Fruits Basket Manga Review ch (76 & 77)

So, I decided to read the manga mainly in search for a more natural balanced female presentation than the idealistic, shallower, savior depiction of tohru in the anime.

I’m intentionally skipping all the chapters of her as a (mother figure) in yuki’s life & won’t read them or even visit them for comparison with the anime. I love yuki’s growth story & the unique depiction of his platonic relationship with tohru, but if his mother-tohru phase was a drink, then the anime has force fed it to me till it came from my nose! So, for yuki, I’ll be reading his growth past-his mother confession.

I’ve consulted my lovely manga readers friends & thy recommended starting from ch 90 since the content in that chapter was completely cut! but some recommended checking kyoto chapters first since they contain a nice glimpse of the author’s style & artistic vision. Kyoto ep in the anime isn’t focused on “mom-tohru” so, i like the idea! I’ll jump to ch 90 right after ch 77.

- Subtle growth of a woman ( Clash of visions & presentation between the manga’s “ Loosing the wallet with mom’s photo vs the anime’s fractured photo frame):

I really love the underlined connotation of tohru loosing her “mom” unknowingly! In the anime, this scene played without any reference to kyoko & tohru’s attachment to her. We saw tohru the teenage girl confused as she experience romantic love for the first time. Nothing more than that. But the manga says “ Main female MC is way deeper than a (mom-figure) or a (girl in love), In this panel, tohru chases after kyo & unknowingly looses her famous wallet containing her mom’s picture. Here’s what this subtly indicates:

 Normally, tohru would notice right away that her wallet is missing, here she never even notice until kyo suggest they hang out together. Subtly indicating that tohru is moving further & further from her phase of “ an afraid, grieving, abandoned child clinging to her mom”.

Normally, tohru would panic, say “ mom is missing” & everyone around her goes into search mode to make tohru at ease (hiro’s ep). Here once she notices, she says “ my wallet is missing” & kyo relaxed & laughingly gives her her wallet back. While he goes to bring the wallet, tohru instead of thinking “ oh nearly lost mom!” is musing over the fact that “it’s strange that kyo can make me happy or sad with one word only”. Subtly indicating that tohru is replacing her mom with kyo as part of growing up from the child she was to the woman she will be.

Tohru calling kyo “mysterious”, subtly explains that tohru is in the uncertain phase of understanding her feelings as a woman & hence, pave the path for upcoming trauma exploration & psychological depth.

The entire scene in the manga is depicted to convey different layers: romance, upcoming growth, & unexplored traumatic issues of abandonment, grief, & human weakness. “ Accepting human Weakness & change” IS the manga’s vision.

In the anime, the fractured picture worked simply becuz no issues of any traumatic experiences with tohru were ever hinted. Nothing abt tohru being a young woman moving away from a traumatic childhood was ever implied beside the weakly sharply cut & forgotten few scenes of her mysteriously going “ im okay” while remembering her dad’s shrine. Was there ever anything abt replacing her mom with kyo? Nope!. Was there anything abt tohru reluctance of loving kyo? Nope! to fix that, let’s shock the audience with empty photo frame! It’ll make the viewers confused & if we play the climax right & give tohru a tearjerker speech confronting akito, all is good. It worked in the anime as it served the purpose it was created for: shock value & drama. ppl bought it. But in the long run, it cemented tohru as the “savior angel” never the “ weak human”. But not many will have issues with that. Having yuki with his impressive story of growth & kyo with his shocking story of pain is enough to distract from the rest. The director must think: What does the audience want?

a woman who’d save the prince with her motherly care?“ Done!”.

a woman who’d love the monster? “ Done !”. 

a woman who has her own deep story? no one will miss that~ skip!

-Yuki’s next stage of growth: Friends:

I like how smoother the scene played here. Yes, yuki thinks back to his gratitude to tohru, but it plays subtly & more emphasis is on his friendship with kakeru. No added scene of him waving back to tohru after kakeru which brought the focus back to mom-tohru again. No. Here is way less shoved in your throat. Yuki says how he felt in the moment, moved on to the next stage, thought abt his life & choives, moved on to school. Clear lines that makes yuki more dynamic & way less “ living in his head” character.

