Understanding RSV in Adults: Symptoms, Risks, and Prevention
Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is often associated with young children, but it can also pose a significant threat to adults, especially those at high risk. Understanding the symptoms, risks, and prevention strategies can help you protect yourself and others.
What is RSV?
RSV is a common respiratory virus that can cause cold-like symptoms in most people. However, it can lead to more severe illnesses in certain groups, including adults aged 65 and older, people with weakened immune systems, and those with chronic health conditions.
How does RSV spread?
RSV spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. It can also live on surfaces for several hours, making it possible to spread through contact.
What are the symptoms of RSV in adults?
Symptoms of RSV in adults often resemble a common cold, but they can be more severe in some cases. These symptoms may include:
Runny nose
Cough
Sore throat
Fever
Fatigue
Shortness of breath
Wheezing
When should I seek medical attention for RSV?
If you experience any of the following symptoms, it's important to consult a doctor:
Difficulty breathing
High fever
Worsening cough
Chest pain or pressure
Wheezing
Who is at higher risk for severe RSV?
Adults at higher risk for severe RSV include:
Older adults (65 and older)
People with weakened immune systems due to illnesses or medications
Individuals with chronic health conditions such as heart disease, lung disease, or diabetes
How can I prevent RSV?
While there's no vaccine specifically for RSV, you can take steps to reduce your risk:
Wash your hands frequently with soap and water.
Avoid close contact with sick individuals.
Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
Get vaccinated against other respiratory viruses like influenza.
If you're at high risk, talk to your doctor about preventive measures.
What are the treatment options for RSV?
There's no specific antiviral treatment for RSV. Most people recover on their own within a few weeks. However, if you have severe symptoms, your doctor may prescribe medications to manage the infection.
Remember: RSV can be a serious illness, especially for high-risk populations. By understanding the symptoms, taking preventive measures, and seeking medical attention when necessary, you can protect yourself and others from this contagious virus.
Would you like to know more about RSV or other respiratory illnesses?

Hello I hope it's okay by you but could you write something with Helvetica and his S/O who used to not care about their looks at all, but once they got with him they started being anxious and obsessed with always looking their best?
Rating: Teen and Up Archive Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply Category: GN/M Fandom: Bustafellows Relationships: Helvetica Olsted/MC Characters: Helvetica Olsted, MC/Reader Additional Tags: Kind of angst with some fluff, the ending just sort of happens and isn’t really satisfying though. MC is femme coded in their appearance but they aren’t called a man or women, plastic surgery mentioned A/N: Helvetica! My love! Love when the rare Bustafellows fan pops up and let’s me write for him~ Did this take me waaaaay too long to get to? Yes. Yes it did. I never claimed to be an efficient writer. Word Count: 1,072
Concealer. Lipstick. Blush. Mascara. Stockings.
Concealer to hide the miscellaneous blemishes and scars that ruined your complexion. Lipstick to fill out and plump up your lips. Blush to give your cheeks a youthful glow. Eyeliner to subtly draw attention to the focus of your face. Mascara to define your eyelashes and make them look elegant and long. Stockings to shape your legs in a way to show them off while also hiding them from view. A long knit sweater that was cute, flattering, and just baggy enough to hide the curves of your body that you didn’t like.
That was your ensemble of choice today and you ensured that everything about it – and you – was perfect. After all, Helvetica himself had been the one to teach you what it meant to present your best self in front of others, and he never advocated for anything less than the absolute best.
That's also why, when he suggested which shoes you could wear to elevate your score even more, you hadn't hesitated to put them on. It was his distinguishing eye that knew you better than even yourself, and you wanted to be everything he made of you. Even if standing became painful and blisters formed on the back of your heel, that was a sign that you were beautiful. After all, beauty was pain.
It was a casual get together for him, but he had invited you along. That's why you had to be better than even your best self. Because you were not only representing yourself but him as well.
That’s why you stood back and nursed your glass of champagne while listening to them converse.
"Sounds like your business is booming!" An older gentleman dressed in a polo and khakis laughed as he slapped his knee.
They were friendly, but not friends. A relationship of convenience and happenstance, as Helvetica had told you. However, that did not make it any less of an important relationship. It was, apparently, a sound business decision to work on maintaining it.
