Google is (still) losing the spam wars to zombie news-brands
I'm touring my new, nationally bestselling novel The Bezzle! Catch me TONIGHT (May 3) in CALGARY, then TOMORROW (May 4) in VANCOUVER, then onto Tartu, Estonia, and beyond!
Even Google admits – grudgingly – that it is losing the spam wars. The explosive proliferation of botshit has supercharged the sleazy "search engine optimization" business, such that results to common queries are 50% Google ads to spam sites, and 50% links to spam sites that tricked Google into a high rank (without paying for an ad):
https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2024/03/core-update-spam-policies#site-reputation
It's nice that Google has finally stopped gaslighting the rest of us with claims that its search was still the same bedrock utility that so many of us relied upon as a key piece of internet infrastructure. This not only feels wildly wrong, it is empirically, provably false:
https://downloads.webis.de/publications/papers/bevendorff_2024a.pdf
Not only that, but we know why Google search sucks. Memos released as part of the DOJ's antitrust case against Google reveal that the company deliberately chose to worsen search quality to increase the number of queries you'd have to make (and the number of ads you'd have to see) to find a decent result:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/04/24/naming-names/#prabhakar-raghavan
Google's antitrust case turns on the idea that the company bought its way to dominance, spending the some of the billions it extracted from advertisers and publishers to buy the default position on every platform, so that no one ever tried another search engine, which meant that no one would invest in another search engine, either.
Google's tacit defense is that its monopoly billions only incidentally fund these kind of anticompetitive deals. Mostly, Google says, it uses its billions to build the greatest search engine, ad platform, mobile OS, etc that the public could dream of. Only a company as big as Google (says Google) can afford to fund the R&D and security to keep its platform useful for the rest of us.
That's the "monopolistic bargain" – let the monopolist become a dictator, and they will be a benevolent dictator. Shriven of "wasteful competition," the monopolist can split their profits with the public by funding public goods and the public interest.
Google has clearly reneged on that bargain. A company experiencing the dramatic security failures and declining quality should be pouring everything it has to righting the ship. Instead, Google repeatedly blew tens of billions of dollars on stock buybacks while doing mass layoffs:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/02/21/im-feeling-unlucky/#not-up-to-the-task
Those layoffs have now reached the company's "core" teams, even as its core services continue to decay:
https://qz.com/google-is-laying-off-hundreds-as-it-moves-core-jobs-abr-1851449528
(Google's antitrust trial was shrouded in secrecy, thanks to the judge's deference to the company's insistence on confidentiality. The case is moving along though, and warrants your continued attention:)
https://www.thebignewsletter.com/p/the-2-trillion-secret-trial-against
Google wormed its way into so many corners of our lives that its enshittification keeps erupting in odd places, like ordering takeout food:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/02/24/passive-income/#swiss-cheese-security
Back in February, Housefresh – a rigorous review site for home air purifiers – published a viral, damning account of how Google had allowed itself to be overrun by spammers who purport to provide reviews of air purifiers, but who do little to no testing and often employ AI chatbots to write automated garbage:
https://housefresh.com/david-vs-digital-goliaths/
In the months since, Housefresh's Gisele Navarro has continued to fight for the survival of her high-quality air purifier review site, and has received many tips from insiders at the spam-farms and Google, all of which she recounts in a followup essay:
https://housefresh.com/how-google-decimated-housefresh/
One of the worst offenders in spam wars is Dotdash Meredith, a content-farm that "publishes" multiple websites that recycle parts of each others' content in order to climb to the top search slots for lucrative product review spots, which can be monetized via affiliate links.
A Dotdash Meredith insider told Navarro that the company uses a tactic called "keyword swarming" to push high-quality independent sites off the top of Google and replace them with its own garbage reviews. When Dotdash Meredith finds an independent site that occupies the top results for a lucrative Google result, they "swarm a smaller site’s foothold on one or two articles by essentially publishing 10 articles [on the topic] and beefing up [Dotdash Meredith sites’] authority."
