When confronted with the question ‘which train journey calls at the most founding members of a football league’, you’d have to expect a battle for the Most Intense Nerd. Rob Lawshaw takes a valiant stab with his 1920/21 Division Three founding members: the Welsh-bound express trains from London also call at Reading, Swindon, Bristol Rovers, Newport, and Swansea. Peak Nerd goes to Mike Meehall Wood, however, whose answer deserves to be read in full, though here’s just a small taste of the incredible research and detail:
“The best shout percentage-wise, if you’ll allow it, is the first year of the DDR Oberliga in 1948. Using a handy map I found from the period, it should have been possible to travel from Zwickau (Horch Zwickau and Meerane) to Potsdam (SV Babelsberg), taking in Altenburg, Leipzig, Dessau and Halle en route, that being seven teams and 50% of the whole league, not to mention a checkpoint or two, given that this is post-war East Germany we’re talking about.”
take a chance on me
Facing liquidation, Hereford United played a full team of triallists during their preseason friendlies against Droylsden and Besiktas in 2014. The phenomenon was improved on by Hyde United FC, who played triallists for three or more times in a row. It got to the point that no one could remember who they were, so they started giving them some pretty familiar names: the starting XI against Altrincham featured  Fidel Castro, Vladimir Lenin, Karl Marx, Leon Trotsky, and Maximilien de Robespierre, while the game against Burnley saw George Michael, Humphrey Bogart, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Clark Gable, Ron Jeremy, Tom Hanks, Patrick Swayze, Anthony Hopkins, and Austin Powers. The game also produced this brilliant tweet: “Corner to Hyde. Patrick Swayze shouts for someone else to take it "Nobody puts baby on corners"“

AARON REED
age: 34.
gender & pronouns: cis male & he/him.
neighborhood: downtown.
occupation: detective.
fc: theo james.
BIOGRAPHY
trigger warnings: none.
If you didn’t work hard for it, you didn’t get it. This was a recurring theme throughout all of Noah Reed’s life. Born into a farming empire— empire being used lightly, really it was a struggle to keep a farm in a family for the last hundred years— having to work for something was the only thing the boy ever knew.
Starting out at a young age, something was always expected of the Reed boy. Whether it was age four, learning to help his mom pick up eggs in the morning, and carrying them back to the house without breaking them. Or age six when he started learning the names of wrenches, so he could hand them to his father when he was working on whatever piece of farm equipment that was so old, it was always falling apart. The first time Noah finally got to do something for himself, was when his father put out the initial investment, with money he did not have to give, to get the boy a pair of show heifers. He was 8, and the tamest set of cows his father could find were a set of Hereford heifers that were nothing but puppy dogs. One turned out to not be great, so they held her back to breed her, and he showed the other one— and showing cattle is where he learned, that you had to work harder than you ever thought you needed to, to get out the most minimal bits of excitement.
Age nine, and the boy started sports. Initially it was just football, or really, as much as a nine year old could play football. But quickly it got competitive. Not for everyone, but Noah seemed to have a natural affinity for it. What started as something fun his father took him off the farm for, turned into practicing every night. Which turned every playful toss of a ball too, grip it a little different and it’ll spin better, which carried him throughout his peewee, and junior high school career to high school, and when the Friday night lights turned on, everything turned different.
Getting to high school in a southern town was like a rite of passage. As soon as you hit freshman year, nothing else mattered. Your life was an accumulation of skills you’d acquired to perform. Up until this point, Noah had all the skills any southern boy was given; the ability to catch a football, the ability to rope a cow, the ability to show a cow, and the ability to spend hours upon hours farming to help his parents make meets end without them having to spend more money. It was essentially a form of slave labor, but none of them had ever thought of it that way.
His freshman year, he did everything any freshman who wanted to be someone did. He tried out for the football team, he tried out for the baseball team, he was in the FFA. No one could ever credit the boy with not trying, because that’s all he ever did. With what he’d learned as a child, he did well— making all the sports teams he’d wanted to. An ever supportive father, abled him with a forever proactive partner, and what else did a boy need besides someone to throw him a ball every time the sun went down and they were done doing whatever needed to be done to that year’s crop.
