June 15 - Juno Beach
We drove down A1A from Cocoa Beach to Juno Beach. It was an easy, relaxing drive without many cars. We passed through several Beach towns including Vero Beach, but nothing major to see.
What is impressive is the amount of apartments and condos built right on the beach. These are tall buildings, not 3-4 stories high. Most are rentals of people outside of Florida.
At dinner, through a conversation with our nice waiter, we found out that Jupiter/Juno beach area is a very wealthy area. It is the most expensive area in Florida. He mentioned that many celebrities such as Tiger Woods, Celine Dion, and many golf pros live here. It is not uncommon to see fancy, expensive cars. He said that his grandma bought a house in 2016 for 250k and someone offered her over 500K cash! Also the cost of living is getting higher since COVID. Many people from NY, etc are buying here and working remotely.
I noticed that the prices here are definitely higher than in other parts. Local fish at a restaurant was around $44.
We went to the pier and checked out the beach.

First and foremost:
I am absolutely sorry for the last blog post that you may or may not have seen if you subscribe to this blog (It’s gone now). I was not hacked but apparently James was. Also, apparently he was set as a contributor to this blog. So someone hacked into his account and published some sub-par English (like I have any room to complain!) post about something or another… I am sorry to be a cruddy email in your inbox though and thank you so much for those of you who let me know so I could handle it! It has been fixed and I’ll do my very best to not let it happen again!
Quick Recap!
So, 13 months, to the day, is how long we were on the road. And 39,998 miles (I’d like to just round that up bat I can’t do it). In that time we were able to hit 45 national parks (all of them in the lower 48 excluding 4 island parks accessible only by boat or plane). We can all, including Denver, say we’ve been to 48 of the 50 states.
I did technically take a computer but it was not easy to hook it up to the internet (I attached via phone). Then, every time I did my computer wanted to update. So any time I wanted to write a blog post I had to basically wait 2-4 hours and hope I remembered enough to scribble it down. As you can see, I think I wrote about 6 blog posts the whole time we were out and that was from my phone (its not easy to blog via touch pad!). I’m sorry for that but it was a lot more fun exploring the country!! Hopefully, if you wanted you were able to find us on Instagram where I still updated.
We left in the middle of some hot and heavy tiny house discussions and it’s pretty much been tabled the whole time we were away. We are very happy to be back thought to finish working through the nuances and hopefully make it easier to live tiny in Idaho at least!
Before That Happens Though:
We have to find a home base. The thought of mooching off any family while we figure it out is not appealing. We have great tenants in our ‘real’ house and have no ambition to kick them out just so we could live there a little while. We can’t occupy the tiny house. Short term (or long term) rentals are astronomical in Boise right now. (Click here for a special link to Yahoo about our hometown)
This left us with one logical answer. When James moved in to the tiny he never fully downsized. He just kind of put his things in boxes and then built a basic, detached garage for his ‘real house’, then stored all of his stuff in there. So we’re converting that garage into some temporary housing for our family of four!
Our Anniversary
We didn’t just end our trip 13 months to the day after take off, we also ended it one our anniversary. Every year we take a family photo in front of our home as a snapshot of the year. I am glad to get another picture with ‘Lil Beastie! (our camper). Here are our anniversary photos to date, I wonder what next year’s will look like! ha!
We lead a pretty cool life, I am so glad I, on a whim, started taking these pictures!
Year six, can you believe we were on the same vacation as the picture taken one year earlier! 🙂
Year Five, new home on wheels for a while
Year four, no new family members!, yea!
Year three, Miles is just about done cooking!
Year two, surprise baby Hazel!
Year one, the day Denver came to live with us!
First date – who even gets this picture??
Now The Downsizing Begins Again!
James has been hardcore into the real downsizing efforts. A year on the road has been pretty eye opening for both of us on what we really need (spoiler: less than what we currently own!). Honestly, I have cleared the tiny house of several truck loads of stuff! Our kids have grown up in a year and they really don’t need all the baby stuff we had. James has gone through box upon box. We’ve taken two truck loads to the dump, were planning a yard sale for anything else. Whatever doesn’t sell will be donated to start a new life elsewhere. Hazel and Miles have been going through all their stuff, they are excited to earn money from their toys AND plan on hosting a lemonade stand for cool refreshments. I absolutely cannot believe the amount of STUFF we have accumulated in our tiny little places!
Building Anew!
After this weekend we really get going! We will be adding a kitchen, a custom playhouse/fort for the kids, and doing all those little projects that take a garage to a home for a family of four and their dog! I will try to do updates because its totally relevant to ‘tiny homes’ and living in small spaces. Sometimes Instagram is just easier for me because it’s quicker (and can be done from my phone). I will definitely update on the legalities once that conversation gets going too. I am happy to be back and ready to rock this world again! In the mean time here are some of my favorite pictures of our adventures!
Also, this is not the end of our travels, we absolutely plan to make it to those four parks we skipped and are already planning our trip to Alaska (my last state) for next summer followed by celebrating James’s 40th birthday next fall in Hawaii! We should be able to see all these amazing National Parks before too long!
Oh, P.S.
Our cat is mad we are back. Did you know we had a cat? It’s probably because I am a dog person ;-).
He misses his bachelors pad and all the fancy parties he used to throw! While we were away we had an RFID cat door programmed to his microchip so that he could enter and exit the house at will (but nothing else could). We set up a camera pointed at his food so we could make sure he was alive and eating. Any time the food got low we would order another bag from Amazon and have James’s sister or mom run over and fill his dish. Pretty sure he enjoyed that set up a whole lot more than he enjoys our company!