Dotdash Meredith has keyword swarmed a large number of topics. from air purifiers to slow cookers to posture correctors for back-pain:
https://housefresh.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/keyword-swarming-dotdash.jpg
The company isn't shy about this. Its own shareholder communications boast about it. What's more, it has competition.
Take Forbes, an actual news-site, which has a whole shadow-empire of web-pages reviewing products for puppies, dogs, kittens and cats, all of which link to high affiliate-fee-generating pet insurance products. These reviews are not good, but they are treasured by Google's algorithm, which views them as a part of Forbes's legitimate news-publishing operation and lets them draft on Forbes's authority.
This side-hustle for Forbes comes at a cost for the rest of us, though. The reviewers who actually put in the hard work to figure out which pet products are worth your money (and which ones are bad, defective or dangerous) are crowded off the front page of Google and eventually disappear, leaving behind nothing but semi-automated SEO garbage from Forbes:
https://twitter.com/ichbinGisele/status/1642481590524583936
There's a name for this: "site reputation abuse." That's when a site perverts its current – or past – practice of publishing high-quality materials to trick Google into giving the site a high ranking. Think of how Deadspin's private equity grifter owners turned it into a site full of casino affiliate spam:
https://www.404media.co/who-owns-deadspin-now-lineup-publishing/
The same thing happened to the venerable Money magazine:
https://moneygroup.pr/
Money is one of the many sites whose air purifier reviews Google gives preference to, despite the fact that they do no testing. According to Google, Money is also a reliable source of information on reprogramming your garage-door opener, buying a paint-sprayer, etc:
https://money.com/best-paint-sprayer/
All of this is made ten million times worse by AI, which can spray out superficially plausible botshit in superhuman quantities, letting spammers produce thousands of variations on their shitty reviews, flooding the zone with bullshit in classic Steve Bannon style:
https://escapecollective.com/commerce-content-is-breaking-product-reviews/
As Gizmodo, Sports Illustrated and USA Today have learned the hard way, AI can't write factual news pieces. But it can pump out bullshit written for the express purpose of drafting on the good work human journalists have done and tricking Google – the search engine 90% of us rely on – into upranking bullshit at the expense of high-quality information.
A variety of AI service bureaux have popped up to provide AI botshit as a service to news brands. While Navarro doesn't say so, I'm willing to bet that for news bosses, outsourcing your botshit scams to a third party is considered an excellent way of avoiding your journalists' wrath. The biggest botshit-as-a-service company is ASR Group (which also uses the alias Advon Commerce).
Advon claims that its botshit is, in fact, written by humans. But Advon's employees' Linkedin profiles tell a different story, boasting of their mastery of AI tools in the industrial-scale production of botshit:
https://housefresh.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Advon-AI-LinkedIn.jpg
Now, none of this is particularly sophisticated. It doesn't take much discernment to spot when a site is engaged in "site reputation abuse." Presumably, the 12,000 googlers the company fired last year could have been employed to check the top review keyword results manually every couple of days and permaban any site caught cheating this way.
Instead, Google is has announced a change in policy: starting May 5, the company will downrank any site caught engaged in site reputation abuse. However, the company takes a very narrow view of site reputation abuse, limiting punishments to sites that employ third parties to generate or uprank their botshit. Companies that produce their botshit in-house are seemingly not covered by this policy.
As Navarro writes, some sites – like Forbes – have prepared for May 5 by blocking their botshit sections from Google's crawler. This can't be their permanent strategy, though – either they'll have to kill the section or bring it in-house to comply with Google's rules. Bringing things in house isn't that hard: US News and World Report is advertising for an SEO editor who will publish 70-80 posts per month, doubtless each one a masterpiece of high-quality, carefully researched material of great value to Google's users:
https://twitter.com/dannyashton/status/1777408051357585425
As Navarro points out, Google is palpably reluctant to target the largest, best-funded spammers. Its March 2024 update kicked many garbage AI sites out of the index – but only small bottom-feeders, not large, once-respected publications that have been colonized by private equity spam-farmers.
