Hello guys! I'm here to showcase a house I made that I'm quite proud of c: This is the first house I'm showing off like this so I hope you like it! This is a no CC build and I think I covered everything needed for a baby challenge c: Oh and did I mention you can download this lot off the gallery for FREE? No early access needed!
My gallery ID is: Annoyingtiger888
Here is the listing on the gallery:
Tumblr media
And the description:
For those insane enough to tackle the 400 Baby Achievement (Baby Boom) and who aren't a big stickler for rules, I have created a mansion around raising a whole cart load of kids as quickly as possible! Featuring stunning blues, questionable carpet choices, and plenty of entertainment, this mansion is perfect for challenges that make you lose your sanity! :)
Without further ado, let's step into my office and tour your future home!
I promise the trees are much more beautiful when they have leaves <3 I added several cherry trees and a Japanese maple.
Tumblr media
Outside, you have access to a hot tub with a roof (for if it rains) so if you keep your doors locked, you can easily woo someone outside ;)
Tumblr media
The entrance features lovely bamboo and square bushes.
Tumblr media
The living room is quite simple with an entertainment center, smart speaker, and a very comfy sofa!
Tumblr media
There's even an aquarium to fill with the prettiest of blue fish.
Tumblr media
Across from that is a lovely, tall bookcase to house all your favorite reads. It even comes with a ladder for those short people like me!
Tumblr media
Next up is the kitchen. As a soon-to-be mother of 400, you probably won't have a lot of time to cook. Therefore, you have a lovely tea kettle, a slow cooker and a microwave! Easy, fast meals (because who cares about being healthy?)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next is the main bathroom. It features a bathtub/shower combo on the off chance you decide to clean up those stinky youngins! Look at those cute whales~
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The main feature of this house is, of course, your bedroom! The largest room in the home by far, you can lock yourself away in here and play around on the computer or get some much needed rest. Don't worry, I'm sure the brats will be okay!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next, we head upstairs. There's a lovely desk to be used by the children for their homework. There's also a seance table so you can call in Bonehilda (and lock her inside so she stops running away to get pregnant with twins with that prick from Willow Creek.)
Tumblr media
I've added a treadmill in case you're like me and dislike the way heavyset sims looks. Your mama can keep her weight in check!
Tumblr media
Child room one is for infants and toddlers, complete with a changing station and trash can! There's even a night light to prevent monsters. (I realize now I forgot to add a basinet but that's an easy fix when you move in <3)
Tumblr media
Child room 2 is all for the kids, featuring 2 sets of bunk beds and 2 desks so they can get their homework done quickly. It also has a light to protect from monsters. The best part? Those tree branches wrap around them while they're sleeping and protect them as they sleep (read: prevent them from getting up and bothering you.)
Tumblr media
Finally, child room 3 is all about the teens. It is literally just beds but, hey, at least they have sheer curtains on them to give them some privacy!
Tumblr media
The upstairs bathroom is where you can potty train your toddlers while also washing clothes.
Tumblr media
The long room at the front of the house is a play room, build to help your little ones build skills quickly so you can kick them out ASAP!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The second floor balcony has really lovely couches and a painting easel so you can make easy money!
Tumblr media
Out back, we have a lovely pool for you, a kiddy pool for the brats, a wishing well if you decide this world is too much for you to bear and a lovely swing set! There's even a water sprout and a money drinking boba :D
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the first floor balcony out back, you have a beautiful Patchyman to help around the house and with the gardening! You can also look at the stars, I guess.
Tumblr media
On the side of the house, there's plenty of planters, covered by the roof, so you don't have to worry about those pesky season requirements! There's also a lovely couch for you to lounge on should you choose to make your kids garden instead.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thank you so much for choosing Rainmustfallts4 as your realtor! This house may cost you a few organs but, I assure you, it is the PERFECT home for your 400 brats, a true legacy of your own, or even a bunch of slaves used solely for the purpose of accruing mass amounts of wealth quickly.
Whatever you're looking for, the 400 Baby Challenge Mansion is perfect for you! Now that you're completely hooked and can't wait to move in, please sign your name in blood on the dotted line!
x_________________
Thanks again for visiting Rainmustfallts4 realty, serving the community since yesterday morning!
(no refunds, all sales final, tiger is not responsible for any thieving foxes, failed challenges or children being taken by grim. nor is she responsible if bonehilda runs away and comes back pregnant with twins. as this is a blood oath, a demon may come to collect your soul one day but he's probably nice and kind and just wants a friend.)
Tumblr media
for real, though, I hope you guys like this build. I am NOT a builder, I'm just an idiot with strange ideas. I'm not good at the little details or making things look normal/match/decent. I just use whatever looks cool, honestly lol I did spend many hours on this so, hopefully, you all consider it decent at the very least.

HOW HAVE OFFICE SPACE INTERIORS EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS?
Tumblr media
An essential process that quickens growth and development is ‘evolution’. While evolution is a choice, change cannot be avoided. The evolution of office space interior design is mirrored by societal, technological, and cultural shifts. This suggests that workplaces are fair indicators of the condition of human society’s development and that changes in them reflect the ongoing improvements in a professional’s productivity and well-being. The contrasts are more obvious when two decades are compared side by side, such as the 1960s and the present decade.
In the decades before the computer revolution, each desk was equipped with a large desktop monitor. This era evokes the feeling of cubicles and a practical vibe. Thanks to increased work flexibility, employees may now work when, where, and how they choose. Due to this development, today’s workplaces enable staff to remain productive while still showcasing their own characteristics.
CHECK OUT THE CHANGES MILLENNIALS ARE INCORPORATING INTO THIS ERA:CASUAL WORK CORNERS:
There was a revolution toward casualness. Casual workplaces were developed to encourage individuality. These spaces were created to support employees’ long hours analyzing data, creating visuals, and doing other duties. The staff’s dress has also become more relaxed. Therefore, the new dress code has to be reflected in workplace architecture and its casualness. It can be playful or in monotones. Whatever the situation, the office interior should reflect the causal mood or vibe.
NATURAL RESOURCES:
Over the past decade, exposed brick walls and wood floors have become common in offices. This deviation from functional materials gave an office personality and charm while creating a comfortable working environment. Now office furniture incorporates recyclable materials made of bamboo, rattan, hemp, organic cotton, etc.
HOMEY APPEARANCES:
The Internet has completely changed how professionals operate with faster connections, thinner PCs, and more potent mobile devices. Modern employees may perform tasks from almost anywhere, even at home, in this decade. Thus, office interior design takes on a cozier, more “homey” aspect in this situation. Couches, bean bags, soft chairs, and even beds are now being included in modern office furniture. Additionally, lighter colors and warm lighting are becoming increasingly popular.
