Hunted By The Sky by Tanaz Bhathena - Review

7/10⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Before anything, take a moment to scroll back up and look at that beautiful cover 😍 I don’t normally buy books based on the cover, but seeing my culture represented in such a gorgeous way made this an insta-buy for me (not to mention it was already in my TBR).

I guess I could call this an “own voices” review, but let’s keep in mind that Indian culture is very diverse and changes depending on region, so my interpretation is not going to speak for anyone but myself.

The author was actually inspired to write this book by two time periods in Indian history - Vedic India and medieval India. There’s a cool combination of court drama and desi royalty versus magical powers and distant gods. Bhathena also included elements of her Persian culture as well!

Imagine fantasy meets Indian royalty/mythology in a mystical world after a war and a 16 year old has to overthrow a tyrant. (Also enemies to lovers, badass women, ✨culture✨ etc).

On to the review ☀️

The Summary:

“Gul has spent her life running. She has a star-shaped birthmark on her arm, and in the kingdom of Ambar, girls with such birthmarks have been disappearing for years. Gul's mark is what caused her parents' murder at the hand of King Lohar's ruthless soldiers and forced her into hiding to protect her own life. So when a group of rebel women called the Sisters of the Golden Lotus rescue her, take her in, and train her in warrior magic, Gul wants only one thing: revenge.

Cavas lives in the tenements, and he's just about ready to sign his life over to the king's army. His father is terminally ill, and Cavas will do anything to save him. TL;DR 16 year old Gul witnesses her parents’ murder by royal troops under order from a king terrified of a prophecy that spells his end, and she’s set on a path to revenge. Cavas is trying to save his father from a chronic illness and lives in the lower class of society just trying to survive, but when he meets Gul sparks fly and adventure ensues.

(It’s 1:30 am right now so please bear with me 😭)

Ok so on representation:

This is embarrassing - like really embarrassing especially considering I read the summary - that when I first started because of the switching perspectives I thought that Cavas was Gul for the first two chapters and that the main character was into women 😭 alas, this was not the case.

While the main couple is not confirmed to be LGBTQ+, much of the lore is. The story of the sun and the moon being lovers is so adorable and told in such a beautiful, simple way. There are queer background characters, and it’s not introduced in a weird way, it’s just a natural part of the world they live in (which was so great).

As someone who reads fantasy for escapism, reading this and knowing there was no racism or homophobia was a big plus for me ✅

Also Gul is dark skinned (from a fictional world but presumably Indian) with curly dark hair. I loved this because Indians with natural curly dark hair are not often represented in media, so this was great!!

I had trouble picturing what Cavas looks like, but I remember he’s also desi and has dark brown eyes and black hair. I didn’t know what “aquiline” meant before reading HBTS but apparently it means hooked or beak-like, and I think it’s a really pretty word for Cavas’s nose.

There was clear influence from Indian mythology and the Hindu gods, but also from traditional mythical creatures and foods. Even the outfits are fantastic- I can’t explain how it felt to read about a character getting ready for an event and pinning her dupatta in place. My heart felt warm and seen 💕💕

There is also (if I’m interpreting this right) a variety of religions present in the fictional world, some of which are similar to Islam, Hinduism, or Atheism today.

I loved how despite these different beliefs, people are able to get along. It’s more so the border disputes between rivaling kingdoms that cause trouble.

Imagining Gul running through the palace in a sari and her brown jootis just fulfills all of my childhood Bollywood dreams ❤️😭

What I Liked:

I didn’t think I was going to like this book as much as I did. When it first started, I had a hard time getting into it, and it felt a little slow. But about a quarter in things started picking up - and quickly. I really liked how HBTS avoided some of the typical pitfalls of YA fantasy when it comes to overthrowing governments/the chosen one trope.

Also the story just starts to pull you in and you can’t tell the writer is in her groove. I liked all of the references to desi culture and the clothing, and the imagery was really pretty. Diversity in fantasy means so much to me - more than just being represented in books we get to have magic and adventures and romance too, and I adore that.

I feel like it would make a really good movie, and also the WOMEN are so great. Every single woman in this book is very well written and what I would give to have Amira call me princess 😍 anyways… 👀

I’m actually about to read the second book (this is a duology!) because I’m way too invested in the plot now.

HBTS switches perspectives between Cavas and Gul, and I honestly found Cavas’s perspective more refreshing - maybe because he was more mature than Gul or because I related to him more, but he just had more interesting thoughts 💭

I also didn’t really like Gul at the beginning, but I stuck around to see if she got character development and Ms. Bhathena did NOT disappoint. I can’t wait to see how she changes from here.