All of this comes at a price, and it's only incidentally paid by legitimate sites like Housefresh. The real price is borne by all of us, who are funneled by the 90%-market-share search engine into "review" sites that push low quality, high-price products. Housefresh's top budget air purifier costs $79. That's hundreds of dollars cheaper than the "budget" pick at other sites, who largely perform no original research.
Google search has a problem. AI botshit is dominating Google's search results, and it's not just in product reviews. Searches for infrastructure code samples are dominated by botshit code generated by Pulumi AI, whose chatbot hallucinates nonexistence AWS features:
https://www.theregister.com/2024/05/01/pulumi_ai_pollution_of_search/
This is hugely consequential: when these "hallucinations" slip through into production code, they create huge vulnerabilities for widespread malicious exploitation:
https://www.theregister.com/2024/03/28/ai_bots_hallucinate_software_packages/
We've put all our eggs in Google's basket, and Google's dropped the basket – but it doesn't matter because they can spend $20b/year bribing Apple to make sure no one ever tries a rival search engine on Ios or Safari:
https://finance.yahoo.com/news/google-payments-apple-reached-20-220947331.html
Google's response – laying off core developers, outsourcing to low-waged territories with weak labor protections and spending billions on stock buybacks – presents a picture of a company that is too big to care:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/04/04/teach-me-how-to-shruggie/#kagi
Google promised us a quid-pro-quo: let them be the single, authoritative portal ("organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful"), and they will earn that spot by being the best search there is:
https://www.ft.com/content/b9eb3180-2a6e-41eb-91fe-2ab5942d4150
But – like the spammers at the top of its search result pages – Google didn't earn its spot at the center of our digital lives.
It cheated.

The Music in the Dark - A christmas fanfiction of ‘The Long Dark’
I read an article once. It said that if scientists were to ever succeed in reanimating a brain, it would be really unethical, cause it would experience all the pain of being detached from its body, and partially decomposed. That’s one of the big problems of bringing animals, or people, back to life. Some damage is inevitable, especially inside, and you’d wake up to that. Kicking and screaming, no grip on your own senses. I always think of a dead pig’s head, eyes wide open, jaws stammering, trying to squeal but with no lungs to breathe, and having some kinda seizure from the brain damage.
Well, that’s what happens to all the electricals when the aurora hits. The artifacts of the industrial age aren’t allowed to sleep - they’re forced back to life. Lights flickering, motors whirring pointlessly, wires crackling and sparking, exposed like muscles where their rubber is slashed open. I guess I speak for everyone still alive on earth when I say that it’s a terrible reminder of what was lost, of the times we used to have when we had supermarkets, electric heating and running water. Technology opening its eyes and screaming with a mad look in its eye, being tortured in its botched reanimation, all around you in the middle of the night.
Point is, an aurora hit on the night of Christmas Eve in 1998. I was hunkered in my safehouse on Great Bear Island in one of the buildings near Mystery Lake, a former tourist campsite. I was only vaguely aware it was meant to be Christmas, but I didn’t pay it much mind. When there’s no-one to talk to and you can never get too comfortable, there’s no use for festivities anymore. I didn’t think so anyway. Every day had been snowy for the past three months already, so I didn’t find the snow outside particularly beautiful or romantic. I was sipping rosehip tea, curling up in front of the stove, as usual, thinking about the work that needed doing tomorrow. Then the aurora hit. The lights stuttered in my face, and the radio flipped on, spewing a gargled static. It sounded like there were hints of human voices in there, but I thought that was just in my head. I shuffled over to the radio and fiddled with the knobs, just to see what would happen, then I found the music. Weirdly, there was often music on the radio, and I never figured out why. I don’t really know how it all works. It was always some quiet classical stuff. I thought it was some automated thing, but this time the playlist was different.
Christmas music. I sat down and listened for a while. The classics, ‘White Christmas’ and such, in slow, gentle jazz. Things I hadn’t heard in a while. I realised where I should have been. Back home in Vancouver, with my family - Mom, Dad, Ellie. Warm colours flashed through my mind. Cushy sofas. Good food. Roast meats, potatoes, desserts and stuff. People laughing and singing. Uncle Peter and his kids coming in, stamping off the snow and taking off their jackets, bearing gifts. I doubted there was much generosity left in the world anymore. I didn’t want to think about what the Blackout did to the cities. I didn’t think I’d ever know if anyone I knew was still alive or where they were. I thought I made peace with this months ago, but the music dragged it all up to the surface again.
