if Victor veloci was a deinonychus, could his name be deino
Daniel deino
terror
he likes his species of dinosaur so much that he named himself after it
do u think he moved to live away from the cave he was trapped in, or do u think he stayed because he didn't want to leave it since it was the last place he was before the extinction event?

You got…Ultra Magnus + Krok!
[With Ultra Magnus] You seem very adept at all kinds of skills that lean towards intelligence or academia, which leads me to believe you caught this mechs heart, and it's a two package deal with Minimus. One unique trait in your relationship would be his love letters hidden in those essays and the ones you would send back. No one would expect anything but boring droning in them, which makes it the perfect hiding place for some lovey-dovey. True crime is something you don't need a podcast for; Ultra Magnus is more than happy to discuss various court cases he has overseen and dictated. From the absolute mundane to a killer of thousands, he has got you covered. He has learnt to gift you various morning drinks from all around the universe, from teas to powders to coffees or hot chocolates, and with each one he has a whole talk about the history of it from where it came from.
~~~~~~~~~ [With Krok] The first thing that jumped out at me was your sense of unwanted leadership. You both share that trait significantly. Krok finds it nice to have someone else around who can take the lead whenever he is overwhelmed or uncertain, a second voice of reason when he can't decide how to save their asses for the third time that day. The leader would totally restaurant hop with you, opting to try new kinds of food that you can eat utilizing his holoform. Eventually, he got around to bringing you some cooking items to follow some alien recipe books together. He never understood the fascination with stars seeing as he has spent so much time around them, but that doesn't stop him from finding a room on the ship with a large window straight above the bed. He doesn't really stargaze, but he does like gazing at you while you do.
———-
Authors Note - I was stuck between Deathsaurus and Krok for con, so I hope I picked the better choice! Also, you seem like such a fantastic person; I call this 'stop myself from trying to befriend all my anons.'
Never alone - Chapter Two - Soulmate AU
AO3
Previous - Here - Next
Master List
Hello! Faster than ever before, I present you the second chapter of Never Alone!
I chose to not describe Marinette with her clothes or hairstyle so that you can imagine her as you want! In my mind, since she's a fashion designer, I imagine her always changing her clothes and very fashionable. I don't see her with her pigtails either. But it's up to you as to how you see her!
Also, I'm French, so if there are any grammatical mistakes, do not hesitate to tell me so I can come back and correct them!
Two months in the new school year, and Marinette was already exhausted. While she had a very calm summer filled with outings with her friends, she was now drowning in work. Jagged wanted her to design his newest album cover, and Clara Nightingale has asked for a new outfit for a music video.
 At school, Alya and Marinette were doing their best to find a good trip for the end of the year. The school had a decent amount of money that was set aside specifically for their class trip, but they would need to organize an event or two if they wanted to go somewhere outside of Europe. They were lucky enough that their class’ trip was set for their first year of high school: Mrs. Mendelieiv’s class’ trip was set for the next year, right before the first set of exams for the baccalaureat.
 Along with all that, there was also her duty as Ladybug. Hawkmoth has been relatively calm during the summer, but as soon as school started again in September, he released his akumas again.
 Except, now, they were more brutal than ever before.
 Ladybug cursed as the Akuma managed to deeply cut her on her left side. She watched as Chat jumped in as she collapsed on the roof they were battling. True to his promise, Chat took his job more seriously and only joked during patrols now. He also stopped to jump mindlessly in front of her to save her from a hit and actually tried to get both of them out of the way.
 The Akuma they were fighting was a dangerous one. His arm has been transformed into two big shears, and they hurt like hell.
 Ladybug watched with fascination as her hand was tainted with her own blood. She couldn’t remember if an Akuma had hurt her that much before… She knew for sure that she was bleeding too heavily and she was getting a bit dizzy. They would need to end the fight very soon.
 Standing up, she took advantage of the distraction Chat provided to trip the Akuma with her yoyo, succeeding in tripping him. Quickly, Chat snatched the man’s bow and used cataclysm on it.
 As she cleansed the Akuma and watched the light heal Paris and herself as she cast the cure, the red-clothed superhero couldn’t help but think it was time to contact the Justice League again.
 Back when they got their miraculous, she and Chat had contacted the Justice League of Europe to ask for help. They were just teenagers without any training entrusted to protect a whole city as big as Paris, and it was clear to them they couldn’t possibly do that alone.
 The person they had talked to at the moment had listened to them, took note and told them they would come back to them after informing the heroes of the issue in Paris. It was a month later that one of the heroes contacted them, informing them they would not intervene in Paris, as they have been doing a good job up until now and the miraculous cure healed everyone and repaired everything. They then give them words of encouragement before they cut the connection.
 Ladybug had then wanted to contact the Justice League of America before remembering they wouldn’t be able to do anything as France was certainly not under their jurisdiction.
 And thus, there they were, still two untrained teenagers, acting on instinct against people with magic powers.
 Great.
 She let Chat take care of the victim, still feeling the pain on her left side, even though it was healed and there was not a trace of blood left on her person.
 “Are you ok?”
 Ladybug watched as the victim was taken care of by some policemen and turned her attention to her partner.
 “I’m fine Chat. Sorry I had to let you handle everything.”
 “Hey, you were hurt and losing a lot of blood. It’s a wonder you could even stand up afterward.”
 The girl smiled. “Should we try to contact the JLE again?”
 Chat Noir sighed. “Even though they won’t intervene, they are watching closely what’s happening here. If they haven’t decided to step in yet, contacting them won’t change anything LB.”
 Ladybug sighed. “You’re right. Of course. I should go Chat, I’m about to transform back.”
 “Sure thing. I’ll see you later, then.”
Tumblr media
                                                                                               Back in her room, Marinette winced as she sat down on her bed.
 “Are you really ok Marinette?”
 Tikki was looking at her with her big, wide blue eyes. She was obviously worried.
 “I’m fine, just a bit sore. I’m lucky that the cure healed me, but I think I’ll still feel the pain for a few days.”
 While the cure healed her, the pain stayed for some time after, varying on the severity of the injury. Since her latest injure was pretty severe, it would hurt for a little while.
 “Alright, I still have some homework to do for tomorrow. You should eat something and go to sleep Tikki, you must be tired after today. There should be a cookie or two on my desk.”
 The kwami looked at her for a moment before flying over her desk, knowing it was useless to insist and there wasn’t anything she could do anyway. Even if she wished she could take Marinette’s pain away.
Tumblr media
                      “Alright girl, you said you found something for the trip?”
 It was early December now, and Marinette had asked Alya to join her in the school library to discuss the trip. The fashion designer took the laptop out of her bag and opened it to show her what she found.
 “So, you know how the trip also has to be educational? This is the Wayne Career Program. It’s designed for high school students. Each one of us would shadow someone in the firm as a sort of internship to learn about different professions.”
 “Putain, girl! That’s amazing. Wayne Enterprises have a lot of different sectors. I could totally work with the PR team if we can manage to secure a trip there. Plus it’s in Gotham, in America!”
 Alya literally squealed at the idea of traveling overseas.
 “Yeah, I’m a bit worried about that actually. You know it’s not really the safest place on Earth.”
 And what an understatement that was. Gotham was probably the city with the most crimes in the world. It would be a miracle if the school allowed them to go. But then again, the school board would do anything to up their reputation and a class winning an internship at WE… The principal would boast about it years after they had all graduated.
 “There is an essay we have to write to apply. I suggest we write it before we present the idea to Ms. Bustier. We also need to prepare arguments for her and the school board.”
 “No problem girl, I already have tons of arguments there.” The reporter showed her her notebook where there were two pages filled with arguments. The class president nodded, those were really good. She could really rely on her friend.
 “Well, that was quick. Those should be enough to convince them. On to the essay, then. ‘How do you think you can change the world?’”