The fact that it has only been one day here blows my mind. I feel like we have been here for weeks. And that’s a good thing of course. ☀️☀️☀️
I’ve been counting down the days til take-off to sunny Orlando and it finally came. We left last night on a red-eye flight, which isn’t really fun but definitely cheap. It felt long, just because trying to sleep was uncomfortable and time dragged.
When we landed, it was almost 5 AM. It’s a whole different experience traveling with someone who is older than you because they can get a rental car, and not be stranded with a lack of public transportation. (Here’s to you, Glen.)
We drove to Given’s house to crash for a couple of hours since it was way to early to check into our hotel. We stayed up way too long booking fast passes and catching up. Eventually though, Kena and I ended up blacked out on one couch and Glen slept on the other smaller one. Before too long, maybe an hour or so, all of Given’s roommates were up and moving for the day. So we were too. (Side story: What a small world. One of Given’s roommates is Steve Wilcox! We went to school with his younger brother Scott. What are the odds.)
We got ready and headed to the coast! First stop, Kennedy Space Center. I’ve always been fascinated with space, so I was excited. We got to see real space shuttles, and learn a lot of history. We participated in an astronaut space-walking training in micro-gravity which was super fun. There were three roles - the trainee, the helper, and the commanding officer who sat at the computer and gave directions over a headset. We got to try all three roles, and worked really well together as a team! It was fun. Another highlight was the simulated shuttle launch. That was our longest wait of the day, but it was totally worth it. So great. I sort of want to be an astronaut except it’s also sort of terrifying. We got to sit in some of the small capsules some astronauts were trapped in for 14 days, unable to stretch their legs or move at all. Totally freaked me out, and made me feel claustrophobic. But still, space is cool. 🌙⭐️💫🌖
After that, we went to the beach! Can’t go to Florida and not spend some time at the beach. It’s amazing to have these kind of temperatures in February. It’s like we skipped straight to summer and I couldn’t be happier about it. (The humidity isn’t my favorite though, obviously.) The beach we picked, Cocoa Beach, was surrounded by beautiful green trails and plant life. Florida is gorg people. I don’t remember a lot from my last trip here, but this one I won’t forget.
The beach itself was awesome too. White, soft sand and a perfect temperature ocean. The only scary part was that a ton of a certain species of jelly fish had washed up on shore. A little girl tried to pick one up and she got shocked and it wouldn’t let go of her hand. Hopefully she’s ok! We really had to watch our step once we realized. People were taking it upon themselves to circle them in the sand as a warning to others, so we helped a bit. It was kind of cool to see a real life jelly fish though.
I’m obsessed with the ocean, and walking along the beach letting the waves hit my feet. It’s definitely one of my most serene places.
After we drove back to our hotel, we checked in and went to grab our luggage from Given’s. We ate some food, grabbed a few things from the store, and came back to sleep because we are exhausted. And of course, our hotel room was disgusting. We couldn’t handle it. Glen talked to management and they gave us a new room, so we are happy about that.
Goodnight kids. Disney awaits, and I need some energy. 😴

