finally finished the first episode of sg-1 children of the gods. @frostysfrenzy

new set of blorbos just dropped y'all.

this was the most 1997 experience i have ever had. it was glorious. i forgot how silly television productions could be.

the highlights:

it took exactly 30 minutes for a mcguyver reference. the restraint that took. couldn't be me.

amanda tapping's beautiful 90's haircut. the business rachel. i did find an interesting article about it though.

hard to remember this is pre-9/11 but post gulf-war. different political climate in the writing and you can tell but it is still a "ummmmm" from me.

the zero explanation how/why daniel jackson is no longer james spader. just accept it.

the most improbable thing is daniel's glasses prescription still being worth anything.

i feel like stargate is the reason we have ncis. i will not elaborate.

christopher judge has the most magnificent voice and side eye.

so o'neill and teal'c have soulmatism happening and i will not take criticism at this time.

Nerd!Steve but lets make it fun. Steve comes from a family of brilliant people. His dad’s a super genius who married another genius and they’re both off winning awards for cultivating life on Mars or whatever, meanwhile there’s Steve the “dumb” one. The disappointing son with his weird interests in the paranormal whose inventions never seem to quite work and his job as an IT tech. “Have you tried turning the system off and on?” Steve and his friends (Enter Dustin and the scoops troop) have been convinced for years that the Russians are developing some kind of supernatural super weapon, and it turns out he’s actually right.

The Russians have been working on opening gates to a parallel dimension and as a result freaky shit keeps leaking through and causing death and mayhem that the government has to sweep under the rug. Most of that cleanup falls to the CIA’s Stargate division. Billy is a top field agent with a reputation for getting the job done no matter what the stakes. Unfortunately for his operations team, keeping up with his maverick tendencies is almost as much of a headache as the operations themselves. His life tangles with Steve’s when a machine of his actually works and he and his friends end up in the cross hairs of Russian agents who happen to be targets in Billy’s latest mission. Shit goes sideways and Billy ends up needing their help to complete his mission.

Billy’s team is used to his antics. Heather has betting pools going about how quickly the next “Bond Girl” will show up and whether or not Billy will fall into her web before she trys and kills him when it’s inevitably revealed that she’s been working for the enemy the whole time. Seriously the guy wouldn’t know a healthy relationship if it walked up and volunteered to pay for his therapy. No one was counting on the nerds or how Billy would respond to one of them in particular. It’s insane, but also hilarious AF watching Billy struggle to keep the bumbling civilians alive, and don’t think she hasn’t clocked how he can’t leave the pretty one with the glasses alone. It’s like watching two little boys in a sand pit. He’s always in Steve’s face and pulling on his pigtails, you’d never know this was the man of mystery who has left a trail of broken hearts on seven continents. If he can just pull his head out of his ass maybe she’s not going to have to start setting him up on blind dates after all.

Steve thinks Billy is the WORST. He’s pushy and arrogant and won’t stop touching Steve’s tools even though he’s made it clear he has a specific system for them!!! He gets that Billy is trying to annoy him to death as payback for ruining his operation, but none of that was Steve’s fault and Billy should really be a lot more grateful that Steve and the others are here to help; because they never would have known what the Russians were up to or had a chance at stopping it without them. So what if Steve can’t win a fight, he’s about to save the fucking world so give him some credit! Billy could at the very least stop teasing him with that ‘Pretty Boy’ crap. Steve went to high school okay, he knows he doesn’t compare to guys like Billy.

Billy is pretty sure Steve is the best and worst thing that has ever happened to him. He’s not sure how he’s still alive when he attracts disaster like a magnet, or how someone so brilliant can be so dense. The fact that Steve thinks he’s dumb though like genuinely baffles him and he kinda wants to punch everyone who ever made him feel like he was less than just because he didn’t meet their expectations. Kinda wants to punch something every time he looks at Steve honestly. Billy’s used to beautiful people throwing themselves at him constantly, so can someone explain why his favorite thing all of a sudden are the little folds in Steve when he’s concentrating, and the way his eyes light up all ‘Aha!’ right when he thinks of a good comeback to one of Billy’s jibes? He is not this guy! He doesn’t do attachments for damn good reason. So Why does he want to listen to Steve and Dustin fighting over what the CIA is hiding in Area 51 and why does he get such a kick out of how they collectively lose their minds when he hints that he’s been there.

Billy’s not attached, but if Steve wanted to sleep with him he’d be down. They’re hot and tommorrow might never come and all that. But hey, if it does he’s hinted a few times that the teams Digital Targeter Daniel has been talking about retirement. It’ll be hard finding a replacement you know, cause Billy is picky and he doesn’t just want someone who knows tech but someone who isn’t afraid to be in the field with him.

Steve’s like, “oh man, I can see what you mean. Good luck, I really hope you find someone”.