Side note: Hunted By The Sky handles classism in a really interesting way, and it makes me so happy that it was printed in India because there’s an inter-class relationship & that’s a really important convo that needs to be had

Why I couldn’t give it a ten:

I already mentioned this but I just had a hard time getting into it at first. There was a lot of lore specific/culture specific vocab that I wasn’t familiar with (but there is a glossary of terms at the back!)

This happens often when starting fantasy books, but the time it took to wrap my head around the world and who was who took longer than usual because new positions and groups kept being introduced.

Also, at the beginning Gul was kinda selfish and even though I really wanted to be on her side her actions were thoughtless. Her attitude when she was ten came off less as an actual ten year old and more as an older girl pretending to be a ten year old. She’s obviously not meant to be perfect however, and that’s okay. Her character development makes up for it.

Now this is a really big pitfall for YA fantasy romance and I can’t stand it:

Gul, the main character, has just turned 16. She never actually has sex but she gets into certain encounters that I felt uncomfortable reading about, knowing it was happening between two minors and written BY an adult.

Sadly, this is a common thing in YA fantasy (I’m looking at you, Sarah J. Maas). Oversexualizing minors in YA books needs to stop because it has a big impact on the kids reading - it wasn’t too bad in this book, so I still gave it 7/10. But please, do better.

Also tell me why enemies to lovers couples are always emotionally constipated 🙄 just tell each other how you feel already!! Communication, guys.

Despite its faults, I sincerely enjoyed this book enough to check out the second. I’ll comment an update when I’ve finished but I don’t know if I’ll give it a review. This was one of those books that I wish I had liked more because of the representation it brought to the table, and I think that it’s a genuinely good book, that fell into some difficult traps. Still worth the read 🍵

And as always, read the acknowledgments and author’s note!! They’re usually really sweet or include things about the book you didn’t know when you finished. Because it’s spoiler free and I really liked it, I’ve included Tanaz Bhathena’s note below:

I also really like that she describes the story as a brief journey through her twisted imagination - it deals with some rough and violent themes, and I feel like that fits. Excited to see what happens in the sequel! It’s called Rising Like A Storm ⛈

accidental pregnancy is like nothin compared 2 accidental bonding,,, when you got so many people just have super fertile sex all the time in so many different ways sometimes pregnancy just happens and like u just go abort it if you dont want to have it, its not a big deal really, people gonna give you a lecture like “you have been taught about birth control since u were ten WHAT are you out here doin”

sex ed is like a huge thing in hbt really so pregnancy isnt like, the MOST common thing in the world but it happens and barring irritated parents its not a particularly big deal cuz like. well for one you can just terminate the pregnancy and ur fine, but for two adoption is so huge and there’s so many willing parents out there that you can go that route too

i was gonna write a scene with kiri’s parents but then decided it didnt really add anything to the plot but im pretty sure one of his moms says something like “why couldn’t u have just gotten him pregnant instead’ so. 

like straight up it’d be less weird for them to come back and say they’d eloped and are married

accidental bonding is. like. kind of pretty taboo and not something that happens often. its mostly just drama for soap operas for teens and their grandmas to watch together and gasp behind their hands “i would NEVER”

muzzles are (meant to be) pretty fool proof, bakugou’s just.... too much pride and self confidence and lack of fear while at the same time being skilled enough at maintaining himself during heats that he even is ABLE to undo the latches

. its really rare for couples to do do rut/heat shares without like, explicitly talking about it first because it’s not like anybody is surprised by heats except for weird circumstances so it’s almost never ever that there aren’t muzzles or other barriers in the way (i mean its quirk society so who knows, if ur alpha has six mouths then there are blocking collars so) and also it’s not always that an alpha feels compelled to bite like that in rut anyway

all that to say that kiri’s parents are Not Happy At All especially his mama because she’s been sitting here the whole time just kind of waiting for them to break up. mom cycles between ‘oh its so ROMANTIC’ and ‘how did i raise my son so wrong’.

it’s rougher than w bakugou’s parents for sure. the bakugou’s are actually weirdly chill about the whole thing and that’s because they know their kid and they know that with anything he does he’s All In so they’ve long accepted kirishima as part of the family forever. mitsuki panics because she thinks kirishimas gonna be mad enough to do something stupid and leave bakugou (which. he can, technically, but it’s p much a form of psychological suffering for both of them after that.)

bakugou’s parents didn’t do their bondmark until katsuki was like, already ten, and a LOT of couples never even do it at all, so, it’s not taken lightly 

they also do NOT tell them that bakugou took the muzzle off himself and let them think that kirishima managed to tear it apart with his quirk. that’s an executive decision made before talking to them about it

kiri worried that his hero career was gonna be over because like. the publicity of trying to be a new aspiring hero while having a bondmark at 18 is not easy. there are a lot of agencys who would fire a hero or demote them to sidekick for that kind of thing. 

