Trying to think of the most amazing thing I know about nature was difficult. So, I decided to think of something that I had heard about recently, volcanoes, specifically volcanic lightning. When we think of volcanoes, we mainly think of spewing, hot lava. But did you know that volcanoes can also produce lightning?
Volcanic lightning is typically formed from ash plumes emitted in a volcanic explosion, so you won’t often see it in fluid ejecting volcanoes in areas like Hawaii. During a volcanic eruption that is rich in ash, interactions of magma fracturing and ash particles generates an electric charge (Smith et al., 2021). The plume emissions form a cloud with similar electric properties as thunderstorm clouds. This creates an incredible display of the combination of lighting and lava that appears photoshopped but is actually a real phenomenon. Volcanic lightning accompanied the eruptions of Mt. St Helens as well as Vesuvius (Patel, 2009).

(National Geographic, 2015)
Another thing about volcanic lightning, is that it could lead to a better eruption warning system. The eruptions themselves also contribute to the size of charge being created, not only the ash. By using sensors which record the time and magnitude of the impulses that the lightning creates, a mapping system can be created to determine whether an eruption has begun (Patel, 2009). Another way that lightning can be used to predict eruptions is by monitoring ash clouds. A tool can detect when the lightning strikes to alert of a possible eruption occurring (Baissac et al., 2021). In regions where volcanic eruptions are a major risk to communities, this could be a very useful tool.
Even more, volcanic lightning could reveal the secrets about the geological past of the Earth. Volcanoes hold ammonia, methane, water, and hydrogen which are the right ingredient to life. With volcanic lightning, this could have provided the spark to convert these molecules into amino acids, building blocks of proteins (Patel, 2009).
I find this phenomenon really cool because until recently I had no idea that lightning developed from volcanoes as well. I also find it interesting because there is still so much research that can be done using volcanic lightning. From developing better eruption warning systems, to finding the secret to life.