BREAKOUT LOUNGES:
The importance of employee communication and collaboration has increased, and workplace structures now have the finest office interior design to support it. Modern office interior designs that include hubs and lounges promote individual and group interaction. Breakout zones are designated areas where staff members may mingle and unwind while enjoying recreational pursuits like video games, pool tables, and other forms of entertainment.
ERGONOMIC FURNITURE:
Businesses are starting to improve employee well-being by taking a more proactive approach. By selecting the best office interior design, many firms are now purchasing ergonomically built furniture with a strong focus on comfort and health. Organizations that value creative collaboration makes their interiors brightly illuminated using natural light sources. Chairs, desks, and accessories are used in offices to match the posture and comfort of an employee. That’s how companies are bringing about changes for employee well-being and health.

Summer’s a Knife - Epilogue
Catch up on Chapter 16 here
But everything feels different. Falling in love has changed everything. It sounds ridiculous, even to you, because in reality you and Van have only been together just shy of three months. But something about returning to the city where you first met him in that crowded bar has your heart feeling raw. This past year has been the craziest- but no doubt best- one of your life. Tomorrow it’ll be one full year since you swallowed your inhibitions down, letting Van lead you back to his hotel room. When you recall it you can still feel the adrenaline rush that had poured through you at his proposition, your pounding heart echoing the memory.
Word count: ~3.5k
Epilogue
January 2020
“Are you ready?” You yell up the staircase, before sighing to yourself in exasperation, turning to your own things. Your luggage is opened up all over the floor by the front door, and you’re meticulously double-checking that you’ve got everything packed.
You’re scouring over one of your bags when you hear Van’s heavy footsteps coming down the stairs. He’s got a duffle bag slung over one shoulder, his MacBook open and glowing in one of his hands. It wobbles with each step down, and you practically feel nauseous from Van’s carelessness.
“How can you hold that in one hand?” You ask, shaking your head. “What if you tripped?”
Van rolls his eyes playfully, but doesn’t bother with a response. He lets his duffle come to rest by the base of the stairs, proceeding towards the sectional so that he can flop down with his computer.
“I literally just bought a new mascara,” You complain. No matter how many times you’ve searched your things, it hasn’t magically appeared. “Have you seen it?”
Van is engrossed in his screen, not hearing a word you said.
“Babe?” You ask a bit louder, snapping him to attention.
“What?”
“Have you seen my mascara? I just bought it yesterday and I thought I left the bag on the coffee table.”
“Oh, yeah,” Van gestures absently toward the hall. “I put it in the bathroom.”
“The one down here?” You ask incredulously, rising from where you’re kneeling on the floor. Sure as shit, your brand new tube of mascara is still in its cardboard packaging on the sink in the bathroom down the hall.
“I don’t know why you’d put it in there,” You scold him, annoyed. “You know I don’t keep anything down here!”
Van sighs. “I obviously didn’t know that,” He replies, terse. “I thought I was putting it away. You know I’m still trying to figure everything out.”
You let out your own tense exhale, but drop the argument. Learning to live together these past two months hasn’t exactly been a dream, but Van was right. He was trying. You were both trying. Trying to learn each other’s daily routines, trying to divide household duties equally, trying to work with each other’s quirks. Still, you wouldn’t trade getting to wake up next to Van every morning for anything.
And by every morning, that meant every morning. Because the band’s touring schedule is no joke, and once you and Van were established you realized that the trajectory of your career was going to have to make some adjustments. That’s how a few discussions with Denise lead to you finally being promoted, and to a position that allowed you to work from home well over a majority of the time. Any obligations you needed to be in the office for were going to be planned in advance, so by the summer you’d be done being mentored and you’d be free to travel with Van.
“Wanna see the mockups?” Van interrupts your thoughts.
“You got the mockups?” You ask excitedly, tossing the mascara into your suitcase before heading for the couch. “Yes I wanna see!”
You plop down next to him, snuggling into his side. He’s looking at a file Capitol has just sent him with full mockups of a few different options for the CD sleeves.
THE SUMMER, the spines of the CD sleeves read in each of the files. It looks so official, seeing the album title next to the Capitol Records logo. It feels like only yesterday when Van tried to be nonchalant when he mentioned to you that he’d been pitching that as the album name to the boys. It had completely stunned you then, and it still feels surreal now.
Because the album’s about you, you’ve learned. Almost all of the eleven tracks are dedicated to Van telling the story of your relationship, from that magical night in San Diego, to him drinking away the pain of missing you on the night of his birthday. There’s a song about the steamy encounter you two had in the car during your road trip to Phoenix, and the last track on the album details that night things almost ended, but instead became the best thing that’s ever happened to you.
“Gone is still the best,” You tell him, spotting where they’d decided to put it on the tracklist. It’s two up from the bottom, which feels appropriate. It was a ballad, Van wailing soulfully about the guilt that hangs over him from leaving his parents high and dry in order to make his music career work. His parents haven’t heard it yet, but you were in tears when Van played it for you. It’s just his voice and the piano, and you’re sure the fans will love it like you do. He’s nestled it between two upbeat tracks, always careful to keep things on a positive note.
Van snorts, no doubt remembering your messy tears while you sat next to him on the piano bench in the studio that one afternoon. “Which cover do you like best?” He asks, flashing you the different options.
The cover for this album was a lobster, symbolic of the lobster dinner Van got the night he took you to dinner. Tim had done one illustration that looked more like the alligator from The Ride, and one that was more of an outline like The Balance, and a few variations of each. You chew the inside of your cheek as you examine them carefully.
“That one,” You say quickly when Van scrolls past the sleeve with the Ride-esque realistic sketch. “If the lobster was doing something, like how the toucan’s sipping that drink, I’d say that. But I like this one.”
Van takes in your opinion, nodding very seriously. “I’ll have to ask the lads, we can all take a vote.”
There’s a moment of quiet contemplation as Van looks over the tracklist for what was probably the millionth time.
You’re still taking in the details of the cover, trying to wrap your mind around the fact that Van has immortalized so many details of your life in an actual, physical thing that people would soon be hearing, when your phone vibrates loudly against the mantle. You leap up, knowing it’s Mary before you even see the screen.
“Are you ready?” Mary asks on speakerphone, her voice bringing Van’s focus back to the task at hand.
“I’m ready,” You tell her, relieved to be free of any blame. “Are you ready, Van?”
“I only need a second!” He shouts loud enough so that Mary can hear him. “Lemme send this email!”
“Hurry up!” Her voice cuts through the living room. “You and Theo are the worst!”
“Oi!” Van shouts in indignation, but then there’s the beep of Mary disconnecting, clearly not entertaining any of Van’s excuses.
“I’ll take my stuff to the car,” You say as Van taps away at his keyboard. “Where’s the keys?”
“Kitchen,” Van murmurs, distracted, and you head around the corner to grab them from the kitchen island.
You zip your bags closed and sling your purse over your shoulder, hauling them out of the front door and onto the driveway. There are some birds chirping in the privacy bamboo, and a few scatter from their hiding spots as they’re startled by you opening up the back hatch of the Range Rover.