 They spent hours after that, taking notes and making several drafts of the essay. It took them a week to have the actual final product and when they handed it to Ms. Bustier, she was delighted. It was decided they wouldn’t announce the destination of the trip to the class until they were sure it could be a possibility.
 Alya and Marinette had dropped hints about the destination though, to see if the class would actually like to go to Gotham.
 After a week or so, they knew they had chosen well.
 On Marinette’s birthday, on the 16th of December, after lunch where the whole class sang Happy birthday to her, the class president and the class deputy had a meeting with the principal and the board of the school.
 It was tough to convince them, and the meeting actually lasted the whole afternoon, but at the end of the day, they had all signed the papers that confirmed that the trip would happen in Gotham, should the two girls won the contest. They even agreed to unfreeze some more funds for it. This program would really look good on the school’s record.
 It was with a bright smile that they returned to class ten minutes before the end of the day bell and announced to everyone that the trip to Gotham has been confirmed. Using the classroom’s computer, the whole class witness as the two girls applied to the Wayne Career Program.
 Now, all they had to do was wait for an answer.
Tumblr media
                                                                                 Life after that was a bit calmer for Marinette, if you didn’t count the Akumas. She worried that they were more and more violent, and more often than not, she had lingering pain from injuries she got at Ladybug.
 But life was good. Lila had even stopped lying and was herself. Even if it means that she wasn’t very kind to anyone, even mocking all of them at times, the class would just scoff and roll their eyes at her antics. The designer still wouldn’t talk to her, but the atmosphere in the class was lighter than the previous year, and for that Marinette was grateful.
 They were all at an outdoor ice rink at the end of January when Marinette’s phone beeped with a notification.
 “Oh fucking shit, guys!”
 It caught everyone’s attention as the tiny Dupain-Cheng was not one to curse like that.
 “I just got an email for Mr. Wayne’s secretary! Our class is among the nine others to have won the contest! We are going to Gotham in May!”
 Everyone cheered at that, hugging each other and even going as far as carrying Marinette and Alya around, as it was their doing.
 “America, here we come!” shouted Kim.
 “You do realize that you will have to work extra hard on your English, right?” teased Max.
 “Oh, shit.”
 Everyone laughed at that, but it was agreed among themselves and their English teacher that they would all stay for an hour and a half after school to learn the language, up until their trip.
 “I can’t wait to see Gotham’s heroes in action!” squealed Alya.
 “Aren’t they vigilantes?” asked Mylène.
 “Same thing!”
 “Not quite, babe.” grinned Nino.
 Even Lila was smiling with them, and it was huge progress in their book.
 Marinette smiled, “We’ll be there for two weeks. The first week, we’ll be visiting around, and the second week will be dedicated to our internships. I will have to send a list of all our careers of interest to Mr. Wayne’s secretary, so they can organize who we will be shadowing. So, I’ll need you to send me those pieces of information this weekend, so I can send it on Monday, okay?”
 “Roger that, boss.”
 As Alya took her hand to skate with her around the rink, the baker’s daughter couldn’t help the huge smile on her lips. A year ago, there was a lot of tension in the class, and here they were, all laughing together and talking excitedly about the upcoming trip that their class president and deputy won them.
 She could hear Rose talking excitedly about the things she wanted to see in Gotham. She watched as Kim challenged Alix on God knows what and laughed as Max stated that he had a two-percent chance of winning that bet. She smiled as Adrien, with them at an outing for once, fell on his butt and Nino laughed as he helped him up. She even grinned as she watched Lila having a conversation with Nathaniel without being mean or mocking him once.
 She had thought a year before that Lila would never change, but she was wrong. And she was happy that she had been, because even though Lila wasn’t very nice, well, all her classmates were kind enough to make up for it.
 Yeah, Marinette thought with a smile, life was good. And she had a feeling that it would be even better.
(ESSAY) In Defence of Sleaze: On Baxter Dury’s Miami by Sarah Fletcher
Tumblr media
In this timely essay, Sarah Fletcher riffs on what sleaziness means, especially in the murky expanse of quarantine. Taking musician Baxter Dury as a case study and musing on themes of charm, permission, bodily consciousness and the everyday, Fletcher explores the weird and pleasurable contradictions of reclaiming the sleazy vibe.
> In the past weeks, I have felt hygienic but never clean. Everyday objects now carry hidden vectors of threat, and I’m conscious of how many unseen things are touching my skin. Wifi. Electricity. Radiowaves. Other people’s breath, maybe. 3G. 4G. Various smells. This is obviously ridiculous (and scientifically unsound), but this thought has also made me restless and caused me to feel I am marching into the future with the resistance of a body trudging through water. My mind’s been repeating and re-appropriating Frances Leviston’s poem ‘Incubus’, about sexual assault, as a mantra for the quarantine age: “A crime requires a perpetrator/To put in the dock, to accuse or defend,/To finish the plot, but there’s nobody here./…They’ve learned to walk through walls.”.
> Music has been one of the nicest things. It’s able to tune and untune time from slow to fast and back again. It’s also become an organising facet for my day: I play a song to get out of bed. I play a song while I take my state mandated walk with my dog. I listen to music while I cook. One morning, my calendar notified me of a concert I’d bought tickets for: March 25th, Baxter Dury, O2 Forum Kentish Town. I spent that night inside. Baxter Dury probably did too.
> Baxter Dury’s a singer and, to get it out of the way, the son of Ian Dury of Blockhead fame. His single ‘Miami’ first got my attention, with its synths that are so sweet they almost hurt your teeth, fumbling and hypnotic bass-line, and music video where pot-bellied Baxter is bathed in pink light and caresses one of the most beautiful woman you’ve ever seen, the type of caress that really makes you think about fingerprints. It’s ‘chorus’ is the cocky-ominous brag of ‘I’m Miami’. The song is one of the sleaziest things I’ve heard, which made me fall in love with it. I listened to his newly released album ‘The Night Chancers’, and it was exactly as I’d hoped: the sort of music that, like electricity and wifi, made its presence on my skin uncomfortably aware. The album makes me want to take a hot shower (in a good way). Sleazy.
> I’ll be honest here. I relate to the overt, bleeding-heart ridiculousness of sleaze. I have been a confidante of sleazesters and a lover of sleazesters; I have probably made myself so embarrassing and wonderful in equal measure as to have possibly been one of the few sleazy women existing in the world for a night or two. I should quickly emphasise here what fascinates me is a benign sleaziness. Of course, sleaziness can also be a veil by which men can be excused for behaviour that genuinely makes women uncomfortable or is even straight up harmful. All too familiar is the avuncular party-goer who is simply dismissed with: oh, that’s just [NAME]. We all know he’s a bit ‘like that’.
> The sleaziness I like — and that embodied in Baxter Dury’s music — is that which is unable to afford “the nice stuff” but will dish out for a downgraded parody of “the nice stuff”, no matter how ridiculous. Off brand liqueurs when beer would probably be nicer, and even cheaper. ‘Sleazy’ reminds me of the year I drank Martini Asti to feel fancy. Even worse, it was absolutely delicious. Anything that is “decadence on discount” has the scope to be sleazy. A lot of sleazy things were straightforwardly high-end until the masses got their hands on them, and they become tinged with dirtied sexual suggestion. Strawberries and cream. Satin sheets. Having a mirror as a wall. To be sleazy is to reclaim the spoiled hand-me-downs of the decadent shits who don’t even have the good sense to enjoy them properly in the first place. This is different than simply being cheap: sleaziness is the way that you enjoy things, and you carry that with you, no matter how much dough you have. Dutch still lives are windows into sleazy pasts with their strong cheeses, dead fish and ominous flies. It’s splashing out, and splashing over, always in a town near you.