Heather Watches SG1 s7ep13: Grace

Hello friends! I asked on twitter which one you wanted to see next and this was the one so.. I genuinely really enjoy this episode but I don’t think it would be top five? The Kiss TM obviously is up there but its so... sad.. BUT I think its a beautifully shot episode and the director is wonderful. Also if I ever meet Damien Kindler, I have a list of questions. 

I watched this a few weeks ago but am posting it today (11/085/2020) because I forgot I had even typed the notes until the other night when i asked. 

As always, I swear quite a bit but I also cried quite a lot in this episode becuse well I’m a hopeless romantic, I love Space Dad and I had just been dumped so all the angst hurts haha

also also, I leave most if not all my typos in here because I think it makes it funnier and I don’t usually look at my keyboard when I type so I make mistakes. I’m not perfect at touch typing by any standard and I still don’t do it properly anyway.

Final Thoughts: 

I literally cried three times in that episode. Normally its once with Jacob’s scene but this time it was every time Jack was there too. I think my recent breakup is making me soft and all I can handle right now is fluff. Anything else hurts. 

I love that episode with my entire being but fuck me does it hurt

Also who or what is Grace? I have SO many questions. 

Its a beautifully shot episode though

And Amanda’s acting is ace. So is RDAs.

Taking a break from The Rainbow Quilt (umm...still) and working on a shawl this week. 

Yarn is Scheepjes Whirl. I do not like it. It is splitty and where the colour joins are it’s a fuzzy mess. It changes color one ply at a time which is kind of cool, but I also don’t really like the heathered look it creates. I’ll finish the shawl, but I’ll never buy the yarn again. 

Pattern is Fall River by Katya Novikova. It used to be a free pattern on ravelry, now it’s $5. Super glad I got the pattern last year. I had started it then in a different yarn but the color didn’t work out well at all for the pattern, the repeat was too short. Pretty easy to fall into the rhythm of it, but I get annoyed every time the puff stitch row comes up lol.

Still, nice to keep my hands busy. I’ve also been binge watching Stargate SG 1 for the first time since college because why not.

Average sleep: 6-10 hours. I try to plan for 8, but it doesn’t always happen. And I get closer to 10 (or more!) on the weekend when I just opt not to set an alarm at all.

Dogs or cats: I don’t like pets. But we have a plushie cat family. 7 of them. And they’re the cutest ever!

Number of blankets: Top sheet is mandatory, and at least one blanket. I have a heavy faux-mink that’s usually warm enough. @ovenroastedtwerkey‘s parents gave us a weighted blanket that I use if it gets really cold.

Dream trip: I don’t really like to travel, and I definitely don’t fly. But if I ever have copious amounts of disposable income and generous time off, I’d like to take a cruise. Preferably to visit some of my UK-based friends.

Alejandrohad been especially wary of scoping out the halls near Chris’quarters, let alone the plane cockpit after the challenge in London.Ruse or not, he had been so startled it’d shaken hisself-confidence a bit. As someone who liked to believe he could win agame of fourth dimensional chess, Alejandro didn’t take it lightlywhen someone managed to successfully trick and gain the upper handover him. That’s exactlywhy a certain mean raven-haired beauty was on his radar (and hecouldn’t deny he had other non-game related hopes for her as well).

Buthe couldn’t let his hair-on-its-end instincts stop him from gettingwhat could be incredibly useful intel. The kind of intel that couldmake or break his success on this stupid show. Heplayed by the rules for the most part, but he wasn’t above finding,exploiting, and pushing the envelope with loopholes or “convenientlyacquired” pieces of information.

Sohe took a deep, calmingbreath, then slowly crept along the wall towards Chris’ quarters.As he crept closer, he heard at least three different voices: Chris’all-too-familiar snark, a slightly deeper baritone, and a morereserved, soft-spoken voice. Alejandro sneaked a few glances aroundfor Chef’s larger, imposing form. While he’d been able to smoothtalk his way out of the past few times he hadbeen caught skulkingaround here, he just couldn’t shake the feeling this time was goingto be very different. MaybeChris was cracking down on Chef a bit more?

Whenhe didn’t see Chef anywhere, he steeledhimself again and stealthilyslipped under the doorknob. Thenhe peered through thecomically convenient keyhole. 

Therewas Chris, leaning as far back in his luxury recliner as he couldwhile one of his poor interns massaged his feet. A man with a buzzcut and a fully decorated military uniform leaned on the wall nearestto the recliner. While his uniform gave off the impression of a veryimportant authoritative figure, his expression carried the sameobnoxious nonchalance Chris’ expression usually held. That aloneunnerved Alejandro. If Chris was borderline psychotic with what kindof legal ambiguity he had access to as a famous reality TV show host,Alejandro could only imagine how much worse he might be as a hard-assmilitary general. Just the passing daydream was enough to sendshivers down his spine and threaten nightmares worse than the realityof the idiotic Owen as a teammate.