The sun is beaming down from it’s glowing spot in the bright blue morning sky, a stark contrast to the climate you’ve spent your January birthday in when you lived in your hometown. You’re used to giant snowdrifts, freezing temperatures, a snow day off of school if you were lucky. You should be used to this by now; balmy birthday weekends that commence with packing up for the traditional San Diego trip.
“I’m ready, I’m ready!” The screen door clatters behind Van, snapping you away from memory lane. He sets his duffel bag down by your feet before heading back to the front door. He reaches under the welcome mat for the spare key before locking the door securely and tucking it back.
“Put it in the rock!” You call, slamming the trunk shut after you’ve loaded Van’s bag in with yours. But Van is already sliding into the driver’s seat, so that means you have to stomp up to the welcome mat, taking the key and reaching into the mulch by the front door for the hide-a-key rock you’d purchased for this purpose.
Van is probably rolling his eyes at you, but you can’t see through his sunglasses as you hop into the passenger seat. The car is sweltering, and Van immediately gets the air conditioning going while you get settled for the long ride ahead of you.
Leaving now, you shoot a text to Mary.
Theodore is literally showering, Mary responds with three eye-rolling emojis. But we’ll be out of here soon.
You send a laughing emoji in response as you two pull out of the gate.
Van makes a pit stop at a nearby gas station right before you two hit the highway so he can fill the gas tank while you go inside to collect the largest bottle of water they sell, two packs of cigarettes, a soft drink, and various snacks to hold you two over.
Traffic is light when you two finally get going, Van easily zooming towards San Diego as the early-afternoon sun blazes down on the cement, guiding your way.
“It’s gonna be so weird to be back,” You grin, Van turning the radio down so he can hear what you’re saying.
“Christ, I know,” Van’s beaming too, his hand straying from the steering wheel to intertwine his fingers with yours. You give them an excited squeeze.
“What were you doing alone at that bar, anyway?” You decide to ask while you’re lost in nostalgia.
“I wasn’t alone!” Van chuckles. “I was having drinks with Bond, but he decided to call it a night and I wanted to finish my drink.”
“Wait, you were with Bondy?” You grin, shifting in your seat to give him your full attention, eager for more details. “Was Bondy with you when we sat down?”
“We came in after you,” Van tells you. “We weren’t getting anything to eat so they seated us straight at the bar.”
“And then he left?”
“Yeah. We had a couple’a drinks and then he left, and I was finishing my beer.”
It’s so strange to think of the way every single person around you is running on their own timeline. Every single person at that bar had their own reasons for going, their own company (or lack thereof). It’s strange that so many people can coincidentally gather in the same place, whether it’s for a burger after a long drive or a beer after putting on a show at the House of Blues.
“But when Mary said you were looking at… us, she said you were alone,” You point out, hesitating over the word us. You really had no idea if it was you that Van had been staring at. Secretly you had a suspicion sometimes that he was actually staring at Mary.
“Well, yeah. Bond was gone, I was sort of just looking around.”
“But we stayed for, like, two hours after our food was gone. So you finished one beer for two hours?”
At this Van snorts. “No, I wasn’t drinking one beer for two fucking hours.”
“Gimme these,” You murmur, leaning forward to steal his sunglasses off of his face, annoyed that he was able to hide his expression behind them. You use them to push the hair out of your face.
“What’d you do that for?” He pouts, gesturing to the road. “It’s so fucking bright out!”
“The sun’s not even in your face!” You argue. “And anyway, what were you doing if you weren’t finishing one beer for two hours?”
Van sighs in exasperation. “Well, I was finishing my beer, and we caught each other’s eye, didn’t we? So I couldn’t exactly leave, could I?”
“When did we catch each other’s eye?” You cry incredulously. “Mary said you were staring at me!”
“I thought you had looked over at me! I kept seeing you grab drinks at the bar and I felt like we were noticing each other, I dunno. And then I saw you whispering with Mary, and she was staring at me dead-on, so I knew you were talking about me. So at that point I thought eh, I’ll stick around for a sec.”
You chew the inside of your cheek, trying to hide your pleased smile. “And then what?”
“You walked to the bathroom.” Van’s voice has an edge of hesitation in it, like he’s reluctant to reveal his side of the events. “And got about three inches away from me, and we made eye contact again, so, I dunno. I thought we were on the same page.”
“And then you stalked me back to the hotel?” You ask, your eyes widening. Your theory had been right all along!
“No!” Van cries, looking over at you with his brows furrowed. “No, I didn’t stalk you! What the fuck are you talking about?”
“You stayed until the bar closed! And then we walked back to the same hotel!”
“When you sat down again you walked the most roundabout way around me! So I accepted we weren’t on the same wavelength, and ordered my last drink and then I was ready to call it a night. But then it was last call.” He glares at you from the driver’s seat. “Everyone had to leave. It had nothing to do with you!”
“Yeah, okay,” You groan in surrender, your stalking theory finally laid to rest.
“And that’s it.” Van shrugs one shoulder. “I saw you guys head inside the hotel, I went around to have a smoke before I headed up to bed. Then Theo suddenly comes around, and the rest is history, I guess.”
You think over his version of events, still worrying the inside of your cheek. “Huh,” You say finally. “I sort of thought you were staring at Mary and just settled for me.”
“What?” Van shakes his head. “First of all, it’s very clear wherever they go that Mary and Theo are with each other. Second of all, I thought you were proper fit from the get-go.”
“Proper fit,” You mock him, reaching down by your feet for your pack of cigarettes. “As if. I’m ugly,” You say as you crack your window and light a cigarette.
Van rolls his eyes. “So fit I couldn’t even keep it in my pants.”
“You really couldn’t,” You agree. Knowing Van’s sexual history now, a spur-of-the-moment one night stand had actually been very out of character for him. “But I guess I decided to be some sort of impulsive, sexually empowered alter ego that night, so who am I to talk.”
Van tips his head back briefly to let out a loud laugh. “I really can’t believe you’d never had a one night stand. I would’ve never guessed.”
“My first and only,” You say in exaggerated sweetness, reaching over with the hand not holding your cigarette to pinch him lightly where his dimple is poking through on his cheek.
Van shrugs your arm away with a laugh, switching lanes to rush past someone who was actually going to speed limit.
You’re still gazing at his face, your whole body warm with love. “I love you,” You tell him. Just because you can. Just because it’s not a secret anymore.
“I love you,” Van responds instinctually, like it’s the easiest thing in the world for him to put into words. His words still send the butterflies in your stomach into a tiff. You don’t know if you’ll ever get used to hearing them.
“Oh, I forgot to tell you,” Van breaks your dreamy trance, peeking over at you quickly. “In the email they said they wanted to push Arizona as the first single.”