> Sleazy is charming, but you wouldn’t want to take a photograph with it. In fact, you want to probably check there is absolutely no documentation that you met at all, despite the fact you laughed the hardest you have in years. It has a levity and swagger that seedy leaves at the door. It’s probably harder to be sleazy if you’re conventionally attractive. If you can wink, though, you’re already halfway there. Sleazy is always slipping between the slim margin of ‘tacky’ and ‘camp’. Camp is playful and aware of its artifice; to recognise camp when you see it is to be part of an inside joke. Tacky is embarrassing and unintentional, but tender in its earnestness. Tacky, at the end of the night, doesn't want to get so drunk it won’t be able to charm you to the hotel room. These humours muddy and melt in sleaze: bad puns. The pick-up line. Even a badly timed dad joke can fall victim.
> I asked twitter to name some sleazy things and got a gorgeous cornucopia of artefacts. Chest hair. Hot tub people. Overexposed photography. Cocaine. Hot tubs in private residences. Tia Maria. Dating younger women. Pomeranians. Miami.
> Purple is a sleazy colour. Even more so knowing it used to denote royalty. Libertarians are sleazy: so much shiny permissiveness with absolutely no sense.
> The joy of listening to Baxter Dury is, of course, that it can make a few minutes of my life sordid, and I can control when and how I return back to my current, hygienic-but-not-clean world. Sleazy is good for a night, a holiday, or a four minute song… but to start at sleaziness is to doom yourself. More than even evil, Oliver!’s Fagan’s sleaziness makes him laughable and ineffective. The sleazy man is already drunk by the time the women arrive at the bar. To end at sleaziness is to accept defeat into a pantomime, all normal routes of life exhausted. Sleaziness is uncomfortable to sit with for too long, because we worry it’s the stock cube from which all desires and overtures diffuse. If you could distill all your love, all your true sexual energy, your charisma into a single thing…  what if the real meat of it was a man with a gold chain buried in his chest air, extravagantly smoking Benson & Hedges and holding a heart-shaped box of chocolate?
> I recommend you listen to Baxter Dury’s ‘The Night Chancers’ with a glass of day-old red wine in silk pyjamas at an uncomfortably early time, like 5:30 PM.
Without further ado, here is the transcript for Episode One: Kitty Scott is Missing.
SFX: A cassette tape click. OPHELIA takes a deep breath, a second. When she speaks it is with a slight tremble.
OPHELIA
This is going to be difficult to say. When I first started using this recorder, I never thought I would be doing anything serious with it. Not like this, I mean. I always thought our investigations were serious and important, like it mattered that we were proving something’s existence. I mean, ghosts are real, but of course we knew that way before we put it on cassette. We agree that if Bigfoot does exist, and we aren’t saying that they do, they should just be left alone. Three-eyed deer who will draw you into the woods to great fortune or great peril… again, some of us remain unconvinced, but I myself am a believer.
I… The date is April 19th. My best friend, Kitty Scott, has been missing for almost 48 hours. And I have no idea where she is.
To say it’s unlike her would be a gross understatement, but I guess that’s what a lot of people say, right? When people go missing? “It seems so unlike them. I can’t imagine why. You think you know somebody.”
The thing is that I do know Kitty. I know her better than I know anybody in the world, even Isaac, even myself. Her brother James--who can go straight to you-know-where at his earliest possible convenience--he says that she skipped town. And that’s what everybody thinks, but it isn’t true. I’m sure of it. Kitty wanted to leave, but she wouldn’t. She’s still here. Somewhere.
So, who’s on my side? Isaac, for sure. He’s known Kitty for her whole life--well, everyone here has--but she’s basically lived here for the last two years. He not her best friend, but he is her best friend’s uncle and legal guardian, so close enough.
Sheriff Hayle will back me up, I bet. She’s something of a mystery herself, sure, but when it comes down to it she is smart as anything and hates James just about as much as I do. Not great for mayoral-police relations, but I don’t think anybody really cares that much. If I tell her what I know, she’ll believe me. Oh, maybe she’ll even let me work the case with her! Oh my god, Kitty will think it’s hilarious. “Detective Ophelia Joy, Amsterdam PD! Pew pew pew pew pew!” Yeah, I like it.
And then there’s the new kid. He’s already offered to help, which is great news. It’s kind of hard to get a read on him, but he seems honest enough. Pretty sharp. Nice and all.
Maybe I’m not giving him enough credit. We never get new folks in town, so I don’t really have a lot of room for comparison. Everyone I know is someone I’ve known for years. And someone who’s known Kitty for years, which will either be very good or very, very bad. She has a very unique… and… strong personality. That I love, obviously.
But I guess that’s the team. Isaac, Sheriff Hayle, the new kid, and me. Now I guess we do what detectives do; we look over what we know. We investigate what we don’t. We solve the case!
Let’s break it down.
SFX: A click as the tape ends.
After a moment:
KITTY
Bug, I love you, but that’s the dumbest shit I’ve ever heard in my life.
OPHELIA
Just think about it--
KITTY
Ghosts? Why not. Werewolves? Okay, fine. I’ll even take a stab at fairies if they aren’t the Tinkerbell kind. But what you’re spouting is bullshit, babe.
OPHELIA
What is so hard to believe about a three-eyed deer?
KITTY
(Dramatically) The three-eyed deer, eerie in its grace, its centerfold eye radiating gold. Beware its gaze, or it may steal thine soul! “Hear it not, Duncan, for it is a knell / That summons thee to heaven, or to hell.”
OPHELIA
...Well when you quote Macbeth you make it sound stupid.
KITTY
Shakespeare was right about a good many things.
OPHELIA
But this is real. I’ve been doing research at the library archives, and--
KITTY
You’ve been sneaking into the library archives when Mrs. Fumero isn’t looking.
OPHELIA
I’ve been sneaking into the library archives when Mrs. Fumero isn’t looking. And there have been multiple accounts of these deer. Not like, on the front page, but still. A lot of people say they felt compelled to follow them into the woods, where great danger surely awaited… or greatest fortune.
KITTY
You see? How does that not sound fake?
OPHELIA
Truth is stranger than fiction, dear.
KITTY
(Tsks) Listen to us, sounding like an old married couple. And you know what wives do for their wives? They tell them how the Scottish play ends.
OPHELIA
They tell them how the Scottish play ends?
KITTY
Oh, would you? You’re a doll.
OPHELIA
You can memorize it--not even one of the best lines--but you can’t bother reading all of it?
KITTY
Please don’t question my genius, Bug. And I know you didn’t read it either. You just watched some high school performance on YouTube!
OPHELIA
It was meant to be seen and not read anyway.
(She sighs)
Pretty much everyone dies because MacB isn’t fit to be king. Um, Lady MacB gets obsessive about washing her hands clean of blood and then dies. The witches give ole Mickey a prophecy that no man born of a woman can kill him, so Macduff kills him because his mother had a C-Section, so he wasn’t technically born, so he can kill Macbeth.
KITTY
Wow. That shit’s depressing.
OPHELIA
What do you think “the Tragedy of Macbeth” means? It’s on the front cover!
KITTY
Bold of you to assume I read what I don’t have to. As exciting and invigorating as this is, I better get going. It's, like, ugh, midnight, and that essay’s due first period. It’s not going to write itself! I would know, I’ve bet on that happening before.
That ending’s kind of stupid, anyway. Lady MacB could have killed him. She’s not a man of woman born, right? A little stab there, a little “I am no man!” Lord of the Rings, baby!
OPHELIA
Eowyn could take me out, honestly.
KITTY
Like a date, or with her sword?
OPHELIA
I’m impartial.
KITTY
I feel it. Hey, we’re gonna meet at the Igloo after school, right? You promised a birthday sundae, and if you fail to complete your end of the bargain, well… (Her voice drops) You may meet an unfortunate accident.
