How I imagine this conversation went down:
Lucifer: Hheeeyyy! So, Hell’s going to be getting some new residents. A few… hundred of them
Ozzie: Don’t you get hundreds of sinners every day? What’s so special about these ones?
Lucifer: Well yeah but these ones aren’t exactly sinners
Bee: Lucifer what did you do?
Lucifer: I kinda… stole Heaven’s army?
Mammon: Well damn! How’d you do that?
Lucifer: My daughter gave them genuine affection and I yelled at one of the seraphim
Bee: …wow. You know what? I dig it

So I was thinking about how Lute ended up going to Hell so routinely in the Hawk Feather AU, even before her breakdown and subsequent fall (it started as a kinda what if that became canon to the AU so there’s a bit of it not meshing quite right, at least to me) and I had a thought.
What if Lute was the only exorcist actually cast down? Like after the exterminations are cancelled she’s going stir crazy from her purpose being taken away, grief, and fear, and the council and Sera see this. They see this already abnormally aggressive angel who was quite literally designed to kill getting even snappier and sharper and more dangerous with every passing day, so they hold a trial.
Lute later likens it to being a dangerous dog, listening to the court argue over what to do with her, if she’s safe to let around the citizens of Heaven. Some even suggest she might be a danger to the less animal members of her own flock. Lute wasn’t allowed to defend herself, to argue that she wasn’t a danger to other angels, she just had to listen as they determined her fate like she was nothing more than an unruly animal.
They decide, at the end, to take her halo and make her fall. They hope that maybe removing her from the equation, the most animalistic and aggressive of the exorcists, might make managing the rest of the flock easier.
They’re wrong. When her flock learns of what the court did to their leader they leave of their own free will, no hesitation. By the time they find a way to Hell Lute has already begun adjusting, and so they follow suit.
Ooooo yes, Lute isn't allowed to talk, literally. She tries, and they put some kinda temporary magical seal on her mouth to shut her up, much to Emily and other angles opposition
Lute just has to sit there unable to say anything as they argued, like they were putting a wild animal down
Her flock doesn't know what happened for, roughly 2 months, nobody bothered to tell them their flock leader went away
Soem were worried she'd died, because she'd never abandon them. Not by choice. Not of her own free will. Their furious when they find out what happened

I can just imagine Lucifer confronting sera about the exorcists.
“They’re PEOPLE. People sera! And you never even gave them a childhood or a chance to learn about themselves! You just poofed a few intelligent beings into existence, didn’t like how they turned out, gave them weapons and made them killers. And you have the gall to be disgusted by their nature?! A nature you gave them! That’s it, mine. I’m adopting them. Time to tell Charlie she’s got a few hundred more siblings.”
Then dramatically turns so his coat flairs and walks out.
Sera wants to defend herself, but Lucifer’s words are all fact. She’s done inexcusable things. She fucked up when she first decided genocide was the best course of action. She only fucked up worse when she made soldiers like they were dolls, not people whose first impression of the world was hostility, violence, and a disapproving gaze. Theres no defending herself or her actions.
Emilys at the meeting too, being a seraphim, and by the end she’s just curled in on herself and silently crying. She doesn’t even want to look at Sera. How could something like this be happening in Heaven? How could her own sister do this?
Aren’t angels supposed to be the good guys?
In Hell Lucifer is fuming and beginning to work out the logistics of taking a few hundred angels under his protection. According to Heaven animalistic souls belong with him anyway, so really he’s just bringing them to where they’re supposed to be.

After Lute’s breakdown Charlie’s already fractured view of Heaven just about shatters. She doesn’t know what to believe anymore.
Many of the hotel residents question if trying for redemption is even worth it if this is what Heaven is like under the glamour.

Freshly fallen Vaggie: *eating rats and acting feral* Charlie: "Wow sinners are so quirky, she's cute! :D"
Vaggie sees Charlie in the doorway and is immediately spitting the half eaten rat out and apologizing and Charlie just asks why she’s doing so. Shes clearly hungry and Hell has so many pest issues anyways. Charlie’s seen enough sinners eat rats she doesn’t blink an eye anymore and Vaggie is staring at her like she’s just spilled the secrets of the universe.

What if like how Adam and Lilith were created from dirt and Eve from Adam’s rib, the Exorcists were created from hawk feathers, causing them to essentially have a prey drive that Heaven targeted at sinners? Like hawks trained to hunt pigeons, a bird that’s considered a nuisance.

