Rei and Touya Were Done Dirty.

It’s time to talk about Touya and Rei in chapter 302.

So um, I don’t know if it’s just me, but I’m kind of starting to think (or notice? Idk) that Dabi and Rei were and are sort of being used... for the benefit of a certain other character.

There’s not a lot of evidence, but..

Enji decided to isolate Shoto from his siblings right after the incident where Touya nearly harmed/killed him (because of Enji), which makes it seem like “he did it to protect Shoto” (that’s obviously not why he did it, but it is framed that way, so some people think that that’s why and blame Touya for it).

Now onto the (very blatant) retcons.

The Quirk Marriage between Rei and Enji is retconned so that it is not forced (even though a light novel explicitly states that Enji forced Rei to marry him). 

This makes Rei more guilty and Enji more innocent than previously established (and that was obviously the purpose of this retcon). Now Rei is guilty of choosing to marry Enji, Enji is not guilty of forcing Rei to marry him, and the narrator of the light novel lied (as well as Touya in chapter 290). 

The timeline is retconned so that Touya's leave takes place before Rei's hospitalization, and it seems like Rei wouldn't have had her breakdown if Touya didn't fake his death (and you know, Touya deserves to be blamed for faking his death to escape from an abusive household after his abuser caused him to literally go up in flames, but Enji doesn’t deserve to be blamed for abusing Rei because he was grieving Touya). It looks like because Enji harbored frustration and guilt over killing Touya, he got worse.

This really helps people to come to the conclusion that “he was in a bad place after losing his son and that’s why he _____” “he didn’t mean to hurt his family,” and “he wouldn’t have done it if it weren’t for Touya.”

At first, I wondered if Fuyumi’s statement was a mistranslation and she actually said something like: “It was around the time/before Mom went away... her condition got even worse... to the point that she couldn’t look at Shoto...” which would make more sense, but it has to be a retcon because...

Apparently, the “once Touya was gone” part was a “mistake” and once you remove it, it’s obvious that Rei’s hospitalization happened first. 🙄

The “once Touya was gone” part makes no difference. Removing it does not make a difference. There is no difference. It still seems like Touya left, and then Enji abused Rei more and more. The “mistake” still is not fixed (psst, it’s not a mistake). Also, Shoto’s supposed to have his scar already. 

And the translation kinda makes it seem like Enji started abusing Shoto because Touya was gone which is false, and even though we’re shown that Enji trained Shoto and abused Rei before Touya died, there are still people who believe that he started being abusive after Touya died and not before-

It’s pretty clear that we’re not supposed to hold what Enji did to Touya against him whatsoever, because he didn’t know what to say to him, he searched for him, he was so upset after losing Touya that he abused his wife more and more and caused her to lose her sanity, and everyone is responsible for what happened to Touya. 

Speaking of everyone being responsible for what happened to Touya...

Natsuo pointed out that Enji is the one who started everything, but shortly after that, Rei told Enji that he's not the only one who's responsible (she actually said that they’re all responsible for the current circumstances- I guess you could read that as “we all have to deal with this as a family now,” but it could’ve been worded differently), rendering Natsuo's first statement- a very true one- relatively pointless. If there are actually people who blame Natsuo or Fuyumi for anything (which is disgusting), then that helps them.

Just a reminder that Hawks said Enji's family has “lightened his load” a short while later, smacking us in the face with what the true goal of this discussion was.

For so long, Touya has just been Dabi and we’ve been waiting for him to reveal that he’s Touya, waiting for his backstory, waiting for him to be a part of the Todofam subplot. For so long, Rei’s just been in the hospital and we’ve been waiting for her to be discharged, waiting to know more about what she went through, waiting for her to actually do something in the subplot... but Enji got to redeem himself first, Enji’s redemption comes first, and Enji comes first...