I broke down sobbing, and I got angry. Angry with the world for doing this to me, angry with the radio for mocking me. I was ready to throw it to the floor and wreck it. I didn’t want to think about the times before. All that ever gave me was pain, and distracted me from what was in front of me - a bleak future of isolation at the frozen end of the world, where only my sheer wits, skills and determination saw me to the next day. Sentimentality wouldn’t put food in my mouth or wood in the fire. I raised my fist, but just as I was about to bring it down on the machine, the song changed abruptly. I wasn’t sure what the song was, but that’s irrelevant - what was important is that the radio behaved like there was someone on the other side, a DJ.
Someone, I decided, must have been in control of the radio music. Maybe they had reasons to never talk, but that meant that whenever conditions allowed, someone was spending their time sitting in a radio station, broadcasting music to everyone who could listen. And that’s the closest thing I had to contact with another person for a whole year. Not a frozen corpse, not the blood-stained scrawlings of people getting ready to die, not the characters in the books, but someone, today, comfortable or crazy enough to spend their time in a radio station. I realised I had been pessimistic. Christmas is still alive. My family may still be alive.
I will build a boat next summer. But for now, I will sit inside by the fire at night, with the snow falling out the window, waiting for another chance to listen to the radio, reaching out across the miles in togetherness. If my fire can be a light in the dark, so can the fires of other people all over Canada, and the world.
#the long dark#I was very inspired to write this when alone in the house listening to xmas music in the kitchen#I've been playing a lot more TLD lately. Zone of Contamination is a shithole and I can't wait to finish the tale and leave.#I miss Mystery Lake

Long-Distance Property Owners: Stay in Control of Your Rental Property
Owning rental properties can be a lucrative investment, especially in vibrant markets like Portland, OR and Vancouver, WA. But what happens when you can’t be physically present to oversee your rental? Whether you’re managing property due to relocation or simply expanding your portfolio beyond your zip code, being a long-distance landlord presents unique challenges. Luckily, with the right strategies, you can ensure your rental is in good hands. Enter Next Brick, your comprehensive solution for seamless remote property management.
1. Leverage Local Market Insights
Understanding local rental trends is a very important point for landlords in making informed decisions. While Portland, OR, and Vancouver, WA, both are highly competitive markets with strong tenant demand, nuances exist in each of these markets that long-distance landlords need to know.
Portland, OR: The average Portland rental rate in 2023 is $1,740/month; additionally, the demand for apartments and single-family homes is steadily going up as the population in this city continues to grow. Portland's vacancy rate is at 5.6%, which means quality rentals will have to be contested for, but at the same time, the fact that landlords are readily holding onto occupants keeps this rate alive.
Vancouver, WA:Vancouver is slightly lower with average rent around $1,550/month but continues to increase steadily in demand from those looking for an option less expensive than Portland yet able to stay within commuting distance. Vancouver puts them at 4.2% vacancy, making it an attractive market for long-term rentals.
As a long-distance landlord, tracking these trends will be very important for your investment. Next Brick provides rental pricing and market vacancy trends as well as data on tenant behavior in the markets, ensuring therefore that your property will be priced right and occupied day in and day out.
2. Set Up Automated Systems for Smooth Operations
A long-distance landlord does not necessarily have to lose control over your property. In the worst-case scenario, automation can essentially take care of much of your property management up to tenant onboarding and rent collection.
Automated Rent Collection: In Portland, OR, nearly 35% of renters prefer online payment options. In Vancouver, WA, the figure is around 30%, meaning providing automated and flexible rent collection methods is crucial. Next Brick offers an automated rent collection service that allows tenants to pay rent securely and on time, reducing the risk of late payments.