BUT izuku obviously isn’t gonna do that. gang orca doesn’t give a shit either as long as bakugou gets work done and also bakugou’s suit hides it, so

as for their friends uhhhhh first reactions are not always Great but everybody loves them and know they’re good together so they get over it and it’s just another fact;

kaminari literally refuses to believe it’s not a joke until he sees the mark and even then he’s like ‘wow haha really good makeup effects’ in a wobbly voice

uraraka says loud and fake “IM SO HAPPY FOR YOU” while covering her mouth because she’s horrified

mina’s always wild and is like “DAMN boys hahahhaha bet i can get one that’s bigger” and then bakugo tries 2 explode her

*insert Ami dragging in a huge chalkboard filled with scrimbles and writings fitting to a madman* Ahem...hello...welcome to the tumblr post in which i explain my vision of how hbt au would be as a musical

Lets start (adding a keep reading so you dont have to scroll if ya dont wanna see it) ALSO. spoilers for hbt au in general including the things discussed over here, Heathers the musical and....Disney's Frozen...

so first of all I think the overall vibe of the music would change constantly as Mark's life goes on, at some points becoming lighter to signify positive changes or gaining new hope. Or the opposite, getting somber when a negative event happens.

ALSO! I think each character would get a "theme". Not directly a song. Just a part of it, a melody that incorporates into the main song each time said character sings or has a protagonic role in the song. Of course, some character's (Mark, probably) Do get their own theme song, and sometimes the lyrics of that could incorporate into other songs.

Also. ALSO. when I mention a song to reference to I mean referenxe the vibe the song gives unless I specify it otherwise

Alr i didn't really think of lyrics or names (just the vibe) so here's a list of how i think the songs would go. For now uhm...I'll give them placeholder names

No room for the both of us - Do I. need to explain. INWCT chapter 1. It starts with a phone ringing a lot as you hear someone making their way towards it, the music slowly building up until said person picks up and Alt!Cesar starts singing. ("Black out days" by the Phantogram mixed with "For the record" From 36 questions and a bit of "Kiss me (kill me) By JerryTerry. Im saying nothing else)

Warmth - Alt!Cesar makes his choice to keep Mark alive for a while but struggles with humanity in return. Warning! Lots of blasphemy in this particular song. He also talks a bit about the alternates and the morningstar....Not really sure how the vibe would go

Deer - Bambi ripoff bitch shows up. Alt!Cesar struggles even MORE with humanity (think of "Kiss me (Kil me)" by JerryTerry, mostly from the alternate's parts in which it sounds sickly Sweet yet creepy whenever it sings (Alt! Cesar does too at the start but it becomes less and less eerie as the songs go on), the song changes its mood whenever anyone else sings, and at the end the deer is cut off from singing by Cesar, who starts hitting it with a stick at the rhythm of the music, that has already shifted its vibe once again)

Bandages - That one part in which Mark is bandaging Alt! Cesar's hands and talking about his faith and stuff (The idea for the vibe is mostly soft, calm acoustic with no percussion ... I couldnt think of a song that fits the vibe ToT)

The truth - they report to Thatcher, head to the church and find the bambi rippoff bitch again. This song shifts povs between Mark and Alt! Cesar-deer also sings (Along with its Kiss me, kill me song vibe) but not a lot as it is consntantly cut off by Cesar. Theres an epic instrumental near the end as Alt! Cesar finally makes the choice to protect Mark-a mix between his theme and Alt! Cesar's (kind of like that one instrumental in "I hear a symphony". The rest of the vibe is pretty much... Tense) The music calms down after its over (maybe it could end with some violin?)

Crucifix - Confrontation between Mark and Alt!Cesar. This one particularly sounds somber, yet there is a little hope between the lines. The music and tension build up until it is cut short by a gunshot. After that there is soft music and a couple last words are sang, softly, no music in the background, by alt!Cesar. He sounds very sad :( (This one is kind of meant to sound like "I am Damaged" from the heathers musical)

10:15 pm - 10:15, saturday night. Mark is confused- very. Sad also. Very traumatized, definitely. Theres a couple call back to other songs as well as lyrics from songs to come.. It ends with him choosing to stick to his faith and calling Thatcher (Picture "the 30th" by Billie Eilish .u." for an idea of the vibe)