Tohis disappointment, Alejandro couldn’t quite see the third figurein the room. Every so often, he saw the dull brown glint of the rimson a pair of glasses and sporadically moving hands, but that was it.He turned his attention towards eavesdropping, waiting for a goodpoint to start at least trying to piece together what the ongoingdiscussion was.

“…timesdo I have to say it’s dangerous?!”The soft-spoken man complained.

Chrisand the military man chuckled.

“That’spart of the fun!” Chris brayed enthusiastically.

“Theteens on this show have dealt with worse and they’ve all signedpretty iron-clad contracts,” the military man added.

“General,with all due respect, I am part of the classified project that dealtwith some of the artifacts in that warehouse. I waspretty appalled by how many broken and sparking pieces I came across.I almost sprained my ankle just trying to climb around piles ofjunk!”

“Iwonder if somebody will die…” Chris stroked his chin thoughtfullywith a sinister glint in his beady eyes.

Thatwas enough to make Alejandro shiver as if he’d been hit with an icygust from Antarctica itself.

“It’llbe impressive if they make it past security alone.”

Chrisgrinned like a kid in a candy store. “Ratings are gonna be throughthe roof! I can feel it.”

“Ihave another surprise in store, too.” The military man smiled withsimilarly fiendish delight.

“Tellme! Tell me!” Chris squealed.

Alejandrosuppressed a sigh when the military man leaned in and whisperedsomething to Chris. As much as he strained to listen, Alejandro onlyheard Charlie Brown “wah wah” noises and watched Chris becomethat much more eager.

“Willyou guys listen for one damn minute?!” The soft-spoken man raged.

“Iknow, I know. Dangerous tech endangering lives. Yada, yada….”Chris rolled his eyes.

“Ireally wish they’d sent that little spitfire Samantha instead ofyou,” the generalmuttered.

“Sinceyou both have such disgusting disregard for human life, especiallychildren at that.”The soft-spoken man stood up and folded his hands. “Allow me to putthis in a way you’ll understand: There are highly classifiedartifacts in that warehouse. Artifacts that even General McClean haslimited clearance and knowledge of. I don’t care how iron-clad yourcontracts are or what clearance you already have. Step foot in thiswarehouse. Find one of these artifacts and have it show up on camera.You’ll be facing some pretty dire consequences. Thrown in prisonfor the rest of your natural-born life consequences.”

Alejandro’seyes widened at the name “McClean.” That explained a lot here.

Thegeneral cleared his throat and folded his arms behind his back,trying to appear professional. “Daniel, I had a team thoroughlysniff out those artifacts this morning. You’re only here to signoff on everything and give me the go-ahead.”

Therewas a beat of silence as Daniel fished something out of his pantspocket. Alejandro couldn’t quite make out the details from this farof a distance, but it looked like a small golden locket with a brightred gem in the center. Daniel cleared his throat while GeneralMcClain’s face turned bright red.

“Thoroughly?”Daniel sighed. “I found this the minute I walked in!”

“That…?”General McClain stomped over and snatched the weird locket fromDaniel’s hands. “That’s a bauble I got for my niece’sbirthday. She’s a big fan of this kind of old…antique-ystuff!”

“Uh-huh.You conveniently got her a present that looks exactly like somethingfrom the dossier .”

Chrissnickered and folded his arms behind his head, obviously enjoying theshow.

“Igot it two weeks ago.” General McClain replied haughtily.

“Where’dyou get it?” Daniel was in full view now. He was surprisingly leanand muscular for a bookish type with slightly ruffled brown hair.Sweat was dripping down General McClain’s face to the point hemight need a few buckets. The more nervous he appeared, the angrierDaniel became.

Suddenly,Daniel’s pocket buzzed. He pulled out his cell phone andimmediately stalked to the other side of the room. “Now isn’t avery good time…”

GeneralMcClain dabbed at his forehead with his arm. Gritting his teeth, heshot a look at the weird bauble in his hand, then ran a hand throughhis hair. Rolling his eyes, Chris snatched it away. The reality TVshow host took one look at it before hefting it towards the door withas much strength as he could muster.

Secondslater, Alejandro felt something lightly bump against the toe of hisboot. He looked down and was surprised to find the weird locket lyingthere. He heard the general and Chris arguing, but it all becamemuffled background noise as he gingerly scooped up the locket to takea closer look. It wouldn’t hurt to try and develop some better ideaof what this bizarre object was before squirreling it away andreturning to his team. The more he could figure out here and now, thebetter an advantage he’d have later.