"Demand is on the rise, but I am not seeing any more patients than I was previously." Helvetica held his ice-filled drink on his knees as he spoke, letting the condensation roll smoothly down the side and create faint wet patches in the fabric of his pants. "Increasing my caseload would mean reducing the quality of my work and the care of my patients."
"Said like the doctor everyone loves."
"Retaining a good report with my clientele and maintaining their trust is as important as my precision. A lack of trust and understanding means they're more likely to neglect their post surgery care, which negates my work and is detrimental to their health."
"Like I said, they love you for it."
You sat and listened to the conversation passively rather than attempting to contribute to a topic you only understood on some approximate level from hearing Helvetica talk about it previously.
The man sitting with Helvetica looked at you but clearly wasn’t speaking to you. “So how long until this one goes under the knife?” He pointed at you with a jovial laugh, like he’d just said something funny. “They’re cute, but they could use your touch in a few places.”
Your shoulders slumped slightly before you pushed them back again.
It was distressing to hear that all the effort you’d put into looking presentable had been for naught. You wondered if it was your cheeks? Or maybe your chin? You supposed your nose was a little off. Or maybe he could see the exact lumps and curves you’d been trying to hide beneath your sweater.
Your eyes darted over to Helvetica, whose eyes were now on you as well.
You didn’t expect to be a topic of conversation between them. You were supposed to be an accessory; falling into the background of their conversation and simply looking appealing. But… he clearly didn’t think that about you.
You smiled modestly without showing your teeth for fear they weren’t white enough. “I’ve considered it, but Helvetica hasn’t agreed to-”
“And I won’t,” Helvetica said as he sipped at his own glass.
“Come now, Helvetica.” He laughed again and it felt like his voice was scraping at your eardrums. “Isn’t it cruel to deny your partner?”
“It’s bad practice to mix business and pleasure. Once you are on decent terms with someone, you can no longer be their doctor in good conscience.”
The man seemed to be looking through you somehow. “Too bad for you. You managed to land the best guy around, but he won’t help touch you up. If you want, I might know a few other doctors who would love to show him up and bring you to his level.”
You nodded politely. “Thank you. I will consider it.”
Helvetica looked across the room, focusing on nothing in particular before grabbing your hand. “Excuse me, but I believe I see someone else I should really say hello to.”
He began to pull you away before getting a proper response.
With his hand wrapped around yours, it was clear just how much more perfect he was compared to you. His skin was smooth, his finger long and slender, and there wasn’t a scar or blemish in sight.
When you were both far enough away from the man, Helvetica finally spoke to you. “If you want surgery, I’ll introduce you to someone trustworthy. It would be best to find a reputable doctor to make sure you like your results.”
He was, after all, a believer in the philosophy that people should be allowed to choose the body they lived in. He would never dissuade you from doing that for yourself. However, he also wouldn’t support the decision if it was a result of someone else’s decision. After all, that person wouldn’t be the one living with your new face, so their opinion was irrelevant. All of his suggestions and advice were temporary. If you decided you didn’t like how it looked, you could wash it away or take it off.
You squeezed his hand. “I’m not sure.”
It wasn’t a yes or a no.
“Then I won’t inform my contacts yet. Let me know when you make a decision.”
For now, though, you just wanted to look the best you could in your current skin. “I think I need to touch up…”
He paused for a moment before changing directions. “The restrooms are over here.”

1, 3 and 39 of weird writers questions!
1. What font do you write in? Do you actually care or is that just the default setting?
If I’m writing my actual stories, I write in Helvetica, font size 11, 2.0 space. If I’m writing my headcanons or outlines, I write in Times New Roman, font size 12, 1.0 space. I’ve always just sort of done it this way...headcanons and outlines just look better in Times New Roman. My stories need to be in a different font because then I don’t think of them as essays or research papers. It’s good to have a bit of differentiating between the two
3. What is your writing ritual and why is it cursed?
I don’t really...have a writing ritual, other than listening to music when I write. If I get a certain mood from a certain song while writing, then that song is on repeat until the story is finished or until the mood passes and I can switch to a different song. Also, I will not go to bed if I know I’m super close to finishing a fic...which tends to sometimes having me stay up till like 3-4 am. Which is not good, but...*shrugs*. Because I’m in grad school and my classes are online, I’m allowed to sleep in late. I know I’m gonna have to nip this habit once I get an actual job but for now...this is what we’ve got