Holiday to Florida in Dec 2019: Summary
Another holiday completed; another trip to Florida. Not quite as exciting as some. Vick being ill for some of the time dampened her spirits at times on this trip.
Flights
BA were reliable as always. No delays; no dramas; just delivered good quality service, on time - just what we needed. I’m a little tired of the 747 now, but if we are flying through JFK its not always easy to avoid the jumbo. BA food was excellent, both on flights and in the lounges we visited.
AA were equally reliable, but there’s no comparison in terms of cabin crew. AA flights feel more like getting a seat on a bus. The AA Flagship Lounge at Miami is really good - on a par with LAX now.
Cocoa Beach
The Hilton at Cocoa Beach was very comfortable, and effectively we had the best room in the place, with lots of space. The weather wasn’t really conducive to doing too much outside activity, but we enjoyed our day out to Kennedy Space Centre, even in the rain.
Sarasota
The Homewood Suites at University Town Center (UTC) was fresh and new, but the rooms were a tad more compact than we would have liked. We also had some challenges with staff not being completely honest with us at times. UTC was alive with lights celebrating Christmas, and there was lots going on.
We had a nice trip out to the Botanical Gardens in Sarasota, and the Bayfront area is a nice place to spend some time. How will I ever recover from that Garlic Bomb Philly Cheesesteak?
Naples
The Hilton at Naples is our go-to hotel in the area. It’s a great place to stay, with a nice pool and really friendly staff. It offered a very tasteful Christmas make over. But the in-house steak restaurant (Shula’s) is a bit too expensive now.
The Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary always offers an interesting and soothing half day out. Lots of interesting wildlife to see, especially the racoons.
Our Hertz Car Rental - Camaro SS
The beast was a real treat, and in red it was our perfect hire car.

If you’re ready to sit down and relax for a bit, sample local seafood or land lover’s delights at Pelican’s Bar and Grill, Keith’s Oyster Bar, or The Boardwalk Bar. Each of these restaurants features a kid’s menu and a great ocean view. After you eat, take the kids to Mission Control game room for an exciting round of arcade games.

The Tiny Turtle also features quinoa bowls or wraps for vegetarian options.
5. Fat Kahuna’s
A casual atmosphere that is welcoming to all meets a fine dining experience at Fat Kahuna’s. Start off with chips with black bean hummus and a cold pineapple mango sangria to drink. 8. Green Room Cafe
Health enthusiasts and their families love eating at the Green Room Cafe, featuring organic food choices and healthy kids meals. Children 11 years old and under can order from the kid’s menu, which features delicious options such as a peanut butter, banana and honey sandwich, cheese quesadilla, or soft tacos with a chicken-less patty. Adults love the unique sandwich offerings here, especially the Ruebio, a healthy yet tasty spin on a classic Reuben sandwich.
9. Nolan’s Irish Pub

