“The cat will mew, and the dog will have his day” is a famous line from Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Along with mewing for the Danish Prince, there are over 30 references to cats in Shakespeare’s plays, attesting to the popularity of our favourite feline in the life of Elizabethan England.
Far from just being good mouse catchers, cats during the life of William Shakespeare were also profitable members of several economic industries including the work of medical apothecaries and the perfume industry.
This is a really entertaining video about how medieval people viewed women.
If you ever encounter a guy who tries to tell you that beauty standards have remained the same throughout history, watch a minute or so of this starting at about the 8 minute mark, and rock your pot belly.
Well, this is easily one of the most entertaining undirected discussion of history I've heard in a long time. I highly recommend it if you have an hour and need something to listen to.
Interesting that the History Hit channel uploaded a YouTube video of a historian talking about how accurate Gladiator the movie is, on the very same day YouTube made the movie Gladiator free on YouTube.
...Almost like there's a THING going on here.
And honestly, I'm not really complaining. Crowd-sourcing special features content for free streaming movies sounds like something the early 2000s would have guessed would happen, back when we were young and naive and the Internet wasn't as much of a horrible wasteland yet.
