Letters to Brenda

I've been on break from daily sketches so have this little bit of writing I did for this piece!

Dear Brenda,

I met the farmer today. He's a lovely old man named Garius. He caught me writing a letter and graciously allowed me to stay in exchange for helping on the farm. He is also helping me learn to write– this letter is his transcription –with some flair– that I will study before I send it out.

I didn't really like learning to write in school, but the way Garius talks about it makes me more interested. He's been writing his own letters for a very long time. I like when people teach from experience.

Dear Brenda,

I've been working alot for Garius. I almost fergot to rite. I learned how to sharpen tools to get reddy for planting. I cut myself on a spade but I'm okay. I also chop wood but it's getting too warm for the fire place now.

Dear Brenda,

We finished planting and fixing up the fences. The horse is really old so it took a while but Garius didn't want to buy a new one. He got a new ax and let me keep the old one. I can probbly fix it with a new handle. He tried teeching me to cook but I don't like the stove. I can still cut up vegables and stuff.

Some angree peple came to the farm and Garius made me hide in the attick. I think they don't like me being here. Garius got them to leeve.

I hope the teachers are being nice to you. I know you won't bite them if they're meen.

Dear Brenda,

I'm still practissing my writing, but Garius needs a lot more help. He fell down really hard during the midsummer festivle, and I helped him move his bed downsters. I hope he gets better before harvest. I wanted to find him a healer but he wanted me to stay on the farm so he could keep teaching me. But he said I should visit you sometime but I don't want to visit unless you want to see me agin. I'll be here if you want to write back.

Dear Brenda,

I hope you are well. Garius healed from his fall, but is still moving slowly. He asked to write for me again. We have almost finished the harvest and are getting prepared to sell it at the market. Garius has made sure I can go in disguise, but I wish I didn't have to– I hate wearing sunhats.

We got a very good crop, and Garius is excited that he may be able to buy some good lumber. He wants to fix up the farmhouse and build me my own room, but I'm probably going to do most of the lifting. I think he should spend it on getting better animals.

I hope you are doing well in school. I forget if there are classes in the summer.

P.S.

Brenda, I hope you can take some time out of your life to write to Claide. She is doing well on her own, and I am taking care of her as best I can, but I fear for her safety if I am no longer around. I will try to send her to you if that happens, though she seems to be reluctant.

You have an amazing sister. I hope you two can reconcile whatever separated you. I have been apart from my sons for nine years now. They occasionally send me gifts from whatever big city they are in, but I would love to see them face to face one more time. Don't let that opportunity pass you by.

Dear Brenda

We had a really fun time at the market. I got a brand new pocketnife with a saw and an ice pick, and a cool lether holder for my axe. Garius bought a big fresh steak that we ate with leftovers and also a new horse. This one is young but also really short. I don't know if it'll be good at pulling anything.

When we got home he took a bag of money and told me to hide it somewhere only I could reech. Maybe those angry people want to take it.

I really like fresh steak. We should eat fresh steak when I come see you.

Garius died in bed. I don't know if he was sick or old. He told me to get the money and horse and run. I almost got caught in the house by the angry people but I chopped down the beam we didn't finish and got away.

I'm not sure where I am. A group of traders let me stay at camp but I didn't want to go with them. I think I need to be alone. I sent this letter with them so I hope you find it.

I'm okay.

Dear Brenda,

I'm okay. I'm outside a town but they don't seem nice. One of them tried to steal my bag when I went shopping, so next time I can only bring a little bit of gold in. I might just take stuff that they throw away. I don't like being near them.

I need to get stronger.

Dear Brenda,

I lost an ear. I can still hear though. I just have a hard time balancing. I found a broken trading cart and was picking up leftovers when I got attacked by a big monster. It probably was the thing that broke the cart. Good thing the cart had a healing potion, but it also had a warming potion and I couldn't tell the difference so I'm sweating a lot right now.

It also had a couple weapons. I could only take a short sword and a dagger. I'll practice with them once I can balance again.

