Local non-profit helping pet families feed furry friends ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. – The past year has been tough for many, and for some, a helping hand with even just the basic needs can go a long way. One local non-profit organization is giving back supporting families with pets. Organizers at the Elkhart County Feral Cat Coalition have been helping pet owners feed their furry friends for years. This year more than ever, they need donations to keep up with the demand, especially cat food, because the need is so high. “It varies from month to month,” said Susan Roue, who does inventory checks for the Elkhart County Feral Cat Coalition. “We can feed between 300 to 600 cats and about 30 to 40 dogs. So we do feed less dogs.” The non-profit organization started 4 Paws Pantry to support families by handing out pet food for furry friends. And with the pandemic, the need is even greater as families try to stay afloat during a difficult time. ‘A lot of these people have strays that they take in,” said Lucy Tener, the secretary for Elkhart County Feral Cat Coalition. “So, that, and then they had to stay home and being able to go get the food or something like that. I think that’s more of the problem is being financially able to get it.” Since the non-profit is low on food inventory to provide for pet families, they can only help families who have six or more cats to feed and cat caretakers who take care of a colony of cats. “The ones that are one to five cats, we believe they could be able to afford that. But, a lot of our people that come have six to 10 to 25 cats to feed, and some have more than that,” Tener said. The non-profit is constantly looking for donations. If you want to donate you can go to the Elkhart County Feral Cat Coalition Facebook page or go to Pet Supplies Plus in Goshen or call (574) 214-7125. The organization will have an online auction on April 27 and a plant sale on June 5, 2021, starting at noon at 29604 County Road 10. All proceeds will go to the pet food donation. var theAppId = "808704082583441"; theAppId = "989981024397295"; (function(d, s, id) var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "http://connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.8&appId=" + theAppId; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); (document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); Source link Orbem News #families #Feed #friends #furry #helping #local #Nonprofit #pet

MotoAmerica Headed Back To Road America With Fans In Attendance
If you’re racing in the 2020 MotoAmerica Series, specifically in the HONOS Superbike class, one thing is certain: You’re hoping that there’s no such thing as déjà vu when the proceedings get rolling again at Road America this weekend for round two as MotoAmerica becomes the first motorcycle series in the U.S. to host fans post COVID-19 shutdown.
<
Tumblr media
Cameron Beaubier (1) dominated the 2020 MotoAmerica Series opener in the HONOS Superbike class at Road America. The series returns to Wisconsin this weekend. Photo by Brian J. Nelson. You don’t have to have a very long memory to recall how four-time MotoAmerica Superbike Champion Cameron Beaubier performed in the opening round of the series. The Monster Energy Attack Performance Yamaha rider demoralized the field with two runaway victories at a racetrack that normally features nail-biting finishes.
Beaubier led every session except for the warm-up on Sunday morning when mechanical issues held him to just one complete lap. He also broke the lap record with his 2:11.145 coming in the second session. Then the Californian simply owned the races, winning the two by margins of 7.8 and 14.3 seconds, respectively.
But that was then, and this is now, and we will find out in a few short days if the rest of the pack has found anything to gain time on Beaubier.
It’s Beaubier’s new teammate Jake Gagne who is closest to Beaubier in the championship after one round, the laid-back Californian finishing third and second in his debut on the second Monster Energy Attack Performance Yamaha YZF-R1.
Gagne had battles in both races with Westby Racing’s Mathew Scholtz and M4 ECSTAR Suzuki’s Bobby Fong, with Scholtz finishing second in race one with Gagne third and Fong fourth. In race two, the other two handed Gagne second place when the pair crashed out together in turn five after Fong clashed with Scholtz. Both men were quick up until that point with both dipping into the 2:11s. Ditto for Gagne.