10. Jazzy’s Mainly Lobster and Seafood Company

20 Fun, Free Things to Do in Orlando (Because Disney Gets Expensive)
When you think of Orlando, you might think Disney.
That’s fair. Heck, I’m a native Floridian, and I thought that most of my life — until I actually moved to Orlando.
Sure, Disney is great and all, but the truth is The City Beautiful has a lot to offer outside the parks. And what’s better? There are plenty of free things to do here — things that don’t cost you hundreds of dollars just to gain entry…
20 Fun Things to Do in Orlando for Free
Whether you live here in Orlando or are planning your next trip, here are 20 free things to do.
1. Winter Park Farmers’ Market
Explore the local vendors at the Winter Park Farmers’ Market, hosted at the old train depot each Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Note: The market is closed on every third Saturday in March due to the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival, one of the oldest and largest outdoor art festivals in the country. It’s definitely worth checking out if you’re in town — and it’s free.
Afterwards, explore Park Avenue, which is laced with shops, restaurants, museums and theaters.
2. Lake Eola
Butting up to the heart of downtown Orlando, Lake Eola offers Insta-worthy views, a .9-mile walking sidewalk and some very large swans. (Really, they’re huge.) If you’re there on a Sunday, stop by the market.
Throughout the year, there are tons of free activities (like movie showings), so bookmark this calendar.
3. Lakeridge Winery
Want a real taste of Florida? And maybe a buzz? Lakeridge Winery & Vineyards rests on a 127-acre estate in Clermont, Florida, and serves award-winning wines. A tour and a tasting are free.
Keep an eye on upcoming events, too, like the free summer music series or the grape-stomping competition, which the kids will get into for free and will love.
4. Old Town in Kissimmee
Free to enter and peruse, Old Town is a retro landmark that offers amusement rides, souvenir shops and lots of food options.
On Friday and Saturday nights, secure a spot on the sidewalk, and watch muscle and classic cars make their way down Main Street.
5. Orlando Brewing
Embark on a free tour of Orlando Brewing, Monday through Saturday at 6 p.m. Once you appreciate where the beer comes from, start sippin’.
Pro Tip
If you want to do a beer tasting, check Groupon. You can usually find 50%-off deals for parties of two.
6. Big Tree Park
This park was once famous for The Senator, a 3,500-year-old bald cypress tree that burned down in 2012 due to a drug-fueled incident. (Long story.)
Although The Senator no longer remains (RIP), you’ll still find its memorial, as well as its 2,000-year-old sister tree, Lady Liberty.
Plus, there’s a nice trail and playground, and the shade will protect you from the Florida sun.
Pro Tip
If you're planning an outdoor activity in the summer, pack plenty of sunscreen and bug spray.
7. Disney Springs
Formerly known as Downtown Disney, Disney Springs is a lakeside corridor of shops, restaurants, bars and entertainment.
You don’t have to spend money to enjoy the lively outdoor atmosphere. There’s also a water taxi you can take from one end to the other. Plus, parking is free, which is hard to come by in Orlando.
Bonus: You’ll find the Lego Store here, a wonderland of blocks that kids — and adults — will get lost in for hours. You don’t have to pay to play!
8. Cornell Fine Arts Museum
On the beautiful campus of Rollins College, the Cornell Fine Arts Museum holds more than 500 paintings and a whole lot of artifacts and archaeological fragments. Plan to stop by for a free 30-minute guided tour.
(Note: It’s closed on Mondays.)
9. Disney’s Boardwalk
Tucked between Epcot and Hollywood Studios, Disney Boardwalk transports you to Coney Island in the 1920s.
Relax a bit as you walk along Crescent Lake, watch the street magicians perform and take in the fragrant funnel cakes. Parking is free.
Pro tip: You can catch the Magic Kingdom’s fireworks display from here, too.
9. CityArts Factory
Tucked between Lake Eola and I-4 in a 130-year-old building, the CityArts Factory houses works from local artists, as well as international pieces — all rotated in and out each month.
Admission is free Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
10. Winter Park
Stop by the Winter Park Historical Museum (in the Winter Park Farmers Market building) to pick up a free walking tour brochure. On it, you’ll find 21 stops, including the Winter Park Railroad Station, Knowles Cottage and the Colony Theatre.
(You can find more walking maps on the City of Winter Park’s website.)
11. Celebration Town Center
This “perfect town” was designed by Disney and is lined with pastel-colored houses and white picket fences. Many people visit to take in the pleasant sights and walk around the lake.
The town’s center is host to a number of dining, entertainment and shopping options. Keep tabs on upcoming events, like exotic car shows and arts strolls.
12. Black Hammock Adventures
Black Hammock Adventures is situated on Lake Jesup, which is home to something like 9,000 gators (the largest concentration of ’em in the States). You also might spot bald eagles, wild boars, bobcats — you name it.
According to its website, you can view free gator feedings — depending on the weather. If you want to splurge, there are airboat rides, too.
13. Cocoa Beach
The closest beach to Orlando is Cocoa Beach, which is about an hour away (depending on where you’re staying).
Parking for the popular Alan Shepard Park is $15, but Lori Wilson Park, right down the road, is free.
There’s even a dog park if your furry friend wants to tag along.
14. Fort Christmas
If you decide to head to the beach, stop by Fort Christmas Historical Park on your way.
Built during the Second Seminole War, the site features a full-size replica of Fort Christmas and seven historical “Cracker-style” homes. Listen to video presentations before enjoying a picnic under one of the pavilions.
Check for free events, too, like the annual bluegrass festival in March and Cracker Christmas in December.
15. Kraft Azalea Garden
Pack a picnic and soak up the serenity this lakeside park offers. Then break out your bird-watching binoculars, and see what you can spot.
Pro Tip
The azaleas in Florida tend to bloom from late February to early April if you want a colorful show. If you miss that window, opt for one of Florida’s classic colorful sunsets instead.
16. Grand Bohemian Gallery
If you *heart* art, stop by the beautiful Grand Bohemian Gallery — even if you’re not staying at the hotel.
Parking downtown might be tricky, but use ParkMe to find your cheapest option (like the $2 City Commons Garage).
17. Tasty Tuesdays
The Milk District (named for its proximity to T.G. Lee Dairy) is known for Tasty Tuesdays, a gathering of local food trucks each Tuesday, 6:30-10 p.m. Bring the kids — or your dog — and check out the live music and neighborly festivities.
18. Universal CityWalk
After 6 p.m., park for free, and take in the big lights of Universal CityWalk, which is comparable to Vegas — without the slots.
There’s also a fountain the kids can splash in. In the summer, keep an eye out for free concerts.
19. Chip ’n Dale’s Campfire Sing-a-Long
Saddle in fireside, and join these adorable chipmunks as you roast s’mores and warm up your vocals. You can even snap a photo and snag an autograph.
To save even more money, bring your own marshmallows and sticks. The shenanigans start at 8 p.m.
20. Spook Hill
If you really want to embark on an adventure, head south a ways to Lake Wales. Around 600 N. Wales Dr., you’ll find a sign marking “The Legend of Spook Hill.”
Pull over, and read the story, then follow the directions. Apparently, if you do it right, your car will roll uphill.
The TripAdvisor reviews are mixed, so don’t go too far out of your way for this local haunt.
Bonus: Wekiva Island
Enter this environmentally friendly oasis on the Wekiva River for $2 per person. Hang out dockside, or float around while listening to live bands.
If you want to get adventurous, you can rent a kayak, canoe or paddleboard; a half-day rental costs less than $40. When you get tired, stop by the Tooting Otter for a snack and a craft beer.
Pro Tip
Get $1 off beer and wine during happy hour, which runs 5-7 p.m.
Note: We know many of you like to resort pool hop. Unfortunately many hotels don’t appreciate it, so that’s why we didn’t include the suggestion. Get kicked out of your own free will.

