns to Dana Boente, the acting deputy attorney general — and prior Obama appointee.
WHO KNEW THERE WAS AN “US” IN VESUVIUS?.... US Volcanoes Aren’t Adequately Monitored..There are at least 169 volcanoes across the U.S., with 55 believed to be threatening their surrounding populations. Only a few are closely monitored, while most are not, and volcanologists say that’s a major problem. Because eruptions are relatively rare, those who live near them tend to become complacent, assuming scientists are watching for warning signs. Now three senators are introducing legislation to improve observation and data about America’s volcanoes, and hopefully save lives when the next one blows — spewing fire and brimstone on those with misplaced faith.
SIR IAN'S AWARD PRESENTATION ADVICE…. Sir Ian McKellen may not have had much to do with the now infamous blunder at last weekend's Academy Awards which saw La La Land announced as best picture winner instead of Moonlight, but he has some helpful advice. The legendary actor, best known for his roll as Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, took to Facebook yesterday to share his thoughts about the moment fellow actors Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty read out the wrong envelope. "Dear Faye and Warren," he said. "Next time, do what I always do when presenting."… And the precious advice?.... "Backstage, before you go on, slyly and gently prise open the envelope and sneak a preview of its contents. "If anyone asks what you are up to, explain you may need to check the pronunciation of the winner's name or indeed who the winner actually is!"
GLITTER AND GLAMOUR AT SYDNEY'S GAY AND LESBIAN MARDI GRAS…. Thousands of revellers hit the streets for one of the world's largest gay and lesbian festivals - the Sydney Mardi Gras parade. Organisers said about 250,000 people came out to watch the parade down Sydney's Oxford Street. The annual parade began as a protest in the 1970s, but now has almost 200 floats and thousands of marching participants.
Well Gentle Reader I hope you enjoyed our look at the news from around the world this, Monday morning…
Our Tulips today are of the Balloons over the Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival 2016..Up - Up and away!
Tumblr media
A Sincere Thank You for your company and Thank You for your likes and comments I love them and always try to reply, so please keep them coming, it's always good fun, As is my custom, I will go and get myself another mug of "Colombian" Coffee and wish you a safe Monday 6th March 2017 from my home on the southern coast of Spain, where the blue waters of the Alboran Sea washes the coast of Africa and Europe and the smell of the night blooming jasmine and Honeysuckle fills the air…and a crazy old guy and his dog Bella go out for a walk at 4:00 am…on the streets of Estepona…
All good stuff....But remember it’s a dangerous world we live in ….. Be safe out there…

This Guy Online
Author's Note: This is an unfinished article. I wasn't really inspired.
There I was, trapped between logging out and having my files updated by America Online.  This is so stupid!  I said to myself. It was obvious I was anxious to go offline and continue on with my business. There was no one interesting in the chat room anyway, so I didn't bother to stay online long.
Suddenly, somebody sent me a private message.  Hi, are you busy?  it said. It was he! The guy I was talking to a few days back. I really liked him but he didn't seem too interested in me. I mean, who was I, compared to this gorgeous hunk?
Oh no, how can I respond to his PM? My files are being updated and AOL won't let me answer him! I will just have to let AOL finish and log me out and I will go back in.
AOL did just that. It finished updating and logged me out automatically. I frantically reached for the mouse and clicked on the button to go online again. I wanted to talk to the guy so bad! He was so nice to me when we talked the last time. He sounded so interesting, that I was considering him as someone who might be more than a friend.
As I wait impatiently for the modem to connect to my account, my mom calls me from the kitchen.
Kim! It's time for dinner!  my mom called.
But---I----Can't---!  I groped for words anxiously, looking at the screen.
Get off the computer and get over here!  My mom yelled from the kitchen.
Oh grr!  I gritted my teeth. Now I won't be able to talk to this guy online because I have to eat dinner. I clicked on the mouse to cancel the transmission reluctantly on the computer and grumbled my way to the dinner table.
Now, let me tell you how I met this guy. I was online one night and making smart-alecky remarks on other people's conversations, something to keep me from getting bored. Occasionally, there would be people who would send me private messages, or instant messages, but I would bump them or ignore them all. But this one night, I was so lonely and bored that I would talk to anyone who would send me a PM. Just then, some person online PM'd me. I took on a chance to talk to the person, whoever he/she was.

'Can everyone mute?' Coronavirus means we must telecommute. We're not ready
On Thursday morning, as the number of new coronavirus cases in California climbed past 50, crates of telecommunications equipment and prefabricated sound isolation booths started arriving at the Playa Vista headquarters of ICANN, the organization tasked with overseeing the deepest levels of the internet.
