So the final character turns out to be based on Ryugen, but it feels kinda weird how there is also one based on Zangetsu and they aren't brothers
Or what if plot reveals they are brothers and he was actually adopted or stollen
I CAN'T BELIEVE HE'S ACTUALLY RYUUGEN?! I made a joke about it when Toten got revealed but I didn't actually expect... (I'm counting it as a win though, which means I guessed three out of sixteen! ...given how wacky some of these got, I'm actually pretty proud of that.)
he seems very sweet though! I hope he and his secret hamsters are very happy together. 🐹

THIS WAS MY EXACT TRAIN OF THOUGHT TOO! either this is an incredible bit of meta foreshadowing, or an incredible bit of Takahashi trolling, and I -- I honestly don't know which is more likely)

well. if i may say so. steve harrington in season four was very 'oh mirror in the sky what is love? can the child within my heart rise above? can i sail through the changing ocean tides? can i handle the seasons of my life? well i've been afraid of changing because i built my life around you... but time makes you bolder and children get older: i'm getting older too...'

#31DaysofHorror Day 21: Night Tide (1961, dir. Curtis Harrington)
thought this would make a good double feature with yesterday's nautical horror. coming fresh off the lighthouse i can't help but think that eggers took some heavy inspiration from night tide — there's the mermaid turning into an octopus in the middle of a sexual dream, there's the old ex-seafarer who seems to hold all the keys but who only speaks in drawn-out stories that may as well be lies, there's the violent climax taking place during a thunderstorm, there's the repeated questioning of reality and whether our narrator is reliable, there's the homoerotic subtext and the text about identity, there's the deconstruction of masculinity through the lens of in this case possessive misogyny. night tide also brings a racial lens into this that is frankly very uncomfortable, but ultimately does pay off thematically.
from a production standpoint, night tide feels more like a stageplay than a film. sets appear unreal and the actors perform theatrically rather than naturalistic, which lends the whole thing a dreamlike quality and plays into the unreliability. the narrative stays light on the horror and feels more like a fairytale mixed with a thriller.
while the greek myths were very much butchered, the portrayal of the mermaids as somewhere between a coven of witches and werewolves was pretty creative. i also particularly loved that mora performed a siren dance rather than a siren song.
i do wish mora's story had been framed less around men. while i think that this does allow for a deeper exploration and understanding of patriarchal power structures, it also ultimately ends up reducing her to an object in these men's lives.
