Brmingham, Alabama’s Henry Armbrecht is the voice and music behind Ösla. Ösla’s newest release “Moony” comes after Armbrecht’s more recent EP release, “Swannanoa” that was released in 2016. “Moony” is a 5 song release spanning landscape and dreamscape. Armbrecht sings about making time, traveling and going home, being busy, and the assuredness of friends also having much to do. On the song “I Haven’t Slept” Armbrecht sings, “I’ve got a lot to do, I haven’t thought of you. I’ll make time for you.” Henry adds, “The lyrics are kind of meant to be sarcastic. Kind of like when two people run into each other after a while of not seeing each other (exes maybe) and they make a big show about wanting to make plans and stuff, when really neither person has any intention of following through with the plans” While he sings a Mellotron hums backing the vocals and lyrics singing, swelling tones and pleasing layers of whimsy keys and synths, the percussion steadily keeping beat, momentum, rhythm. The theme of traveling home and relationships continues to the song “Interlaken”. Armbrecht sings, “We didn’t know the way home.” The songs speak to traversing distance and relationship, as one’s own journey. Moony was recorded between the cities of Birmingham and Park City, Utah when Armbrecht started recording in Fall of 2017 and finished recording in Spring of 2018 earlier this year. Armbrecht says about the recording, “Most of the instruments were tracked in my apartment in Birmingham, and most of the vocals were recorded in Utah in the Park City Media Library Center.” Henry recorded the majority of the EP, and the mixing and production credit goes to composer and producer, Bradley Turner. Armbrecht adds about the recording of Moony, “[Bradley] also played bass guitar and a few other things [on the EP].” Bradley directed and filmed a live video of Ösla performing the song, “I Haven’t Slept”, the video is in anticipation of the soon to be released EP, Moony. A link to the video included below. Armbrecht likes “Settle Down”, one of the tracks from Moony, noting the song is, “probably the closest thing I’ve ever done to a conventional pop song.” The whole EP is a fantastic collection of songs, and a favorite from listening is “Interlaken”. I find the song to encompass the larger picture of the EP, a piece to help thematically represent the whole. Ethereal, dreamy, and ambient, Moony is a soundscape with ear pleasing tones and instrumentation, and the songs take the listener on a journey from home to distant places, going with friends and in lone endeavors. Beach Weather "Ghosts" - relaxing ambient music by Henry Armbrecht of Alabama. He has three tracks on Bandcamp and a five-song EP coming out in January. I'm thinking Harold Budd meets Washed Out.