That left an intense battle for the final podium spot between Scheibe Racing BMW’s Josh Herrin and KWR’s Kyle Wyman and his Ducati Panigale V4 R. Herrin came out on top, by just .011 of a second, and his sixth- and third-place finishes puts him third in the title chase, 24 points behind Beaubier and just two points ahead of Wyman who earned fifth- and fourth-place finishes in the opener.
Scholtz is tied for fifth with Celtic HSBK Racing’s PJ Jacobsen with FLY Racing ADR Motorsports’ David Anthony, Fong, RideHVMC’s Corey Alexander and Thrashed Bike Racing’s Max Flinders rounding out the top 10 in the series standings after one round.
The rider who struggled the most in the series opener is the same rider who most believe can make Beaubier’s life a bit more difficult. That man is Toni Elias. Elias’ opening weekend was atrocious. In race one, the Spaniard’s Suzuki GSX-R1000 lost its chain and in race two the former 2018 MotoAmerica Superbike Champion crashed. He comes to round two with zero points and a real need to get his feet back on the ground on the M4 ECSTAR Suzuki. If there’s a highlight to the weekend for Elias, it’s the fact that his best time over the course of the weekend this year was .675 of a second quicker than his best from a year ago.
Road America 2 Notes
With the debut of the Mini Cup by Motul class and Heritage Cup exhibition class, entries for round two of the 2020 MotoAmerica series have eclipsed the 180-rider mark.
Ticket sales are also on the rise with sales on pace to equal or surpass the 2019 numbers just one race after no spectators were allowed at round one, a race that had record numbers of viewers worldwide. “We’re extremely happy with how the opening round of the 2020 MotoAmerica Series went at Road America,” said MotoAmerica President Wayne Rainey. “We had huge television numbers with FOX Sports, Eurosport, MAVTV, NBC Sports, YouTube and MotoAmerica Live+. The event went off without a hitch, thanks to the efforts of our in-house staff, the staff at Road America, our volunteers, the riders and the teams. Now we get to go back to Road America and race in front of our fans, which will make this second race in Wisconsin even better. The COVID 19 pandemic has impacted everyone’s lives in some way and we’re happy to give our fans the opportunity to get out and see some racing at a world-class facility like Road America. We will be doing so, of course, using COVID guidelines.”
Beaubier’s two victories in the HONOS Superbike class at Road America in round one were the 39th and 40th career AMA Superbike wins for the four-time series champion. Beaubier is third on the all-time AMA Superbike win list behind Mat Mladin (82) and Josh Hayes (61).
Of the active riders in the HONOS Superbike class, Beaubier is on top of the all-time AMA Superbike race wins list with 40 victories. Toni Elias is tied for fourth on the list with Miguel Duhamel with 32 wins. The next highest number of wins by an active MotoAmerica rider is Josh Herrin with eight wins followed by Mathew Scholtz with two.
Road America 2 will mark the debut of the MotoAmerica Mini Cup by Motul class. The Ohvale-spec racing class will feature riders aged as young as seven competing on the go-kart track, which is located by the Carousel corner.
Cameron Beaubier broke his two-year-old lap record at Road America 1, the Monster Energy Attack Performance Yamaha rider putting in his quick lap in the second session – a 2:11.145. Beaubier’s previous best – a 2:11.422 – was set during Superpole in 2018.
Valentin Debise’s racing plans were thwarted by COVID-19 travel restrictions when he was denied a visa to leave his home country of France. Debise was slated to ride the second Scheibe Racing BMW in the HONOS Superbike races at Road America 2.
Six different manufacturers will be represented on the grid at Road America: Yamaha (eight entries), BMW (four entries), Suzuki (four entries), Kawasaki (five entries), Ducati (two entries) and Honda (one entry).
As far as manufacturers go, Yamaha has the most wins at Road America with 21 followed by Suzuki with 17, Honda (12), Ducati (eight) and Kawasaki (four). Yamaha had won seven of eight races until Suzuki swept both races in 2019 with Toni Elias and Josh Herrin. Beaubier started a new Yamaha streak with his two wins in Road America 1 at the end of May.