Hawk Feather AU (but can also just be a general Emilute headcanon). Emily and Lute will go on dates to Earth, in human disguises of course, and more than once Emily has gotten into an argument with a street preacher and out preached them.
Lute is just standing nearby watching proudly as Emily summons another version of the Bible from her bag to prove her point while she balances three others on her other arm. She’s gathered a small audience and the preacher is running out of steam under the sheer might of a seraph determined to debunk their hate.

Emily doesn’t like the dark, she never has. As a little kid she used to go to Sera’s room in the middle of the night and climb into her bed so she wasn’t alone. As she got older Sera taught her light creation spells so she would always have a way to ward off the shadows.
Hell is a lot darker than Heaven, especially at night, so after her fall Emily often uses a bit of her magic to conjure little glowing dots akin to silvery fireflies to float around her room. She makes dozens of them every night, it helps her sleep even if the magic comes with a tinge of grief.
When Emily and Lute eventually get together and Lute sees them for the first time she nearly cries. They remind her of stars, and one thing she’s missed painfully about Heaven was the sky, especially at night. There’s no light pollution there, so she could see every little star. She misses the stars almost as much as she misses the sun.

Perhaps fallen Emily's new form would resemble that of the former exorcists? Claws, wings, feathers, the works?
I like the idea of her becoming more birdy, though maybe leaning less towards bird of prey like the exorcists and more towards dove. So no talons but she does get some extra feathers around her neck and shoulders, and down her back, all soft whites and grays and maybe a bit of lavender.

Haha! Yeah that’s pretty much it lol. Redemption via breakdowns is the name of the game
wow that's a nice inflexible honour code you've got there. i can't wait to see it broken under immense pressure, and you along with it.

Listen, emilute emily/lute, in you hawk feathers au-
Jsut, just hear me out okay- Lute responding to all of Emily's calls and validating the birds part of her brain and Emily giving Lute words of affirmation and tells her she's much more then a killing bird, if not to anyone else then to her
You don't gotta, obviously, your au but I think it'd be very cute, also their heavens version of chaggie(well, kinda) so-
You know what? I like it, especially with the fact that we’ve now decided Emily will fall.
It’d take awhile, but eventually as they spend more and more time together I can see them falling for each other. It’d be an interesting pairing considering their birds, a dove and a hawk, and their histories, a joy bringer and a hunting bird, but they’d be good for each other. They each have traits and skills the other lacks.

I like the idea that Vaggie has talons but cuts them short when she’s in Hell to better hide her Exorcist origins. Once it’s revealed she lets them grow out and Charlie likes painting them

For the hawk feather au, I read that birds have hollow bones so there very fragile.
While I don't the the exorcists would be fragile I do imagine they break bones in the stupidest ways, like they can take so many hits or fall from massive hights and nothing will happen but they will fall slightly from a tree and break there leg or will fracture something by walking into a door.
It also makes them extremely light that's why vaggie goes absolutely flying when people push her like she does in the show.
Instances Exorcists have not broken bones:
Getting hit full speed by another Exorcist
Falling six stories
Getting hit by debris on Extermination Day
Flying into a window
Hard sparring sessions
Instances Exorcists have broken bones:
Tripping and hitting the edge of a table
Missing the very bottom stair
Falling out of a low hanging hammock
Walking into a glass wall
Running into each other at normal speed
At the hotel Vaggie once slipped on a piece of paper and snapped her collarbone, literally five minutes after she fell off a third story balcony and was completely fine.
Exorcists are like non-Newtonian fluids, the harder you hit them the less likely they are to take damage.

i love doves so much :)
i wonder what dove emily is though
because theres like mourning doves, luzon bleeding heart doves, the classic white dove (cant find its species name bc of the dove brand), diamond doves, etc..
also!! Fun fact: doves and pigeons are both in the columbidae bird family :D
I don’t think a specific species was ever determined. It’s just kinda been generic dove, but this got me thinking.
Maybe in Heaven she was more akin to a mourning dove or a release dove (white doves are specifically bred that way from a couple domestic breeds), but once she falls her appearance changes.
Her taking on more attributes of a bleeding heart dove could actually be wonderful symbolism. She fell because of her rage at the unfair system and her compassion, her “bleeding heart.”
Maybe as she gains more feathers the ones on her chest begin turning bloody red. Or, since she is still biologically an angel and still bleeds gold, they turn gold. A stark, almost violent gold that looks like she was speared right through the heart.
Ooo, that’s a cool fact! Thank you for sharing!