“No way,” You grin, trying to imagine how the song might fit with the current music Van’s alternative radio stations are always spinning. You still avoid listening to them, much more inclined to switch on the Taylor Swift album you keep stashed in the CD player when you drive. But then again, Catfish has never bothered with radio trends, so you suppose it didn’t matter.
“What do you think?” You press when he doesn’t respond.
Van shrugs. “I think it’s a great single. Me and Benj really rooted for it. Just wondering how you feel about it.”
There’s an edge of unease in his voice, and you suspect it’s because of all of the personal details in the song. While Van clearly didn’t mind airing out his every thought and emotion to the public, he’s known you long enough now to know that’s not the case for you.
You stay quiet, mentally running through the song in your mind. You peer out the window, watching the highway rush past in a blur, remembering that ride to Phoenix. Van had encapsulated it in stunning detail, from the conversation where you two exposed your deepest regrets to the strange sight of rain in the desert, the chill in the air from the pounding rain and the way you two had intimately warmed up.
“I think it sums up the album perfectly,” You tell him finally, giving him a bright smile. Van’s raw, blistering storytelling mixed with the upbeat, summery melody seemed like the perfect synopsis of what listeners should expect of The Summer.
And if a few details about your deepest secrets and sex life were broadcast around the world? Well, you suppose you’ll have to get used to it, because if this thing with Van plays out the way you’re hoping then he’ll be writing about you for a long, long time.
“I think so too,” Van nods, the tension dropping out of his shoulders. He turns the radio back up, settling back into his seat to focus on driving again.
You go back to looking out of the window, watching the buildings bordering the highway melt into each other, the other cars on the road radiating heatwaves. You’re still stuck on memories of the Phoenix trip, remembering that moment of realization that you were in love with Van. With the conversation you two had had on the way, and seeing Van be so sweet to Charlie, in hindsight you realize you never stood a chance.
Are you happy? You distinctly remember Van asking, and how you’d scrambled for an answer, realizing too late that you weren’t sure.
But now there was no question. Only the steady, content happiness that felt like it was always glowing around you. Of course shit in your life still went wrong, but now at the end of the day you got to cry about a work blunder in the arms of the person you loved the most. You’d be working remotely soon, free to visit your family whenever your heart desired, and you’d also be getting to travel. Not to mention the pay raise, and the fact you could devote a lot more of your income to your savings and paying off your student loans now that you lived with Van. Even your friend circle had expanded; you were closer than ever with the girls at work, and along with Van your circle had expanded to include the rest of the boys. The band also had a Newcastle tour date scheduled in the summer, and Bondy hasn’t been able to stop talking about the night out you were all going to have with Sam and his band.
“I love you,” You blurt out again, fluttery with that feeling that everything in your life was going oh so right.
“Christ, I love you too,” Van snorts, poking your thigh playfully.
“How fast are you going?” You ask as you realize he’s passing every car around you two at lightning speed.
“Don’t worry about it. I’m trying to get to the hotel before everyone else so I can get some time alone with you,” He grins, stealing his sunglasses out of your hair so he can pull them over his eyes again.
You accept his excuse. “Okay, well in that case I’m gonna take a nap.” You finish up your cigarette, rolling your window up before you reach for Van’s sweatshirt that he’d tossed in the back seat, pulling it on before you slump down in your seat, trying to get comfortable. “Don’t crash,” You warn him, closing your eyes. The sun coming through the car windows makes the inside of your eyelids a bright orange.
“I’ll try not to.”

Summer’s a Knife - Chapter 3
Catch up on Chapter 2 here
“Yes!” Van seems just as swept up in the excitement as you. He flops back against the cushions of the couch, his guitar resting against his belly as he kicks his long legs out and fist pumps the air in some inebriated celebration.
“I was starting to think you’d never even checked us out,” Van says as you settle back into your seat.
“I have!” You argue. “I’m high right now! It’s your fault you didn’t want to quiz me when I was sober!”
You can tell you’ve made a good point when Bondy lets out a deep belly laugh.
or
Van would like to hang out after work (and he’s got a proposition for you)
Word count: ~6k
Chapter Three
April 2019
You and Van share the occasional text after your date. He usually has gaps in his response time, but that doesn’t stop you from sending a few memes about the Netflix show you’d watched. To your relief, despite his usual practice of texting without any abbreviations he does use the laughing emoji.
On Wednesday, while you’re error-checking your coworker’s weekly work and fuming about it, your phone vibrates against your desk. Van’s texted you first.
Was supposed to be in the studio all day but got the day off. Wanna get some pizza and start the next episode? x
You feel your stomach physically clench in disappointment at the fact you’re here- in a fluorescent-lit office pulling most of your team’s weight on the new project- when instead you could be at Van’s.
It pains you to respond: I’m at work :(
Van sends back almost immediately: When are you off
You glance up at your computer. It’s one in the afternoon. Van’s probably going to be busy when you’re done here.
5, you tell him. If you were hanging out with Mary you’d probably be dramatically dry-heaving to demonstrate your grief at this missed opportunity. But considering you’re in your cubicle, you just clench your jaw in agony. When your phone vibrates again you want to throw it across the room in preparation for Van rainchecking.
See you after?
Your jaw almost drops at the unexpected response. Sure!, you send back, your heart fluttering. Just like that your bad mood evaporates, replaced instead by bubbling excitement for 5 o’clock. You immediately open up your thread with Mary and fill her in, unable to stop yourself from grinning.
You arrange to head over after work, Van texting over his address.
The code for the gate is 010892, He sends in a separate message. Another bubble underneath: Might take a few tries the 8 sticks
\\
You manage to slip out of the office at 4:30, your commute home shortened considerably by missing 5 o’clock traffic. You change out of your work clothes and into a t-shirt and leggings in full preparation to veg out on Van’s couch before throwing a few essentials into your bag, getting back into the car, and zipping to the address he’s sent.
Driving through a gated community is strange. You definitely feel like you don’t belong. Like every single neighbor realizes they don’t recognize your car, a sore thumb compared to the Teslas in the driveways. You’re tense over the possibility of some neighborhood vigilante confronting you, especially when you finally reach Van’s house.
For some reason it feels oddly intrusive to be using Van’s gate code. That feels like something reserved for family and friends. Not people he’s only hung out with twice.
Thinking about Van’s friend group makes you mull over your own label with him, as you’ve been starting to do. This thing between you two didn’t seem like it was headed for a relationship, considering Van’s erratic travelling, but could you call yourself friends? Friends with benefits, maybe? Or benefits that are forming a friendship?
True to Van’s word the 8 sticks, taking you a few frustrating tries to get it right before the gate swings open. You zoom through, anxious about how quick the gates close, only to see them moving at a snail’s pace as you head up the bamboo-lined driveway.
There’s another car parked outside of the garage next to the range rover. It’s a shiny red convertible, top down, looking vintage and well taken care of. You’re not good with cars, but you can definitely recognize the mustang emblems on the exterior. Picturing Van taking a joyride in it makes you smile to yourself as you head up to the front door.