Riders from six different countries will line up at Road America in the HONOS Superbike class with the U.S., Spain, South Africa, Great Britain, Brazil and Australia all represented.
Cameron Beaubier has now won nine HONOS Superbike races at Road America and that ties him with Mat Mladin as the all-time Superbike race winner in America’s Dairyland. Going into last year’s two races, Beaubier had won seven of the past 10 Superbike races in Elkhart Lake, but he was shut out in 2019 with two second-place finishes. Beaubier ended that streak with his two wins at Road America 1 a month ago.
If you remove Richie Escalante’s two runaway wins in the Supersport class in the opening round of the 2020 MotoAmerica Series at Road America at the end of May, the combined margin of victory for the other support classes on a sunny weekend in Wisconsin was a scant .168 of a second. Yes, .168 of a second.
Tumblr media
Richie Escalante (54) won both Supersport races in the opening round of the 2020 MotoAmerica Series at Road America. Sean Dylan Kelly (40) and Brandon Paasch (21) both had second-place finishes. Photo by Brian J. Nelson.
All that close racing happened without fans in the season opener, but this weekend’s action will take place with fans at the picturesque four-mile-long racetrack in Elkhart Lake as MotoAmerica becomes the first motorcycle series in the U.S. to host fans post COVID-19 shutdown.
Like the premier HONOS Superbike class with Cameron Beaubier’s first-round domination, the Supersport Series opener also featured a double winner with HONOS Racing’s Escalante starting his season off with a bang with two race victories on his new Kawasaki ZX-6R. Escalante topped Celtic HSBK’s Brandon Paasch in race one by 11.5 seconds and M4 ECSTAR Suzuki’s Sean Dylan Kelly by 16.1 seconds in race two to complete his perfect weekend. On track, Paasch was second both times out, but he was disqualified from race two when his Yamaha YZF-R6 was found to be under the mandatory weight limit. Kelly, meanwhile, had his troubles in race one when he crashed out.
With his two closest competitors each failing to score points in one of the two races, Escalante leads the championship heading into this weekend’s Road America 2 by 24 points over the surprising Nate Minster. Minster and his TSE Racing Yamaha finished fourth in each race and he ended the weekend four points clear of Kevin Olmedo in the championship chase. Olmedo earned his first Supersport podium in race one but slipped back to 10th in race two. Paasch and Kelly are tied for fourth – 30 points behind Escalante.
Going into the opening round of the Liqui Moly Junior Cup Series, it was almost a forgone conclusion that defending champion Rocco Landers would have his way with the rest of the field. After all, Landers did win 14 Liqui Moly Junior Cup races last year en route to the title.
But it seems as though no one reminded Dominic Doyle of that.
Doyle won both races over the course of the weekend – by the slightest of margins. On Saturday, the South African beat Landers by .078 of a second. On Sunday, it was even closer with the BARTCON Kawasaki besting Landers by a Bond-like .007 of a second. For those not keeping track, that translates to Landers and his Landers Racing Kawasaki missing out on victory in two races by a combined .085 of a second.
With his two wins, Doyle goes back to Road America with a 10-point lead on Landers. Third place is held jointly by Benjamin Gloddy, the New Hampshire resident ending up fifth and third in the two races on his Quarterley Racing/On Track Development Kawasaki and Celtic HSBK Racing’s Samuel Lochoff, who mirrored Gloddy’s results with a third and a fifth. Westby Racing’s Cody Wyman heads to Wisconsin for round two tied for fifth in the point standings with Rodio Racing’s Gus Radio.
Just when you thought things couldn’t get closer than .007 of a second, they did. In Saturday’s opening round of the Twins Cup Series, 1833CJKNOWS’ Kaleb De Keyrel won by just .002 of a second. And guess who was second? Yes, it was Landers – in his Twins Cup debut on the Roadracing World Young Guns/Sportbiketrackgear.com Suzuki. On Sunday the same two went at it again – this time joined in the battle by Robem Engineering’s Jackson Blackmon. Believe it or not, Landers again came up short. Just short. Like .082 of a second short and that put him in third place as Blackmon beat him to the line by just .001 of a second. So in four races, Landers lost out on victory by a combined margin of .169 of a second. We have a feeling that Landers might show up for round two just a bit fired up.
