S39: Homeward Sound
{In a brief flashback, we see the Mudwangs attempt to do what they can in the next day to help the Fair Weather Maiden get safely to shore: Shakan doing his best to help stabilize the wounded; Vax throws himself into whatever tasks keep his mind busy, including spending an eventful night in the crows nest; Rat continues to seek out the Captain while also helping keep the boat sea worthy. He also takes a moment to pragmatically search the Ice Queen's quarters, finding several official looking forms, a messenger bag, some fine wine, and a sealed letter bearing the seal of Duchess Ullans.}
Back on shore, the Kjollden authorities take passengers and crew members alike aside for questioning as to the events of the journey across the Sound. As Shakan and Vax check in, Rat, having already begun to drain the Ice Queen's wine stores, begins to heckle some guards much to the enjoyment of nearby market goers.
Shakan is sequestered and questioned along with some Wevir. The officials are dismissive of the events are relayed by the sorcerer, and after several minutes dismiss the bunch. The Wevir confide with Shakan that Kjollden in general do not put much stock in tales of the fantastic. Vax strikes up a conversation with another passenger frustrated by the lackadaisical investigation. A well built Wevir by the name of Gnarldin Whelk, he was on the way back to Bøfkasmaur Academy after a semester at sea studying sea creatures. Vax mentioned that perhaps they could travel together, and Gnarldin was happy to accept.
Eventually, the guards grew tired of Rat's badgering and brushed him off, giving the bard the chance to sneak past the watch and catch up with First Mate Ullis and Captain Eremies. Having just finished being questioned themselves, the Captain was in a raving fit, and Ullis could do little to calm down his officer. Rat offered some wine and counsel, hoping to learn more from the captain. He also offered the book Shakan had given him, hoping the rumor of the captains love of books would prove an olive branch. Instead, it further incensed the captain, who lashed out at Rat when he read a story and found nothing wrong. Rat inquired whether it was simply a different version, but the Captain seemed convinced that this was not how the tale had been told before, and stormed off. Ullis offered Rat a position on the ship once it was repaired, and the sailor said he would consider it.
As the three travelers reconvened, along with Gnarldin and Genbee, one of Weylin Enright's servants, an alarum was sounded. Looking at the front of the official mansion: flanked by a phalanx of Kjollden knights, Governor Trevess emerged to calm the people down. Keeping a straight face amidst some unexpected flatulence and catcalls from the crowd, the Governor offered his seemingly heartfelt assurances that the sea paths would be kept safe. Leaving shortly after, the Mudwangs spent time in the afternoon light refilling their personal stores- Vax getting new arrows and passing up on a fantastical quiver, Shakan getting some health potions and a healers kit, and Rat getting some basic adventuring essentials. Restocked, the 5 men gather at a quiet, upscale bar to discuss their course of action.
---
In the cozy confines of the Polite Onion Bar, the group reminisces over lost friends. Gnarldin reveals he lost his research partner in the attack about the Maiden. As Rat tries to pry out some more information about some of the more terrific things of the sea, Gnarldin does share the scant stories and tales hes gathered about vicious sea creatures known as the sahugain. Talk of past tribesmen prompts a thought in Shakan, and he asks Rat to go to the bar along with Gnarldin and Genbee, who in his drunkness has begun to be a fit more confrontational.
Vax and Shakan then spend several minutes talking about their situation as the last two of the original Mudwangs. Questions as to whether the tribe still existed, or if other members could be added, and what the nature of their alliance was at this point? In an effort to protect himself, Shakan even offered Vax the chance to leave if his own interests lay elsewhere. The warlock, thoughtful, replied that without Shakan's friendship and knowledge, he very well may not be alive at this point. The half-elf also noted that given both of their was no place better to go than the Academy, for both of them had many answers to find, and fate seemed to want them together.
By the end of the night, they'd secured lodgings for themselves. Genbee, brazen with liquid courage, emerged from his seemingly shy shell and found a bed with a local barmaid. Gnarldin promised to help them make the trip to Bøfkasmaur. Shakan revealed he'd learned that Larry Dennit the Younger, his rival, had made a bit of a name for himself in his absence. Rat then prompted Vax to reveal the letter that had been discovered in the Ice Queen's lodging, and they learned that the leadership under Duchess Ullans were preparing-or plotting- for the impending passing of the Duchess. Knowing they were too far away from the Capitol to impact these proceedings, they nonetheless swore to keep ears open for whispers of possible political dealing.
The next morning, Vax Shadowsworn, acolyte Shakan Bake, Pi Rat the charmer, Gnarldin Whelk, and Genbee Nyicegue paid for passage on a convoy to the Academy. An uneventful two days pass, and late in the afternoon as they crest a tall hill, the countryside opens in front of them, revealing the Bofkasmaur Valley. Amidst the rolling forests and grasslands stands a lone, towering monolith. With only the Stag Mountain to draw attention away, it was hard not to be captivated by the onyx black rocks of the monolith. Within it's jagged pillars were a series of bridges, roads, and ladders connecting several groupings of buildings, towers, and squares. It was a small city built over generations amongst the rocky crags. With a sigh, Shakan welcomed the company to Bøfkasmaur Academy.