ICANN, which stands for Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, was originally set to hold its March meeting in Cancún, where policy and tech wonks from around the world would convene to hammer out the minutiae of global internet governance.
Instead, they decided to host in Los Angeles what might be the world’s largest-ever working conference call.
Nearly 3,000 people from 150 countries speaking three live-translated languages will participate for four days, with quick-turnaround transcriptions translated into all the official languages of the U.N. to make sure no one is left out of the discussion.
The operation is running on Zoom, the teleconferencing platform whose stock has surged nearly 70% since the beginning of the year in response to the virus-driven demand for telecommuting, augmented by software and systems that ICANN has built over the years to facilitate mass meetings and quick translation.
While Zoom can handle videoconferences at a large scale, the conference is defaulting to voice-only communications since many participants will dial in from countries with unreliable internet service. Zoom has committed to having its head of operations on standby to help work out any kinks.
When asked whether this emergency operation was guaranteed to go off without a hitch when it begins on Saturday, ICANN Chief Information Officer Ashwin Rangan let out a laugh.
“We are testing out a lot of things in real time,” Rangan said. “We are creating backup plans and plan Cs and testing them all as I speak.”
Translation: going virtual on this scale is a step into uncharted territory — and a step that more and more businesses are taking in response to COVID-19.
In the past week, companies across the U.S. have started canceling major conferences, halting most business travel and urging employees to work from home in response to the growing viral outbreak in the country. Few will require telecom operations as vast and complicated as ICANN’s, but as companies such as Twitter and Microsoft start shifting to virtual work en masse, the vision of a decentralized work world long promised by telecommuting evangelists is starting to materialize.
But is the technology itself — and the American workplace — ready to go fully remote?
Even as the tools have improved, with Zoom and the collaboration tools such as Slack taking the place of landline conference calls and endless email chains and telepresence robots offering remote workers a chance to amble around the office, the stubborn problem of human error persists.
Stories of getting caught out in pajamas on video calls, or mysterious heavy breathing on mass dial-ins, have become common parts of the work experience as part-time telecommuting becomes a standard feature of office life. Maybe the next generation of remote-work tech, which is likely to include full virtual reality, will solve these hiccups; almost certainly, it will bring new ones.
Shannon Engoian, an ad agency account director, got an unsettling glimpse of the future in the early 2010s, when her firm pitched the company that made the open-ended multiplayer video game “Second Life” — in “Second Life.”
Engoian recalled how her team had to make digital avatars to attend the in-game meeting with the company’s senior executives, then spent some time practicing how to navigate the virtual space.
But when the time for the big meeting came, things did not go as planned.
“This one particular meeting room that they teleported us to for the pitch itself was not a room at all, but was like a bonfire circle on a beach,” Engoian said. “It’s a high stress scenario, a real pitch with real people, so I’m like nervous I’m thinking about my speaking roles and stuff.”
The “Second Life” executives appeared in their virtual avatars — Engoian recalls an inflatable frog and a centaur, among others — and the assembled businesspeople sat down on the log benches around the fire to start their meeting.
“My avatar sits down backwards so that her back is facing the rest of the group,” Engoian recalled. Frantic, she tried getting up and sitting down two or three more times, each time with the same result, until her supervisor pinged her AOL Instant Messenger to tell her to give up. At that point, her computer froze. The last her colleagues saw of her was Engoian “flying up and away out of the meeting forever.”
“I was like, ‘Oh my god, I’m gonna be fired over this,’” Engoian said. (She wasn’t, and they won the account.)
While putting on a digital centaur’s skin to hang out in a video game may not seem like work, research has shown that working from home can yield a net increase in productivity.
A 2017 study out of Stanford Graduate School of Business conducted an experiment that found that remote workers at China’s largest travel agency, Ctrip, saw a 13% bump in productivity compared to their office-bound peers over nine months. A similar study from Harvard Business School looked at U.S. Patent and Trademark Office workers who were allowed to go fully remote, rather than having to check in at the office once a week, and found that they ended up 4.4% more productive overall.
Prithwiraj Choudhury, the lead author on the Harvard study, has continued to research remote work in the U.S. and thinks that employee demand, increasing real estate prices and solid technology are combining to make remote work more attractive today than ever. But the key to pulling it off, he’s found, is creating a new culture for remote work.
“You have to create new processes that support remote work,” Choudhury said. Two major problems are syncing over time zones and fostering a sense of camaraderie over distance.
