Out of this world. (synopsis)"Kirie (Eriko Hatsune) and Shuichi (Fhi Fan) are friends in a small town who notice that Shuichi's father, Toshio (Ren Ôsugi), has become utterly obsessed with snails, videotaping them in his garden and gathering items that resemble the spiral patterns on their shells. Kirie sees spirals elsewhere, too, even in the way people dress and comport their bodies. When the curiosities turn to tragedies, Shuichi wants to escape to Tokyo, but Kirie is determined to stay and figure out what is going on."

i don’t think either of these is great in its own. Uzumaki rips until it very abruptly and suddenly ends. Night Swim is goofy but falls victim to a weak premise and bad execution.

it can’t be understated how much style Uzumaki has, for better and worse, compared to how bland Night Swim is, but it’s traded for a fully complete narrative.

evil is primordial and lives in the water. it reaches out and preys upon our basic drives. it pulls in the weak, the masculine, and the vein, and promises the completion of the cycle. small towns with strange ponds. fathers lost in their obsessions. nosy neighbors and their casual cruel gossip. children at a loss to do anything but bear witness. the smoke that coils under the surface.

anyway. next up, likely The Wicker Man.