Smirkingto himself, Alejandro idly ran his thumb around the circumference ofthe strange artifact. Upon closer inspection, there were twoconcentric rings around the beautiful red gem. The ringsfeatured various Egyptianhieroglyphs. Admittedly, Alejandro’s knowledge of ancient Egyptianart and hieroglyphs wasn’t as up to par as he’d like, but none ofthe symbols looked like anything he had ever studied personally. Thesymbols were utterly alien to him. Carefully, he ran a finger overthe hieroglyphs, in turn rotating the ring on front-

-Alejandrofelt himself lurch forward slightly. The world around him blurredcrazily in what appeared to be a wobbling, almost hallucinogenichaze. After a few dizzying moments, Alejandro found himself floatingout in space. He felt like hewas weightless and drifting about aimlessly like a fisherman’sbobber. Moments later, the nameless, hypothetical fisherman starteddrawing in his line at a breakneck speed. Cringing, Alejandrosqueezed his eyes tightly shut.

Therewere a few moments of darkness and silence. Then he felt a lightsqueeze on his upper arm. Hehesitated, wondering if he’d fallen unconscious or experienced someother bizarre episode. He took a deep breath, feeling slight reliefwhen he heard his steady heartbeat. Now he was ready to wake up inthe crap-tastic makeshift infirmary in the plane: He could alreadysee the worn-outcouch and the worrying duct tape pieces slapped over mystery holes inthe pale yellow wall.

“Alejandro…?”His arm was squeezed again. And he immediately recognized that voice.Both his heartbeat and hormones took off like a dual pair of rockets.Maybe his infirmary trip would be more pleasant than he otherwisebelieved.

Grinninggiddily and preparing for snarky banter, he finally opened his eyes.

“Areyou okay?” Heather leaned closer towards him, her expression a mixbetween concerned and mildly irritated.

“Iam now,” Alejandro replied, putting on his most charming smile.“I’m waking up to an angel.”

Heatherlaughed, rolled her eyes, and playfully hit his shoulder. Thatreaction set off alarm bells and Alejandro took a closer look atHeather. She looked mucholder: she had a fuller figure, a naturally confident set to hershoulders and brow rather than forced, and other details Alejandrocouldn’t accurately pin down or describe unless he took the time tothink it over. But those details were significantly differentnonetheless.

Inaddition, she was wearing a…wedding dress. A form-fitting,high-fashion, glitter and sequin-covered wedding dress. The dress wasalmost tacky but in style enough that Heather justified her choiceswith her bold personality. Alejandro felt his face burn up as herealized just how many little things he’d picked out about her.Yes, he had a laundry list of obscure, ridiculous details about allof the contestants, but the more he learned about Heather inparticular, the stronger his rose-tinted glasses.

“You’reblushing!” Heather leaned towards him and pinched his cheek. “Aww,you’re so cute when you’re vulnerable.”

“W-what?”He couldn’t help it. Alejandro had completely lost his composure inthis surreal situation. And he was losing more as he drank in more ofhis surroundings.

“Scaredof your first official night as Mr. Heather?” She teased, running afinger along his collar bone.

Swallowinghard, Alejandro was very, uncomfortably aware of the canopy bed withgold satin sheets and matching curtains. The bedroom itself wasequally high-end luxury: the walls were aquariums full of variousexotic and colorful fish. A potted palm tree sat in one corner nextto a plush velvet armchair and an old-school record player.

“Ah…giveme a moment to collect myself?” Alejandro managed.

“Yeah.”Heather chuckled as she carefully climbed off of the bed and stoodup. “I want to be seduced tonight, Alejandro. Level 10 of yourspecial charm, got it?”

“Yes,ma’am.” Alejandro swallowed again. In his mind’s eye, his facewas an even darker shade of red than before. The same shade as thefreshest, ripest tomatoes in Mama’s little garden out back.

Nervously,Alejandro watched as Heather sashayed towards the record player.There was only one record and his heart sank deeper in his chestbecause he knew exactly what it was. It cemented the legitimacy ofthis bizarre daydream. There was one song in the universe that hookedhim and pierced him right through the heart. This one song drew outevery sappy, saccharine emotion in his body. He swore it’d be themost romantic thing ever to make love to someone he washead-over-heels crazy for.

Thesong started up, and Alejandro closed his eyes while he let out along, slow breath. For a few moments, he let himself enjoy the rhythmof the song and get lost in this weird, but strangely welcomeself-indulgent dream. Because it was just a dream. And because it wasjust a dream, he could thoroughly enjoy what was about to happenconsequence and guilt-free…

“Al!Al! HEY AL!” Owen’s scratchy voice sliced through everythingworse than a record scratch.

Alejandro’seyes snapped open to the big buffoon grabbing him by the shouldersand shaking him like a salt shaker with little contents left.Thankfully, the big oaf stopped as soon as he realized Alejandro wasawake.

“Hey,buddy. I’m so glad you’re awake! Are you okay?” The wordstumbled out of Owen’s mouth in one big rush.