Side Notes:

The manga’s art is pretty but expressive! I was afraid it’ll have that weird eyes bigger than the moon & too much sparkles & bubbles like the usual old shojo manga art!

Yuki is way more expressive than the anime & less pretty & sparkly! I welcome this with flowers & songs! lol.

Tohru has “low” pigtails instead of the child-like high pigtails! YES! it is crazy that this trivial change adds so much to tohru’s presentation to the viewers’ eyes. In real life no big deal but in an artistic medium such choices send subliminal messages to viewers minds, that’s why artists spend a lot of time choosing their characters default appearance. It means a lot for the character’s overall path & sends messages. High child-like pigtails: make her look like innocent & naive child since viewers usually associate such hair do with children & toddlers. Low pigtails: are cute girly style that we associate with teenagers & young adult women, it’s practical & cute.

Kyo’s looks as youthful & handsome as the anime but less angry, annoyed & more versatile in his expression! It always bothered me that the anime just go with kyo’s default frowned face, hands in pocket looks unless he should express a key emotion. Also, kyo without an undershirt in his uniform! interesting change from the anime.

I missed kyo’s two buddies! T_T. Why they weren’t in the anime’s finale.. could’ve at least put them in the underwhelming graduation ceremony ~

I really appreciate that yuki’s fanclub are one page, less annoying.

That awkward moment when a manga panel drawn by one person can depict a crowded city more than an anime with a huge team. Like the anime didn’t even need to zoom out for a huge wide shot that showcase its weakness in depicting a crowded city. If you can’t draw that, just zoom in to lessen the effect of emptiness. kyoto isn't a deserted area especially not during a school trip!

The teachers checking on the sneaking vs sleeping students scene is a welcoming sight! XDDD

Hana met kakeru before? saw him & tohru together? weird!!

Kakeru is more focused on tohru here.

I really love the photos taken for everybody. It indicates real good time! Hana eating, yuki around girls, arisa annoyed, kyo teased with playing card: did the play “rich man poor man” again? XD

I’m starting to love yuki more in the manga than the anime!

Kyo having short inner thought abt not being able to tell tohru a girl confessed to him & deciding to say “ none of ur business” is doing wonders to the scene!!! it makes him less mean to tohru & more balanced character. I mean I guessed so in the anime, but what could've prevented making the VA say this short line of inner thought?! Yuki’s VA says essays & essays in nearly every ep abt nearly every character?!.

I liked the way kyo held tohru’s hands when he turned to her, the way he held her hand in the anime is a bit weird. lol. Also, in this scene, tender gentle kyo is so well-done both in the anime & manga. The manga wins for the zoom in & focus on emotions, tho.

Chris: is part of this story idea I had that involved immortal people. She was an assassin sleeper agent who didn’t know it and she ends up living with/ befriending a bunch of immortals and then there’s the drama of her later having to kill them. In the begining she’s really emotionless and blank since she has no memories, but by the end she’s ridiculously in love and has a family so alskdjf;asl

Ezra: this bb boy is from Reclaim actually, so my alien/ angel/ immortal phase that I ^^^^evidently never REALLY grew out of XD. He’s a prince with a massively fucked up backstory and mommy issues, but his mom’s murder gets pinned on him so he has to “Reclaim” the throne (aha). He’s very high strung, wickedly smart, and basically raised his two younger siblings. He’s also kind of a massive asshole XD. 

Ash: she’s from Just South of Casual!! The main character actually. She’s very problematic and at the beginning of the story recovering from a suicide attempt. She’s very non-challant and callous about everything (literally she starts the book by calling people babies for being upset that the worlds ending) but by the end she’s got bffs and a boyfriend and is just overall in a much better place.

