Corindus Vascular Robotics has received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the first automated robotic movement designed for its CorPath GRX platform.
Called “Rotate on Retract” (RoR), the proprietary software feature is the first automated robotic movement in the technIQ Series for the CorPath GRX platform. It allows the operator to quickly navigate to a targeted lesion by automatically rotating the guidewire upon joystick retraction.
In December 2017, Corindus completed the first commercial installation of its CorPath GRx robotic system outside of the US. The system was purchased by the Apex Heart Institute in Ahmedabad, India. Together the organizations will develop a training center for interventional cardiologists on using the platform in robotic-assisted percutaneous coronary interventions.

Preclinical data presented at the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) Conference in October 2017 demonstrated a significant reduction in wiring time among a highly-experienced group of physicians when comparing robotic wiring versus robotic wiring with RoR enabled.
Following the software’s CE Mark approval in January 2018, interventional cardiologists Arif Al Nooryani, M.D. and Wael Aboushokka, M.D. of Al Qassimi Hospital in Sharjah, Dubai, UAE, performed the first percutaneous coronary interventional procedures (PCI) in the world using RoR.
Today Nelson Bernardo, M.D., Medical Director of the Peripheral Vascular Laboratory at MedStar Heart Institute, will be performing a robotic-assisted peripheral intervention utilizing RoR, which will be broadcast live to the Cardiovascular Research Technologies (CRT) Meeting in Washington, D.C.
“This first-of-its-kind automation software has the potential to extend the clinical capabilities of CorPath GRX in more complex procedures,” said J. Aaron Grantham, M.D., Chief Medical Officer of Corindus and practicing Interventional Cardiologist at Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute. “Bringing consistency to interventional procedures through advanced wire movements has the opportunity to reduce procedure time and enhance patient outcomes.”
“FDA clearance of this new software feature marks the first step on our path to full autonomous navigation,” said Mark Toland, President and CEO of Corindus. “Over the next several years, we will focus on automating the techniques of world-class physicians to make them available to every hospital with a vascular robotic program. In January 2018, Corindus announced a partnership with the Mayo Clinic to launch preclinical studies exploring the use of telestenting. This a robotic treatment for percutaneous coronary interventions that can be remotely operated by physicians. Corindus said there is a global shortage of PCI operators; telestenting could serve as a solution to geographic and workforce barriers.

3. CABG X 3, in a 64 yrs old man with triple vessel disease, severe COPD (FEV1-0.8) and severe anemia (Hb -8g%). Follow up 5 yrs later doing good.

5. Emergency CABG x 3 within hours of completion of coronary angiogram in a 40 yr old man with a negative Stress test and a 95% Left main stenosis on coronary angiogram. Climbed a flight of stairs on postop day 3. Discharged home postoperative day 5. At 5 yrs Followup: doing fine.

9. Aortic valve replacement, extensive dealcification and aortoplasty for fragile aorta in a 40 yrs old, 40 kg lady with severe calcific bicuspid aortic stenosis & a small aortic root : 19mm. Preoperative near systemic PASP: 82 mm Hg, EF = 20% and Peak Gradient across Aortic valve – 175. Postopertive echocardiogram: EF – 45% and PASP – 29 mm Hg. Follow up: doing great 6 yrs later.
10. MVR and Tricuspid annuloplasty in a 40 yr old lady with Severe Mitral Insufficiency, severe Tricuspid Insufficiency and suprasystemic PH – PASP 102 mmHg. Sildenafil (Viagra) postoperative for recalcitrant PH. On last echo: PASP-35, excellent prosthetic valve function, No TR. Completed her seventh anniversary a few days ago.
11. 71 yrs old, 100% LAD, 19mm Aortic calcific annulus …..Root enlargement + AVR (Mosaic) + CABG. Smooth uneventful postoperative recovery. At 5 yr: followup: doing great.
12. AVR with a large valve…27 mm in a 23 yrs old, 185 cms tall, Engineering student, with a 28 mm vegetation on the aortic valve despite 6 wks of antibiotics. Discharged home day 7 and on 5 yrs follow up asymptomatic.
13. AVR in a 28 yrs old young man with severe aortic regurgitation and poor LV function – EF= 25 %. Smooth recovery and discharge on postop day 6. Sadly died 6 months later with RVD.
14. MVR in a 34 yrs old man with a 7.5 cms LA clot completely adherent to Lt.Atrium. At 4 yrs follow up: doing fine.
15. MVR with TA in 6 patients with Aneurysmal LA: 8 - 10 cms: 3 in Jan’08 and 2 in Dec’07 and 1 in Sept’08. All discharged home 5 - 8 days postoperatively and doing fine at 4 -5 yrs follow up.