“Yes,”Alejandro growled through gritted teeth.

“I’mso glad!” Owen wailed, diving towards him and ensconcing him in atight bear hug. “I thought you died!”

Alejandrowas sure death was imminent from being snapped in half with everypassing moment and Owen squeezing that much tighter.

“Lethim go before you kill him, you big lug!” Heather cried.

“Oh…yeah…heheh….Sorry.”Owen immediately let go. Alejandro hit that dreaded worn-out couchwith a heavy thud.

AsAlejandro tried to collect himself and his bearings, he felt like thewind had been completely knocked out of his lungs now. His attentionzeroed in on Heather. This was his Heather: eternally grumpy, quickto anger, and mean to the core Heather. Currently, Owen was thetarget of her piranha-based ire. He cowered slightly, taking a stepback as she chewed him out, and Alejandro could swear he saw aglint of canines in her mouth.

“Alright,alright…” Owen snickered. “I’ll leave you alone with yourboyfriend.”

“He’snot my boyfriend!” Heather barked.

“Riigght.”Owen winked at Alejandro, clicked his tongue, and wiggled his browsobnoxiously as he bowed out of the room.

Heather’sdemeanor fell slightly once it was just her and Alejandro in theroom. Alone. The gravity of the situation pressed down on Alejandro.Normally, he’d take this opportunity to flirt very openly andobnoxiously with her, but that weird honeymoon dream was just toofresh in his mind. It was one thing letting his unconscious mind playwith such an absurd scenario. It was another thing entirely to belooking at the real Heather, thinking about their current standingand dynamic, and then worrying about how smitten he must be toentertain fantasies like that so soon.

Heatwas crawling up his face again. He desperately hoped he could justplay it off as a slight fever when Heather finally looked back up athim.

“So…youcame to check on me?” His tone didn’t have the flirty element hewanted. Instead he just sounded matter-of-fact.

“No!”Heather’s face was slightly red and her fists clenched. “As if. Iheard you were lurking around Chris’ quarters and faintedunexpectedly. I came to see what you’re up to.”

“Howsweet of you.” This time hewas able to bounce back to his usual bravado. But he couldn’t helpthe doubt prickling at the back of his mind as he remembered bits andpieces of the scene in Chris’ quarters.

“Seriously,Alejandro. I’ve got my eyes on you.” She folded her arms andglared.

“Idon’t mind,” Alejandro replied with a low, flirtatious growl.“I’m quite a sight to behold.”

“Shutup.”

Alejandrogiggled.

“SHUT.UP.”

“I’llbe fine, by the way.” Alejandro gingerly sat up, touching his ribsto make sure Owen hadn’t cracked anything.

“Areyou sure?” Heather asked despite herself. She even took a few stepscloser. “Owen’s a pretty big guy-”

“Aww…”Alejandro tilted his head back and batted his eyelashes at her.

“Guhh!You’re so insufferable!”

“Kissme better?” Alejandro made an exaggeratedly dreamy sigh.

Heatherplaced a palm in his face, then turned and stomped off withoutanother word.

Onceshe left and Alejandro couldn’t hear her retreating footstepsanymore, the room felt that much smaller and unbearably silent. Themore he thought about her, the more his heart started roaring in hisears and a blush crept up his face again. Images of her now flashedthrough his mind followed by visions of an older Heather.

Ifhe were a cartoon character, there’d be clouds of steam pouring outof his ears by now. He was thankful for the thin blanket covering hislegs. Wait? Where’d this blanket come from? He pulled up one cornerof it and blushed even harder at the name stitched onto one of thecorners in gold thread: Heather.

Suddenlyhe was gripped by an insatiable, irrational urge. The strange pendantentered his mind. He started pawing at his neck, finding only histrademark bull pendant. Then he rifled through all of the pockets inhis pants and even went so far as emptying out both of his boots.After that, he sprung up and pulled the couch apart, digging undercushions and picking through the holes and patches he could reach. Hestopped after a few minuteswhen he realized how foolish he might look and the fact that anyonecould walk into the room at any time.

Blowingout a long breath, he tuckedhis feet under his legs and ran his fingers through his hair, hatinghow hot his face was and trying to regain his composure. A strongsense of disappointment gripped him as he realized that Chris, Chef,or that Daniel guy had probably taken the pendant.

Therewas only one thing to do now: meditate on his long list of pettyschemes and pranks to pull on Owen. He just couldn’t focus on thegame right now because a lot of his plans were, of course, tied intostopping her…

the ethical debate is.....a thing i guess. while the audience and our heroes are on the side of attempting to save kawalsky that doesn't necessarily mean that kennedy's point is entirely void. it's a small picture versus big picture argument. however, kawalsky has the right to his body and the parasite is unwelcome so. yeetus the goa'uld fetus.

why must they subject me so much to seeing this body horror? whyyyy.

