Lilly’s commitment to Alzheimer’s extends beyond sponsorship
Beth Stafford, a Senior Executive Assistant at Eli Lilly and Company, said she is taking a personal, active role in the fight against Alzheimer’s and other dementias. That’s how she got involved with leading Team Lilly Eldercare Support Group, one of Lilly’s teams for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s.
Beth’s commitment is more than workplace philanthropy. She walks to honor both her mother and her aunt, persons living with Alzheimer’s disease. “Love and honor is what I was always taught,” Beth said.

Her mother Ann was diagnosed with dementia about six years ago. Ann lived with Beth for four and half years before moving to a nursing facility in January. The decision was difficult, yet Beth realized her mother’s dementia progressed and their well-trained, highly-skilled home aides could no longer provide the needed care.
“Mom started saying [abusive] things to them, and the final straw was when she pushed one of them,” Beth said. “That’s where I draw the line. The caregiver said these are the characteristics of the disease, but also [admitted] that we needed someone who’s better equipped to handle it.”
On the day of the move, Beth’s mother demonstrated significant behavior issues and refused to leave Beth’s house. Although Ann was noticeably distressed about the impending move, Beth still was taken aback by her mother’s fierce insistence on staying in her home.
“It was New Year’s Day. I didn’t know what to do, or who to call, since it was a holiday,” Beth recalled. “How do I get her there? Do I call the police? Do I call an ambulance?”
Beth called the Alzheimer’s Association Helpline, 800.272.3900, and spoke with a trained specialist who was able to help her feel calm and provide resource options. Ann now resides at The Wellington at Southport, and she will turn 92 in January. Beth’s aunt Reg resides at Miller’s Merry Manor in Tipton. Reg celebrates her 93rd birthday in October.
Beth said she knew to call the Alzheimer’s Association that day because she had received support from Association staff while her mother was living at her home. She remembers the comforting feeling she experience when she called the Helpline. “It was the first time I felt like I wasn’t crazy,” Beth said. “I’m an only child and used to having to do things alone. So often I was wondering whether what I was doing [for my mom] was wrong. But the Alzheimer’s Association has been such a huge resource.”
Now Beth serves as a resource for her colleagues, managing Lilly’s eldercare support group. The group, which has about 75 members, meets online via email discussion. She said she hopes to expand services and provide an in-person resource for employees with friends or loved ones with dementia.
As a Grand Champion status fundraiser for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, Beth also serves as a resource for Team Lilly Eldercare Support Group. Beth said she has taken advantage of the Alzheimer’s Association online tools for easy fundraising.
“It’s so easy to send out [Facebook] messages,” Beth said. “People I’ve never thought of [contacting] have donated, significantly. So many of us are so busy with being caregivers and working full-time, so these online resources are so helpful.”
“My army might not have many human bodies, but it’s not [small] in support. We’re few, but mighty!”
Lilly also offers a database called LifeCare, which provides a variety of resources – articles, webinars, and interactive tools – to Lilly employees. Employees also can access elder care services. Many of Beth’s coworkers have used the services and said they have been satisfied.
“At Lilly, we’re still continuing [medication] trials,” Beth said, “but it takes much more than that to fight this disease. It takes caregiving and education, too.”
