duke, heading into the kitchen:
doug, watching from the couch as the kitchen suddenly starts lighting up like someone is arc welding in there:
duke, walking out with a steaming mug of tea:
doug, turning to elaine who is doing a sudoku with her legs thrown over his lap: "your son-"
elaine, raising an eyebrow: "My son?"
doug: "He's your son when he does something freaky."

HOT-WATER BOTTLE, 1999
Prototype for radiator, painted wood Emma Quickenden, b. 1976
Kingston University, United Kingdom
Photographed by Malcolm Kennard
This prototype is for a rubber radiator that would encase metal plumbing pipes inside a resilient skin, exchanging a harsh industrial vernacular for softer forms. The circular grooves in the surface resemble stylized, standardized fingerprints. The object modeled after a hot-water bottle evokes the antiseptic comforts of nursing care as well as tactility and warmth, reflecting the overtly technological, clinically erotic attitude of the new design organics.

so for the last month, my radiator (and only my radiator) has been acting up intermittently (previously documented in the tags here): turning on at random hours, mostly in the middle of the night, and occasionally driving me out of my room with how hot it gets
this week's radiator saga updates are:
landlord and HVAC technician came by on Monday and were stumped
landlord dropped off an infrared thermometer on Wednesday and gave me a list of places whose temperatures to check saying “your room and radiator are most important but if you’re feeling ambitious here’s a bunch of pipes in the basement”
so now i have a spreadsheet that documents my terrible sleep this past three days and how it correlates to the temperatures in my room!
(only my room though because I've also been healing from a foot surgery this past month and stairs have been hard)
this morning i finally had the wherewithal to make it to the basement when my radiator was doing its thing and the pipes that OSTENSIBLY go to my room were in the low 60s while my radiator was on at full blast, so I can only conclude that my radiator is secretly connected to another house, possibly in the demon realm

i have basically zero fossil fuel dependence in my everyday life bc i don't have gas at home, just electricity from renewables, and i cycle everywhere / don't have a car. this is great for my general sense of environmental smugness, i am about as environmentally friendly as i can get while not being able to avoid plastic packaging or change my diet at all due to allergies, but OH MY GOD it's so expensive. we gotta make these options cheaper for real like you can't take gas central heating away from people when electric costs this much

oh and I also don’t have hot water
I didn’t notice that one, because I am Confined To My Blanket Pile and too cold to move from it to explore things like kitchen sinks
but I was texting with a downstairs neighbor, who says her heat has been fine, but hot water is out for the whole building
to reiterate. the city declared a “cold emergency” and closed schools yesterday because it was too cold. it is That Cold. I first called building maintenance 16 hours ago expressing concern that my heat wasn’t working in a cold-emergency and they blew me off, and I’m still waiting on a heat fix

It is so cold in my apartment and the heat comes on so inconsistently no matter what it’s set at. So why are we paying $115 a month for heat rn.

i look forward to the future when i have a home that can be heated adequately in winter... i love the season and i love the snow so much, but it's not something my body can handle well. i don't think i'd mind it so much if i could be warm for at least a few hours a day during these long cold months >_<

lads i am Fucking Mad
not only did my car battery die (i guess due to the cold???? idk man it's not that cold) today but even after maintenance came by to fix the radiator leaking it stopped for like a few hours and then randomly started hissing and leaking scalding hot water fast enough to completely soak two hand towels in about 5 minutes (:
