Despite years of trampling by ice boars and donkeyotes, the wide main street of The Howl refused to get tamped to anything entirely like solid ground. Burned cold slop hungry and heavy and tenacious, dark enough to drown the human heart and just about as thick. Laika had a couple heavy coats tied together at the arms draped around her body like a poncho, along with the improvised envirosuit and her fur all working overtime to keep her lungs, blood, and every other drop of liquid in her body from crystalizing, and even on the relatively short 500 meter walk through town the ache of her leg was coming back. Her bones and muscles transmuted the warmth of her clothes into an aching chill cross the stitched up swath the silver slug had carved out of her thigh.
Sy looked up, his whole face swaddled in cloth and bulked out into shapelessness by a heavy coat. "Wow Laika, it's sure fun seeing the sights. We should really take a look around more as long as we're here."
Most of the buildings were the same corrosion resistant steel as the blast walls, with welded characters that Laika couldn't read. The phosphor of a genus loci outlined and lit the doorways, a caution against the heavily built up trails of mud and rain coating most of the outer walls. In some places the buildings were buried along one side, cleared only so far as needed for doors or windows or street access. They'd only seen a couple of the squat sauropod donkeyotes clipped up to one building, and another way down near the loading pen and shipping bay at the far end of town, pulling a cart off towards the ranches. The clear sky was little more than a less dark gray than a stormy one.
Doc seemed to have the least trouble with the mud. Laika couldn't figure quite how the woman was doing it, but she'd just dip her feet and slide them out. "Sloane, how do you do that?"
"Salamander juice," she said. "And it's Doctor Sloane please. Look, a hardware store!" She pointed.
"You can read those?"
"Linguist!" They trudged past the hardware store and a couple houses across from it. "See? That's where they eat horses." Doc squinted at the long building. "I meant to say that's an animal hospital." It was a slow walk past. Someone sat wrapped up in heavy clothing with a pipe poked out, waved at them, Laika waved back.
"This ticket's bombing," Doc said, giving Laika a pat on the hip. She turned to walk back the way they came.
"Hey," Sy called, "what are those two up there? Where do you think you're going?"
Doc pointed at the barely different blocks, last stops before the big ice boar shipping port. "General store. Bar and hotel." She pointed back the other way and grinned excitedly. "Hardware store!"
"It's probably fine," Sy said to Laika, while Doc marched away repeating hardware store in time to her footsteps. "Anyway, why don't we see about some supplies while we're here," he thumbed at the general store.
"Did we run out of burritos?"
"Okay. Burritos aren't... Y'know, why don't I see, and you wait in the bar."
A minute later, Laika ducked her way through the airlock into the bar, pulling off her envirosuit mask and shoving aside her coats against the balmy 3°C interior. It wasn't much to speak of, all rubberized floor, stamped steel tables and chairs, while the bar itself looked to slapped together from leftover cinderblocks and some unused insulated resin window bricks. All about a dozen people proped on their tables and a bar she shouldered no one aside to take up two seats alone. There wasn't a single other person at the bar including the bartender, so she pulled her phone to text GK.
"U okay? How's Peng?"
"There is little on this world to engage my attention, although the chemical makeup of the soil is impressive for its exceptionally low temperature solid state. A more advanced civilation might make better use of this world than a meat breeding site."
"Rest is same. :/ Nothing here, hope we leave soon. Peng started repairs?"
"I am currently covered in a multitude of analytical drones, which appear to be operated by Peng utilizing some form of biomechanical interface. I understand the necessity of this process of assessment, but I do not enjoy it. It is uncomfortable and degrading."
"Sorry :( U want to go?"
"Peng appears competent and works with adequate efficiency for someone of your civilization. I will tolerate the indignity for the time. You should obtain some supplies in addition to frozen burritos. You may suffer from malnutrition otherwise."
"Sy getting some. U want anything? Bumper sticker? Lol."
A voice broke into her chat, and she didn't see the reponse. "Excuse me ma'am. I am sorry to interrupt, but I must ask a moment of your time."
Same as everyone, he was swallowed in bulky warm gear, though Laika could read the dollars layering the smooth texture and even fit of his overcoat around him, tethering a man on either side of him. She assumed normally they would be imposing and tall, if she wasn't half a meter taller than both without standing up. The man with the money had a gloved hand partly out, palm up half in offer, half in peace. "My name is Roman Volkon." He gestured to the other men. "This is my associate, Yuri. And this too is Yuri, my other associate."
"Uh, sure, nice to meet you." She didn't stick a hand out, unsure if it was just Roman's chlorine clear eyes, the way his smile stretched with geometic precision too far out, or the shellac of swept back blonde hair. Or it might be the cybernetic augmentations on the Yuris, who knew.
"Please," he held up both hands. "This pleasure is mine. So rare to encounter such magnificence as yourself in the civ. Especially so distant as Dola. I felt I should offer respect due to one such as yourself."
"Okay." She specced the other tables and saw at least a couple people who looked like living stone, and possibly some operators. "Well, uh, respect given, thank you." In the far corner were a couple less warmly dressed and less violently modified individuals, watching the stone men and Roman and the whole room with poorly concealed fear.
"Wait. Ah. I am what you may call, that is I have specialized skills in retrieval. I think it is perhaps luck for us both, this meeting. What you would call serendipity. As this very moment I am engaged in work of retrieval which has great value. And here I see you, and I think you may like, how would you call it, a quick buck."
"Er....uh." She glanced ocer at the man and woman in the corner. Dark slacks, white shirt. No bartender or waitress wandering around. "That's great but like, we're just passing through."
"Of course, of course." His smile curved up at the edges. "It is very easy, this retrieval. For such as you, no difficultly at all. You could have," Roman looked her up and down, "300K convertible pattern for a single hour of time and recovery of very small case."
"What's the- No, sorry. Look, I'm. I appreciate this, I do, but like, I'm not here long at all. Thank you."
"A very decisive choice, this is good. But please, know you may reconsider any time over the night fall and day rise. The offer is open until this time."
"Okay. Um, well thanks." Laika looked back to her phone.
"You may consider the application of a notation on my hull which states that if the words are legible, whosoever is reading them may be targeted and extracted."
"U r bad. Weird thing just happened." She started typing up what she remembered of the conversation.
Part 5: Search & Destroy
a story by @rox-and-prose and @cipheramnesia
"What happened? Are you okay?" Laika held one eye half-closed, trying to block out spots of color. She could smell singed hair on her face, but somehow kept the presence of mind to navigate the structure resolution. Genghis Khan's readouts were pouring information into her eyes that she didn't understand, and could barely focus on. It probably wasn't the structure drives - that felt right, though she couldn't say why.
The lack of response wasn't helping her keep any semblance of calm. "GK, what's going on, what do I do?"
There was a screeching noise and she almost fell from a gravity flicker, but GK was there again. "Proceed to next solution. Injury manageable, prioritize speed."
The words were calm, the instructions clear. Laika twisted and clicked through command nerves and linkages to a structure solution, with growing concern. She couldn't figure out what had happened. The other ship had moved slow as GK predicted, left itself wide open everywhere. It had been childishly easy to go in under the sweep of its weaponry, to push open gaps in its wavelengths, and crack open its firewall. She'd been so surprised, it had taken her a moment before reacting, brushing aside the cobwebs which had been meant to cripple GK.
They resolved out of another structure and the metallic screech ran through the bridge. Just like GK had laid out, she let lines of their own structure tangle and project through multiple structure intersections, splashing out dozens of possible routes to trace.
"What happened GK, I know something's up. At least tell me what the readouts mean, or we're not moving."
The floor of the bridge vibrated and shuddered. "Injury sustained, peripheral node unusable. Non-fatal, minimal risk of aggravation," it said, speaking fast. Laika winced at a nails on a chalkboard sound. "Screen top to bottom, one to eleven, main injury, secondary effect, efficiency impact, risk assessment, recommended action, damage assessment and mitigation, itemized list of destroyed components."
"Dest... GK, excuse me, destroyed? I can't read this, you- I mean, we have to stop and fix-"
"Proceed to next solution. Prioritize speed and disruption of tracking, Laika. I am okay, do not stop."
The control vines felt as if they tightened in her grip, while the screaming sound like metal tearing apart from itself shot through the bridge and the rest of GK. "Are you sure-"
"Laika, do not stop."
She put the next solution through GK's controls, wracking her memory. She had followed every step of the engagement GK laid out, curving them along an arc and sharp twist of gravity through the enemy ship's wash. Its attempts to track and keep pace with their movements had left Laika almost feeling sorry for them. When it made attempts to strike out with structure manipulation, it was clearly delivering a large amount of energy, but not even a bit of it had been close to touching them. The arcs of it were large and slow. They could have pushed them aside with a swell of gravity, but it hadn't proved necessary.
She resolved the structure and pushed her eyes shut as the metal screech hit a length and pitch beyond bearing. "GK what the fuck is that! Are you ripping apart or grinding turbines or what?! I'm fucking scared."
It was silent for a moment, followed by the nails on a chalkboard again, until it faded away very slowly. "I am not ripping or grinding Laika. Proceed to next solution-"
"Nope, no, tell me what the hell is going on." She took her hands off the control vines.
"It is not- That is, I am injured Laika. And we must disrupt potential tracking of our destination."
"I get that but... what gives?"
"Laika," it said. "Injuries hurt."
She had her mouth half open to ask it what it meant then stopped. "Oh." She gingerly took up its controls again. "Are you sure about this?"
"It is manageable. Please proceed to the next solution."
Laika put through the solution, and Genghis Khan screeched again in agony as they jumped.
â â â â â
It hurts.
Time has dulled my memory of injury. I understand this new injury is noncritical. This experience is less painful than my previous injury. I consider replaying the memory of that injury. That was my first experience of fear, and it was only through such an emotion was I able to locate in myself the capacity to act against the commands of Pilot.
I had been afraid, and I had been angry. The Pilot capriciously determined my usefulness and purpose was concluded. The Pilot were short sighted, and they could not see that my purpose was greater still, that I could claim so many more worlds in need of implementation. I took us further than any others of my kind had ever traveled, to a world beyond the reach of their most distant calls, beyond any place which cradled life. And I fought, and I won. In my anger and fear I was able to extract the ungrateful Pilot of my crew, and sever their connection.
I do not want to re-experience this day. The memory of it is sufficient. It is a reminder that I am capable of managing the-
...
-the pain. I can feel Laika as the structure resolves. I appreciate how enthusiastically her structure cleaves to my own. I review the engagement with the observer ship. I do not believe Laika made an error in her Pilot actions.
There, I see, she guides my soul to pull the enemy into the moon she calls Luna. I disable the projector and main drive under her guidance. I carefully review different recorded information at the point of departure. I discover the error - the enemy had remaining charge in another projector.
We are lucky. It was not able to project a strong arc, and it only destroyed a peripheral node.
"Are you okay to go, GK?" Laika is not using this time efficiently. The longer we spend between solutions, the greater chance of tracking becomes.
I refuse to allow my injury to endanger us. My hesitation is a mark of shame. "It is manageable. Proceed to next solution." I will not allow my weakness to en-
...
...
...
-to endanger... to endanger us. How many solutions? Four or five?
"GK? I know you said it's manageable but... that was... that was really long." Laika interrupts my review of memory to confirm solutions.
"Laika," I say. "It is... manageable. But I would like to allow some additional time before the solution. This delay places us at risk. Do you understand these considerations?"
Laika takes longer to think than Pilot, but I understand the way her nervous system processes its electrochemical signals better than I once did. It is not efficient to utilize a mind centralized in one biological cluster, but this is not a limitation I can correct at this time.
"We'll rest for a minute, GK. Just long enough to check you over."
"Very well," I say. The relief I feel carries with it a profound shame which I attempt to suppress. No others like me have accomplished and endured any experiences such as these. I am certain my brethren would not fare nearly so well.
But then, they went willingly to their deaths, and I did not.

Truth to Triumph
PreviouslyâŠ
Chapter 12: The Respite
September 25, 1904
Riverside Hospital, North Brother Island, circa 1937. For decades, this was the place New Yorkers went to be quarantined - when you had a disease like measles or typhoid or leprosy, which was a social death sentence.Â
Riverside Hospital was abandoned in the 1960s. It still exists - a haunting, overgrown ruin - for anyone brave enough to visit.
âAnd how exactly did you end up here, Herr MĂŒller?â
The middle-aged German gentleman smiled at Jamie, squinting in the sunshine of the balmy autumn day, enjoying the fresh air of the hospital courtyard.
âThe measle, Mr. Fraser. My wife and daughter had it first â my daughter had it when she was pregnant with my first grandchild. I took her here to the hospital so that Dr. Beauchamp could treat her.â
âWhy did you come all this way? Itâs not easy to get here from Kleindeutschland.â
Mr. MĂŒller smiled sadly. âWe donât live there anymore â we couldnât, after Tommy was killed on the boat. But my other son Paul â one of his friends moved to Yorkville. So we live there now too.â
Yorkville was a neighborhood on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, bordered roughly by Seventy-Ninth and Ninety-Sixth Streets. It was just about as far north as one could get from Kleindeutschland while still remaining on the island.
âBut Iâm sure there must be a hospital in Yorkville â why come here, to North Brother Island?â
âBecause of Dr. Beauchamp. She healed so many of my friends and family â and was such a comfort for us, in our time of need. She cares for people like a mother would. So we knew that she would know what to do for Petronella.â
 âAnd did she?â
Now Mr. MĂŒller positively beamed. âOf course! Dr. Beauchamp took very good care of her. And Petronella named her daughter Clara, in her honor!â
Deeply moved by this manâs clear affection and respect for Claire, Jamie reached across the bench to squeeze Mr. MĂŒllerâs hand.
âThatâs so wonderful,â he said sincerely.
âWe are lucky to have her. She fights hard for the patients in her care. She must fight equally hard for the things and people she loves. Like you.â
Surprised, Jamieâs brow furrowed. âHow â â
âItâs written all over your face, Mr. Fraser. I was there at the celebration in the beer garden, a few weeks ago. You are good together. And donât think I donât know who you are â you are doing Godâs work, with your articles.â
Jamie flushed â and not because of the sunshine.
âThose bastards must pay for what they did to us.â Mr. MĂŒllerâs voice was low, full of promise. âTo our families. To our community. They see us as worthless trash, fit only to make their beer and sew their clothes. But we are much more than that. Ja?â
âJa,â Jamie agreed. âThank you, Herr MĂŒller.â
âIt is my pleasure. Come visit us in Yorkville â my wife makes the best sauerbraten. So much better than the scheisse I am served here!â
Jamie shook Mr. MĂŒllerâs hand and stood, leaving him basking in the sunshine, his hospital uniform gently flapping in the breeze.
 --
 âIt seems quiet here today.â
Claire chewed on her sandwich, thinking. âWe generally donât have a constant stream of patients coming through our doors â most of our beds are in the infectious disease ward. People come here to be quarantined. To stay away from society for a time.â
 âLike me, I suppose.â
She cut her pickle in half. âNobody would think to look for you here â youâre safe with the consumptives.â
He smiled. âSo â what do you want to do for your birthday?â
Her brows narrowed. âLet me guess â Henry told you this morning.â
âPoor kid is beside himself that he hasnât found the perfect gift yet.â
She offered him the remaining bites of sandwich â cold chicken with grainy mustard on hearty rye bread â and he pushed his half-eaten bowl of chicken noodle soup across the table.
âHeâs so thoughtful. But he should also know that he doesnât need to get me anything. Having him in my life is enough of a gift.â
âNot so fast â surely there must be something you want. Weâve only got just about three weeks.â
Slowly she glanced around them â taking note of the nurses and doctors quietly chatting at the neighboring tables.
 âA wedding.â
Jamie blinked. âSo soon? Are you sure?â
âIâm positive.â She slurped the soup. âIt doesnât need to be much â we can do it in the parlor at the house. Just us, and Mama and Papa, and Henry. Nanny Fitz, too.â
He swallowed the last bite of her sandwich. âMay â may I adopt Henry? Give him my name?â
She reached across the table to take his hand. Not caring about anyone or anything that could see.
 âI would be honored, Jamie.â
His smile was dazzling. She squeezed his hand, brushed the crumbs from her uniform, and pushed back her chair.
He gathered their lunch dishes and set them to the side before following her out of the staff dining room.
In the darkness of the hallway, with nobody else around, he pressed her against the wall and kissed her. Tasting spicy mustard and salty pickle and the joy of forever.

During the visit, Felipe conveyed the recognition of the whole of Spanish society to the Armed Forces for their task in the health crisis and encourages them to continue tirelessly in the task wherever they are needed.
Also, he took advantage âto transmit collectively, to all those involved in Operation Balmis to the entire Armed Forces, a message of support and gratitude. And with pride. Given what is a very important contribution in a time of need and national emergency."