At the patent office, managers brought remote workers into the fold by delivering personal pizzas to their home offices at the same time that they were calling into a pizza-fueled meeting at HQ.
“If you have a team where some people are remote, you need to recognize the pain that remote people go through,” Choudhury said. “Not just the communication loss but also in some ways the different self-identity.”
In recent years, a number of companies have sprung up to solve workplace problems unique to telecommuting.
One of them, Range, builds tools that help teams with no central office coordinate complicated projects, tracking productivity and progress from afar so that managers can shake the feeling that their direct reports are slacking off at home. Twitter, whichthis week advised all staffers to work from home when possible in response to the virus, is a major client.
“Initially, companies see a benefit when more people go remote, because people aren’t interrupted as much,” said Range co-founder and Chief Product Officer Braden Kowitz. “Then, they start to notice communication breaks down. Then the third thing is that the culture breaks down.”
To solve the communication problem, Range augments its progress-tracking tools with strong meeting facilitation practices drawn from design critiques and old-fashioned handbooks like “Robert’s Rules of Order” — opening with a round-the-table icebreaker to get everyone talking, sticking to clear agendas and only allowing people to speak in strict order so that everyone gets to talk.
To address the social issue, Range had to get a little more creative, building in features that replicate the kind of water-cooler socializing and team bonding that happens when people occupy a shared space.
The company offers a feature that includes 350 questions that teams can use as jumping-off points for non-work conversations, starting with anodyne questions like where people went on recent vacations and then ramping up to more thoughtful, personal questions like how people approach risk, and how they see their clothes reflecting their personalities.
“We looked at ways for teams to build psychological safety and trust,” Kowitz said. “if you’re a team you have to be able to ask each other for help, and in order to ask for help you need to be vulnerable.”
Zapier, a 300-person company whose software automates tasks between web apps, has been fully remote since its start in 2011. Its founders have become evangelists for remote working over the years, commissioning reports on the practice, publishing their Slack etiquette guide as a model and serving as informal advisers to companies considering that path.
“It’s allowed us to tap into a global talent pool in a way nobody else can,” said Wade Foster, Zapier’s chief executive.
The company has kept to its remote-work roots as the software for conference calls and office chatting has changed, and Foster chalks its successup to a few core practices. Zapier has a budget to set up all new hires with a kitted-out home office, requires all meetings to be full video calls, and has a strong onboarding process that teaches employees how to use their customized version of Slack. And it makes sure that everyone writes everything down.
“It takes a level of discipline to document what is going on in the org that many in-office cultures don’t have,” Foster said.
But even in a company that does everything right, not every tech worker is cut out for a fully remote life. Foster said that some potential Zapier recruits have balked at the lack of an office.
“More times than not they end up being successful in the company,” Foster said. “The few times where it doesn’t, I’d say it tends to be with folks who use work as their social outlet.”
And for those who prefer a compromise between the virtual and tangible worlds, there are always robots.
Double Robotics is one of the leading U.S. manufacturers of “telepresence” robots, which display a video feed of a telecommuting worker on a screen attached to a Segway-like wheeled contraption that can be driven remotely. Double’s chief executive, David Cann, says the company has been seeing a surge in orders as coronavirus fears ramp up across the country.
“We’re trying to catch up on orders, we have a backlog now and we’re trying to build as fast as possible,” Cann said.
But the same virus that’s prompting an uptick in orders is posing some problems for the company. The broad shutdown in China, where the original outbreak took place, has squeezed the supply chains that Double relies on to build their products at their Burlingame, Calif., headquarters.
That technology, however, has improved. Until last year, the Double was still essentially a tricked-out ride for an off-the-shelf Apple iPad. Users had to manually steer the Double around the office, and inept driving could get its wheels stuck on a doorframe.

“It wasn’t a big deal, but it’s a little bit embarrassing,” Cann said. But the 2019 model, the Double Three, comes with a built-in tablet screen, and has enough sensors that users can just point-and-click where they want to go within the robot’s field of vision. The Double will glide on over, avoiding objects and edges along the way.
As with other remote working technologies, Cann said that building an office culture around their robots is the surest indicator of a successful transition. Most importantly, the remote worker and all of their coworkers need to be on board with the robot concept.
“For the first day or two, it’s going to be a total novelty — you need to get everyone around and ask all the crazy questions and get that out of the way first,” Cann said. “The next day, it’s just like, ‘Oh, that’s Joe on the robot.’”