50. Weirdest story idea you’ve ever had.

Ok this was actually the hardest one to come up with adkjf;ldf I managed to narrow it down to 2 because kajds;fljasdjl I WRITE WIERD OK?? XDD

Murderous: this one was mostly weird because of the style I was trying to write in, but it was about this guy and girl who try to hook up at a wedding, get the wrong room, accidentally kill the actual owner, and cover it up. 5 years later the guy calls the girl and says he wants to come clean, she races over to try and convince him NOT to, and finds out he’s dying from cancer. They end up becoming friends again, but then the guy finds out who she is, realizes “oh no” and dies without coming clean. The girl then confesses to the murder after, and the story is told from the POV of her best friend who’s getting told this for the first time while girl is in prison and is REMARKABLY bitchy that she was never filled in. 

The Likelihood of Living: this one’s weird because of the mc, Dye. The book was a zombie apocalypse story--Dye wakes up immune and invisible to zombies and also with a really weird addiction to pineapple. He’s also like, really not sane at all and very good at pissing people off but he’s on good terms with the local war-lord Devito (Dye’s the one telling the story so YES like Danny Devito )))):<)  because he hoarded a bunch of pineapple scented hair gel and Devito’s obsessed with it. Eventually tho, Dye pisses him off enough that D decides he wants Dye dead so he sends his top 2 enforcers after him. They drag him back but end up actually coming to like him and yeah, they escape.

Thoughts on ep5 & 6

So...I just watched the episodes on YouTube... Damn I'm so late 😂 I've got things going on so, I'm not in the mood to watch until today...

Okay, it was great ! I like it :DDD there's a few things I want to talk about :

The kids laughing and ridiculing(?) Ali. I actually love this scene because this is the reality. In Malaysia, many people face this situation. Failing and getting laughed at. That's why, we have so many shy kids and adults. And this also makes the kids think, " I don't want to try this, if I fail, it would be super embarrassing" and this lead to many kids does not want/too lazy/afraid of trying. Guess what happen then? The kid who tries hard will be laughed at then. I won't compare to other countries since I don't really know about the others o.o

About Rudy. I don't know either I like him or not 😂 He's a jerk but he seems...tsundere? But, one thing I love is he's a responsible person. He puts the mission as his priority. He's cool tho

It's sad that Ali and his father is not so close :( but at least Ali still respect and love his father. Cause you know, kids who don't receive much love from family, tends to be close to their friends. And they become rude to their parents. But then, Ali is verbally(?) bullied in school so, basically he's alone :( (good grief there's comot and Viktor)

Haha I'm sorry if I was a bit to intense on my post🤣💜 I guess one of the reasons why I'm so passionate about my dislike of Pudding is because I joined the OP fandom around the time of her villain reveal in the manga, and me and my friends/the whole OP fandom on Tumblr were absolutely vivid about it XD I still remember the countless evil!Pudding fanarts, theories about her possibly manipulating Big Mom with her Devil Fruit and being the secret puppeteer of the Yonko crew, not to mention that her character really seemed like the perfect opportunity to challenge Sanji's views on how women 'are always fragile with pure tears and need his protection'. Yooo I recall someone even started a post about a possible Pudding vs Sanji fight situation and we were all losing our shit about it although it was super unrealistic to happen, even back then XDDD One Piece was even trending because of the chapter, the picture of Sanji crying while failing to light his cigarette was everywhere we were all collectively losing our marbles auqbdbw

I still remember when me and my friend praised Oda in dm's for subverting our expectations, how he was being so self-aware and smart for deconstructing his arguably most overused trope to hit us with this intense and insanely well timed villain reveal- damn, it sure was something🤣

And then, when the wedding happened,,, it was like a cultural reset. Scratch noise and freeze frame. Ice Age 5: Collision Course. It was that moment when Patrick excitedly ran out of the store to have fun but Spongebob yelled "NO WAIT PATRICK!" and he completely froze in place, face filled with uncertainity of the future and regret.