1. A Somaal Universe by @kaikamahine | Steven Universe | 7.5k

Connie flips over the next card. “'Most likely to -’” She reads out loud, and then dissolves into laughter and has to start over, propping the card up on her bump. “'Most likely to freak out when you go into labor and break the speed limit getting to the hospital?’” 

“Pearl,” Amethyst and Jasper say in unison.

Heather Says: It was really difficult to choose between this and Favor For Your Four-Chambered Heart as favorite Elizabeth fic for the year, but in the end this one won out because it was one of the first fics this year that made me well and truly happy.

2. The home front by aesc | Stargate Atlantis | 10k

“This had better be the Sheppard residence,” Rodney says, brilliant, agitated life and volume against a monotonous day and Dave’s subdued welcome, “because I’ve been driving around for hours and if I ever find the woman who did the voice on my GPS system I’m going to personally amputate her vocal cords.”

Heather Says: I read this in the pool, precariously balanced on the top step with my body angled weirdly so that I wasn’t holding my phone over the water. I started it before I got in the pool, of course, but I couldn’t put it on hold long enough to swim, so I finished it in the water.

3. Junk Cheap by DevilDoll | Stargate Atlantis | 13.5k

If you were thinking you’d love to read an AU where Rodney is a college professor and John owns a junk shop, this is the story for you.

Heather Says: This might be my favorite SGA fic that I found this year, which is funny since going into the fandom I would have told you that I’d prefer to read fics set in canon. I mean, c’mon. Atlantis? Why would I want to read anything set anywhere else? But this fic perfectly captured John’s lazy personality and Rodney’s crotchety... everything. It’s fabulous.

4. Unidentified by fiercelydreamed | Stargate Atlantis | 30k

Fourteen years, eight months, and seven days after John and Rodney meet, the clock starts all over again.

Heather Says: I’m not typically one for the amnesia trope. I’ve found some good fic for it, but most of the time either the angst or the second-hand embarrassment gets me too hard and I end up exiting out of the fic. This fic was intricate and engaging and introduces a Rodney just off-center from the Rodney that we know.

5. Black Helicopters at Dawn by whizzy | Stargate Atlantis | 240k

Screw the bet. Rodney was going to prove the existence of extraterrestrial intelligence. Oh, and incidentally, he might just catch the United States Air Force with their pants around their ankles.

Heather Says: This fic is long. And beautiful, and sad, and kind of a lot. Also if you’re like me you’ll have to find the third part of it on some weird, sort of sketchy website that hopefully didn’t give you viruses. Or if you’re really desperate you can ask me to send you a copy since I think I still have it somewhere.

6. Like a Lightning Strike by miss_aphelion | Hannibal | 71k

In a world where omegas are instant celebrities and treated like royalty, Will just wants to be left alone. So he keeps what he is a secret, managing to avoid the spotlight and the restrictions that come with it for nearly twenty years.

Then a case goes wrong, and his secrets start to unravel before the entire world—and even more worrying, it happens in front of Hannibal, the alpha that was already fascinated with him before he knew what he was.

Heather Says: Okay, so remember how I said I wasn’t crazy about the amnesia trope? I am really not crazy about the A/B/O trope. Done well enough it’s intriguing, but I read a really awful one way back in the day that basically scarred me for life. That said, this fic came along and hooked me hard. It hasn’t been updated since April, which is disappointing, but it’s well worth the read, even unfinished.

7. Lord, Save Me from Your Followers by anamatics | Supergirl | 27k

Kara, perhaps out of a want for thoroughness in her story, perhaps out of a Millennial-born urge to creep on a the social media of a woman she finds intriguing, discovers that Lena Luthor has a pretty active following on Instagram one afternoon not long after their first meeting. She debates it, just for a moment, before following Lena.

Heather Says: Don’t watch Supergirl? That’s fine! Technically I’ve only seen a couple episodes myself! Read this anyway! This fic has that perfect realness to it that I’ve only found in a very select group of fics and it has cute girls kissing to boot.

8. hood & glove by @fahye | Yuri On Ice | 12k 

“I don’t mess with the fae,” Otabek says.

"I'm not asking you to mess with them," JJ flat-out lies. 

Heather Says: I’ve tried to say things about this three times now. There are fairies. Otabek is a hero. The king of the fairies fell in love with a human and the weather is fucked up. And there is some truly spectacular art within.

  9. With Fire in Their Eyes by @asukaskerian | Yuri On Ice | 8k

He lands butterfly-light in a swirl of hair and glittering gauze, and the ceiling crashes to the rink all around him.

His ears are ringing with heartbeats, his efforts, the cries of the crowd. The rink wobbles under him -- must have landed a bit wrong but he can work through it. Only there are things strewn all over the ice; people usually know to wait until the end to throw roses and tokens and --

Not applause. Screams. The light is wrong because a fourth of the ceiling projectors are missing. The sky is dark. No stars. Something gleams behind the broken sky. And moves. Something he can't -- won't -- something.

