Semimetal-induced covalency achieves high-efficiency electrocatalysis for platinum intermetallic compounds
Compared with other types of batteries, proton exchange membrane fuel cells have the advantages of high discharge power and no pollution, which is also an important carrier for hydrogen energy conversion and utilization. Platinum intermetallic compounds play an important role as electrocatalysts in a series of energy and environmental technologies such as proton exchange membrane fuel cells. However, the process for synthesis of platinum intermetallic compounds needs to be reorganized into ordered Pt–M metal bonds driven by high temperature (~600°C), which usually has great side effects on the structure of the catalyst, such as the uneven distribution of size, morphology, composition and structure, which further affects the performance of the catalyst and batteries. In response to this challenge, Professor Changzheng Wu's group at the University of Science and Technology of China introduced semimetal atoms, such as Ge, Sb, Te into the synthesis process of platinum-based intermetallic compounds. The research is published in the journal National Science Review.

In the wake of the 6th Andurian War, the Strategios of the Capellan Confederation Armed Forces determined that there was a need for a new, low cost light mech to serve as a forward observer and harassment unit in their augmented companies. While the venerable Raven remained in service, its relatively low speed and expensive suite of electronics lead to a number of costly losses during the conquest of Wallacia. To that end, specifications for a new scout were sent out for bids- the new mech had to be cheap, difficult for Free Worlds League precision energy weapons to engage with, and capable of engaging and providing support for indirect fire elements of the CCAF at a variety of ranges. Unusually, despite Hellespont Industrials, the Confederation's more seasoned light manufacturer, submitting a bid in the form of the Sunfire, Ceres Metals Industries won the contract. Their design, initially named Project GOSSAMER, was delayed several times due to production shortfalls and the discovery of a Federated Suns spy ring operating at Ceres' design bureau. Eventually the mech began full production in 3145 as the Moth.
An outwardly radical design, Ceres managed to reduce the cost of their bid significantly through the use of a number of off the shelf parts and existing research prototypes. The mech's engine was a GM 180 extralight fusion power plant, originally designed for a prototype Vindicator before the VND-4L project opted for a larger 225 power plant instead, allowing the 30 ton mech to achieve ground speeds of up to 97 kph. While this speed was deemed unacceptable for the task at hand, the mech's principle designer, Dr. Oxana Ufimtsev, opted to equip the mech with a battery of Anderson jump jets and used a novel delta design for the main hull of the mech, with very low profile arms and wide, integrated control surfaces to give the mech an unusually high glide coefficient. Together, these systems allow the Moth to leap distances similar to those achievable by the Spider, despite the mech's far less powerful engine. The cost of this innovative design is a frame with extremely cumbersome access points and systems not immediately intuitive to most mechtechs, leading to increased maintenance costs and repair times. When deployed in augmented formations alongside aerospace assets, technicians are commonly cross trained on both the unit's fighters and Moths, as the two repair schedules have been found to be similar.
The production model MTH-9L Moth uses a Moscovia light PPC as its main armament, supported by a pair of Ceres Arms model JX small pulse lasers mounted in the two weapons nacels that comprise the design's arms. Additionally, the mech carries a Diverse Optics ER small laser in the left arm and an Apple Churchill TAG system in the left, imported from Hellespont's Sian facility. Clad in 6 tons of Ceres mk III Stealth Armor, the Moth is easily capable of withstanding light fire from enemy mechs while confounding longer range sensor returns. Unfortunately, to make room for the light PPC, Ceres opted to reduce the size and ammenities of the mech's cockpit, resulting in complaints from pilots assigned to the machine for long scouting patrols.
In combat, Moths are most typically used as long range harassment units, using their stealth armor and long jump range to maintain evade enemy fire as they opportunistically engage with their TAG and light PPC. As the fight progresses, some pilots may choose to engage in more active combat, allowing the indirect elements they're supporting to remove the majority of a target'a armor before attempting to destroy vulnerable exposed components with their small lasers
The first recorded combat involving a Moth occurred on Brisbane between elements of the First Victoria Rangers and a raiding force of the Concordat Commandos. Captain Curtis Bao deployed a lance of Moths to waylay the advance of a Taurian armored colum and allow for his own heavy units and combat vehicles to position themselves in foothills east of the TDF landing site. The light mechs caught the tank company and their mech escorts by surprise, outflanking the vehicles and engaging into their weaker side armor at long range with their PPCs while painting targets for Bao's LRM carriers and Thunderbolts. Eventually, the Commandos' mechs rallied and began to engage the stealthy light lance, forcing them to withdraw, however the action blunted the Taurian advance and allowed time for the Victoria Rangers to mount a successful defense of Brisbane's capital, Badwater. The surviving Moths then saw use as city fighters, their jumping capabilities allowing them to manuever easily though the urban fabric of Badwater while their X-pulse lasers let them to brutally engage Taurian infantry.
As a new design, very few variants or operators outside the Confederation have yet to be spotted. Beyond the CCAF, a few Capellan aligned mercenary commands have been allowed to officially purchase small numbers of the design, while the allied Magistracy of Canopus has managed to acquire a number of lances of the mech through unknown sources.
While their infiltration was discovered and rooted out before the full design was finalized, MIIO operatives did manage to steal plans for the early prototypes of the Moth, which the New Avalon Institute of Science used as a test bed for re-engineered laser designs and new SRM munitions. A small production run of the design, similar but without the Capellan stealth armor, was produced by Corean Enterprises at their Augusta plant, but the AFFS appears to have abandoned adding the mech to its TO&E.
Finally, several examples of the Moth were captured by forces loyal to Alaric Ward's Star League during fighting on New Earth. The Jade Falcon remnant present immediately saw use in the design as a heavier alternative to their light Ion Sparrows. A Clantech refit of the mech has been spotted using an ER large laser in place of the PPC and a quartet of small pulse lasers in the weapons nacels.

