This phenomenal and enormous “diamond” necklace, created by Eugene Joseff (@joseffofhollywood_official) was most famously worn by the great Greta Garbo as Marguerite Gautier in the 1936 film 𝑪𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒆. Joseff, usually known as “Joseff of Hollywood,” rented his jewelry to all of the Hollywood studios, so it is no surprise that this necklace later appeared in the 1940 United Artists film 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑾𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒏𝒆𝒓, where it was worn by Lilian Bond portraying Lily Langtry. We’ve documented quite a few of Joseff’s pieces over the years, so be sure to check them out on our website! Bit.ly/JosofHolly

#JewelledJuly Day 6 (and my brother's birthday post)- Merle Oberon’s Emerald Necklace, Cartier, 1938- emeralds and white diamonds, set in platinum on a platinum chain. An incredibly exotic design, the emeralds used in this piece are rumoured to have originally belonged to a Maharaja. These 29 stones are impressively sized and coloured, and are perfectly graduated to create an elegant balance of shape and size that is not usually seen in necklaces using similarly sized gems. The necklace's construction is also quite rare, with the emeralds being suspended from diamond- studded platinum loop bails that rotate completely around a heavy inner chain. This 360° movement allows the necklace to lay perfectly around the neck, gracefully sweeping across the lines of a woman’s collar bone. Years after its purchase Ms. Oberon admitted to having been in a war with Elsa Schiaparelli over the sale of this necklace back in 1937. She mentioned this in the book “Hollywood Jewels”: “She almost got it! I saw it in a Paris shop, and I went back a second time to look at it. The salesman said someone else was interested, but I only half believed him. The next time I went in, the necklace was not in the case. My mysterious rival had been looking at it in one of the little private rooms. Still I hesitated because the design was so exotic – so unlike the classic settings for precious stones. The next day I walked right by the shop, not intending to be tempted again, but Mme. Schiaparelli was just coming out. Instantly I knew why she had been there, and assumed she had the necklace right in her handbag. I must have looked my disappointment when I got back to the hotel, because Mr. Korda, in his direct way, put on his hat and went out. He walked across to the shop; the necklace was still there, and he bought it.” @cartier #jewelledjuly #merleoberon #cartier #famousgems #famousjewelry #emerald #diamonds #hollywoodjewels