39. What keeps you writing when you feel like giving up?
Honestly, I go back and reread comments that I’ve gotten on my fics or I’ll go reread my fics (not like I don’t do that anyways) to try and find motivation. Honestly, I’ve never really felt like giving up on writing, but whenever I hit rough patches of thinking that my writing isn’t good or I’ve got no motivation, I’ll go reread @nineninepetals comments/reviews that she’s sent me because it allows me to 1) see what my readers see and 2) know how my readers feel while reading my fics. And it’s really nice read and it’s a nice pickme up. But sometimes, if I’ve just got no writing motivation in me, I don’t touch my writing. At all. I’ll go read fanfiction or work on my embroidery projects or watch youtube. Sometimes if you write too much you start reaching burnout and writer’s block and that can be detrimental to your health and to your joy of creating. So, taking breaks sometimes are good. Doesn’t matter how long the break is. Could be days, weeks, months, or even years. If you need to take the break, take the break. Your readers will patiently wait for you

Empathy, Infographics, Helvetica, and Cynicism
Of all the characteristics we can posses, empathy is one of the most important to have. Without empathy, we would be unable to understand each other, focus primarily on ourselves, disregard others, and perform many other heinous acts.
Sam Dragga and Dan Voss understand the importance of empathy in modern society. In Cruel Pies: The Inhumanity of Technical Illustrations (2001), Dragga and Voss argue that we must develop a sensitivity to the human implications of statistical graphics. It would be very harsh to tell a pregnant woman struggling with her health about the chances she or her baby will make it alive by displaying cold charts of calculations and data. Instead, if you were to present to a pregnant woman struggling with her health a sheet of data with quotes, pictures, or anything else that calms the woman’s emotions, the mental load the woman may be carrying could be lifted or at least supported a little.
By understanding each other, we could make the planet a less insufferable place to be. However, modern society has focused on emphasizing the individual, not empathy. In other words, it seems as if people in modern society focus more on themselves and less on groups working together to perform empathetic gestures. We see people, companies, etc. appearing supportive, empathetic, etc., but not doing much other than appearing. This could be because people, companies, etc. are attempting to appear empathetic to heighten their rhetorical appeal, not because they truly care.
This shift towards an emphasis on the individual is supported by how society’s views on font type has changed. Gary Hustwit, in his film Helvetica (2007), makes it clear through interviews with graphic designers that Helvetica became the font type that many naturally opted to. As a result, Helvetica was the go-to font that let people know, for example, which store brand will let them fit in with everyone else, since a brand using Helvetica attempted to “normalize” itself.
Initially, Helvetica was not being used as a form of self-expression that told others something about you. It was initially being used for its clarity and order. The shift of the function of font type from clarity and order to self-expression gives credence to the idea that modern society emphasizes the individual. In other words, the semiotics of font in Western culture evolved in such a way that when we relate the denotative qualities of the font we form the connotation of self-expression. We now think fonts are saying something about someone or an organization. Nearly gone are the days when fonts were interpreted to be about clarity. It’s now all about you (like the shopping example suggested you were someone who fit in) or someone else.
Is this focus on the individual a bad thing? It’s important to have self-respect for yourself. However, we should not go head-over-heel for ourselves. This creates a self-centered and egocentric society incapable of empathy. This can lead to the downfall of a civilized society. Perhaps this emphasis on the self can also be a reason for the myriad of mental health issues found today, however, a psychologist should look more into this assertion.
Rudolf Arnheim, in his academic book Picture, Symbols, and Signs (2004), argues that all kinds of images (abstract or not) serve a particular function and purpose. The function of font has clearly changed. We can combat cynicism in modern society with empathy. For this reason San Dragga and Dan Voss’s message about empathy in infographics is not one to be taken lightly. It is one to be taken seriously.

( @hellabog ) asked : ❛ don’t you worry my dear, i’ll take good care of you i promise. didn’t you know a demon always keeps his/her word? ❜ — Helvetica & Rivehn
Rivehn bared his teeth as he struggled against the bonds she had him in. He wasn't as powerful as his mother unfortunately, so he couldn't just shift into smoke and free himself, and unless he knew what exactly was tying him down to the floor with his arms behind his back, he couldn't make it rot either. If it was iron he'd be fucked…
"Screw you, bitch!" When all else fails, be vicious and cut deeply with your words. That was the lesson his mother had taught him… Unfortunately he knew nothing about the deceptively beautiful young woman before him, so there wasn't anything he could say that would make her lash out. Never mind that he was her prisoner, so having her lash out would probably be very bad for his health indeed.
