William Harvey Carney was born in Norfolk City on February 29, 1840 to William and Nancy Ann Carney. His parents were enslaved, though freedom was promised by their owners. Carney grew up a slave. He was secretly taught to read and write by a local minister at the age of 14. Two years later, Carney was working with his father.

William Carney, Sgt. Carney’s father, escaped enslavement after the death of his owner, Mrs. Sarah Ann Twine, in 1857. While traveling north, Carney met William Still in Philadelphia where his life experience was recorded. He continued his travels to New York before settling permanently in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Once there, William Carney worked tirelessly to free his family. His efforts paid off when Sgt. Carney and five other siblings joined their father in New Bedford soon afterward. In 1859, William Carney raised enough money to purchase freedom for his wife Nancy, Sgt. Carney’s mother, from Joseph Carter of Norfolk County, Virginia. 

Sgt. Carney worked odd jobs around New Bedford and considered entering the ministry when he heard the call “for all people” to serve their country. Believing he could best serve God by helping to free his oppressed brothers, Carney joined the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Colored Infantry in February 1863.

Carney entered the regiment as a private but was quickly promoted to sergeant on March 30, 1863. The regiment took part in the July 18, 1863 assault on Fort Wagner, South Carolina. He saved his regiment’s American flag during the battle.  Seeing the regimental flag bearer had fallen, Carney took up the flag and planted it on the Confederate parapet during the attack.  He, already wounded, continued to hold the American flag while the Confederate troops charged. Recognizing the Federal troops had to retreat under fire, Carney struggled back across the battlefield, and returned the flag to the Union lines while being wounded twice more. Sgt. Carney said modestly, "Boys, I only did my duty. The old flag never touched the ground."

Sgt. Carney received the Quincy A. Gillmore Medal of Gallant and Meritorious Award during the war. Years later, Christian Fleetwood approached Carney about using his Medal of Honor for the 1900 Paris Exhibition featuring Civil War African American action. After learning that Carney had not received the Medal of Honor, Christian Fleetwood and Luis Fenollosa Emilio petitioned the War Department to award Carney the Medal of Honor. On May 9, 1900, the War Department bestowed the Medal of Honor on Carney for his gallant service at Fort Wagner during the Civil War. His actions during the battle was the first known action by an African American serviceman that led to a Medal of Honor.

Carney returned to New Bedford after the war. He married Susannah Williams on October 11, 1865 in New Bedford and had one daughter, Clara Heronia. Carney became the first black postal mail carrier for New Bedford in 1869, and the first known black mail carrier for the United States Postal Service. He retired after more than 30 years of service. Carney died in Boston on December 9, 1908 from injuries sustained from an elevator accident at the Massachusetts State House where he was working as a messenger, in the office of the Secretary of State. He is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in New Bedford, Massachusetts.

ORSPVF is a nice ongoing series in the genre i’ve recently started calling “Role Isekai”.  I have more info on the genre here:

For those who don’t know ORSPVF, here’s the jist: Our main character is Bertia, a self-proclaimed “villainess” who is intentionally attempting to drive herself to ruin. When asked about her behavior, Bertia claims that her motive is so that her fiance, the perspective character Cecil, can be happily married to the story’s “true heroine”, Heronia. From what we’ve gathered in the story however, Heronia is far more manipulative and vile than she presents herself to be, something that Bertia seems to be intentionally ignoring to push the story a certain way. Since our perspective comes from Cecil, we don’t know how the game is supposed to go outside of Bertia’s explanations. Bertia’s actions in this story, however makes me think the story could go in a few directions (Note: this is based on the manga, I haven’t read the light novels):

1. The “Bad End” of the Game Story, something that Bertia curiously leaves out in her explanations, could involve Heronia using her charm magic to destroy the nation.

2. Maybe Heronia and Bertia knew each other in their past life; if they knew each other, I’d guess a sibling dynamic, with Bertia being older and Heronia being younger. They could’ve played the game together and, when they crossed over into the next life, Bertia could’ve realized what was happening and decided to prioritize Heronia’s happiness over her own.

3. Bertia is afraid of getting the story off-track. She’s proven several times in the manga that she gets frightened when a story event doesn’t align with what happens in the game. Maybe the reason why Bertia goes along with the story is because the idea of knowing what’s going to happen is the only control she feels like she has over her life.

I also liked that scene! It shows one of the many key differences between the OG Heroina and “Heronia.” While the OG version worked hard to fit into society’s expectations while maintaining a kind personality, “Heronia” feels so entitled to the love interests and the social approval that the OG heroine worked hard to earn simply because she was the main character, she doesn’t even care that she embarrassed herself or even insulted others when they didn’t even deserve it in the first place.

I have a feeling that if I was a character, I'd end up either as the best friend side character who gives advice to the main character. I don't think I'd be the main character for anything, since I don't have anything that's too spectacular about me, nor do I have the want or need to stand out.