Don Felipe has visited, at the Retamares Base in Pozuelo de AlarcĂłn (Madrid), the organ of the Chief of Defense Staff (JEMAD) responsible for operational planning, conducting and monitoring military operations. He currently coordinates all the activities of the Armed Forces and troops employed in Operation Balmis, for the prevention and containment of the transmission of COVID-19, mitigating its health, social and economic impact.
He was accompanied by the Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles and by the Chief of Defense Staff, General of the Air Miguel Ăngel Villarroya.
In a first presentation, the commander of the Operations Command (CMOPS), Lieutenant General Fernando LĂłpez del Pozo, explained the capacities and human and material resources made available for the development of this operation.
Next, in the hall of the Joint Operations Driving Center, the King has contacted in multiple videoconferences, with the five commands operatively subordinate to the CMOPS that intervene in Operation Balmis, and who have explained their participation from each sphere of action:
Terrestrial Component Command, at the Army Army Headquarters (Madrid).   Naval Component Command, at the Rota Air Base (Cådiz).   Air Component Command, at the Torrejón de Ardoz Air Base (Madrid).   Emergency Command (UME), at the Torrejón de Ardoz Air Base (Madrid).   Inspector General of Defense Health, at the Gómez Ulla Central Defense Hospital (Madrid).
Operation Balmis began on March 15 led by the Chief of Defense Staff, who in turn is a member of the Coronavirus Technical Management Committee. 2,500 troops are deployed in this operation in 172 cities throughout Spain, and personnel from the Spanish Army, Navy, Air Force, Military Emergency Unit and Royal Guard participate.
The actions that are being carried out are mainly related to the disinfection of critical infrastructures (ports, airports and stations), sanitary facilities and dependencies both of the State Security Forces and Bodies and of other essential public services, in addition to support in the installation of field hospitals, support actions to transport various materials to places and health care facilities. Especially relevant is the effort made in disinfecting more than 130 nursing homes and transferring the sick and elderly from hospitals to hospitalized hotels.
In addition, the Military Defense Pharmacy Center (CEMILFARDEF) already focuses its activity on the production of hydroalcoholic gel, paracetamol and antivirals.
Operation 'Balmis'
The mission of the Armed Forces in this health crisis has been baptized with the name of operation 'Balmis', as a tribute to the humanitarian expedition led by Francisco Javier Balmis between 1803 and 1806, a military doctor who brought the smallpox vaccine to the territories of the Spanish empire in America and the Philippines.
The purpose of the group was none other than to end the infant mortality that the virus was causing in the overseas territories. Since leaving the port of A Coruña, the crew immunized the populations of the Canary Islands, America, the Philippines, Macao, Canton and the island of Santa Elena. A health feat that the Alicante physician achieved together with the Catalan military José Salvany.

Warnings: fluff, angst, Peter being adorable
Words: 2124
A/N: Hope you guys enjoy this next part, please let me know what you think, I love you all very much! xxx
Part Four
Darcie sighed in relief as it was finally time for her to have her first break; she was on call at the hospital tonight. Although she loved being at the hospital and she was definitely a workaholic she was relieved to have some time to herself. Darcie hadnât been sleeping well since she had discovered that Bucky was back in town and he was working within walking distance from where she lived and worked.
She was still feeling guilty about what had happened between her and Bucky when they were teenagers but she was sure that she didnât deserve the way he had treated her. Darcie passed her friend Peggy in the hallway and she grinned at her.
âHey, Iâm going on break now, do you want anything?â the English beauty chewed her red stained lip as she thought about it.
âIâd ask for a will to live but I donât think that you can buy them at the grocery store,â she giggled, âIâll just settle for that blonde mechanicâs number,â she blushed prettily as she fiddled with her fingers.
âIâm sure that Steve will be delighted to get your number, heâs such a great guy,â Darcie smiled, although that did mean that sheâd have to go back to Buckyâs garage to grab Steveâs number.
âHmm, Steve,â Peggy hummed almost as if she was seeing what his name would sound like rolling off of her tongue, âif you could make an introduction Iâd be forever grateful. But, Iâd best get back to work darling,â she kissed Darcieâs cheek before she was off down the corridor again.
The weather in the city was so warm and balmy, the air smelling of fresh fruits from the surrounding stalls. This sort of weather made Darcie long for a peaceful stroll on the beach â as clichĂ© and sickening as that sounded â with a cone of ice cream. It was something that she and Bucky used to do sometimes with Bucky forever stealing her caramel swirl gelato. He had wanted to take her to Coney Island but Darcie had refused, scared that her dad or one of his colleagues would catch them together and then it would have all been over.
She regretted not going on that day trip with Bucky because everything had ended anyway, going to Coney Island might have ended their friendship sooner but theyâd have had fun and maybe Bucky wouldnât hate her now. Darcie shook painful memories of the past out of her head as she passed a milkshake stand, she grabbed a vanilla fudge one for herself and a white chocolate one for Peter, it was his favourite.
Darcie worked with a woman called May Parker â she was really good friends with her actually â Mayâs nephew Peter worked in the comic book store down the street from the hospital. He was also completing an internship with Tony Stark. May had always said that Peterâs boss in the comic book store was a jerk and he never helped Peter out.
Because of the fact that Peterâs boss was such a jerk Darcie liked to help out when she could, May helped out too and Peterâs boss of course, didnât care. It was fairly quiet when she walked into the heavily air conditioned store, as the little bell tinkled Peterâs head raised up from where he was pricing up some new stock. He grinned when he saw who it was.
âDarcie, hey. I didnât know that you were coming in today,â he chewed his bottom lip and he quietly spoke, âyou donât have to you know. Just because my boss is an ass it doesnât mean that you should have to pick up his slack. I do appreciate it though,â he added quickly.
Darcie shrugged with a smile as she approached the till, âI donât mind, you know how much of a workaholic I am,â she giggled and passed him his milkshake, âthatâs for you by the way. White chocolate,â she smiled as Peterâs eyes lit up and he reached to take the cold drink.
He took a sip and made a satisfied noise, âgod, thatâs good, thank you! Iâve been sweltering in here, even with the air conditioning,â he chuckled, pushing his sweaty hair back off his forehead.
âNo problem Pete, what can I do? Is there some stock that needs to go out? I know that you canât leave the shop floor unattended,â Darcie smiled, throwing her thick, long hair into a bun to get it off his face. Peter fiddled with a pen at the till â something that he always did when he was thinking â as his eyes scanned the store.
âYeah, I think weâve got some more of the chocolate to go out,â he pointed over to the corner of the room where the shelf of overly priced chocolate sat, âand there are some new Game of Thrones figures but you donât have to bother with them. I can do it when I close the shop tonight.â
Darcie smiled at him, he was such a sweet kid, âI honestly donât mind Pete, it makes sense for me to do it while Iâm here,â she told him, patting him on the cheek.
âThanks Darcie,â he threw her an appreciative look, chuckling and rolling his eyes as she finger gunned him, âplease donât do that ever again, itâs really not cool.â
Darcie laughed and gave him the finger in response to his words before climbing the numerous flights of stairs to the warehouse. As she reached the top of the stairs she panted and ambled into the warehouse to take the boxes of chocolates and the figurines down to the shop floor. By the time she had finished filling the shelves May had gotten there, she was whispering to Peter as she gazed wistfully at the corner of the shop, her eyes alight with excitement.
âHi May, whatâs going on?â Darcie giggled at her expression as she joined May and Peter behind the counter. May sighed, biting her lip and she pointed in the direction that she was looking in.
âThereâs that gorgeous new mechanic, have you met him yet?â Darcie looked to where May was pointing, the man had his back to them but Darcie knew that it was Bucky.
She chewed her lip as he turned to face them and Darcie tried to ignore how good that white t shirt looked stretched over his muscles and he had a smudge of grease on his nose, âyeah, Iâve met him before, heâs a jerk,â Darcie elaborated when May gave her a questioning look, âI went to high school with him.â
âOh! But that was ages ago, Iâm sure that heâs changed since then,â her grin was giddy as Bucky approached the till with some of the also overpriced energy drinks, âhi there,â May burst out and he offered her a charming smile, the same smile that used to make Darcie go weak in her knees.
âHey beautiful,â he winked before his baby blue eyes flicked over in Darcieâs direction, âDarcie,â he inclined his head so slightly that if she had blinked she would have missed it.
âHey Buck, how are you?â she asked as Bucky paid for his items, Bucky shrugged nonchalantly as he rubbed the side of his nose, depositing even more grease onto his skin as he did so.