16. Clearance of tight Right Ventricular Outflow Tract obstruction,14 yr old girl - From
Hegar size 6 to Hegar size 18. She had a Double chambered right ventricle – DCRV - a rare entity. RV proximal chamber pressure – 225mmHg. Arguably, highest recorded, in history. Postoperative echocardiogram: RVSP – 60 mm Hg. Doing great 6 yrs later.
17. Intraventricular Tunnel Repair and Pulmonary volvotomy in a 8 yr old girl with Double outlet Right ventricle (DORV),doubly commited VSD and Pulmonic stenosis. Postopertive echocardiogram: Successful VSD channeling to aorta, no residual vsd or RVOTO. Fine on 6 yrs follow up.
18. Total correction done in a 16 yr old boy from Gujurat, with a complex congenital disease - Partial AV Canal, persistent Lt. SVC, Cleft mitral, Pulmonic stenosis and RV pressure of 140 mmHg. Preop O2 sat – 66. Postop O2 sat – 99. Asymptomatic on 3 yrs follow up.
19. Excision of Subaortic membrane,VSD closure and PDA ligation in a 6 yr old boy with Downs syndrome. Both, VSD closure and membrane excision done via right atrium. No LVOTO or residual shunt on last echo done 4 months postop. At 4 yrs follow up doing good.
20. Triple transfixation and Clipping in a 7 yr old girl with a Hypertensive Patent Ductus Arteriosus, PAP– 125/60 (normal – 25/10). Post op PAP 45/15. At 5 yrs follow up: doing fine.

21. Excision of an Intracardiac mass in the RA, RV and completely occluding the IVC (with multiple liver abscesses) under circulatory arrest in a 49 yr old senior ONGC executive. Postoperative echocrdiogram: complete removal of the mass.

AVR in a 84 yr old arab lady from UAE. She had severe Aortic Stenosis, G6PD deficiency, severe Anemia (Hb 7.8g%), COPD and CRF (Sr Creatinine – 2.9 mg ). Discharged day 6 and flew to Dubai on postoperative day 12. Doing well on 8 weeks follow-up.

Physicians like surgeon Dr. Jason Chuen of the Austin Hospital in Melbourne say that 3D printing medical organs help doctors practice surgical procedures such as placing a stent in a heart. Dr. Chuen advised that with a model or organoid made from images of the actual patient, he could assess the bioprinted model much easier than the patient’s heart.
Evaluating the bioprinted model allowed him to make sure that the stent he would use was the correct size. Testing the size of a stent in a real patient clearly isn’t possible because of the invasiveness of the surgery. 3D printing technology makes this a viable option.
Organoids mimic actual organs only smaller opening up endless possibilities for everything from testing medical procedures to learning more about diseases. Medical companies such as Organovo are experimenting with 3D printing intestinal tissue and livers to study these organs in vitro and to help develop drug treatments for diseases.
The company announced in May 2018 that they had preclinical information on how liver tissue functions in a study of type one tyrosinemia. Tyrosinemia is a liver condition that affects how the body metabolizes tyrosine, an amino acid, because of its deficiency in the body.
Wake Forest Institute utilized a related approach to develop a brain organoid that could allow scientists to discover new drugs and for disease modeling. “In May 2018, they publicized that their organoids have a fully cell-based, functional blood-brain barrier that mimics normal human anatomy.” Wake Forest is also working on printing 3D skin grafts to apply to burn patients.
Rehearsing Surgical Procedures
Surgical rehearsal using bioprinted organoids helps surgeons’ practice to perform surgeries faster to reduce patient trauma, and the cost savings are substantial. It also allows surgeons to navigate complicated medical procedures.
Surgeries can cost $2,000 an hour so reducing how long it takes to do surgery can decrease the cost of operations considerably. Surgeons have rehearsed a broad range of procedures from spinal operations to full-face transplants. This 3D printing medical application is becoming a routine practice.
In Belfast in January 2019, surgeons practiced before a young woman’s kidney transplant successfully using a bioprinted model of the donor’s kidney. Her father was the organ donor, and there were many complications because his kidney had a dangerous cyst and his blood group wasn’t compatible with hers. Bioprinting allowed surgeons to find the location of the cyst and assess how big it was.
Physicians in Dubai operated on a patient who had a severe cerebral aneurysm using a bioprinted map of her blood vessels to traverse her arteries safely. This surgery was complicated as the aneurysm was in four veins.
3D Printing Helps Find Alternative Drug Treatments for Patients
Patients suffering from a variety of ailments often need to take several drugs each day for treatment. 3D printing allows researchers to customize medicines possibly reducing many pills to one. With 3D printing, scientists can practice embedding more than one drug in a single capsule designed to release each drug at different times. Researchers at Wake Forest are already 3D printing muscle, bone, and ear structures that they’ve transplanted in animals to see how they would function in humans.