Tenant Communication: With property management software platforms, automatic communication with tenants, making of maintenance requests, and sending out notices are possible. Routine check-in and repair handling can be handled real-time, getting you connected to what's going on at all times.
3. Maintain Compliance with Local Regulations
The rental laws and rules may vary significantly between the states and even cities. Long-distance landlords may need to know what type of specific thing is happening in Portland Property Management and Vancouver to avoid legal pitfalls.
Portland, OR: Portland has laws that ban no-cause evictions and prohibits restrictions on the amount that can be charged for rent. After 2023, landlords will be allowed to raise the rents by only 10% per year, and raises greater than 7% will necessitate a written notice.
Vancouver, WA: Although Washington state's tenant laws are quite strict also, Vancouver Property Management Owners must give 60 days' notice of a rent increase, while eviction procedures have to be followed according to the state mandates that cover tenant rights and legal protections.
By partnering with Next Brick, you’ll have access to legal expertise ensuring compliance with all local regulations, keeping your rental business running smoothly while avoiding fines or legal disputes.
4. Delegate Maintenance and Repairs to a Trusted Local Team
Repairs and maintenance are also one of the biggest difficulties that a distant landlord might face. This is because you're dealing with a property from a faraway place, and when problems arise, having a responsive and dependable team on ground is important.
Vetted Local Vendors: Next Brick has teams licensed and fully insured in both Portland and Vancouver. And whether it's a leaky roof, or a more serious problem like a faulty HVAC system, we can coordinate and manage the repairs with our trusted vendors. Issues are usually dealt with quickly and professionally.
Routine Inspections: Don't wait for problems to be a problem. Regular inspection can help catch the problem at the stage where it might be easy to handle before it becomes one. Next Brick offers virtual quarterly inspections by video walkthrough, and our local agents conduct in-person inspections when necessary. This proactive approach ensures that your property remains in top shape, cutting off costly repairs that could arise later.
5. Screen Tenants with Precision
Having reliable tenants is the foundation of successful remote property management. Screening tenants thoroughly is even more important when you can’t physically meet them.
Data-Backed Screening: In Portland, vacancy rates are going to stabilize in the next few years, so tenant selection will become all the more important. Growth in Vancouver translates to increased demand for quality rentals, and careful screening to ensure that only the best tenants occupy your rental is paramount. Next Brick utilizes industry-leading tenant screening software encompassing background checks, credit reports, rental history, and income verification, so only the best tenant will occupy your rental.
Tenant Retention: Keeping good tenants is the best way of avoiding high turnover as well as ensuring there is always a constant rental income. Key good maintenance include competitive rental rates, prompt response in regards to maintenance requests, and clear communication. Next Brick's tenant retention strategies will help you build lasting relationships with your tenants, thus saving you a lot of effort and costs on frequent turnovers.
6. Handle Emergencies with Reliable Support
When emergencies happen, the last thing you want is to be scrambling from across the country to find a solution. Having a reliable support system is crucial.
Emergency Response: Next Brick provides prompt emergency assistance, striving to resolve urgent issues within the same day or within 24 hours. Whether it's a burst pipe or a power outage, our team acts swiftly to minimize further damage or tenant dissatisfaction. For non-urgent maintenance concerns, we aim to address them within 2-3 days as efficiently as possible.
7. Keep Financials in Check
The review of the rental's financial performance is critical in keeping it a worthwhile investment. Not so many long-distance landlords are able to manage this aspect, especially when there are several rental units to oversee.
Financial Reporting: The next thing it has is a type of online platform that breaks out detailed monthly reports showing your properties' cash flow, expenses, and profits. All these easily accessed financial statements enable you to make intelligent decisions on rent increases, repairs, and even expansion of your portfolio.
Expense Management: With regard to such expenses as vendor payments, maintenance costs, and other operational expenses, our team manages these on your behalf so that you are always aware of expenditures in real-time, and you can hence stay on top of the profitability of your property even from afar.