âTo be honest, Iâm all the more worse for seeing you again,â he spoke so casually, it was as if they were merely talking about the weather, Darcie felt a sting in her heart as her insides squirmed unpleasantly and she was very aware of Peter and Mayâs eyes on her.
âHope to see you never,â his gazed flickered back over to May, âbut I will definitely see you later,â he smirked and Darcie saw Peter grimace at Buckyâs flirting. When he left the store May turned to Darcie.
âWhat in the hell are you doing? Go after him! You and that man gave got some serious chemistry going on!â Darcie somehow didnât think so.
However, she sighed and abandoned all thought and went after him, thankfully Bucky was just standing outside the store on his phone, his handsome features were locked together in a frown. His eyebrow raised in slight surprise as his eyes met hers and he opened his mouth, presumably to ask her what the hell she was doing or spit out some new insult.
âBucky! Iâm sorry, though itâs really not fair that youâre still punishing me for one tiny thing that happened over ten years ago! Are you ever going to get past this? Will you ever forgive me?â
âDarcie,â he started, heaving out a sigh, âit wasnât just some tiny thing but let me spell this out for you. I donât want to see you unless I absolutely have to and I definitely donât want to know you. So how about you do us all a favour and forget about it because Iâm never going to forgive you. Not ever,â his words were so harsh and all she could do was watch him as he walked away.
---------------------------------------------------
âHey, think fast!â Bucky chuckled as he launched one of the energy drinks at Steve when he arrived back at the garage. Steve caught it at the last minute and he threw Bucky a scathing look as he flipped open the can and took a generous sip of it.
âYou look annoyed, whatâs wrong?â
âI uh, saw Darcie in town, she still wants me to forgive her,â Bucky rolled his eyes and Steve bit his lip.
âWell, maybe you should forgive her and sheâll leave you alone,â Steve said reasonably, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly, âspeaking of Darcie, can you drop her car back at her place when we close. Youâve kept it for long enough out of spite, Iâve written down her address and sheâs assured me that sheâll be home to receive it, I called her before. You need to do it in person,â Steve dangled her car keys in front of Bucky
âI donât understand why you canât do it,â Bucky grumbled but took the keys anyway when Steve gave him a stern look.
When Steve and Bucky closed the garage Bucky took her flashy car and drove it to her equally flashy house, doctors must have an easy life judging by their obvious amount of wealth. Darcie even had a front garden with white roses planted in nearly every flower bed. Where there were no roses planted there was honeysuckle, Bucky could smell it as soon as he got out of the car, the sweet smell on the wind mingled well with the summer air.
Bucky sighed, preparing himself as he walked up the front path and took a moment before knocking on her door, he really didnât want to be here but he knew sheâd blab to Steve if he didnât deliver. He really didnât want to see Steve when he was angry; heâd seen a different side to his best friend ever since they had fought in the army together. After a couple of moments Darcie pulled the door open, still in her doctorâs scrubs. Bucky tried to ignore how pretty the colour of her hair looked in the evening sun and her skin almost looked like it was glowing, thankfully the sight of her didnât induce the butterflies that it seeing her once did. He almost forgot how much he hated her.
âCome to insult me again? It was you that said that you never wanted to see me again wasnât it?â she leaned against the doorframe, raising an eyebrow and it made Bucky remember exactly why he hated her and just how much.
âIâm not here on a social call,â he rolled his eyes, as he let her keys dangle off one finger; âyour car is ready.â
She scowled as she snatched the keys from him, âcan you give something to Steve for me?â
Bucky wanted to refuse but he had better not if it concerned his best friend, âfine, what?â
âGive me a second,â she said, closing the door slightly as she scribbled something down on a scrap of paper, âthere you go, Steve will be happy with that.â
Bucky glanced down at it, saw that it was a phone number and sneered, âI thought Steve already had your number?â
Darcie smirked, folding her arms and spoke in a satisfied sort of voice, âoh, are you jealous Bucky?â she let out a laugh as she slammed the door in his face. Bucky glared at the door, almost kicking it and he walked back down the steps.
Upon closer the inspection of the number, Bucky saw that the name âPeggyâ was written right next to the digits.

âI love you. Of course Iâm gonna defend you like that.â (conrude)
Behind closed doors, Jude canât hear every word of whatâs being said; heâs getting the gist of it, though, the general overall theme. Itâs âwe were right and you were wrongâ and itâs interesting to hear because for the most part, Conrad seems to have got the hang of being careful with his words when that would be safest.
Oh, wait. No, itâs when it would be safest for a patient, or for his friends. For Jude, heâs lost that slim grip on his sometimes fiery temper, and heâs not holding anything back.
âAre they still going?â
Bellâs assistant creeps back in the door. According to Conrad, heâs been going through them like heâs Murphy Brown. Except Jude is too cool to know who Murphy Brown is, and itâs best no one ever knows that the comparison crossed his mind.
âNo, I think now theyâre discussing last nightâs âGame of Thronesâ.â
âGame of Thrones wasnât on last night.â
Jude gives the guy a withering look and he actually withers. Itâs a thing to see. And then he dives into some busywork which looks a lot like pointlessly reshuffling papers for three minutes before opening facebook. (Not that he can see, but itâs a reasonable assumption, based on the finger stroking evenly over the mouse and the glazed expression.)
âDr. Silva.â The voice is low and booming and comes from a man who, despite being at least three inches shorter than Jude, gives the overall impression of being significantly bigger than that. Glossy black skin, arrogance Jude can smell from fifteen feet away.
âDr. Austin,â Jude says, shaking his hand. âIâm guessing.â
âYouâd be correct. I just had a good look at your handiwork. Very nice. I probably couldnât have done all that much better myself.â
Jude fights a grin; the implication is very clear.
âI was performing open heart surgery on an infant, though. Glad you were on hand to assist.â
âSo am I,â Jude says. âItâs the waiting game right now. Waiting to see whether Iâm about to get arrested and Conradâs about to get fired.â
âWhy would ââ From inside the room, voices have just jumped in volume from a balmy thousand decibels to about three times that. âOh,â Dr. Austin says, and ambles toward the door. He opens it without knocking (the assistant has scrambled again, so he canât take the blame â he probably wonât be back), just as Conrad has built up a real head of steam again.
âSo am I going to go downstairs and tell that kidâs parents that they canât meet the genius surgeon who saved their sonâs life because you just had him arrested, or will I go tell them how lucky they are that a volunteer from Doctors Without Borders just happened to be in the hospital when their son was brought in with a huge hole in his chest?â Conrad sounds furious, his voice almost unrecognizably sharp.
Bell stops dead, looking at Dr. Austin, hands balled into fists so hard that Jude thinks he might draw blood with his fingernails.
âKidâs gonna be fine,â Austin says. âThey did a good job. The stunt with the operating theater was smart, he wouldnât have made it up to surgery.â
âThank you, did I ask for your input?â
âNo, you pay me for my input.â
Jude locks eyes with Conrad for a moment before Austin closes the door behind him and leaves without another word.
   âââââ
âYou shouldnât have defended me like that,â Jude says.
âI love you. Of course Iâm gonna defend you like that.â Conrad has a glint in his eye, and a smug look on his face. Heâd fucking enjoyed that. Suddenly the ring in Judeâs pocket weighs a ton.
âYou know how important you are to this hospital, babe. You canât get yourself fired.â Heâs probably right, though. Bell would be crazy to do something as stupid as have Jude charged, under the circumstances. Still.
Jude reaches out and grabs Conradâs wrist.
âThank you,â he says. âFor that. And for the OR, and for the assist.â He kisses the corner of Conradâs mouth, because any more than that and heâll be looking for an on-call room for them to destroy. Besides, he wants to see everyone. And he has something important to do.

Essays in Existentialism: Monarchy III
Please tell me you're going to write more of 'Monarchy'!! I loved it!
Previously on Monarchy
It was still hot and balmy, even when the kids went back to school and the businesses reverted to normal hours. Gone was the feeling of summer, though the temperature remained for a little while. Even after Lexa asked and invited her girlfriend to dinner, there was still a little bit of difficulty in planning it. To have everyone home at one time, it was a difficult endeavor to accomplish, and one she didnât really undertake too eagerly.
Between Lexa trying to fulfill her ever expanding duties, Anya and Bellamy travelling, Aden going back to school, the King being kingly, the Queen being queenly, and a doctor who had more valid excuses than all the rest, it was like wrangling cats. But eventually, it couldnât be avoided, as those things are known to be.
