The first time I read Dune I thought-

“Frank Herbert is doing a great job explaining gender variance in science fiction in a time when they did not have the modern vocabulary for gender expression.”

Paul is his father’s son and his mother’s daughter. He’s quite literally bred to have access to knowledge and power only accessible to men or women.

Alternate universe Dune where Paul Atreides is born female but since the Bene Gesserit can't have nice things, their designated Virgin Mary still ends up declaring herself the false messiah/emperor, starts the jihad, and gets the most toxic yuri story ever with Chani.

I'm really tired of seeing lots of people loudly proclaiming that Paul Atreide is the real villain of the story, when clearly he's not.

First of all, there is no fundamentally bad guy and good guy in this story (even if the Arkonnen are the ones who can most be considered as such, and who are clearly bad people). It's a world with a rotten system where everyone ends up fighting for power.

Paul in all this is a tragic hero. Not a villain.

It follows the classic pattern of tragedy with the system of prophecy. But he's definitely not a hero or / and even less a villain.

Paul is above all a tragic hero, that all.

A lot of people compare him to Anakin, but for me it's more of a surface level comparison, as Paul doesn't really succumb to the outright dark side.

Many people will disagree, but that's what I think.

I finished writing the actual first chapter of my fanfic at last! To celebrate, I drew a kind of cover for the first half of the main story. 🥳

My characters for this story, Link (obvi), and his guide/companion Voice! (Plus Dark Beast Ganon in the background because why not? Other than never having drawn an animal like that in my life… 😂)

Zelda can sense the return of danger, and she knows she is the one destined to stop it. She won’t fail. Not with all this wisdom and authority at her fingertips.

Ganondorf can feel the curse creeping up on him, but he’s no closer to finding a way out than when he first learned of it. Yet he knows this hatred that fights to consume him will come for all his people next if he doesn’t stop it.

Link’s brother is missing. Bodyguard to the princess, he disappeared with her after the appearance of the Dark Beast in Gerudo Desert. Now a Voice is calling Link to defeat that Beast to save Hyrule and reunite his family.

Thinking about Paul's final duel again. Thinking again about how, after spending half the movie watching him be a destructive godlike being we're thrown back into seeing him be just...a guy. I *love* that unlike in the book they let him actually get Fucked Up. That instead of him being depicted as heroic or villainous, it's not really played as him being powerful at all. Not a scary, evil destructive person but not a saviour either. Just a hurt, exhausted, lonely guy who's barely an adult. The fact that *that's* the angle a scene like that was filmed from just. hmmmmmmmmm. It Bites My Brain Sometimes.
