Wenn der Gründer und Verleger der legendären Buchreihe „New York Review Books“ (NYRB) eine Geschichte des Romans im 20. Jahrhundert veröffentlicht, dann ist dies ein Grund zur Freude. Edwin Frank stellt in seinem Buch „Stranger than Fiction“ 33 Romane des letzten und vorletzten Jahrhunderts vor. Er beginnt seine chronologische Literaturgeschichte mit Dostojewskis „Aufzeichnungen aus einem Kellerloch“ (1864) und endet mit dem 2001 erschienen Roman „Austerlitz“ von W.G. Sebald. Neben bekannten Namen wie Virginia Woolf oder Colette rückt Frank auch vergessene Autoren und Autorinnen wie Machado de Assis oder Anna Banti ins Rampenlicht. Wer Literatur (auch) als Entdeckungsreise betrachtet, der wird hier sicherlich fündig. Offiziell ein gefährliches Buch, weil man als Leser gleich zum Buchladen oder Antiquariat (viele Romane sind leider nicht mehr erhältlich) laufen möchte. Was übrigens betrüblich ist, weil Verlage kaum noch etwas mit der Pflege von Klassikern und Backlists zu tun haben wollen.