19 Best Kid-Friendly Family Vacations In America
Family life. It can be wonderful and exhausting in equal measure. That’s why The Great Family Vacation is so important—a time to make memories and celebrate your loved ones away from the pressures of daily life. Whether you’ve got a family of ten or two, here are the best family vacation ideas your kids will love, where boredom is banned and fun is king.
Best Vacation Ideas For Families
With so many great family-friendly destinations in the USA, it’s hard to narrow down to the cream of the crop. While we’ve left out a few of the obvious big-hitters like Orlando, Virginia Beach, San Diego, and Myrtle Beach, we’re featuring equally amazing spots, where the amenities for children are just as great and the welcome just as warm.
An added benefit? These top family vacation spots boast plenty of local rentals from FlipKey. Choose an entire house or apartment where you can all be together (while still having your own space). Swap the hotel mini-bar for a fully stocked kitchen and the communal lobby for a family living area—and maybe even a garden. Imagine an evening barbecue on the outdoor patio, a family movie night in the theater room, or a morning swim in your own private pool.
Ready for a fun-fueled family trip? Pack your sunblock, swimwear, and those all-important traveling snacks. Here are 19 of the best family vacation ideas in America for happy kids and even happier grown-ups.
Anaheim, California
“This home was perfect for young and old. Very close to Disneyland and shopping. The pool was the favorite for relaxing and cooling off. Very friendly owners.” — FlipKey Reviewer
The most obvious pull for children in sunny Anaheim is the mighty Disneyland Park—and who could blame them for begging to come here? Rides for all ages, well-known characters to meet, and all the color and excitement you’d expect from a larger-than-life Disney experience. If you’re looking for something on a smaller scale, book a pass to Adventure City. With rides, shows, and a mini train, it’s especially suited to younger children.

