SAMANTHA HIGHTOWER (BORN TARLY), LADY OF OLDTOWN

Lady Samantha Tarly, the widow of Lord Ormund Hightower, eventually remarried to his heir and her stepson, Lyonel Hightower, who only reached the age of adulthood at sixteen just as the war ended. While not technically his regent, she was so politically influential that she was considered the functional co-ruler of Oldtown. When Lord Lyonel announced his intention to marry his father's widow, the reigning High Septon forbade the union as a form of incest. However, Lyonel kept Samantha as his paramour for thirteen years and fathered six children on her. Relations between the Hightowers and the Faith of the Seven soured when the High Septon commanded Lady Sam to remove herself from her step-son's bed and take vows as a silent sister as penance. When she refused, the High Septon condemned her as a shameless fornicator and forbade her to set foot in the Starry Sept until she repented. Instead, Samantha mounted a warhorse and burst into the Starry Sept as the High Septon was leading prayer, claiming that while she could not set foot there, the High Septon had said nothing of her horse's hooves, and commanded her men to close the doors, as the sept should be closed to all if it was closed for her. Though the High Septon grew furious, he had no choice but to relent. Lady Sam protected Lotho Rogare after the fall of House Rogare. The Hightowers remained extremely wealthy as they had not entrusted any of their gold to Lys before the Rogare Bank ran dry. Lotho helped Lady Sam found the prosperous Bank of Oldtown.

Chararacter Biography Under the Cut

The sixth child of Lord Clifford and Lady Selyse Rowan, Leona is 27, and married to Lord Alan Tarly. She is the good-sister and closest friend of Samantha Hightower, the Lady of House Hightower of Oldtown, and her husband, Alan, came into his Lordship of Hornhill when his father pased only half a year ago. Alan and Leona have four children together, Rylene, Desmond, Breony, and Marissa, and it was announced a few months ago she's expecting once more, with great hopes they'll finally be blessed with another son. A sociable, pious, and deeply charitable soul, Leona spends the majority of her time not nurturing and teaching her children, coordinating charitable efforts and educational opportunities for young women with Lady Sam, who she has been close with since both were children, but has become her self-declared dearest of friends in her years spent married to Alan. Similarly passionate about fashion and fine embroidery and the whippets favored as companions in both Oldtown and Hornhill, Leona is at her happiest when surrounded by nature, delighting in the hunts her husband and good-brother often hosts. Since its very first day in the shadow of unspeakable grief, Leona has always been her younger sister's, The Lady-Regent Clarice Tyrell, staunchest supporter in her reign as regent, firmly reminding anyone who asks that she would reach the highest of the seven heavens and raise the deepest of the seven hells to support her family, and especially her beloved baby sister. Ser Alliser raged and threatened and called them all cravens and women and worse, yet Sam remained unhurt. A few nights later, at Jon's urging, he joined them for the evening meal, taking a place on the bench beside Halder. It was another fortnight before he found the nerve to join their talk, but in time he was laughing at Pyp's faces and teasing Grenn with the best of them.