With De Keyrel 14 points ahead of Landers heading into round two, Blackmon is third, a further five points behind. Jason Madama, who put his Syndicate Racing/Apex Assassin’s Yamaha on the podium in race one, is fourth in the points and five points clear of his friend/rival Chris Parrish.
PJ Jacobsen made his Stock 1000 debut a successful one, the Celtic HSBK Racing Ducati rider beating Altus Motorsports’ Cameron Petersen and his Suzuki GSX-R1000 by 4.26 seconds with Ride HVMC Racing’s Corey Alexander third on his Kawasaki ZX-10R. Mesa37Racing/Tango’s Stefano Mesa and Michael Gilbert Racing’s Michael Gilbert rounded out the top five with the Stock 1000 class only having one race in the opener.
Road America Support Class Notes…
MotoAmerica has upped the minimum weight requirement for the Ducati Panigale V4 R to 180 kilograms from 170 kg in the Stock 1000 class, effective immediately. PJ Jacobsen rode the Celtic HSBK Ducati to victory in the Stock 1000 class in the opening round of the series at Road America and will have to race with 22 pounds added to the Panigale for round two.
The largest grid for round two at Road America? That would be the Twins Cup class with 28 of the twin-cylinder motorcycles entered for the second round of the MotoAmerica Series. Stock 1000 features the second highest entry with 23 followed by Supersport with 22 and Liqui Moly Junior Cup with 20. The premier HONOS Superbike class will feature 24 entries for Road America 2.
Double duty: Rocco Landers isn’t the only Liqui Moly Junior Cup rider pulling double duty this weekend. While Landers will compete again in both Liqui Moly Junior Cup and Twins Cup, he will be joined by Cameron Jones. Jones, who rides the only Honda CBR500R in the Liqui Moly Junior Cup, will race a Honda CBR600RR in the Supersport class at Road America this weekend.
The official track length at Road America is 4.048 miles, which makes it the longest on the MotoAmerica schedule. The track features 14 turns and is affectionally known as “four miles of fun.”

Road America 2 Notes…

Random History: Alka-Seltzer- 1931, United States
The Alka-Seltzer story began in the winter of 1928, when Hub Beardsley, president of the Dr. Miles Laboratories, visited the offices of a local newspaper in Elkhart, Indiana. There was a severe flu epidemic that year. Many of Beardsley's own employees were out sick. But Beardsley learned that no one on the newspaper's staff had missed a day of work as the result of influenza. The paper's editor explained that at the first hint of a cold symptom, he dosed staff members with a combination of aspirin and baking soda.
Beardsley was impressed. Both medications were ancient, but their combination was novel. Since his laboratories specialized in home medicine chest remedies, he decided to test the formula. He asked his chief chemist, Maurice Treneer, to devise an attractive new tablet. Of course, what Treneer created- the pill that went "plop, plop, fizz, fizz"- was more novel than the combination of aspirin and baking soda and the gimmick was instrumental in popularizing the product.
Beardsley took a supply of the experimental tablets with him on a Mediterranean cruise. His wife reported that they cured her headaches. Beardsley himself found they soothed the ravages of excessive shipboard dining and drinking. And fellow passengers who tried the tablets claimed they cured seasickness.
The fizzing tablet, which prompted a hung-over W. C. Fields to joke, "Can't anyone do something about that racket!" bowed in 1931, during the Depression. Radio promotion was heavy. But Alka-Seltzer's sales really skyrocketed in 1933, when Americans emerged parched from the dry spell of Prohibition.