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
“We came to Gettysburg to visit history and were not disappointed. The house just made things very simple for us. Everything we needed was there. Great literature to assist us on our history tour. The house was clean and well kept. It was located very conveniently for touring all of Gettysburg.” — FlipKey Reviewer
Steeped in Civil War history, the picturesque town of Gettysburg makes a pleasant and educational base for families. Tour the Gettysburg Battlefield, the National Military Park, and the Shriver House Museum at your leisure, or hop on a guided bus tour of the town to get the expert lowdown on all the key sights. From historical re-enactments to ghostly tours, there’s so much here to keep the whole family entertained.

Boston, Massachusetts
“We regularly stay in rented accommodation rather than hotels when we go on holiday, and this is one of the best we’ve experienced. The house is very comfortable, and well furnished and equipped.” — FlipKey Reviewer
Boston has it all—the culture, the fantastic city parks, and a relaxed pace you might not expect in a city of its size. Baseball fanatics, young and not so young, will love Fenway Park, home of the Red Sox. You can take a guided tour, watch a game, and soak up some sporting history. Also check out the giant ocean tank at the New England Aquarium and board a Boston Duck Tour to be transported around this beautiful city on land and water.

Florida Space Coast
The vibe on the Florida Space Coast is, overall, beachy and relaxed, but a vacationer’s experience depends largely on the activity you choose. Of course, they don’t call it the “Space Coast” for nothing. The thrill of watching rockets launch from Cape Canaveral, whether up close or miles away, never gets old. In fact, launches still occur (SpaceX rockets are on the launch calendar for 2017). Kennedy Space Center unpacks space-centric surprises, from the earliest days of space exploration to the exciting Shuttle Launch Experience and behind-the-gates tours.
As for terra firma, beautiful Atlantic beaches await, along with wildlife at the Canaveral National Seashore, a beautiful barrier island National Park. And even if you’re not shipping out for a cruise, you and your family can marvel at large luxurious ships from Grills Seafood Deck, a family-friendly and casual venue.
Over in Cocoa Beach, you can sink your toes into the sand—but if you have teens, be sure to pop in for a ubiquitous (free!) sticker at Ron Jon’s massive surf shop. You may want to pick up a bikini or t-shirt while you’re at it, too.
Satellite Beach is a lesser-known but equally lovely section of the Atlantic coast. If you’re planning on visiting in June or July, you can enjoy sea turtle nesting season. Check in with the Sea Turtle Preservation Society for a guided tour. Once booked, you’ll be led out by expert guides equipped with the knowledge (and turtle-friendly lighting) to find mama turtles as they venture onshore to lay their eggs. Truly amazing!

Long Beach, California
“This adorable house was very comfortable and had every amenity needed for a family vacation. Everything was close by, from amazing restaurants to cute shops, and of course the beach. I was impressed at how quickly we were able to get to Disneyland and down the coast to Newport Beach.” — FlipKey Reviewer
Locals refer to Long Beach as one giant playground, so families are certainly welcome here. And there’s one place you really can’t miss. More than 11,000 creatures await you at the Aquarium of the Pacific—you can even touch and feed some of them. Learn about who lives in and around the oceans and the importance of conserving their environment. Long Beach also has lots of family-oriented places to eat and plenty of fun watery activities, including boat tours.

Washington, DC
Washington, DC is a vibrant city with dozens of free attractions and events that make it an ideal destination for a family vacation. Once you’re near the Mall, major landmarks and iconic government buildings are everywhere you look: the Capitol, the White House, the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, and many more. Have your kids pull out their coins and dollar bills to see replicas of the very buildings they’re standing in front of. Book a line-skipping VIP tour and check them all off your list.
The internationally-renowned collections of the Smithsonian range from a 65-million-year-old Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton to the original “Star-Spangled Banner” to the space shuttle Discovery. The Einstein Planetarium at the Air and Space Museum offers a constant flow of illuminating, family-friendly entertainment. The airplane buffs in your family will be happy they made the trek to Dulles Airport for the Udvar-Hazy Center, an annex of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. It’s so large that the actual planes dangling from its ceiling look like toys.
The riverfront Nationals Park is a wholesome itinerary option for families who like major league baseball. Its neighborhood goes by many names at this point—Navy Yard, Ballpark District and Capitol Riverfront—but is easy to reach from any area of the city.

Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin
Billed as the Waterpark Capital of the World, Wisconsin Dells is an obvious choice for fun-seeking families. It’s hard to experience all the great attractions and activities here. Take your pick of indoor and outdoor adventures, such as Mt. Olympus Water and Theme Park, Noah’s Ark Waterpark, Timber Falls Adventure Park, Circus World, Timbavati Wildlife Park…the list goes on and on.

Durham, New York
Set in the Northern Catskills, where there’s lots of fresh air and space to run around, Durham makes a top family vacation base. Show your brood the best of the rural life on a tour with Farmer Frank of Hull-O Farms, where you’ll meet all sorts of friendly animals, including bunnies, piglets, and chicks. For something completely different, try the Zoom Flume Water Park, where you can rent a cabana and spend the day crashing into the water via various high-speed slides.

Winter Haven, Florida
Your child may be on his or her way to being a master builder—or not—but either way, few Florida destinations are as child-friendly as Winter Haven. That’s because of the incredible LEGOLAND. This child-centric haven is practically overflowing with Lego bricks. What’s more, every ride in the elevator is a strobe-infused opportunity to do a happy dance, and every room is themed—from pirates to knights to adventurers.
Steps away are Legoland’s theme park and waterpark. The theme park’s coasters, rides and Lego-centric sites keep the entertainment going nonstop. The waterpark’s lazy rivers, wave pools, slides, and other cooling spots offer a fun respite from the Florida heat.
Parents should note that although the LEGOLAND attractions are decidedly for youngsters, the ease with which you’ll be able to move from one to the next make it appealing for parents looking for recreation that’s a little more self-contained. As a bonus, you can also enjoy a tropical cocktail by the pool while watching your kiddos.

Indianapolis, Indiana
Indy’s a pretty hospitable place. And if you’re visiting with children, there’s no better starting point than the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, the largest of its kind in the world. We challenge anyone to be bored in this place, where kids are encouraged to explore arts and culture through exhibits, workshops, and live performances—there’s even a steam engine. You might also like to see the animals and plant life at Indianapolis Zoo.

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware
This friendly place on the Atlantic Coast has a boardwalk packed with lively eateries. Families tend to favor Funland for its arcade games and vintage rides and Jungle Jim’s Water Park for water slides, go-karting and mini-golf. For a bit of calm before bedtime, you could head slightly north and take a Broadkill River cruise with Caper Water Tours and Taxi, taking in the peaceful views of the shoreline and its birdlife before the sun sets.

Williamsburg, Virginia
Colonial Williamsburg, the 301-acre, restored 18th-century capital city, is America’s largest interactive history museum. Its interpretive characters transport visiting families back in time, to the sound of beating drums and trilling fifes.
Virginia’s Historic Triangle extends to nearby Jamestown and Yorktown, where innovative exhibits and educational experiences depict America’s first permanent English colony and guide visitors through the battlefield where American independence was won. Merchants Square, an 18th-century-style village, includes more than 40 shops and restaurants ranging from family-style to fine dining.
The family-friendly Williamsburg area is also home to Busch Gardens, an action-packed, European-themed adventure park; Water Country USA, Virginia’s largest water park; and the York and James Rivers, where you can enjoy beautiful scenery and outdoor activities such as fishing, boating and swimming.

Sandusky, Ohio
Located on the southern edge of Lake Erie is chilled-out Sandusky. This place is home to the Cedar Point amusement park, which draws rollercoaster-crazy visitors each year. It’s mostly for the thrill-seekers, but there are also gentler options available for younger children. Alternatively, you can take jet skis out on the lake or enjoy a stroll with stunning views along the Sandusky Bay Pathway.

Bloomington, Minnesota
Book a comfortable family rental as your base for exploring the child-friendly delights of Bloomington. We recommend starting with Nickelodeon Universe, a fun-packed indoor park in the Mall of America, with everything from the tamest of rides to zip-lining adventures.