And then it happened. He said, “Get out of my house,” his voice seething with anger. I replied, “Gladly.” But the truth is, fear gripped me. The kind of fear that paralyzes when someone else’s fury becomes a tangible force, pushing you to flee. I’ve learned over time that people who reach that level of rage don’t just calm down—they escalate. They punish, scream, bully. And I know better now. It’s safer to distance myself from it, to avoid the storm.
I rushed to gather the essentials: my coat, my purse, and a phone charger—just the plug, no wall charger. A mistake, but I was out of time. I had to leave. I grabbed the keys and stumbled out the door. My heart was pounding as I sat in the car, frantically searching for the keys I had just grabbed. Then, I started driving. Tears streamed down my face, and I kept going, not knowing where I was headed—just away.
I pulled over in a quiet neighborhood, gripping the steering wheel tightly. A metro bus turned the corner, and I wondered briefly if I was parked in the wrong spot. It passed by without incident. Then another bus came minutes later. I blocked him on everything, ensuring no contact. I even wrote something on X, a desperate attempt to reach out—but then deleted it, embarrassed. How was I supposed to rest here? Should I just try to power through and drown it all out with the a/c? Maybe I should take a shower, let the water wash away the tension. Or turn on the TV, let the mindless chatter numb my thoughts.

And then, my phone buzzed—a call from a suspicious yet familiar local number. It wasn’t his number, but I knew it was him. My heart skipped a beat as I stared at the screen, my mind racing.