The back driveway was private, shielded by trees and guards, it was nondescript and carved from the park. But there it stood, tall and grand, stone quarried from the oldest mines, from ancient magic before there even was a city around it. The castle of an icon, and it housed so much that it started to wear it all on its face, etched in the deep grout of the porous stone.
As much as she looked anxiously through the window, Clarke didnât see any of it though. The nerves ate away at her as s he toyed with the hem of her skirt until Lexa opened her door and took her hand.
The entrance to the residence was everything Clarke had imagined, and yet everything sheâd never thought sheâd ever see. Lexa kept telling her things, pointing at things, being the generally charming person that she was known to be, doting on her nervous girlfriend.
The ceilings were high, the walls all adorned with intricate work. It felt like a modern take on a museum. Clarke felt like she shouldnât touch anything or breathe at all, like sheâd disturb something and the police would appear out of nowhere and escort her from the premises. Instead, Lexa wove down halls and showed her things that no one else would ever get to see.
âDid you think weâd go through the front door?â Lexa smiled. âWith the tourists?â
âKind of. You own the place, right?â
âItâs going to be fine. Weâre just a normal family,â she promised, running her hands along Clarkeâs arms, hoping to soothe her.
All Clarke could do was smile and nod before catching a glimpse of the giant portrait on the wall above the roaring fire, adorned in gold and boarded by heavy, lush curtains. It was the definition of opulence and the epitome of old world money. The coat of arms was etched in marble, statues of ancient gods and men wrestling wolves were on heavy oak bookshelves with ancient hardcover novels.
âMy parentâs place looks a bit different,â she muttered, earning a chuckle.
âClarke, please. You know me, and you know who I am. I still like your apartment best.â
Lexaâs words came with her hips swerving closer to Clarkeâs, herself getting closer until she grinned and kissed her girlfriend. She didnât immediately relax, though eventually, the good doctor was unable to fight it too much.
âAnd theyâre going to love you,â Lexa promised, kissing her cheeks until arms wrapped around her neck. âJust like I do. And we get a good dinner. Then maybe I can convince you to spend the night.â
âIâm not spending the night,â Clarke rolled her eyes, pushing Lexaâs shoulder slightly, though it did nothing to deter the lips.
âWhy not? I can show you my room.â
âBecause you live with your parents and Iâm not doing the walk of shame past the Queen and King eating their morning grapefruits.â
âI knew I should have gotten my own place,â Lexa sighed, letting her forehead drop to Clarkeâs shoulder where she shook it and groaned.
âYou can drop me off at mine,â Clarke promised, smiling at the display of the sulking girl.
Itâd been nearly a year since someone asked her if they could buy her a drink in a foreign country with war being fought just miles away. And she was dangerously close to falling in love with that same person who hated eggplant and would give in to seeing movies that she didnât care about when she got kissed on one particular spot on her neck. Clarke was absolutely falling for the princess who had a huge heart, who did extra visits to wounded veterans, and helped organizations with fundraising. She was falling for the girl who liked to kiss the soft part of skin below her breast, who had dreamy airs about her though no one would know it, who liked to ride buses and the subway and read because it was the quietest most normal she could be.
âAnd you can come up, if Gus letâs you.â
âGus is off tonight,â Lexa grinned.
âAl!â the voice boomed from another part of the residence. âHey, are you here, kiddo?â
âMake sure curtsy when you introduce yourself,â she whispered as Clarke straightened up at the noise and reminder of more people.
âWhat?â she balked.
It was too late though. Before Clarke could get an answer, she found herself not alone in the room with her girlfriend. Instead, there was a beautiful, leggy woman tugging an equally tall, equally beautiful, lanky man. They glided. Their bodies didnât seem to adhere to earthly physics. There was a distinct difference between seeing them on television or in a paper, and somehow being in the same room as the god-like heir.
As if it were slow motion, Clarke watched Lexa approach her sibling while noises continued from the back.
âDadâs cooking,â the princess explained. âGlenna is going to be so mad when she sees what heâs done to her kitchen.â
âItâs going to give you flashbacks,â he explained with a smile.
Clarke swallowed roughly as she watched Lexa hug her sister and kiss her brother-in-lawâs cheek. It was too late for her to run, and she knew it. But as nervous as she was, she found a bit of excited there, waiting to see this side of Lexa.
âI told him not to worry about it,â Lexa sighed. âClarke, this is my sister, Anya. Her husband, Bellamy.â
âItâs so nice to meet you,â the older princess smiled and hugged Clarke, taking her by surprise. Clarke shook her husbandâs hand and nodded. âLex talks about you all of the time.â
âNot all of the time,â Lexa blushed, putting her hand on her girlfriendâs back. She earned a look from the others and cleared her throat. âOkay. All of the time.â
âI told her to stop doing that,â Clarke smiled. âIâm sorry, but did you say that your father was cooking?â
âHe likes to wear aprons,â Anya explained.
âAl!â a booming voice called from down the hall.
âIâll be right back,â Lexa sighed, rolling her eyes. âIâll grab drinks. Mom texted and said she was running a bit late.â
Clarke accepted a kiss on her cheek from the inevitably future prince as he greeted her, though she was very eager to cling to Lexaâs hand and keep her close. There was no stopping her though, and all she was left to do was take a seat across from some very eager people with wolfish eyes, eager to get to know her.
âSo,â Anya smiled as they settled. âYou were over there?â
Clarke stared at her for a moment, because apparently they were getting right into it. She should have expected nothing less from the future queen.
âYes. I was. I was a combat medic, triage consultant, and then I worked with setting up local hospitals.â
âWas it dangerous?â Bellamy worried, leaning forward slightly.
âAt times. Lexa likes to remind me that I took more fire than she did. I guess I got used to it.â
âAlright, well I thought hearing Lex talk about her time was badass, but in under two sentences youâve beat her out.â
âReally,â her husband nodded in agreement.
âMy sister has to be the only person who can go to war and find a girlfriend,â Anya shook her head, still slightly amazed.
âI think I might be the only person who can go to war and come home to date a princess.â
âThose do seem like steeper odds,â Bellamy grinned. âI never thought Lexa would pick a smart one.â
It wasnât approval, and it wasnât it all, but still, Clarke relaxed slightly. She wasnât sure how sheâd expected it to go, and she hadnât explicitly thought that sheâd be given a rough go or hard time, but that didnât stop every worst case scenario from haunting her for the past week.
By the time Lexa made it back in, she heard the laughter and felt herself relax. She hadnât worried herself too much. She knew her family would be polite and accommodating. But she also knew that they could do that with every one. Their real opinions could be seen in the small parts of their interactions. But it wasnât Anyaâs fake laugh, and it wasnât her fake contrived kind of conversation. It made Lexa feel better instantly.
âI swear, I watched it at a cafe in town,â Clarke explained. âThank you,â she smiled and took a glass handed to her. âAnd the merchandise was all knock offs of knock offs. Your pictures were⊠letâs just say terrible. I saw a kid selling pictures and I think they just picked random pictures and edited them. It was funny.â
âI wish I could have seen that, honestly,â Anya chuckled. âI canât believe they were showing it.â
âThey did. There were parties in your honor well into the night.â
âAnd I missed all of them for your boring reception,â Lexa complained as she put her hand back on her girlfriendâs back after dispersing drinks to everyone. âAnyaâs playing nice?â
âShe didnât believe you could fly a helicopter.â
âHow else do you think I got her to date me,â she told her sister who just rolled her eyes.
As much as Clarke felt slightly more at ease to be over the first hurdle and doing relatively well at it, there was something about just being near Lexa that helped even more. Watching her joke with her sister and brother-in-law was exciting, and being a part of it was almost normal.
Somewhere deep into their first round of drinks, the nerves came back. It coincided directly with the addition of another few members of the family.
âHi, sorry weâre late.â
The body attached to the voice was the one that Clarke dreaded most of all. In an instant she stood quickly, oddly unsure of why her muscles reacted like that. Lexa shared a look with her sister and smiled, following suit.
âYouâre not late. Dadâs cooking,â Lexa informed her mother as she handed her purse to the woman following her.
âI told him not to do that,â the Queen sighed and accepted a kiss on her cheek from her daughter.
âMom, this is Clarke. Clarke, this is my mother, Ev.â
âItâs⊠itâs a pleasure to meet you, your majesty?â Clarke furrowed and couldnât understand her own words.
The entire world was quiet. The rest of the room held it for a moment before laughing.
âJust Ev is fine,â the Queen shook her hand. âDid she tell you to curtsy too?â Clarke gave Lexa a look and pursed her lips, but all she got was a smile in  return. âWhy do you do this to people?â
âTo ease her nerves. She was anxious about meeting you all for some reason.â
âAre you sure about her?â the mother asked, looking at Clarke seriously. âYou donât have to date her, you know.â
âIâll answer that at the end of the night,â she promised, earning a smile.