Why Next Brick Is Your Ultimate Partner for Long-Distance Property Management

Next Brick provides long-distance landlords with a comprehensive suite of services tailored to the unique needs of the Portland, OR and Vancouver, WA markets. Custom Software Development Services in Canada: Driving Innovation in the Digital Era
As businesses navigate a rapidly evolving digital landscape, the demand for custom software development services is higher than ever. In Canada, companies across various sectors are leveraging these services to build solutions that are specifically designed to address their unique needs. Unlike off-the-shelf software, custom solutions offer greater flexibility, scalability, and the ability to integrate seamlessly with existing systems.
Why Custom Software Development?
Custom software development allows businesses to innovate by creating applications and systems tailored to their specific requirements. While pre-built software often serves a general purpose, it may lack the unique features that align with a company's objectives. Custom solutions, on the other hand, are designed to enhance operational efficiency, improve customer experience, and give companies a competitive edge.
Key Benefits of Custom Software
Tailored to Business Needs: Custom software addresses the exact needs of an organization. Whether it's streamlining internal operations or enhancing customer engagement, a personalized approach ensures the solution aligns perfectly with the company’s goals.
Scalability: As businesses grow, so do their software requirements. Custom Software Development Services Canada, adding new features and integrating new technologies to meet expanding business needs without disruption.
Cost-Effective in the Long Run: While the initial investment for custom software may be higher than off-the-shelf options, it often becomes more cost-effective over time. The long-term benefits of having a tailored solution that grows with the business outweigh the recurring costs of licenses, updates, and modifications of pre-packaged software.
Enhanced Security: Custom software offers better protection against cyber threats because it is designed with the business's specific security requirements in mind. Unlike widely used software that is vulnerable to common exploits, custom solutions can incorporate advanced security protocols tailored to the company's needs.
Integration with Existing Systems: One of the major challenges businesses face with off-the-shelf software is integration. Custom solutions, however, can be built to integrate seamlessly with existing systems, creating a cohesive technology ecosystem within the organization.
Canada’s Thriving Tech Ecosystem
Canada has become a hub for technology and innovation, with cities like Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal emerging as leading centers for software development. The country's strong educational institutions, tech-savvy workforce, and supportive government policies make it an ideal environment for custom software development.
Local companies are increasingly turning to Canadian developers to build bespoke solutions that meet regulatory standards, especially in industries like healthcare, finance, and e-commerce. Canada's diverse talent pool of developers, engineers, and data scientists ensures businesses can access world-class expertise right at home.
Industries Benefiting from Custom Software in Canada
Healthcare: The healthcare industry is a major consumer of Custom Software Development Toronto. Solutions are designed to streamline patient management, integrate electronic health records, and improve diagnostic processes.
Finance and Fintech: Financial institutions rely on custom software for enhanced security, automation of services, and data analytics. Canada’s burgeoning fintech industry is driving demand for personalized financial solutions that improve customer experience and regulatory compliance.
Retail and E-commerce: With the rise of online shopping, custom software helps retailers manage inventory, process transactions efficiently, and offer personalized customer experiences.
Manufacturing: In manufacturing, custom solutions are often used to optimize production processes, improve supply chain management, and ensure quality control.

Lives Could have been saves in Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapse in Balt... Many Canadian Bridges Also Unprotected From Ship Collisions and Potential Collapse The Vancouver company designing the AIIMS (Accidental Infrastructure Impact Avoidance System) says their Hybrid software and hardware technology would not have been able to prevent the Baltimore Bridge Collision but could have offered more warning and stopped traffic on the bridge before the collapse. Although the system is not ready for launch yet, it is coming and could be used to prevent or mitigate damages and injuries for land and water-based collisions with infrastructure including bridges, tunnels, buildings etc. Most importantly it can save lives by early detection of potential pending impacts and activating the system's automated warnings to stop surrounding traffic earlier than other means of doing so. The Province of BC has been rejected from the ability to use the system as they showed interest and scheduled preliminary meetings with the company but failed to show up for scheduled meetings with the company and no courtesy of notification to the company of non-attendance. The company had made special arrangements for the Government of BC to help provide solutions after a large number of impacts with highway overpasses in BC to save lives in the home province of the company.