Ironically, one of Alka-Seltzer's original two ingredients, aspirin, is a strong stomach irritant for many people. This awareness caused Miles Laboratories to introduce an aspirin-free tablet called Alka-2 Antacid in the mid-1970's.
Today a wide variety of non-sodium, non-aspirin antacids neutralize stomach acid. A glance at the medicine chest shelf will reveal that the modern components are aluminum, calcium, bismuth, magnesium and phosphates and the one ancient ingredient is dried milk solids.

Another economic downturn is just a matter of time
Tumblr media
JUST SOUTH of Indiana’s border with Michigan lies the city of Elkhart, with a population of just over 50,000. Apart from a small, shop-lined high street near where one river, the Elkhart, flows into another, the St Joseph, the city is mostly shapeless, tree-lined and suburban. Scattered around the outskirts are the factories of several of America’s largest producers of recreational vehicles (RVs). Rows of the finished products rest outside the giant sheds in which they are made.
Modern RVs are impressive, leather-upholstered land yachts fitted with flat-screen televisions and gas fireplaces, the perfect vessels in which to navigate the American continent. The RV business is one of the economy’s most strongly cyclical. Sales of big-ticket items like homes and cars inevitably rise and fall with the business cycle, but RVs are especially susceptible to such swings. It is only once cars and homes have been upgraded that consumers consider splashing out on rolling living quarters. And when financial fear stalks the land, RV-makers have a particularly hard time.

In Elkhart, more than a quarter of people in employment work on RVs. When the global financial crisis in 2007-08 plunged the world economy into its worst downturn since the 1930s, employment in the city’s factories fell by nearly half. The unemployment rate almost quintupled, to 20%. Incomes and population dropped. Elkhart was among the first places President Barack Obama visited after his inauguration in 2009: it exemplified the extraordinary economic challenge facing his administration.
But then the city edged away from the brink. By the end of Mr Obama’s first term its unemployment rate had fallen by more than half. By the end of his second, as President Donald Trump took office, the rate had more than halved again, and earlier this year it dropped to the extremely low level of 2% as Americans started to splash out on luxuries again. Companies in the area cannot fill the jobs they advertise. The good times are back.
But for how long? One day, the forces that turned the palest, thinnest of green shoots after the financial crisis into the second-longest American economic expansion on record will change direction, igniting a new recession—for which the world is woefully unprepared. When that might happen is hard to say. Studies of American business cycles suggest that the economy is as likely to flip from growth to contraction early in the life of a boom as later on. Indeed, America has no records of an expansion lasting longer than a decade, though many countries do: Australia, Canada and the Netherlands have all enjoyed sustained growth lasting more than 20 years in recent memory. Yet all good things come to an end.
It might not take much to bring on the next recession
Though there is no settled view on what constitutes a global recession, worldwide slumps are usually marked out by a sharp slowdown in global growth and a decline in real GDP per person. Roughly speaking, there have been four global recessions since 1980: in the early 1980s, the early 1990s, in 2001, and in the crisis of 2007-08. Each was marked by a slowdown in GDP growth, a sharp decline in trade growth, and retrenchment in the financial sector. According to the Behavioural Finance and Financial Stability project at Harvard University, an average of four countries a year suffered a banking crisis between 1800 and 2016. From 1945 to 1975, when the global financial system was tightly controlled, most years were entirely free of banking crises. Since 1975, however, an average of 13 countries have found themselves in the throes of one each year. Since the 1970s, the deregulation of national banking systems and the lifting of constraints on the global flow of capital ushered in a new era of financial boom and bust. Re-regulation since 2009 has not fundamentally changed this picture. The current value of outstanding cross-border financial claims, at $30trn (and growing), is below the peak of $35trn reached in 2008, but well above the 1998 level of $9trn.
