ESL class will really show you how ridiculous our language is to try and learn. Like yeah, why DO we say "take a bath" when it's autonomous and "give a bath" when it's about taking care of a baby or a pet. We don't say "give myself a bath" unless it's a real and usually vaguely ironic emphasis on self care. It's not the natural flow of the words, but nor do we use the verb "bathe" in everyday speech.

#The teacher partners me with her problem students #And those problem students are very smart they just want to focus more on natural sounding language #They don't want to answer 'yes I did' and 'no I didn't'#They want to answer 'no I did this other thing instead' or 'yes I did it before coming to class'#The problem is (for one of them) that he keeps speaking up with suggestions of more expansive ways to respond #But because he hasn't actually learned them yet he ends up derailing #And he likes attention so he doesn't get too apologetic about it #It's better that I sit with him and do the work with him because I'll have time the teacher doesn't to explain some of those things #He drives the teacher crazy precisely because the inability to do individual work is her least favorite part of doing a class #I can relate #I'm much better one on one #adventures in tefl