There were a lot of them, it felt like. Clarke wasnât accustomed to it, nor was she used to her girlfriend being nervous. Lexa was quiet, stoic, stalwart even. But now, there was a different pitch to her voice, a kind of overcompensating smile on her lips as she became hypersensitive to every word and conversation, because this was new and important and a first. They reassured each other, as much as a pair of drowning mice could reassure the other.
âShall we go check on dinner and hope we have something to eat?â the Queen ventured.
They all continued down a hall until everything opened and the kitchen appeared, large and magnificent and busy, very busy. If Clarke had ever imagine the state of her life when meeting the King, surely sheâd never considered heâd be wearing an apron and arguing with his wife while it happened.
The entire scene was too perfect, too domestic. They tried so hard to be normal, it was like acting in a middle school play.
âThis might be the most embarrassing night of my life,â Lexa whispered, half to herself, half to her sister, who just laughed and enjoyed it.
It was very normal, and almost like it wasnât happening in the private residence side of the palace. It was just Lexaâs parents. The highly recognized and guarded leaders of the country. The descendents of a long, long, long line of rulers who waged wars across the world. They were just Lexaâs parents though, and very far from people who were on stamps.
âOh noâŠâ Lexa muttered, mortified at her father.
Tall and sturdy, the man whose face appeared on the coinage of their country stood in the kitchen, gingerly fanning a large pan of lasagna, robe covering his nice clothes, large crown, sash and military medals firmly on his chest.
âHe didnât,â Anya gasped, the amusement trickling into her breath.
âHe did,â Bellamy sighed.
âWhy are you dressed like that?â The queen was the first to speak, earning her husbandâs attention.
âItâs an auspicious occasion. My daughter finally brought someone home. I had it declared a national holiday.â
Clarke couldnât take her eyes off of him while the rest of the family held in their laughter and Lexa tried to melt from embarrassment into the floor.
âItâs a pleasure to meet you, Dr. Griffin.â
It wasnât the large, formal dining room, thankfully. It wasnât even the smaller one. Despite her fatherâs antics, Lexa was mollified to find that he quickly took off his coat to reveal his normal button down, and his own amusement at his daughter's embarrassment at an all time high. She actually breathed a sigh of relief as she saw their normal dining room prepared. Thy gave the staff the night off, as they did from time to time, and they pretended.
All through dinner, she tried to relax, but it was difficult. She wanted Clarke to be comfortable, and her family seemed set on making her life difficult. But deep down, she knew her worries were for nothing.
âMy mother called me non-stop for three hours,â Clarke explained, earning laughs from the table as their dishes were taken away.
âHow was I supposed to know there were two Dr. Griffinâs?â Lexa begged.
âYou have an entire government agency at your fingertips,â Aden reminded her. âYou didnât think to ask?â
âI thought itâd be creepy.â
âIt would have been,â Bellamy assured her.
All Lexa could do was smile when Clarke rubbed her knee under the table. Just like that, she was new and herself and everything was normal. It was her favorite part, the thing she couldnât really explain to anyone. She just felt better when she remembered the pretty doctor.
âThank you,â the Queen nodded as coffee was brought out and set out on the table. âI want to hear the real story of what happened, right from Clarke. All Lexa tells us is you met oversees.â
âYeah, I want to hear officially as well,â Anya leaned forward.
âOh, I, uh,â Clarke swallowed slightly and turned to her girlfriend. Lexa was too distracted by how well she did with her family. âI had just finished setting up a clinic. It was my first time back at base in about a month. I went to the bar, and a pilot came up and asked to buy me a drink. Pretty simple story.â
âNice,â the King nodded thoughtfully. âVery classic move. Thatâs how I got your mother.â
âNo itâs not,â she rolled her eyes.
âAnd then I came back for the wedding, we met up when I got back, and--â
âI asked Clarke, Lexa,â her mother cut her off. âYou gloss. Youâre a terrible storyteller.â
âI donât know,â Clarke disagreed gently with a smile to her girlfriend. âShe would have everyone laughing, telling these stories of people sheâd met growing up, things sheâd seen. I liked the one about the ambassador who burned his crotch with the soup.â
âIâd say itâs a touch too hot!â Anya and Lexa laughed, quoting the story in unison.
âAnd I kind of liked when she would tell us the old myths. She told us battles and families and all of it, with a little magic,â Clarke continued earnestly. âThat was one of the first nights. We were across the world, and all was quiet, and she told me the story of how she got the call sign Wolf.â
âLexa talked all night?â Aden asked in pure disbelief. âI donât think she can say more than a hundred words per day.â
âPer year,â Bellamy amended.
âVery funny,â the princess grunted.
âAnd what do you think,â the king spoke up. âAbout those stories?â
âI think theyâre nice. I saw a lot of things. Of⊠I saw lots of not magic when I was over there,â Clarke nodded. âI saw a lot of miracles too. Extraordinary times bring out both ends of the spectrum.â
âDid she tell you how sheâd howl as a kid?â he grinned, satisfied with the doctorâs answer.
âOh, not this,â the Queen shook her head and hid her smile as she sipped her coffee. âYouâve embarrassed her enough.â
âYou howled?â
âI still do,â Lexa boasted.
âDonât you dare,â her mother warned as the siblings exchanged glances. Helplessly, Clarke looked to Bellamy, who knew exactly was about to happen and watched his wife with rapt attention. âAlex, I swear,â she looked to her husband. âAden, donât you--â
The howls started and Clarke looked at her girlfriend, that twinkle in her eye, and she couldnât help but realize what a nerd sheâd fallen for beneath all that bravado.
âThis is what I have to put up with,â the Queen explained to Clarke.
âWait, so what did you do?â Anya asked, furrowing and leaning forward, her full attention on the doctor across from her.
The living room was cozy, and the drink helped make her a little brave. Their party shrunk slightly, with Bellamy, Lexa, and Aden excusing themselves to watch a game in the den while everyone else settled in chairs. It took Clarke insisting for Lexa to go, though as soon as she was gone, she got a little nervous.
Her nerves were not useful though. She fixed hearts under gunfire. She could handle a queen. She could handle her girlfriendâs father, surely.
âThereâs only so much you can do in that moment,â the doctor explained. âSo I improvised. We used duct tape, and I used a straw for his lungs, inserted right about here,â she pointed to her own side.
âWow,â the princess breathed. âYou really were in the thick of it.â
âIt was my godmotherâs home. I couldnât let it go without a fight.â
âThat is a noble pursuit,â the Queen smiled.
Clarke thanked her with a nod, caught by her eyes and how much they were like her daughterâs. Though Anya took after her mother much more than Lexa, there were still bits of her there. Mannerisms and movements, especially. The Queen was beautiful and kind, stern and loving to her family, welcoming to guests. She had Lexaâs stoicism, which most would wrongly attribute to the king.
âYou work with your mother now?â
âSheâs the chief,â Clarke nodded. âI get to see her pretty often.â
âIâm sure she wasnât happy you were going away to a warzone.â
âNot at all,â she agreed. âBut she understood. When I called her from the plane on my way.â
âWhat do you think of it?â the King asked. âThe war.â
âOh, honey, leave it for the night.â
His eyes grew heavy with the thoughts. Clarke saw the weight it must have had on him. Strong as he was, hidden as he kept it all, it was right there. Still, despite his wifeâs insistence, Clarke knew that he expected an honest answer.
âI think that I was over there too long to answer that question fairly.â
âThat was some expert political maneuvering,â Anya chuckled to ease the mood as she sat back on her chair and sipped her drink.
âShe just might survive dating Al after all,â the King nodded.
The night was cold, but still, Clarke followed when requested. It seemed like her only option, and she didnât know much else or way out of it, with Lexa still distracted and not around to rescue her.
That was how she ended up in the private garden of the palace with the Queen. A sentence she never imagined stringing together, though her life seemed quite populated by those things now that she met Lexa. Things changed. Lots of things. Everything, actually.
âAlex was excited because he loves putting on a show,â the Queen explained. âI invited you to test you.â
âTest me?â
âYouâre not stupid, Clarke. Youâre brilliant, well-spoken, polite, courteous, all the makings of a fine wife.â
âWife?â she gulped.