Booms tend not to die of old age, and there are killers aplenty lurking in the shadows. Globally, policy is slowly but surely becoming less supportive of boom conditions. True, America only recently passed a budget-busting tax reform, which promises to swell its deficit and thus to boost American spending. But in most other rich countries government borrowing is flat to falling. Across much of the emerging world, too, deficits are expected to shrink in coming years. China’s government is trying to rein in the credit-dependency of its economy, with some success.
Central banks are pitiless executioners of long-lived booms, and monetary policy has shifted. America’s Federal Reserve has slowly been raising its benchmark interest rate since late 2015. The Bank of England followed suit in 2017 and is expected to continue to increase interest rates slowly over the next few years. The European Central Bank (ECB) will probably conclude its stimulative bond-buying in December and may begin to raise its benchmark rate in late 2019. Global financial conditions, though still fairly relaxed, have become slightly less so recently. Most central banks have become less concerned about economic weakness and more worried about inflation. If they overdo their reaction, they could slow down the global economy more than intended.
America’s Fed, in particular, is treading a difficult path. Over the past few decades economic and financial cycles in the global economy have become more closely connected. Some economists reckon that the link remains loose. Eugenio Cerutti of the IMF, Stijn Claessens of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) and Andrew Rose of the University of California, Berkeley reckon that global financial factors explain no more than a quarter of the movement of capital across borders. Others disagree. Hélène Rey, of the London Business School, links the global financial cycle to worldwide swings in appetite for risk, which is in turn governed by the stance of American monetary policy. Òscar Jordà and Alan Taylor, of the University of California, Davis and colleagues have found cross-border wobbling in financial variables such as equity prices is at its most synchronised for more than a century.
Shifts in America’s monetary stance echo around global markets. In response to the financial crisis and the weak recovery that followed, the Fed worked hard to bolster American spending, mainly through quantitative easing (QE), the practice of printing money to buy assets such as government bonds. The effects of this policy were felt in the rest of the world; as Fed purchases depressed the yield on American government bonds, investors sought better returns elsewhere. Money flooded into the emerging world. The dollar-denominated debt of emerging-market firms other than banks roughly quadrupled. Chinese corporations now hold dollar-denominated debt of roughly $450bn, compared with almost none in 2009.
A more hawkish Fed means trouble for such borrowers. Since 2014 the dollar has risen by nearly 25%, on a trade-weighted basis, buoyed by a stronger American economy and rising interest rates. A dearer dollar makes life difficult for those with local-currency assets and dollar debts. As such borrowers tighten their belts, credit contracts. Trouble in emerging markets like Turkey and Argentina increases the appetite for safe-haven currencies. The resulting appreciation adds to the burden on other emerging markets, threatening to set off a cycle of contagion. The emerging world may avoid a cascading financial crisis for now, but its fast-growing economies, accounting for ever more of global growth, face a painful adjustment that will weigh on advanced economies too.
New world disorder
As this special report will explain, the rich world is ill-equipped to manage such stress. Handling a bout of economic weakness used to be simple: the central bank would cut short-term interest rates until conditions improved. But in the aftermath of the global financial crisis rates around the world fell to zero, and the weak recovery that followed kept them pinned there. Even the Fed, which has chalked up the most post-crisis rate increases, will almost certainly enter the next recession with a historically small amount of room to cut rates. In a downturn, central banks are likely to turn almost immediately to other tools used after the 2007-08 crisis, such as qe. But such tools are politically harder to deploy, and their stimulative effects are less certain.
Fiscal stimulus could pick up the slack, but mobilising government budgets to aid the economy will also prove a tall order. Across advanced economies the average government debt load has risen above 100% of GDP, up more than 30 percentage points from 2007. Debt in emerging markets has risen as well, from an average of roughly 35% of GDP to over 50%. Plans for large-scale fiscal stimulus were politically difficult to enact during the financial crisis, and will be harder still the next time around. In Europe, any debate about government borrowing threatens to revive the disastrous political showdowns of the euro-area debt crisis.
