Sump Pump : How to test | Professional Tips – Home Wiz Guy
Hey guys. Welcome to another new blog post from Home Wiz Guy. From the title you may got the idea what I am going to talk about. Yes my today’s topic is sump pump.
What is Sump Pump
So if you are not familiar with sump pump then let me explain you what it is. A sump pump is nothing but a pump which is used to remove the water accumulated in a water collecting sump basin. Sump Pump very commonly found in the basement or in crawl space of your home. It is installed below the floor so that the sump basin can easily collect the water.
How it work
Hope you understand what is a sump pump is. But another big question arise which is “How it works?”. The mechanism is very simple. The pump is equipped with a sensor that can sense the increasing water levels or the water pressure. When the water level gets too high or the water pressure is too much, then the pump starts automatically and pumps out the excess water out of the basement using a discharge pipe that may be connected to the drainage system of your basement of simply just lead the water outside of the home.
How to test a sump pump
Before testing your sump pump you need to inspect few things. First of all you need to check the discharge pipe is working fine. Make sure that there is no blockage in the discharge pipe or in the drainage system.
Also make sure there is no debris inside the pump. If there is debris inside the pump please remove that or it will clog your pump.
There are 2 way to test your sump pump.
First Step: At the time of installation may be professionals were setup your sump pump and they plugged all the plugs to their right position. So at first you need to unplug the power plugs. If you take a look at the outlet where you sump pump is plugged in, you can see that there are 2 separate plugs. One plug is for the float switch and the other one is for the motor. So you need to unplug both of them. After unplugging those you need to plug the motor plug. If your pump is ok then imminently your pump’s motor will start. If not then you need to replace your pump. So if every thing is ok then you need to put all the plugs in right order as they were before.
Second Step: For this step you need around 20 liters of water. You need to fill your sump pit with those water. It will raise the float until the pump starts. If the pump starts then it will pump out all the water through the discharge pipe or the drainage system. If not then you need to replace your pump.
You can do this without water. All you need to do is you need to lift the float the top with your hand. It will trigger the pump if the pump is ok. But it will not fulfill the main purpose of the testing. You can’t check if your discharge pipe or drainage system is ok or not. So I suggest you to use water. One more thing. If you are doing this dry test please don’t run your pump for more than few seconds. It will damage the pump’s motor.
Those 2 tests are simple but very much effective. Those tests can save your basement to be flooded. Monthly couple of minutes of test can save thousands of dollars.
Normally the lifespan of a sump pump is around 10 years. But if it is not maintained properly then it may needs to be replaced much earlier than regular lifetime.
Shout-Out
Now it is time for some shout-out of those professionals who are experts in this sump pump field.

WHY YOU SHOULD GET YOUR HOME’S ROOF INSPECTED AFTER A STORM
There have been thirteen named storms that hit the US in 2019. Each storm that occurs can cause some severe damage to a home’s roof. This is why it is always a good idea to get your roof inspected after big storms. Especially named storms, and even after every couple of smaller nameless storms. In this article, I will be going into finer detail as to why it is so important to have a roof inspection done after storms. I will also discuss what could happen to you and your roof if you neglect this aspect of proper roof maintenance.
1. Let’s start with the difference between a named and nameless storm. The difference is related to insurance, as there are different deductibles and coverages for named storms then non-named storms. A named storm is always going to be a separate deductible and coverage than a nameless storm. The reason you need to have an inspector get up there and assess the damage after the storm is that you’ll need to be able to submit the claim with accurate information. It is important to read your policy and understand what you are getting yourself into when you go to file that claim.
2. Heavy wind and rain from a storm can do a lot of damage to your roof, and some of that damage may not be noticeable when it occurs. A small rip or puncture in your roof membrane and bam, over time, that small ding could let in water and moisture. That leak could lead to massive damage throughout your entire roofing system. The main culprit for this kind of damage to your roof is flying debris from the storm. Imagine a massive tree limb falls and puts a big hole in your roof. Think of something even less classic. Your neighbors kids little red wagon, that thing can catch a thirty-five mile an hour gust and slam into your roof. It could cause just enough damage to give you a major roofing issue in a couple of months if left unaddressed.
3. Heavy winds and rain often rip sealant and shingles from roofs. The last thing you want is to leave those two gaping holes in your roof only for the next storm to come through and dump a bucket of rain down your hole and fill your attics insulation up with water. That is no fun and could easily be avoided with a simple roof inspection.
4. Lastly, you are going to want to be mindful of your gutter system. Storms have a way of doing a number on these guys and whether it’s hail or just heavy wind and rain, if your gutter system is compromised you are asking for some major trouble. The problem with a malfunctioning gutter system is always two-fold. First, it does not drain properly, and this causes excess water to sit on your roof. The second way in which a compromised gutter system will damage your roof is if it is loaded with debris, it will eventually start to pull away from your home. The pressure of all the water going into it and having nowhere to go will create holes into the side of your roof for all kinds of things that should not be getting in there.
Hire a reputable company that will come to your house after each storm and makes sure your roof is still in fighting shape. The last thing you want is to wake up one Saturday morning after a particularly rough Friday night storm only to find you have a leak that is doing some serious damage from your roof. It’s not a fun way to start a Saturday, take it from me.
If you live in Asheville or Hendersonville, NC, and are due for a roof inspection, call Secure Restoration at 888- 245-9953 to schedule your next roof inspection today

STEPS OF THE WATER RESTORATION PROCESS
In the event of water damage in your home, the best thing to do is call a water damage restoration company. The first forty-eight hours of a water damage event are when most of the damage to your home will occur. The longer the water sits, the more extensive the cost to repair your home will be.
After you have called a water restoration company, when they arrive, they will proceed with the following four steps:
Assessing the extent of the water damage – this will consist of a walkthrough of the damaged area. Bordering areas to the affected area will also be inspected. The tricky part about water damage is that it can seep into neighboring regions and go unnoticed unless a trained expert investigates the area.
The water damage restoration company will then begin to remove the standing water. This process involves water extraction pumps and water vacuums that suck up the water. The water removal is often one of the most significant and most stressful parts of the job. As it’s a race against the clock, the longer the water sits, the more damage it is doing to the structure.
After all of the water has been removed, the next phase can begin. Drying the space and getting the humidity from all that standing water out. Through the application of industrial air movers and large fans, the area can begin drying and getting aired out. The fans and air movers circulate the air and dramatically expedite the drying and dehumidifying processes.
The final step is when the water damage removal company begins the actual restoration process. This process consists of removing the damaged carpets, drywall and sheetrock along with any other building materials that are waterlogged. This step is also the barometer for a successful restoration job. It will show whether or not the water damage restoration company was able to restore the space to its pre-water damage condition.
For even more information on water removal, check out our other water removal blog here. Are you searching for a water damage restoration company in Asheville, Black Mountain, or the Hendersonville, NC area? If so, contact Secure Restoration today. You can count on them for quick and effective service.
