"Counseling through the Word" Devotional: I am a Light to Others

"Counseling through the Word" Devotional: I am a Light to Others
Scripture: Ephesians 5:8-9 (ESV) - "For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true)." Before you came to know Christ, you walked in darkness, unaware of the truth and lost in the shadows of sin. But now, in Christ, you are no longer in darkness—you are light in the Lord. This transformation is not just a change in your status; it’s a change in your very nature. As a child of light, you are called to reflect the goodness, righteousness, and truth of God to those around you.
Devotional Thought
Light has a powerful influence. It exposes what is hidden, guides those in darkness, and brings warmth and life. As a believer, you are called to be that light in the world. Your life should shine with the love, grace, and truth of Christ, illuminating the path for others and pointing them toward the Savior. Ephesians 5:8-9 reminds us that our walk—our lifestyle—should reflect the light of Christ within us. This means living in a way that is consistent with who we are in Christ, demonstrating His goodness, righteousness, and truth in our actions, words, and attitudes. It’s not enough to simply avoid the darkness; we must actively pursue the light and let it shine through us. Being a light to others is not about drawing attention to yourself but about reflecting Christ. As you walk in the light, others will see the difference in you and be drawn to the hope and truth that you carry. Your life can be a testimony to the transforming power of the Gospel, offering a beacon of hope to those who are still lost in darkness.
Bringing it Home: Applying What We Learned
- Shine Brightly: Reflect on how your life can be a light to those around you. What areas of your life need to better reflect Christ’s goodness, righteousness, and truth? - Guide Others: Be intentional about sharing the light of Christ with those who are struggling or lost. Your words and actions can guide them toward the Savior. - Live Consistently: Make sure your walk matches your talk. As a child of light, live in a way that is consistent with your identity in Christ.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for transforming me from darkness to light. Help me to walk as a child of light, reflecting Your goodness, righteousness, and truth in all I do. May my life be a beacon of hope and guide others to You. Amen.nd truth through me. May my life reflect Your glory and draw others closer to You. Amen.
Questions for Reflection
- In what ways can I better reflect the light of Christ in my daily interactions? - Who in my life is struggling or lost, and how can I guide them towards the Savior? - Does my lifestyle consistently reflect my identity as a child of light?

John the Baptist, Jesus’ own cousin, was in prison for preaching the truth. He had baptized Jesus, had seen the Holy Spirit descend on him like a dove, and had heard the voice of God say “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
John had seen it, and heard it, yet in his despair he began to question it. Why was he in prison if the Son of God had come? Why were the Romans still in charge? Why was Herod still on the throne? Why was there still evil? He sent some disciplescto ask, “Are you the One, or are we to wait for another?”
He had seen! He had heard! And his suffering caused him to doubt. How like John we all are.
How did Jesus reply? “Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news brought to them. And blessed is anyone who takes no offense at me.”
We all want the healing to happen to us, the cleansing, the raising. And we want it to happen now!But just because it isn’t happening to us right this moment does not mean it isn’t happening.
God is working out his design at his own pace. He will bring his kingdom, the new heaven and new earth, in the fullness of his time. And while we wait, often in the midst of sorrow, shadow, death, and oppression, we must turn in faith back to the One who experienced the worst that we could do to him, and who loved us from the cross, to find hope and endurance in trust that his resurrection will also be ours someday.
May that day come quickly! In this Advent season of hopeful waiting, we cry out maranatha!, Lord, come quickly!