OPHELIA
(Laughs) I won’t let you down, boss.
SFX: Kitty leaves and walks down the stairs
Hey, what do I get out of this?
KITTY
(Distantly)You get to hang out with me! Love you, Bug!
SFX: The door slams behind her.
OPHELIA
Love you too.
SFX: A cassette tape clicks.
OPHELIA
I hate the phrase “the last time I saw her.” Let’s call it the most recent time instead. It seems more confident. It was the night before her birthday, the 17th. Well, April 17th, and she turned 18 on the 18th. Oh, this could get confusing. Okay, so let’s call April 18th the day of the incident, which is also her birthday. But, come to think of it, we don’t know whether whatever happened… happened on the day of the incident, the 18th. It could have happened very late on the 17th, when I saw her most recently.
Oh my god, this would be way clearer written down. Curse my dyslexia! Pens are way too slow, and the computer is even slower. Tape, you are the only constant in life. I owe it all to you, buddy.
In any case, we don’t know when the uh… the incident, uh, incited. I used to ask her to text me when she got home, but she always forgot, so I kind of gave up. I haven’t talked to James or Lizzie yet. Which is to say that they’ve tried their best not to talk to me. Sometimes I forget that Lizzie used to be my babysitter. She used to be so cool before she married that d-bag.
It’s like once they got married they started sharing all of his baggage. I’m an only child, so maybe I just don’t get it, but aren’t you supposed to love your siblings? Maybe that’s a lie fed to me by years of TV, but I thought the worst it was supposed to be was a few pranks, maybe a scuffle. I’ve never seen people with as bad of a relationship as Kitty and James. I don’t think he’s ever given a crap about her, and she knows it. It’s a wonder the whole town doesn’t know it, but he’s the golden child. He could probably kill someone and they’d forgive him for it.
(Pauses) He wouldn’t, would he?
Okay, maybe I need to get a little perspective before I accuse the mayor of murder. He probably didn’t do it, but I wouldn’t put it past him, morally speaking. Can you hire a hitman in Ohio? I don’t think so, but it might be worth looking in to.
(She clears her throat)
Back on the case. At first I didn’t realize that anything was wrong. We don’t have any classes together before lunch, but I didn’t see her at our usual table. I asked around, but Cassidy B said that she didn’t see her in geometry or English. I texted her during lunch, but she didn’t respond in time for the next class.
Now, when your friend doesn’t show up to school one day, typically your first thought is that she’s sick. Maybe she’s throw up, or she has a fever. Say it’s her birthday, which it was; Maybe she’s skipped class to play video games all day. It wouldn’t be out of character.
I, on the other hand, had the initial thought that she had been kidnapped. After she left that night, I admit that I watched a few… or a lot of true crime videos online. I can’t stop thinking about the case about this girl from the early 2000’s. She was a child genius, she played a ton of instruments, that kind of thing. Then one night, a man that once did construction on her family’s house broke in through her window and kidnapped her. It took them months to find her, and among the other unspeakable things that happened to her, she had been hidden in plain sight. Her kidnapper would dress her up in a disguise--you know: glasses, a wig, a veil--and called her his wife, and hardly anyone was the wiser.
The whole thing is pretty scary. No, it’s more than that. The idea that it could happen to you, or to anyone, even, it keeps you up at night. The idea that there’s just something right in front of you, and you just can’t see it.
Better keep my eyes open, I guess.
SFX: A click as the tape ends.
SFX: A voice mailbox tone.
SFX: Bird chirping.
KITTY
This is Kitty. Leave a message, or don’t. The choice is yours. Use it wisely.
SFX: A voice mailbox tone.
KITTY
This is Kitty. Leave a message--
SFX: A voice mailbox tone.
KITTY
This is Kitty--
SFX: Bells jingle as Ophelia walks into the Igloo. Birdsong fades.
EMPLOYEE
(Bored to death) Sorry man, cash only.
LIAM
Wait, for real?
EMPLOYEE
That’s what it says on the sign. We don’t even have a card reader.
LIAM
(Stumbling over his words) Okay. Then you can just--keep it, I guess.
OPHELIA
Hey, wait! I can cover it for you.
LIAM
Really?
OPHELIA
Yeah. It’s, what, a tornado with M&M’s? Those things are like, two dollars. It’s not a big deal.
LIAM
I can pay you back, I promise.
OPHELIA
Deal. And can I get two sundaes, the works?
EMPLOYEE
Sure thing, ‘Felia.
LIAM
Felia?
OPHELIA
Oh, it’s a nickname. The whole thing is Ophelia Florence Joy, which is exactly why I go by Fee.
LIAM
Yeah, that checks out. I’m Liam. Summers. Liam Ferdinand, if you want the whole thing.
OPHELIA
I must say, that’s a pretty good one.
LIAM
Thanks, I picked it out myself and everything.
OPHELIA
You’re not from around here, are you? Not to be weird, but I would remember seeing you. We don’t get a ton of fresh faces outside of summer fair season.
LIAM
I was hoping it wouldn’t be so obvious, but yeah, my parents and I just moved here. Yesterday, actually.
OPHELIA
I didn’t see any moving trucks. Um, where are you...
LIAM
Birch street. On the other side of downtown from here, I think.
EMPLOYEE
(In the background) Two sundaes, plus the tornado, that’s seven.
OPHELIA
Here. That’s a really nice area. You might be neighbors with my best friend. Have you met Kitty yet?
LIAM
You’re actually the first person I’ve really talked to here. We just got to town last night, and we had to switch banks when we moved here, right? So I don’t have an account at the new bank and I spent all my cash on road trip snacks. Hence, the credit card fiasco and my debt to you.
OPHELIA
(Sighs) I was kinda hoping you’d met her. She hasn’t been responding to me all day.
LIAM
Is she sundae number two?
OPHELIA
Yep. You know, this could really work out well for both of us. Want a ride home?
SFX: The recorder clicks on.
OPHELIA
Like I said, the new kid is pretty cool. He’s from New York--the city, not just the state--which automatically makes him the coolest person I know. Kitty would kick me for even daring to imply that it isn’t her, but she’s never even left this town, so that’s that. I mean, aunt Jen is from Jersey, but it’s not quite the same.
You technically aren’t supposed to be on the phone while you’re driving, but I figured I would make an exception while I drove the new kid home to call James’ office to see what was what. His assistant, Janet, definitely knows that he has something out for me. She didn’t even bother giving me some dumb excuse, like “he was in a meeting.” She just put me on hold for the whole ten minute drive to Birch Street. Birch… you know, there’s a scathing rhyming joke I could make, but hey, high road.
As I guessed, Liam now lives right next door to the Scott residence. I say right next door as if there isn’t three acres between every house on that road. It isn’t a very neighborly area, but then again, neither is my house, so I have no room to talk.
Macey answered Kitty’s door. She’s about six or seven now, and she’s already really smart. Kitty loves those kids, Macey and Junior. Which is why, when Lizzie came to the door and told me that Kitty hadn’t come home that night, I got out of there pretty quickly. I think kids understand more than we give them credit for.
SFX: Recorder clicks off.
SFX: The sounds of light traffic.
SFX: A door slams, followed by...
SFX: the sound of running as Ophelia approaches the police station.
OPHELIA
Sheriff Hayle! Sheriff Hayle!
SFX: She trips over gravel.
Sh--I’m fine! I’m fine.
HAYLE
Jesus, kid. Almost made me drop my tea. What’s got you screaming?
OPHELIA
I--She, Kitty, she--
ISAAC
Fee, what’s wrong?
OPHELIA
She--Uncle Isaac, what are you doing here?
ISAAC
I got off early. I’m having tea with a friend. Ophelia, what’s going on?