Tretinoin and a 2% BHA serum.
These 2 are a very powerful combo. I only use BHAs once a week, there are people who use it every single day and it is true that is a lot more gentle compared to other chemical exfoliators but I do not want to overexfoliate my skin or disrupt my skin barrier again like last year (when I would use the highest percentages of Vitamin C, AHA, Retinoids every day) so I make sure I only use it when I really need it. I use Tretinoin for anti-aging purposes only, it does not require a prescription where I live so I can get it at any pharmacy. 0.1% is the highest concentration available on the market and some people purge like crazy but I have been using it for on and off 4 years so my skin is used to it. My skin is far from perfect and sometimes I break out due to hormones, stress or lack of sleep and I need products to improve my skin texture. One of my favorite things is applying my 0.1% Tretinoin on Friday night and on Monday my skin begins flaking, I take my BHA Serum massaging it into my skin and it gets rid of all my dead skin cells and I love how my skin looks smooth and glowy the next days.
Garnier Hyaluronic Aloe Replumping Superserum.
I would never really purchase something from Garnier. However, my aunt was recently diagnosed with preoral dermatitis (it's terrible) and her dermatologist told her to stop using any makeup or skincare so she gave me most of her cosmetics that I have been trying out the past few weeks. This is one of my favorites. Whenever I use a hydrating ingredient I always spritz my face with water first to maximize its benefits and this serum makes my skin feel so much more hydrated and fresh, it has a very calming & pleasant smell, and I sometimes add another layer depending on my skin's needs. It gives me the perfect base before I move on to applying my skin makeup. What makes this serum amazing is that it includes so many different hydrating ingredients - Aloe, Hyaluronic Acid, Glycerin... My skin loves this superserum so I use this one quite often.
Missha A'pieu BB Maker SPF 30/PA++
This is another product that proves to me that Korean makeup products are amazing. The BB creams I've tried from Western brands have been lackluster at best, they never match my skin tone, they look off on me but I bought this in 212 Natural Beige and it is so perfect. It's called 'BB cream' but this product is so high coverage that I would almost call it a foundation. When my order first arrived, I was shocked at how small the product was, I thought I'm gonna finish it in two weeks tops but the thing is you put 1/2 a pea size on the back of your hand and realize you could easily cover your whole face with it. I don't know how that's possible but you really need soooo little, only a teeny tiny amount and it's something I still need to learn, I put a 3/4 pea just to be safe and it always turns out to be way too much. I know someone who works for Missha so I got this product at a heavy discount, I ordered 2 and she sent 4, what a darling and what an amazing excuse to buy more products!
Apple AirPods (3rd Generation).
These were a gift from my mom, my Huawei Freebuds stopped working and I've been complaining about it nonstop so she surprised me with a pair of Airpods 3, she was torn between the 2 and 3 so she gave me the receipt to let me decide. I went in the next day and got them exchanged, and I love them. I can do calls, binge my shows, participate in virtual meetings, listen to podcasts on my way to uni, listen to music for hours on end with no issues and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a pair of good headphones, the battery lasts a long time as well. The headphones may feel weird at the beginning, like they could fall out any second which is why I was hesitant in the beginning but I got used to it, it does not bother me anymore. I also got a cute little case, it's silver stoned and I am not really a bling person but I did not want to get silicone because they stain and rip, I wanted to try something different, so I just went ahead and bought this one, I love how it sparkles and it is pretty much impossible to damage.
A White Long Sleeved Leotard.
I am obsessed with this long sleeved leotard, it is a game changer and I think this is the best purchases I have made this year. It literally solves 90% of all my cloth-related problems. When I go to the dance studio, I throw this on with my black leggings as a base layer, I just have to take off my skirt and I am good to go within seconds. The material is stretchy but very fitted and I love how the fabric feels on my skin, I also how it looks on me and how it emphasizes my slim arms and my small waist. The fabric is very thin but it is not see through so I can wear my cropped wrap tops and all my see through tops over it without looking frumpy. I love a fitted look so I can wear it on its own with a pleated dark navy skirt or a black pencil skirt (my favorite) as well. It is a 10/10 and I have already purchased many more in various colors and this is the type of thing I never knew I needed.