In the end politics may prove the greatest stumbling block to managing a new global downturn. A decade ago, when the weak link was a disintegrating financial system, co-operation among governments—from the close co-ordination of central-bank action around the world to the establishment of the G20 as a crisis talking-shop—helped prevent a bigger disaster. The world looks very different now. The American economy, which remains the linchpin of the global economic system, is now presided over by Mr Trump. Britain is close to leaving the European Union, possibly in chaotic fashion. The political climate across some of the rest of the EU has turned ugly. Most advanced economies now have viable populist or nationalist parties, waiting to capitalise on the first sign of renewed economic distress. Many emerging markets have regressed as well. Nationalism and strongman tactics are in the ascendant. Power in China is worryingly concentrated in the hands of one man, Xi Jinping. Thanks to Mr Trump’s trade war, relations between America and China have become openly hostile.
In 2007 financial markets were primed for a massive crisis, but governments were able to draw heavily on their monetary, fiscal and diplomatic resources to prevent that crisis from destroying the global economy. Today the financial dominoes are not set up quite so precariously, but in many ways the broader economic and political environment is far more forbidding. It might not take much to bring on the next recession.

AT&T Mobility Fired Me for Being Pregnant
Demerit-based attendance policies discriminate against pregnant women.
When I found out I was pregnant in the fall of 2014, I was so grateful to have a job with AT&T Mobility.  My husband and I both worked as sales representatives at the company’s store in Elkhart, Ind. Our jobs provided us a stable, comfortable life that we looked forward to sharing with our son. We made $14 an hour, plus commission, and AT&T Mobility provided generous benefits that included paid maternity leave. We both loved our jobs and looked forward to fulfilling sales careers with the company.
But that hope evaporated as my pregnancy progressed.  I had severe nausea that wasn’t just “morning sickness.” I felt sick nearly all the time and had trouble sleeping.  In my second and third trimesters, things got even worse, and I developed cholestasis, a  disabling liver condition characterized by intense itching all over the body.  These difficulties meant that I occasionally was late for my shift, or needed to stay home, and that I had to visit my doctor more often.
These symptoms were scary and stressful on their own.  I never dreamed that they also would cost me my job.
AT&T Mobility has a demerit-based attendance policy – what many employers call a “no fault” policy. What that means is that if you are late or miss work the company assigns you a point, or a fraction of a point. If you receive eight points, you are fired.  The company has a list of situations that qualify as exceptions to the policy and won’t cost you a point, but pregnancy isn’t one of them.
Think about how many women you’ve seen working at your local AT&T Mobility store.  There are thousands of us, all around the country.  Then think about them struggling not to get fired while going through nine months of pregnancy.  And think about how many of them lose their jobs before they even make it to their due dates.
Though my male co-workers were allowed to come and go virtually without penalty, I kept racking up points due to my pregnancy.  If throwing up due to severe morning sickness made me late, I got a fraction of a point. Once, I started bleeding and had to be hospitalized overnight. I accrued a point for that too.
By the time I went out on Family and Medical Leave Act leave in late May 2015, I had accumulated close to eight points.  My store manager pestering me with questions about how long I’d be out, and even trying to convince me to take less than the leave I was entitled to by law.  He told me that he didn’t believe new mothers could be counted on to come back to work.  I felt like I had done something wrong by wanting to start a family.
My son, Luca, was born on June 1, 2015, three weeks early.  In the joyous, sleep-deprived fog that is all too familiar to any new mom, I tried not to think too much about AT&T Mobility’s attendance policy, though I did have to field at least one call from my manager again asking about my return date.  I was grateful to have several weeks of paid maternity leave to spend with my baby boy. I know a lot of women aren’t that lucky.
Tumblr media
But two days after I returned to work, my manager informed me that additional points had been “processed” during my maternity leave, and I was fired. He claimed he’d appealed to the company, but that the points couldn’t be argued with.  I was heartbroken to lose not just my job, but the hope of a career.  All at once, what should have been the happiest time of our lives was the most stressful. My husband and I struggled after I lost my income. We managed to get by though we had to give up our apartment and move in with his parents.
