A juvinile male has washed up in Eshaness. Very sad for the Northern Isles pod to lose a young pod member.
The cause of death is currently unknown.

Via Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary: On Thursday we were called out to find a second dead killer whale washed up on Shetland's coastline this year. In January we went to a female with a prolapsed uterus on the uninhabited isle of Linga on the westside. This week we came across this juvenile male in Eshaness, washed a long way up the banks by Storm Caroline a week earlier. Very sad, as it was one of Shetland's young orcas, and there aren't many young orcas in Europe, let alone the UK. We took samples for Scottish Marine Animal Strandings Scheme who are hoping to carry out a full autopsy to establish the cause of death. Thank goodness we were blessed with a "day atween wadders" with the sun shining, flat calm, two herons in the bay as well as grey seals mating right in front of us, not to mention rainbows! Magical. But no one screamed "the wild kills!!!!1!!!1" like the tendency to scream "captivity kills!!!!!" whenever a captive orca passes away.

Efforts to gently herd a young male pilot whale into open waters will continue on Wednesday after a number of boat owners volunteered their service. The mammal has become trapped in Vidlin Voe, in Shetland, over the last two days unable to find its way out.
On Tuesday night two sea kayakers were able to encourage the animal away from a shallow beach, but it has now become disorientated in the nearby marina where it reportedly had beached for a short time on the slipway.
The rescue efforts are coordinated by the Scottish Natural Heritage office in Lerwick, as well as Pete and Jan Bevington of Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary who are at the scene, but without a mobile phone signal.
Karen Hall of SNH said on Wednesday morning that they had a number of boats willing to help but more "smaller boats" were needed. She said that pilot whales were "fickle" in their behaviour and great care was needed to encourage the animal back to sea.
"As long as it is in the water there is a chance," she said.
Anyone willing to help is asked to get in touch with her at the SNH on 01595 693345. Any rescue attempt should be coordinated with SNH and Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary.

A pilot whale which stranded at Basta Voe in Yell a week after it was rescued from Vidlin has died. It passed away naturally on Thursday and a necropsy will take place on Friday by Andrew Brownlow of Scottish Marine Animal Stranding Scheme to determine its cause of death.
The whale was first spotted in Vidlin on 17 July close to salmon cages by Scottish Sea Farms staff and Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary's Jan and Pete Bevington were asked to help. Two days later it was in danger of stranding and after the whale ended up being scared into Vidlin marina by a motorboat, it was eventually herded out into the mouth of the voe with the help of locals.
The pilot whale didn't show any signs of wanting to leave the voe after being reflected on Thursday afternoon. Photo: Hillswick Wildlife SanctuaryHowever, it was spotted again off Yell on Tuesday and it was circling near to the head of Basta Voe on Wednesday. The Bevingtons found the whale after it had beached itself and while they managed to refloat it, it became stranded again as it was unable to swim.
Attempts were made on Thursday to find a vet to euthanise the whale, but it died naturally before anyone could attend. Jan Bevington said: "We were very sad to see the whale we rescued from Vidlin Voe back circling close to shore in Basta Voe this week.
"When it stranded we decided we should give it another chance as it appeared to be strong enough, and may have just been confused in the shallows. However when we got it into deep enough water to swim and it showed no sign of wanting to leave the voe, we decided to leave it and stayed with it while it died. We're looking forward to the results of the necropsy to determine the cause of death."

A young pilot whale that had become trapped in Vidlin Voe, in Shetland, over the last two days was successfully herded out of the inlet on Wednesday morning.  However, the mammal was last seen near a beach at Lunna – giving rise to fear that the whale continued to be disorientated. Pete Bevington of Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary said it was still unclear whether the rescue attempt had been entirely successful.
Bevington praised local lads James Johnson, Sam Nicolson and Paul Hunter describing their help in encouraging the whale out of the marina as "invaluable". After attempts to help the animal on Tuesday evening were unsuccessful, marred by one boat owner repeatedly encircling the cetacean, wildlife volunteers had mustered support from a number of boat owners to give it another go.
With the help of two RIBs (rigid inflatable boats) belonging to Lerwick port controller Ryan Leith and Bigton man Ian White, as well as the Vidlin yoal crewed by the three local lads, the team eventually managed to herd the pilot whale out of the constraints of the marina and slowly into more open water.
Bevington said once the whale had passed the ferry terminal it was as though the animal started to get back its bearing and began to swim more freely. It started moving faster and faster, past the salmon farm, and to the head of the voe until it couldn't be seen anymore. Believing their mission had been successful the two RIBs returned to the Vidlin marina.
However, later the same day the pilot whale, which is believed to have become separated from its pod, was seen in the water just 50 metres off the beach near the Lunna kirk. Bevington said the advice they were receiving was that the whale was either just catching its breath before moving on, or continued to stay in the area as it had lost its group of animals.
Either way it was a matter of keeping a watching brief on the animal: "We feel very happy that we managed to get it out of the marina and past the salmon farm," he added. "I think we have done the best we could in the circumstances."

The Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary were able to make it out to the deceased orca on the Isle of Linga. I won’t share any further photos as the body took a beating before its stranding and is not in as good condition as first thought.
No cause of death or identity is known at this time but the body has been confirmed female as its uterus is outside its body. It’s teeth look worn (Indicator of Type 1 North Atlantic) but it is hard to make out from the photos.
Update: She was 5.2 metres in length. Source