Something that's looking at him.

Heather Says: It’s a Pacific Rim/Yuri On Ice crossover. What more could you want?

10. What We Pretend We Can’t See by @gyzym | Harry Potter | 131 k

Seven years out from the war, Harry learns the hard truth of old history: it’s never quite as far behind you as you thought.

Heather Says: I’ve been a fan of gyzym’s stuff since way back in 2009? 2010? Whatever year it was, it was on livejournal back when Inception was a thing. So when I got the notification that she wrote something new? And that the new thing she’d written was 130k of Draco/Harry? I was over the moon. 

11. No Less Unthinkable by @rageprufrock | Yuri On Ice | 79k

In which Katsuki Yuuri fights a losing battle with chronic anxiety, the quadruple Salchow, and his own judgment four drinks in — but wins the war.

Heather Says: I’ve been affectionately dubbing this fic the slutty Yuuri picture show, because damn. The porn itself is exquisitely written, yes, but more than that is the way Yuuri himself is written. That realness that I was talking about above is very prominent here too. 

12. Slithering by @astolat | Harry Potter | 27k

Draco found the nest down in the Manor’s cellars, while he was clearing them out.

Heather Says: I have a weakness for fics with snakes, okay.

13. Hermione Granger’s Hogwarts Crammer for Delinquents on the Run by @waspabi | Harry Potter | 93k

'You’re a wizard, Harry’ is easier to hear from a half-giant when you’re eleven, rather than from some kids on a tube platform when you’re seventeen and late for work.

Heather Says: In addition to just being really fucking great all around, the soundtrack to this fic lead me to some of the best music that I’ve listened to this year.

14. the king of oak by @picqueries | Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them | 38k 

The first thing Percival Graves does after being released back into the world is buy a new wand. He's at Greymalkin's for ten minutes and the only wand that works for him is raw aspen, whiter than bone and so rough that Graves gives himself a splinter conjuring a storm of birds. The wand—dragon heartstring, a most unusual wand for an American wizard, according to a flustered Greymalkin—feels wild, and Graves empties half his wallet on the counter and keeps his hand on his new wand all the way home.

The second thing he does is quit his job, because honestly.

("Grindelwald did his research before he put on your face," Seraphina says reasonably. "And it's not like you're open with your personal life. He has us all fooled."

"He wore scorpion stickpins!" Graves shoots back, somewhat less reasonably.

Seraphina looks at Graves, his pressed creases, his immaculate shirt, the red ruby cufflinks he's wearing to hide the starved brittleness of his wrists. "I'm sorry," she says. It is not enough to make him stay.)

The third thing he does is get jumped by Credence Barebone in an alley.

Heather Says: Okay, okay, okay. But. Wizards are descended from fairies. Should I say it again for those in the back? Wizards are descended from fairies. Honestly, even if this fic had been horribly written I’d be hooked just on that concept alone. Fortunately it’s written beautifully, and is a complete work of art.

15. apocrypha by aerynlallaboso | Dishonored | 97k

The Eighth year of the reign of Empress Emily Kaldwin, First of her Name, the second year without a whisper from the Outsider, is the year the Void chooses to mark the end of an era.

Heather Says: This wasn’t the first Dishonored fic that I read, but it was the first one I’d read that was longer than 5k, and I was just so goddamned pleased with everything about it.

16. A Year In Toussaint by @astolat | The Witcher | 30k

Geralt had no damn idea what to do with a vineyard when Anna Henrietta gave him Corvo Bianco, but he figured it couldn’t be that bad.

Heather Says: Between the Stargate Atlantis and Harry Potter, I read a lot of astolat’s fic this year. I’d noticed that she’d been writing fic for the Witcher, but didn’t much care because I never really played the games. But I was bored one day, so I read one of her Witcher fics. Then another. And another. And then I went out and bought the games. This one is my favorite.

17. wild peaches by @notbecauseofvictories | The Labyrinth | 3.5k

The morning after Sarah Williams defeats the Goblin King, she gets up and makes toast.

Heather Says: The feel of this fic is basically what I want out of everything that I read for the rest of my life. Just the right amount of magic, but eerie and timeless. I have read this fic at least five times since it was published and will probably go on to read it another five times next year.

18. where the weeds take root by @beenghosting | Supernatural | 30k 

“Are you happy? Y’know. Just—being here,” Dean says, gesturing to the yard with his beer bottle. “Being with—I mean, you used to fight in celestial wars and—and save the world. Now you’re growing vegetables and talking about chickens.”