Moving slowly up into the ranks of his team, getting faster with his catches and throws— all the way down to frankly, running faster, the Reed boy was nothing but exceptional. Under different circumstances, he would have been going to countless camps in the summers, studying abroad to get an edge in his studies, instead however, he spend the summer days harvesting, and helping his dad work on trucks. Some of them were the farm’s some of them were friend’s trucks to help get extra buck to keep something else running. The summer Noah turned fourteen, his dad brought in an old beat up F150. It didn’t run, the bottom was rusted out, and by all accounts, it should have just been junked, but there it sat, growing into the ground with countless other things.
Starting to work on it seemed pointless. But his father insisted, so he did it. Anything to help out. The whole summer turned into to fixing the truck and fixing his 10 yard time, and both things got half done. Through the summer of his 15th year, things started to pick up, he was faster, he had a girlfriend, his football team was winning, not that they’d ever lost but now he was helping them do it. It was weird to be needed, he never thought he’d get there, even though his whole life he was a need, it was different when people his own age were wanting him for other things. Things that weren’t life and death situations, even if it was the life and death of a cow or a plant, or like— well, those things.
The truck was slowly getting finished, and one day, all the parts were replaced, they’d done the paint, they fixed the engine, the rusted out bottom, raised it, put a set of honking tires on it— he was jealous. It was his perfect truck. His dad even asked him what color he would have liked, and at that point, Noah thought his father was just taunting him. The day he turned sixteen, the whole day was about his driving test. He’d spent weeks studying, and the day came and he did nothing less than pass it with flying colors. His mother took him out for a celebratory dinner, and presented him with a nice toy car, you know, as his first car. Then when they got home— the F150 had a bow on it, and his dad tossed him the keys. Two years of hard work, and the thing was his. They hadn’t even taken it for a test-drive yet, and he could hardly wait.
Barreling into junior year with a spot on the Varsity team, a truck he’d built from scratch, and a set of show cows that were nothing but exquisitely bred— a breeding program he’d been working on since he was six, and he couldn’t think of anything else. Except well college, and how he was supposed to be paying for it. The boy applied to every school that took applications, and a chunk of money gone in application fees, he was nothing but hopeful. Realistic about his athletic ability, he might have been good enough for his southern hometown team, but a collegiate team that was good enough to shake a hat at? Maybe not. Pinning his efforts on his grades and cattle.
College acceptances were fun. The big envelopes, some of them shooting out confetti when they opened, all of them congratulating him on his acceptance. Everything was good until he stacked them all up, some of them interested in his football career, some of them more interested in his grade— all of them were too expensive for him to attend. Noah had never really looked the price of attending college, he knew it was expensive, but he never knew just how much. Now looking at the actual prices, he didn’t know what he was going to do. He knew he couldn’t ask his parents, they would try their hardest, but that meant nothing. They couldn’t help him, so he was going to have to help himself. Looking into different ways to pay, he finally decided Auburn might be the place for him. They liked him for football, gave him a scholarship, they also liked him for his grades, another scholarship— but none of it was enough. His parents made just enough money to demote him on the academic assistance, so it was just enough to get him started. The rest came by way of student loans.
His senior year rolled through without a hitch, graduating with honors, being the homecoming king, winning a state championship with a steer he’d bred the year before— it was a storybook ending to living in a storybook town. However the part where he had to move across the country was much harder than he’d ever thought it would be. Leaving his family— his girlfriend, his friends, everyone behind. It was killing him, but he had to do it. There was no other option. No where close to home was giving him as much funding, and the idea of playing football at a D1 school was something he could have only dreamed about, except it didn’t have to be a dream. It was his reality, and nothing else mattered. The boy had tunnel vision, and boy was the view good.
Moving to college was whiplash. It was all hurry up and go, then wait forever. Wait for class to start, wait for practice to start— do everything on your own without someone breathing down your neck to get it done. Everything was on his own time, and it was like it was in slow motion. Going from a small town football team to a big school team was hard. He was fast, and good enough for his hometown, but for Auburn? Not as fast as he was thinking he was. He was slower than all the other guys, not by much, but by just enough to make him realize that maybe he wasn’t enough.
