Do you have any idea of the the Hogwarts Founders might look like? (I know this is different but I’m curious)
Tumblr media
Well…here’s some thoughts, Anon. I think they were a polycule.
I love how all the art produced for Harry Potter is like “The Founders were generally nice-looking people. Except for Slytherin who looked like a terrifying old villain.”
And maybe that’s true, but let’s say they were all hot at the same time at some point.

maybe i'm just drunk but. the harry potter universe is really just a tragedy of brothers in different generations of the wizardibg world. starting all the way in the beginning with the story of the deathly hallows. to the founding of hogwarts. to dumbledore and aberforth. to sirius and regulus. to the weasley brothers. to james and albus. just over and over the tragedy of brothers

Found family is like Crack to me. Like YES give me more of a group of people who are not related, who do not fit into the nuclear family stereotype, but are still a family! Who fight for and support each other. They might not always agree about things but the love is there.

The Founders as Myth and the Characterization of Voldemort
ok so as a fandom we should be willing to admit that story we get in canon about the foundation of hogwarts makes like no sense historically right? like how the fuck was this modern school existing in tenth century Scotland (scotland of all places). that does not track with any basic historical knowledge how the fuck was a nineteenth century boarding school randomly invented in the tenth century without massively changing the history of British education. It is much more likely that the institution of Hogwarts grew over time and its original form was nothing like the modern form. so in order to resolve this dilemma we should be able to admit that the founders are at least somewhat mythologized. the only one we have any evidence really existed was Rowena ravenclaw, and like the grey lady could be lying. And Rowena Ravenclaw existing...doesn't actually imply the others did. It makes more sense that they would be either not even real people or historical figures given anachronistic significance (your classic random medieval king suddenly the founder of a nation in the nineteenth century).
So where does this leave us? With a much more plausible idea of the founders as the foundational myth of modern wizarding Britain. Yay fun with historiography!!!
Except. Oh. Wait. Isn't there a character who would be massively impacted by this headcanon. Oh. Yeah. The main villain of the series, a man notably obsessed with his own self-mythology...see the Dark Mark and the whole title of Lord Voldemort, an identity specifically constructed to be all that Tom Riddle was not.
I think it's really interesting to think about Voldemort's characterization in light of the idea of Salazar Slytherin as a historiographical myth. Whether or not Voldemort knew his imagined ancestor it's very intriguing, but I think Voldemort knew. He's smart and inquisitive and interested in making himself into a figure of myth. Voldemort isn't descended from Salazar Slytherin. He deliberately played into the myth of Slytherin to create his self image and power.
This raises the further questions of the artifact horcruxes. Did Voldemort think they were real? I personally believe the locket and cup had no powers but were made up artifacts for made up founders, family heirlooms of the Smith and who-even-knows families given a founder association for prestige, and the diadem was a real artifact made by a real scholar named Rowena Ravenclaw (with a more period accurate name this is the modernization lol) that was later associated with Hogwarts. If you interpret Voldemort as buying into the mythology, he could easily have believed the artifacts had more power than they actually did (which is pretty funny and IC of him lol, mr. I don't actually know how the elder wand works). But if Voldemort knew Slytherin was made up, did he choose the artifacts to keep playing up the myth by disappearing these famous items, like the cup of Hufflepuff? Did at some point he lose track of whether he was faking it?
I don't have the answer to every question about how treating Salazar Slytherin as a myth impacts Voldemort's characterization, but I think it's a really interesting example of how worldbuilding can make characters more nuanced and I think this idea should be talked about more!