Posts praising Oda for Pudding were deleted and replaced with memes about female characters being unable to be pretty + evil. The OP fandom was a soap opera and we were living the good life XD

You're definitely right tho, it's also a lesson learned- if you don't get your hopes up too much in the first place, you're less likely to end up so disappointed :'D

About Hiyori- I really hope her relationship with Zoro will just remain some "other characters think they're a thing when they're actually not" kinda joke??? Idk I felt seriously bad for mosshead in the anime OMG he looked so confused and uncomfortable whenever Hiyori threw herself at him aqudjwnw like girl give the guy some space please XD

Rip the anime truly turned Hiyori into a monstrosity :'D I don't remember most of her manga presence and how it differs from the anime tbh because the pacing was pretty different and unlike in the episodes Oda didn't spend eternities on a single scene... I still laugh when I think back to the sumo fight in the anime and how Luffy and that yokozuna guy spend a whole ass minute franctically waving their arms trying not to fall out of the ring pfff

Huhu and I love the headcanon of Hiyori being a lesbian, and Denjiro making sure she never has to deal with dudes being all grabby or disgusting towards her in private. Also would have been cool if he taught her to defend herself, especially considering the 'field' she's working in but oh well- It would be funny if she got to meet Hancock and Pudding and they all collectively come to the conclusion that they're actually gay and over-exagerrating their 'crushes' on the Monster Trio 'cause they don't know how to deal with people being real nice to them and immediately jump onto this weird 'omg guy is not a douche to me does this mean we're in love?!?!' train many lesbians experience before they realize that they don't like guys XD

Pudding's case is fascinating - because this is an example of a WELL written subplot, but Pudding's design doesn't match the given backstory AT ALL. Would it make sense for a young girl from abusive family who spent her whole life mocked by mother and siblings for her appearance and developing a complex because of it to turn sides because someone finally treated her like a human being and said something nice to her? Of course! (part 1)

Oh boy this is gonna be a bit long I'm sorry xD

I feel like I should preface this by saying that Pudding is one of my absolute least favorite characters in OP for many reasons, but since most of them don't have anything to do with the topic at hand I'll try to keep myself from straying too much :'D

But before I get to the issue with her design, I have to say this: although the premise of Pudding's subplot makes sense and fits in with the overall theme of domestic abuse present throughout WCI, the execution of her character is,,,, not really something I'd call very well-written, to be honest😅?

Her insecurities or inner hurt is not explored beyond the flashback/compliment, which was also not build up at all, there isn't another significant moment where she reflects more on how Sanji's treatment of her contrasts with what she previously faced, or even the many parallels between them and how they both stem from abusive households yet choose to deal with their inner pain in different ways is never explored.

I always thought it was kind of a waste that you have an arc supposedly centered around Sanji being the 'kindest', yet his kindness didn't really seem to inspire her to change her view on herself. Which, if I'll be honest, was what I was expecting after Pudding broke down- that she would get to have a genuine talk with Sanji, demonstrate her initial conflicted feelings at his comment because she was never complimented before, and go through some self-reflection and exploration by really looking at their stories of abuse and how that molded her into who she is now. But... naga. She is turned into somewhat of a joke and everything her character did before is pushed aside and not adressed again.

With the premise Oda set up there could have been done so much more with her, but in my eyes, Pudding is one of the most disappointing characters he has written post-TS and a good example of unused potential.

She had great potential as a villain too, and I won't lie, I was incredibly disappointed when she was revealed to be just another 'tragic' female character, but even then her 'redemption' or whatever it was that happened with her could have been handled so much better and just feels like a repetition of what we've already seen in this, and even previous arcs: aka, woman has man call out her problems/take care of her problems, she has a realization, her character development is done.

As far as princesses go her character breaks out of the mold a little, admittably, yet her struggles are barely explored, and given how much excitement there was for her to be an actually unexpected female villain after her betrayal of Luffy and Sanji, her suddenly breaking down crying and having that flashback felt incredibly flat and honestly,,,, kinda forced, after everything that happened? Also why did Oda first set up a vague connection between her and Lola, their shared desire of being free, but then,,,, completely switched to making her character all about being insecure about her physical appearance instead? Especially when we get Katakuri later and his position/struggles within the family are, imo, explored a lot more than Pudding's, even though she's had far more screentime and is arguably more important to BM's overall cause.

