H. sargenti grows in the coast ranges from Mendocino County south to Santa Barbara County, often on serpentine-derived soils. A particularly notable population is found on Cedar Mountain in eastern Alameda County. The branchlet photographed is from a tree located at Regional Parks Botanic Garden in Tilden Regional Parks near Berkeley, CA