An overwhelming number of readers have requested that I write a Salazar Slytherin/Hermione Granger one-shot at some point, after reading Severus’s POV in my Ink & Alchemy fic, where he thinks to himself that if Hermione were in Slytherin House, he would not be rolling in his grave, as Hermione believes, but he would be on his knees before her. I’m too focused for the moment on Ink & Alchemy, but I do take breaks here and there so when that need arises, I’ll revisit this. For now, enjoy this opening teaser.
Note that I have cast a very complicated translation spell on this story. Trust me when I say that reading everything in Old English/Anglo-Saxon will give you a headache. If you think Shakespeare is hard to read, it’s got nothing on even earlier versions of English. 😉
Without further ado, I present the opening for
on his knees before her
980 AD — Ten Years Before Hogwarts
The candlelight flickered in the drafty chamber, throwing jagged shadows across the rough-hewn walls. The room smelled of damp earth and parchment, the scent of an evening storm barely held at bay by the thick wooden beams overhead. A map was spread across the heavy oak table, its ink gleaming wetly where Helga had smoothed out the latest additions—tower placements, underground passages, the Great Hall’s soaring silhouette beginning to take shape.
“Well,” she said, settling back with a satisfied sigh, “it’s finally happening.”
Rowena didn’t look up from the calculations she was etching into the margins of a separate scroll. “Not quite. The foundation stones haven’t been laid yet.”
“Details,” Godric said, his lips curling into a grin as he lifted a goblet of mead. “We have the land. We have the plans. Helga has found us a stonemason—”
“From the Empire, no less,” Helga interjected, pleased. “His enchantments will ensure the walls hold strong for centuries.”
“And we have us.” Godric gestured between them, copper hair catching the candlelight. “We’re well on our way.”
Salazar exhaled through his nose, arms crossed, eyes hooded. “How very optimistic of you,” he murmured. “A fortress does not make a school.”
“Which brings us,” Godric said, undeterred, “to the matter of teachers.” He tapped a finger against the table. “We cannot do this alone. We may be masters of our crafts, but even we cannot split ourselves eight ways.”
Rowena finally looked up, quill poised. “You propose bringing others into the fold?”
“No. I propose we create them.”
Salazar arched a brow, skepticism evident in the slight tilt of his head.
Godric leaned forward. “Think of it—what we know, what we have mastered, handed down. Not to just any who seek it, but to those we deem worthy. Those we choose.”
Rowena hummed thoughtfully. “A formal apprenticeship program.”
Helga’s eyes lit up. “That’s brilliant!”
Salazar scoffed. “It’s unnecessary.”
“It’s essential,” Rowena corrected, rolling up her scroll. “If we are to build something lasting, we must ensure those who follow us are worthy of carrying it forward.”
Helga nodded. “She’s right. If we are to teach children, we must have skilled professors. We cannot do both alone.”
Godric smirked. “And wouldn’t you rather shape your own successors than leave it to fate?”
Salazar’s lips pressed into a thin line, but he did not immediately refute the idea.
Rowena seized the opening. “Two years,” she said. “Each of us goes out into the world, conducts our own tests, selects one apprentice—anyone, from anywhere, any age. We mentor them in our chosen craft. After the first two years, we switch. They will study under each of us, learning all we have to offer.”
Helga leaned forward eagerly. “By the time they have completed eight years, they will be as close to equals as students can become.”
“And in a decade, when the school is ready,” Rowena finished, “we will have a staff worthy of Hogwarts.”
Silence stretched between them.
Salazar tapped a finger against his arm. “You are asking me to part with my knowledge freely.”
“No,” Rowena said smoothly. “I am asking you to ensure that only those who are truly deserving receive it.”
Godric watched Salazar with sharp, knowing eyes. “You’d get to choose, Slytherin.”
The words settled over the chamber.
Salazar’s fingers tightened fractionally. “Fine,” he said at last, though it tasted like gravel on his tongue.
Godric grinned, but before the meeting could be called to a close, Salazar added, low and cool—
“No Mudbloods.”
Helga sighed. Rowena rolled her eyes.
Godric only smirked, his eyes twinkling with something that made Salazar bristle.
As if he already knew exactly which filthy little Mudblood he would one day put in Salazar’s path.
———————
What do you think? Should I roll with it?? It’ll take some time (I’m not at a point I need a break from I&A yet, I’m too obsessed at the moment), but I think the premise could be intriguing. ♥️

𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲 | 𝐛𝐫𝐨𝐤𝐞𝐧 𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐧 | 𝐫𝐞-𝐮𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐚𝐝
i updated this past project of mine and included some of the characters who weren't in the earlier version. this video is probably my favourite video project out of all of the videos i've made for this blog, and i love the new version even more. i added 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐟 𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲 -text written by @fischerfrey on the youtube video, so if you're new to this family or don't remember the plot, the text is readable there.
special thank you to @endlessly-cursed and @hphmmatthewluther for hosting this year's founders era appreciation week, which inspired me to re-make this project!

Why do people constantly have to suck the fun out of everything? If I want to see the pevensie siblings from narnia as the founders of hogwarts, I'm going to see them that way.