How the fuck had she gotten off that island anyway? He'd thought those people had almost all been locked up, it was why his mother permitted him a small measure of mobility, rather than to keep him in Tartarus for the entirety of his existence.

Rupture and Continuity
“It’s going to disappear,” Trump said a month ago.
On Tuesday, he told us to expect between 100,000 and 240,000 deaths in the United States due to COVID-19.
He entered the White House briefing room yesterday and said, “I just found out I am number one on Facebook.”
Seeking, at this point, to unpack the president’s drift from myth to brief proximity to reality to self-aggrandizement is ersatz intellectualism.
But the dead, over 5,000 of them to date, are very real, as will be the 100,000 or more to come. It’s already horrific, and April looks to be a cruel month.
One would hope that running concurrently to Trump’s failure to respond to the COVID-19 outbreak, a political opposition would stand in sharp contrast to his hucksterism, his appeal to nativism, his willingness to aid and comfort economic elites while continuing to stomp on the necks of society’s least well-off.
This is, however, America in the year 2020. The rot is pervasive; vital organs are failing. The nation has entered a necrotic state.
When Joe Biden’s not dumfounded and checking his notes on live television, uttering complete nonsense, or issuing vapid calls for the convening of committees, he remains a dedicated foot soldier for the health care industry. In the wake, last week, of 3.3 million America workers losing their jobs—and, by extension, their employer-based health insurance—he continues to oppose Medicare for All.
Madness.
Only an act of God, though, will deliver the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination to Bernie, despite reality endorsing him.
I’ve found solace in writing each night; I’d go as far to say that I haven’t felt this focused in several years. I’ve found solace in poetry, and I’ve found solace, however delusional, in history.
Thomas Piketty, in his 1,000-plus-page “Capital and Ideology,” points to a historic rupture that occurred in Sweden. Until the early 20th century, what’s considered one of the archetypes of Scandinavian social democracy was profoundly unequal, more so than France at the time, somewhat less so than England.
Beginning in the 1920s, however, with the rise of the Swedish Social Democratic Party and movements on the political left, wealth was redistributed, the pillars of a robust state infrastructure were erected, and a culture of collective wellbeing, rather than crass individualism, was cultivated.
It was a rupture in historical terms, meaning one that emerged over decades, rather than years. And I don’t want to sentimentalize it; Sweden today is far from perfect.
But that history is bracing.
As, too, is some of what’s transpired recently in America. The worker strikes; calls for Medicare for All, euthanizing the fossil fuel sector, and nationalizing hospitals and airlines; and the bolstering of unemployment benefits in the recently passed economic stimulus represent significant breakthroughs in a fight against neoliberalism, austerity, and the march toward societal death.
But the procession of ambulance sirens this morning on Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, where I live, and the continued rise in the number of COVID-19 cases are a reminder that, if a rupture in America is occurring, it’s not happening quickly enough.

he . is . a . fucking . babie . boy .
pisces sun , virgo moon meaning he’s emotional , self conscious and definitely a perfectionist . sensitive and cares so much for others well-being .
grew up with a father that left him in the hands of his drug addicted mother .
that drug addicted mother loved him no doubt , but was too run by her addictions to properly raise him .
because of her paranoid state , he was quite sheltered from the world , naive , quiet , has a soft heart . he has a slight stutter when he speaks sometimes . very nervous around new people , totally afraid of what they’ll think .
was bullied in school for his family history , for his overall nature , taken advantage of for the kind heart he has . but , he is a very bubbly and sweet person when you get to know him well enough . caring and gentle .
watched his mother go in and out of her phases , the need to protect and care for her , take care of her despite making his life harder than it should have ever been because he loves her nonetheless .
his grandmother passed away when he was in his early teens , she was always so important to him and would help him with his mother whenever she could . with her gone ? not only did his world shatter , it was his sole responsibility to take care of his mother .