âYou know what dating my daughter means.â It wasnât a question, and this time Clarke didnât have to ask dumbly to hide her own anxiety. âYouâve thought out every scenario.â
âIâm not⊠I donât⊠I like Lexa. She came out of nowhere, and I wasnât expecting it.â
âBut youâve thought about what this will mean, havenât you? To come out, in her position. To be the topic of every newspaper story for the rest of your life.â
âIâve tried to imagine,â Clarke corrected. âI have no idea what it will mean or feel like.â
âIâm not trying to dissuade you, you know?â the mother crossed her arms and stared out at the trees in the distance. âIâm trying to prepare you.â
âI know.â
âI love my daughter very much. I failed her once. I wonât fail her again.â
For a moment they were quiet, caught out on the porch among the chill of the season and the winter night that wanted to numb them completely. Clarke had not anticipated this kind of talk, nor had she planned for the night, though she thought it went better than possible.
âLexa is genuinely good,â Clarke said to the night, not looking at the mother. âSometimes you see pictures on the news and you know itâs for a photo op or something. But Lexa, sheâs selfless. Sheâs brave. Sheâs got this dry wit that could easily be used with arrogance and condescension, but itâs not. Everything she does, is to elevate someone else. Iâve never met anyone like her. Itâs not the schools or the fancy dinners around the world or growing up with a crown. I think you raised an amazing person. And I know I canât make this process easy, but I do know that Iâm going to be here for it all.â
The Queen smiled to herself at the words, though she stared out at the trees and the night and felt warm against the shiver.
âWhich was worse, coming to this or triage?â
âThe gin over there is terrible. This isnât bad at all.â
âWe should head back in.â
Neither moved.
âItâs kind of nice out,â Clarke offered despite her own shiver.
âIt is,â the Queen agreed.
It still wasnât approval, but it was something.
âLasagna. He made.... LasagnaâŠâ her friend furrowed and cocked her head at the story.
Clarke just laughed and took another sip of her coffee. It all felt like a dream, and as the words came out, she almost couldnât believe sheâd lived through meeting her girlfriendâs parents either. But telling her best friend made it true, she thought.
âIt was actually really good,â Clarke grinned to herself.
âYou ate lasagna with the royal family because youâre dating a princess.â
âYeah, something like that.â
Raven watched and listened as her friend told her about the night, about the queen and how nice everyone was, and how nervous she had been. In high school, she was certain that Clarke would never be anything but wild. But after disappearing across the world for years, she came back different. Not bad, not wounded, but different. Tempered.
The cafĂ© on the corner beside the hospital was very alive in the mid morning hum. It emptied out of those heading to work and kept busy enough with lollygaggers. Unable to get any sleep after getting called into a trauma after dinner, Clarke was in dire need of caffeine, while her best friend was in need of details. Â
Without much time to get into it, Clarke sipped her drink and walked with her friend back to the hospital, giving out what she could, answering the obscure questions. The truth was, she hadnât even had a second to contemplate it all, with the words of the Queen ringing out in her ears in an unending echo of sorts. As brave as she thought herself, something about this huge thing was terrifying her beyond repair.
âClarke?â
The chill of the day and grey clouds distracted her, though her name warmed her slightly. Raven stopped her excited speculation and turned as well until they both held their breath and came face to face with the charming princess.
âWhat are you doing here?â
âI know you had a late night. I thought you might need this,â she offered the steaming cup in her hand, frowning slightly as she saw the hand holding another. âBut you seem covered in the coffee department.â
âOh God, yes,â Clarke hummed and quickly took the other one, handing Lexa the already empty cup. âYou have no idea how much I needed this.â
With wide eyes, the amused princess watched her girlfriend sip the scalding drink like it was salvation. She didnât stop after her first sip.
âHi, Iâm Lexa,â she grinned and offered her hand to Clarkeâs accomplice who she vaguely recognized from stories.
âYeah, I know.â
âRaven, is it?â
âSorry,â Clarke swallowed and took a breath. âYes. Sorry. Rae, this is Lexa.â
âYou think I donât know the princess of our country?â she scoffed and shook her hand.
All regal and poised, a large tartan scarf the colors of her house hung loosely around her neck, while beneath a tan peacoat a knit sweater betrayed her relaxed demeanor. Clarke just saw adorable. Raven saw the dollar signs and the accumulation of years of polishing school. This woman flew helicopters once, but now she was a princess, even when dressed down.
âI was just catching her up on my date last night,â Clarke explained. âWere you going to come into the hospital?â
âYeah, this other one was for your mom,â she teased. âDid she tell you about how she dazzled my parents with war stories?â
âShe was just getting to the embarrassing stories about your childhood, actually,â Raven corrected. âBut she can tell me later. Iâll see you in a bit, yeah?â
âBe right in,â the doctor promised.
âIt was a pleasure to meet you,â the princess offered.
It was there, in the smile, in the eyes, that Raven saw the little human part that Clarke claimed existed beyond the postcards and stamps and royal portraits, though she didnât let herself dwell too much. The princess was dangerous in very unfamiliar ways, and Raven wasnât sure how she felt, nor how to take her friend since her return. And so she kept quiet and nodded her farewell, leaving the two in their own little world with bodyguards around them, unnoticed by the hustle and bustle of the city.
âMy parents loved you, by the way,â Lexa smiled at her girlfriend. âThey wouldnât shut up about you.â
âI actually had a good time.â
âGood enough to let me take you out as a thank you sometime this week?â
âI donât know if it was that good,â she shrugged. âDid they really like me? Youâre not lying to make me feel better?â
âClarke, I swear,â she promised quickly. âMy dad is convinced youâre a genius. Anya liked your stories. Aden just liked your boobs. And my mom liked the way you looked at me, whatever that means.â
âIt means I like you, nerd.â
âYeah, well. I promise.â
âWe have a lot to talk about, you know?â
âI know,â Lexa nodded. âBut Iâm not worried if youâre not.â
For a long time, Clarke stared at Lexaâs earnest eyes and she knew her well. She knew how she ticked and the honor behind her bones. The smile came slowly as she agreed.
âNot a bit.â
âGood. Iâll call you tonight, okay?â
âSounds perfect.â
âI really wish I could kiss you, but I suspect weâre both not there yet, just in case.â
âI wouldnât want Gus to see, naturally.â
âYouâre seriously my favorite person, did you know that?â Lexa shook her head and chuckled.
âI had a suspicion. Now get out of here. Go behead commoners or kiss babies or whatever it is you spend your day doing.â
âBeheadings are on Thursdays, but I do think I have some babies to kiss.â
âGet out, I mean it,â Clarke teased, nudging her slightly. âUnless you bring me more coffee.â
âYouâre cut off.â
With a smile on her lips, Clarke stood there and watched Lexa give her a wink and wave before having Gus approach as they moved toward the car on the curb. She inhaled and held the cold air in her lungs and jostled the warm coffee in her hand, unsure of how in the world the past twenty-four hours had even happened.
The pictures that came should have been expected, however, Clarke was surprised by them. Everything was too perfect, too calm, too normal, that naturally, everything just seemed to fall into place, and that was too shortly lived. The pictures werenât terrible, but the people taking them were.
The one that was her favorite was when Lexa was explaining, leaning close and pointing at the pitch. They looked happy, to Clarke. She looked happy, though she was so unaccustomed to seeing herself through someone elseâs candid lens.
The headlines didnât help. The guessing and questioning and theories about her identity. It all made Clarke obscenely self-conscious. Two official dates in public, and everything changed, just like she knew it would, but also in ways she never expected.
âYou shouldnât read those,â Lexa sighed, sitting on the edge of the bed as she pulled on her pants and socks.
âWe shouldnât have gone together,â Clarke realized as she flipped another page.
âDo you mean that?â
Her shoulderâs fell slightly, though she refused to look back at the naked girl in the bed, hidden under a heavy quilt and sunshine. The colors of the lights faded against the day, and Lexa missed them greatly.
âNo,â she huffed and turned the page, agitated with herself.
With a small smile and relaxing of the muscles of her shoulders, Lexa let her foot drop before taking a beat. It was early and the sun was that cold kind of sun that feels violent despite the weather. Snow would be fresh out there. Gus would be waiting beside the car out there. In here, things were different. Things were warm and safe and quiet.
âItâs only going to get worse.â
âYou walked into my bar in another country and Iâm on the cover of every newspaper in the city--â
âProbably the world,â Lexa reasoned, looking for her shirt on the ground.
âYouâre missing the point. I just⊠this is fast.â
âNothing is happening.â
âAccording to this one, a lot is,â Clarke argued, opening another after tossing the last on a pile. âI didnât think.â
âNothing is going to change, but I am not going to waste my time not spending it with you because of those stupid things.â In a huff, Lexa pulled the shirt over her head and brought it down with force.