Ever Oasis part 20

I decided to take a break from quests in order to go to the Drauk Settlement. I also did some training and leveled up to 17. Nothing else in the Oasis changed.

I started a new day and I had 0 Travelers and 31 Noots

I had to wait for Miura to get back from a training expedition I had set her out on. I think I needed her to go to the Drauk Settlement.

So instead I took out Pami, Carlotta, Sayeed, Evia, Sasha, and Lili to Kalari Woodsea to train them to level 10 like the others.

I came back and I grew a level too, I am now at level 17! Whoo!

It was late again, so I started a new day. I got 1 Traveler coming back and 21 Noots.

My Explorers came back so I changed my party to Miura and Jasper.

I then headed out to Qaar Dunes to Kidung Caves all the way to Kidung Pass.

I noticed that there was a spiderweb on a door, so I used Aqua Gate to go back to the Oasis and switched out Jasper for Sol.

I then returned to Kidung Pass and cut the spiderweb on the door that was in Room 1 on the lower east side.

Room 3: It was a dead end room with a Leapard and 2 Razortooths.

There were Hieroglyphics on the wall to the east. I wonder if they do anything.

I uncovered a pink flower on the lower west side, but I needed the Paraflower ability.

So I used Aqua Gate to go back to the Oasis and switched out Sol for Carlotta.

I then went back to Kidung Pass in Room 3.

I used Carlotta’s Paraflower ability to get up on a platform above the door where I pressed a switch that made a Blue Chest appear. Indie was a Silver Beast Slab.

I then went back to Room 1 all the way to the back where the Sand Tornado was.

 I used Green Gale on it and turned the sand into steps.

The Drauk Warrior that was next to it was happy that she could now go home without worries when she was done training.

I then headed up the stairs through the exit to the north.

I was now in the Drauk Settlement.

Directly to the left was a warp point that I activated for the Drauk Settlement

I went down to the settlement where I was greeted by a Drauk named Amani. I asked her about the Eye of Truth but she only knew what the tales say and I should talk to the Elder.

To the right, I met a Drauk named Heronia that wanted me to hold a Fashion Festival.

Same as the other Settlements, there were Bloom Booths that I couldn’t go into. And a merchant to the right.

I then found the Drauk Elder all the way to the north. I spoke to her and she was uh…mean? She wasn’t enthusiastic to see me and said that I was too green and old the one who wields the Veritas Sword and has traversed the depths of the Great Wakuto Canyon can find the Eye of Truth. Not even the Drauk has met both requirements. But I was determined so the elder said I have to travel past the Spiral Pit to the Great Wakuto Canyon; I then must obtain Star Sand from Beholios and Seven-Color Glass from Jewel Crabs. If I have it I will be able to Synthesize the Veritas Sword. She has little faith in me but I am welcome to try. She then gave me a Cloudy Steal to make the sword.

Esna then popped up and said we have to find the items to make the sword.

I was going to leave, but I was stopped by a Drauk named Kaela. She said that she loves fashion but the Elder doesn’t. The Elder was descended from a long line of fearsome warriors so she views fashion as frivolous and showy. So if I hosted a Fashion Festival, some of them might be able to travel to enjoy it. Kaela then gave me a Fashion Card.

I then used the warp to go back to the Oasis.

I restocked my Bloom Booths.

I then went to the Great Shrine and talked to Esna to host a Novelty Festival.

That’s where I left it for today. It wasn’t much, but going back and forth takes up time. Plus the training I did. I’m glad I got everyone up to level 10, now to aim to get them to level 15, higher if I can.

She’s 27 and is really confusing. 

She’s sensitive but pretends that she’s not, but she really is. Like the slightest comment can make her tear up a bit or put her in a bad mood. 

She speaks English, Korean, and Portuguese. (Her Portuguese is on an intermediate level, but it’s almost enough for her to communicate with the  Bragança family, and she would try to teach herself, but she’s always busy.)

If she says she’s busy, it means: “I’m gonna be too busy protecting Barbara and not allowing her to leave my sight. Sorry, but I can’t afford distractions. 

Don’t ask her her sexuality, because she doesn’t even know. 

She can kick your ass. She can kick her own ass. 

Literally, she has no friends except for Barbara---come befriend her. 

Likes flowers and training and dancing.

If she’s not busy protecting Barbara, she’s either: Training, dancing, sleeping, or looking at flowers. Maybe cooking, if she’s not busy doing one of the other things. 

She has no life outside of being a bodyguard.

Somebody corrupt her (in any way tbh, show her what it’s like to get drunk, surprise me/us) please, I’ll give you love.

She has some secrets that she doesn’t wanna talk about (aka I have angsty ideas on why she shelters herself, I just gotta pick one or two and not try to do all 500 of them.) (*plots can come from this as well!)