it didn’t help after she’d finally got it through her head to get help that she had fallen ill . forced to get multiple jobs to support her and himself while also starting early studies with medical programs to get into med school .
lots on his shoulders he had to deal with . he managed and made it into school , wanting to be better off later in life .
still dealing with all that shit and now his mother’s own past coming to bite him in the ass . her dealings with hydrus and the debt she owed landed him cleaning up her mess while she had no consequences .
it was how he became a medical personnel for the group while still attending university .
definitely loves the idea of love and wants to experience it , he’s kind of a little too willing to care and give his heart while he also has slight trust issues if that makes sense ?
big romantic .
he’s bi . a virgin ; maybe has kissed one person but other than that ? nothing .
please also check out his acceptance post with the interview questions to get more insight as i’m still looking to develop him further !
plots .
if y’all wanna let’s get it and always willing to others and expanding on whatever !
a friend or best friend ? like he’s lonely .
romance of some sort , like get him out into the world with maybe ?

So I spent Sunday up at 4:30, pounding out a blog about the impending climate crisis, like you do, and then I literally had this conversation with my husband in the car:
Don’t you think, says he, that climate change is a little overblown? Do you really think it’s that big a crisis?
Well, I say, newly armed with talking point number one, curtesy of Cook et al, not only do I believe that, but also literally thousand of peer-reviewed scientific studies confirm that belief! So.
Well, continues my husband, I just don’t see how if people know about this, they wouldn’t do something about it.
But see, I grew up being told the world was six thousand years old. Seventh Day Adventists in the room: who has been the the American Museum of Natural History? You know who founded that museum? Teddy Roosevelt’s dad. It was chartered in 1869, which means that it was over a hundred years old when I was born and it was there all through my childhood, crammed so full of reassembled and meticulously dated and catalogued fossils evidencing that to the degree that we are going to connect “things we believe” to “material reality” at all, the world is actually millions of years old, and the ancient texts from which the Bible was collated — which read curiously like the creation “myths” of other cultures and less like, say, a peer-reviewed journal article regarding the carbon dating a fossilized dinosaur remains —are not literally true. And yet every adult in my church and school and apparently thirty eight percent of the people you encounter in the Walmart or at the post office, in the face of all these dino bones, just say Nah.
So, yes, I say to my husband. Yes, absolutely I think it is possible that the evidence for climate change is unanswerable and also that people are ignoring or choosing not to believe it. It’s scary and unpleasant and the answer to address it involves giving up stuff. And we hate that.
Among the most cancerous lie we absorb, I think, is this lie that there’s a relationship between what you have and what you deserve. Top ten things I hate about capitalism, right there: this soothing assurance that you deserve a break today, that you’re worth L’Oreal, that you’ve earned a vacation. People want to feel valued; connecting the basic need for this feeling to the purchase of an item you’re selling is a solid marketing tactic and also it is completely dismantling our society, especially in the face of a growing class disparity in which a growing number of Americans can’t afford McDonalds, shampoo, or vacations, at least, not without forgoing the now-luxuries of a stable housing, health care, and savings for emergencies. A disproportionate number of people feel deprived, as you will when you believe that something as basic as your self-with is out of reach because you can’t afford everything you’re told all the time you deserve, and here’s this bitch telling you you need to stop driving everywhere and eating hamburgers or everyone is going to die?
Why do we feel deprived when actually we are not? Why is the word “no” so infuriating that the idea that saving our planet from existence might require us to stop eating hamburgers feels like oppression? I get it; I gave seriously thought to changing my job, possibly my career path, yesterday, because I was unfairly chastised for lateness when I had not been late. And it felt bad! I have been known to cry literal tears over misplaced running pants. Don’t I deserve good work feels? Pants in which to run?
This sense that things are Really Really Desperate when actually things are Pretty Much Okay is an ongoing personal struggle of mine, but it is not unique to me. I would suggest that if you are told the world might end and your children die in a decade unless radical change is made, and your takeaway is that the threat is your loss of burger-eating-opportunity, then you are the one being a little extreme right now. Because that investment in hamburgers is appropriate for someone who is literally in danger of starvation, but that is not yet the case here in America (I see you, Mick Mulvaney).