OPHELIA
Kitty didn’t make it home last night. Sheriff Hayle, she was over at my house until maybe midnight, and then she left, and then I didn’t hear from her, and her sundae melted, so I went to her house and Lizzie said she didn’t come back, and I-- You know, not to jump to conclusions but--
HAYLE
Let’s take a deep breath, okay? You’re not just jumping, you’re headed for the trampoline. You sure she’s not just at a friend’s house?
OPHELIA
Sheriff, you know Kitty and I aren’t the kind of people to have two whole friends. We refer to those as “backup buds.”
HAYLE
Have you talked to James?
OPHELIA
I tried. It went about as well as you wouldd expect.
HAYLE
I’ll probably have better luck. You said you saw her last night?
OPHELIA
Yeah. Hey, here's an idea; I’ll head along Mulberry, see if I can spot any clues, maybe talk to some neighbors? I bet Angela Bryant saw her drive by, that woman is always up late--
HAYLE
I don’t think so. Isaac’s gonna drive you home, and you’re gonna stay there. You’ve had enough excitement for today, I think.
OPHELIA
Um, sorry? I’m not going to sit down while Kitty’s god-knows-where! What if she’s hurt, or, or scared?
HAYLE
Young lady, are you doubting my ability to do my job?
OPHELIA
(Quietly) I mean, a little.
HAYLE
Ophelia, I’ve known you for a long time, and I like to think I know you pretty well, you and Kitty both. And if there’s one thing I know, it’s that you’re going to try to take this into your own hands. How many times have I caught you hopping my back fence?
OPHELIA
Only, like, three times. Four, tops.
HAYLE
This isn’t the case of the missing garden rake, you hear me? We don’t know quite what this is yet, but if it’s serious business I can’t get a civilian tangled up in it all. Not only for your sake. I need you to think of Kitty. If you start poking your nose where it doesn’t belong, I don’t know what could happen.
OPHELIA
Sounds like a threat.
HAYLE
Jesus, Joy. You know I didn’t mean it like that!
ISAAC
Come on, both of you. Nothing’s getting done just standing here.
OPHELIA
Fine. But you’ll let me know if you find anything, right?
HAYLE
Sure, kid. Sure.
SFX: Ophelia and Isaac walk across gravel.
SFX: Car doors open and shut.
SFX: Street noises fade.
SFX: The engine starts.
ISAAC
How about we go home? I think there’s some pizza in the fridge.
OPHELIA
Okay.
ISAAC
(The most awkward man alive) Just watch, Ophelia. Things are… They’re gonna be okay.
SFX: Recorder clicks on.
OPHELIA
As you can probably guess, I didn’t get a lot of sleep that night. Maybe three hours, tops. I didn’t hear from Sheriff Hayle that afternoon, but later that night Isaac told me that James had no idea where she was, either. They didn’t find her car, cell phone. Nothing. It’s like she was whisked away. Not in Kansas anymore. Now there’s just… hoping and waiting.
Wow, I couldn’t even convince myself for five seconds, huh? I know the sheriff has good intentions, but she’s got to be the dumbest person alive if she thinks I’m going to sit back like a good little girl while she does all the work. I’ve got a good brain and a car and a tape recorder. I know Amsterdam like I know my own brain, and I know Kitty even better. I’ve got, you know, goodness and the power of love on my side. That’s all it takes, right?
Let’s get ‘er done.
SFX: Recorders click off.
SFX: The light chatterings of a crowd.
HAYLE
I’d like to thank everyone who came out to this preliminary search. As you know, Kitty Scott has been declared missing as of yesterday, presumably since very early that morning. Now, Kitty is no longer a minor, so no Amber alert has been issued, but her safe recovery is still an APD priority.
We will now be breaking into small groups of two or three to comb the area between the Scott residence on Birch Street and Foxhole Road. We’ve passed out maps with individual areas highlighted. Those will be your search areas. The whole thing should be about five square miles. If you find anything suspicious, please let the police department know as soon as possible, and an officer will be dispatched. Sound good?
SFX: Murmurs of agreement from the crowd.
LIAM
Hey, Ophelia! Uh, Fee!
OPHELIA
Liam? Hey.
LIAM
Do you have a search partner yet?
OPHELIA
Well, I was with my uncle, but I think he’s gone off somewhere. You can be with me, if you want.
LIAM
Great, thanks.
SFX: They start walking.
SFX: The sound of the crowd disappears.
I just wanted you to know that I’m sorry. About this whole thing. I know you’re best friends and all.
OPHELIA
Yeah, we’re pretty iconic. Dynamic duo, kind of thing. Sundae number two.
LIAM
It really sucks, then. That she would just leave like that.
OPHELIA
So that is what people are saying. That she’s a runaway.
LIAM
I mean, yeah. Just from what I’ve heard, it doesn’t seem like she had a lot of Amsterdam spirit.
OPHELIA
That much is true. She doesn’t.
LIAM
But you don’t think she ran?
OPHELIA
Even better. I know she didn’t.
LIAM
Then what happened to her? Maybe it’s just me, but if it were my best friend, I would rather she have run away than anything else. Better out there and free than here and hurt, you know?
But I’m sure she’s fine!
OPHELIA
I know that Kitty wouldn’t leave voluntarily because I’m still here. She wouldn’t run away. Not without me. Kitty is in Amsterdam, and I’m going to find her. Just watch.
SFX: Outro music.
The 100 rewatch: 1x01 Pilot
I’m a new fan of The 100, who first binged it last year, August to November. This is my first full rewatch of the show. I was planning to start it anyway and finish it before the season 6 premiere on April 30, and when I saw that Fox Serbia was airing a rerun (Monday to Friday, 40 min. after midnight, with repeats the next day), starting on 1st February, it was a great opportunity to start my rewatch in HDTV on my beautiful new TV. I decided to do write-ups and tag other fans on SpoilerTV website, as I did when I was first watching the show. But my posts turned into full blown essays. So, finally, after over a week, I’ve realized: Why don’t I post them on my Tumblr blog, too? I’ll copy my write-ups of the first 7 episodes, and then I’ll post my rewatch posts after I watch each episode. (The next one, 1x08, is on Monday’Tuesday.)
Spoilers below for all 5 seasons of the show. I go of on a tangents and make a lot of references to future events.
Rating: I'd give the Pilot 4/10, maybe 4.5/10 if I'm generous.