Cold glare - Mark's life from before he turned ten and stuff...bad times. This song is not meant to be completely and all sad as his mom is still there (this one is, actually Sang by present Mark, narrating back on the events)

Angel numbers - Mark makes a new friend :)! What could possibly go wrong? (this song ends with Mark's dad screaming- also there's a couple dialogue cuts.. I dont really have an idea of the vibe)

Cesar - Mark makes another new friend but this time it goes nicely. Cesar's introduction to the story (this song kicks off with their first interaction btw. Maybe there could be a song between angel numbers and this one to smooth out the events. There's a few dialogue cuts, mostly to highlight important events between the friends. Also, this song's lyrics get used in the future, as well as the melody, or a slightly changed version of it is meant to be alt!Cesar's "theme") (also for the vibe of this one i imagine something like "if i could tell her" from dear evan hansen mixed with a bit of "a better versión" from 36 questions)

Mother - More events on Mark's childhood, up until the events from the day his parents died..its kind of a reprise to the first song of this section but not really? Only the melody, Maybe there could be some shared lyrics. (This one in terms of vibes and bpm could be something like "astronomy" By conan gray...just that. Progressively growing more and more tense)

Mark Heathcliff - Thatcher's experience with Mark, from their first meeting up until the time in which Mark calls him after the events of INWCT. Meant to be relaxed and a bit sad at times- also forgot to say the shared melody present at "Mother/Cold glare" is Mark's theme- which is also present here, along with some lyrics. (For the vibe of the music i imagine something like "the story" by Conan Gray)

Roll along - Mark narrates his life after the events of INWCT. He's not doing really well but hey! He got a dog! (There are some parts in this song with small dialogue exchanges between Mark and Thatcher, mostly discussing Mark's "saintly duties"). Kind of like rolling girl but imagine an entirely different vibe but the overall mood of the lyrics is the same, Hence, roll along. (But uh in terms of song vibe picture "Dear Theodosia" from hamilton... With a few somber parts)

Crucifix (Reprise) - Mark meets again with a little someone...It doesn't go well. Have you watched the frozen movie? Yeah? remember that part in which Ana and Elsa have a reprise of that one Ana song and it ends with Elsa accidentally throwing ice into Ana's hearth? Well imagine that kinda buildup in the song as they argue, but when Alt!Cesar has enough and he pushes Mark the melody just goes into a religious chorus kinda melody (Picture the part in "Meant to be yours" in which J.D. forcefully enters Veronica's room and sees her "dead". Like that but slower and more...ethereal sounding sort of) Until its cut short by...Mark getting impaled. OOF

warmth (reprise)? - Not really a song, but yeah, but REALLY short. The lyrics change but the melody stays the same, just that...slower. Alt!Cesar is singing in a very low voice too. (Picture "some die young" by Gavin Mikhail- but a lot less instrumental) This one ends with Alt!Ces calling for help, specifially, the sound of waiting for his call to be connected.

Uncle - SO MARK AND DAVE MEET FOR THE FIRST TIME. Just that Mark is in a medically induced coma so.. Yeah. Dave talks about his past and his life with his parents.. Thatcher sings a few lines! Also between strophes you can hear the transcript of how Cesar's call for help went. (for the vibe its kind of like "Our Word" from the 36 questions musical... But mix it with a bit of "Non-stop" since there's a lot going on. Also its a pretty long song) This one probably ends with Thatcher saying something like "oh. Well..."

Talk - So this one is just. Soft. Thatcher is worried, Mark just woke up. And they talk. About...pretty much everything. The enviroment is pretty peaceful, yet...a bit sad. Maybe Thatcher brings up the call. Mark sure as hell mentions Darcy and they both laugh a bit at this. Probably by the end lol. (So for the vibes, picture "its quiet uptown" from Hamilton)

I think than an interesting one in the future would be about Thatcher's alternate experience...Mostly narrating what happens as the hours pass, with a very eerie tone and a few dialogue breaks from Mark, who is violently texting Thatcher (his voice is also audible in the background as Thatcher sings) until in the end Thatcer just begins singing in a very low voice after....getting rid of the bugs. And then BOOM Mark comes in(Ohhh i think the vibe of this one would be kind of like "El tango de Roxxane" From Moulin Rouge ohhhhh YEESSSSSS)

But...after that one. Yeah. No idea. Ooof. Well...I hope you enjoyed reading that cuz i sure had fun writin' it. (also finding song references for the vibes of some songs lmao)

Oh! Gee - Comin’ Through

Hailing from Vancouver Canada the boys Oh! Gee are providing the sauce. We are more then happy to finally work with them as we have been big fans for a long while now.