You can actually live without hamburgers; you can fly places less; you can stop voting in monster people whose campaigns are openly being financed by oil lobbies. These are not extreme actions. These are, in fact, measured responses to the possible end of life as we know it. It feels extreme because we have been lovingly cultivated, like little consumer bonsai, to believe that if we don’t have the things we want how we want them, and also right now, that is because someone has decided we don’t deserve: deserve that thing specifically, and also deserve, in general.
But not being able to have what you want is not evidence of your lack of value. The relationship between your intrinsic worth, what you deserve, and the things you have (or don’t): it feels real because you’ve been told to believe in it. There are innumerable examples disproving that story; you don’t even have to take the C train to the Natural History Museum to find them.
And I think you’ll find, as I did after the Museum Cafe Breakdown of 2010, that the Bible did get this right: the truth really does make you free.

There is no cure for Hepatitis B. In some cases, the infection goes away on its own (in 4 to 8 weeks for more than 9 out of 10 adults). Some (about 1 in 20 people) that contract this virus as adults become “carriers, (a chronic condition) are likely to infect other people and can do so for the rest of their lives unknowingly

One in 300 animal welfare complaints at UK farms lead to prosecution – study | Animal welfare
New Post has been published on https://petnews2day.com/pet-industry-news/pet-charities/one-in-300-animal-welfare-complaints-at-uk-farms-lead-to-prosecution-study-animal-welfare/
One in 300 animal welfare complaints at UK farms lead to prosecution – study | Animal welfare
Just one in 300 complaints about animal welfare at UK farms led to a prosecution over the last four years, with half of the accused holdings not even inspected, analysis has shown.
A report by Animal Equality and the Animal Law Foundation also said that fewer than three in 100 of the UK’s estimated 291,000 farms had an annual inspection by a public body between 2018 and 2021.
The charities said there is less than one inspector for every 205 farms, and the “risk-based” regime means “higher-risk” farms – those that have been the subject of a complaint, for example – are prioritised but even they are not always inspected.
Abigail Penny, the executive director of Animal Equality UK, said: “Non-compliance is endemic, evidenced time and again through undercover investigations and now further bolstered by the data revealed in this report.
“Pigs are having their tails cut off, cows are unable to walk or stand and hens are crammed into overcrowded cages, yet farms are typically receiving little more than a slap on the wrist. These findings are disturbing and should be alarming to any consumer. Animal abusers need to truly be held accountable. Right now, this is evidently not the case.”
Of the farms that were inspected after a complaint, non-compliance on site was identified at just under a third, according to the report, titled the Enforcement Problem, which was compiled using data gathered from public bodies. Like prosecutions, use of other legislative enforcement actions was rare, with 144 improvement, care or compliance notices issued in 2020, while local authorities received 6,466 complaints relating to farmed animal welfare.
The authors found that even when investigations by animal protection organisations such as Animal Equality, Animal Aid, Compassion in World Farming and Open Cages uncovered alleged evidence of illegal activity or substandard practices, more often than not it went unpunished. Across 65 such exposés released between 2016 and 2021, approximately seven in 10 resulted in no subsequent formal enforcement action, they found.
The report says that with more than 180 public bodies responsible for legal oversight and enforcement, including local authorities, “inconsistencies and confusion have arisen. The disjointed nature of regulation and law enforcement has enabled a lack of continuity, enforcement and accountability.”
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs is charged with overseeing policy enforcement in England, and the devolved governments have responsibility in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. But in England, Scotland and Wales, day-to-day enforcement is in the hands of the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) and local authorities.
Edie Bowles, a solicitor and the executive director of the Animal Law Foundation, said: “The problem exists across all areas of animal law. What makes it particularly jarring for farmed animals is not only the extent of the problem but the constant proclamations that the UK has some of the highest animal welfare standards on farms and slaughterhouses in the world.

“If these standards only exist on paper and are not upheld in practice, the value of those laws is rendered questionable at best and redundant at worst.”
The APHA said: “We take breaches of animal welfare legislation very seriously and investigate every allegation that is reported to us.”
The Scottish government also said it takes animal welfare very seriously, while the Welsh government said it was a priority and referenced the APHA’s control regime.

The Cruelest of Things.
I’m on my third fourth fifth lollipop of the morning and listening to yet another audiobook. (Thank the Gods for Overdrive). I didn’t sleep again tonight. Is this a cry for help? Probably. I’m not gonna lie.