Episode opens on Clarke's voiceover. The first mention of how Ark came to be. There were "12 nations" with stations in the beginning, 97 years earlier, and the current Ark is "one station forged from the many". Which begs some questions: how did they manage to make everyone on the Ark speak English (and in American accents), why are they so culturally uniform? Did they try to do it by force? And why did big powers like China and Russia go along with it? But world-building has never been this show's strength. The opening scene shows Clarke drawing, and focuses on her father's watch. Some facts I had forgotten - the cells on the Ark were called "Skybox". Clarke says she is turning 18 in a month. This means she turned 18 sometime in late season 1 and was about 18 and a half year old in season 4. In season 5, she should be about 24 and a half year old. Abby is the first other major character to appear. Abby to Clarke "Your instincts will tell you to take care of everyone else first, like your father", stressing that this is the similarity between Clarke and Jake. "I can't lose you, too, I love you so much" First appearance of Jaha - on the video played to the Delinquents on the dropship. The kids comment: "your dad's a dick, Wells". Yes, he is. "If we knew for sure the Earth was survivable, we would send others. You are being sent down because your crimes have made you expendable". Oh god, he's awful. He became a more enjoyable character in season 4, just because of his interactions with other characters, but he's always been an a-hole. Jaha tells the kids to go to Mount Weather, explains what it is and that it has supplies for about 300 people to survive for 2 years. I had completely forgotten that there were so many Mount Weather references. This was clearly a storyline that was planned from the beginning. The first casualties on the show - 2 Delinquents who imitated Finn's stupid behavior on the dropship, but, unlike him, were killed when the ship crash-landed. When they land, it turns out they landed on a wrong mountain, instead of Mount Weather, due to a technical error. Who knew that this was the luckiest thing that ever happened to them? Clarke and Wells later insist that the kids should go to MW ASAP and find supplies. Every time someone in the episode talks about Mount Weather and says things like "We have to find Mount Weather to survive", it's so ironic now. No, you need to run as far from Mount Weather as possible. Run, run, fast, and don't turn back. At the end of the episode, they try to cross the river, and Jasper even finds a Mount Weather sign. In retrospect, they are so lucky they did not go through with it, after Jasper got speared, but who was to know? Kane looks so young compared to his season 5 self. And it's funny to see early Kane, who was kind of a bad guy. He's so pessimistic and insisting on ruthless solutions as necessary, a total opposite of where his views end up later. But the one consistent trait is that he's always been so stubborn about sticking to whatever course of action he thinks is best, and even naive about it. At this point, he's all about sticking to the rules. And here's Shumway, who seems to want the culling to happen even more than Kane does. I never understood what the supposed difference in policy was between Diana and Jaha. Diana was claiming to be fighting for the rights of the underprivileged? But Shumway is working for her, and wants the culling to happen, Jaha and Kane are intending for the culling to happen... What's the difference? They're all the same. Shumway is also the one to tell Kane about Bellamy's shooting of Jaha - and Kane says they have a traitor. Shumway close-up, he says nothing. Foreshadowing. Scene between Kane and Abby near the end of the episode. Kane says he's the only one willing to do what needs to be done so they survive. Abby: "That's the difference between us, Kane. I choose to make sure we deserve to stay alive." Ironic how they'll end up switching positions during the Dark Year. But then Abby starts hating herself over what she has become. The thing I liked best about the Pilot the first time was that it was really good at explaining the premise and getting a lot of info across, without clunky exposition. Oh god, about half of the Pilot was sooo cheesy. Most of the scenes with kids on Earth are so teen-soapy. That's why I initially preferred the stuff on the Ark (but then a few episodes later, I felt the exact opposite). Especially 90% of Octavia's lines in the Pilot are so cringey,I remember I only found it to be 'just OK' at the time I first watched it, good enough to keep watching, but I only got hooked around 1x05 when it started losing most of its CWness. But now, after having seen the rest of the show, the tone is so weird - so teen-soapy. I guess the first time, I expected the show to be like that, because of the channel it's on - a teen-soap take on post-apocalyptic SciFi. The pop songs and the scenes with kids enjoying the Earth were so corny but I guess they were meant to be, to make the contrast bigger when something bad suddenly happens, like Jasper getting speared at the end of the episode. Or that mutant deer, that was a good scene. Funny that we never get to see any of the scary nature stuff again. What happened to the man-eating water snake? The show pretty much forgets all of that later, because we get human antagonists on Earth. I also probably blanked out a lot of the cheesy teen-soapy stuff the first time, because I wasn't interested, since I didn't even remember some of it. All the potential pairings and flirtations that went nowhere now seem so random and funny. They were clearly just throwing anything to the wall to see what sticks. Who remembers that Octavia used to have a thing for Finn in the Pilot and said "Finn is mine" to Clarke, and he briefly flirted with her? Then there was Jasper's crush on Octavia, but that one actually did last a bit longer in season 1. The show really seemed to be trying to make Finn the main heartthrob. Of course, Finn's main interest was flirting with Clarke non-stop and following her around all the time. The fact he started hitting on her immediately in the dropship really makes him look bad now (whether or not that was initially intended - since they probably still hadn't planned for Raven's character to exist.)
And look, here's Kelly Hu as Kane's girlfriend/Abby's best friend, who was clearly supposed to be one of the mains, and then completely disappeared without explanation after the Pilot. Kelly Hu was even in the main credits for the Pilot, right after Bob Morley, who was credited 6th - after Eliza and Paige and Thomas McDonnel and Eli Goree and after Marie. Which pretty much fits their screentime in the Plot. I doubt they were expecting Bellamy to become the male lead, Finn and Wells were clearly treated as the male leads. Speaking of Bellamy - AARGH, that terrible slicked-back hair! My eyes, my eyes!!! I remember now why I had such mixed feelings about him in the Pilot, unlike others who said they hated him. I mean, he was clearly meant to be seen as an antagonist at this point, but most of the things he says about the privileged and the elite on the Ark is true. I still think that the Ark leaders were the first villains introduced on the show. They sucked. Even if we weren't supposed to see them as villains, and even if some of them later changed and developed (Kane). I wasn't sure how much of what Bellamy said was just him using that rhetoric to manipulate the kids. but the first time he says "let the privileged do something for a change", he said it before he learned about the wristbands. So, some of that anger was sincere. (And it was certainly justified.) A bit later we see Bellamy listening carefully and formulating a plan as Clarke is explaining to the kids that the wristbands are transmitting their life signs to the Ark.
I don't know where the later idea of Bellamy as a completely hotheaded guy who can't act in a strategic or manipulative comes from. One of the first things we saw him do in the show was manipulate a bunch of younger people into something that would help him not get caught and executed by the Ark leaders, so he could stay and protect his sister. That's what he's doing for the fist few episodes. The first kids he convinces to take the wristbands off and make others do the same are Murphy and John Mbege. It's funny that Mbege's role was at this point almost as big as Murphy's. We still haven't seen Harper or Miller.
So many scenes of conflict between Bellamy and Wells in this episode. It seems like they probably meant for that dynamic to be an important one going forward, with the two of them as foils. "See you on the other side". Oh, god. Those lines will never be the same. It's actually Finn who said it first when he was about to cross the river by rope, but then Jasper went first to impress Octavia, and said that line for the first time. And here comes the spear. "We are not alone". Well, duh. But Clarke had to say that line for a very Lost-like ending to the Pilot. Geez, I can see how this bunch of clueless, silly kids with no weapons, fooling around, looked like such a dangerous invading force to the Grounders who saw them. Yes, the season 5 comparison between them and the heavily armed mass murderers from Eligius who immediately tried to kill the first people they ran across, was soooo apt... *sigh*.
last song i listened to:
the space traveller’s lullaby | kamasi washington - i’m trying to get through his second album rn (i left off on the second disk yesterday) and while everything he makes is undeniably amazing, it’s? a three hour album? i don’t have the attention span for his spiritual jazz, as great as it is
Malcolm Bright knew something was off about her the moment Gil introduced her.
He had watched Gil show her around, her platinum hair cascading in gentle waves, falling to her mid-back. She was Asian, clearly, and she wore a leather jacket, a red shirt and skinny jeans. Her combat boots fell heavy to the ground. She smiled politely, and didn't seem to talk much. He saw her occasionally nod, her eyes following everything that Gil gestured to.
He watched her intently and came to the conclusion that her and Dani would get along well.
As if on cue, the woman in question opened the glass door seperating them, and joined him at his side.
"Kaitlyn Sun-Mae" Dani said, noticing his eyes on her.
"Shes a new detective. Gil wouldn't tell me anything other then that she was 'over qualified' for the job."
Malcolm glanced at her.
"So we should expect a lot then." He says, returning his stare to the new woman.
Dani nodded and sat on a desk behind him, watching as Gil brought the woman, Kaitlyn, towards them. Malcolm opened the door and smiled warmly, nodding at her.
Gil had clapped him on the back and gestured to the woman as she walked in from behind him
"Malcolm, this is Kat. Kat, Malcolm."
Kat, he thought, was much better then Kaitlyn.