The U.S. government has taken a direct approach when it came to the development of consumer drones. Now, a single Chinese company, DJI, has conquered more than three quarters of the world market, and Washington fears that its drones may be a tool for Chinese espionage in the U.S. heavens.
To avoid a similar error and the alarming national security implications, the U.S. Air Force's Agility Prime program has channeled more than $100 million since 2020 into another promising but unproven innovation: battery-powered aircraft known as eVTOLs for "electric vertical takeoff and landing", which many companies are developing for civilian use as air taxis and cargo transportation.
The military's commitment helped U.S. eVTOL developers raise billions of dollars and made them more likely to survive to fight for an eventual civilian market.
“The involvement of the U.S. Air Force attests that these are real planes – not toys, not flying cars,” said Will Roper, who launched Agility Prime when he served as head of purchasing for the USAF during the Trump administration.
After decades of high development costs for military aircraft, Agility Prime is an experiment to see if the Pentagon can take advantage of advanced, cheaper and ready-to-use commercial technology. The military foresees the use of eVTOLs in utility functions to transport people and cargo away from the airstrips at a lower cost than conventional helicopters. Because they are silent, they can also be useful for placing troops behind enemy lines and conducting rescue operations.
The 15 companies participating in Agility Prime include creators of piloted eVTOLs, such as Joby Aviation and Beta Technologies, and startups that develop cargo drones such as Elroy Air and Talyn. The program provided not only funding, but government testing resources and the potential to earn revenue from military sales before the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) gave the green light to start civil service.

Lawmakers seem to like the program: in the defense appropriations bill passed by Congress on Friday, they gave Agility Prime $50 million more in funding for fiscal 2023 than the $73.9 million the Biden government had requested. However, they denied an order for $3.6 million to rent a handful of eVTOLs during the year for exploratory use, citing a “lack of clear acquisition or field strategy”.
Several companies participating in the program believe that the military will start acquiring their aircraft in 2024. The move to the acquisition would be a major milestone in the Department of Defense, according to Roper, who is currently a board member of Beta Technologies. "It's a different color of money," he said. Before the completion of the allocation bill, AFWERX, the U.S. Air Force technology accelerator that manages Agility Prime, said in a statement that the program “continues to evaluate the acquisition of eVTOL aircraft in Fiscal Year 2023”.
Among the first aircraft acquired is a small Lift Aircraft multicopter called HEXA - single-s seat partially closed on top by a circular structure with 18 rotors. The Lift says that the ship can fly up to 15 miles and carry a maximum of 300 pounds. The military is considering using the HEXA for search and rescue, transporting small loads around bases and emergency response. The company expected some form of acquisition of the U.S. Air Force in 2023, said founder and CEO Matt Chasen.
The HEXA weighs only 430 pounds and its small size means it is relatively affordable. Lift, based in Austin, Texas, offered the first models as recreational vehicles for $500,000. In comparison, Beta Technologies expects its electric aircraft, Alia, which can carry up to 1,250 pounds of cargo or four passengers in a maximum of 200 miles, will cost from $4 million to $5 million.

Other Agility Prime participants say they are progressing to put the aircraft into military service.

Beta, based in Vermont, which aims to market Alia first as a cargo carrier, expects the Air Force to buy the aircraft in 2024, after test operations at the base in 2023. In March, Alia became the first electric aircraft controlled by U.S. Air Force pilots, with manned flight, but with landing and takeoff on a conventional runway. Beta received contracts worth up to US$ 44 million through Agility Prime.
An initial test mission that the U.S. Air Force is considering for electric aircraft is to move equipment and personnel around its test and training areas in the U.S., many of which are in remote areas with uneven roads. The pioneering eVTOL developer, Kitty Hawk, was the first company to conduct an operating year through Agility Prime in 2021. Billionaire investor Larry Page abruptly closed the company in October amid doubts about whether he would be able to bring his autonomous aircraft to market soon.
Roper believes that there will be a healthy civil market for the winners. With Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall supposedly skeptical of eVTOLs, Roper argues that the military needs to recognize that U.S. competition for primacy with China is taking place mainly in commercial technology, so focusing on how much the Pentagon benefits directly from electric aircraft is not the only decisive factor.
“The biggest impact of Agility Prime is that this is an emerging market that will probably be worth a lot in terms of value, in terms of jobs created, in terms of global impact,” Roper said. "It will be a market with a US zip code."