Eeeeeeeeehhh but I'm ranting again lol there is much to be said about her character, but on how that ties in with her design:

I completely agree on that, Pudding looking the way she does and being referred to as a 'monster' honestly felt like a fucking slap in the face xD I mean even some of her weird '100% human' siblings (Perospero, Opera, whatever the hell Kato is-) look more like monsters than she does. Also in her flashback Pudding was only shown to be bullied by her mother and citizens- (none of her siblings were shown to be involved, they generally seem to turn more of a blind eye when it comes to the abuse from their mother? Which is just as bad tho) but I kept wondering, "which citizen in their right mind would bully the daughter of a fucking Yonko, especially when there are so many other freaky things walking around in Tottoland xD?"

It's blowing my mind and honestly made her backstory even less believable.

The other examples you mentioned are all things I wholeheartedly agree with as well- hhhh Hancock's overplayed 'crush' on Luffy is still something that haunts me whenever it's brought up, the same goes for the unfortunate treatment of Tashigi rip

I absolutely think that Oda is partly influenced by editors, and of course when it comes to female characters, fanservice for future merch must play a big role as well- yet at the same time I can't help but wonder, when every women looks almost identical to the next one, are fans really gonna be that excited about new merch anymore...?

I mean look at this and tell me Robin and Hancock don't look the exact damn same-

My worst issue with how Oda writes women lately is that you can sometimes see what he's going for, what he could be doing, but he hardly carries through anymore and instead reverts to over-used tropes. I was really expecting Komurasaki to be this hardboiled samurai daughter who doesn't take shit from anyone and proudly stands her ground, but then he turned her around and gave us Hiyori, whose interactions with Zoro I can barely watch,,,, and let's not even talk about Toki,,,,

Kiku is like the only female character I care for in Wano so far.

Man I just wish we could have something like Otohime, Bellemere, or pre-TS Robin again :( Who were allowed to be actual characters-

Or a case like Connis, who was first introduced as a maiden-like character but then began questioning what was happening on Skypeia and ultimately had this badass bazooka moment while denouncing Enel hhhh---

Well, I’d never fallen in love before and Wade’s the only guy I’ve fallen in love with and still going strong nao (and I intend to keep it that way :3) If I had to describe how I fell in love with him tho…

There were a lot of times I felt like what I’m feeling for him was different but the biggest giveaway that slapped my face was at my cousin’s and sister’s birthday. My mom wasn’t around so I took the opportunity to hide in my cousin’s bedroom to chat with him on Tumblr (it’s an everyday thing at this point XDDD)

I took a bit long to reply to him and I apologized with all the exaggerated emojis I use XDDD Then he teased me and said “It’s okay. I know how unimportant I am >

“Nope. I know the hierarchy. Spaghetti is more important than me” By then I thought “omg. This guy is nuts XDDDD” and it struck me how much he wanted to spend time with me and how much he’d set aside time just to talk to me. He added that it was fine if I was gone a bit and he could wait. At this point, my heart melted for him because I felt that he did miss me from being gone so I offered him a virtual hug. And he just willingly took it :3

His description for it was *pulls to a hug* or something like that and at that point, I was very utterly flustered, head over heels, stomach filled with butterflies, and I knew I was screwed owo

And that was how I became crazy, kids XDDD

I want to inspire, create, and build. I want to leave a mark on this world that people will look at what I’ve done and think to themselves, “Yeah! If this person can do it, I can get through this!!”. I don’t care if I have a title or if my name is known. Pish-posh. I just want to create things that people will look to and get inspired by.

who is more likely to hurt the other?

-- more than likely Dice. as much as i hate to say it. Dice is definitely a nice guy, but he can really lose it and hurt others by accident (but once he realizes what hes done, he will apologize for like, hours to weeks on end. (this is why he always has peppermint in his mouth around others.)

who is emotionally stronger?

-- that... can depend. Dice is basically almost emotionless a lot of the time for safety reasons. but it can switch from 0 to 100 in a millisecond for him, his mind is, well, kinda broken i guess you could say haha. so its hard to say, i mean, the emotionless part is mainly the peppermint talking, otherwise his emotions pretty much run wild. Peppermint i could guess could get rather emotional seeing as he has some past things going on that i myself (and maybe Dice as well) do not know about.who is physically stronger?-- Dice. i’m not gonna lie hes pretty strong, even if his arms are all cut up from cutting himself due to his suffering thing hes got going on. He may or may not have knocked some teeth out with his strength.who is more likely to break a bone? 