"Nice to see a new face around here. The others were getting kind of boring." He heard Dani scoff after he said it, but when she got up to shake the womans hand, she shoulder-checked him, smiling playfully. Kat took her hand gently, but shook it firmly.
"I'm Dani. Ignore pretty much every word that comes out of his mouth."
Kat let's out a breathy laugh at that, but doesn't react any further.
"Its nice to meet you all. I'm the new detective."
Her voice was lower then he expected, but also a tiny bit more nasally, a weird combination, but not unpleasant.
"I work mainly with sex-crimes, but I dip my toes into a little bit of everything." She put her hair behind her hair. It looked soft, despite the harsh bleaching process her hair had to have gone through, Malcolm noted.
"We can always use more people in that division. I'm a profiler, I primarily work to catch serial killers."
She blinks hard at that, he notices.
"I could say the same about yours." She smiles warmly at him, but he catches how her eyes linger a bit on his face. Her eyes are gray, dark gray, with a bit of dark blue as well. She has long eyelashes too.
She turned away first.
JT walked in and introduced himself to her as well, and he watched as she laughed at something he said.
He couldn't figure out what it was though. His preoccupied with trying to figure out what was so off about her. She seemed well enough, but she also had a certain air around her. Tense and secretive, he was sure she was hiding something. He wasn't one to question Gils judgement, however, it had never failed him before, but still, he couldn't shake the feeling that something was different.
"Okay. Greetings are out of the way, let me show you to your desk." Gil gestured for Kat to follow him, and she nodded and gave a small wave.
He turned to Dani.
"So what do you think?"
"Of what? Kat?"
"Yes. Obviously."
Dani rolled her eyes.
"I think shes fine, nothing to be weary of, at least." She looks down at him, knowing he's about to refute her.
After a few seconds of silence, she starts to doubt whether or not he actually will.
"Shes hiding something."
There we go.
"Yeah? And so are you. So am I. We all are. I noticed it too. I think it will be okay." She wants to shut him down before he can even start to spiral.
"Gil wouldn't hire her otherwise."
He nods at that. She was right, he supposed.
Malcolm watched as Gil showed her her station, and pointed to different things. Probably giving her the WiFi password and telling her the right way to use her computer. He could tell by looking at the way she nodded that she already knew how, and that she was just humoring him. He watched as Gil gave her a thumbs up and walked back to his desk, closing the door behind him.
He could get up and go talk to him about his suspicions, and risk getting lectured. Or he could go directly to her, and risk giving her the wrong impression. He contemplates his options. He did feel a slight obligation to say something about it, but somehow he was able to reason with himself and simply sit down, thinking of everything he knew about her so far.
Bleached hair. Asian. Tense. Polite. Quiet. Skinny.
He looks over at her.
Really skinny, actually. Dark gray-blue eyes.
The more he looked at her, the more confused he got. Nothing really seemed out of the ordinary, so why did he feel like things were?
He pushed his chair back and stood up, noting how she jumped at the sound of metal against linoleum. He watches as Dani says something to her, causing her to let out a laugh. He watches as they both fall into an easy conversation.
So he was right, then.
He walks over to Gils office, but before his hand touched the handle, the man himself yanked open the door.
"Body on 35th. Female." He walks in Dani's direction, opening up the glass door.
"Dani?"
Dani stands up, wiping her hands on her thighs.
"On it."
Gil looked at Kat, and as if she felt his stare, she looked up at him.
He gestured for her to come over, and she did almost immediately.
She walked over with a grace Malcolm didn't expect.
"Yes?" The woman responded, voice soft.
Gil looked at her.
"I know its your first day, but somebody called in a murder. You down?"
Kat, without skipping a beat, nodded.
"Of course. Its my job, isn't it?"
"Well you aren't obligated, it is your first day."
"Well if not today, when? There's a first for everything."
That, Malcolm thought, was true. Gil nodded, on the same page as him.
And then a voice played through Gils HT, panicked and shaking.
"Sir, we've gotten word of a man running past the scene, carrying what looks to be a camera."
Gil stared for a second, contemplating.
"Is there anything else you know about him?"
"Hes wearing a black hoodie, and uh- wait there he is agai- wait he's walking towards u- he's- sir this is a crime scene." The person on the line then went on to ask the man to leave, saying things along the lines of "put the camera down" and "stop taking pictures."
Then there was a gun shot.
Kat reacted first, she jumped up and horror crossed her face. Her brows furrowed, and she looked up at Gil, waiting for direction. A second of silence passed.
"Move out!" He yelled, and Dani ran out, Kat and Malcolm not far behind. JT started running too, catching up to Dani. They got into a car together, and before either of them could have gotten their seat belts on, Dani gassed it, hard.
Kat got into a car, and Malcolm got in the passenger side. She floored it almost immediately, before the door was even closed.
"Malcolm was your name, right?"
Malcolm nodded.
"Yep. The profiler."
She nods, locking it in her head, turning on the sirens. She follows Dani and in approximately three minutes, they arrive.
An ambulance can be seen, a person being led onto it in a stretcher. The officer, presumably. Kat gets out, and while everyone has hands on their guns, she doesn't even touch hers.
Its confusing, he thinks.
They walk into an apartment, the space between them heavy with silence. When they open the door Dani looks at them
"Her name is Colette Britchman. 23. She worked for a local strip club."
The body of a woman can be seen, eyes open, her head shaved, and fully nude. A sheet had been placed on her private areas, but otherwise, everything was visible.
Kat stared, putting on gloves and stalking forward. She kneeled down and looked at the dead womans milky eyes. She had scars all over her body, as well as fresh cuts. She carefully lifted up the sheet covering the womans breasts and gasps.
By this time, Malcolm had joined her, and saw the source of her gasp just as she did. He sucked in a breath, and had to look away.
There, carved gorily into both of the womans breasts, was the word "mine."
Kat squeezed her eyes shut before covering her back up. Malcolm examined her body, and the more he stared, the more strategic the cuts on her body seemed.
Kat had left, however. She went to the kitchen and looked at the fridge, and a piece of paper hanging on a magnet could be seen.
Next shoot- 3756 Pierre Ave.
"Dani?" The man called. The woman looked up at him.
"On it."
With that, she pulled out a computer and started typing away.
"Its about 7 miles away from here. Just a regular house."
She tells Gil about her discovery.
"I would imagine he went back there, or in the very least there's more evidence." Malcolm says, giving Kat a nod.
Kats eyes widen for an infinitesimal second. Gil offers a hand. She takes it and squeezes his two fingers until her a knuckles turn white, before letting go. Malcolm guesses that he's the only one who noticed. Gil looks at all of them.
"We should wait, find more info on our vic."
JT says something, but Malcolm doesn't listen, instead he looks to Kat, who's entire form is shaking.
"We don't know whats there. We need to be more prepared."
A twitch of her fingers. Her eyes dart to the left, right, and left again. Unnatural given the current situation. She looks up, and confusion crosses her face for half a millisecond, but he doesn't miss it.
"I say we go out. Try and find him." Its strange, he thinks, how her voice is just a tiny touch lower. Anyone else wouldn't notice it.
But he's Malcolm Bright, and he notices everything.
Hey yall. I saw an Anthony Padilla video a while ago about people dissociative identity disorder, and I immediately threw myself into research. I watched various youtubers with the disorder and read many essays on it, and i quickly learned how stigmatized this disorder was and made it a goal of mine to educate the people around me, because all information people get are from unrealistic movies and TV shows.
For example, the term "multiple personality disorder" is 35 years outdated. It's actually called dissociative identity disorder.
I also really like Prodigal Son and the shows take on different mental health disorders, and I often found myself wondering how Malcolm Bright would react to a person with DID, so I decided to write about it. I plan on this story being at least 20 chapters, if not more.
