freediving essentials
From Non-Swimmer to Freediving Coach of Asia Last year, I promised myself to fill my life with much more growth, new learnings, experiences, and skills. One of my goals aside from hiking high mountains is to learn how to swim confidently because I'm afraid whenever my feet couldn't touch the seabed anymore. As a woman who is always willing to learn something new, I challenged myself to try freediving last May 2019 where I took Course 1 (Introduction/ Basics of Freediving) and Course 2 (Safety, Rescue and Self-help) with the help of Coach Kristin Atienza. I never thought I would enjoy freediving for the first time! The ocean became my happy and quiet place where all the stress, anxieties, worries, fears, and noise are left at the surface, where I can be as free as the fishes, as peaceful as the sea turtles, and as vibrant as the corals. I felt, at that moment, that I was a real-life mermaid! I also consider freediving as a great therapy where we need to meditate - relax our mind and body. Furthermore, learning how to save ourselves and other people during emergency situations is beneficial for everyone of us. Aside from that, I like and support the advocacy of Freediving Coaches of Asia (FCOA) - to teach open water survival and safety diving spread the love and care for the ocean by less to zero waste and coastal clean-ups, and inspire and empower other people to do the same. So after my first freediving experience, I decided to pursue the next courses and daydreamed of being a Freediving Coach soon. I had my birthday dive last July. Gradually, I felt more confident than before. Fear is fading. There was an improvement. After a month, I took Course 3 (Navigation) and Course 4 (Ropework and Weight Use) with the help of Coach Hazel Gallos and Coach Joseph Rabino, and Assistant Coaches - Coach Miles Scherzinger and Coach Aldrich Ballares. Thank you, coaches! I thought I won't be able to take the last course just like what I planned due to financial constraints but by God's grace, I was able to take Course 5 (Coach Training) last December. Thank you again to Coach Tin! In turn, I’ve found out that continuously learning, surrounding myself with inspiring people, and challenging myself, gradually changed my life for the better. Thank you so much to all the coaches who patiently taught and believed in me! I wouldn't have done this without your help. I didn't meet my expectations, I exceeded it! Who would have thought that a non-swimmer can be a Freediving Coach? This year, I started teaching freediving lessons and I could proudly say that this is one of the most fulfilling jobs in the world - to see my student's willingness to learn freediving, love and care for the ocean, conquer their fears, and push themselves to be a better and responsible freediver. All of them made me so proud! Thank God for the guidance, strength, and for the opportunity to see the beauty of His creations under the sea.

Soulmate AU - Shouto - colors
AU - you only see the shades of your soulmates eyes until you look into their eyes.
I gave you light hazel eyes because it was easier to write than saying (e/c)
Greys and blues.
The young girl didn’t understand why she only saw different shades of said colors for a couple years, until her mom finally decided it was time to explain the term soulmate. Specifically, how people found them. Still, at the age of thirteen, she didn’t understand fully. She was still focused on why she saw two totally different colors. All people only had one eye color, so why did she see two?
“It’s called heterochromia,” her sister told her at the age of fourteen. The older sister had already found her soulmate at this point, and walked out with him without explaining any further.
At the age of fifteen, she was welcomed into the hero course at U.A by recommendations a couple weeks into the year. Her quirk was telekinesis and she had mastered her quirk at a young age due to harsh training from her mother, who was determined to have her daughter turn out much better than she ever was. She knew how to manipulate any thing, no matter the size, and move any human with the flick of her wrist.
She was young, yes, only a teenager, but she was becoming impatient in finding her soulmate. Who wouldn’t? What did they look like? What kind of personality did they have? She cringed at the thought of her soulmate having a personality similar to the angry boy she ran into at the park earlier that week, someone needed to give that boy a chill pill.
(y/n) sighed, tossing another piece of bread into the pond in front of her, watching the dull fish swim up to eat it, their scales glistening with water in the sunlight. The different shades of blue surrounded them, and she admired how bright the colors were, making her even more excited to look into her soulmates eyes.
Looking up, she squinted her eyes, different shades of greys and the occasional dull brown sticking out at her. At least this would make her soulmate easier to find; them having two drastically different colored eyes.
“H-hey, you okay?” Izuku nudged his shoulder against Shouto’s lightly, catching himself on the bi-colored haired boy. Izuku glanced at Ochako, his soulmate, and she glanced back at him, her large, worried eyes landing on Shouto.