I’ve been thinking a lot about my life recently. My life is so incredibly complicated and I’ve made it that way through silence, through fear of judgement, and through the fear of living. I feel like I’ve been brainwashed my whole childhood, not that my entire childhood was terrible. I’ve never really put this into words. At least, not someplace other people could actually read it. It’s kind of terrifying to think about...but I’m ready to talk about my sexuality, mental health, and spirituality....because maybe my blabbering will be able to help someone else accept themself.
I remember there was a time I thought being bisexual (later I realized I’m pansexual) was the hardest part of my life. My biggest secret. I went through my high school years embarrassed by my sexuality. I always felt like the fat faggot...and that felt so wrong because of the conservative way I was raised. Sometimes I wonder what it’s like to feel like you belong in society. It must be such an ironically freeing feeling to fit in.
I remember when I first told my friends that I was dating my female best friend they said things like; “I’m sorry, but I’ll only ever see you both as really close friends,” and “EW SERIOUSLY?”. I only had one friend accept me right away and she’s been accepting me regardless of my loves, hates, and overall craziness ever since. There were some people I couldn’t even tell because we were sixteen, it was my first relationship, and I didn’t expect others to get it...but the relationship lasted for seven years. In those seven years, there were still some people I never told until our breakup when I was so broken I didn’t care anymore. I lived in fear and I still don’t know why I let myself live that way?
It is so heartbreakingly unfair to us queer kids to have to replay our coming out over and over. We don’t just come out to our parents, we have to come out to everyone and in a world filled with so much hate...it hurts over and over. I spent 7 years of my life with a woman whom I thought was the love of my life and I was afraid of that love. I was afraid of what others would think of that love.
When I first fell in love, it was at the beginning of the millennial LGBT movement. Obama hadn’t legalized gay marriage yet. (I remember when the law passed, the rush of realizing I could marry my SO and the thrilling excitement it brought.) I remember how excited I was when I went to NY State Fair and found an LGBT booth....the first time I’d ever met anyone that supported me. The first time I ever saw pins and stickers and flags all screaming “WE ACCEPT YOU” in rainbow Helvetica. I remember walking with my head high for HOURS after visiting that booth because it was a time when it was scarier to come out....but there were others like me. They were just hiding, waiting to be accepted.
I’m tired of hiding.
This past May, my ex-SO turned around and told me that she didn’t love me and that she wasn’t gay anymore. She had cheated on me with a boy from her job while I was away at a family member’s graduation, I’m not sure if anything sexual happened, but I know emotional and some physical cheating happened. I should have known about the feelings and the cheating, I hate myself for not allowing myself to believe something was up..even with all the warning signs. When you trust someone....it’s hard to believe they’ll do something like betray that trust so violently. However, when she broke up with me she decided to full out say that she wasn’t gay anymore, like it was something she could change at the drop of a hat. In that sentence, I felt more betrayed than I ever felt finding out about the cheating. I felt this cascade of memories flooding over me with anger because suddenly those 7 years were a lie. A heartbreaking mirage. My journey to acceptance with her was fake. It was really too hard for her to say that she had just moved on. She could have kept it completely humane and just told me she just found someone else that she clicked with better and left it for that. Yet, she had to go for the cruelest of blows causing me to question those seven years of my life.
Even now as I sit here, typing to the sounds of David Bowie, I still can’t fathom the amount of disregard for a person’s feelings saying something like that is attune to. I am at a loss for words but the emotions are bittersweet relief and firey anger. I don’t want to be in love with someone who thinks saying things like that is okay. I can’t believe I let myself be in love with someone who ultimately thought saying something like that was okay in the end.
So, I’m here to scream from the rooftops because even though she “decided that she’s not queer.” I am queer. I am thankful, because my journey with her helped me come out to my family. It helped me be accepted by my family. Seven years of a fake relationship to her, were seven years I learned to love myself and accept myself. My next relationship will come easier because I’ll get to love more and explain less...so I thank her for pacifying me or whatever it is she tells herself so she can sleep better at night.
Because; my name is Bee and I am queer. I am pansexual; I have the capacity to love boys; I have the capacity to love girls; I have the capacity to love any human; (I have the capacity to love aliens); I have the capacity to love everyone.
I’m going to find my happiness with or without acceptance.