Not able to compete at a collegiate level hit Noah harder than he ever cared to admit, even years later, but if he couldn’t do what he wanted his drive to continue college dropped off. He messed around for awhile before he decided it wasn’t for him. He was only good at school because he had a purpose, and he didn’t want to keep paying for something that wasn’t necessarily— necessary. So by the end of the semester, he was out doing something else. He moved with some friends, and started over in a new town on what he had leftover in his student loans.
He’d never really wanted to be a cop, he didn’t hate them, he didn’t really have any opinion. His parents however, were keen on him getting a job. Whether it be back at the family farm, or anything else. He didn’t really want to be a farmer. Being so removed from it for a few years he didn’t want to go back to the manual labour it required. He toyed around with the idea of joining the Army, but everything he’d heard from friends who did— they didn’t have a good time and he’d rather be a farmer than do that. Ultimately he ended up at the police academy.
Seeing as he was already pretty athletic, the physical components were easy. It was everything else that was sort of difficult. But being who he was, he knew he would have to work for it so he did. Twenty-seven weeks later and he was graduated and released on the public. At first was was just traffic stops. Everyone told him he needed to be a traffic cop to pay his dues, and god, did they make him stay there forever. Slowly however, he did eventually move up.
Finding his new niche and setting for himself was easy. Somedays he still couldn’t believe he was a cop and not a famous football player, but here he was instead. As long as it didn’t mean spending the rest of his life on a tractor, he was ecstatic.

■, ♡, ☠️ , ☯, ☼ + skylar and liz!
Thank you!!!
Headcanon Meme
■ - Bedroom/house/living quarters headcanon
Skylar - Quite neat and tidy is her and Tachanka’s room. Mainly because they don’t spend a lot of time in there besides to sleep. The closet however is a disaster, they’re both the type to take something off the hanger but not put it back.
Liz - The room she shares with MW Price is a disaster, looks like a tornado went through it. There’s clothes and towels on the floor, their dresser is littered with her jewelry that she was too lazy to put away fully and other misc things. She cleans it, but a few days later it’s a disaster again.
♡ - romantic headcanon
Skylar - When Tachanka gave her that dog tag that was pretty much a promise saying he’s always gonna be there. He customized it for it to say  “Kotyonok. I promise to be faithful to you, to cherish you, to commit to you and support you. My heart will be your shelter and my arms will be your home. Ты мой рай, ты моё небо, ты моё солнце.” (You are my paradise, my heaven, you are my sun). She wears it everyday and was one of the most romantic things he has ever done for her.
Liz - Ghost comes home with flowers quite often after work for her. She loves the gesture and love getting flowers every few weeks. For special occasions he will go all out and but these huge bouquets that’ll sit in the middle of the kitchen table. Most of the bouquets will have little notes in them.
☠ - angry/violent headcanon
Skylar - She’s not a violent person, she will yell in an argument (rarely) from time to time depending on how badly it escalates. There’s only one time where she got violent and it was when Kali tried to push her too hard during sniper training while she was in the very early stages of pregnancy with the first set of twins.
Liz - She’s quick to anger and will yell at someone when angry. And she can get pretty violent too with certain people. She’s punched more than 20 people throughout her military career.
☯ - likes/dislikes headcanon
Skylar - Likes: Tachanka, painting/drawing, reading, having fun with her kids and baking. Dislikes: Rude people, people who don’t care about other peoples well-being, Finka, Kali, onions and who Six/Harry allows into Rainbow.
Liz - Likes: Price/Ghost, reading, cooking, rainy days in Hereford, and spending time with her family. Dislikes: Her father, Shepherd, long training days, annoying/asshole-ish people and Price (OG) leaving the toilet seat lid up.
☼ - appearance headcanon
Skylar - FC: Lily Collins, - long chestnut brown hair, hazel colored eyes and a scar going from her left side of the neck to her collarbone.
Liz - FC: Emilia Clarke - medium length dark brown/borderline black hair, brown eyes and a scar on her right eyebrow.

In the first of a regular column the National League North manager discusses recruitment and trying to get ahead of rivals
When I am interviewing prospective signings for Hereford FC, one of the best questions is the shortest one: “Why?” I want to know why they are sitting in front of me, why their career has taken them down this path and why they think we would be a good match. We speak about their personality, their background and their ambitions. It is all designed to see whether they buy into what we are trying to do, and whether they have the right mentality for our environment.