Shouto looked up from his desk and at Izuku, holding in a sigh. He looked straight ahead at the board, watching Aizawa slowly unzip himself from his sleeping bag, obviously not looking forward to a another day of teaching. Squinting his eyes slightly, he noticed how some of Ochako’s hair showed in patches, but so did Denki’s, and also lighter parts of Izuku’s. Brown, some yellow, and light green, he closed his eyes and imagined a mix of the three in someone’s eyes.
“I’m okay.” Shouto said, deciding it would be pointless to even talk about this stuff with him. He knew he’d find them, and he shouldn’t be complaining about not meeting them yet considering he was young and some people didn’t even have a soulmate. His father was the real thing nagging at his mind, complaining everyday that Shouto shouldn’t be destined to be with someone that could possibly be weak. Then again, it made Shouto happy, because his dad could never force someone out of his life if they were destined to be together.
Izuku decided not to push the subject and leaned back in his seat as Aizawa started to stand up, stretching his arms above his head before his eyes scanned the class lazily. “We’ll be having a new student, tomorrow. So you better behave yourselves and be nice.” His eyes landed on Katsuki, and the blond scoffed, slamming his hands on the desk. “Tch, why are you looking at me?”
At his explosive behavior, Aizawa sighed and turned towards the chalkboard to start writing notes about their lesson for the day. Something about his announcement made Shouto’s heart speed up at the chance the new student could be his soulmate, but he quickly shook his head and shoved away the thought. He new better, it was a one in one hundred chance his soulmate would walk through that door tomorrow.
The stressed girl ran through the doors of U.A, her feet carrying her down the hall and towards class 1-A. She mentally scolded herself for already being late on her first day there, and would have to face the awkward mid-class-walk-in-introduction. The grey door caught her eye and she stopped outside of it for a moment to catch her breath, eyes on the blue nail polish on her nails.
She’d done that for a while now- painted her nails blue or a different shade of grey than she normally saw. It comforted her somehow.
Her shaky hand met the door and she slowly pulled it open, cringing when she heard the murmurs among the class come to an abrupt stop. Her eyes met the teacher’s first, and she saw the faint shades of blue on a couple of the students out of the corner of her eye. One male, with multiple arms, had a blue bandana around his face, she noticed as she searched for anything else blue in the room.
“Class, this is our new student.” Aizawa said, stepping aside and she took that as a cue to start introducing herself. Shouto glanced up from his desk and sat up straight in his seat, eyebrows raising at the sight of the girl. His fingers grasped his desk and his heart skipped a beat at her beauty, his eyes seemed to tunnel vision on her. It felt like what he had heard about love at fist sight, and he knew he needed to look into her eyes soon.
“Hi, I’m (l/n)(f/n), but you can call me (f/n),” she smiled brightly, her eyes closing and the corners crinkling slightly. Shouto breathed out shakily and Ochako sent Izuku a knowing glance before tilting her head towards the love struck boy.
“My quirk is telekinesis, and I can say I’ve nearly mastered using it.” She added, having yet to look at Shouto, but she still saw the piercing blue color coming from the corner of the room in her peripheral vision.
“Show us something!” Ochako squeaked excitedly, already wanting to befriend the girl. The brunette clasped her hands together and hopped in her seat a little, also noticing how bright the girl’s eyes were with the different shades of greens and yellows and browns. Her soulmate, ahem, Shouto, was a lucky guy.
The bright eyed girl smiled, looking around the room for something to lift or move. Her eyes scanned dangerously over Shouto and he leaned farther forwards in his chair, resting his elbows on the desk.
“Who volunteers?” She asked, making half the class furrow their brows in confusion.
“Me!” Denki jumped up stupidly, his arm outstretched in the air. He didn’t know what he was volunteering for, but he knew this girl was pretty and that’s all it took for him to jump in, being the flirt he is.
Smirking, the new girl lifted her arm in front of her and flicked her pointer finger, narrowing her eyes at the electric boy. He frowned in confusion before he yelped in surprise when the ground disappeared from beneath him and he slowly flew towards the ceiling. Ochako smiled at the similarity of their quirks, envying how (y/n) could control her objects instead of just having them float there.
