the unfortunate thing about the devil in me (cause i really do like the game to a certain extent) is that i can't get behind one man fucking up 200 people + the main 5 all on his own when we play as highly trained soldiers who solo alien vampires in house of ashes. salim othman would wipe the floor with hector munday in 5 minutes like it wouldn't even be a conversation.

I suppose it's interesting that Rachel doesn't really have to have that question, we know what a lot of the cast believes or doesn't but the assumption would be that if the kings weren't on the same page about religion it would probably be relevant to the relationship friction and much like her not owing a debt to death she doesn't get put in the same position in this either, she gets to espouse an anthropological view outside of her job description without her own beliefs coming into it, not even when someone looks her in the eye on her wedding day and tells her she'll never be as happy again two seconds before the crash, also looping back to Eric as emotional, everyone in the love triangle is including Rachel, just because it's a different type doesn't mean it's not there, that said I can't say how much faith plays into the view of Eric as it could at the least be argued for Rachel and maybe Clarice and at least from my standpoint a character believing the same or not as me never had any type of effect as I'm a little more focused on what they have going on and why rather than how much they align with my beliefs

That said my mention of John's arc being cheapened is entirely from the standpoint of people who profess to love his character then erase important elements by pretending he is less flawed than he is(and for the record I don't think james is horrible either, I actively think all the good and bad traits of all the doubles exist in each iteration), I have seen people wax poetic about how John's arc is about him learning to ask for help when it's not, if he asks for help against his demon he is going to go to hell, his arc is about stepping up and actually filling the role he's already got, it's about not shrinking away from the hard thing and abdicating responsibility and so much more else but tangent aside, so many people claim to love John but because they can't handle their favourite being flawed they end up expressing love for this character they've got in their head that just isn't him(don't mind me, sometimes I see some takes that severely miss the point and it lives rent free in my head after that... That said I have written a number of essays on the characters just to get the mischaracterisation out of my head lol)

Another important thing that the game could have done more with is Eric's disability, like he has so much more to prove even to himself because of that and it can be seen as further adding to his defensiveness over being the unrespected new guy in charge when he's literally coming in with the disadvantages in every way like that

i was playing hoa with a couple of my siblings last week and boy was i IN THE TRENCHES.

here's the thing: you will never catch me calling eric a good person. virtually everything about him is unlikeable, especially in the beginning of the game. main traits are overbearing & insecure, he can't take responsibility for his actions, and he's easily irritated and emotional. and that's just to name a few things. the only things i genuinely appreciate about him are his loyalty and his knowledge. obviously he can become much better depending on how you play him, but overall he is not great. what was actually bothering me was them acting like eric bringing up his and rachel's marriage & falling out was something unheard of.

i know how it feels to be a part of something that you thought was unique and precious, only to find out it was fragile enough that one event--an event that happened to both parties by association but affected you disproportionately--could shatter the entire thing. i know how it feels to have someone tell you since that event you aren't igniting the exact same feelings in them anymore, then be fed hollow excuses that don't even disguise the fact that they blame it on you because every time you attempt to get closure you're told you're guilt-tripping (rachel's line, "don't. i still feel guilty" slapped me in the face the first time i played hoa, and it still gets me whenever i hear it. it's so simple and ambiguous, but it really ate away at me).

duh, staying alive/escaping is the main objective but you cannot tell me that, in those quiet moments, you wouldn't at least be thinking of the same things eric was. if i was placed right before my partner whom i hadn't seen in a year, if we departed each other in the midst of doubt and uncertainty, i would 100% be seeking answers. so yeah. i got a little bit defensive of eric, heh heh.