You give a few taps on the glass door.
“Come in!” You hear Van boom from the other side.
You shuffle inside, preoccupied with slipping your shoes off and setting your keys down. “Hey,” You greet him.
“Hello,” A voice that isn’t Van’s greets you, and you jerk your head up in surprise.
Van’s taking an inhale from his cigarette, giving you a hey as he exhales. There’s another man on the couch, the bandmate that always wears the hat, and for a few sickening moments you’ve forgotten his name before it clicks into place: Bondy.
“You scared me!” You try to laugh off the way you’d been so startled, knowing there was no way the boys didn’t notice. Your mind is going a mile a minute, anxious at meeting someone Van’s so close to yet determined to keep your cool and impress him.
“What are you guys doing?” You ask, finally done getting situated at the door and heading over to them. They’re sprawled out on the sectional, both with acoustic guitars settled on their laps, and there’s an electric one leaning against the coffee table. There’s a beer bottle within arms reach of each of them, and cigarettes burning in an ashtray.
“Trying to rehearse,” Van mutters, absentmindedly strumming a few chords. “We’ve got an acoustic performance when we head back to London and we want to do somethin’ off of the new album. Just can’t decide what.”
You hum in understanding.
Van looks up from his guitar suddenly. “I’m being rude as fuck,” He laughs, “This is Bond, by the way,” Van gestures between you two. “Y/N, Bond, Bond, Y/N.”
“Hi,” You greet Bondy awkwardly. He reaches out to shake your hand and you return the gesture, smiling at him. “I’ve heard a lot about you.”
Bondy laughs around his cigarette. “Hopefully nothing too bad.”
“Not too bad,” You joke. “Just about how talented you are.”
Bondy snorts. He grips the neck of his guitar, making a gesture almost as if he was offering it to you. “Do you play?”
“Oh, no.” You shake your head. “I’ve got absolutely zero musical talent. Absolutely none.”
Bondy shrugs your self-depreciation off. “Practice s’all it takes,” He tells you.
“Yeah, and a guitar,” You laugh. “Don’t suppose you have one of those lying around.”
“I do, actually. I can bring one around next time if you wanna mess around with it.”
You blanch at his unexpected kindness. “You don’t have to do that,” You tell him sternly.
Bondy only shrugs, twinging different strings as he messes with the knobs on his guitar.
“I’m gonna go grab something to drink,” You say suddenly, eager for a reason to stop standing there awkwardly. “Do you guys want something?”
Bondy lifts his beer bottle. “Another one of these, please.”
“Me too,” Van quips.
You head for the kitchen, relieved to be away from their gazes in a different room. You try to take some steadying breaths to calm your nerves as you peruse Van’s fridge, freshly stocked with groceries this time. You decide on your usual can of Coke, taking your sweet time opening it and taking the first sip, procrastinating heading back in there.
Although it’s extremely nerve-wracking to meet one of Van’s bandmates, it has to mean something, doesn’t it? You suppose it’s better than him being hell-bent on keeping you as some hidden secret, unbeknownst to any of his friends or family. The only problem is you’re unprepared, dressed down with barely any makeup on. You’d have put more effort into looking like less of a slob if you’d known.
You head back in the room, cold beers wedged in the crook of your elbow.
“I see you got groceries,” You say to Van as you hand him his bottle.
“Can’t take credit for that,” Van laughs, “It was all on an app. Had it delivered and everything.”
“Sounds amazing,” You sigh, thinking dreamily into the future when the service fees might be bearable enough for you to do the same.
“You’re losing touch with reality,” Bondy jokingly snarls. He uses his hand wrapped in the fabric of his shirt to open his beer bottle. “Nothing keeps you humbled like a trip to Wal-Mart.”
“Do love a good trip to Wal-Mart,” Van agrees. He tips the neck of his beer to Bondy, and they cheer on that. You awkwardly sip your drink, trying not to feel excluded.
“Trips to Wal-Mart?”
You don’t even realize Bondy’s addressing you until he tacks on: “Yay or nay?”
You swallow the sip of your drink. “Yay,” You tell them. “Nothing better than a midnight shopping trip.”
“Bring it in,” Bondy says, pleased, offering you his beer to cheers on. Van joins, too. You smile, any feelings of exclusion simmering away.
As much as you’d be more comfortable sitting next to Van, with the way their guitars are taking up space the most logical place to sit is on the end of the L shape, which is closer to Bondy. You grab a throw blanket on your way, getting yourself situated and deciding to flip through your phone, leaving them to their business. The murmur quietly to themselves before Van gives three strums and the room erupts in a symphony of guitars.
They’re playing at full volume, unlike the hushed way your ex-girlfriend used to play when she was practicing in your old apartment with paper-thin walls. It’s impossible to even pretend you’re focused on anything else, opting to put your phone away and watch their living room performance.
Van’s voice catches you off guard. You’ve heard him sing, sure, and listened to a few Catfish tracks, but to hear his voice ring out in the small space gives you chills. He’s singing earnestly about someone who knows just how to tell me, how to get through tomorrow, ‘cause you know how it feels…
When the song’s done the room falls silent, an eerie feeling after all the noise. There’s a quick intermission while the boys sip their beers and take hits of their cigarettes before they start up again.
You don’t know what it is about this second song that makes you perk up. Maybe it’s the relentless strumming of the guitars before they break into a quieter melody, Van’s voice taking the spotlight as he starts the first verse with a sort of conversational I s’pose your life goes the way that it goes.
It almost sounds like he’s just having conversation with you and Bondy as he continues, pleading to the mysterious subject of the song once you’re done come get us, there’s always something I can do, before he amps up to full volume, closing his eyes as he gets lost in the chorus: Trust me, when we get it right…
The song continues in the same undulating pattern, louder choruses with heavier guitar peppered with hushed, conversational verses. Your eyes flit between Van’s face and the way Bondy’s fingers move instinctually, making the guitar solos look easy. The cherry on top comes when Van stops playing, his guitar dropping out in favor of Bondy keeping the time quietly as Van pleads take over my whole week, ‘cause I’m only here playing up so that I can come and fall at your feet.
When the song’s finished you feel breathless and invigorated.
“Which one did you like better?” Van asks you after him and Bondy exchange some quick notes over chords that go over your head.
“Hm?”
“Which one should we play? The first or second one?”
“Oh, fuck,” You can’t help but groan, “That’s not a decision I should make! Which one did you guys like playing better?”
“Bullshit,” Van laughs. “I’m asking you.”
You look between them with baited breath. Van wasn’t gonna let you get out of answering. The best you could hope for was that your answer didn’t upset someone.
“Honestly…” You draw your answer out. “The second one.”
Van seems pleased. “Encore it is!”
Bondy seems happy with the decision, too. “I’m surprised how strong it sounded acoustic.”