-- depends on if your talking about the character breaking someone’s bone or breaking their own bones. Dice can break someone’s bones if he wanted through constant beating and or bending the specific limb. i’m sure hes done it once when he was full on insane. haha.as for breaking their own bones, probably Peppermint. now, i’m not saying Peppermint isn’t careful, or that he is clumsy or something, just a little more likely than Dice. i see them as both being very careful people, er, monsters.who knows best what to say to upset the other? -- Possibly Peppermint? i mean, i don’t think Dice would be able to actually being to purposefully do that. more than likely on accident. but i don’t really think they would say anything to upset each other purposefully. (although, once Dice Confesses about his past, that info can be used to make Dice highly upset ahah.)who is most likely to apologize first after an argument? -- this legit has Dice’s name on it. he DOES NOT want to upset or get into arguments with Peppermint. he loves him too much and does not want to lose him. so yes, hes probably gonna apologize like 30 seconds after the argument. lol.who treats who’s wounds more often? -- UM HAHAHAHA WELL... Dice isn't really one to get hurt unless he went and got into a fight. this of course does not count his constant self harm. Peppermint doesn't know about that. i don’t think he wants Peppermint to know so hes not worry about Dice. plus Dice might be stubborn about being bandaged up, he would probably feel embarrassed.so probably Dice treating more of Peppermints wounds? (if he gets any??)who is in constant need of comfort? -- BOTH OF THEM?? LIKE?? THESE POOR CHILDREN NEED THE COMFORT THEY BOTH COMFORT EACH OTHER LOTS I’M SURE.who gets more jealous? -- i mean, i see them as both getting jealous when it comes to the other?? i feel like Peppermint would but i could be wrong.all i gotta say for Dice-- don’t touch (unless its a simple hug, he understands those) or flirt with his bae unless you want people to find your body (or in a monster’s case, dust) scattered around the ground.who’s most likely to walk out on the other? -- Peppermint. i only say this because Dice doesn't want to at all walk out on Peppermint no matter the reason. even if Peppermint were to cheat on him (hypothetically), he still wouldn’t. he would be upset (hey there you go) but he would not walk out.who will propose? -- Dice. no doubt about it.who has the most difficult parents?-- WELL IF WERE TALKING ABOUT CREATORS ID SAY PEPPERMINTas for actual Parents in canon, well, i don’t know anything about Peppermint’s canon parents.as for Dice, well, i guess you could say they were difficult. his mom left the family (which also cut half the income) causing Gaster (Dadster lol) to stay at the lab and work constantly. luckily his mom stayed long enough and cared enough to teach Dice about taking care of the house and how to cook, sew, etc. his mother is why hes such a neat freak. that and he had to care for Atticus for almost all of Atticus’s life.who initiates hand-holding when they’re out in public? -- pEPPERMINT LOL. (he didn't constantly do it, he felt like he would annoy everyone.) but even now a days he cant help but at least chuckle a little if a pun is made. but he definitely doesn't make them very much anymore. its pretty rare actually. and he certainly would slap anyone.i’m not sure if Peppermint makes puns or jokes, but i highly doubt he would slap anyone after making one.who is more streetwise?-- Dice Definitely. he literally is homeless he knows everything out there.who is more wise?-- Peppermint. QUESTION 1. What is your favorite scene in the comic so far and why?

i wonder if hell learn to be a telepath from the wood elves. laugh in the face of his sacrifice cause he found a loophole to get around it

I think it'll go that way since they introduced it as something he needs to learn. Either that or he'll break the seal on him and be able to talk again. Although the convenience of the wood elves knowing thought magic and wanting to teach it to him leads me to think that'll be pursued despite his current failure of their test

It was a bit hard to get his character when he had nothing he could say. I'm not sure about delaying the voice loss and magic, but maybe if he'd been able to think out loud more?

Like, his character as established was kind of carefree from how he acted and cared about animals but tortured in terms of having no friends and living on stolen food.

My biggest art gripe was the inconsistency in Oops' design, particularly in the beginning

it was kind of all over the place

and they call him a kid but he didn't really look like a kid in the beginning