“Whoa!” Izuku grabbed his journal quickly, mumbling questions to himself as he started to sketch her, adding notes to the side about her quirk. She slowly lowered Denki back into his seat, moving his desk in line with him with her other hand.
Katsuki growled, lowering himself into his seat. He despised when people had strong control over their very useful quirks, that just meant he had one more person to compete against.
“Jealous, Katsuki?” Eijirou flicked Katsuki’s shoulder, earning a death glare from the angry boy.
“Shut it, hair for brains!” Katsuki’s yell drug her attention towards the other side of the class, and he ducked back in his seat as her eyes landed on him, hazel eyes wandering away from him and meeting heterchromia ones for a split second. She looked away before she could really see the person’s eyes, but furrowed her brows when she saw patches of color swim in the corners of her eyes.
The bell rang for lunch and she patiently waited for the class to file out before she left, recognizing the brunette girl pass by her. “Hey! Your quirk is really cool, and it’s really similar to mine.”
“Really, what is it?” She tilted her head, chest fluttering with warmness at the happy girl, relieved someone was already talking to her.
“Zero gravity, I have to touch whatever I want to float, though.” Ochako explained, showing the pads on her finger tips.
“That’s really cool,” (y/n) smiled.
“I’m Ochako, by the way.” the brunette introduced, then nudged her finger behind her. “That nerd behind me is my boyfriend, Izuku. Wanna eat lunch with us?” The hazel eyed girl then noticed the mass of hair peaking up behind Ochako’s shoulder, and a freckled face boy slowly lifted his head, continuing to write away in his journal. He smiled shakily at her and she gladly returned it, nodding her head. “Sure.”
As they all turned towards the door, a cold hand wrapped around (y/n)’s wrist and she was pulled back into the room, her surprised squeak drawing the attention of Ochako and Izuku.
“Shouto, what are you-?” Ochako trailed off when she noticed the desperate look in Shouto’s eyes, and she smirked.
“We’ll catch up with you guys,” Shouto said. The girl in his grasp had a shiver run down her spine when his cold breath hit her neck.
“What are you d-” her words were cut short when she turned to face Shouto, her world flooding with color as their eyes locked. His breath hitched when he finally saw color, his mind drawing a blank at her pink cheeks and hair that looked oh so soft and he had to stop himself from reaching out to touch it. But her eyes, her eyes, they were the brightest things he’d ever seen and he fell into the mix of greens and browns swirling in her irises.
He almost felt bad for her, being paired with him, a face he found unsightly. Her eyes were on his scar and he almost wanted to coward into a corner of leave the room completely.
He slowly let go of her hand and it instantly felt even colder without his touch, and the longer she stayed silent, the more negativity that filled Shouto’s thoughts.
Without thinking, she reached up and ran her fingers under his bangs, grazing over the uneven skin of his scar. Her chest ached, what or or did this to him?
He didn’t even flinch at her touch, instead, he leaned into her hand and sighed in content as she ran her thumb under his eye where the scar stopped. It felt like his life was slowly leading up to this moment, and now that it was happening he was the happiest boy on earth. But then he thought about his family, and his past, and his mom and his insecurities started flooding his mind.
“You’re perfect,” they both whispered in unison, throwing each other off track. Shouto thought the best thing to do was kiss her, and so he did.
Her soft lips met his cold ones and she wrapped her arms around his neck as his snaked around her waist, pressing her body flush to his. The kiss was short, but seemed to last a lifetime in their little world, and when they pulled back they heard the click of a camera behind them.
“Guess you’ll be eating lunch with Shouto?” Ochako giggled as she saved the picture on her phone, tucking the device into her bag.
“Yeah,” she dropped her arms from Shouto’s neck and took one of his hands in hers. “I will.” Shouto’s mind was still fuzzy as him and his soulmate talked at the lunch table, the girl’s of the class giggling and swaying in awe a table away. His right hand was intertwined with hers as he explained his quirk and complicated home life that came along with it, heart skipping a beat every time she’d smile or give him sweet words of encouragement.
“Once we’re out of school your dad can’t control you anymore,” she said, tilting her head with a smile. She squeezed his hand, running her thumb over the back of it. “It can be just me and you, yeah?” Shouto nearly fainted from a sweetness overload, squeezing the drink in his hand slightly harder. He’d found his soulmate, and she was the sweetest being he’d ever laid eyes on. “Yeah. Sounds perfect.”