Heather Says: I really adore slice of life fic, especially when it’s an after-the-war-is-over sort of thing rather than just some fluffy AU that the characters have been stuffed into. I haven’t touched anything Supernatural related in years, not because I didn’t love the characters, but because the show was on this slowly creeping spiral downwards, and I just couldn’t. This though, feels like a very organic end for my two favorites, so thank you for giving me closure.

19. Heart and Home by lc2l | Les Mis | 97k

In an alternate Paris, werewolves occupy the majority of the ruling classes, making and adjusting policy to suit their interests. The punishments for a human attacking a werewolf can be brutal, unless they have the protection of a wolf pack.

How this translates to ‘claim Grantaire as your mate to get him out of prison’ is something Enjolras is still trying to get his head around, but he’s never been one to give up on a cause even when it’s sleeping on his sofa.

Heather Says: I, like many other people, watched the movie adaptation of Les Mis several years ago. My ex-girlfriend liked the play, but I’d never seen it. Loved the movie. Heather Says: The thing about high school AUs that no one ever tells you is that as you grow up, one of two things happens. Either the high school AU in question triggers a massive influx of nostalgia that basically cripples you emotionally or it has you cringing away from the screen, groping blindly until you can ex out of the tab. I’m happy to say that this one is more of the former.

Heather Says: This fic soothed my soul during a particular rough patch this year. There are dates and misunderstandings and some pretty intense UST and it’s just wonderful all around.

Heather Says: When the most recent chapter of this came out, I ended up going back and rereading it, because I was on the beach, and it seemed like a really good time to read about mermen and flying bird people and I am just. So excited for this fic all over again.

Animation Stars, Candyman, Third 'Last Fan Standing' Added To Wizard World Virtual Experiences; Free Video Q&A Streamed Live On Twitch, YouTube, Facebook

Wizard Brands, Inc. (OTCBB:WIZD) today announced the addition of several new events to its Wizard World Virtual Experiences (www.wizardworldvirtual.com) lineup in the coming weeks. Since last March, Wizard World has conducted 185 free Q&As with celebrities, artists, authors and more, as well as paid live video chats, virtual photo ops, autographs and recorded video messages. 

Five voice actors from favorite animation series kick off the new slate on Sunday, as Lauren Tom ("Disenchantment," "Teen Titans Go!"), Olivia D'Abo ("Invader Zim," "Star Wars: The Clone Wars"), William Salyers ("Regular Show," "Morel Orel"), Nikki Soohoo ("Shimer and Shine," "Heathers" and Deedee Magno Hall ("Steven Universe," "The All-New Mickey Mouse Club") begin at 4 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. PT. Then on Thursday, February 11, it’s the return of the game show “Last Fan Standing,” with host Bruce Campbell, at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT ($10 to play, free to watch). On Saturday, February 13, two of the leads in the 1992 horror film Candyman, Tony Todd ("The Candyman") and Xander Berkeley ("Trevor Lyle") will talk about the movie and their careers starting at 4 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. PT.

This is in addition to numerous previously scheduled events, including Stargate SG1 and Atlantis stars Joe Flanigan ("Lt. Colonel John Sheppard"), Teryl Rothery ("Dr. Janet Fraiser"), Corin Nemec ("Jonas Quinn"), Cliff Simon ("Ba'al"), Alexis Cruz ("Skaara/Klorel"), Paul McGillion ("Dr. Carson Beckett") and David Nykl ("Dr. Radek Zelenka") on Saturday, January 30 at 4 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. PT, followed that day by action film hero Dolph Lundgren (Rocky IV, Masters of the Universe) at 7 pm.. ET  / 4 p.m. PT.

Then on Saturday, February 6, it’s another doubleheader, beginning with “Saved by the Bell” standout Lark Voorhies (1 p.m ET / 10 a.m. PT) and the legendary Morgan Fairchild (“Friends,” “Falcon Crest”) (4 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. PT) in their respective Wizard World debuts. A week later, it’s two more big panels with the cast of the horror film series Hatchet, including Kane Hodder ("Victor Crowley") and Danielle Harris ("Marybeth") on Saturday, February 13 at 1 p.m. ET / 10 a.m. ET, followed later that day by the third installment of the “Charmed Against Humanity” game, open for a limited audience, and featuring Holly Marie Combs, Brian Krause and Drew Fuller, at 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT., sandwiched around the Candyman panel. On Sunday, February 14, a special Valentine’s Day edition of Wizard World Virtual Experiences features Legally Blonde standouts Jessica Cauffiel ("Margo") and Alanna Ubach ("Serena”), starting at 4 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. PT.

Viewers have also enjoyed “Rewatch Wednesdays,” when Wizard World replays highlights of the previous weekend’s panels with commentary from staff and fan experts. This week, fans can discuss the panel with “Saturday Night Live” player Chris Kattan.

During each session, the celebrities will participate in a FREE live moderated video Q&A, followed by one-on-one video chats, recorded videos, virtual photo ops and autographs, customarily one week later.