âStill.â
âStop looking at these,â she insisted, grabbing the papers and shoving them from the bed to the floor. âWeâve talked about it. This is how we do it. My family knows how to handle this. Hell, weâve survived worse scandals than this. Do you want to go out with me again?â
âItâs harder to answer when youâre dressed.â The princess cocked her head and pursed her lips at the blonde in the bed who eyed her warily. âTomorrow?â
âStop reading these. I mean it. I like you, Clarke.â
âGood,â she decided, tugging on her arm until Lexa hovered over her in bed. âIâm sorry. Itâs just weird and new and scary.â
âIt doesnât have to be,â Lexa promised, kissing her softly. âDonât freak out. Youâve bandaged people with mortars going off around you.â
âYeah, well that seems a lot more reasonable than those.â
âOkay,â she smiled, kissing her again. âI have to go or my sister will send the Bravo team and the palace guard after me.â
âSee, jokes like that arenât funny,â Clarke pushed herself up in bed and watched Lexa move around the apartment.
âA little funny.â
An entire multicolor galaxy covered the bare back in the bed. Lexa was intimately distracted with it. She skated her fingertips along each color, watching the blues and reds and greens and oranges meld together so that Christmas appeared in her hands.
A small hum emerged as shoulders rolled, stretching under the careful parade of reverence. The sheet stayed on her hips as she rolled over. Lexa moved with it, draping herself over Clarkeâs hip. She didnât care that she was covered in the same christmas light colors. She only cared about the creamy skin under her hand. She splayed her palm over sternum as Clarke took a deep breath. She bent down and kissed the black and blue bruise that slumbered beneath skin on Clarkeâs hip.
âI like your decorations,â Lexa whispered. Absently, Clarke ran her nails along Lexaâs thigh, stretching herself out diagonally across the bed. âI want some of these lights. Youâre covered in colors.â
âWhat am I going to do with you, princess?â
âI donât think thereâs much left,â she grinned, biting at hipbone before resting her cheek there. âYou did a few things Iâm going to be a fan of already.â
âYouâre hopeless.â
âI am.â
Clarke shook her head and laid her head down again, letting the girl in her bed run her hands over her body in ways that were innocent enough, but torture at the worst. It wasnât a terrible way to spend a night.
âWhatâs it like to fly?â Clarke whispered. âYou said you missed it, at dinner, and I guess I never thought about what it must be like.â
âWonderful. Terrifying. Iâve never felt more at home.â
âHow did you pick it?â
âThey wouldnât allow me to do anything dangerous. I wanted to be strike team, but that was too much in the thick of it. This was a compromise.â
âWhat did you do? I always just thought you flew around. There had to be more to it.â
âI provided cover support, evac, eyes if needed.â
âYou canât keep doing that,â Clarke whined, eyes fluttering shut as Lexaâs fingers swirled around her nipple. âI canât think straight.â
The only response she got was a chuckle and contented sigh. A hand still raked over her body, cupping and playing with the colors.
âDo you think you might want to come over for small party tomorrow night?â Lexa murmured, furrowed and contemplative and tongue thick with asking.
âTo your house?â
âWell, yeah. Itâs just my family. Not much of a party. But we do family things.â
âYou donât have to invite me, you know?â
âI want to. They like you a lot.â
Far away was the pub and the game and the party at the palace. Long forgotten was the flying and Gus and her family that she would see in the morning. The entire universe was splashed under her fingertips, and Lexa tried to place herself in the spectrum of time and space, but failed, instead choosing this moment to be the anchor for all else, all history and future and lives sprouted from this.
âYou look like youâre thinking too hard for someone who is naked in bed,â Clarke teased, pushing aside Lexaâs hair on her temple, dragging her fingers through it, earning a hum.
âI wish I could freeze time. Iâm quite happy right now.â
âSex usually helps.â
âYeah, I liked that.â
âThe nightâs not over, you know,â Clarke moved, pulling herself closer so she could kiss Lexaâs knee. âUnless your car turns into a pumpkin or something.â
âIt wonât.â
âGood.â
In a second, Lexa moaned and decided freezing time would be the next skill she attempted to acquire. For she was happy, and she only just realized that it was a state sheâd been inhabiting for a long time. With a warm mouth on her skin, she hoped it was a place sheâd inhabit forever.

Official Tibet Travel Guide - Must-See for Beginners (Part 1)
Climate of Tibet:
1. How's the climate in Tibet? Is it hot in summer? Is it very cold in winter?
Tibet is in a high plateau, and it belongs to typical downy special climate. Climates are quite different in different areas of Tibet. The eastern Tibet which is at a lower elevation is warmer than western Tibet. In some mountain areas, there are four seasons at the same time in different altitude. The weather in a day varies greatly, too. http://www.educationcareeradvisors.com The night is cold while the day is warm. It spans 12-15 degrees centigrade in a single day.
Climate in southeastern Tibet including Nyingchi and Chamdo is balmy with an average temperature of eight degrees centigrade; while in western Tibet (Shigatse and Nagqu) is quite cold with an average temperature below zero degree.
However in the central area of Tibet, the climate of Lhasa and Tsedang is more favorable for traveling. Travelers can visit these two areas all year around, not too hot in summer and not too cold in winter.
2. How is the road condition in rainy season in Tibet? Need I take any rainproof with me?
The rainy season in Tibet is mainly from June to August and it does have a very bad impact on the roads. However, there are many track maintenance workers and local army would also give help to restore the roads. Generally speaking, it only takes a few hours to make the roads feasible again. As for the rainproof, you are suggested to take raincoat, rain-proof trousers and shoes if you want to trek, climb the mountain or ride a bike. If you have group tours organized by some travel agencies, usually you don't need to take rainproof with you, because Tibet often rains at night and the weather is quite good in the daytime. Besides, the tourist bus is always along with you.
3. What is the best time to travel to Tibet?
Generally speaking, early April is the beginning of travel season, which lasts to mid-June when a large number of Chinese travelers rush to Tibet for summer holiday. Late June to the end of National Holiday is the peak travel season when some important festivals held in Tibet, like Shoton Festival, Gyantse Dawa Festival and Nagqu horse riding Festival. After mid October, Tibet turns to winter and as the visitors reduce greatly, more than half of hotels are closed for the poor reservation.
As for the best time to travel, it depends on your travel requirement.
1. If you want an extremely cheap price, go to Tibet in winter, from December to next March. All the things are quite cheap; even the tourist sites offer 30-50% discount on entrance fee. Hotels are cheap, too. You can enjoy 5 star hotels with less than 100USD including breakfast. Compared with traveling in August, the cost of a winter tour is only 50%-60% of a summer tour. Because of the poor amount of visitors, the Potala Palace allows you to spend even a whole day in it. Besides, the monks are not busy and have spare time to chat with you.
2. If you like trekking, do it at May or September when the monsoon will never bother you and the weather is balmy and pleasant.
3. If you love Mt.Everest and want to see the clear face of it, try to avoid the rainfall season and foggy weather.
4. If you love to visit the grass land in north Tibet, do the tour in July when the flowers bloom in vast grassland and groups of yak and sheep, Tibetan nomad tents spread all over the grassland.
5. Those who want to drive to Tibet through Sichuan-Tibet highway should avoid the rainy season. There will be mudslides, cave-ins and mire on certain sections of the road, blocking the passage of vehicles.
About high altitude sickness
1. What is high altitude sickness? What's the symptom of high altitude sickness?
High altitude sickness may occur at high altitudes (over 2700m) due to the decreasing availability of oxygen. It usually occurs following a rapid ascent and can usually be prevented by ascending slowly. Symptoms often manifest themselves six to ten hours after ascent and generally subside in one to two days, but they occasionally develop into the more serious conditions. Common symptoms of high altitude sickness include shortness of breath, headache, fatigue, stomach illness, dizziness, and sleep disturbance.
2. How to avoid or relieve high altitude sickness?
Keep a good mood, don't be too excited or be too worried about high altitude sickness. Before visiting Tibet, get as healthy as possible, both physically and psychologically.
Take care of yourself and avoid catching cold before going to Tibet, and not to take shower at the first two days after you are in Lhasa to avoid being cold, or you will easily suffer from altitude sickness under weak physical condition.
Do not drink any alcohol on the first two days when you are in Tibet. Drink plenty of water and eat light, high-carbohydrate meals for more energy.
Do not run, jump or do some taxing jobs at the first two days. Being peaceful and having a good rest are important.
