BOTD - Marilyn Burns (May 7, 1949 – August 5, 2014) was best known for playing Sally Hardesty in Tobe Hooper's 'The Texas Chain Saw Massacre' (1974), which established her as a scream queen and a catalyst of the final girl trope. Her performance was so authentic and believable that it should have launched her as a major up-and-coming star. Sadly, the industry's view of the horror genre as a low-brow form of entertainment prevented Burns career from developing past this classic of the genre.

Sterling Hayden, born on this day March 26, 1916. was an American actor that specialized in film noir, in films such as John Huston's The Asphalt Jungle (1950), Nicholas Ray's Johnny Guitar (1954), and Stanley Kubrick's The Killing (1956). He became noted for supporting roles, perhaps most memorably as General Jack D. Ripper in Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964), Irish-American policeman Captain McCluskey in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather (1972), and alcoholic novelist Roger Wade in Robert Altman's The Long Goodbye (1973). Tobe Hooper cast Hayden as Howard Anderson in his unrealized version of Venom. Hooper was replaced as director after only a couple of weeks of filming and the film was eventually released in 1981, with Piers Haggard credited as director.

Released on this day in 1974 - Tobe Hooper's 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.' Considered by many to be the scariest movie ever made. Shot on a shoestring budget, but it's power is undeniable. Visceral and unforgettable #TobeHooper #Hooperville #HoopervilleBook #Horror #leatherface

Happy birthday to the great Tobe Hooper. Born on this day in 1943. Cited as one of the most influential horror filmmakers of all time. Hooper's visual flair, varied body of work, and sheer capacity to invoke dread in the audience makes him a titan of the genre and dearly missed #TobeHooper #Hooperville #HoopervilleBook #TexasChainsawMassacre #SalemsLot #Poltergeist #EatenAlive #Lifeforce #InvadersFromMars #TheFunhouse #SpontaneousCombustion #TheMangler #ToolboxMurders #NightTerrors #Djinn #Eggshells #FreddysNightmares