OH GEE REVIEW

In a world full of rising chonk stars only the creamiest of tracks will get their respective dues and time to shine. Comin’ Through is certainly one of those tracks, presenting itself originally with deceptively smooth future bass pads and stabs likened to something much more middle of the road. Do not be fooled by this display of arduous and meticulous sound design…the drop is imminent. We can begin to hear Oh! Gee’s trap style percussion filtering into the mix as we approach the meat of the song. Revealing their true form at the 45 second mark with a much needed pitch shifted vocal sample we drop into demented weebs and wobs for much of the remaining run time. In difficult times it is certainly refreshing to hear some Canada bois who still know how to do it right. OH GEE! Provides the perfect blend of sugar and spice to get us through the coming descent into madness and I know once the quarantine times dissipate I will certainly be hitting up their email for some stateside summer booking. 

We got the pleasure to ask them a few question about music and life and the universe : C= Christian , R= Renaud

1:  I feel like some people are not aware that you guys are a duo and not just one guy. So we were wondering if you could tell us how you guys first met and how Oh! Gee came into fruition?

(C+R). It actually was a solo thing on and off before we met - back when I lived in Calgary and I started in the industry I had a few different artist aliases when I was trying to find my sound. I mostly DJ'd back then, and I was making some bassline house and g house under the name Christian Cash too. In April 2018 we met on our first day of school at Nimbus School of Recording and Media in Vancouver and we got along immediately. Our values are very similar, and our tastes in music even more so. Right away we hit it off and began to run Pirated Records together. The first appearance of oh! gee as a duo was in September 2018, when we hosted the first ever Pirated Records showcase at a small gathering in Northern BC. We hid our identities and performed together for the first time, playing a style that was brand new to both of us - but had us completely hooked. This was the spawning of what oh! gee is today. A culmination of experimental, innovative sounds, that will make you say what the fuck

 2:  Which of your guys tunes is your favorite that you have ever produced? (and if there is a specific reason elaborate!) 

(R) One of my favorite song we ever produced was a Wubby Head Cat it’s one of our unreleased track .We’ve had a lot fun working on that song in the studio right after our trip this summer.

(C) I don’t think I could pick one specific favorite. Especially lately we have a ton of crazy stuff going on when we’re producing. We’ve been learning so much and applying it every time we start something new. Anything I choose at the moment would be unreleased. If I had to pick a track thats released right now - I think my favorite would be our most recent, the In My Head geemix. This track carries such a wicked vibe from start to finish and I love the depth of the basses. This is probably the track I’m most excited to play on a big system right now too.

 3: Who/what are your biggest influences? 

(R)  My biggest inspiration is the world that surrounds us everyday but I also like inspiring my self from song  and artist that really enjoy like bd hbt , THRPY , Kurei and many more ’s. 

(C) A lot of my biggest influences are my mentors and close friends. Renaud - the other half of oh! gee - my best friend. We are probably each others biggest influence. Especially running two brands together and spending practically every day together working on music. Kurei - he’s been an amazing homie the whole time I’ve known him and he’s one of my favorite producers as well. Michael Cullen for always having our back and guiding us in the right direction, and being such an inspiring mentor. My friend and label manager Vince, who owns Emengy. There’s just so many to name. I also have a lot of influences from my school.. and my girlfriend is a huge influence too. She’s extremely passionate about the things she does, and the content she creates. That inspires me as much as anything else, if not more. 

 4: If you were stuck on a desert island with only one VST what would you choose?

(C) I would pick Serum, definitely. You could make a whole track just using this vst, especially with the built in fx. It’s like an in the box multi-tool. That sounds like the most handy thing you could have when stranded 

(R) I would definitely take serum !!!!!! You can Never can go wrong with sound design !! I could never get tired of it .

 5:  If Meat and Yogurt got into a fist fight who would win and why?

(C) I think the Meat would win, because Yogurt only has one form really, its Yogurt, and if it changes form it’s not yogurt any more. Meat can be in so many different shapes and sizes and forms - and its still meat. So even if yogurt beats that meat it’s gonna come back when it’s grounded and get revenge. 

(R) yogurt would definitely win because meat just going punch thought it then the yogurt just going to go back to his original state. Like throwing a punch in water or in lake in always go back.

 6: Who is another local or one of your homies that we might not know about that we should check out ? 

(C +R) If you don’t know about Zenon Beatz, BLZBO or Sheevs they’re three very talented locals from Vancouver, & super good friends of ours. All of us are on Emengy and we have quite a bit of collaborative music between us that will be coming out this year. Also Check it Smol and just john if you don’t know them they are killing the scene !!!