Van’s eyebrows raise, unable to answer as he’s taking a drink. He gestures in agreement with the hand not holding the bottle to his mouth.
“Me too, me too,” He says, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand.
“It’ll give everyone another taste of the album before it’s out,” Bondy points out, Van agreeing vigorously again.
With the song decided on, their informal rehearsal dies down. They still converse about London, and everything they’ve got planned, but their guitars are shuffled off to the side. Van heads for the kitchen, leaving you and Bondy alone.
Before there’s any chance for small talk Van rounds the corner again, a tray of weed in his hands.
He takes up his spot on the couch again, and you watch while he diligently rolls a blunt.
“I put a lot in here,” He admits, holding it up for Bondy’s approval. “Just for you, John.”
Bondy cackles. “Looks good. Light it.”
Van takes the first hit. There’s something attractive about how focused he gets, holding the smoke in his lungs for more than a few beats before he tips his head back, letting it all go in a slow exhale. He coughs a few times, and his eyes dart to yours when he leans forward for his beer.
Bondy’s next. When he’s done he holds the blunt out to you in offering.
“Y/N?” He offers around a few coughs.
You take it from him, your fingers brushing against each other clumsily. Van watches you carefully as you take a hit, aiming to mimic Van with how much you inhale, but not able to hold your breath as long as he could. The smoke tickles your throat and leaves your mouth in jagged coughs. Van passes you his beer. You accept it gratefully.
You pass the weed off to Van, the same routine repeating. You call it quits after your second hit, but the boys pass it between themselves for a little longer.
Although it had seemed the guitars were forgotten, you’re not surprised that Van’s ends up in his lap again. He plays a mish-mash of melodies you don’t recognize, giggling about them with Bondy as you melt into the couch in your haze.
“Do you know this one?” Van asks you, quietly strumming a verse.
“No,” You say, frowning.
“Okay.” Van’s eyebrows furrow in deep concentration before he plays another. “This one?” He repeats it for you.
You laugh, shrugging. “Nope.”
“Jesus Christ,” Van whistles, shaking his head in exasperation. Bondy laughs.
“You gotta know this one,” Van insists, before launching into another tune. He opts to play the whole song for you, his eyes meeting yours hopefully while he plays.
You’re so caught up in watching him, marveling at how effortless he makes playing look even as his fingers flit across the neck of the guitar in complicated patterns. He alternates between closing his eyes, drifting off into whatever he’s playing, and watching you closely for any sign of recognition.
“So…” He trails off when he’s done.
You’d hardly even listened to what he was playing. The music was stunning, but the view had been better.
“Um…” You laugh nervously. You genuinely search your foggy brain for something to match the sounds, not wanting to let Van down.
Van replays the chorus, and finally it clicks.
“Wait…” You say suddenly, sitting up. “Is that one of yours?”
“Yes,” Van encourages you, continuing to play.
Even Bondy’s perked up, both of them excited at the prospect of you getting it right. The melody echoes in your head, distant and unable to be fully grasped, before you hear it transform into electric guitar.
“Kathleen!” You shout, so caught up in your excitement you leap out of your seat. “It’s Kathleen!”
“I should get going,” He says after checking his phone. He takes a long time getting up, sluggish from the weed.
“I’ll see you tomorrow,” Van says as Bondy collects one of the acoustic guitars, procuring a case from behind the couch and packing it up carefully.
“See you tomorrow, lad,” Bondy yawns, giving you a wave as he heads out. “It was lovely meeting you,” He tells you.
“Nice meeting you,” You give him a small wave back. “And getting to hear you play.”
“Liar,” Bondy jokes as he stops at the door to get his shoes on. “Let me know if you want me to bring that guitar around, okay?”
“I will,” You assure him, twisted so you’re looking at him from over the back of the couch.
“Have a good day off!” Are his final words, directed at Van, before he leaves.
You can hear the sound of a car door closing, and the rev of an engine before the realization hits you. “Was that Mustang his?”
Van rolls his eyes. “Yeah, don’t bring it up in front of him. It’s his baby. He’ll waffle on for hours.”
“He’s really nice,” You say, wrapping Van’s throw blanket tighter around you, snuggling further into the couch.
Van’s body looks limp, draped across the couch, his guitar set aside again. He blinks at you for a moment before he responds. “Yeah, he’s ace. He likes you, too.”
“Really? How can you tell?”
“He offered you a guitar,” Van snickers, heaving himself up into a sitting position, reaching for his phone on the coffee table. “Cares about his guitars more than the Mustang.”
“No way.” You mull over Van’s words. You can’t help but feel pleased with yourself.
“You ready for some pizza?” Van changes the topic, engrossed in his phone. “Dunno about you, but I’m starved.”
“So ready for pizza. I’ve got the munchies bad.”
There’s a bit of a discrepancy between toppings, forcing you two to decide to split the pizza in half, but Van places the order on his app with minimal fuss, and you two settle in to wait for it to arrive.
The spot next to Van on the couch has opened up in Bondy’s absence, and you slip into it when you return from using the bathroom.
You decide to lay back, sprawling your legs across Van’s lap and stretching out. You grab a pillow, stuffing it under your neck.
It’s not something you’d usually do, but the weed relaxes you to the point where you don’t care. Van rests his hand on your leg above your knee, warm through your leggings, and you take that as a sign he’s unbothered.
“What do you do here?” You ask suddenly. Your question catches Van off guard. He sets his phone aside.
His brows furrow. “Work. Meetings, writing, recording.”
“But besides that,” You press. “Like, do you go to the beach?”
Van snorts. “Look at me.” He pushes up the sleeve of his button up further up his forearm, showing you how pale it is. “Do I look like I belong on a beach?”
Your eyes widen. “Are you saying you’ve never been to the beach?”
“No! Of course I’ve been to the beach!” Van laughs. “But not regularly!”
“So what do you do?” You exclaim, folding your arms behind your head. “Do you have a dog that you like, take to the dog park or something?”
“I do have a dog, yeah,” Van nods. “I’ve just been keeping her completely secret from you. Hiding her in the other wing of the house.”
Despite his deadpan delivery, you can see the amusement glittering in his eyes.
“Shut the fuck up,” You huff, lifting one of your legs so you could nudge him with one of your socked feet. Van bursts into laughter.
“Do you party?” You continue your interrogation, wiggling your toes where they’re pressed into Van’s ribs. Van wriggles away.
You gasp. “Are you ticklish?” You squeal, attempting to prod at his ribs with your toes again. Van cringes away.
“Yeah, yeah,” He groans, swatting at your foot. “Quit,” He begs.
You let your legs come to rest in his lap again. “So is partying your thing?”
Van groans. “Did Bond put you up to this?”
Your eyebrows furrow as you try to decipher what he’s talking about. “Huh?”
Van sees your confusion and chuckles. “He’s bugging me to go to a party this weekend.”
“Oh,” You understand suddenly. “No, I was genuinely asking! Because you said you were free most nights.”