Jesus' Compassion and Power The Raising of Lazarus John 11 Explained
"The Power of a Word: Jesus' Command in John 11"
In the Gospel of John, we encounter a powerful moment where the spoken word of Jesus brings a man back to life. John 11 recounts the death and resurrection of Lazarus, a narrative that not only reveals the compassionate nature of Jesus but also His supreme authority over life and death. The climax of this chapter is found in Jesus' simple yet profound command: "Lazarus, come forth" (John 11:43, KJV).
Tumblr media
When Jesus arrived in Bethany, Lazarus had been dead for four days. The situation appeared hopeless; the mourning process was well underway, and the finality of death was evident. Even Martha, who expressed great faith in Jesus, was hesitant when He ordered the stone to be rolled away from the tomb, concerned about the odor of decay. Yet, Jesus had a purpose that went beyond the immediate grief—He intended to reveal the glory of God through an extraordinary miracle.
Before performing the miracle, Jesus prayed to the Father, not for His own benefit but for the sake of those standing by. He wanted them to believe that He was sent by God. Then, with a loud voice, He called out to Lazarus, who had been lifeless in the tomb. The power of Jesus' word alone was enough to reverse the decay, restore life, and bring Lazarus out of the tomb, still bound in his grave clothes.
This command, "Lazarus, come forth," is a powerful reminder of the authority of Jesus. Throughout the Gospels, we see instances where His word alone heals the sick, calms storms, and casts out demons. But in John 11, we see the ultimate demonstration of His power—His word brings the dead to life. This event not only confirmed Jesus' identity as the Son of God but also foreshadowed His own resurrection and the promise of eternal life for all who believe in Him.
For believers today, the story of Lazarus serves as a reminder of the life-giving power of Jesus' words. When we find ourselves in situations that seem beyond hope, when we feel spiritually dead or bound by circumstances, we can take comfort in knowing that Jesus' word is still powerful. He can speak life into our dead places, bringing hope and renewal where there was none.

The Only Two Ways To Salvation | Galatians 3:11-12
Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.” But the law is not of faith, rather “The one who does them shall live by them.”— Galatians 3:11-12
CALL OUT: Shout out to Mark Lerom, who is hosting me at Men's Advance this year. I am excited to be with you, 700+ guys. Let's see what God does!
These verses may sound a bit cryptic if you only read them once, but if you read them multiple times, Paul is saying there are two ways to salvation. Yep, you read that right.
This text contains two quotes from Old Testament Scriptures. The first is from Habakkuk 2:4, and the second is from Leviticus 18:5. The operative connecting phrase is "shall live by," which is found in both. The first declares justification by faith, while the second declares justification by works. The first is humanity's only possible means of salvation, and the second is Jesus Christ's means of providing salvation, who is "The one" of the text.
So yes, there are two ways to salvation. One way, the second way, would require someone to fulfill the entire works of the Pentateuchal law, with its 242 positive commands and 365 prohibitions. Only this person could stand before God at judgment and be justified on the basis of his performance. That person, of course, was Jesus (Matthew 5:17). This way is impossible for us. The first way is our only hope.
Therefore, we have only one possible way to salvation: "by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me" (Galatians 2:20).
Paul is going to beat this point to death, hoping that the Galatians will see the hopeless nature of a doctrine of justification by works. He is trying to beat this out of their minds. The effort he makes is notable. It is exactly what we should do when we encounter questionable ideologies. We should test them against Scripture. Then, we should test them again against the work of Jesus Christ. If they don't pair up, we need to refuse and remove them from our minds and lives because our only hope is faith in Jesus.
Put your faith in him today.
#FaithVsWorks #JustificationByFaith #SalvationThroughChrist #GalatiansInsights #HopeInJesus
ASK THIS:
How does understanding the contrast between justification by faith and justification by works impact your daily walk with Christ?
In what areas of your life do you find yourself relying more on your own efforts rather than trusting in God's grace through faith?
DO THIS: Have faith. There is only one possible way.
PRAY THIS: Father, help me to fully grasp the depth of your grace and the significance of justification by faith alone. Guide me to place my trust entirely in Christ, knowing that my salvation rests solely on His finished work on the cross. Amen.
PLAY THIS: Faithful God.

Psalm 62 - God is everything I need. My soul rests in Him.
“My soul rests in God alone. My salvation is from Him. He alone is my rock, my salvation, and my fortress. I will never be greatly shaken. My soul, wait in silence for God alone, for my expectation is from Him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress. I will not be shaken. My salvation and my honor is with God. The rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God. Trust in Him at all times, you people. Pour out your heart before Him. God is a refuge for us. Also to You, Lord, belongs loving kindness, for You reward every man according to his work.” (vv1-2, 5-8, 12, WEB)
“For God alone my soul waits in silence and quietly submits to Him, For my hope is from Him. Only God gives inward peace, and I depend on Him. God delivers me and exalts me; God is my strong protector and my shelter. ” (v5,6 AMP, CEV, NET)