Dear Brenda,

I'm doing good. I got caught by an adventure party that kept me because they needed someone small to get into a cave. We got through and they gave me a cool dager. One of them is named Brumm, I think he's a dworf, and he told me about different kinds of weapons. I think my dagger is a flambear.

They asked me to help them again, but I didn't like their bard so I stayed in town. I'm helping other people get into small spaces. The bartender lets me sleep in the spare closet. I only take food that people leave behind at the bar. I took a wetstone for my weapons but it's still in the same bilding so it's not stealing.

I'll be here for a while so you can send a letter back if you want.

I'm going to leave here. The party came back. The dwarf is missing and they want help finding him. They let me keep his battle ax until we find him. I will try to come back here when I'm done. I will be okay.

Dear Brenda,

We're in a big city. I almost got run over by a cart but the bard saved me, so I hate her less now. I still have to be in disguise but they got me a big scarf instead, which is a lot better than a sun hat. I wish Garius was here. Maybe his sons are here. I don't know what they look like.

I got to buy some throwing knives, but my party took them away because I missed one when practicing and broke a window. I'll have to get them back later.

What are you learning in school? I bet you're really good at reading and writing now. You could probably be a teacher there if you wanted.

We're going into a mountain dungeon soon. There's big metal torches outside the doors. I hope there's not a lot more inside. I've gotten some practice with the battle axe, it's heavy but I can make it work. It's not very different from woodcutting. I won't be as good as the dwarf but I'll do my best.

Dear Brenda,

We found the dwarf but he was actually a bad guy who wanted to use a magic gem to take over the mountain. I beat him because he forgot that fused dwarven steel is harder than tempered standard steel and I broke his sword. I guess cults make you dumb.

The party let me keep his stuff because they said I earned it. The armor doesn't fit me so I'm going to sell it here in town. After that I think I'll travel again. I don't like staying here anymore.

I'm back at our old home. There's not much there anymore, but all the grass is back and some of the flowers too. I tried fixing one of the huts but the wood was too rotten. Maybe we can fix it up together. Or maybe you don't want to go back. That's okay.

I'm okay. I'm staying at a blacksmith's hut for a while. I don't like the forge but I'm in a corner far away from it so I can still watch the anvil. It's pretty cool. I want to make my own weapon some day.

"Then what happened te her??"

"I couldn't tell ya. This school doesn't even accept goblins."

"But we were here! Maybe they just didn't want us on the records."

"Then I'm afraid there's not much I can do."

"What abou' all the letters I sent?"

"If someone isn't here we usually just destroy the mail."

"Why??!?"

"Jus' the way it is, love. Please leave if you're going to cause a scene."

"Ye said yer lookin for a goblin?"

"Aye. My sister. It was a long time ago but we both went to school here."

"Eyyyyy, I think I remember you two. You stayed in Sister Dannes' room, didn'tcha?"

"I think so. You're the janitor right?"

"Well I prefer 'custodian', but yep, that's me."

"Where's Sister Dannes?"

"She's resting in peace now, bless her. Hope she's getting all she deserves for her years of hard work."

"Where's Brenda?"

"I think she left a while ago. 'Bout a year after you did."

"Where did she go?"

"Not sure t'be honest. Probably to a different school."

"Why dinn she stay here?"

"Heh… well, I know you were the troublemaker, but she weren't particularly welcome here either. Dannes was the only one vouching for 'er."

"So she's at a new school somewhere."

"That'd be my guess."

"Thanks."

"Hey, wait a min'! You sure you don't wanna stick around and catch up?"

"No. I've wasted enough time."

Dear Brenda,

I don't know where you are. I know why you didn't answer my letters now, but I'm still mad. I hope I won't be as mad when I see you, because right now I feel like stabbing you a lot of times. Maybe you feel the same way. I guess if we stab each other it's fine.

I don't even know if you're alive. I don't know where to send this. I'm going to look into more schools until I find you. Or find out what happened to you.

I don't know where to send this, so I guess I'll just keep it. Or throw it away.