I eventually started a new job, and my husband and I hope that we will be able to live on our own again soon, for Luca’s sake. But it’s not clear if it will give the same potential for advancement. In the meantime, I want to make sure that what happened to me doesn’t happen to other women – at AT&T Mobility or anywhere else. So today, with the help of the American Civil Liberties Union, the law firm of Cohen Milstein Sellers and Toll, and Indianapolis attorney Lynn Toops, I filed a lawsuit in federal court on behalf of all women employed by AT&T Mobility who have been pregnant and harmed by the point-based attendance policy.
AT&T Mobility’s so-called “no-fault” attendance policy penalizes workers for absences even if they can be justified as being medically necessary. I have learned that this can be a violation of the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the FMLA.  Under all of those laws, workers may be entitled to take time off to address their own medical needs or those of a close family member, making it illegal for employers to impose negative repercussions for such absences. That includes pregnancy, which is one of the most common reasons that women are pushed out of work in the United States – even though this year marks 40 years since the PDA was enacted.
It’s time for companies like AT&T Mobility to scrap their unfair point systems and do their part to make sure that pregnant workers can keep their jobs while starting their families.

Detroit Home With Insane Decor Smashes Records as the Week’s Most Popular Home
Photo by Elaine Cromie, Special to the Detroit Free Press; realtor.com
This week, we tallied up the numbers, and one jaw-dropping home stood way above the rest. We’re used to seeing chart-toppers rack up tens of thousands of views, but an amazing home in Detroit set new records as it zoomed past millions of views—in a single week!
The internet went bonkers for the Motor City masterpiece, thanks to the over-the-top furnishings, distinctive decor, kitschy knickknacks, custom cars, and assorted collectibles all crammed inside. The most intriguing aspect? Everything inside the home is included in the purchase price of $550,000. Even the two classic cars.
The retired homeowner, Ronald Nassar—known as Mr. Ronnie—is looking to downsize and leave his lifetime of curation behind. For fans of vintage collectables, it’s a true treasure trove.
Vintage fever was also responsible for this week’s runner up. A 1970s-era home in Kansas with groovy interiors is up for auction, with no minimum and no reserve. The 23-acre property comes with the retro-fantastic house, workshop, and even its own lake.
Other notable properties cracking the Top 10 this week include a mega mansion being sold by Tiger Woods‘ ex, Elin Nordegren, a fired football coach leaving behind the Razorbacks and his Arkansas home, and a charming (and cheap) fixer-upper in Montana.
So while we pool our money to make an offer on the delightful Detroit home, please scroll on down for all of this week’s most popular homes.
10. Undisclosed address, North Palm Beach, FL
Price: $49,500,000 Why it’s here: Divorce pays dividends? Elin Nordegren used her reported $100 million divorce settlement from Tiger Woods to buy a piece of property in 2011 for $12 million. The 38-year-old former model then tore down a home and built the mega mansion now for sale. The oceanfront property offers indoor-outdoor living, light-filled spaces, and a Caribbean-inspired vibe.

9. 9301 Burlington Dr, Detroit, MI
Price: $899,000 Why it’s here: A custom California contemporary—in Detroit? You’re not lost. San Diego-based architect Mark Steele designed the home in 1979, with an open floor plan kitchen, a master suite with private balcony, a landscaped backyard, and huge deck. The light-filled spaces contain multiple skylights and high ceilings. While you may want to switch out the red paint and some light fixtures, the listing description assures us the place doesn’t require a renovation.

8. 102 Clayton St, Plains, MT
Price: $64,000 Why it’s here: Built in 1911, the price tag on this charmer is low enough for a dedicated DIY-er to get to work. It needs some serious renovations, but the quaint one-bedroom still features many original details, like ornate ceilings, a claw-foot tub, and hardwood floors, moldings, and wainscoting.