“I like a drink with the lads,” Van explains, “But I’m not one for parties.”
“Ugh, me either.” You let your head fall back so you’re staring at the ceiling.
When Van doesn’t respond, you crane your neck to look at him. He’s smiling down at you.
“What?” You ask him.
“I’ll go if you go.”
“To a party? Ew, no!”
“Oh come on,” Van pleads, “What do you do in your free time?”
“I don’t have free time.” You stretch your arm out, poking Van in the nose with your pointer finger. “I have a job.”
“Me too!” Van argues.
“Yeah, and parties are a part of it!” You point out. “You have to, like, schmooze with record people!”
“Schmooze,” Van parrots back to you, beaming. “You’re so fucking funny. Schmooze. That’s why I need you to go with me!”
“It’s not even a schmooze type of party,” Van continues to plead his case. “This isn’t some fancy label thing or whatever. It’s genuinely just a party John’s friend is throwing.”
Learning it’s not some black-tie and champagne extravaganza makes you fall silent. Van can see he’s got you considering, and continues to plead.
“It’s just a house party. Honest.”
You wriggle up from your lying position until you’re sitting up, legs still resting on Van’s. You narrow your eyes at him.
“I don’t get it, though,” You cross your arms over your chest, “Why do I need to go to your friend’s party?”
“He’s not my friend, that’s the thing,” Van explains. He’s distracted momentarily, drumming his pointer fingers against your shins as if he’s playing the drums to some silent song. “Bond’s gonna be around his friends, and Blakes just ends up wandering off. So I’ll be sitting there bored as shit.”
“As if you’re ever sitting around at a party,” You scoff, “Everybody likes you!”
Van shrugs. “I can hold a conversation with anyone, but that doesn’t mean I want to. S’a lot easier to bring your own mate. You don’t know anyone, I don’t know anyone…”
He trails off, silently begging you with his eyes. You roll yours.
“When is this thing, anyway?”
“Saturday,” Van perks up at your question.
You wipe your hands over your face, dread growing in the pit of your stomach as you’ve made your decision. “Okay,” You say into your palms.
“Class,” Van says, smug. He rests his hands on your legs, shaking them gently. “It’ll be fun!”
“It will not,” You pout, finally pulling your hands away from your face.
“It’ll be fun in the sense that we’ll be miserable together.”
“Hopefully,” You sigh.
Eventually the food arrives, and you and Van take heaping portions of pizza and breadsticks, opting to eat in the living room so you can watch Netflix at the same time.
Almost immediately after Van starts up the episode the plot sucks all of your attention into the screen, and it only takes one second for you to misjudge the way your hand is distractedly bringing the slice of pizza to your mouth for it to topple, landing cheese down on your lap.
“Shit,” You hiss, the heat burning your skin through your leggings. You pick up the slice, but the cheese and sauce stay gooped together, sliding down your thigh and onto Van’s couch, burning you the whole way down.
“Pause, pause,” You say hurriedly, Van confused as you jump up. “Oh shit, it’s all over the couch, I’m so sorry,” You start to apologize profusely, stripping off your leggings. “Ow, ow.”
“I’ll clean it, I’ve got it,” You assure Van, who has set his plate aside on the coffee table in favor of standing up to help you.
“It’s fine,” Van assures you. He follows you into the kitchen, where you run the part of your leggings covered in pizza sauce under the tap. He grabs for the paper towel, returning to the living room.
Once the fabric is sufficiently cleaned off and wrung out you head back into the living room, where Van’s using paper towel to wipe the mess away and dry the cushion.
“Sorry,” You repeat for the millionth time.
Van shrugs. “It’s nothin’. Done a lot worse.” He gathers up the wad of used paper towels. “See? All clean.”
You peer over the back of the couch, where the only evidence of your mishap is a slightly darker patch on the seat. You feel your shoulders sag in relief.
When Van comes back from throwing the wad away, you hold up your wet leggings. “Could I borrow a pair of pants?”
Van nods. “I’ll go grab you some. Sit down and grab yourself another slice.” One of the corners of his lips quirk up, and you smile, the humor of the situation finally coming through.
When Van comes down the staircase holding a pair of pants for you, he’s traded his signature button-up and dark jeans for a black hoodie and a pair of baggy, gray sweatpants that look well-worn. He’s no longer in the shoes he hadn’t bothered to change out of after the studio, approaching you barefoot.
“Here,” He hands over a bundle of fabric that you shake out. It’s a pair of red plaid pajama pants, soft and faded. They look like they’ll fit you.
“Thanks,” You murmur, sliding them on. It feels heavenly to be in something that isn’t skin-tight.
“Ready to try this again?” Van laughs, settling back into his seat. You laugh and nod, your residual embarrassment still causing a blush to cross your cheeks.
\\
Once you’ve finished off your meal you push your plate away from you on the coffee table, extra careful to make sure it’s far enough away from the edge that there’s no chance of another embarrassing spill.
The food warms you up from the inside out, partnering with the weed to make your whole body feel heavy. Van’s still sitting upright, engrossed in the show, empty plate resting on his lap. You fold your legs up onto the couch, slouching to the side, letting your cheek press into Van’s shoulder through his hoodie.
“What’re you doing?” Van laughs, twisting to look down at you.
You sit upright again, embarrassed at the line you’ve apparently crossed.
Before you can formulate some sort of explanation Van picks up his plate, opting to set it gingerly on the ground.
“Gonna get a kink in your neck,” He tells you, settling back against the cushions, legs stretched out in front of him. He holds his arm up, a silent invitation for you to curl up against him.
You lay down, letting your head come to rest in his lap.
“You’re gonna fall asleep like that,” He pouts, his hand coming to rest on your shoulder. The slight weight of it pressing into your skin is comforting. It’s the closest you’ve been to cuddling someone in forever.
“Am not,” You mumble. “Weed just makes my head feel heavy.” You fight to stifle a yawn, but you can tell Van’s heard by his snort.
\\
The next thing you’re aware of is the sickening twist in your stomach, your body jerking into a sitting position.
It takes you some time to reorient to your surroundings, your brain clamoring to pick up the pieces of where you are and what’s going on. It comes together slowly, the memory of your hazy evening with Van assembling in your mind’s eye as you look around at the dark living room. There’s no light in the room. The T.V. is off. Your eyes adjust slowly, able to make out fuzzy shapes among the shades of dark blue from the night sky leaking in through the windows.
You’re not in Van’s lap anymore, although that’s the last thing you remember. There’s a decorative pillow haphazardly stuffed in the crack of the couch where your head had been resting, and the blanket you’d been laying with is in a wrinkled heap on the rug.
Soft snores alert you to Van’s presence before your eyes can make him out. He’s a dark lump in the spot next to you, swallowed up by his black hoodie. The longer you stare the clearer his silhouette becomes, your eyes able to make out the light gray of his pants, the shape of his feet hanging off the edge of the couch, the sharp line of his nose peeking out from under his hood.