DID is going to be portrayed realistically and accurately, hope you enjoy!!!
I hope everyone had an informative and reflective Black History Month! This month for the Own Voices Global Reading Challenge we read for Black America (#ownvoices selections from Black American authors). Here’s what I read, listened to, and who I followed this month!
What I Read
Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston: My favorite of the month! This book has been on my TBR for ages, and I finally sat down to it and read it all in one sitting. Following the life of Janie from her idyllic but illusionary childhood, through her marriages, through her adventures and travels, Their Eyes radiates with beauty, love, and self-discovery. The story was so vibrant and moving, so complex and philosophical. I loved Janie and her story; she’s probably one of the most interesting and complex characters I’ve ever read. I was thinking about her and her story long after I closed the book.
An American Marriage by Tayari Jones: Another that’s been on my TBR for ever. I was working at the library when this book exploded in popularity — it was almost never on the shelf. With Jones being a local author, I was excited to read her Atlanta and this book did not disappoint. Moving between the lives of a married couple, Roy Jr. and Celestial, the novel navigates the complicated terrain of love while the characters navigate the even more complicated terrain of a wrongful conviction and imprisonment. I was riveted to the last chapter, unsure how it was going to turn out well for anyone with only a few pages left. A moving portrait of love, loss, and the effects of the criminal justice system on Black lives, this novel is an instant classic.
Citizen: An American Lyric by Claudia Rankine: I had the honor of meeting Claudia Rankine while I was in college. She was a guest at Agnes Scott College’s Annual Writers’ Festival in 2017 while I was interning with the program. I was amazed by her wisdom and quiet grace, and I thoroughly enjoyed her reading though I had never read her work. When I devised this challenge, she was immediately at the forefront of my list for this month. Citizen is a moving collection of experiences, reflections, and essays in which Rankine lays bare the Black experience. There was so much I learned not only about the physical and casual experiences that Black women face, but also about historical events of racism and violence that I had never heard about before.
For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow is Enuf by Ntozake Shange: I found this book from a bingo card for Black history month by @diverseclassics on Instagram (see below!). I had heard about this book here and there, but I didn’t really know what to expect from it. It was unlike anything that I’ve ever read. Written and performed on stage originally in the 1970s, For Colored Girls is a moving and flowing collection of Black women’s experiences. It can be hard to read. I will admit that the form of this book really inhibited the experience of it for me. I have no experience in theater, I don’t read plays, and I only read poetry when forced. I’d love to watch this book performed, as it was intended.
Just Mercy by Brian Stevenson: Another that’s been on my TBR for a while! This book came to my attention more seriously when the film was released, but I had watched it dance around on Bookstagram for a while. I found a copy at my library book sale recently, so I had it up farther on the list. I knew it would be good, but I had no idea how moving, how emotional, and how mindset changing it would be for me. The book follows the experience of the now-famed civil rights lawyer Brian Stevenson as he became involved with Death Row cases and began his organization the Equal Justice Initiative. The stories Stevenson told about the people he met on Death Row, the injustices they faced, the outright racism that warped their lives was truly harrowing. I cried a lot reading this book. It truly changed how I think about the world and the experiences of others in it.
What I Listened To
Ella Fitzgerald (with Louie Armstrong): a classic! I love nothing more than dancing around the kitchen cooking dinner while Ella and Louie sing their jazz.
H.E.R.: I’ve been a fan of H.E.R.’s award show performances for years. Her style and skill and attitude and persona on stage is electric and empowering. I’ve just gotten around to listening to her music more casually and I’ve really enjoyed the experience!
Bobby Hebb: I found the song “Sunny” on instagram’s music feature while I was looking for a happy song to put with a video of one of my cats rolling in the sun. The rain and cold and whisper of spring this month has me listening to this song literally once a day.
The Birth of Rhythm and Blues (Spotify playlist): I love this Spotify playlist! So much good music!
Women of Motown (Spotify playlist): Another classic. Gladys Knight and Diana Ross — need I say more?
Who I Followed
@booksbythecup: This Bookstagram is so dreamy! Creator La’Shell posts photos daily of Black-authored books with cups of tea. She’s been working through the alphabet this month, posting a photo each day with a theme.
@nedratawwab: Nedra Glover Tawwab is a therapist and writer who posts amazing graphics about mental health, healthy relationships, and living to your truth. This is a great entry way into therapy for someone considering it, and a great resource for those who can’t invest fully in therapy at the time.
@rachel.cargle: Rachel Elizabeth Cargle is a writer, academic, and lecturer. For the month of February, in honor of Black History Month, she posts prompts for folks to research Black History for themselves. I love this idea! It’s an amazing way to bring attention to topics in Black history that aren’t well known and to practice your researching skills.
@diverseclassics: A staple of Bookstagram! This account is dedicated to highlighting marginalized voices in the literary world as well as redefining what the “classic canon” is. I’ve discovered so many new authors and books through this account. They also shared this amazing bingo-card style list for Black classics which was very helpful in building my TBR!
Tumblr media
Further Reading
Here are some topics in Black America that need to be talked about. Obviously, this short list doesn’t begin to cover the traumas and injustices and realities that Black Americans face each day living in this country, but it is a good place to start to bring awareness to targeted and vulnerable people in this community. DISCLAIMER: Many of these issues deal with violence against Black people. Read the links at your discretion.
Violence against Transwomen of Color: MTV has recently launched a new show in their primetime slot on Wednesdays called MTV True Crime in which Dometi Pongo, the host, investigates crimes against young people, largely people of color. The show is hard to watch at times, but it brings a lot of light to issues that the modern American teenager faces, especially when they are from marginalized groups. One episode covers the murder of Kedarie Johnson, a gender-fluid teen in Iowa in 2016. The episode largely focuses on Kedarie’s murder, but also highlights a major issue in the Black Community today — violence against transwomen and gender non-conforming people. Often, the woman or person’s race and gender identity puts them at greater risk for violence, and their murders are not being solved, reported on, or brought to public attention.
Books in Prison: Reading Just Mercy by Brian Stevenson already had the prison system on my mind, and then articles began to come to my attention that discussed the censorship and banning of books in prison, which appear to be largely racially motivated. Toni Morrison, James Baldwin, and history books about racism in America are among those on banned lists across the country. Obviously, being such a huge proponent myself of freedom to read, this was a big issue for me. People in the prison system not only still have the right to read and pursue learning and education and art, but they have the right to access stories that resonate with them and reflect their experience and identity. The Equal Justice Initiative has fought the courts in many cases and has gotten bans lifted on what books prisoners are allowed to receive in prison, but most states still have racially biased banned lists. If you are interested in donating books to prisons, check this link for a list of organizations you can support. Violence against Black children in schools: The Black body is safe almost no where in America. In schools, headlines recently have been bombarded with news about children of color, especially Black children, facing extreme and unbelievable violence in schools. Increasingly, this violence comes at the hands of police. All ages are risk: 6-year-olds, 11-year-olds, teenagers. Black youth are more likely to be arrested at school than any other group. This report from an activist group called We Came to Learn reports on the history of violence against Black children in schools, highlighting that our current situation stems from segregationist beliefs and practices. The violence is not only physical: ‘spirit-murdering‘ of youth of color takes place when school systems, teachers, and administrators denigrate the identity and experience of their students in a racially discriminatory way.  This action kit by We Came to Learn can provide you with resources and support for fighting racial discrimination against children in your schools.
  I hope you enjoyed this month’s reading as much as I did. I got around to books that had been on my list forever, discovered new favorites, and learned more about the experience of my Black siblings in America. There is so much work to be done. Let’s get going!
  Black America: Wrap-up! I hope everyone had an informative and reflective Black History Month! This month for the Own Voices Global Reading Challenge we read for Black America (#ownvoices selections from Black American authors).