Eventually you get up from your seat, tiptoeing over to the lamp that’s perched on an end table that Van usually has switched on, groping for the knob before the sofa is bathed in soft light. It’s instantly calming just to have the ability to see, even as you internally panic over the time.
Van doesn’t stir when you sit down again. For some reason you feel compelled to stare, as creepy as it feels. You’ve never been one to do that cheesy rom-com cliche of admiring someone while they sleep, but with Van you can’t help it.
You’ve never seen him sit so still, or be so quiet. In his every waking moment he’s a white noise machine; whether it’s humming, singing, drumming on any surface he can reach, or the noise of his shoes tapping against the floor or his drawn out sighs as he exhales cigarette smoke. Even in his sleep he faithfully produces background noise with his snoring.
It’s only with the snoring revelation that you realize why you’re so intrigued, your eyes widening as you take in your current view: Van was sleeping.
Van. Sleeping. The same Van that barely even let out a yawn at 4 A.M. in San Diego after having completed a full set and had a night out. The same Van that had woken up before you at every opportunity. The Van that was the living, breathing definition of hyper was curled up on the couch, unconscious.
As much as the view jarred you, and you wished you had more time to process it, a click of your phone revealed it was past midnight. You poke at Van gently, trying to rouse him.
“Hey,” You whisper, the sound way too loud in the quiet room. “Van.”
He comes to slowly. The first movement he makes is to tug down the hem of his hoodie, which had ridden up and exposed his belly. You give his shoulder a little shake, hoping to keep him coming to the surface, but when he falls still again and a snore escapes his parted lips you sigh.
“Van,” You try again, a little louder. “Hey, wake up.”
He’s got his hood pulled over his hair, which successfully shades his eyes from the light. You’re hesitant to fold the fabric back, but do so when it doesn’t seem like he’s waking up at all.
“Va-an,” You singsong, ruffling his hair, pushing it away from his face. He scrunches his nose in response.
“We accidentally fell asleep,” You tell him. “It’s midnight. I gotta go home.”
There’s an incoherent murmur in response.
“Hm?”
“No sense in going home,” Van mumbles, now rubbing his eyes.
“I didn’t bring anything to stay over,” You say.
Van blinks his eyes open then. They’re bloodshot as he peers up at you, a sleepy smirk forming over his lips.
“Bet you’ve got a contact case with you.”
You roll your eyes. “I’ve always got one.”
“But it’s got the liquid in it, doesn’t it?”
You don’t justify him with a response. “C’mon, get up,” You say instead, Van chuckling as you herd him upright and off of the couch.
“I’ve got work tomorrow,” You tell him as you two take the steps slowly, still sleepy and out of it.
“Me too,” Van yawns from the step above you.
“I’m gonna be up early,” You warn him.
Van yawns again. “Get me up, too. There’s stuff I wanna work on before I head to the studio.”
You’re instantly curious, but too exhausted to voice it. You two are silent the rest of the way up to his bedroom.
The first thing Van does once he’s in his room is sit down on his edge of the bed and reach for his cigarettes.
“Ah, fuck,” He groans, wiping at his face with one hand while the other holds his lit cigarette away from his mouth. “I’m fucking knackered.”
“Me too.” The smell of Van’s cigarette makes you crave one. “Can you pass me one of those?”
Van passes you his cigarette and lighter. With your first inhale you instantly feel sleepier and calmer. The jitters of waking up somewhere different had given you a quick shot of adrenaline, but now it was starting to fade away. You smoke your cigarette quickly while you use the bathroom, resting it delicately on the edge of the sink so you can take your contacts out afterwards.
It’s not until you’re back in the room about to slip under the covers that you realize you haven’t taken your bra off. That leaves you with little choice except to do it in front of Van, who for once has opted not to be glued to his phone but is instead curled up under the blanket in his hoodie, watching you curiously.
“What?” You ask, self conscious under his gaze as your hands slip underneath the hem of your shirt, fiddling with the clasp.
“What’re ya doing?”
With some shimmying you procure your bra out from under your shirt. “Taking this off,” You quip, flinging it to the floor.
Van looks impressed, eyebrows raised, but doesn’t say anything. You get into bed, and once you’re settled Van clicks the lamp off, the room instantly going black. You try to get comfortable, listening to the rustle of the sheets as Van follows suit. There’s no light from Van’s phone screen lighting the room up, and it’s strange feeling wide awake when you were both yawning just moments ago.
You don’t know how long you lay there on your side, peering into the darkness at Van’s bedroom wall. It feels like forever, but you know that’s probably just your mind playing tricks on you. You can tell Van’s not asleep from the lack of snoring and the way he tosses and turns. It’s hard to tell if he’s having a hard time getting comfortable, or if you’re losing your train of thought in the gaps between his movements.
As time continues to slip by you start to feel tense. You’ve got to be up early for work, you’re not at home in your own bed, and the longer Van stays awake the more you mentally prepare yourself for the inevitable whispered suggestion that you two help each other out. But it just wasn’t happening for you tonight, and that only magnified your anxiety. You lay still for as long as you can take it, willing your body’s sleep response to kick in, but eventually you roll onto your back to get more comfortable, praying Van didn’t take your new position as an invitation.
In reality, you knew Van wouldn't give you an issue if hooking up wasn't something you were into tonight. He's never been the slightest bit pushy. But even so, you wouldn't blame him for expecting tonight to follow the same routine you two have so faithfully been etching into place.
You feel his weight shift, the blankets tugging as Van flips so that he's facing you. You feel the dread pool in your stomach and swallow hard, trying to mentally prepare yourself for his polite disappointment.
"You shivering?" He asks instead, the edges of his voice rough from exhaustion.
"Oh," You realize suddenly that you are, unsure if it's more from your nerves or the cold sheets. "Yeah."
"Do you want me to turn the heat up?"
"It's fine," You say quickly. "If you leave you'll let the warm air out."
It sounds vaguely like a pickup line. You cringe inwardly. Van just yawns.
“C’mere then,” He sniffles, opening his arms wide. It’s hard to understand what he wants you to do considering you can barely see, but you wiggle into the space between his outstretched arms, cozying up to his chest as he wraps his arms around you. His hoodie is soft and smells clean, and your nose is so close to his neck that you can smell the lingering scent of his cologne.
“Warmer?” Van asks. You hear his question more as a rumble through his chest than via his actual voice. You nod against him as he tugs the blankets more firmly around your bodies.
You lay there in a happy daze, floating closer and closer to sleep with each rise and fall of Van’s chest. Falling asleep against him on the couch was nice, but laying with him like this was heavenly. You wait to feel him get hard, to feel his palm rest against your waist or the hem of your shirt suggestively, but it never comes. In all fairness, however, his window of opportunity was small; it feels like you fall asleep almost instantly.
